LD38 — A Small World

Pod2000 by nidup 2017-05-06T12:32:21Z

I wish I had put on the headphones, it sounded like it would've been really immersive. Audio was fantasic, seemed simple of me, but I really enjoyed typing with the sound effects.

Scenes in a Globe by nratcliff 2017-05-06T12:24:31Z

Immediate regret of turning over the globe from the cowboy music, immediate excitement when I rotated it back!

World Jumper by paradroid001 2017-05-06T12:05:24Z

For the immediate warning that this wasn’t a game, I spent quite a bit of time on this, probably because I found it so entertaining! It seemed like an accidental parody of being a “goodbye world”. It was challenging to try to get to another planet, I think my best is 5 before “super jumping” off into oblivion.

NekomimiAtsume by parkdraws 2017-05-06T11:47:38Z

It made me feel a little weird about myself, telling a girl to change rooms while I pet her for her love. Just a little weird. Nice start on a pet genre, lots of room to explore!

Petit Adventure by Sun-Wukong 2017-05-06T11:57:42Z

Like everyone else is saying, I love the artwork for this.... but man it's punishingly hard.

Say Something by Houcine Chelbi 2017-05-07T13:49:48Z

I really enjoyed the character model, would've liked to see more polish on all of it. The difficulty was punishingly hard, but the audio and visuals were nice.

Retro Rabbit by wtoa 2017-05-06T12:18:06Z

96307! Loved the feel of this, nice and simple, clean and enjoyable! The carrots seemed like a mixed blessing, and it felt easier to find the leaks when the world got smaller, even though my anxiety was going up. Very nice play.

kumo. by Turbo Hermit 2017-05-06T20:00:11Z

Interesting. I agree with Zorg, I wish there was more to do with this. I expected the sound to turn into more music, it was relaxing and chill though.

Monolith by samlo 2017-04-26T01:50:22Z

I've been taking notes of games I've played and prepping to rate them when we go live, but wanted to jump in quick and say this really feels like Stephen King Dark Tower, even if not intended, well done.

Monolith by samlo 2017-05-06T11:42:37Z

Holy butt that got hard! I immediately thought of Stephen King Dark Tower when I saw the monolith, and again after I started getting shot at. I went from a score of 2, to 25 from 1st to second round so it was easy to pick up, but man it became a 3D bullet hell quickly. Really enjoyed playing this.

Happy Little Guys :) by smunders 2017-04-28T01:47:56Z

It's my pleasure to give this a 5/5 for music. I would've loved to have seen more levels, more songs, more of it all, really enjoyed this, it was over too quick.

A Tiny Place by grahhhhhhhhh 2017-05-01T21:10:15Z

@Xavier_Indie_Gamedev It's strange I'm getting reports of a lot of bugs including the ones you mentioned, but game works fine with my system. Not sure what's up with the white box glitch, the asset was designed the same way and made into the same file type as everything else... :(

A Tiny Place by grahhhhhhhhh 2017-05-07T13:30:07Z

Thanks Rixud! I'm glad to see at least one person is getting the game to work... I republished the game with an updated engine, can people let me know if the game is or isn't working? And if you're running Mac or Windows? I wouldn't think that makes a difference but it seems to be working fine universally on mac OS..

Food Force by Kinjin 2017-05-01T21:08:03Z

Not a bad little game, I liked the take on the theme! I'm not sure what the difference is between the apple, soda and microbes since whenever I shoot or touch any of them it seems to do the same thing. Am I supposed to allow the apples to be eaten? Overall, very pretty and interesting, needs a little polish with controls and such, but great start!

LD42 — Running out of space

Flood by Megalink 2018-08-18T03:11:38Z

You responded to my thread requesting honest feedback, so here goes:

I actually really liked this... I was skeptical of the graphics at first, but I gotta say, whatever that first weapon is really worked for me, I enjoyed watching it. Plus killing the enemies was really satisfying.

I felt a little punished when moving onto a new screen and being instantly damaged multiple times by an enemy, but I don't know that I have any real major critiques. I do think this has the potential to be drawn out a little bit further, but I think it might be a challenge for you to keep it fresh. Maybe a crafting system, some overall goal... but I can still see it staying kind of repetitive, maybe it's just best in a jam? You know what, if you were to focus on a new build and take out the flooding, I think you've got the skills to make a full length game that would be really fun to play.

Bomber Dash by harusame 2018-08-14T23:40:50Z

3rd on the leader board! Agree with @linky439 that it would be nice to attack vertically, otherwise would also like to see what true final score would be after death while playing, but it kept me playing so that I could top the boards! Fun game!

