Hey, quite good an entry. I like it very much. Keep it up!
Difficult game, reminds me of a twist on the classic game and watch games. Truck controls felt a little unresponsive, or just awkward maybe, but it didn't really take away from it.
You commented on one of my posts a while back, so the name of your game is in my game. I knew I had to try it! Accurately named, I'd say, and a pretty cool soundtrack, too. One thing I noticed was that I couldn't exit the game I was in. Is there even a lose state? I had like -30% science. But that's okay, who would want to leave your game anyways :)
@adonisdevs Thanks! Yes there is a lose state. If you hit -100% the game is over. Admittedly it is a bit difficult to lose but I ran out of time to balance it out better. The higher your percentage of science though the faster it should spawn. As for exiting, "Q" should quit for any desktop version. That doesn't work in the HTML version, though "N" should take you to the start screen.
@croze I use to play something similar to this on my Commodore 64, it was babies flying out of a burning building and you had to bounce them to safety. Most of the inspiration came from that.
I really like this game. The learning curve to master the car movement makes the game very fun.
Sorry for the science, I didn't save it.
This truck is hard to manage...
Good by science.
Nice little game. I feel, that it would be nicer for the truck to catch things only at it's rear part, to make it a bit harder.
The pitch is great though. It would be funny to add some monkey sounds in there :)
Good job.
Loved the game and loved the music (although it did get a bit repetitive after a while)!
Nice mechanics, challenging, and easy to understand. My only criticism would be that the car controls are bit sporadic and slidey.
@hakro - Thanks, originally I had the truck bed as the only collider area and technically it still is but it expands up to just before the hood as it seemed a little too difficult. Also considered flipping the truck so it was always going forward but that was was frustrating
@conorod I agree that the sound gets repetitive. Definitely not my strong point. The truck controls were on purpose, note that you can break using the left ctrl key. It was incredibly easy to play when the truck didn't have the deceleration portion but I may have overdid it.
I really like the idea and I think the game is pretty cool. I just found hard to control the truck but everything was great and balanced. Great Job!
I can't decide if I hate or love the controls.
On one hand, they're weird and infuriating. On the other, the more i play it the better I get.
As others have stated, the music loop is a bit short and gets on your nerves after a while; but that's standard fare for compo.
The info dump of controls/rules at the beginning is a bit hard to mentally parse. I know it's LD and time is the enemy, but in the future consider teaching the player the rules as they play; so for example once they collect a few science, flash a little sign on the garage telling them to drop it off. The controls themselves were also all over the place from what one usually expects, so it just added to the list of things I had to read/remember before going in.
it ok i guess
Cool game! I included it in my compilation video series of the Ludum Dare 42 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/Bq9IqSUYX8Y
Thanks Jupiter!
@fireslash I completely agree about the instructions. I realized at about 20 minutes before deadline that i hadn't provided any sort of instructions which was definitely critical. A quick intro tutorial would certainly be a great way to go. The controls were an attempt to add some skill to the game. You mentioned that they were a little all over the place compared to standard controls, what would you have done differently? The controls are Unity standard so that you could use a controller.
Well this was actually quite some fun! I had some audio bugs, but maybe those were due to unity and webgl issues, I dont know. Felt pretty awkward to catch all the science and bring it back into the building for the monkeys to just throw it out again xD And somehow I couldve gone on for ever xD Good job on the game mechanic! I like it.
@jackou thank you! Yeah the audio bugs seem to be the conversion to WebGL. There is probably a compression setting I don't have right someplace. The monkey's are contained on floors 2-3, the bottom level is a safe zone ;)
A good game idea, the music should be improved. The graphics are good. Try our game too, maybe you'll like it)
Fun game. I liked the randomness of the idea. :) That music was hypnotic.
@garygreen Thanks! For the main drum beat you hear during the game play, I literally went into Bosca Ceoil and just started moving my mouse around until I got something that didn't sound like complete trash. I have no musical talent whatsoever
Ha, the music didn't bother me, possibly because I didn't live long enough to get bored. I agree with others' frustrations with the truck controls. A weird glitch: sometimes I'd get my Mac's widget screen. Then I'd have to swipe back to get to game play. At this point, the truck would be stuck, and I'd need to hit the brake to release it. I'm playing on an old Mac OS with Firefox 61.0.2.
@wrenpirate thank! Don't have a Mac so can't test it out. I did try it in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge without a problem though. Any suggestions on the controls are greatly appreciated for future projects. The acceleration and deceleration are 100% by design, let me know if you are talking about something else.
we can make an intense moving truck simulator game out of this, nice!
Nice game! Really like the randomness of the game! Car physics are little bit weird at some points but otherwise good game!
The car was a little bit too floaty for my liking, but I very much liked the bouncing "science" when your truck was fully loaded, overall I found your idea very likable :)
The car is very difficult to control. I understand there's a complex engine under the hood to control its speed, but I felt I was missing a point of reference. This did not control like any car I'd ever driven in any video game. Maybe the mechanics would have been better suited to a boat, or a wingsuiter. Without a point of reference this felt a bit unplayable.
the music loop is also way too short and got on my nerves pretty fast.
@Anonymous - I do not disagree. Sound is a two factor issue for me, one I can't create sound very well and two is that I did it at almost the very end and didn't play test long enough for it to get on my nerves.
As for the controls, I'm still not getting that part. I'm good with people not liking it but I'm not getting the "why" so that I can improve it. I'm using some pretty standard accel and decel code but did fudge it a bit because the game was incredibly easy when there was almost no acceleration or deceleration. Both accel and decel are also effected by your total load, where it gets slower to accelerate and deceleration is harder. There is a break control as well. The controls are also meant to be something you get better at so you can win faster.
Good feedback, just would like a bit more on the controls especially for future projects.
I think this is a good start to a game, but I feel like there are a few small things that would make big improvements. For the record, I did beat it.
1. The car physics felt very weird - like you would keep momentum when you changed directions from forwards to backwards but not vice versa (or you'd lose some momentum that way). This made it hard to slow down without using the brake for the precision adjustments to catch stuff. 2. I think having the monkeys there (even if their animation is two or three frames) to telegraph when stuff is thrown would be incredibly helpful. As it is, it's impossible to tell when there's going to be enough of a break to drop off the science. Instead, I had to rely on the boost to reliably get back without missing too much science. 3. The throws felt pretty random - without any indicators of where they might go, you just had to accept that you were going to miss some. It would be nice if they kinda followed patterns such that you could catch them all if you were experienced, but it feels kinda unfair as it is.
But like I said, this is a start to a fun game. Well done within the time limit!
@cromo thank you for the detailed feedback especially on #1 as the car physics is what everyone hates but hasn't really said why, perhaps this is it. It might be a math error, I'll check it out.
On #2 & #3, this was actually something that was planned and I just ran out of time. I was going to have a monkey show up and the bigger the monkey, the more likely he would throw it further to give you an idea of where it might get thrown. They were also going to occasionally jump out and attack or something. Throws are more or less random right now. The mass of the different science items are different and they have a range of power that is thrown behind them (plus the window they come out of changes things a bit).
Excellent feedback, thank you!
Addictive game! It is hard but quite interesting. The mechanics are innovative. Overall, nice job!
But the gameplay could be improved. The car was too difficult to get to the destination I wanted. Maybe the acc was not high enough. This made the whole game difficult and frustrating.
