LD39 — Running out of Power

Super Starcade PANIC by Ellian 2017-08-21T04:04:51Z

Oh wow, this game is incredibly well crafted! I love the Earthbound-like graphics, and the theme really sold it! It's also nice to see a character-centric management sim. I really like this! :D

The only one point I think could be addressed is that the days take a load of time to pass. Other than that, it sure can flourish into an awesome game with some more time! :D

Ardis Mobile Mission by Franklins Ghost 2017-08-19T18:07:10Z

Seems like the battery runs a bit too quick, and when resetting it doesn't go back to 100% :P

I really like the concept and gameplay here, it's very interesting to play a game about gathering information from your phone. :D

My Dream by Local Minimum 2017-08-07T15:41:19Z

Dang, that was heavy. And an accomplishment in extending beyond the basics of the engine. Really honed the craft that, indeed.

I... honestly didn't get it much, playing through it feels like a draining experience(that must be the point, I suppose), but it's a feat and it's moody as heck.

Very well done.

Truck, Fuel my Rockets by garethjenkins 2017-08-20T14:25:39Z

Dang, this game is very fun and fluid, this could make for an excellent multiplayer game on Steam! :D It could really use some improvements to the difficulty, and maybe actually have some way to get in your opponents way. But other than that, it's really good in its core, and that's what really matters.

One plus: I really like that the fuel is freely moving, so you have to take care about not spilling it when the truck is full. That's great!

Plagued Station by Mr_Field 2017-08-19T16:53:38Z

This is a really amazing CaveStory-like game. Great use of the theme, and great job doing it in 72 hours only. Loved the credits! :D

PLASMAGUN! by yuigoto 2017-08-21T10:41:56Z

Hey, this is great! This looks very great(excellent pixel graphics there) and the game's core is solid, and there are lots of little details and craft through the game(like how the plasma keeps depleting because it's leaking, and it shows in the graphics :D).

Just as a bit of polish, the shooting doesn't have a good "feel" to it(I almost didn't notice I was shooting for a while), but this is excellent. And kudos for making it on HTML5, makes it a lot easier to play and rate! :)

Reverse Thrust by tiffi 2017-08-21T00:47:11Z

I'll say, I like the way you've made the lighting look cool with normal maps on the sprites. Other than that, it's a pretty standard shmup. :)

POWER! Run Out ! by angry-cyboot 2017-08-21T04:15:06Z

I'm honestly not sure what's going on in this game. It seems there's something to do about transfering energy from some containers to others, but I can't figure how to pick energy up or deliver it, or what the machines do.

Robot-bird-scientist is a very novel idea, though.

Cyberhell Cleaner by EricQuagmire 2017-08-19T19:52:38Z

Great style and great music!

Surge by machinescreen 2017-08-20T19:17:43Z

Very fun and well done at the core. Could have more content as the game goes on, but it's great as a jam product. :D

Rush by Shinmera 2017-08-07T21:59:00Z

The art and lighting is pretty good (has a Limbo silhouetted feel to it) and I enjoyed the level design(the misdirection in the second level was tricky, but well done). The warning lights could be more indicative of actual danger though, and the movement is rather clunky.

Power Rhythm by sparewizard 2017-08-21T00:42:14Z

I think you're the only rhythm game I've seen in this whole roster, so you already won me on that! :V

No Sorcerer's Sky by TheFlyingKeyboard 2017-08-09T00:31:10Z

The game is not very clear, but not hard to figure out, either. You could have included that little explanation screen in the game, too. :P

Also, you mostly use the mouse, but have to use the keyboard to go back. That's just a little odd, but not really bad.

I like the game, in general, the cheeky ending as I lost was appreciated. :) Good job there.

Lantern by Kaban 2017-08-09T16:04:54Z

This is a very simple but also very solid game. The art style is charming and unique, and the controls are pretty clear. Very good indeed.

One point I'll make: it'd be interesting if the fleshlight took more time to charge when it's at a lower charge. If you did that, I'm sorry but I really didn't notice. It's nothing major, though, the game is still very well made. Congrats!

