This is a fun game if played as intended, kinda reminds of Super Crate Box. You forgot a small detail tho, when you start if you go all the way to the left or to the right you can stay there forever and will never lose.

themonax 2017-07-31 15:53

Cool game, very fun to play and I like the graphics ;) ( Why do it need to be instal ? )

skippuku 2017-07-31 15:54

Could you make a stand alone exe? Installing just to play a quick game is a pain.

xonic 2017-07-31 15:57

This game looks and plays very well. The graphics are amazing and perfectly fit the games atmosphere. I only have 2 issues. The game play is very simple and needs more depth, and you can just sit in the corner and win. I don't know if it was intended to grab the key at the top, but I tried anyways without luck. But its still a great game! Good job!

berserkerchris 2017-07-31 16:00

Cool game very fun and hard to play, it reminds of Super Crate Box. If you are with one side on the wall you can't shoot. Maybe its a bug.

belga54 2017-07-31 16:02

##### This game is so fun ! But also it's so hard !!! The graphics seems great and the sounds are well choosen!!! ***Try my game [here](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/battery-of-power)***

madalaski 2017-07-31 16:20

I love the graphics but it was a bit simpler than I was expecting, even for a Ludum Dare game... Add a bit of work into that and you might have yourself a fully fledged indie game!

serval-games 2017-07-31 20:26

Cool idea with fun and challenging gameplay at first i have problems with understanding shooting mechanics but after a while I got used to it

notime4games 2017-07-31 20:43

Avast detected this as a virus, couldn't play it :(

flobar 2017-07-31 20:46

@notime4games haha sorry bout that, just watch the video instead lol

antti-haavikko 2017-07-31 20:52

Aww, this looks super sweet and I can't play it cause I'm on a mac :(

miepmiep 2017-07-31 20:53

I really like the game although it's so hard. Remembering not to press space to jump was also kinda challening.

amastryukov 2017-07-31 20:55

The game is solid - the rules are fairly straightforward and the artwork looks simple and well done. The gameplay is a bit too difficult for my taste. The controls are unusual and a bit tricky to get used to (kept pressing spacebar to jump). I enjoyed how the time slowed down while you were charging.

flobar 2017-07-31 20:58

@antti-haavikko sorry bout that, but I don't have a mac or html exporter. Thanks for checking it out anyway.

maldo19 2017-07-31 21:19

It's a really good game, as others are saying it's really too short even for LD I would have liked to see more levels but the concept is really good. I really liked the slowmo effect, the only downsize to the slowmo is that as the enemy's movement speed is too fast it doesn't give much time for dodging. Good Job!

jakylgamer 2017-07-31 21:21

the gamejolt link was broken for me but i downloaded the source to play, seems good man

hard and fun thumbs up!

flobar 2017-07-31 21:31

@jakylgamer thanks for making the effort. I appreciate it.

littlelegend 2017-07-31 22:17

Hey i like the atmosphere and artstyle of the game. The mechanigs are cool in theory, but unfortunetly the game dosent force you to use the properly, so you can just stay somewhere and camp :O

oliverlevay 2017-07-31 22:20

Can't download it on gamejolt :/

rakowu 2017-07-31 22:25

Avast blockt the games, after deactivating it run :D Funny little game. But is ther a way to get the key? Also there would be great a score, for example for time during the game for beating. The jump button was a bit confusing but overall it was fun :D

P.d. Sorry for my english

majamiltu 2017-07-31 22:25

Cool little game. It somewhat reminds me of Super Crate Box. I like the idea of being able to shooting only when charging. Good job!

johnnydalvi 2017-07-31 22:36

Cool game, really like the concept, I think that the first level is too difficult

peredom 2017-07-31 23:52

I really wanna play this but my antivirus doesn't want me to!! Could you please upload it as a zip or rar file? This way more people like me will play it instead of going to the next.

acoto87 2017-08-01 05:13

Cool game!

alier-qiu 2017-08-01 09:40

lovely design of the torch Boy and monsters

falk-bruskeland 2017-08-01 09:42

Awesome game!

yves 2017-08-01 09:47

The idea of this game is pretty cool but it's damn hard! I couldn't even finish the first level after 20 tries :D :'(

flobar 2017-08-01 09:55

@yves Haha there is only one level. I'm a sucker for tough games.