Follow Line by mukult 2018-08-15T01:59:18Z

You're right, I did really enjoy this game.. this exemplifies how a simple game that has a decent amount of polish can shine. If I had a critism, it would be that it was difficult to get going not knowing what was going to hurt me. Wish there was more to this, I'd still be playing if there were!

Become a Monster by Rodrigo DenĂşbila 2018-08-17T17:25:35Z

Lol, this was pretty funny. My complaint is that it's too easy to lose your gainz, but that's OK, because even though I had to restart, I was able to beat the buff out of other bros at the gym. This was pretty well done for a dare, nice work!

Clippy's Awakening by aevek 2018-08-16T02:07:13Z

@aevek I checked out this game and read the comments afterwards, I'm on the mac build which looks like it may still have the photos bug, and the final boss bug... I shot at the firewall, reflected bullets back, and even ran around in it while cut and pasted, but no avail :( I enjoyed this game a lot, the easter egg made me laugh, nice take on the theme!

Swirling Infestation by Coda Highland 2018-08-15T02:16:05Z

@coda-highland My game froze when I made it down to about 10 swarms left on the web version, it said it was out of memory, so I tried again, almost immediately teleported to the other side of the screen, and then it froze. So I tried a third time, got down to 8 swarms and ran out of memory again, lol I did get some decent amount of playtime in the first play through. The controls are a little sluggish, and I did see the swirling was growing in size, I wish it hadn't froze so I could see how large the infestations get.... I had just found my groove

Dear Leader's Diet Plan by Historymaker118 2018-08-17T01:11:12Z

I figured out the same trick as @fluffy-kaeloky, spamming the space bar. Humor was spot on, kept me chuckling, I love submissions like this, nice!

Dirty Duty by grahhhhhhhhh 2018-08-15T12:12:24Z

@bela-bohlender Thanks for noting the wrong source... I blame it on the ludum dareier's lack of sleep.. Thanks for playing!

Dirty Duty by grahhhhhhhhh 2018-08-17T12:22:21Z

@nam-nguyen Thank you for the feedback... 1-star ratings are coming... jk :) Thank you pointing out the flaws, I think knowing how much I can do in a weekend is one of my weaknesses, and as you've pointed out, the game suffers when I try to do too much. The best entries in the jam I've found are usually from teams, professionals (or at least more full time hobbyists), or people that take the simplest idea and polish the heck out of it. It's a problem when 3 hours out from the deadline, I'm still working on level design. I need to take a step back and work on a simpler project next time, thanks for the feedback, I'll be checking out games including yours later tonight!

I didn't see that you already commented earlier (responding by scrolling upwards)! Then thank you for going back to give more feedback, I appreciate you taking the time to critique.

Dirty Duty by grahhhhhhhhh 2018-08-17T12:35:43Z

@jima your post is above and beyond, thank you for taking the time to be so detailed. I've never considered myself an artist, this is the first game where I think it came out halfway decent... here is one from I forget which jam it was.. you are the monster (sorry for resolution, I'm on work computer and don't want history to show the actual game loaded, so just a SS of a thumbnail)

Capture.PNG

I'm really happy with where my artwork has gone, but am aware that there's still a lot more skill to be learned.

Love the spaceship you've drawn, it's easy to admire, while not being able to break down what you've drawn and learn from it. Your explanation was incredibly helpful, and I can't wait to "get back to the drawing board" and try out some of the tips you gave! I can't believe you took the time to draw examples, especially after a long jam weekend!

Thank you for taking the time, this is the kind of feedback that is actually helpful, but I think some people are afraid to give. I understand why, when we're looking for feedback on our own games we don't want to upset people that could then come and give bad feedback on ours... but it doesn't help us grow either. This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks!

Dirty Duty by grahhhhhhhhh 2018-08-17T12:38:33Z

@triplefox thanks for the feedback! I enjoyed making this game, but honestly like you said, it came from my wife and I talking about a 2 minute joke, which got made into "taken too far"! I like your idea for expansion, though I'm not sure this is my favorite game I've made, I also felt it was too far, and by day 2 it wasn't really funny anymore lol! Thanks for the comment and taking the time to play!

Dirty Duty by grahhhhhhhhh 2018-08-17T12:40:58Z

@aaranos Thank you for playing! To be fair, I don't like the artwork either lol! I'm not an artist, only trying to get better each time I do one of these! @jima gave some great tips that I'm going to try out this weekend and see if I can improve some more... watch out next jam, I'm coming!