Save The Day ! by juan 2017-08-04T15:53:49Z

Simple and cool, not anything to write home about, though. The trade-off of getting more life by accelerating is interesting, but it could use more variation as the time goes by.

Oh, and the graphics look nice. Those are some smooth asteroids, there.

Captain Abraham's Inter-Dimensional Adventures by kantieno 2017-08-21T01:27:56Z

The graphics are great, but this really needs a solid gameplay loop. A point, so to speak. But the movement also feels pretty good, so that's a plus. :)

Get Rich Efficiently by CobaltRisen 2017-07-31T22:25:12Z

Very fun energy management sim, I hope to see it evolving in the future :D

One detail: the Boiler actually costs $100 and not $50 :P

Running out of robots by Offz 2017-08-09T16:19:56Z

That was kind of obfuscating, and took some figuring out. And I also feel the human character was mostly unnecessary; in fact, they only served to move the camera around and then I had to move back to center to keep working. :P

I like the idea very much, though. Maybe this could be more interesting if the robots had their own movement, so you had to "convince" them to move onto more important things and hope they'd be efficient enough. :P

Long Distance Runner by easy82 2017-08-07T21:51:01Z

It's a very basic runner, and I feel that the random generator is a bit too random. Sometimes it feels like there's nothing I can do to not collide with something, especially when the speed raises. The concept is solid, though and I absolutely love the graphics. Also the music is very smooth and pleasant.

Pura The Robot by Ramkey 2017-08-19T19:49:08Z

Very interesting concept, especially how leaving behind certain parts affects the gameplay. The physics could get some improvement, especially on pushing objects.

Space Power Defender by EdwinGameDev 2017-08-21T03:53:54Z

The game is very simple and effective, and I like the graphics, also simple but very charming! That's some very solid work, good job!

Low Power - Energy Management RTS by 3mpty 2017-08-04T16:00:03Z

I like the cards/TD mechanics, plus the idea of having alien tofu as enemies to have them be just white cubes. ;P

There's something odd going on with selecting the structures on the HTML5 version, though, the brackets are appearing a long way to the left and below the actual structures.

LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

At least it's not death... by Ajayajayaj 2018-12-27T21:42:06Z

I'm not sure if the weird camera spinning around was intentional or not... and the text configuration made it impossible to know which the sacrifices were to my choices.

And I'll second the observation that when you die pressing A/D because you were moving, the game chooses one option automatically. :/

At least it's not death... by Ajayajayaj 2018-12-27T22:40:57Z

@ajayajayaj The A's do display as triangles, yes, but I figured that was intentional. The real problem is this:

alind1.png

and this:

alind2.PNG

ROBO-KEY by Togimaro 2018-12-14T14:29:43Z

This is a very clever game. I think it would work marvelously with a system designed for gamepads, with face buttons and what not. Still, it has clever design and a system that takes some figuring out, but is very rewarding to learn. A+!

He-Who-Is-Beyond-The-Sun by Joror 2018-12-21T17:24:59Z

This is a very intriguing game. It could use a tutorial of sorts, or at least some tooltips, and the description of some cards seem a bit incomplete. But with a bit of art this game would be very awesome on top of being cool to play.

Temple-based Sacrifice by Aurel300 2018-12-21T16:30:38Z

This is very incredible, a rather polished turn based strategy. The UI is a bit hard to read and figure, but overall the game is top notch quality!

Coloremix by HuvaaKoodia 2018-12-26T22:51:53Z

I very much like the idea of color combining as a mechanic (except for the fact that it renders accessibility almost impossible), and the design is simple and effective. It's really admirable.

That said, the "sacrifice" theme is pretty loose in this game. :P

I still like it very much. The fact that combinations with pigment (CMYK) rather than light (RGB) are tricky adds to the puzzle component, and the only big complaint I have is the lack of a "retry" button so I can skip combining everything until the mixture is unstable beyond repair if I know I lost it already.