tomdev 2017-08-01 10:32

This game is so cute, it hard which make you play for a while, I wish it was longer I also would love to see a html version

flobar 2017-08-01 10:35

@tomdev thanks for the feedback, I'm working on the html5 as we speak.

steff-kempink 2017-08-01 10:51

You executed on a really nifty concept! I like how you managed to get in important details like screenshake and the slowdown during chargin. It's a shame you couldn't get 1 or 2 more levels in. Did you consider adding a timer in, so then even when you can't finish all the content it can still be a time-attack challenge? I'd love to be able to challenge my team members.

flobar 2017-08-01 11:01

@steff-kempink thanks for the constructive feedback. I did considered the timer, but then I removed last minute.

zelos 2017-08-01 11:22

Really fun game. The graphics are great and the mechanics are very creative. I am unsure what the goal of the game is supposed to be though.

The game says 'how long can you survive?', but that's weird, since you can just stay in the corner and constantly press L -> J -> L -> J -> ... and will never die. But then there's that key at the top, and when you reach the door the game ends. It's unclear what exactly I'm supposed to be doing.

Then there's a slight balancing issue. You have two options as far as I see it: 1. Charge up and try to go for they key afterwards. This is hard as hell and near impossible to do. 2. Immediately jump up when you spawn, shoot three times, jump to get the key and avoid enemies and go down. You'll win the game in like 2 seconds.

I don't really know what the intention was, but it was really unclear. I'm going to assume you wanted to put in more levels, but ran out of time, which is unfortunate.

Overall this game is really awesome and something that could be made into a full game for sure. Great work.

flobar 2017-08-01 11:35

@zelos thanks so much for putting in the time and giving me such good feedback. When I first started out I wanted to make it a 'how long can you last' type of game with a timer, but then I decided to change direction and give it more of a purpose. Retrieve the key and escape the room. I did run out of time because of play testing and wasn't able to expand on it. But I do feel like this is a promising start to something bigger.

boxfort 2017-08-01 11:37

Cute artstyle and solid gameplay, reminds me a lot of super crate box!

boxfort 2017-08-01 11:37

Cute artstyle and solid gameplay, reminds me a lot of super crate box!

omnipotentindie 2017-08-01 15:48

The game has a great concept, is executed well, has fitting graphics, and plays splendidly. All in all, definitely nothing short of amazing. I'm amazed that you were able to make it in 48 hours. The only thing I would suggest, is adding a score. Currently there is nothing to make you want to keep playing. I know you were going to add a key that leads out of the room, but adding a score would be easy, and would have had me playing for a LOT longer. Other than that, this is a awesome game, that I had a lot of fun with.

michael-feldman 2017-08-01 16:18

Hey thanks for the feedback on my game! I really, really liked yours. It reminded me of a game I made a few weeks ago about a character with a glow around them in a dark cave. Check it out https://maftkd.itch.io/fools-gold . Enough self-promotion tho...

I really liked the charging action. The screen shake, the time slowing down, the glowing auro. It made me feel like I was some sort of hero shaking the earth beneath me. The graphics were good too. Reminded me a lot of the old super mario... Also nice font. The italic just goes with the power theme.

The AIs are fast and intense making the game really challenging (but fun!) and it fit the theme well. Great job!

tuxic 2017-08-01 17:03

this is really nice. Great difficulty, great looking pixel art, nice controls (although the JKL part is a bit awkward at first). Really had a blast!

theblondebass 2017-08-01 17:08

I really liked it, it's interesting to see games where you have to plan a route instead of just blasting whatever's in your face. It's a bit short though...

franfox 2017-08-01 17:18

I get stuck in the tutorial because I didn't know the space bar was the skip option 😅 Anyway, the game is cool and fun. I love how the character charges his energy and how you need to manage it to fight the enemies, pretty challenging.

skippuku 2017-08-01 17:27

Fun little game. I felt it was maybe a bit too hard though, especially in the beginning.

mathstr0fficial 2017-08-01 17:34

This was a great concept, but the execution, in my opinion, was a little off. For one, the control scheme was extremely unfamiliar to me, making even getting to the first platform near-impossible for me. As stated in other replies, it's also extremely difficult at the beginning. Maybe that's the amount of enemies, maybe something else, I don't quite know. But overall, I would love to see a longer, better executed version of this post-LD!