Dirty Duty by grahhhhhhhhh 2018-08-17T12:45:29Z

@josia-roncancio That is an awesome suggestion, using one hand when possible. I remember being scolded for using arrows for movement and not including WASD. Now, so long as I don't need them, I make movement work using either.. you gave me another good tip to keep in mind!

The level design is my fault, when I was making it, I was aware that it was becoming too predictable, so I screwed the player by making some things relatively interpretive, and once even she takes a nap that she doesn't tell you about until the day of, so it's either good or bad luck, and then you have to remember next play through. It's not a great puzzle, but it's how I managed to get it done in time haha, bad excuse, I know :)

Dirty Duty by grahhhhhhhhh 2018-08-17T12:47:44Z

@megalink Thank you for the feedback! I'm surprised you like the music.. The title screen is 8 bars long, but the game is SUPER repetitive at only 2 bars! The only thing worse than my graphics are my musics, so I spent little time on it, got 2 bars that sounded OK, and then said go with it! Curious what collision issues you found? Playing games tonight, yours looks fun, thanks again!

Dirty Duty by grahhhhhhhhh 2018-08-18T01:58:24Z

@superqgs Hey! I tried uploading the flash file for direct download as well.. unfortunately I'm one of like 3 people on here that use stencyl, and to publish windows/mac, I need an upgraded version. Perhaps your flash player is out of date? No big deal if you can't play it :v:

Overload by ProgrammingDimension 2018-08-17T17:36:04Z

@deathray lol! I really like the idea and the music wasn't bad either, but like the other's said, UI was tough to deal with. I would consider adding stats to be viewed automatically, there's plenty of game space to use to show it! This is a great job overall though, you've got some sound effects in place where you need them, and the graphics aren't bad, overall, not a bad start!

High Factory by Jima 2018-08-18T02:36:07Z

@jima I put a thread out offering honest and harsh feedback, and you asked for it, so here it is!

First off, I like this game. I haven't really played much in this type of genre, but I could see myself really getting behind this idea if you made it into a larger scale game. I like the concept, but I think there needs to be more reward for accomplishing these tasks. It's great that I can mine faster and more efficiently, but the upgrades I can make with them don't feel worth it to me.. I don't get more excited about mining with the abilities to mine better.

I did actually rate your game really highly though, you know it's missing sound FX, tutorial, and I think I saw in the comments the issues about how much CPU it sucks up.... but the artwork, I gave a solid 5. I don't think you have to spend anymore time working on it, that style really does work... I'd instead focus on animations. Things like the furnace that you have to wait for could use some kind of notification that it's finished it's work and ready for pickup.

Falling off the island wasn't a real concern, but I'm not sure why it's in the game if it doesn't punish the player... I actually used it as a way to get back to the wood quicker! I think the last critique is perhaps a way to "automine" with the mouse like @fenderbate said, I don't mind waiting for the mouse to do it's thing, but I don't like holding the mouse done while it does it.

All in all, this is a great ludum dare entry, I think you'll do really well! If you want to make it a full game, just focus on some over arching goal, and keep building on your original concept. Great work!

HELP: The Illuminati captured my family and are forcing me to make this game by CaptainDreamcast 2018-08-16T21:18:29Z

Bravo, had me cracking up from the beginning and the design was sweet. The only complaints are nit-picky, so I won't even list them. Solid 5 for humor, hope to see you on the boards in that category.

Damage Control by nolanfa 2018-08-17T01:20:10Z

Excellent launch pad, I like the idea, but would echo that it isn't very clear to get started.. I nearly gave up after rereading the instructions a few times (honestly the instructions in my game are pretty bad too, we LD, we learn). I would like to see some more animations and sound effects, but I do like the take on the theme, so many people are computer or people themed, I like this one!

Bunny Bazooka by MZA 2018-08-17T18:32:05Z

This was drawn pretty nicely, a couple of things I would point out is that the difficulty progresses relatively slowly, and the music has a single bar with a completely different instrument which makes me think sound effect and that something is happening in the game when there isn't... I like the animations, all in all I would say to keep going with this or another game, the art is a great start, I think you could really find a niche with your style.

Spacebars by The Triumvirate 2018-08-14T22:56:11Z

You know... about 18 hours into this dare I figured out that space could mean space bar. @florian-van-strien put all of my critiques best. How the double jump is a little off, and it's slightly frustrating that I need to type "rety" to retry, because r hits down then up if you spell it out, however... all that said, I think you nailed the theme, and I love that the main character is the actual space bar! Too funny

Evolucity - Build as high as you can! by Mazzletov 2018-08-17T01:09:23Z

LOL! Thanks we all died! I love the idea, it was tough for me and I let a lot of people died, its really quizical to me how the GIF above you were able to stack so nicely! Nice take on the theme, I was just reading about vertical farming, and upwards is the way to go!

