LD42 — Running out of space

Snakescape by krasse 2018-08-14T21:47:18Z

I enjoyed this game. It was challenging enough to be interesting and easy enough to feel successful. The music is pleasant without being distracting. The sound effect when the snake eats an egg is clipping, though; the signal is too loud for my speakers, so it sounds distorted. Congratulations on a game that feels complete!

Snakescape by krasse 2018-08-14T22:32:48Z

@krasse The sound when I first roll over an egg is clipping. I don't know how else to describe it.

Hoard by gelisam 2018-08-16T02:21:25Z

I was ready to give 5 stars for the art! The story is sadly relatable. I appreciate the level of control the player has to fit things in. I'm not a careful reader, so I was wishing for faster rotation before I found the shift key. The rabbit is an extra touch of whimsy. The game got stuck for me at the point in this screenshot. All the shoes were opaque with no red overlaps. I don't know why I couldn't ⟨return⟩ to get the next item.hoard.jpg

BIO-EX-DEUS by Joror 2018-08-23T15:19:30Z

I'm not familiar with this kind of game or simulator, so more explicit instructions would help me a lot. For example, I figured out how to raise grasslands to something brown and then to a mountain. Was brown a desert? How do I get hills? Why do the dwarves want to live in mountains or hills despite not doing well in mountains because they are warm-blooded? To deploy "A Great...", do I need to click there and then choose something great to do? This is a very elaborate world. I heard the audio; I liked how moody but unintrusive it was.

POLYARNIK by icxon 2018-08-16T02:32:17Z

Wow! More people should have played this game already. The art is really clean (although it will be nice when you can add a kicking animation in different directions.) I like that there's a goal and an enemy; it's not just a defensive game. The squawking and splashing were just right. I was afraid to go into the water, but it didn't seem to slow me down. I would play this outside of the jam.

What's in the crates ?! by LooksLikeSomething 2018-09-04T05:48:33Z

I liked the crayon illustration style very much. The music is pleasant. I agree with the earlier poster that it kills my soul a little bit to wait for the trucks to take the longest possible route back to the warehouse. Are they paid by the hour? Don't they want to go home to their families/Netflix? It took me a hot minute to figure out what the map was; previously, I didn't understand why sometimes I could send a truck out and sometimes nothing would happen. For most of the game, I feel I don't have any control over what's going on. The boxes keep coming in. The trucks seem to be paid by the mile. I can't move larger quantities than ten. It feels like I'm spending most of the game waiting for trucks to come back.

Runnink out of Space by Aurel300 2018-09-03T22:07:19Z

Okay, I'm a native English speaker, and I needed to use the walkthrough (thank you for that!) I couldn't figure out how to activate (3, 4); there was nothing to click. And without those letters, I couldn't solve (3, 5). I have a strong guess for the guy on the right in the Social Room, but I don't know where those letters are going to come from. I agree with the above comments about the backtracking and the cleverness of these puzzles. It's a little bit like the legendary interactive fiction "Counterfeit Monkey," which I needed a lot of help to solve, but went through the whole thing because it was so much fun. Five stars for your sense of humor. Thanks for letting me turn off the music. I appreciate the 8-bitty-ness of the graphics, but the text is very hard to read! I wish I could have gotten further, just to admire the weirdness of this world. I also wish I could speak another language well enough to make puzzles.

Throwing Science Out The Window! by SimplePotential 2018-08-15T22:25:53Z

Ha, the music didn't bother me, possibly because I didn't live long enough to get bored. I agree with others' frustrations with the truck controls. A weird glitch: sometimes I'd get my Mac's widget screen. Then I'd have to swipe back to get to game play. At this point, the truck would be stuck, and I'd need to hit the brake to release it. I'm playing on an old Mac OS with Firefox 61.0.2.

Le Parking by karlipoppins 2018-08-19T04:42:26Z

I really struggle with games that use forward/backward and rotate instead of the absolute directions. I'm not sure if I should blame the navigation or my inexperience with parking real cars, but I will deflect deflect deflect blame for sucking at this game. Good on you for presenting a complete compo game. Itt works, just not when I do it.

no-kill by daniel 2018-08-15T22:09:45Z

The shapes and colors are really nice to look at. The player-character's posture is tipped back a little far, but good on you for doing a complete walk cycle and other animations. For me, the field is way too big, and it takes too long to schlep around the room. I would like to be able to see the whole room at once. The tiny notifications in the lower left were distracting; they went away too fast. I gave up trying to remember any of the dogs' names. The isometric projection was nicer than a flat-on view, but could you make the motion controls relate to the angles instead of having to [a][w][a][w] my way around the room? I died twice because I couldn't figure out how to do anything but feed the dogs. By then, I was tired of my character taking his sweet time about getting from place to place. This idea and artwork deserve better locomotion! (Music was also nice.) [Please name your files with the game name. "ld42.app" is like when I'm hiring and everyone's resume is called "resume.doc."]

Break The System by firellon 2018-08-15T21:53:32Z

Mac build crashed on my old OS. Sorry I couldn't help. (May I suggest that you use the game name for your file? When I'm playing and rating a bunch of apps called MacOS_release.app, it's like when I'm hiring and everyone sends resumes titled "resume.doc.") Screen Shot 2018-08-15 at 2.50.44 PM.png

Space Box Rescue by udo 2018-09-03T09:47:50Z

I don't know @aurel300 or @deadmandomi, but I don't think we can be friends if they think this game isn't difficult. I stopped counting the number of times I played Level 4, and now I'm backing away slowly from Level 5. I like the graphics! The slidey sound is very satisfying. The music is great; not like "jamming while cleaning the apartment" great, but definitely game great. My quibble: I don't know why it's called Box Rescue when I'm the one that needs help.

Space Box Rescue by udo 2018-09-03T20:53:19Z

@udo Okay, I just did Level 5, but Level 6 looks logically impossible to me.

