Wow! This is an incredibly beautiful game. The colours are amazing, but the character blurs a bit when hes moving. I don't know if that's intentional to indicate speed but there are much better ways without ruining the look! Level design could use a little work. Music matches the game very well though, its very upbeat and happy! I don't know what was the point of the frogs but they looked really cool. The black void slowly approaching wasn't really that significant as it was really, really slow. It also was really out of place, and seems like it was placed there only for the sake of the theme. Love the graphics anyway, nice peaceful game.

yulia 2018-08-15 10:49

good work! I like it...nice graphics and gameplay

soumitra-shewale 2018-08-15 11:21

@shinysteel The blur for the character is due to a glitch in unity rendering. If I use the pixel perfect settings to make it look clear, the animation skips a frame of animation from the animation entirely. As this looks better than a missing character for 1/12th of a second, i used this alternative. Yes, my priorities were messed up, level design definitely could use some work. The frogs were just props that looked slightly more interactive. They were supposed to be enemies at a point, but i couldn't scourge up enough time. The black void code had immensely sensitive speed code, so a little change could leave the game unplayable. I wrote that code 30mins before submission by the way. Yes, it definitely could be a lot better than it is now. Thanks for the positive feedback about the audio, graphics and mood though. I will definitely work on my priorities next time.

alien 2018-08-15 11:45

I think you should have opt out Graphics since they are assets from the Unity Store other than that, The gameplay is quite smooth there are few things you could improve like the blur when the character is moving, Increase the speed of the Black Void and a funny little bug where if you stand next to the trophy and triple jumped, You would be thrown into the air. For your first Ludum Dare this is actually pretty good. Overall The game was Smooth and Fun. Nice Job!

meatpudding 2018-08-15 11:49

Cool looking graphics. I like the animations and the characters. The music is pretty sweet too. If I would suggest something it's making the water a little less deadly.

albin 2018-08-15 11:52

Fun and cute game with really good graphics! I´m pretty sure the blurriness can be fixed by setting the Filter Mode in the import settings for all of your sprites to Point (no filter). You can access import settings by clicking on an imported sprites. Anyways other than the blurriness the game looked great and was fun to play. Good job!

arqcenick 2018-08-15 11:53

This was a nice game to play, and I like games with responsive controls. Only problem was character blurring during crouch(maybe you left bilinear filtering for that sprite on?) The game was short yes, but this is a game jam and it is not a problem for me. I also recommend you to opt out of graphics if the assets are used from the Unity though. Fun game, this is a very good entry for your first LD.

soumitra-shewale 2018-08-15 11:54

Thanks for the feedback @alien and @meatpudding. I will work on these criteria.

daria-s 2018-08-15 12:03

Looks really cool! Awesome pixelart. I got a couple of bugs - Charatcer becomes blurry often, mostly while crouching and jupming, sometimes even while runing. And also when you jump left at the beginning of 2nd level (I think it was the second one? I didn't check the others where it was possible as well), you didn't die and game just goes on an on but without you and you have to reload the game :) Overall really well done!

soumitra-shewale 2018-08-15 12:06

@daria-s , @arqcenick @albin The blur for the character is due to a glitch in unity rendering. If I disable bilinear filtering to make it look clear, the animation skips a frame of animation from the animation entirely. As this looks better than a missing character for 1/12th of a second, i used this alternative. This happens in unity 2018.2.1f1. And yes, @daria-s, I should really fix that bug.

jchaplin 2018-08-15 12:08

Cool game! I really like the style.

dankar 2018-08-15 12:23

Nice for your first ld jam. The player controls felt good and responsive. It would be good if the case when the player falls off the screen was handled. I had to restart the game completely to try again.

jsd 2018-08-15 14:19

Beautiful game. The pixel art was great.

Just two things: probably an indication of when the level ends would have been great, right now it's kind of abrupt and also it seems like the character sprite loses focus and the quality goes down sometimes when it moves for no real reason.

Great job!

soumitra-shewale 2018-08-15 16:53

@dankar Yes, I already coded that in, but as you fall on the left side of the screen on level 2, that part isn't handled. Thanks for pointing out. @jsd I Tried to fix that, but the animation glitches out and drops one frame. SO, the character looks invisible for a split second. Instead of that, I chose to blur it. Yes, an indication would help too.

raffe 2018-08-15 17:42

Its incredible that NO ONE knows that the scripts, movement and all of this is from Brackeys's videos, and the game's name is literally same as the Asset pack that he downloaded... Unfair, thats what I say. **OR** then you did the scripts by yourself. In that case, at least the game is good and has nicely done things. But yeah, I dont mean to offend, its just me and that I find it unfair :(

(I do know that you can use free and downloadable assets, but you even made people think you did them by yourself. That is the unfair part.)

robowarrior1982 2018-08-15 17:43

Good use of this graphic asset pack: https: //ansimuz.itch.io/sunny-land-pixel-game-art, there are problems with collisions and the sound effects are a little strong compared to the rest, but good for a first entry!

mateusboga 2018-08-15 17:50

I'm impressed on the level of detail the sprites have, beautiful game! The controls are really smooth, but the character seems to glide off of edges a little too easily, which can be a bit frustrating in parkour.