L: An Interactive Mystery by Cercle 2018-08-14T21:57:09Z

Bravo! Any chance of a walkthrough... I can't get into the notes! I've listened to every sound byte and read every blog, post, etc. but cannot figure it out! I'm dying to know the rest of the story, this far surpasses most ludum dare entries. Spectacular voice acting, thank you for this!

L: An Interactive Mystery by Cercle 2018-08-14T21:58:43Z

Lol, I figured it out about 30 seconds after posting that :)

L: An Interactive Mystery by Cercle 2018-08-14T22:18:24Z

@craigduth I hate to give anything away, but this was tough.. I would say to keep in mind terms of endearment...

A Tale of Fish by dalton5000 2018-08-14T23:06:57Z

How calming, love the artwork, very nice story-telling. I think something like this might work better for a younger audience, but agreed with @kokonaught that things could be sped up a little, and movement wasn't really that bad, but could've been smoother. It was cute.

Space Out by Pusakiller 2018-09-02T17:32:20Z

Good job on this game. I feel like the pace was a little slow, I would have appreciated more flow. The difficulty scaled well. Nice music, and animation!

Castle Defenders by Bela Bohlender 2018-08-14T23:42:35Z

I won the first time playing but then couldn't do it again! Those top scores make me think there's some kind of konami code plugged in or something! I like the artwork and concept, though I wish I were able to better comprehend strategy, fun play through!

Dat Der Sidescrulluh Game by Rayaarito 2018-08-14T23:23:58Z

Well that escalated quickly lol. I didn't use the gun for shooting, but instead for collecting hearts. It gets so difficult so quick that the bullets don't seem to have any impact and doom is inevitable. I liked how you added in the gun rotating when you moved and that you could pogo stick around the level lol

Deep Down by Nyunesu 2018-08-14T22:13:51Z

I DID IT! Each of the sections grew increasingly tough, but doable given enough patience. I know how these jams go, so I'm sure you ran out of time to do more level creation, but probably would've enjoyed playing another couple of level sets, nice work!

No Escape by JSD 2018-08-14T20:42:29Z

The game was fun even though I stink at it! I found myself getting overwhelmed really quickly, so I wonder what a good score for this game is? I like the graphics and concept, would like it if I could look around... I'll call them the beater cops... when they came up to me, I could outrun them for a while, but once they were in the foreground, all I could do was shake them, too hard to shoot once they got that close. Overall, nice game!

Sugar Withdrawal by Raccoon_JS 2018-08-16T00:39:14Z

Congratulations on your first game! There's not much to this, but that's a lot of us first time around I think, especially if you had to do graphics, sounds, all that yourself. Keep doing jams and pushing yourself, and you'll find yourself happy with your progress.

SunnyLand by soumitra.shewale 2018-08-18T03:02:14Z

Great first game, the movement is pretty smooth however the second area was pretty punishing given the collision areas for the branches and the character... it's fine if you want to disallow players from jumping to platforms from underneath, but it there needs to be a little more space to allow players to skillfully get into a spot. The mechanics aren't bad, but like others have said, putting a little more difficulty into the levels will only help you! I'm pretty sure the wall was closing in on me, but I only saw it do that once. Good start, keep at it!

Pool Watch by Plukers 2018-08-14T20:16:42Z

That lifeguard it looking too smug for just having a couple dozen people drown on his watch lol... this game made me laugh, but I don't know if that was the point. Nice concept, fits the theme very well!

Storage Madness by rangoiv 2018-09-02T18:23:47Z

Sweet graphics. Some of the enemies were tough or annoying (snap chat ghost), but I loved the art style for everything, the hero, the enemies, terrain. Very attractive!

The City Of Forgotten Toys by dk5000p 2018-08-15T01:11:38Z

Oh wow, that's a lot to unpack! First off thanks for that music, I'm pretty sure I'm going to have it stuck in my head now. I'm also unclear about how to damage the mayor, I tried a few times but found myself overwhelmed and hit too many times and lost. By the comments it looks as though you can do it, but I'm not sure how. Overall pretty funny experience, but needs more polish

Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-15T01:32:21Z

First off, I'm personally not a big fan of text adventure games, so it means something when I say I was captivated. A big part of that is how you kept running out of space, I actually played a few times through and got a few different endings! It was nice looking, story was well thought out, nice submission!

Desktop Clout! by James Shipp 2018-09-02T17:45:02Z

Nice concept!