Ode to Resilience by Xarras 2018-08-21T16:02:34Z

Outstanding animation! The visuals are simply gorgeous. I have poor platform skills, so I couldn't get past the trap after "walls of man." I understand why repeating the voice for each of my attempts to jump through that phrase would ruin the poem. Maybe a little music would encourage me. Maybe I just lack fortitude. This is certainly one of the most beautiful games of the jam.

Bardolf's Curse by mrjoshuamclean 2018-08-14T06:19:03Z

I found the oil! Three hundred and ten turns into the game, I still can't figure out how to deploy the you know what on you know whom, but it's ready to go. I only have nine points, one of which was from doing the same thing twice. I don't like being stuck, but to be fair, I've never gotten through an Inform game without having to find a walkthrough somewhere. The world of this game seems well thought-out and the prose is clear.

Head Space by AfroAnt 2018-08-16T06:25:59Z

I couldn't open the app after decompressing. It's likely my OS is just too old. (Side note: calling your app "Mac.app" is like when a bunch of people send me resumes all titled "resume.doc.) Sorry I can't return the play favor. The gifs and color palette are intriguing!

Space Compact by garris 2018-08-22T21:31:46Z

I really like the signposting to the stations and that they seem to recalculate when I travel. The enemy ships were very, very fast. I seem to be the only one who couldn't find cargo. I stumbled on one by accident. The interlude on docking at the cargo pickup seemed unnecessary. I also don't need the word "pew!" coming out of the ship along with the sound effect; one or the other would be fine. Or the sound effect could be a person actually saying "pew!" I did enjoy the retro feel of this game.

Where Stars Belong by NORRIMO 2018-08-21T02:52:55Z

The choice of sounds had a lot to do with creating a mysterious and engaging mood. After that, things didn't quite fulfill my hopes. The topography you've created is beautiful, but the bright daylight doesn't match the ethereal quality of the music. Perhaps toning down the palette would help. I liked the anachronism or whatever of a phonograph in the middle of this world. I liked the choice of music from the record. I liked the particle effect and sound of the cannon/star shooter. I just didn't know what any of it meant. Is there an arc? Is there any kind of story here? I understand that these are abstract thoughts, but I don't see how they connect to running out of room in memory or attention. Since the theme is not required, maybe it would have been better to simply say, "Hey, we made a pretty thing." I'm glad I took the time to explore your world.

Flesh Packer by nervous-composers 2018-08-16T00:09:55Z

Yaay! I won! You sick, feather-pluckers. I wish there had been less delay after each of the "sorry, no" messages. I was clicking everything, so it slowed things down for me. I enjoyed the illustrations. I can't imagine better music.

Summer Breakdown by pixelstuff 2018-08-21T03:29:19Z

Oof. I agree with @shell-pirate that the color palette and the art are charming, as is the fracophone anglais. I started to feel anxious myself that no one would leave my character alone. There were several times that I couldn't move; when I tried to click, Tatum would not appear. I resolved this by moving the cursor around a little bit, but the delay was frustrating.

Decal Royale by BluShine 2018-08-19T17:20:42Z

I can understand why this might come off as sarcastic, but I actually like the art in this game. If you're just one person busting out a game for the Compo, you gotta lean into what you've got; there's thought in what the stickers depict and the portrayal makes a convincing rayon out of that sow's ear. The combination bonus takes the game above other "stuff it in the shape" games that I've seen this round. I was pleasantly surprised by moving targets in the later rounds. I noticed that sometimes the stickers sink or drift before placement, but not always. Bug or feature? It did make things harder, because I like to look at something in situ before I commit. (Do not hang wall art with me if you're in a hurry.)

Decal Royale by BluShine 2018-08-20T04:23:15Z

I should also add that, while the combos are one of the most interesting parts of the game, they discourage placement. I ended up just hitting the space bar as fast as I could to see what combos came up. That went against the idea of running out of space. :grimacing:

Tetroids by CodeChomper 2018-08-14T19:23:44Z

The field is too big for my monitor. I played twice before I realized I could see the bottom by scrolling down. When my ship goes above the top border, it never comes back down. I can hear the gun when I ⟨space bar⟩, but I can't get the ship back. It takes too many bullets to take out a block. Overall, this is way more than I could do in the same amount of time, so I respect that.

Plug And Shoot by Hagge 2018-08-14T19:34:32Z

Hej, hej! I like the concept very much. I wish the turrets had bigger color labels. When things get hectic, my cords get out of order. Also, I dropped the yellow cord off the screen and couldn't recover it somehow. I must have read the instructions poorly because I didn't understand how to fix the outlets at first, but I figured it out. I also wish the bullets would actually touch the zombies; when they disappear before impact and the zombie doesn't die immediately, I worry that the bullet doesn't have enough range. I respect this game. I would play it again after you have time to polish it.

Rainforest by SimoGecko 2018-08-27T20:36:39Z

This is a very good-looking game. The audio equalization is a little odd, but I like the actual sounds. Even though I read the above comment about the numbers referring to the size of the boxes, I still wish the numbers on the packages were bigger. Otherwise, this is polished and shiny.

Sauber by gagapete 2018-08-16T06:19:11Z

I was confused about the story. What was all that debris falling from the sky and starting fires? I liked the art and animation quite a bit, but I agree with other commenters that the field is really big. It was frustrating not to be able to get to the fires before the trees were lost.

Explodasharks by Micahtron 2018-08-15T23:44:39Z

Nice save! This is impressive for the circumstances. Excellent choice of music, which, even if it isn't yours, takes time to source. Of course, sharks with bombs are automatically funny. That's just true.

