Captain Pixel Vs The Round Invaders by Junber 2017-08-18T05:18:47Z
I can't say that I was any good at this game, but what I did mange to play was pretty solid, and had some of the most humorous content I've come across in LD39. Great work!

I can't say that I was any good at this game, but what I did mange to play was pretty solid, and had some of the most humorous content I've come across in LD39. Great work!
For a game made in 12 hours, it is remarkably enjoyable! I think the fact the the game is lacking in polish (except when creating your atmosphere) and graphics or even a vast amount of gameplay but is still so fun to play shows you've got a good understanding of how to make a game enjoyable! Good show! I'd love to see what kind of game you can make in 48 or even 72 hours!
How very bizarre! It's a solid concept tough, and strangely humours, just needed a fair bit of refining. You said in your description about wanting a capable game designer, but remember there are loads of great resources out there for learning game design. Two of my favourites are Extra Credits (youtube.com/channel/UCCODtTcd5M1JavPCOr_Uydg) and Game Makers Toolkit (youtube.com/channel/UCqJ-Xo29CKyLTjn6z2XwYAw). I doubt they have episodes about the game design of bunny reproduction, but they are definately a great place to learn stuff! Good luck, and well done on completing another Jam (that's an achievement in itself remember )
Genuinely an awesome game! The tutorial, the power ups, the level design, the shooting animation, EVERYTHING about this game is brilliantly made , a true testament to game jams! Well done indeed! You should be very proud of your game! I very much enjoyed it!
Could do with some polish and some sound, as well as a few extra mechanics perhaps to stop things becoming too monotonous, but I actually quite enjoyed it. It's a fun little twist on the theme, and while the game could have done more to incorporate the theme, I though it was cool. And yes, the graphics are cool! You know, a post LD version of this could make for a really fun mobile game, I'd love to play it. Either way, good show!
Looks like a really great game, but unfortunately I get an error whenever I take a photo :disappointed:, copied below. It might be because I'm playing it on Windows but running on a Mac, but what I can see of the game looks genuinely great! Well done!

It's a nice take on the theme, but it's a seems a bit of a shame that you can just try all of the buttons one after another until they all turn on, rather than there being some kind of puzzle that you have to solve. I must admit though, it's still a lot of fun to toy around with lots of buttons and switches and things. Well done!
What you've got looks really good. The walking stick is a bit wobbly because the bottom of the walking stick never properly plants itself onto one spot on the ground, but otherwise what you have is pretty cool. I especially love the graphics, it's good pixel art you've got there! Don't worry about not having made game, any time spent working on your skills is time well spent . Are you considering making a game in a future jam? I'd be curious to see what you make!
A solid game, and a really unique take on the theme! The graphic style is also quite pleasant, I've never seen a game successfully pull off a shade of pink like that! I felt at times though it was a bit though to be precise with the controls, though I think that might have had more to do with the set up of some of the obstacles rather than the controls themselves (or just as easily, my lack of skill). None the less, a great game. Good show!
I like the art style of the game, it's certainly a more unique style. The controls felt a unnatural but the premise of the game is fun, and it's nice to have a verity of enemies. Good work!
I agree the controls is a bit difficult to get used to, but I do like graphics. Clearly a fair bit of time went into the models! Well done!
Quite a fun concept, and a good visual style! I felt like the difficultly curve going into the last level was a bit steep, I hadn't actually properly learnt how the enemies behave before reaching that level as all of the previous ones had been so easy, but it certainly never felt impossible or unfair. Bonus points for using Love2D, I've always been fond of lua! Well done on your second Jam!
Very tough but well designed! I really liked the mood created by the game, it's strangely tranquil and calm, which not only makes you wonder about any possible narrative of the game, but also stops you getting frustrated too easily. It also would have been nice to see some animations, especially on the players cape, but overall a really nice game! Good show!
Genuinely a really good concept for a game. One of the few game's I've seen that have tried to create a good mood as well! The gameplay is also really interesting, I could certainly spend age optimising what arrangement I've got after every turn, but the game does a good job at keeping you power balanced (literally). Good show! I've book marked the post-jam version to play later, I think I'm gonna like it!
Like many I struggled to warp my head around the mechanics, even after reading the description, but it's definitely a fun take on quick time puzzle solving. Good job!
In need of a bit of polish here and there, but a nice little game. I'm surprised however that you haven't closed the 'humour' category, that ending was devastating ! Well done on your first project alone, I mean, working as a team is always great, but It's though work going at it alone. Well done!
