LD42 — Running out of space

Monster Girl Chaos: Hollow Apple by FireSlash 2018-08-15T03:45:07Z

Nice work! The game was very self-explanatory and I didn't have any frustrations with it. Pretty well executed for the time constraints. I thought the dialog was funny. Peregrine felt very strong, able to move, then attack, then dive bomb to escape.

Does the web slow down enemies or block them in any way? It didn't seem to, so I wasted a few turns putting up defensive walls of webs that I think they just walked through.

By the way, in the second level, you can lure the enemies to the side of the river using Peregrine, then have her retreat while you pick them off with Felina. I think the game could have gone with more choke points or cover or something. Also not immediately clear that "Jetpack" units can fly (is that why they could go over the webs?)

I think I beat it though. Difficulty felt just about right!

Blow the Hen Down by NickZangus 2018-08-27T05:47:12Z

Really really fun! If I had one complaint, it would be that it wasn't very clear to me that the chickens flew back if you threw them overboard. The first time I played, I was frantically throwing them overboard without realizing they were coming back. Once I figured it out, there were too many and I had to restart in order to beat it on my second try.

Apparatus by JustinMullin 2018-08-19T12:16:17Z

I didn't get too far (1 door and 2 spaces unlocked) but I enjoyed it and I could see the potential for getting mildly addicted. Needs to be easier to restart other than closing the game and reopening, since I sure had to restart a few times in the beginning. Also, it wasn't clear to me that I had to open one of the doors to get another set of blueprints--not obvious how to proceed.

Nicely done though!

Demonologist by Ghen 2018-08-15T07:32:34Z

I beat it! I actually had fun reading the guide! I wish there were more enemies but it was fun.

Running Out in Space! by Ekilibr 2018-08-17T06:17:55Z

Clever design. Cute title art! I like that running out of space is both a blessing and a curse in this game, depending on the level. Short and sweet. Would love to see what other mechanics you can come up with for this next! I think there's a bug because I need to move left before I can move right when each level starts.

Flood by Megalink 2018-08-16T05:02:04Z

Really smooth animations for so few pixels (especially dat birb). That bow was REALLY satisfying to use. I survived for 3:03. I kind of liked the lack of music actually, made me feel isolated and alone.

Wherehouse by SalamiChild 2018-09-02T04:17:01Z

I believe the game is framerate dependent. It seems to run very fast on my 165hz monitor. I couldn't really tell what was going :(

Easter Shabobble by King Kujito 2018-08-22T17:01:39Z

Aww, it was really cute. I liked the walking sound effects and the animation! A few things I did not like was that it was hard to make precise jumps from a standstill, and it was hard to turn around on small platforms because there's no way to turn without also moving forward.

Super Responsible Parent by dietzribi 2018-08-21T00:13:55Z

Wait a minute... the newscaster said "maybe this guy will [save them]", as he gestured to the empty space on his right. At that moment, the protagonist jumped up in a heroic way. But he wasn't on the TV screen, he was clearly in FRONT of the TV. So how did the newscaster know that he was there if he was watching the broadcast instead of being there in real life? 0/10 literally unplayable.

Jokes aside, I LOVED this. Creative use of the team, creative levels, fun gameplay, fun dash mechanic, fun level manipulation with letting out the air, funny cutscenes. Just a really solid entry overall. I'd love to see more levels with more mechanics!

A Hundred Dogs by gentoogames 2018-08-17T04:05:55Z

Loved it! A little bit hard to manage if you start placing too many dog bowls since pick up and put down is the same key. But the chaos was fun! Also, those poor dogs!!!! Haha

I didn't end up finishing cuz I got this error when I was trying to open a toilet surrounded by dogs: ``` ___________________________________________ ############################################################################################ FATAL ERROR in action number 1 of Step Event0 for object oSolid:

CLOZURE by saucygames 2018-08-15T04:03:34Z

Hmm... it only seems to jump for me about 1/4 of the time that I press the button. The short jump button makes the jump sound, but I don't go anywhere... can't even clear the 2nd jump. Also, I got stuck in the wall at the very beginning on my first play:

Capture.PNG

Caving In by Scornz 2018-09-01T07:42:09Z

Jumping felt good. I had fun with it! I got to 360m before giving up since I think I had seen everything at that point. I really liked the sound effect as you were climbing. I thought the boulder sounds off screen were kind of annoying, however. Solid entry!

Eating Sim by robochase6000 2018-08-16T04:14:11Z

Played this with Pilorekt on stream! It was fun! Quite a bit of depth, I still don't know the best strategy. Nice work. The physics worked really well, and graphics didn't get in the way.

Daycare Dilemma by Random-storykeeper 2018-08-16T08:02:52Z

There are times when you actually can't win due to RNG. Even if you speed up the conveyor belt, the item you need doesn't always show up. I had two babies that wanted food but no food showed up, and I didn't have enough money to buy anything. You should make sure that items they need are always on or about to be on the conveyor belt to solve this, or only allow for those "impossible" scenarios after a certain point when you have adequate funds :)

Music is great! Once I figured it out it was fun and charming. I lost for some reason when I had 600 points. I probably missed a kitten/baby on the conveyor belt. I think the kitten/baby should shake or make a warning sound when they're about to fall off the conveyor belt or they're about to "die" of neglect/starvation/thirst

Little Shop of Junk by auxC 2018-08-27T05:36:51Z

I liked it overall. Simple graphics work well, and I was definitely running out of space. Are the levels and spawns of items random, though? I quit on day four or five after pulling the lever maybe three times in a row without getting any blue boxes, and the guys wanted four blue boxes.