Crowded Dungeon by RandyTayler 2018-08-19T03:22:42Z

Congratulations on busting out all that artwork! I'd prefer, though, that it be a little less contrasty. I appreciate the translucent background on the text, but it would be easier for me to read if you took all the whites (except the text) down to medium-light grey. I found the music overpowering and because there's no way for you to dynamically match the music with the progression of the story, it didn't add anything. It's too bad you didn't complete at least one storyline; I'm interested to know more of this world and how Findle['s cousin] learned words like garderobe. I'd also like some consistency between the narrative voice and the fantasy world; either the voice could be more medieval or the story could include some contemporary touches. I would continue to play, if there were more story!

All Ahoard by Matt Fabius 2018-08-15T06:42:56Z

The graphic elements were my favorite part. I do wish the flow of new squigynns didn't overlap the ones on the raft. I didn't understand that I'd be able to grab those without disrupting my stack. Also, I assumed I wouldn't be able to re-arrange my stack. How did you know when I wanted to grab overlapping squigynns and when to re-arrange the stack? In hindsight, that's the most impressive part to me. The music is sweet; it seems not too hard to make the loop smoother by overlapping with a crossfade, no? I really, really liked the illustration style. I may have mentioned that, but it's worth repeating.

Swirling Infestation by Coda Highland 2018-08-23T05:55:41Z

Like @flaterectomy , I skimmed the instructions and then had to refer back to figure out what that red stuff was. I'd like a little more visual contrast between the afflicted and the townspeople who are just in my way. I liked the music and the color palette, and everything else seemed to be working in the Web version. I never got around to trying teleport. Kudos for bringing some gender equity to the player character.

SHIP-A-TRON by Daniel Conway 2018-09-01T05:09:22Z

Oooh, I was not good at this game. The controls are a little touchy; I like that WASD is related to the direction and NOT forward-backward-clockwise-counterclock, but I had trouble with moving just a bit to line up with a block. Being as unskilled as I am, I would also prefer a top-down or isometric view. Later blocks impeded my view. And/or maybe you could add a sound effect when I've properly got a block in hand; then I might keep going without being able to see. Congratulations on finishing a fully functional game!

Crucifix and Tentacle by Cedric Fey 2018-08-14T04:03:07Z

The graphics and audio are awesome, but I seem to be unable to make a difference in how fast I die. Is that me or the game? I never got any better because I couldn't see that any of the running or stabbing I was doing were having any effect. It looks cool, but playing was maybe a little too Cthulhu.

Dear Leader's Diet Plan by Historymaker118 2018-08-16T03:39:42Z

The music is brilliant. The premise is bizarre, which is what attracted me to this game. Quibble: the triumph screen goes away a little too quickly.

Dirty Duty by grahhhhhhhhh 2018-08-15T00:37:51Z

I actually liked how stupid the premise is. How long does the poop last? I'm pretty sure I pooped in the plant twice, but I only got caught the second time. Maybe the second time was right before the thing I intentionally avoided the first time. I'll say that, lovely voice acting aside, the leaving and coming home interludes really killed the pace for me. That's the main reason I don't want to play again to see if I can sort out the houseplant thing. It feels like 30% of game play waiting for the owner to get out of the room. I would also appreciate more than two bars of music. Solid work on putting all the elements together. It's gross, but I still think it's funny, just gotz to be faster.

NOOR by PNghasemi 2018-08-15T06:15:17Z

I liked the music! It's unusual for music so simple not to become annoying, and this was great. I found the navigation difficult because I didn't understand how I could aim the light with the mouse. I've never seen the abbreviation LMB before. I also had trouble because I kept shooting lights that were beyond the perimeter of the light I was in. I learned to back up so that the new light would overlap. Should I have been clicking on the junk that I found? I think the instructions said something about the mouse being really important, but I was so overwhelmed with the navigation that I didn't remember. Maybe I'm dumb, but dumb people like games, too.

Personal Space by ProdigalSon 2018-08-21T22:03:33Z

I died immediately three times. Then I stopped to think about the instructions I had just read. The highlighting of smashable squares is a good touch. I like the sound effect when I bop the slimes to stun them. I wish I had more than a single life to work with. Graphics look good, and the game works smoothly. I started to get a little worked up because I really wanted to win!

CRUSHED - Rage Inducing Platformer by Ajay.2002 2018-08-15T06:49:12Z

I got an error when I tried to extract the rar, so I didn't rate. May I suggest that you name your download archive/file something specific? Calling it Ludum Dare.rar during the play+rate period is like when I'm hiring and a bunch of different people send me files called "resume.doc."

Take care of her by KiiroHanabi 2018-08-26T02:32:16Z

Hey, @kiirohanabi and @demn, you make a great team! This was a charming story elevated by the music and stylish graphics. Sometimes the main text was a bit hard for me to read (because I'm old), but I liked the visuals. I'm glad there was a recap at the end of the effect of my choices. May I suggest that instead of pinching the guitar strings, that Eva pluck the strings instead? (Text game people have to stick together!)

Detonation Dice by George Lancaster 2018-08-22T21:21:14Z

Oof! This game went by fast! Things got a lot better after I read the directions about toggling between roll and push. I was thinking limiting the cube faces to two or three designs would help me predict the rolling better, but push/roll helped. The music definitely motivates me (raises my anxiety), but did you create this recording or borrow it from some site like Kevin Macleod's freebie music? I'll revise my audio rating if it's an original recording of the Mountain King.

Chinese astronaut by Enot487 2018-08-14T21:57:35Z

You should note in your links that this is a browser-based game so people know they don't have to download anything! Meanwhile, I like the reference to Wan Hu. I like the graphics, although that costume is for peasants, very inappropriate for an official like Wan Hu. Also, his top should fold left-side over right-side. The way it's drawn in the game is how people are dressed for burial. My biggest actual complaint is that the game is a little too simple; although I started crashing into rockets, I didn't feel engaged enough to worry. Part of the problem is that the screen is too big for my monitor; I can't see the top and the bottom together. Once in a while, there's a line across the sky, possibly where your background repeats. Overall, a solid effort! I'm glad I checked it out.