mathstr0fficial 2017-08-01 17:34

(What is with me and posting a blank post every time? 😅)

flobar 2017-08-01 17:35

@notime4games @antti-haavikko @oliverlevay @peredom

I've uploaded an HTML5 version to http://gamejolt.com/games/torch-boy/272794

flobar 2017-08-01 17:37

@mathstr0fficial thanks a lot for the feedback. I totally agree with you on all those factors. I do tend to take this game further in the near future.

richard-bunn 2017-08-01 17:42

Nice charge/shoot idea and a brilliant little concept. The enemies spawning at a constant rate makes it a little predictable and harder than it needs to be from the start. Would love to see this idea expanded into a more considered puzzle-action platformer. Great potential.

daydreamerstudios 2017-08-01 17:50

Great game! The pixelart in this game is amazing. The sound is also nicely done. Keep up the good work!

speedysloth99 2017-08-01 18:03

This game is so fun! A bit hard, but the incredible graphics and gameplay make up for it!

loktor 2017-08-01 18:03

** First Impression **: That one looks nice :)

** Sound **: The sound effects are really well done and greatly enchance the game :)

** Graphics **: Those are really nice, clean look and everything fits really well together :)

** Gameplay **: A really interesting concept, especially that few seconds of thinking ahead while loading up due to the decrease game speed :D One thing tho as others have mentioned the gameplay is too hard, i really tried a lot of times but i couldn't get past the initial level :O

** Overall **: You can be really proud of what you achieved :) and i would really like to play an adjusted version of the game so that i can get past the first level :D

johngun 2017-08-01 18:05

Fun game with a nice take on the theme. Great work

thorneto 2017-08-01 18:14

Well I'm really bad at this game but its one of the more exciting ones I've played. Really well balanced mechanic with the charging up. Nice little artwork as well! Definitely fits the theme well.

shell-pirate 2017-08-01 18:31

I would really like to see the main shooting mechanic expanded on in a bigger game, because I think it's pretty creative and could be very fun. As it stands though, I can't say that I loved the game. The room is a little too tight and the amount of enemies is way too big for the player to have a feasible chance at getting to the key (or at least I felt like I didn't). Without being able to reach the key, the game starts to feel pointless as you can just sit in a corner and never die. That said, I still think the mechanic is a great idea and the artstyle was pretty well done. I suppose I can just say work on it more and it could become a really great game. I guess that is also one of the forms success can take when it comes to Ludum Dare entries, so good work on that front!

some-nerd 2017-08-01 19:25

I wouldn't call this a game, it's a one level prototype. For what it is, it delivers on what it promises.

estebe 2017-08-01 19:57

This game is promising!

The graphics are deceptively simple looking but very well done. Effective sounds too. They fit the action.

I don't know how to get the key by the way. The game tells me to get the key, but when I get to the cage I can't grab it. Tried every button. So that was a bummer for me.

Gameplay is very brutal. Hard, but manageble once you practice. The charging gives you a little breather. I liked that, nice touch!

olowynd 2017-08-01 20:07

Nice game ! I haven't immediatly understood that you should destroy the key cage to escape so I've try killing minions, thinking it will break them after killing them all or something. But once you figure out that you need to break the cage yourself, it's a lot harder but you can finish the game really quickly. The concept is interesting, it's too bad there is only one level, it will be really cool with some twists on this base concept (but it's a game jam so it's normal and it means it's good :] ). Really clean for a compo, the graphics, the sounds, you even took time for make a title screen and a tutorial, that's awesome !

moosalicious 2017-08-01 20:19

Very cool concept! I would've loved to see more levels but I see more people noted that. I love the visual polish and gamefeel. Screenshake and other stuff feels very polished, as does the slowdown. Maybe a timer would be cool?

ohmaigawd 2017-08-01 21:00

Nice concept! The gameplay is simple and responsive, and the powering up the weapons feels great. I didn't realize I could just hide in the corner so I had a hard time actually completing the level - the enemies spawn a bit too fast or the level is too small. Anyways, I managed to beat the game in the end. Well done!

gwinnell 2017-08-01 21:08

This looks cool but I just can't play it. W as a jump key is desperately needed.

gwinnell 2017-08-01 21:12

OK that may not be true. I managed to complete it by running to top left straight away, charging to max, and letting out about 3 shots and running straight back down. (The hardest part was still hitting the right keys!) Movement and the game feel was nice anyway!