There is Never Enough Space!!! by Jamie Rollo 2018-08-14T05:15:26Z

I lol'd at sorting butts. I only wish that "Thanks for friendss" was a valid tweet because I totally would tweet that. A bit on the hard side but great personality!

Detox by FiloGC 2018-08-20T23:24:27Z

Loved the graphics, and the physics worked quite well, making it satisfying to bop the toxins out of the way. I actually got the "running out of space" feeling as the sky was filling with balls, making it harder to knock away the bad ones. Really, the only complaint aside from the simplicity of the game is the score sound getting a little annoying as it speeds up too fast. Fun overall, I enjoyed it!

TINY TOWNS by BearishMushroom 2018-08-14T05:36:37Z

Couldn't get past the 3x7 level where you start with the Garbage and Electric in the middle and need 10 happiness.

Love it! I'm really digging the graphics. The puzzles are hard but satisfying. If I had one suggestion, it would be that I want to place roads by clicking and dragging--but it's only noticeable on larger levels.

No Room for Error by LexiChan 2018-08-16T04:00:30Z

I think there's a vsync/FPS/delta time issue or something. If I launch the game with very low settings, everything is slow motion! Runs fine on Ultra settings! I couldn't get past the blue things on the ground though.

It was a little hard to avoid enemies/jump and their hitboxes seemed too big. I thought the graphics looked great and shooting mechanics felt good.

EVOLUTION by Noa Calice 2018-08-15T05:33:37Z

I beat it! Take that, Earth!

But really, great entry. I wish it were more of an involved game, but it had some fantastic mood. Pretty disturbing, and almost made me not wanna keep killing the cute little planet :(

Loot Keeper by outstar 2018-08-14T07:48:10Z

Has a great look to it, and great concept. Would love to see it built upon. Tutorial was very clear as well! But it was hard to see exactly which squares items took up (maybe a transparent outline behind each item so you can see the boundaries of the item?) I agree with Jimbly, would have been easier to click to pick up, right click to rotate, and left click to drop.

Clippy's Awakening by aevek 2018-08-17T03:02:52Z

I found a game-breaking bug. I used my Cut/Paste ability in My Pictures, moved into the Photos folder while still cloaked, and headed straight for the Noods, but my Cut/Paste ran out when I was inside the firewall blocking Noods. When I respawned, I was back in My Pictures, but Photos was still open and I was stuck forever :(

Was still fun while it lasted!

Clippy's Awakening by aevek 2018-08-17T04:11:37Z

all i wanted was some Noods :P

Penguin Pressure by icecoldsombrero 2018-08-15T05:50:06Z

Does not launch :(

The Flesh Pit by frankiesmileshow 2018-08-14T05:55:13Z

You NAILED the feel of this game. I love the huge sprites. All of the attacks felt super weighty. The game had really good feel to it, especially with the silly-yet-somehow-really-atmospheric mouth-made sound effects :)

Some of the jumping felt a little off, and it was hard to pick up the right weapon when a few weapons were overlapping. But as a whole package, it was fun!

I survived 6 waves and killed 49 monsters before dying by jumping off the top of the screen. I thought I was supposed to get the most meat... I probably should have read the description first!

Pervertica - CCG by mitus 2018-08-16T07:11:11Z

Sometimes when the enemy attacks you, you don't lose your combo. Other times, you lose your combo. Seems very random. Nice art and gameplay otherwise, but that randomness kills it for me. Is there something telegraphed that I'm missing?

EDIT: Never mind, the combo meter just disappears when you get attacked, but it's still counting. That tripped me up.

Also, woulda been nice if the timing was on-beat. But hey, it was still pretty fun overall! Characters were cute :)

Blocks by Anubhav Kashyap 2018-08-17T06:39:01Z

Only got 0:48! A bit hard to tell where you're landing and where blocks are coming from, but it plays pretty well.

Roops by Lipsch 2018-08-17T05:46:02Z

Great audio and sound cues, as well as the flashing circles that turn red so you know when you're about to lose. Nicely done. I do wish there was a scoring system at the end! I ended with 50 money and all but 1 parking space purchased. Not sure how good that is.

By the way the music was fantastic.

Escape 2600 by cenullum 2018-08-15T05:42:55Z

I espaced after 6 times! Yeah!

Loved the graphics. Messages on signs ought to pop up faster than they do, though.

Pursuit of Freedom by Lino 2018-08-14T06:11:35Z

I laughed out loud at the intro cutscene with all the dudes standing on the flying Galactic Space Force platform. Great humor! The music was pretty minimalist, but oddly inspiring. I also thought it was hilarious that you had to rock-paper-scissors the security guards.