Cybermind by GrizzledBoor 2018-08-21T03:51:48Z

I second (or fourth) the longing for continuous or at least faster movement. I would have sacrificed a lot of the maze for some kind of stakes: robots that move, if not chase, or some kind of urgency to finish. The premise that the player character misheard the circumstance undermines any motivation. If no one is trying to kill this robot, why keep running? When creators don't play by their own rules, nothing means anything.

Croatan by Colestia 2018-08-16T01:35:21Z

I wish the heads of the interactable beings were a different color from the bottle caps (and the string lights). It was hard to read the room, so to speak. I liked the immersive camera and the melancholy music you chose.

TaskMaster 2000 by chelC 2018-08-14T17:12:40Z

The premise and graphic design are great! Mugsy and the splash page set the tone with a retro 90s wink. The emails are comic, but the outrageousness of the first ones I got confused me about what world I'm in. Ex: I didn't realize that I should be charging realistic rates for my work, and I accepted a job for $2/hour. Things picked up when I realized that I could preview all five mails before placing any of them. I wish I understood the overall scoring better. It's a little ironic to have a game about trying to squeeze stuff into a schedule and having all the time in the world to decide. I was amused and alarmed by my relationship with Jerry.

Bunny Bazooka by MZA 2018-08-21T06:28:14Z

I love the weirdness of the textile textures; I wish there were some of that in the characters, but I can see that scale makes that challenging. With all the originality going on, I appreciate that I could continue playing at the level I died at. I liked the snare drum and the death gasp, but I never figured out what the tinkle-tinkle-tink noise meant. I'm on board the Yay, Tutorial train. I found the recoil/camera shake way too much. The sound and the idea of shake are solid and satisfying, but the degree of shake made me slightly queasy. I really liked how unlike other games this way. Shine on, you crazy diamond!

The Hero's incredible Chronicles by Gaming Night 2018-08-23T15:33:51Z

Very nice colors and a good-looking walk cycle. I liked the choice of music and font. Submitting something is better than not trying. I look forward to what you can do with more time.

Space Hauler by Keppu 2018-08-14T22:30:24Z

I liked this much better after I figured out all the controls. I don't think the mouseover info reveal was really necessary; players can learn to identify a small set of shapes. It's quite complicated to manage the astronaut and also the truck. It might be overly ambitious to include both. There's so much going on with steering the truck and only being able to open/close the hatch from inside the truck, and the multiple mouse functions that I only understood the game after playing it several time. I rather like the pace, though. It would be terrible to if things moved faster. The audio is very suitable.

Why did you remove the link from this page? I had to go to your Twitter feed to find it (but I'm glad I did.)

Quadrata Minima by mccarlp 2018-08-22T21:01:59Z

I liked this! It got a lot better when I actually dug out my 3-button mouse to play. I liked the audio, both the non-intrusive tick and the reaction effects. It seems the block I'm placing is about 103% scale to the playing field, which was a little confusing. I thought about asking for the balls to collapse after a match, but I see that the new blocks need those little spaces; they aren't continuous blocks. I thought this was going to be very simple and was pleasantly surprised.

Darkest Shade Of Night by Bartosz 2018-08-16T03:49:54Z

Wait-- Is the web version improved since the jam deadline?

Darkest Shade Of Night by Bartosz 2018-08-16T07:23:26Z

@sandra-jasionowska This comment from "a day ago" would be from Tuesday (PDT) So bugfixing is allowed? This is my first LD, so I'm unfamiliar with what counts as a major fix or a minor one. Screen Shot 2018-08-16 at 12.17.38 AM.png

Too Many Harlots by Team Infernus 2018-08-19T03:36:36Z

Unfortunately, this was hard to read: the text is a bit small and didn’t contrast well with the background. I was all set for some smut, but there’s not enough story here to get my engines going. I like a little buildup, a little foreplay, a little romance. When the sex is reduced to statistics, the result feels more like gonzo than erotica. Why hire new girls if there are too many already? While it doesn’t change the game, the backstory didn’t make sense. I agree with other commenters that just matching proclivities wasn’t compelling me to play. Maybe icons would help, so I don’t have to keep clicking back and forth to remember those numbers. I appreciate the artwork that you were able to include; hand-drawn is better than 8-bit pixels would have been.

Zero Star by CristiHKJ 2018-08-21T18:36:45Z

I wasn't able to unzip the Mac download. Every unzipping resulted in either another .zip file or a .cpgz. Was it just me? Sorry to miss out on your game.

Cherrytales - Cherryboy and Briar Princess by Beebo Studios 2018-08-19T03:15:55Z

Really attractive graphics: the game looks like more than 72 hours to me. I enjoyed the jazzy music. I wish I could move continuously instead of one square at a time. If the character were always running and clicking/tapping could guide direction and attacks, I would play this game on my phone while waiting for public transit. That's when I spend the most time playing games. I liked being able to direct the blast of the mushrooms. Very nice!

Defrag by mediyaz 2018-08-15T21:47:03Z

Wow. The graphics looks super slick, although when I got blasted out into Nothingbutmotiontrails Land, I was a little overwhelmed. My personal preference would be for the WASD to control my motion directly. It was counterintuitive for me to use W for forward when I actually wanted to go south/down. I like @shujal's suggestion of an overview or map, which I supposed is not in keeping with the defrag theme. I scored 5 on theme for being on point without being literal about the walls closing in or whatever.

Castle Defenders by Bela Bohlender 2018-08-15T07:55:17Z

I like the voxel look. The UI confused me. Why are the defenders not in order of expense? Do they have different skills? Should I be concerned about when to use the 5 coin guy and when to use the 6 coin guy? Chickens are amusing. I don't know what the flags represent because they don't move with my territory. I played the game five times before discovering that I could move the board. That's fancy, but maybe not necessary if you move the defender shopping chart out of the way. I agree with other comments that the game is too hard. After I made a couple of high scores, I lost the knack for what I was doing and kept dying. Could you please make the enemy a different color from the player's troops?