crabman 2017-08-01 21:45

Not sure if I missed something obvious, but it seemed like there was only one way to finish it, by going after the key straight away before the minions pile up. Once they start, it looked like it was actually impossible to advance, since they keep piling on and you're just busy taking them out with no time or room for going after the key left. Still, it was an interesting twist on the old Mario Bros Classic, so it was fun, though sadly a bit short.

michaeltwg 2017-08-01 22:27

Cute, precise and well executed. Well done

wrexialmt 2017-08-01 22:46

Great execution! only complain is the damn K for jump.... W would've been so much more intuitive. Good job anyways a minor quirk doesn't ruin a good game!

uzyfeo 2017-08-01 22:52

Wow this was really fun man!

Quite short but whatever, you have great base to build upon :)

Definitely work with this one, would like to play it as a real game someday ;)

cnoble 2017-08-01 23:34

That was fun!! I didn't care that there was only one level, that first one was brutal. I like the concept though. Nice tight controls that were unforgiving if you messed up. Keep it up! I'd love to see a full fleshed out version of this :)

bewelge 2017-08-01 23:53

Simple but quite fun! :) Great job!

bocodillo 2017-08-02 04:06

A cool, simple but well implemented idea. Found the game a little difficult personally but it enjoyed it anyway. The graphics and audio were good as well.

donvermo 2017-08-02 05:08

Lots of nice potential here, the game is punishing but fair and the mechanics work quite smoothly. Would like to see it explored further :)

togis 2017-08-02 06:07

I uploaded my gameplay of this game on youtube, you can find it here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24sdAiVpPBk

Thanks for being part of the stream :)

flobar 2017-08-02 06:59

@togis Thanks so much, I know it's a bit difficult but I appreciate it.

peter-sheehan 2017-08-02 07:29

Super cute graphics, but it got a little too difficult for my tastes. Maybe an easier first level for the player to experiment with the really unique mechanics.

nidup 2017-08-02 07:34

Great entry, well executed! Lovely pixel art, solid gameplay & good ambiance  It's imho a bit hard to play at the beginning, the difficulty could be more progressive, maybe with a super simple tutorial level allowing the player to understand the mechanisms. It could also be a bit more dynamic by adding a bit of screen shaking when the player dies shoot and some feedback (particles?) when jumping. Anyway, very good job :bulb:

jima 2017-08-02 07:55

This game is quite hard but after you finish it you have sweet feeling of victory, it was very fun. I loved super responsive controls and cute graphic. Great game!

mikeliosus 2017-08-02 09:31

Hi, FloBar!

Good entry! I finished your game. Here is my review and explanation of marks:

Fun: 3

First of all screenshake makes everything better! :) Remembers "Super Crate Box" very much) Cool charge effect. Don't know why you opt-out from Mood gragh. I wanted to mark your mood 4. It's pretty good.

Why not marked higher:

1. Level design is pretty hard, repetetive and monotonous. I think it could be better if you try to desynchronize your spawn points. Make spawns a little bit more frequent and place platforms assimetrically. It will make your level less monotonous. If you want to keep the hardness, you can raise cage HP. As result you'll need to stay under the cage more time. This is hard even if spawns will be more frequent.

2. The charging effect is pretty. But from side of game design - why you display it like an aura? It's a bit confusing game design decision when aura itself cause no affect.

3. Controls are a bit uncomfortable for a classic platformer. I think better to place jump on "W" or "Space". And if you decide that second hand should be used for shots - you can place them on arrows

Innovation: 2

Super Crate Box pretty similar to your entry. But you used a few other mechanics like charging and a key cage.

Theme: 3

Theme fits well.

Graphics: 3

A pretty pixel art. I really like it.

Audio: 2

Good sound for charging and shooting, but no soundtrack and jump sound is loud. I playing all games in headphones, and jump sound hurts my ears even when I turn sound low.