Made it to past the 2nd checkpoint. Halfway through the third level, I turned around and tried to go back to space but couldn't :(

I swapped A/D with Q/E and found that to be much easier. It took some getting used to the perspective, too. I noticed you had the lighting behind the player, so you could see your own shadow, which helped. Would have liked if I could speed things up--I think I could handle a much faster speed. Maybe let the player control the speed and encourage them to beat it in less time?

Dark Lord Ludum Dare by MartinTristan 2018-08-16T04:36:06Z

Question--does the countdown always go down? I feel like there are some moves I take and the countdown doesn't decrease. I feel dumb, I'm having trouble on the first enemy, hehehe.

Edit: Thanks for the info! I'll give it another go now

Dark Lord Ludum Dare by MartinTristan 2018-08-16T07:47:43Z

I made it to the level with the gap in the middle. Pretty fun and deep, but I couldn't get further. Personally, I was stuck on the first level with the moving knight for way too long. I think the difficulty curve would be gentler if the first awake enemy you encounter shouldn't be able to move and attack in the same turn, just one or the other. Then, you could add that knight that moves+attacks as a later enemy. I also think I'm just really bad at your game, though :)

Sniggle: Savior of Snugs by Iamsodarncool 2018-08-14T07:33:04Z

omg its dance is so cute. I feel bad for laughing at his dead parents, but the cutscenes were really well done.

Sadly, I couldn't actually play it. None of the keys worked, except for the Escape key. I even tried downloading it, but had the same issue. I thought it might have been the Xbox controller I had plugged in, but I unplugged that, restarted the game, and had the same issue :(

We Haul by Swordfish 2018-08-15T05:55:07Z

I got an A but I might have cheated a bit 8) Untitled.png

It was pretty easy to get the furniture to overlap and collide, I ended up stacking multiple tables inside of each other somehow. Creative idea. Music is repetitive though.

...I also realized (after playing) that you can rotate the furniture... whoops

We Haul by Swordfish 2018-08-16T20:57:21Z

@swordfish I'll have to give it another go for an A+ then!

Zombies Hate Fire... by Windowwasher 2018-08-27T08:51:53Z

I seemed to be doing well (maybe 2/3 of the way to the end?) until suddenly I lost because my fire took a bunch of damage in a short period of time. I had no idea where the fire was, or that I even had to protect it at all :\ If you develop this further, you should give the fire more importance--maybe it heals you, or maybe you can light your arrows in it, or maybe it's more obvious when it gets attacked early on so you know to defend it.

Day Three by EdwinGameDev 2018-08-22T17:22:51Z

Pretty simple and fun. Not sure how to win, though. Is it endless?

Data Runner (LD42-Jammer Edition) by acronaut 2018-08-17T05:01:01Z

Okay, once I got it working it played a lot better! But at first, all the controls were inverted. I think if you alt-tab while playing and move the mouse around and then come back, it messes up the controls or something. Not sure exactly. But yeah, all the mouse controls were inverted. The game looks really, and the music suits it well.

LOÜJ by Thomas Lean 2018-08-16T04:06:45Z

I love the parallax and chunky pixels on the title screen! Nice bloom effect. If I had one complaint, it's that it's too easy to dash on accident when you're just a few frames from the ground and meant to jump instead.

395m :(

Definitely coming back to this one.

Overflow by antoined73 2018-08-15T05:02:20Z

Pretty fun, and looked fantastic! The boat handling felt really good. If I had a complaint, it's that it wasn't easy to know how high up I could put people. It also was hard to target the right person (for example, someone was drowning in the water right in front of me but the it picked up someone from the land next to me instead)

I wouldn't call it relaxing, though :)

Volka by Cisco 2018-08-16T02:20:11Z

Could only get 430--takes a while to really grok the controls and when to click and release. Such a simple concept I love that it's a single-button game. Really really fun. Although I think it's a little too strong to click in rapid succession (leaving green dots in a straight line) until you get the red, then clear the line you just made. But I only got 430 with that strat, so maybe it's not so good after all.

Really clever idea!

SpellBounce by Magnega 2018-08-14T07:23:46Z

Played this with a friend (I won!) I liked the character design. Are the characters balanced? Seems like the flames move quicker than the shadow balls when they first launch.

Postman by tulipekoni 2018-08-17T05:34:52Z

I got up to 21. i enjoyed it when the controls cooperated :) By the way, it wasn't immediately clear that you can aim your throw. I also wish I could throw boxes downward, would help clear off the top platforms

A Sinking Feeling by Beard or Die 2018-08-14T05:21:40Z

Nice post processing effects. I pretended I was a mountain goat while playing. The only way out is to down all the poison on the mountaintop at the end 8)

Rush Hour by pillowPillow 2018-08-14T07:40:50Z

The backgrounds were nice, and the jello effect on the yarn balls looked great! I started to get the hang of controlling the cat, then I realized that I could just sit in the top left corner and keep tapping W to basically become untouchable, and I started to abuse that and got bored. I wasn't sure if it went on forever or not, but I didn't make it to the end.

I liked the controls (after getting used to them)--I'd like to see these controls/character applied to other game ideas too!