Castle Defenders by Bela Bohlender 2018-08-15T18:39:32Z

@bela-bohlender I certainly understand that. We had a lot of things on our list from the beginning. At least a couple of important things are missing in the version we submitted. Congratulations on your accomplishment!

XORN: The Fallen God by ThibaultAr 2018-08-31T00:39:28Z

This game is hot! It took me several tries and re-reading the directions to understand what the crystals were, but then I kept playing and playing because it was fun. The graphics are great. The music keeps the tension high. (I found it a little easier to concentrate when the loop ran out!) I might suggest simplifying the crystals. Instead of a choice, the crystal could just be what it is. I never ran out of coins, so the choice between 5 cubes or 7 cubes just meant I lost a second or two thinking about it. I'm going to keep playing, even after I give you bunches of stars.

XORN: The Fallen God by ThibaultAr 2018-08-31T08:29:15Z

@thibaultar I think the cost of the cards is okay. I played several more times, paying more attention to the result of the cards. I actually did run out of coins several times. A little pause to choose the card might be a good idea. Ooh, I just went back to play some more. Sometimes, in the melee, I lose the cursor among the sparks and lighting. I used the accessibility preferences on my Mac to make the cursor bigger, which was helpful.

XORN: The Fallen God by ThibaultAr 2018-09-01T04:47:28Z

@thibaultar I finally made it to Wave 4 this evening! I have returned to play Xorn more than any other game. (Camp Snuggle by @scott-steffes was really good, too.)

Chef Frank's Franks by GhostGoatsGames 2018-08-15T06:23:50Z

I didn't understand that I had to pick up the completed hot dog to [1][2][3] serve it to the customer. Once I got that down, I made nine whole dollars. Do you need separate buttons for each function? For example, what if the space button uses whatever I'm holding or dumps it when I'm standing next to a trash bin or next to the trailer? It would help my poor brain if I didn't have to think about spacebar, x, and y. I liked that the graphics and audio reminded me of games I played as a child, back in the 20th century.

Unfamiliar by Kovakomes 2018-08-16T04:32:38Z

This is gorgeous. I caught a different typo than the one about the stocking: "One of the patron's liked George's music." Re: the entree options at the beginning. I chose turkey because I think it takes the longest (having never cooked any big meat), and then I realized that ham was on the shopping list from yesterday. Oops. Never mind the tenuous connection to the theme; you were inspired to make something meaningful, and you executed it beautifully. I'd like to see what else your team makes.

Unfamiliar by Kovakomes 2018-08-16T06:20:37Z

Oh, but I really didn't like that font. It was hard to read. I don't feel mean in saying that because everything else was so lovely.

Ultimate Furniture Stacker X-Treme by Norris Eldridge 2018-08-20T04:06:31Z

I'm not sure what I just played. I got that the mouse controls the player's direction. Frankly, that was a lot easier for me than games that use [w][s] for forward/back and [a][d] for rotating. I was distracted by the announcer calling "Eviction!" because it didn't seem to have any consequence. I wasn't, apparently, strong enough to actually move any furniture, which is not the kind of verisimilitude I look for in a game. The motion and bouncing of the player character were cute. I liked the music and the color palette. I especially appreciate the 3d view instead of top-down. I think I'm over top-down make-it-fit games.

Ultimate Furniture Stacker X-Treme by Norris Eldridge 2018-08-20T05:00:59Z

@norris-eldridge Now that you mention clicking and dragging, that rings a bell. I barely skimmed the instructions and just plowed ahead because of my Y chromosome. I'll play it again! EDIT: Oddly, now the controls feels wilder to me. I have more trouble navigating with furniture in my grasp than when I thought I was supposed to push things. That might not be helpful feedback. You definitely achieved "silly."

Deep Down by Nyunesu 2018-08-15T08:09:31Z

I guess I'm the only one who got stuck before the theme revealed itself. In the second level, I couldn't move fast enough to dodge the blocks that kept bouncing me up. I was there for about two minutes. Then I gave up. I like the style and especially the color palette of the visuals. The music was appropriate. I thought the bouncing blocks that defeated me were a cool usage.

No Space In My Stomach by Roman Petrov 2018-08-21T22:20:05Z

I love the graphic style! The color palette is also unusual, in a good way. I liked the pace of the game. (Maybe I'm slow.) At the second level, I was not allowed to use the WC a second time, so I couldn't solve the puzzle. I even fell out of the screen, which was slightly alarming. (I was at the WC door, going back and forth.) I was not in love with the music. With such strong visuals, I wanted the audio to be equally stylish. (The denial sound effect made me laugh.) Congratulations!

The Curse by jiukka 2018-08-21T18:48:01Z

I use a QWERTY keyboard, but I didn't mind [Q] and [D]; it was comfortable for me. I like the character design and the forest very much. The music adds a spooky atmosphere. (The fire might be a little bit too loud compared to the music.) A very frustrating bug for me: the game kept crashing me back to RESTART. I could never figure out what was triggering my death.

The Curse by jiukka 2018-08-21T21:53:09Z

@lu7cie Ah, okay. I played again, paying more attention to the violet haze. I made it all the way to victory! The haze is a more artistic way of expressing what would normally be a status bar. Could you add some bigger indicator when the old man heals me: a noise or a flash or animation from the old man? It would be nice if he tried a little harder to help by running around with me. Maybe he needs to meditate by the fire or has no legs.

The Lonely Moon by DanCan 2018-08-21T06:05:04Z

I'm terrible at this game. Every laser satellite crashed immediately. I had better luck with the cube sats, but I realized that I won't live long enough in real life to build an ark at cube sat rates. I accept that I can't change the trajectory of a satellite after a certain period of time, but I don't understand it. The notifications were so small and fast that I didn't bother trying to read them. I'm sure there's some sophisticated math going on with the trajectory calculations. Other people seemed to figure this game out, so I'm worried that it's just me.