Overall: 3

First of all - a great entry, man! Yes, your game have a few weak points, but you made everything together and working and this all by one person in tough deadlines. I can not imagine what you can do if you would have more time :)

xsior 2017-08-02 09:51

The game looks good and have interesting gameplay concept with charging power, but in all goes in vain because you can just shoot by spamming l j. Only 1 level is also a bit meh, as the game could be really fun with interesting level design. That's one of few jam games thay I would want to see polished and released with more content. Pretty good job overall mate :).

wolderado 2017-08-02 09:56

The graphics and audios are cute. But gameplay was a little hard. The enemies just kept coming

antti-haavikko 2017-08-02 11:04

Oh yes, finally got to play it after seeing this several times, loving the look of it and clicking on it being saddened by the windows only version. And the gameplay didn't disappoint at all!

I liked the difficulty, it was very short after all. And the biggest difficulty was the controls for me. I kept trying to hit space to jump and got shoot/charge buttons mixed quite a lot in the beginning. I think those two could actually be combined to be the same button. Charging when holding and shooting when tapping.

The sounds were nice but got kinda repetitive fast. If there was some sweet action packed chiptune music on the background, it would help to mask to monotonous sounds. And a trick I personally like to use is adding some random pitch shifts so the sound effects are a bit different each time they are played. Dunno if this is easily doable with the engine you used (GM?).

Very well done! Especially considering that it was your first jam.

edit: Holy crap, you have a ton of ratings already! I guess thats what you get for having an awesome looking cover image. And sure, I think I've seen your name on pretty much every games comment section as well, I bet it also helps ;)

edit two: One more thing. Up and down on the main menu both go down. Not really any issue but though I'd mention it.

mrboxbox 2017-08-02 11:12

Neat game. The pixel art was well made and overall the game had a nice look to it. However i would have added more levels with a low enemy spawn rate at first and having it increase with every level. If you do this i think you would have a great little game. This is very good work for someone's first jam game. I would love to see you work on this a bit more and release it.

diptoman 2017-08-02 12:58

A nice simple take on the theme. I like the visual respresentation of the ammo you have. But the game is super hard. I'm stuck at the first level coz those guys keep coming relentlessly >.>

jharler 2017-08-02 14:56

Wow that was tough! I like the pixel art and the idea of charging up your attack goes well with the theme. Nice work!

svr-audio 2017-08-02 15:29

The torch boy is so cute, although the game is very simple I can see this as a full game in the future, the gameplay is cool and I liked how you used the theme, very creative.

reggnos 2017-08-02 16:11

Nice small game, its a same there is only one level i would love to play more. The graphics are nice and the charging and shooting mechanics are polished and fun.

quaternius 2017-08-02 16:28

Really liked the idea, i liked the sound effects though i almost go deaf, they were really loud at first haha. Great job overall!

drachmor 2017-08-02 16:43

What a neat little game! The mechanics were very satisfying and felt very polished. The simple art style was effective with the sound design, and it made for a great mood. I would have loved to see more levels, but overall you did a really good job.

mihai-vartolomeu 2017-08-02 16:59

I loved the challenge! I was really hoping for more levels. Good Game!

pitpony 2017-08-02 17:21

The mechanic for charging your power is very well executed - I love that it slows down time a little. I think you matched the theme perfectly. I found the game a little difficult but that's just me :) Well done.

pixelproductions 2017-08-02 17:26

Nice job, it's a simple but an awesome game. But I think it would be better if it have more levels.

theonethatneverwas 2017-08-02 18:34

Fun and simple game. I really enjoyed playing it. At first it was difficult but then I got the hang of it. Congrats to the team!

fmdkdd 2017-08-02 18:39

Really liked the tradeoff mechanism of charging versus shooting, creating a sense of urgency that fits the theme quite well. The slow down is a nice touch (and allowed me to get to grab the key).

Graphics are minimal, but coherent and very readable. My only complaint is that it's way too short!

surovyi 2017-08-02 20:26

Hey! Short but interesting game. Didn't manage to understand how exactly should I break the cage, but c'mon it was obvious :nerd:. Good job!

gonutz 2017-08-02 20:26

Hey, very nice, a game as short as mine! ;-)

Nice game, I like the in-game tutorial! No need to read through your submission page (which I never do) so that is a big plus!

The sound effects are good, they fit the atmosphere very well, did you use sfxr for those?

The graphics are nice, they are simple yet effective and the style is consistent, which is very important. It gives you that feeling of darkness. Also I like the animations, a little screen shake really goes a long way here.