I discovered a bug where if you fall off of the cliff in the water level, you don't respawn.

Great game!

soumitra-shewale 2018-08-15 17:52

@raffe I Did The Scripts By Myself. Yes, it is allowed by the rules, but still, it is a transformative piece of art. The fact that I used it to mold my levels doesn't mean I have used absolutely no creativity or effort in my game at all. This way, everyone who uses Unity or Unreal have absolutely no talent as they didn't write their game in machine language or maybe even binary. Use of graphic assets is permitted and this matter is taken with light importance in the Jam category. If this were in the Compo Category, definitely this use would be unfair and would be a different story all together.

mutskun 2018-08-15 17:53

I think you should probably Opt-Out on graphics on account that you used graphics from the Unity Store

a5da85af-7140-40e3-8fc4-11e652c3f135_scaled.jpg

I also think that level design could be improved, but aside from that, good job!

raffe 2018-08-15 17:56

I don't rly get that how does getting assets from asset store have anything to do with coding skills or talent using unity or unreal engine, but whatever. And good job if you wrote the scripts. And for real I mean good job. I don't want to be toxic or anything.. Sorry if you felt so. :)

itzjojo 2018-08-15 18:00

third level spawns you above water, bushed with hitboxes?? but movement was fine

bigbosserndog 2018-08-15 18:02

The platforming was ok. But I have to be very honest. You do have to opt out of the categories for the stuff you didn't do, such as the pixel art. It was not very clear where the end of the level was, and also there are blocks which you expect to be in the background which are actually platforming blocks you can stand. Overall, it was no very well polished and was not a very good game.

historymaker118 2018-08-15 18:03

This game is nice to look at, but really really lacking in the gameplay department. There is no indication of what the objective is (I seemed to warp to the next level without having done anything) I don't understand the purpose of the toads, you die in the water far too easily (a single pixel out and you're forced to restart) and I cannot see how this in any way relates to the theme. Check out some videos on game feel (also known as 'juice') and try to add some better tutorialisation for your next project.

flower 2018-08-15 19:52

Game looks very good!)

soumitra-shewale 2018-08-16 13:36

Thanks for all the constructive feedback, I will work on it, and I didn’t know about the opting out of the things you didn’t do part, I will definitely do better next time.

sloyd 2018-08-16 14:03

Neat looking game. Though the art seems familiar.

gamescalation 2018-08-16 14:25

Im fairly bad at platformers though tried to go as far as possible for me. Overall i had quite some fun, but it had weird hitboxes and reset me kinda randomly sometimes.

devio 2018-08-16 14:28

I have to agree with @sloyd here, The art did look familiar but rated it anyway since I could not think of where I had previously seen it (if I had) Overall, The game has promise, but it took me getting told by my chat that the water was slowly expanding. I think you could have played on the theme a little more, but good work on the implementation.

hugimugi7 2018-08-16 14:46

Very nice graphics but everything else just seems rushed!

filgreen3 2018-08-16 15:16

Cool platformers. the level with water is not improved. The water collider should be slightly lower

nufflee 2018-08-16 18:43

Nice game even though it was quite short and the water level was quite hard, but very interesting concept! Other levels might be a bit too easy though and it could be wise if you disabled player control until they hit the ground after spawning. Nice short game and a really good one for your first LD!

sublustris 2018-08-17 06:07

Cute gfx style!

ekilibr 2018-08-17 06:43

Good to start doing game jams at your age. Continue doing it, that's how you learn the most... :)

jamison 2018-08-17 06:44

One quick and easy suggestion to make the platforming feel better is to add variable jump height. For example, if the player releases the jump button while their vertical speed is positive (on the way up), then divide vertical speed by 2.

nam-nguyen 2018-08-17 07:08

@jamison I think the height with and without the jump is not 2, maybe its like 1.5 or something. Because if its 2, then its a double jump and you can just press jump another time.