Camp Snuggle by Scott Steffes 2018-08-14T04:32:34Z

Here's my quibble: it's hard on my tendons to click-hold and rotate my mouse wheel after 72 hours of clickety-clicking on my own stuff. Oh, and I could do with more of an on-the-nose lullaby type music. I loved everything else about this game and gave it seven 5-star ratings.

Fire maze by VideoRuckus 2018-08-15T20:47:19Z

Ah, yes, when you enter the link, you should select the icon for Windows instead of source code. Unfortunately, I have a Mac, so won't be able to play.

Lest mynyt vacation by Akaneiro 2018-08-16T03:31:58Z

The art is on fleek. The music made me anxious. Because I was using a trackpad, it felt like a long walk home to get to the right side of the suitcase. When I tried to rotate things, my browser would scroll down. (Maybe spacebar is not the answer here.) It's a very smooth and complete game.

Adventures of Spacepup! by FlyingKiwi 2018-08-21T06:49:01Z

Sure, sounds would be nice, but ya do whatcha can in LD Jam. The graphics are very attractive, and I liked the gameplay. I didn't have a problem with laggy controls-- I thought inertia was to blame. I agree that some gravitational pull on the pup would be nice. I also enjoyed the bathtub. (I didn't live long enough to see a washing machine.) Congratulations!

Sakaven Simimulator by T8kk 2018-08-23T06:34:15Z

I also couldn't figure out how to win the YOU ARE A WINRAR level. It was morbidly fun to watch limbs go flying in a big slaughter. I didn't realize that taking over a nest would make it spawn my guys. I'd like more differentiation between the grey bandana ratpeople and the blue bandanas. Usually, repetitive music doesn't bother me, but this time it left me wanting something else. Of course, I agree with all the people who already said that the character design and animation are terrific.

Crowdy Planet by arche-san 2018-08-23T06:15:47Z

The pretty colors and soothing audio design sucked me in. Then I realized I was enforcing some kind of eugenics master plan and got creeped out. I was a little confused that my progress toward the goal of having a large population was subject to natural setbacks, but I guess game play doesn't have to be linear. It certainly was frustrating to have a chunk of my colony die off from natural causes. Sometimes I wasn't sure if a crowdie had a defective smile or was just low-res zoomed out. I didn't take chances; I culled ruthlessly.

Anxiety by TontonPizza 2018-09-06T16:43:25Z

The first time I played (after the rating period ended), I had my sound turned down and I walked almost directly to the library. I thought it was a simple walk as night was coming on with an inner monologue. Now that I have read some comments and played again, I appreciate the narrowing field of view and the audio as a function of encountering people or cats. I am actually allergic to cats, but I understand that other people do not get anxious around them. Congratulations!

Space Dog Escape by yayapipi 2018-08-31T00:56:31Z

This game was easy to understand (thanks for the tip about escaping through the red gate). It's an unusual set up. I liked when physics became important to getting around the monster. Unfortunately, it felt frenetic to me. Sometimes it's more button mashing than skill. (I know this because I'm terrible at keyboard games, but I did okay on this one.)

Dementia by Kjetil 2018-08-15T23:56:54Z

I don't know what to do with the files I unzipped from the MacOS download. It looks like a bunch of iOS stuff. I have a Mac laptop and an Android phone. Your screenshots are beautiful and really made me want to play the game.

OPEN-ME.ZIP by Adam Harms 2018-08-20T04:51:13Z

I was surprised at how moving the ending was! You used color and font much more effectively in Twine than we were able to figure out; congratulations on that, too. As others have mentioned, the music is first-rate: five stars. Regrettably, not being able to revisit [spoiler] with the proper [spoiler] seems a bit artificial, though necessary to keep the story going, and I do wish it had been longer; you've established a world worth exploring.

Oh No ! More Food : A Vegan Story by Maksime 2018-08-23T00:47:42Z

Noooooooooooo!! I accidentally ate a puppy!! :dog2: :hotdog: This game is a brilliant accomplishment, but if you need me to tell you that, then that might be a longer conversation. The concept is unusual. The backstory is kooky. The execution is smoove. Quibble: I would like the movement of the barrier thing to be a little smoother/more accurate. That would help compensate for my lack of skill.

Countdown by Elnu 2018-08-14T02:10:48Z

Wow. This feels exceptionally polished. It's the best embodiment of the theme I've played so far (only four games, but I don't see how anyone could top this.). High marks for innovation because I had to think hard about a similar game. I guess it's like those "avoid the snake" games. The hexes and the countdown make this game stand out, though. My quibble is that it wouldn't hold my interest for very much longer than I could survive. I agree with other commenters that the movement control seems a little sticky, but I thought that was my own incompetence. I'll say "polished" again because that was the most impressive quality for me.

Sinking by Bungalow 2018-08-21T18:32:19Z

I second what @digital-bacon mentioned about where it's safe to land. The tutorial was my favorite part of this game because it gave me a real sense of what the game would be like. I wish the opening play scene had been a gentler ramp-up to a challenge; I have poor platform skills and need more time to figure out the quirks of the motion as well as getting used to the command keys. I assumed you were not working with a QWERTY layout because [w], [c], and [shift] are not very intuitive to my habits. (I spend a lot more keyboard time at asdf and jkl; than the gamer default wasd.) For a one-person production, you did a lot more than I could do, but I encourage you to look for free sounds. Whether you use sound as feedback or just a little background loop, it makes the experience more engaging. (If you tried to implement sound and couldn't get the code to work, then we're in the same club. We should make t-shirts.)