Overall a very nive game, thank you and keep up the good work!

gil4 2017-08-02 21:13

A solid entry, albeit a bit too short, second game I finish in 2-3 minutes during this LD. Guess it's fine for the jam though, less gameplay, but more thinking put into making it, right? The graphics and art are combining pretty well into a neat old-school entry with an interesting take on the theme and core mechanics. Good job!

dragonxvi 2017-08-02 21:27

Neat little mechanic, but quite short and surprisingly difficult. With a few more levels to gradually raise the difficulty it'd work pretty well. Like how the charge slowed down time, but it also seems to kill your jump momentum which felt a bit clunky. Pretty cool!

rahtainka 2017-08-02 22:22

The first level was to hard for me. But I like the graphics and the gameplay. Nice little game.

hhsaez 2017-08-02 23:05

I agree that the first level is too hard (at least for me). But I really like what you did with the theme Good work!

arden 2017-08-02 23:38

pro strategy - rush the key as soon as the level starts and win.

This game would have been more fun if there were a few levels with a progression in difficulty. But everyone else already said that. :innocent:

deathray 2017-08-03 01:42

The "L" key didn't work for me (using the web version) so I couldn't get past the tutorial.

bajarymi 2017-08-03 02:16

You should definitely add more levels to this game and do a full release. I loved playing it. It had a really good vibe of the original DK arcade. 5/5 ★★★★★

saintheiser 2017-08-03 03:10

Good stuff! Like how you use theme and link it with gameplay. It's a pity there only one level =(

d-studios 2017-08-03 04:05

This game was very good. It was challenging, but very addicting. I also liked the use of the theme in that the theme is essential to the game, but doesn't overcomplicate the gameplay. Though the sound effects were good, this game could have been better if it had a moody soundtrack. In conclusion, I liked this game's addicting unique gameplay, but it could have been better if it had some music.

articnet 2017-08-03 05:28

Nice game! But damn was that hard!

jusw85 2017-08-03 05:39

Nice and simple game. I loved it! I found the easiest way to beat the game was to rush to the top platform directly under the key while the enemies haven't spawned and start shooting.

pixelbukkake 2017-08-03 08:50

Really liked it! Powering up gave me the real supersajan feeling^^ Its bit hard though. I would have loved to see more but easier levels, but i guess there was no more time :D

funkyhippo 2017-08-03 11:29

Nice little game, well-functioning and easy to understand gameplay (reminds me a lot of super crate box). It's nice and responsive, and everything (art, audio etc.) fits together perfectly. And bloodyhell is it hard if you're a platformer-noob like me.. I loved it!

damoy 2017-08-03 14:19

Very quite simple and nice game ! A little too hard however, I think, congrats for the work !

vulpem 2017-08-03 19:20

Goddamn, this is hard... however, i can't complain about it. The "retro" style makes it feel like it must be this way, almost ;P jej

Congrats, it is a pretty cool concept, and it's well executed. It feels polished, and that simple mechanic you've found it's a lot of fun on it's own!

My only complain (yes i always have to complain about something) is that it feels kinda weird how the "charge" stops you in mid air and drops you slowly, ignoring any speed you had before. After a while, i got used to it and began using it to my advantatge, but... well. I had to say it.

Overall, a good concept with good execution. What else can i say? Great work!

coomzy 2017-08-03 19:58

I really liked the mechanic thought it was done very nicely. Short and hard, would have been nice if it had a couple more levels, good job

chris-coe 2017-08-03 21:36

Wow, very difficult game, which is probably just fine due to its length. It took a while to get the hang of the rhythm of the enemies and how the charge is useful for avoiding them at times. It took me several times, but I got it! Good mechanics and all.

oab 2017-08-04 07:22

Game doesn't work on Safari. It show blank screen with sounds. Screen Shot 2017-08-04 at 5.20.27 pm.png

theflyingkeyboard 2017-08-04 11:23

Fun game with interesting graphics, but definitelly very hard. Everything seems to be polished, have not found any bugs while playing. Great Job!

smokib 2017-08-04 15:24

Cute graphics, nice controls, and good concept. Really hard and I didn't even beat the first level :(

epono 2017-08-04 15:54

Very cool one, a bit hard for me though :)

recursor 2017-08-04 16:38

The game is quite short, and I wish there were more levels as it was quite fun while it lasted. I really like the way time slows down when you are charging. Having the key locked in a cage also increases the challenge as well. You could add a few more game mechanics, a bunch more levels, maybe even a boss or two, and have a cool little game from this. Very nice.