Rush Hour by pillowPillow 2018-08-14T08:12:19Z

@wxzuir Ah! I'll have to try it out again :)

Space Warehouse by meatpudding 2018-08-17T03:34:10Z

Hey, the empire treated me really well. They gave me a bunch of stuff, took it the next turn, and gave me a bunch of space clams 8) Then another time I played, I was hit by an asteroid immediately on the first round... Space Warehouse giveth and taketh.

I wonder if the RNG element could be toned down a bit. I found myself restarting quite a bit because I ran out of money and couldn't sell anything because their platform was full. I wonder if the Empire items would have a text box when you hover the mouse over them to let you know they're empire goods that can't be sold? I knew empire goods couldn't be sold based off the tutorial, but I wasn't sure what they looked like.

Pretty clever game idea though!

Snobs like it clean! by GentlemenTeaparty 2018-08-14T07:16:24Z

I got to level 40/gen29ish. I think by asking the Devil to make things harder for the Snob, it actually meant there were more enemies and more meat--things were going well until I bought that upgrade.

Pretty funny concept, to be honest. I had fun running around as a lowly peasant cleaning up filth. I enjoyed the gameplay loop until I had all the furnaces. Not sure what to do once I get all the furnaces and upgrades.

Nice work!

Crushed by comenoha 2018-08-17T06:35:20Z

Great combination of a puzzler and a platformer. Really, no complaints other than wall jumping feeling a little off. I'd love to see more!

Horder by Yippiez 2018-08-14T08:22:36Z

I figured out that it's way easier to carry the trash can all the time, then dropping the trash can on top of garbage and immediately picking it up. I'd say it's a bit too easy overall. But pretty relaxing tbh

Quibble Quarrel by TJ101010 2018-08-17T06:08:12Z

Music was good. The punching was satisfying and I liked growing bigger. Great clean graphics. But I think you have an FPS-dependent bug, you couldn't move left/right when playing at 144Hz or 165Hz. I switched to 60 and it ran fine!

Multiplayer when??

Night Shift by TomekS 2018-08-16T07:01:35Z

I liked it, and the forklifts felt both in-control and out-of-control. Nice work. Reminds me of Does Not Commute.

Deity of Destruction by Veilastrum 2018-08-17T04:18:30Z

I think you need some more enemy variety and maybe different energy bar for each weapon to encourage you to switch, or maybe enemy elemental weaknesses to make you switch more. But it definitely felt good and fun using some of those spells and shooting lightning. The screen flashing and particles really sold it. Sound effects would have sealed the deal!

Nice work.

grOw by Sokuaisushi 2018-08-18T22:36:19Z

The background looked really great, as did the particle effects! It was pretty easy once I figured out that the green laser keeps you small :) Now that I've played and rated, I wanna try the extended one but I think it links to the same version as the original.

Hungry Whale by kumabotz 2018-08-14T07:27:41Z

gobbled garbo then died 10/10. I liked the simple mechanics, especially trying to catch the garbage right in your mouth. I was hoping I would spit out all the trash and go back to get more, but alas, the game is more realistic :(

I liked it.

Inventory Wars by saoi-games 2018-08-17T03:56:40Z

Good idea! Easy as first but the difficulty really ramped up and I found myself grabbing a bunch of useless junk.

One suggestion I have to help with clarity: when you pick up an item, it ought to highlight the spots you're able to put them.

Temple of Ungrow by Dovakla 2018-09-01T08:01:51Z

Jump/attaack wouldn't work for me half the time, same as nihilaleph...

Running Out of Space LDJ42 by Ismael Rodriguez 2018-08-15T03:56:40Z

The game feels GREAT to play--the physics and controls were on point. I think the difficulty ramped up a bit too quickly, but after I got the hang of it I managed to score 123. You should keep making this game, and maybe add levels that need to be cleared in addition to the endless mode you have right now.

Did you write the song? The music was great.

Forkin' It Up by Eric Smith 2018-08-17T04:39:34Z

Took a while to get used to the controls, but once I did I felt like a forklift pro. Very satisfying. I liked the minimalistic graphics. If I had one suggestion, it would be to make a bigger penalty to bad driving, like when you run into shelves too quickly. I spent the first half driving my forklift masterfully and precisely before realizing I could just kinda run into shelves and pick stuff up and turn away all while driving forward without needing to back up.

Really fun though. I just think it should be a bit harder. Is it possible to lose? I'm sitting at $41k and stopped to type up this feedback but the game is still running and I haven't lost yet :P

SunnyLand by soumitra.shewale 2018-08-17T06:44:49Z

One quick and easy suggestion to make the platforming feel better is to add variable jump height. For example, if the player releases the jump button while their vertical speed is positive (on the way up), then divide vertical speed by 2.

Moxie by Pohko 2018-08-17T05:23:43Z

I think you've got some framerate dependent logic. I'm running at 165hz and the black screen comes in wayyy to quickly and there aren't enough orbs to counteract it even if you get every single one. I switched my output to 60hz and it seemed more normal.

SHOOTER 3D by prajwal 2018-08-17T04:52:43Z

Ah! I think I got bugged and stuck in some bushes!

R.O.O.M. (Really Obvious Objects Moving) by NorthernDevGuy 2018-08-16T04:50:36Z

I liked the tutorial on the wall, nice way to introduce the controls.