Trial by Fire by CorgiRam 2018-08-14T03:51:51Z

Strong work! Even this 1.0 version feels complete, which is a big deal. Yeah, the music is repetitive, but that's appropriate for a game like this. I agree that facing the way I'm walking would have streamlined control over the player, even though I sometimes fought as I was retreating. I felt a bit like I was rubbing my tummy while patting my head. I could use more water, but maybe that's just me; I played ten times and only grabbed one flask (and died immediately after deploying it.) The fractures in the player's armor are a nice extra visual. I still don't know what the hearts on the side are for. I liked it!

Don´t Hit The Ducks! by Joloujed 2018-08-21T06:56:10Z

I didn't rate because I played the WebGL game; let me know if I'm doing it wrong. This game was a lot more fun than it should have been. Shooting at nothing doesn't sound like anything, but the nice graphics and not-annoying music made this a very pleasant, vegetarian experience (until I accidentally killed a living cgi creature. Congratulations! ¡Muy bueno!

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-09-04T05:15:19Z

I would totally play this if I had a Windows machine. :sob:

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-09-04T05:49:44Z

@atom0520 No, I'm not going to watch what I can't have. That's a tease!

Steerbear by Skelpdar 2018-08-14T01:49:11Z

This was too hard, but I really *wanted* to be good at it. I kept playing even after I figured out that I'd never make any progress. Graphics are superior. The player as a bear is random + cute = winner. If you had more than a weekend to work on it, I'd like to see a clearer indication of where the toolkits instantiate. Part of my mobility snag was that I instinctively wanted to use Z to jump, but I can see why you reserved Z for all the other things it does.

The Fountain At The City's End by Benn Ends 2018-08-15T20:59:10Z

I'm running Firefox on a Mac, and it ran fine. (No shade, just my experience.) I got frustrated that there were so many screens of text before I had any agency. After a brief moment of agency, then it seemed my only options were to continue or quit. I missed the part where the safeword was established, so it seemed not an actual safeword but a regular communication to quit. (That's ethics, not a problem with game play.) I appreciate that you created an elaborate world and moved forward with intention.

Mindlapse by Vulture_42 2018-08-16T00:53:33Z

It took me a little time to understand that I have to stand in a collapsing room to save it. I thought it would kill me. I was also slow to pick up the bricks. I'm kinda game-dumb. I liked the art style, although I don't know why the player character was hunched over with her arms out. I like the music and audio effects. Everything seems to work the way it should, which is not true of many game jam games. Congratulations!

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-14T06:26:22Z

@chelC There's only space for folks who take care of themselves and others  Thanks for playing.

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-14T07:07:55Z

@darkguardsman -- I don't disagree about a visual element.

@seannewman22 -- Thanks for being so specific! That's constructive. Re: the slow pacing-- I thought I was just reading faster because I played through so many times to check the timing, so I didn't speed it up. Sorry!

@mahalis -- ¡Gracias! That's what we were going for, so it's gratifying to hear that that's what struck you.

I've played two of y'all's games and will hit the other two tomorrow morning! Congratulations!

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-14T19:07:30Z

@darkguardsman -- Mac build of Space is Running Out of Space crashed on opening for me. @mahalis -- Sadly, my computer is too old to run OSX10.12 @dimlight -- Do I need to be able to run wine on my Mac to play your game? After I disable the security pref to open an non-App Store app, my dock twitches like a new app is opening, but Foggy Raft never appears.

Sorry not to be able to play and rate your games :frowning2:

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-14T19:49:48Z

There's been some feedback that the first screen goes away too quickly. The idea is that it's a dream interrupted. That might be clearer I'd been able to implement an alarm sound in the second screen. The code I copied from someone's Medium article gave me error messages.

The page that fades in (too slowly for some) is meant to represent waking up. I wanted to make the background fade from black to white over that span without having to click to a new page.

Another player didn't like that some pages only advance to the next page without options. I was trying to break up a really long scene. I'm wordy. ⟨shrug emoticon⟩ (WrenCorsair's writing is more economical.)

Re: the "escape" ending-- would you like a readout of the points you need to score at the bottom of each page? At the bottom of pages where your score changes? No score?

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-15T01:26:48Z

@dimlight -- yes, probably my OS is too old. Sorry for being obsolete. :slight_frown:

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-15T02:21:15Z

@grahhhhhhhh ¡Muchas gracias! We only have three endings, so you got the full experience.

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-15T07:36:07Z

@awix Because you mentioned the music and graphics of our game, I am not sure that you actually played it.

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-15T18:33:22Z

@cheetahcat, @comenoha, @zlou_kote -- Apologies that I won't be able to play your games during the rating period. I only have a Mac, and WrenCorsair has had to get back to his real job. Thank you for your comments; I'm sorry to leave the debt unpaid.

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-15T18:54:21Z

@nam-nguyen Yes, the characters in our game keep running out of space. Thanks for playing; I wouldn't have found your game otherwise, and it's terrific! I recommend it.

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-16T06:28:41Z

@afroant Yeah, I may have set the bar too high, but on the other hand, shouldn't there be some standards for who gets to represent humankind on the galactic stage?

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-16T18:38:25Z

@enot487 We had a lot of material that didn't make it into the story because we were trying to learn Twine, mostly stupid references to running out of space or things that sound like "space." Thanks for playing!

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-17T02:11:47Z

@codechomper Thanks for your consideration! You can't please all of the people all of the time. I know some weirdos who don't like chocolate.

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-17T18:42:50Z

@coffeecup-winner I guess it's a good thing we ran out of time and didn't get to include the scene at the pet adoption where Max can afford the adoption fees but not the vet bill, and the pet rescue is running out of spays. Thanks for your kind words!

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-20T04:59:09Z

@saoi-games Thanks for commenting. Are you sure you're on the right page? I scrolled through the 10 minute video from your link at 1 minute intervals, and I didn't see Summer's Lease. Admittedly, it streams poorly because there's so much reading and the auto-forwarding is timed for silent reading.