Coloremix by HuvaaKoodia 2018-12-26T23:26:53Z

@huvaakoodia Oh, that's silly of me. The "mouse for everything" instruction got me misled. :P

Not really criticism, but I think the secondary mixes could be brighter. The orange looks salmon and green is a tad too light... I think it'd look better if the colors had more saturation.

FTD : Fixin' to Die by nuclearfriend 2018-12-14T15:58:27Z

This is really amazing. The graphics are just as graphic (ha) as they need to be, the whole game has a morbid humor that also gives away the tension of the theme, the mechanics come up at a good pace, and overall it really feels good to play. This is definitely the best game I've played so far in this jam!

Castle Defense by tgiant 2018-12-27T21:35:29Z

Good job on the graphics, there, they look simply neat. :)

The only concerns I have is that the attack of the towers is not very clear (as in, when they will attack or where) and not being able to see the enemy's health at all makes it hard to estimate if you'll need more towers or not.

The game is rather easy as it is, and while I thought it could use a way to remove towers, I think it'd be even easier if they could be removed. :P

Nice job!

Forgotten Heritage by ded 2018-12-26T23:58:07Z

Well, that certainly was unexpected XD

I'm not sure if there's a way to "win" this game. I did have fun when I found out what the right mouse button was supposed to do, though ;P

Organic Harvest by shujal 2018-12-26T23:24:07Z

Took me a while to figure out I should incinerate the ones that I left incomplete, but I admit I didn't read the instructions very clearly, so that's on me :P

The vessel connecting minigame was, honestly, awful to control. Everything else was a morbidly fun resource managing game with a dark sense of humor.

Useful Corpses by ryjcio 2018-12-26T23:34:17Z

Some of the levels demand a very precise way of placing the corpses that could benefit from some "corpse moving" mechanic.

This seems to be a very popular interpretation of the theme (my very first idea, in fact, had a similar mechanic).

Destructor 32 GMS by Erik Brunnstrom 2018-12-27T22:33:11Z

I really, really like the feel of this game. I like games that simulate very specific interfaces and make the player decipher data gathered through these technical interfaces. I do like the somber tone that the theme was given in this game, and how the tension builds accordingly.

Only one thing is missing from it, and it'd be a better UI (the game gets locked when you lose, so I had to close and open it again) and also some way to cancel the triangulation when I can't find the target signal at all after connecting with the relay. I end up with overlapping circles that I wish I could erase or never had plotted. :P

I still haven't suceeded in the mission, but this game sure makes me want to get it right.

The Cave God by pranjalbisht 2018-12-21T15:24:38Z

This was really good, I just wish it had more items and stuff to try around. The light orb was a good touch to help the player going further (that is, if you don't end up losing them :P) and I was actually amused that the goat did not go as well as I intended.

The graphics are also great and atmospheric, very good work!

Slimeling by Diego Manarim 2018-12-17T00:25:07Z

I do like the idea of being a slime and having to shed off slime pieces to progress...

But the movement of this game doesn't quite work, and I think sticking to walls automatically is part of why. And I didn't quite feel that shedding off slime was much of a tradeoff to what I had to do.

It's a really good idea that could use some polish and go places.

Harvest Defense by BrazMogu 2018-12-05T19:15:12Z

@ynneblack You're absolutely right! Unfortunately, balancing was left to the late stage of development, and since I didn't have the whole monday free for that, balancing on the tower powers and the critter waves was not really done. I just stuck with my initial loosely defined assumptions.

Still, letting the player take some hits before the towers get competent or they can generate some decent resources was intentional. The intention was showing that if the bugs reach your seed, that's bad. :P

And yes, the lack of a menu or game over overlay was another oversight. It really wouldn't be that hard, I just put way too much focus on the core gameplay and left that for the end (and then never did it)

Harvest Defense by BrazMogu 2018-12-26T23:03:27Z

@huvaakoodia I very much appreciate the in-depth commentary. Here are a few responses...