I liked having to play every level twice. Once on the way to the button, kind of like a practice run, the then panicked trip back.

Some suggestions or bugs: 1) It would be nice to have a blob shadow projection below the player. It's kind of hard to judge jumps without it! 2) voice seemed a bit too quiet. 3) Level 10 it wasn't immediately obvious that you had to wait for the platform. I thought it was broken at first 4) I think Level 8 actually broke at one point. The first spiked wall didn't come out on one of my attempts, only the 2nd one did.

But I beat it! The game set the mood really well. Wish I had used a gamepad!

R.O.O.M. (Really Obvious Objects Moving) by NorthernDevGuy 2018-08-16T08:05:05Z

Oh, I also liked the bit of strategy and planning required when deciding when to press the button, based on where the platforms are.

House of Dog by Pizzasgood 2018-08-16T03:40:29Z

I figured it out after reading the help. Reminds of Sim Tower. I almost wish there weren't a time limit and I was free to build a doggo tower at my leisure. I liked it!

O-Shooter by Ktisis 2018-08-15T05:20:17Z

Pretty hard--my high score was only 500. I found it difficult to jump and see where enemies were coming from. But the concept is interesting--having a constantly rotating stage is a cool idea! I think the level could be smaller (or the view could be a bit more zoomed out) and I wish you could jump higher to dodge enemies better. Nice work!

Space Waste by BBApps 2018-08-30T05:36:44Z

It was fun while it lasted! I like the impending doom feeling in that there's no victory, but I also want to play it more, hah.

Endless cleaner by Alidar40 2018-08-15T05:13:07Z

I think I randomly died but the message went away because I was clicking to vacuum up garbage. Not sure how I died. It was funny to scrounge through trash to find batteries that I desperately needed, though.

Trial by Fire by CorgiRam 2018-08-17T05:49:15Z

I like the shine on the sword to let you know when you can attack again! I feel like I died randomly at one point, though. Does something bad happen if you don't defeat the enemies fast enough?

The Maze by nik2434 2018-08-14T05:08:08Z

I keep clicking a planet (so the dotted line appears) and then clicking Travel but nothing happens and I get sucked into the blackness... am I doing something wrong?

Phase Shift by mitjmcc 2018-08-16T04:28:47Z

phase-shift.gif

Hmm, doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm falling right through the floor. Am I doing it wrong?

Phase Shift by mitjmcc 2018-08-16T07:24:42Z

@mitjmcc @nick-shooter I figured it out :) I think you've got a lot of FPS-dependent code (notice how quick your bullets drop and the red checkpoint crystal spins when you change the settings to Lowest). I have a 165Hz monitor. Forcing my GPU to 60Hz fixed it.

Phase Shift by mitjmcc 2018-08-16T07:34:00Z

I liked the character design and graphics. That reload was sweet. It felt like there was some delay when you started moving from a standstill. Clever idea, had fun with it. Nice music choice, too! I wonder if there should be a penalty to continuously firing the matter shot at your feet to stay on the platform, though.

ground_0 by Jamison 2018-08-14T06:16:08Z

@bitdecay Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, the jump is mostly there so you don't get too trapped by the hoppers, or so you can jump between islands if you happen to make them by accident. If you watch my play-through in the YouTube video, I barely jumped at all, so you've got a point. It would be nice if I had a ground-based enemy that you were required to jump over, but considering your projectiles only fire upward, I'm not sure how you'd go about killing it. I'll give it some more thought.

@Araklaj Ah, good idea. Perhaps it should be a separate button? I didn't run into that issue because I typically hold X until fully charged, rather than feathering the key, but I'll think of ways to improve it!

ground_0 by Jamison 2018-08-14T17:19:33Z

@Wxzuir great idea! At the very least, your bullet should destroy enemy bullets in its path! I didn’t think of that but it’d make things more fair.

@scott-purcival Wow, thanks for sticking it out! I’m flattered you found it fun enough to keep with it for so many deaths! Did you find it too hard in general or did it still feel fair? I’m a little worried that the last two levels are too challenging.

ground_0 by Jamison 2018-08-16T03:50:37Z

@lexichan There's a duality of loss-of-space in the game. As you use dirt, you'll form holes and islands, so you run out of space to walk and dodge attacks. At the same time, getting too much dirt on the screen makes it easier to run into the flying enemies, so you're running out of open space above your head.

If I were to develop this further, I think I'd try to balance that duality better. Perhaps there'd be certain enemies that drop a lot of dirt, or certain enemies that destroy a lot of dirt. But you're right, as of now those ideas (too much dirt vs too little dirt) kind of clash in the current build and the theme is a bit muddied.

Thanks for the feedback!

I posted a small update on my itch.io! * @wxzuir Your bullets now destroy enemy bullets. No big explosions, though! * @nick-shooter Your bullets now deflect off the boss when he's invincible. Thanks for the feedback!

ground_0 by Jamison 2018-08-21T08:08:12Z

@vekstr Thanks! I tried my best to make him as expressive as possible with only 2 frames. Well, technically 4 frames, but the silhouette is only 2 frames. I like how goofy it turned out.