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-20T05:44:03Z

@saoi-games Oh, that was ten HOURS, and I was checking every HOUR. Good golly, Ms Molly, you are for serious about this! Thanks for your dedication.

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-27T18:49:11Z

@rahim-pxr Did you actually play our game? Your link is broken.

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-09-01T05:00:05Z

So, if I have tallied correctly, @nam-nguyen and @blinkenlights don't think we connected to the theme. @coffeecup-winner, @saoi-games and @g12345 think we hit it too many times, and @Demn, @afroant, @grahhhhhhhhh and maybe @saoi-games's friend who sat in on her stream like the deployment. Thus-- Not enough: 2. Too much: 3. Just right: 3 (or 4). Giving everyone equally weight, I guess we're doing okay. Personally, I wanted to bring in more and farther-fetched puns on the theme, but those got sacrificed on the Altar of Time.

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-09-03T09:29:09Z

@udo I hope your cell phone isn't a real-life priority for a day at the beach with friends.

The Gentle Giant by Red Pill 2018-08-21T15:48:03Z

The animation is schweeeeet! The music is good as music, but I could have done with some olden time instrumentation. Still, it's two cuts above repetitive placeholder music. Some smashing noises or the giant saying "oops! sorry!" for the post-jam version, yeah? I also gave high marks for innovation; I haven't seen a game with this story or mechanic before.

The Gentle Giant by Red Pill 2018-08-31T00:11:02Z

Oh, no! So much screaming in the post-jam version! I now understand what the reputation bar is, but it's hard to keep track of that while I'm watching my step. The screaming and grunting doesn't give me any indication of the value of stepping on a barrel or a post versus on a building or a person. I still think this game is hilarious, but I prefer it without so much random screaming. (Or was I just ruining everyone's lives the whole time?)

Dessert War by Krapht 2018-08-15T22:32:51Z

I agree with others that the art is cute. If you'd have time for bloopy sound effects, that would have bumped everything up. It took a couple of plays for me to understand the mechanics, even after reading the instructions. It seems, after playing against my own self, that the cupcakes have a real advantage in going first. A solid submission.

Bloated Garbage! by Bonyok77 2018-08-14T02:31:29Z

This looks great (although game play didn't quite live up to the trail of garbage following my cursor on the splash page.) I'm skeptical that the audio was created in 72 hours because it sounds so good. The music also sounds like stock. (I didn't mark down, though, because I trust you when you say it's original.) I skimmed the instructions, so I didn't understand the WASD controls and thought the game was broken. Regular mode has a great pace once I figured out that I should move the bin instead of clicking on stuff. I still can't figure out war mode.

Space Invasion by Nam Nguyen 2018-08-15T18:52:26Z

Awesome work! Somehow, even though I've seen games where barriers grow (and kill), I was really impressed by the encroaching walls. Maybe it's because the shapes are organic. The gun is super cool. I thought the player character being a plain square was a missed opportunity, but the stretch animations were worth sacrificing a more elaborate character design. I also enjoy the snarky humor. One of the best games I've played this jam!

Save Me A Seat by chaitae 2018-08-20T05:22:55Z

I bombed the first play trying to figure out the mechanics, but I'm glad I stuck it out. The art and audio are terrific. What was really interesting (and frustrating) was the talking mechanism. Being forced to stutter raised my actual anxiety level, whether I was hitting the right keys or not. I didn't find that feeling fun, but I respect it as a novel game experience. Unusual concept well-executed!

Cluster by Ignacio Zamorano 2018-08-22T20:46:34Z

Yes to all the votes for graphics and animation! This is a very polished looking game. Was there something special to do with the cloud files and the zip files? I just punched everything. I would like a big response when a file gets lost in a folder-- maybe the folder gets bigger-- but I think it's unfair to expect everything in 72 hours. This game is already more than most teams achieved. Congratulations!

ECO WARRIORS by FreeLivesGames 2018-08-19T04:38:27Z

Production values are fantastic. The gun hits are really satisfying. I love slogging through the dead bad guys and the way the tree moves to "talk." I wish there were a shortcut through the tree dialog so I could keep grinding away while waiting for extraction. This is one of my top two for fun. (The other is about old men in sleeping bags, so completely opposite in feel.)

Bunnymark by Azumin 2018-08-15T20:45:37Z

Congratulations! For me, it would help a lot if the enemy bunnies were flipped to face the other way. I wasn't sure which was my territory at first. It was also hard for me to remember all the types of bunnies, and I didn't connect them to the icons (except the ninja bunny). I like the idea of bunnies, and your graphics are nice looking; I just need some help figuring out what I'm looking at.

Running Out Of Spice by Raivk 2018-08-15T18:35:26Z

I love your twist on the theme, but I'm unable to play, possibly because my OS is so old. Here is the error message, in case it's helpful. Raivk.png

Flame VS Water by Taner 2018-08-21T06:36:25Z

The graphics are cute, and the game works as it should (which I think is an accomplishment.) I'll bet this would be easier with a controller than trying to manage walking and aiming on my laptop trackpad. I found your game from your post on someone's blog entry asking for web games. I wish people would label their links as having an HTML5 version. I would have skipped over this one because I don't have a Windows computer.

The Unicorn Shelter by senokos 2018-08-14T02:00:42Z

The goofy graphic brought me in, which was a bit of bait 'n' switch, but I had fun. The game story is surprisingly sophisticated. This is the kind of game where I'd keep clicking because each day moves quickly, even though the algorithms aren't set to advance the player very quickly.

Out Of Space by Dennis Jeong 2018-08-14T01:33:30Z

Good on you for doing *something*. I didn't quite know where to start with your game, but after I figured out dragging instead of simply clicking, it got better. I guessed the icons stand for strength, intelligence, and something (I closed the window alreadly). Graphics indeed look good! I like the drag action; it has a good snap.