The game was poorly balanced and polished, yes. The idea took me a night of sleep to finally come, and I missed most of monday due to work, so I did it all in around 48 hours. I left polish and even basic interface (like a main menu) for later. This is not a defense, just maybe a statement of self-awareness, I suppose :P

My thought of "sacrifice" is that selling a grown tower means resources, but also means having to rely on weaker towers for a while, which can be devastating. Of course, as you've shown there are strategies that minimize the impact of the sacrifice. My personal one while play-testing was to sell two shrooms and replace them with 3 new ones until the base was surrounded and then start to work on the Shriekers.

Glad you had fun, and also glad to see a screenshot of a game I made posted by someone else. That's really satisfying. :)

Pyres by flynn 2018-12-26T23:49:30Z

I like the tactics aspect, and also that deciding the route to getting to the city is quite important (going straight through rivers and cliffs is literally a bad idea XD)

The game itself is pretty boring, though... the battle is basically a matter of defending, waiting and then switching to heavy attack if you're impatient. I think it could work better if the battles were done in big sweeps(like tens of seconds of battle at once) and the player had to decide a strategy while the enemy could do the same (and so the game would have more of a rock-paper-scissor scheme of tactics).

Boonioo by Blix 2018-12-17T00:40:46Z

This game is really cute and I like in general that I can breed creatures, and the design of the creatures is very nice, too... I'm just not sure if it really should have no danger at all or if my game just bugged :P Being so, I didn't really feel I had to use my creatures...

The controls also are a bit hard to use, when you have 5 creatures around you it gets hard to herd them around and even click them.

Limbs Quest VII by BlueCalx 2018-12-22T11:00:49Z

Unlike most entries with a similar principal, this one at least is humorous instead of tragic.

The gameplay, though, is pretty hard to get past. The physics could be better, the enemies got me locked in a state of bouncing and hurting multiple times until I die, and the jump button doesn't respond very well.

The Missing Piece by comenoha 2018-12-21T15:47:54Z

Very nice, I haven't played all the levels but I like these mechanics of copying and sacrificing. I did consider making a game like this, too. I especially like the idea of creating a new self and having it jump right away as a mechanic.

One minor specific nitpick is that some levels could've been better tailored. Level 2, for example, could have the pencils placed so the player would fall exactly on the next one if pressing right all the way to the end. I think it'd feel better, but it's not a big deal.

Be The Bridge by Codesity 2018-12-04T14:30:13Z

That's quite a good idea and I only have myself to blame for not realizing I could drag/drop the pieces :P I also found interesting that if you click on your loose parts, the other loose parts become intangible (I died because of that). The movement is a bit clunky (especially in the beginning, while you're still just a box), but I do like the concept.

Vegefrice by andremariano 2018-12-10T15:17:39Z

A few less than good poins, first - The mechanics are hard to get, even with the tutorial up there. Admittedly, it took me longer than I'd like to admit to figure that I needed to jump on things to activate them, but the illustration could be clearer. - The time is really tight for the mechanics. - Carrying and placing the pieces could be polished. It's sometimes impossible to place a piece correctly because it's supposed to go too low for the character to reach, and sometimes the piece gets stuck too high to grab it again. Also, I suppose the rotation of the piece should not change when the character turns.

All that aside, this is really marvelous. I love the way the graphics gel together, the concept and the mechanics are fun and the puzzle was marvelous, too. I really felt that my second playthrough was a lot more efficient than my first, and maybe if I had a few more seconds in the second level I'd make it. :P

Congrats on this game, I loved it!

Colossus by PlagueOfMinds 2018-12-21T15:35:01Z

Good for a first entry. Congrats on finishing a game! (Although I'll say: tackling a new technology for a jam is a bad idea; I know it by experience)

I like the graphics over all and the animation. The idea is good. The gameplay lacks "juice", though, the jump is very floaty and there could be some feedback for the player to know they have an extra jump.

It could also feature some indicator of the colossal's health.

Congrats again. Despite the flaws, it was fun to figure out a way around the creature's attacks.