@raccoon-js I'm actually considering making a Pico-8 demake of the game, so it'd be even more Atari-esque :)

Laser Racer by Kappinski 2018-08-16T04:22:13Z

Untitled.png

That platforming felt really good. Mid-air control felt just about right. If I had one suggestion, it would be nice to know how close the laser wall is behind you, maybe with a sound or visual indicator. I wasn't sure at the end how much time I could spend waiting to time my jumps.

I loved the transparent laser textures, bloom filter, and motion blur.

Running Out from space to Live by otmani yacer 2018-08-19T19:34:31Z

Having the enemy slow down when he breaks a platform is a great idea. It always makes you feel like he's getting too close to you, but then he slows down and it buys you a little bit of time. Really helps keep things tense but still fair. Having to click to restart was a drag, as were the keyboard presses not working if you held them down when the level started, but those seem like pretty easy fixes.

Rigid Flame by Teo Miklethun 2018-08-14T05:07:30Z

Scored 39! I thought the graphics for the trails were really eye-catching and the core idea was solid and very fitting for the theme! If I had one objective complaint, it would be that you're kind of encouraged to wait and move as little as possible to avoid running out of space, only using fuel when a projectile is about to hit you, and waiting for enemies to group up to get a multi-kill. Does the multiplier go higher than 2x?

Nice work overall!

Rigid Flame by Teo Miklethun 2018-08-14T08:10:24Z

@teo-miklethun Hmm. You could make it much harder to physically stay motionless--have you played around with decreasing the friction? Maybe if you kept a lot more momentum, you'd be forced to make more correction adjustments since you'd be drifting through space. Alternately, maybe you change the default thrusters to be weaker with a smaller trail, and add a dash/boost that moves you quicker and has a bigger trail for defeating enemies... but then again, I do like the simplicity of your game, so I'm worried adding another button/mechanic would get in the way. Plus, there's already a good sense of breakneck speed that I wouldn't wanna change. I dunno! But you're onto something good already!

Shiznipples by Josh Delson 2018-08-14T05:26:11Z

Illustrations were great!

Not sure why some people were upside down  It was hard to get around the rotating people, and some people would spawn inside of me.

Would have liked more levels!

Trade Man: Out of Space by darkmonkey inc 2018-08-15T06:03:10Z

I laughed out loud at the boss and the signs. I wasn't quite sure how to play the game effectively (seemed like luck if you had items in the right category they wanted?) so I got fired

After Halt Mini by croben 2018-08-14T07:51:14Z

The number keys didn't work for me, I had to click them instead. Pretty hard, wasn't sure how to hit the enemies without getting hit myself. Cute graphics, though. Love his run, haha.

Blast Off! by heidelbert 2018-08-14T06:27:15Z

I really liked the background and the particles/effects, especially on the oil tower. I wasn't quite sure what I was doing at first (I actually alt-tabbed back to your description mid-game to study up quickly) but I ended up beating it on my first try.

I wish there were some sound effects and visual feedback so I know how much damage my towers are doing against the oncoming enemies. I also would have liked the screen to only scroll if my mouse were at the edges of the screen, it made it difficult to click through the menus (although I was also playing the WebGL version, which is probably a big laggier than the desktop version)

Nice little tower defense. I liked the added twist that the enemies encroach on your buildable space. Actually made me say "Ah! I'm running out of space!" :P

A nice, bite-sized game. I enjoyed it, maybe in spite of or due to its simplicity. Not sure. But it hit just the right mood.

I'm having the same issue as robowarrior1982, except the game is stuck in borderless-window mode and it's not showing the entire game. I have a 1440p monitor with a second 1024x768 monitor.

Gene Cycle by joh 2020-10-12T17:07:25Z

Very interesting game. I would say the hardest part is when the chains start overlapping each other. I wish I could click and drag in order to "pull" a node to try to clear up some of the visual clutter myself! Also, sometimes I would forget if I had one currently selected, so I would make a link by accident when I thought I was making the first selection. But I think that one's more of a me problem.

I couldn't get more than a score of 4, but I still had fun.

The graphics were nice and clean. I liked the timer circle on each node, and I thought the link/arrow that you drew looked cool.

Gene Cycle by joh 2020-10-14T03:33:04Z

@joh Ah, I'll have to try it out again knowing about right click now :) Nice work overall, it's a solid package for a game jam game.

Loop Heart by NeithR 2020-10-08T02:59:03Z

Pretty fun for a bit! It did get stale partway through, through. Having to move the mouse seemed a little unnecessary, considering there are only 4 directions to shoot in. I wish there was an option to use the arrow keys or WASD to shoot.

I liked that there wasn't too much pressure, but I think having a limit to the number of shots you could fire would give the game some difficulty that it currently lacks.

Very cute art with a nice color scheme. It's an interesting concept that I could see you expanding on later!

Loop Heart by NeithR 2020-10-10T05:59:57Z

Oh, I meant an ammo limit, like for a hard level you can only fire 10 bullets but there are 5 targets, so you can't miss too much. But it's up to you!

Hoop Knight by lectvs 2020-10-06T05:39:36Z

Wow, this was fantastic!

First, just to get the negative out of the way: the WASD was murder on my fingers. This game would benefit from analog stick or mouse controls for movement.