Anyhow, @soumitra-shewale I think the gameplay was simple but well executed, I did wonder why the graphics looks familiar though, and I recall some official Unity tutorials done with this character. Beside that, I think you had a pretty clean implementation of a platformer, it definitely is a good start. You have time to learn, keep it up! See you in LD43 xD

aevek 2018-08-17 07:20

Pretty solid platformer, especially for a first game. There are some weird jumps in the level design, particularly on the second level where I kept hitting my head on the second rung, and on the water level the lengths felt a little weird. The game could also benefit from enemies or some other hazard, but it was fine without for this length.

soumitra-shewale 2018-08-17 07:35

@aevek So, the level difficulty should increase uniformly. Is that what you mean by "level design improvements"?

king-kujito 2018-08-17 10:52

The idea to this game is present, the game itself however is a little rough around the edges. Reading up on some level design theory would be highly beneficial for this game.

keyurrana 2018-08-17 18:34

Fun little platformer. I had a few collision issues here and there, but nothing major. Transition between levels could've been smoother. Also, the void was very slow. It would've added much more tension to the game if it was faster. Overall, good job!

grahhhhhhhhh 2018-08-18 03:02

Great first game, the movement is pretty smooth however the second area was pretty punishing given the collision areas for the branches and the character... it's fine if you want to disallow players from jumping to platforms from underneath, but it there needs to be a little more space to allow players to skillfully get into a spot. The mechanics aren't bad, but like others have said, putting a little more difficulty into the levels will only help you! I'm pretty sure the wall was closing in on me, but I only saw it do that once. Good start, keep at it!

kingdork 2018-08-19 02:54

Fun sound! Cute Graphics!

n00b 2018-08-19 02:56

This is a very fun game. I did run into quite a few bugs (including a game breaking one). I loved the music and the graphics. You have a lot of talent. This is probably one of the best first LD submissions I have ever seen.

occultone 2018-08-19 03:01

Suggestions for the programming side since that seems to be what you want feedback on. Physics felt slippery, like drag wasn't being applied. You may want to check how you're doing slope handling because it seems to intermittantly lose track of if it's on the ground or not, and stops jumping. Water affects you even if you aren't in it (IE: You're on the ground but touch the space right above it). It's worth checking out the Unity "Physics2D.BoxCast" section on their documentation page for ideas. Raycasts are so 2016. ;)

Good first entry, and I wish you luck in your game dev journey!

digital-bacon 2018-08-19 05:30

Cute graphics, catchy music and old school sound fx. Simple controls -- always a plus! Only thing that spoiled it for me was the almost pixel-perfect jumps required to get through the level. Also got caught on some of the scenery, leading to an early death. Plus a couple of times I died for no apparent reason. Still, plenty of potential to build a fun little playformer. Good effort!

brandon-napky 2018-08-19 07:29

Nice parallax effect, and moving the player around felt intuitive. I would've liked the levels to be a bit more engaging. Please rate us back as well <3

tomg 2018-08-19 07:57

Not really sure what's happening. I am warped instantly to either another part of the level or a completely new level. Would love some user feedback to explain what's going on.

peachtreeoath 2018-08-19 18:14

Eyecatching game, the sprites definitely got a lot of people to click in here lol. I only understood the game once I took my time and saw the void encroaching on you. I surprisingly haven't seen this implemented yet this LD so props on that. The game is definitely on the easy side but I got what you're going for regardless. Some tweaking on balance and level design (perhaps a level that makes you go left first so you get really close to the void) can really push this further.

saoi-games 2018-08-20 04:40

Thank you for sharing your game with me. I played it on my stream tonight at https://www.twitch.tv/saoigames

I have rated your game, but all of my feedback was captured in the stream. It was close to the end.

You can hear my comments in the archive at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/299357576?t=06h36m30s

Congrats on your first ludum dare. I hope you keep working on this and polish the levels.

superendeg 2018-08-21 11:01

Nice entry given it's first one. But I got problem that it's very basic and as I progressed, levels just became simpler and simpler. Also transition between levels might be smoother, otherwise it looks like game is glitching out.

shakedimus 2018-08-22 15:44

A basic platformer that looks and sounds very nice but I ndeed had the feeling it was glitching when changing levels. And the jump wasn't really solid I also had the feeling some collision detection with the water was weird. Also sometimes you could jump very high by pressing spaccen and arrow up I think.

jamesolivermusic 2018-08-25 12:33

Beautiful game. Your victory theme sounded somewhat familiar ;) The jump sound was a little too loud. Perhaps give the player something else to do to best utilise those amazing graphics/animations, and make level screen transitions a little more understandable!

s0rax 2018-08-29 11:52

Good graphics, sometimes, the collision are really strange and I didn't understand what is the purpose of the frog. And it will be better if you had a real finish area (with sprite for example) for having more information about the end level. Good entry for a first LDJam :)