lord-404 2017-08-04 20:57

Short and easy, nice background art.

mianagames 2017-08-04 22:40

Nice game. Congrats!

gelisam 2017-08-05 00:07

That was... short. I thought this was only the first level of something bigger! But maybe I'm not playing it right. I rushed to the top while there weren't too many enemies yet, that's the only way I managed to stay alive more than 5 seconds.

josehzz 2017-08-05 00:33

I like the old school graphics, its really hard to beat the first level.

massimog 2017-08-05 00:40

That was good, I feel like there were too many enemies but because it's only one level that may add necessary padding. You definitely should have made more levels, but if you ran out of time that's understandable. I hope to see a post jam version with more content and more ways to deal with enemies. Also, add space for jumping.

2017-08-05 03:35

Good game. But why did I need to install it?

flobar 2017-08-05 12:48

@ediamonds) you don't need to install it, there's a web version for it. Go to http://gamejolt.com/games/torch-boy/272794 and click the blue play button.

davideperozzi 2017-08-05 17:43

It's very hard.. i tried it for 20 minutes and couldn't get the key :( The gampeplay and feedback feels good and the graphics are amazing! Overall i liked it :) Maybe i retry it after a couple of hours. Well done!

ethan-kennerly 2017-08-05 18:30

When torchlight revealed the door with a keyhole, I felt impressed! If you continue to develop this, I would continue to play if I could survive getting to the first key.

solah 2017-08-05 18:48

It's so hard and frustrating. If an enemy falls on you in a diagonal, you can do nothing! Graphics are nice and the mechanics are really interesting, but I can't even get the key x) (probably because I'm bad). Nice job for doing this alone!

almax 2017-08-05 21:09

Brilliant idea and well executed, the risk/reward between charging and shoot was both challenging and satisfying. Completed in under a minute however and was sad to only have one level to play! Please make more!

johnny-turbo 2017-08-05 21:43

Cool! There was definitely a solid gameplay loop there that had me hooked for quite a bit. This is totally a game within the spirit of a game jam, something very simple and short but looks good, plays well, and puts a smile on the player's face. I really wish there would have been some more levels but you clearly have a good starting point so you can build some more! Looking forward to more jam games from you!

temmy 2017-08-05 21:44

I'm getting a 403 error on the HTML5 version. Downloaded and played but couldn't get past the first level!

Love the premise though. Very nicely executed.

flobar 2017-08-05 21:46

@temmy sorry to hear about the 403 error. I intentionally made the level difficult because there is only one level :).

goloso-games 2017-08-05 21:52

Great entry (and a hard one too). Really like the art. Too bad there is only one level to play, I want to see more ! The tutorial is a nice touch. Really good work.

jake-cope 2017-08-05 22:49

Very pretty, solid game. Simple but I still found to be quite challenging. I was expecting more levels, but maybe it was better to end it before I got to mad at it and rage quit. Nice job!

rikoclon 2017-08-05 23:03

Cool concept of charging and shooting, not exactly innovative being the only unique mechanic, but fit the theme well. the graphics looked great. the audio could have used a backing number. I like how the bad guys dont just fill the level they run there coarse and leave, good call there. would have loved another level. I liked the challenge. Great work doing this all on your own!

herniewise 2017-08-05 23:13

Good job! The slow falling mechanic on power charge was a key to success <3

mrtroy 2017-08-06 00:07

Seemed so easy but was so difficult. This game was really fun and I wish it were longer.

pbg 2017-08-06 03:33

Super solid mechanics. I just wish it were longer. Nicely done!

varelsegames 2017-08-06 03:49

Liked the slow falling on the charge, I was very surprised when it ended after the first level.

zicboy 2017-08-06 05:24

Short and sweet game. Nicely done!

yetman 2017-08-06 15:07

If I haven't seen the gameplay videos, I would have thought it was impossible to win. The concept is nice and innovative and the visual and audio aesthetics are good too.

lereveur 2017-08-06 20:55

Nice game for first LD! Very hard, but nice! Good job!

levidsmith 2017-08-06 23:45

Tough little game. Neat concept that reminded me of Mega Man with the charge up mechanic. I was able to finish it after about 20 tries. Maybe slow down the rate of spawned enemies and add more levels.

daninfiction 2017-08-08 13:09

Favourite game of the jam so far. Well done :)

kpded 2017-08-09 07:45

Fun little game!