Otherwise? The story was cute. The cutscenes are great! The telegraphing was so fair. The battle at the end was perfectly executed, and really tasked you with mastering the hoop mechanic to aim properly.

I noticed that sometimes I could get bounce and get multiple hits. I wonder if there's an easy way to slam the same enemy left-right-left with the hoop as it bounces and changes directions. I'd practice more, but my fingies need a rest.

A+ stuff here.

a Damsel a Day by alec 2020-10-05T23:34:58Z

20 days!

Great, juicy animations. I loved the tree sway, the transitions, and the character animations. The game-over music is pretty dang good. Makes me feel bad for losing, lol.

Good job setting the mood with a story, too. Very cute.

However, I think it's a little too simple to hold your attention for more than one or two attempts. I would have liked to see some way of interacting with the train or tracks, maybe with switches or something. But hey, nice work.

Dude Ranch by ColeSlaughter 2020-10-06T06:24:53Z

Score: 2154!

This game made me laugh out loud. Really fun! I cracked up at the sight of the golden dude, too.

I'm so happy somebody else had the lasso idea :) You and I went in quite the different direction, though. Dude Ranch... bahahaha. Such a funny idea. Really nice character art. The cowboy is a horse. I'm still smiling from this game.

Good stuff, good stuff.

Race The Loops by vinzBad 2020-10-06T06:32:19Z

Nice, clean aesthetic. I feel like you'd have a good rhythm game on your hands if you put some music over this and had each loop time with the music!

Do-While-For by primitive-concept 2020-10-08T03:56:22Z

I've had it load for me and come into game, but none of the controls you mentioned work :(

POKKO by gord10ahmet 2020-10-06T06:14:04Z

Nice, cohesive feel to this game. Great graphics, good music. It wasn't very obvious why my clone would disappear, because I kept grabbing the gameboy first. But then I figured it out, and got the hang of it. The puzzles through level 5 were a little easy and uninteresting, though.

Overall, good aesthetics.

Loopy Boy by rex64 2020-10-06T06:07:12Z

Felt like I was chasing the tempo bar to put in the right command at the right time with a click-then-unclick, almost like I was using a weirdly-timed on-screen keyboard to control it. I think forcing the player to program out and not edit on the fly would be a good change to make. Or, perhaps, limit how many times they can remove/place after hitting play, like it's a "power" that you have to conserve!

Good ideas here, though.

Roundabout Way by Quandtm 2020-10-06T05:24:29Z

I got 32:40. A little easy, only crashed once. But I thought this controlled really, really nicely and intuitively. I thought it would make me dizzy at first, but I made it out okay.

Pretty chill music, too!

ME! vs the unrelenting alien invasion by Human Writes Code 2020-10-27T17:31:56Z

Hey, this was pretty fun! I liked the extra complexity of having to avoid shooting your own moon/earth, too. Nice Missile Command feel to it. I think my only complaint is that there's not enough audible feedback when you hit your own moon/earth with one of your missiles, so half the time I didn't even notice I was hitting myself when I was shooting volleys at the enemies!

Anyway, it had fun good writing, nice simple and effective graphics... and that bass was slappin'!

Hamsta's Paradise by brookman 2020-10-14T17:39:38Z

Cute graphics, nice camera, and good concept!

The turning was, as others mentioned, a little wonky. It makes sense that you'd turn slower while at a standstill and faster while moving, but it seemed that turning while at a standstill would fluctuate between turning quickly and turning slowly, as if it's getting caught on something.

Also, maybe I was expecting the steering to mimic that of a car, but reversing while turning felt backwards. I don't think everyone would have that issue, though, it's probably just me.

This almost reminded me of Super Monkey Ball! The fact that you can't turn well when up against walls and in tight corners makes me think that the gameplay would be better-suited to more open levels where you can build up some speed, rather than maneuvering in tight quarters. But what I played was fun and nicely polished!

Pig-em-Up: Lassos Are Loops, Too! by Jamison 2020-10-09T06:11:30Z

Thanks for the kind words and feedback so far, all!

@daimadoushi Good thinking about the tutorial!

@nikolai-shkurkin Ahh, thanks for the feedback, I want to make a better HUD that makes it more obvious. The pig actually does flash and jump when you take damage, but I could make it last longer and make it more obvious.

@piscythe Running into an obstacle while being dragged deals damage to yourself (this wasn't obvious at all, sorry!). So, jumping lets you jump over a cactus or box to avoid it, but still have the ~~cowboy~~ pigboy you're dragging hit it. Speaking of the dynamite, I feel like I made it way too easy to stack the cowboys and blow them up with multiple dynamites. I'll have to think about how to fix that. At the very least, a cowboy shouldn't drop his own dynamite directly at his own feet, maybe it should fly back further.

Pig-em-Up: Lassos Are Loops, Too! by Jamison 2020-10-09T06:12:18Z

@daniel-whittaker I was making some quick placeholder art, and a pig requires less detail than a cow. Then... I just stuck with the pig and never re-drew it

Pig-em-Up: Lassos Are Loops, Too! by Jamison 2020-10-09T06:20:33Z

@coleslaughter Your game was awesome! But yeah, the flinging mechanic especially needs work. You can't fling the cowboy again until he lands, but it takes so long for him to land, and he kinda teleports around so quickly. I might try to add more momentum and buildup of speed, so that the flings feel more deserved, but I'll need to make the arenas a little larger. Or do you like being able to fling him back and forth repeatedly?