Inventory Quest by acfaruk 2018-08-20T01:12:49Z

I was really pumped about the concept, but other people pointed out the struggle of the timing, and once the inventory got full, it was tough to get a leg back up. Something I need to do, but might help you as well is finding someone to play test prior to the deadline :)

Last Shot by jeke 2018-08-17T01:31:32Z

This is a great game, what an awesome feature to not only worry about the black holes, but getting thrown off trajectory with the meteors... 4 planets was the perfect amount of challenge given how the black holes grow over time.. I hadn't read your "pro tip" before playing, but I found the same thing.. a well placed small black hole halfway through had a lot of impact! Had fun with this. Check out my game, not sure what you think about the artwork but I'd be up for discussing collaborating sometime.

Blob Attack by AdiH 2018-09-02T19:17:40Z

This was a short game, but I really enjoyed the concept. Using a depleting amount of space to eliminate the threat. Nice interpretation!

Space Invasion by Nam Nguyen 2018-08-17T17:09:44Z

Awesome game, very nice submission. Being the quick shooter I am, a couple of times I killed myself before reading your text, which I was enjoying. That's the worst comment I can make, I really enjoyed this, a lot of polish on the coding, and it goes to show how a well thought out idea with nice mechanics can really shine without an abundance of graphics or animations.

Treasure Room by PatteDeCanaard 2018-08-14T20:39:38Z

This is the definition of a great ludum dare game. A simple idea, polished to perfection. Very nice game, actually beat it on my first play, which started off as me refusing to kill the chests for their gold! Just thought of it now... do you have a counter in there to register how many gold coins are left after winning? Might add a competitive element to see who can win while letting as much gold spawn. Nice submission!

Cat Cat Attack! by naver 2018-08-15T00:26:07Z

Wow, this started off insane in the best way lol... it crashes when I lose on the mac, but I was able to beat it within three tries, great quick submission, I love short games like this that pack a powerful humor punch and then get out quick making you want more, nice job

High Tide [html5] by SuperQGS 2018-08-14T03:03:06Z

Not a bad game given the tools and experiences! I like how you said the tide coming in is your biggest problem, vs. crashing your space pod lol... Not bad, it gets crazy once you're down to a three tile island. I don't see a way to overcome at that point without going in the water.

High Tide [html5] by SuperQGS 2018-08-18T00:32:25Z

@superqgs All right, I had posted a thread asking if people wanted honest and harsh reviews, and you asked for it! I already posted on your game, but I'll give you a bit more in depth review, the good and the bad.

The good I think you should be proud of what you've made, learning to develop is a long process and you get get better every game you make. The tiles were different for each "stage" which made strategy easy to watch passively when the timer was getting low. The concept is right on, running out of space was nailed and I really like the interpretation. Not sure if this could expand into a full length game, but for a jam, I think you picked the right sized concept, and as you get more efficient at logic, you'll find more time to polish the game up and really make it shine, this is a great sized idea.. when you try to do too much (like I usually do) you find yourself half-assing too many things, and the game suffers. Perfect sized idea.

The bad A lot will come with experience. The controls are a little funky, both slugish, and using the two sets of arrows/WASD, I didn't like that I moved with the arrows if I only wanted to turn, but I found I could just turn by shooting a laser in that direction. There wasn't much of a challenge once I found the tile I could camp on and just hit "A" or "S" when a crab approached. Their AI was see-through, and only had two spawn spots. Lastly, I would advocate spending even just a half hour doing sound effects. Bfxr is a great tool for people like me that don't know how else to do them! Sound FX could be applied to laser shooting, crab getting hit, movement, helicopter, tide coming in. Don't know if this would help you, but when I develop I pick one thing (animations, sound FX, etc.) and play through and keep an eye out for each one of those categories, and see what I have in my skill set to do that item.

All in all, it's really not a bad start! I would reiterate, that this concept is perfect for a short game jam, just get more efficient at design, then spend a day making the game "juicy" (sound FX, animations, special FX, etc.) This really isn't a bad entry, I think you can grow as a developer fast if you put the time in :)

And by all means, feel free to tear my game to shreds! It's how we learn!

Running Out of Space by Jason Higerd 2018-08-15T20:24:43Z

Big fan of classic bomberman, it's interesting to see gameplay vs. environment. This is a good starting point, I hope Jason had fun and wants to continue to develop your game developing skills. It's always rewarding to see the fruits of your labor!

Leave me alone by kraiom 2018-08-14T22:47:19Z

Would like to see the CPU's turn a little slower so I could generate some strategy instead of feeling like I'm reevaluating the map each turn, otherwise this looks like the great foundation of a fun game!
