LD42 — Running out of space

PistonBreak by Gipzo 2018-08-16T20:23:40Z

Nice and simple, very polished, the graphical style reminds me of N. Simple but effective.

Skeleport by thristhart 2018-08-17T22:54:35Z

Very fun and engaging game, music is really great and goes with the pacing really well.

I only have some minor gripes that were a little frustrating, movement felt really sluggish for what became a bullet hell and I swear that I watched my bullets go straight through the cultists multiple times. Those are really minor polish things though, I'm amazed that you managed to get a full game like this out in just 3 days and a really fun one too.

I'm TOTALLY not a clicker! by maartene 2018-08-16T19:28:37Z

The music is nice, it might get annoying after quite some time but not immediately at least. I would call it more of a swiper than a clicker, I didn't really do much clicking but I guess that's good for a not clicker. A little short though, why stop the game after the last block? Pretty fun overall.

Hydrogenic by Gabe 2018-08-13T05:41:20Z

Very polished feeling, the little screen shake on a jump is really good. I found it a little hard to tell where exactly I was going to land after a jump though, maybe a line across would be nice. It could just be my awful lack of spatial awareness though.

Brightly-Wrapped Boxes by incobalt 2018-08-18T00:09:32Z

I like the idea and the distance on the audio was a nice touch. The graphics are okay, nothing very exciting though, and others have mention the movement is weird. I heard some coughing in the background at one point, seeing as you're at a party it would have been nice to hear some conversations that would add to the humor.

The Consumer by foolmoron 2018-08-17T21:59:24Z

This is probably the most interesting game I've seen so far, I don't think it fits the theme very well though and I felt like I was mostly just guessing at what the correct formatting was.

With a little polishing it could be really good I think.

Escape from the tentacles by xilentor 2018-08-16T21:27:27Z

The voxel graphics are really nice, super tough on the harder difficulties. I really like the feel of it and wow, does it get overwhelming fast once it gets through the first area!

It would have been nice if there was some kind of music or sound effects, but I didn't run into any bugs and it was very polished so I'll forgive that.

Really great job overall.

Pillar by arcadonauts 2018-08-15T05:05:52Z

As other have mentioned already, that first sound is pretty frighting when you aren't expecting it, maybe some background music on the title screen and you'd be prepared for more sounds.

I wasn't expecting this to be an almost puzzle game, but it works really well. The little cube man is pretty cute and overall it's a really fun arcade game. The only downfall is the sound really, some sort of theme rather than just effects would have been nice.

ROOSTER EXPRESS by Fran Segura 2018-08-16T19:55:38Z

Super fun little game, with some more story and variation I can see this as a game I would play regularly. Great art, I love how the labels wrap around the corners of the boxes and it has a really nice almost animal crossing feel to it.

It gets pretty chaotic pretty fast, and I love it.

A really great entry overall, solid contender to win I think.

6 K by pataya 2018-08-17T23:41:11Z

Very well done, very polished feeling and looking, very nice art and the music really adds to the tension. My only gripe is that I feel like without the music there wouldn't be any tension, it would have been nice if the enemies did something other than make a straight beeline for you. Maybe even giving some more spawn points other than the corners would break them up a bit.

Rampart by Jeremy Ryan 2018-08-13T05:09:46Z

Wow, loving the art, and that floating effect is so smooth. I'm definitely going to have a look at the code for that. How many surfaces are there? Is it just one for the background and one for the arena? Or is the arena loaded as a sprite so you can move it easily? Or is it all in the camera work?

I always like to see what other people do with pygame.

Rampart by Jeremy Ryan 2018-08-14T01:53:40Z

@jeremy-ryan well I'd say that worked out pretty well, the parallax really adds to the feel. 4 pids might be a little overkill, but the camera is very smooth because of it.

I've been working on my own extension to pygame for a little while now too, https://github.com/FRadford/pygame-systems not nearly as nice a name though. It looks like I've taken a pretty different approach from you; no pids in my camera :( and quite a few more sprite classes. I don't know if I need them all though, I only really use two of them.

And if you do have a look at my game, I'll warn you it's not nearly as polished as this and I am no artist; or composer for that matter.

Amazing Deliveries by Mister X 2018-08-17T23:30:06Z

Nice and simple, pretty fun though I didn't really feel like I was running out of space. The graphics are pretty basic but functional, some music to set the tone would have been nice. I didn't really feel any sense of urgency.

ENOCH'S SALT by KRP 2018-08-13T05:12:22Z

Very atmospheric for sure, the sound really adds to it too. All the little things come together really well.

Shipping Fast by Shane 2018-08-15T04:45:19Z

Interesting take on the theme; some kind of a hectic warehouse management jumping game. But the execution didn't really come together, because jumping is so important it would have been really nice if it was snappy and weighty feeling rather than the float-y "I'm not really sure how high I'm jumping" effect that it currently has.