Pig-em-Up: Lassos Are Loops, Too! by Jamison 2020-10-09T06:24:34Z

@kack3y Yes, I didn't explain that at all, my bad... there are two ways to take damage: 1. dynamite explosions 2. hitting cacti or barrels while the pig is auto-running (from being lassoed)

Pig-em-Up: Lassos Are Loops, Too! by Jamison 2020-10-27T17:37:47Z

@vrerabek Thanks for the kind words! I'll let you know when I upload the post-jam version :)

@dizzy Thanks for playing! Yep, a last minute tweak to the trajectory of the dynamite made it fall right at their feet. I've already fixed that for my post-jam version (which I have yet to publish).

@guilhermesouza @floata-1 Yay, I'm glad the inspirations showed through! Definitely inspired by games like TMNT IV for SNES and Streets of Rage for Genesis/MegaDrive

@matterox Good thinking, I had the same idea but that was one of the first ideas to hit the chopping block for time reasons.

Pig-em-Up: Lassos Are Loops, Too! by Jamison 2020-10-27T17:39:33Z

@iron-leonem Thanks for the feedback. That's definitely not something I thought about, but I'll keep in mind in the future. Could you please explain the technical errors when the game ends? Does the sound glitch out when a game-over happens? And what version did you play? Thanks for the info!

Bulldozer Loop by Darkemerald 2020-10-07T19:30:16Z

Took me a while to figure out that you controlled it with WASD.

Gotta be honest, I have no idea what I'm doing. I just went to the arrow block right away in each level and then it was over.

Wall-A Project by Martin.Delemotte 2020-10-27T17:18:12Z

I'm not really sure what I'm doing. As soon as I plant a seed, the level restarts.

Wall-A Project by Martin.Delemotte 2020-10-27T17:23:11Z

Oh, I see now. My eyes were drawn to the "rubble" that slows him down, and I didn't even notice the purple flower elsewhere. I kept trying to place the seed on the rubble to make him turn around before hitting it.

I think on the third or fourth level, the way I want to solve it doesn't work. The robot simply turns around. I wasn't even aware that he could turn around. I didn't end up solving it because it took too long to iterate on my solutions, for two reasons.

1. It takes some time for the level to reset if you mess up placing one of your seeds, but still have at least 1 seed. It would be nice to have a restart button! 2. Even if you know what you're doing, it can take some time waiting for the robot to drive in the circle. Being able to speed it up would be a godsend!

I like the concept as a puzzler, but I just couldn't get into it for the above reasons. But I loved the graphics and the aesthetic!

Loopita's Dream by vetu11 2020-10-06T05:53:00Z

Oh my god. That was so cute. Such good background music. I loved the way the track changes as you run.

I think I killed poor thing, though.

Spectre Circuit by Theg 2020-10-07T19:24:44Z

Sorry, I like the idea, but I feel like I broke the game. There's no incentive to go fast, just to go *faster than last time*, so if you go as sloooooooooooooowwwwwwlllllyyyyy as possible, you can get a higher score.

I tried again, this time forcing myself to go fast, but I lost on my second lap, which downgraded my turning, but then my steering controls just outright broke and I could no longer turn... like, at all.

The graphics are pleasant, though! The track was really smooth and the 3D car (or pseudo-3D, can't tell) looks really cool.

Spectre Circuit by Theg 2020-10-08T02:34:55Z

@theg I'm pretty sure it was 60.

Ah nice, the car turned out great. What was your pipeline for going from 3D -> voxel -> sprite layers?

Btw, I ended up playing a few more times and forced myself to go fast, and it's definitely much more fun that way.

The Titan's grave by BadPiggy 2020-10-06T06:02:39Z

The art style instantly grabbed me! Interesting attack patterns!

Phase 3 was more like a war of attrition, since he could only really be damaged during one of this three attacks. My fingers started to hurt and then I died :( I did enjoy that it was very lenient in taking damage in order to find a winning strategy / pattern (loop, dare I say?) to use against the boss.

Maybe add some different colored tiles bordering on the stage so you know when you're about to back up to the edge of the map? I dodged backwards into an invisible wall a few times.

Nice work.

RESCUE ATTEMPT #[REDACTED] by Junebug 2020-10-12T17:14:27Z

I beat it with a score of 198. I'm pretty sure that's how many enemies you've defeated, but I thought it was more fun to just dash and double-jump over all the enemies and pretty much speed-run it. The movement was more fun than the combat, in my opinion. Anyway, solid entry, and I'd say it's just the right length! Nice aesthetics, by the way. The music, although simple, fit quite well and I appreciated it.

Milk Store by Dinoraz 2020-10-09T05:56:55Z

I beat it 6 times, but the only thing that changed was one time the money was in a and I had to take two to the at the store instead. I see from your comment now that it's RNG based, which might explain why 5 of my runs were identical otherwise. I'd like to see more, I just wish it was in a set order!

Game was pretty clean overall.

Was able to drive a car inside, too xD