I enjoyed doing the little puzzle panels, it's like doing half a dozen sudoku panels at once and a lot of fun. However I did feel the recharge system was a bit frustrating as opposed to challenging, I thought it did more to distract from the fun bits (the puzzle panels) then it added to the game.
It was definitely a well put together game though, both on the visual/audio side and from the technical side. Definitely a solid game. Keep up the good work!
The controls felt slightly wobbly at the start, particularly the wall jump, but the game was a very enjoyable experience. It vaguely reminds me of the days of Nitrome.com. The graphics were fun as was the gameplay, accompanied by some solid music and SFX. I think bits of the gameplay are open to a tad of polish, but it's an impressive entry to Ludum Dare, let alone your first! Good show!
Definitely a great interpretation of the theme and a fun game concept . I found the controls a bit clunky and the power ups a bit difficult to figure out the shape of, but that didn't detract too much from the overall experience. Bonus points for using Love2D, I've got a special place in my heart for Lua! I bet if you were to polish it up a bit an add some more levels the game would be great for mobile! I know I'd play it! Good show!
A very enjoyable little game! The play area was I little small I thought, but otherwise the visual appeal of the game was great, and running around fixing generators I don't think has ever been so much fun! A funny interpretation of the theme. Well done!
A very neat and polished little game! Everything is a little bit small but otherwise I like the graphical style. Some music would have been nice to keep you company while you monopolise the map, but definitely a good bit of fun! Good show! Are you going to try and push yourself in the next jam, this game seems shockingly complete. I'd love to see what else you can make!
Hey! Well done for finishing three games! I know that might not seem like a lot but the game I made this LD Jam was the only one I've ever finished! Obviously I don't know what else you wanted to do with the game, but there is a fair amount there considering (though I would say for next time find a different core mechanic than rapidly pressing space, my arm is tired now! ). The premise you've got going here is brilliant and hilarious, I'm sure it would be great fun in it's completed form.
I don't know if you already do something like this, but as a tip for your next Jam, write down all the features you want to put in your game in a list, and then rank them from 'this is really important for the game to work' to 'I really want this in the game but the game won't technically be incomplete without it', and then start from the top. E.G. Is there something else you could have put in the game if you hadn't of spent time on multiple locations? By sacrificing some features in favour of others, sometimes you can focus on making your game better, rather than 'more', if that makes sense.
But again, really well done! If nothing else remember, practice makes perfect. (And also remember to make this game again someday when you're a super cool game developer, it'd be great fun!)
Rather quite a well crafted game! Good show! Really good use of game design, and a good bit of fun! You made a good use of individual levels, and while it took me a moment to realise everything I could click on, the game is so easy to pick up I barely even noticed it! Well done! I'd watch out about leaving the mood and humour categories open though, I didn't think that either of those really fit your game.
Definitely the beginning of a really fun game! It's a shame it's so rough around the edges, I had to read the comments just to figure out how to get past the second door, but the graphics and animations were great and the puzzles are good fun. Well done on a solid first entry to Ludum Dare! (Just remember to brush up on your time management before the next one!)
It's a fun game with a nice visual style, and a game that was nice and easy to pick up and understand. It took me a few tries to realise that the very top lane was there, but after that I certainly became a lot better at the game! Bonus points for using Love2D, lua has got a special little place in my heart it has! Maybe not an innovative game, but again, definitely fun to play, and while that might some times seem easy it can be easier then some people realise to botch up these sorts of games. Good show!
From what there is to play the game looks really interesting, but surely a RPG is one of the toughest types of game to make in 72 hours? Regardless, it was nice to see that the combat system wasn't purely menus, but a bit more verity would have been nice as well. The graphics, audio and mood really came trough though, and I really liked it. It's a shame we don't get to see more, but what's there certainly is promising!
@mr-marcgenesis Thanks very much for the feedback! It really has been fun, definitely going to do it again in December! Looks like I'm gonna have to learn how to make some music! (I mean, I could use some good old Kevin Macleod I suppose, but where's the fun in that hey?)
@zenmumbler Thanks! No, it really was a Jam entry! I probably could have made it to compo but it would have been remarkably bare bones. I'm about to go on a game playing spree now, but thanks for dropping by and playing mine, I really should have started doing this a long time ago!
@easy82 Thanks a bunch! Out of interest how easy was it to figure out the mechanics? I used my non-game familiar family to beta test, and they had a bit of a hard time to say the least!