Art and music of the game perfectly fit the mood and theme

automatonvx 2017-08-09 08:31

Very super crate box but cute graphics and interesting idea with the charge mechanic but for me in a way doesn't quite work as it is because after a while i realised the way to win is to not bother trying to shoot them and just dodge. Short and sweet

nuebomundo 2017-08-11 06:36

I loved the graphics! Simple but charismatic.

Regarding the first and only level, making the enemies respawn endlessly and so close to one-another in such a cramped space, and having the need to recharge to attack is not a good mix, and eventually made me just rush next to the cage and mindlessly try to break it, ignoring the level itself. With enemies way more far from each other and a limited number of them, it would be satisfying either to defeat them all, or reaching the cage without getting killed. I imagine a lot of them getting stuck in the lower level, transforming it into a death pit that could combine in great ways with levels where you may fall there trying to reach the platform where the cage is, creating a "double level design": You take the risk of defeating as many as possible at the beginning and have a more safe second half, or make your way to the you-may-fall section right away, creating a more dangerous landing for yourself at the same time! That kinda thing.

Apart from that, I wouldn't limit how much you can charge, but making the character stunned for a moment if you overdo it, or making it move slower if you charged way to much, as if you treated yourself to a big meal! (going away once you used your attack a couple of times)

For a first entry, you did a great job, and created a base that can have many interesting forms and applications!

flobar 2017-08-11 07:59

@nuebomundo wow thanks so much for your constructive feedback. I know I focused too much on the charge and shooting mechanic and too little on the level design. I wasn't happy with the level but I ran out of time. But I'll definitely take your feedback in consideration when I continue with this game. Thanks a lot!

codechomper 2017-08-11 13:54

I Recently played your game during a live stream at your request. [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEKsM8vugRs) .

One of my FAVORITES so far. I know you only have one level but that is ok, your graphics were amazing, game feel was solid, mechanics were innovative, the game was challenging, I felt like I had to play until I completed it, instant restarts were great... Fantastic I can't wait to see this game in the Steam store with more levels characters and a story.

if you haven't already please give my game a try [Zombie Power Station](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/zombie-power-station) HTML5 Thanks

flobar 2017-08-11 19:15

@codechomper awesome, I'm glad you liked the challenge. I will give your game a try.

saucygames 2017-08-11 22:49

Very cool mechanics, very difficult as well. Enjoyed beating the level and hope to see more from this game. GG

manafest 2017-08-12 00:11

It's so hard aaaaargh! :)

valphera 2017-08-14 18:41

Cool short game! It felt like the shoot control was useless and that shooting could have been triggered when "k" was released. Too bad there isn't more levels, would like to play longer!

captain-laserstorm 2017-08-16 17:18

Good game! I really liked the graphics. :)

daniel-olsson 2017-08-16 23:50

Short but challenging and well balanced game. Gj!

derpyjish 2017-08-17 17:35

Wow! Pretty though but well made and enjoyable! That's pretty *awesome*

zyxer 2017-08-18 11:20

Them I think I'm bad at this, I must have tried the first level 50 times (really!) or so, and I didn't make it. I usually don't rate a game if I was able to play so little of it. But I think I got a good first impression.

The graphics are really well done, fit perfectly together. Sound is a bit weak, could have had some music. The game mechanic can be a bit frustrating, but with a less steep learning curve i presume you could get the hang of it. The controls feel great. If you plan to continue with the Project, you should definitly do it, just consider a less steep learning curve ;)

jason200101 2017-08-20 14:17

Nice game! The graphics look nice, the main mechanic is usefull and stratigic, the fact you can rapid fire as long as you're charged is great, and you can avoid lots of fails using the time-slow mechanic when you're recharging!

The sound effects are good, and the only negative that I have to say is the lack of content. More than one level would be nice, and would improve the quality of your game, making it look more completed, and not just a prototype.

Overall, I enjoyed it! Well done!

edwingamedev 2017-08-21 00:15

5.PNG Done! The game is good, the graphics fits well with the empty atmosphere, the sound could be better or have music, but it is very fun! Good job!

2017-10-04 21:36

Very challenging game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 39 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zttkWtUJU-8