I've got no clue how to make music, but I'd love to give it a try (I know I don't *have* to make it myself, but why not, hey?) I'd like to make a post jam version as well, but somehow I find it a lot harder to motivate myself when I haven't got a meaningful countdown timer next to me :unamused:. I've just today started playing other people's games as well, let's see how many I can get though in just a few days! (I'm not too worried about votes on my game though, feedback is never a bad thing but honestly I'm actually just pretty chuffed I even made a game!)
Thanks again for the feedback!
@shaolin-dave Duly noted! Thanks for the feedback, I agree the controls are tiresome after a while, and that sure seems a better way of going about it!
@baby-dino-herd Aww, thank you very much! The jumping flower is my favourite as well! (I like to call him Jeff ). Though, I can't help but feel that my subconscious had drifted over to Undertale when I came up with him. Hey ho!
The feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks for dropping by!
@pcmaster Thanks a bunch! I'm already looking forward to the next Jam! (Though maybe I shouldn't considering it's 3-4 months away.) Thanks for coming on by and leaving a rating! It be very interesting to see what people have scored it.
@easy82 That's good to hear! Thanks for coming back to reply.
@ectucker1 Thanks for the rating! The movement wasn't gridlocked originally, but I couldn't actually figure out how to create good movement so I had to ditch it, definitely something to learn ready for next time! Sorry to make it annoying, the randomly generated dungeons are designed so that there is almost never enough power to kill every single bad guy, so instead you have to move around them, but obviously that's not easy to figure out without already knowing!
Thanks again though for leaving feedback! It really is appreciated!
@lereveur Thank you very much! I've always been curious about game Jams and LD has been an absolute blast. Glad to hear I made something worthwhile!
@ludumanthony And that you are! Thanks a ton!
I'm glad figuring out how to kill the enemies worked out, obviously it's a core part of the game but I didn't know if I'd made it clear enough that that's what people had to do. Thanks for dropping by and giving some feedback!
@carsen-d Thanks so much! I'm glad the core of the game worked out alright! I think mood and music is definitely something I'm going to have to work on. Thanks again for dropping by!
@spacewarp Thanks for rating! Yea, controls were a problem from the start of development, not good really, but I'm glad things were ok overall! Making better sounds will be another challenge in the future but I think it'll be worth it. Thanks again for leaving some feedback, it really is great to get the perpective of so many other people!
@tapestry Thank you for the feedback! I'm happy with how the gameplay turned out but I'm glad it worked for other people as well. I did come across that room but unfortunately not until after the Jam, and I don't think it counts as a 'game breaking' bug, but I find it helps if you shoot them with fire the first time you enter the room, as then they run away, and you don't need to waste another energy on killing them. (Watch out though, they always flee to the right if memory serves) Thanks for the feedback though! As I said to @spacewrap it's great to get opinions from so many different people!
Hey! I didn't realise this was your first LD as well! Congrats, you too should be very proud of your first Jam! :wink:It's got a nice bit of everything, from music to graphics to gameplay. I could almost certainly see myself playing it on Newgrounds or Miniclip from back a few years ago. I'm sure overall it could do with some polish, but hey, practice makes perfect!
I love the visuals of the game, the sprites and the bullet effects create for a really nice feel. I think it would have helped to have sound and some more precise controls though. A bullet hell is chaotic, and so it helps to be able to turn directions quickly and be accurate with your firing (perhaps if bullets fired towards the mouse rather than straight forward?).
For a first game though, you should be pretty chuffed with yourself! It's my first Ludum Dare as well, and someone suggested to me that I make a post jam version of my game, perhaps you could do the same with yours? It'd make quite a cool game I reckon! Either way, congrats on your first even Ludum Dare!
I struggled to get going with the game, my arm is now very tired, but you've definitely got the beginnings of a fun game here, and a great game for your first Jam! If you had a few more factors that the player had to consider, and some kind of end goal, I reckon I could find myself playing this long into the night. Well done!
I really like the concept and the interpretation of the theme. I particularly liked the graphics in the background and for the train, and noticed lots of small touches all around the game, and the music was nice as well. I thought though that the gameplay was a bit monotonous, there was a lot of doing the exact same thing over and over. Still, it was a fun game! Well done!
It's a good concept for the game, along with good graphics and the beginning of a overall theme for the game, but as @spliter said, it's a bit difficult to see what the exact goal is, or more specifically what challenge there is to overcome. I think if you had to complete the level by destroying a certain amount of the city (or all of it) without running out of power, and your movement was somewhat more restricted, then it would genuinely work really well. Please don't be disheartened though , if you made a post Combo version, you'd have yourself a really good game (potentially one that might do really well on mobile). Or even if you don't, any entry into LD helps to improve your skills. Well done, no matter it's quality you should be happy to have completed a game!
Definitely a unique take on the theme! Well done! things felt a little tedious what with there only being one police officer and one tech squad, but with a little extra work you've definitely got yourself an interesting RTS/Puzzle game. That, and you've already got a very nice feel to the game going as well! *Bien joué*
Quite an impressive game. I spent a lot of time not really knowing quite what I was doing wrong or how to get past an obstacle, but there weren't any I couldn't overcome, which shows a solid piece of game design! The atmosphere was also well crafted. You definitely need to get some more ratings on this! (Remember to play other peoples games so that yours appears higher in search results)
A post jam version of this game I think would be really cool, and there are definitely ways you can expand it not just in terms of content, but more importantly also in terms of mechanics. Very well done!
Super cool game! It was cool to see a game that did a simple concept **really** well (instead of a more intricate one poorly). There were a couple times in the last level where the yellow tile was covered by wall before I could reach it, but otherwise I really enjoyed it! Also a very neat interpretation of the theme! Good job!
I made it to the end! I thought that the game was really well made, and a great take on the theme. I had to restart the game a couple times as I got myself into situations I couldn't get out of, but I actually had a lot of fun playing! (I reckon if there wasn't an ending to it I could have spent longer playing your game than I spent making mine!)
I did get confused when I started adding propulsion arrows and others disspeared, and it was kind of sad that I couldn't build one huge factory because of that, but besides that the amount of polish on the game (even if it is quite small) meant I was quite happy to play it to the end. If ever you make a post-jam version of the game I would love to play it.
A really fun game and the best take on the theme I've seen so far !
I played with a friend of mine and I found the NumPad controls really hard to use. I wanted to use 5,1,2,3 as if they were arrow keys, but perhaps it would have been good to use w,a,s,d instead?
It was also very hard to see what was going on as everything was so fast, which I know is probably deliberate, but it felt *so fast* that I didn't even have any time to think, especially when trying to look at new cards and what they do. Maybe if different items had different sound effects when they moved into an inventory it might be easier to tell what kinds of cards you need to play without looking? (Maybe? :confounded:)
Either way tough, with a bit of fine tuning this could be an outrageously fun game to play, and it is very impressive for your first Ludum Dare! I would love to see you make a post-jam version!
@pulu I apologize about the keyboard feedback, my bad, that didn't even occur to me.
Hi @tontonpizza. Thanks a bunch for the feedback, and sorry for the late reply (It's been a busy week). I'm sorry you ran into the bug where the player didn't stop moving, I not too sure what would have caused that, but I'm glad you were able to beat the game anyway.
Thanks again for the feedback, and P.S. your profile icon is awesome.
@george-lancaster @anna-petrova @anna-petrova @merpader
Thanks everyone! I'm glad you all found things to enjoy!
For the record, @KookieBeatz was the musician of the two of us (I arranged the music into a program that so that we could get all of the different sounds, but Kookie was the one with actual composition talent!)
@george-lancaster Yes, the game was *very* Metriod/Megaman inspired, those were literally the two games I had in mind when creating the different rooms. Let us know if you come back and beat it!
@jupiter-hadley Awesome! Thanks for playing!
I really liked the visual style of the game. I really liked the idea of the game play, and also how well the game play, graphics and mood all suited each other (a sign of a well made game I think). I would say though that, while I liked that you had to constantly keep your resources above water, I found doing it with the mouse a bit tedious, partly because things were quite small and so harder to click on. Even if you had it so that you click and drag items to move them, instead of clicking to pick them up and clicking to put them down, that might have been easier.
I still think though it was a pretty nifty game , especially for your third Ludum Dare! Well done!
Genuinely seems like a really great concept! Even though you didn't have time to make a lot of game play, even flying around in the rocket ship putting together the different snippets of text I found fun. And of course, the visual art and music are very enjoyable all on their own, especially with the mood they create.
I don't know how big you guys envisioned the game, but it would be awesome to see you challenge yourselves to make 'chapter one' of the game or something like that. Not too much to chew, but enough so that we could see what the game could be. I'm definitely going to check by you guys next Ludum Dare to see what you make!
EDIT: Sorry, I accidentally double clicked publish and it published a second, empty, comment. Sorry! :confounded:
I really like the idea of the game, but I think it would have been a lot more fun if boxes spawned across the whole room, and it wasn't always super easy to find what you were looking for. Having orders with different combinations of boxes (instead of just having three kinds of box) was a cool idea. If you do make an improved version I would love to play it! Good job!