I'm not sure the top-down perspective really works either, it makes it difficult to tell exactly how high each stack is. Maybe even a 2D tetris like board would have been better. This feels more like an early prototype unfortunately, it really could use some polishing.

I really like the idea overall, lots of people did warehouse games but none of ones I've seen took a more abstract clearing method like this. It falls a little flat right now though.

Shipping Fast by Shane 2018-08-15T05:10:56Z

@shane I've seen at least one VR submission so far, it's allowed as far as I know. I think the major problem there is that most people don't have a headset to play it with so getting enough ratings would be pretty tricky. That would exclude me at least.

CLAMPRESSOR File Archiver by Deaymon 2018-08-17T21:34:50Z

Fun gameplay for sure, though it would have been nice to match more than three or match vertically. The graphics could be improved but they're functional and I like how happy the clamp gets when you combine things.

Reading through the other reviews nobody seems to have mentioned it, but for me at least the audio was crackly and almost like it was playing in slow-motion. I've had that happen before with other games but only if it's running at 2fps or something. The gameplay was smooth but the audio wasn't. Other than that though it seemed like pretty good music.

NOOR by PNghasemi 2018-08-15T04:18:56Z

The art, the animation and the sound design are all amazing and together they make the mood really great, but it almost seems like you had an idea for a different theme and just went with it anyway. I can see this fitting much better with light is key or even safe in the dark, with some modification.

Aside from that I found myself dying just from being in the dark unintentionally way more often than anything else, and overall the shooting mechanic felt a little unnatural; I had trouble shooting the lights exactly where I wanted them. Because it's so important, it made the whole game feel a little off.

That said, I really liked the NPC's personalities, it is a mechanic I've never seen before and I absolutely have to give it 5/5 in both graphics and audio.

We Haul by Swordfish 2018-08-13T04:27:37Z

@swini Thanks! Do you mean the text on the end screen? It was pretty rushed since it was the last thing that got finished, it is a little uninspired for sure.

@eric-kulbiej Thanks! I'd say it's pretty good for a first attempt, getting the collisions pixel perfect gave me a lot of grief yesterday but it worked out eventually.

@rytannic Thank you as well, the music probably suffered most from being rushed. What it ended up being is an early placeholder that was going to be replaced, but so much for that.

Good to see no horrible bugs so far!

We Haul by Swordfish 2018-08-14T01:44:24Z

My first idea always tends to be the best, I had a few others rolling around but eventually I came back to this one.

Very valid complaints, the physics ended up a little janky, the plan was to add in some smaller shapes so you could fill in some of the smaller gaps (though with the current physics that might just cause more problems), and I think I only spent all of five minutes on the audio so it does get pretty repetitive.

I think I could have managed my time a lot better honestly, I spent probably far too much time on the truck and the collisions took me far longer to figure out than they should have. I wish I could have spent more time on the sound but I really left it to the last minute, I would have liked it to be more polished but it is what it is. Overall a pretty successful first attempt I think.

We Haul by Swordfish 2018-08-16T19:09:06Z

@thechubbypanda, @luis-giron, @popdaddygames Thank you all, glad you enjoyed it.

@shane That's a bit odd, are they different resolutions maybe? The idea is that it sets the resolution to that of your monitor. It runs fine with my 2 monitor setup but they are the same resolution.

If you're really committed you could change ``` self.screen = pygame.display.set_mode((monitor_info.current_w, monitor_info.current_h), pygame.FULLSCREEN)``` on line 27 of main.py to say ``` self.screen = pygame.display.set_mode((800, 400))``` And then it won't try to open fullscreen, but if you don't already have python installed that might be a little overkill.

@darkmonkey-inc what OS is your computer running? I might be able to help.

@jamison That's great, *do you think you could get an A+?* I'm not entirely sure why you can place objects inside of others, I noticed that as well while I was testing it but it was too late to fix anything unfortunately. Music is very repetitive, I probably should have opted out of that category honestly. I wasn't aiming for greatness and I'm no musician to begin with so 😋.

@hungare *Here at We Haul everyone is a world class mover, regardless of whether or not anything makes it through the move intact.* Jokes aside, Thanks! I would have liked to have made the music progress more slowly, so that the tension would build up a little slower; but clearly it had the intended effect anyway, which is good. I agree that the overall feel is a little off and the collisions are pretty screwy sometimes. I think a bunch more smaller items to really fill all the nooks and crannies would help make it a little more fun, but I never got the chance sadly 😭.

We Haul by Swordfish 2018-08-16T21:07:46Z

@armadillq Thanks! I tried my best to make them fit nicely together, though I probably should have made the chair legs a little thinner so you could fit a small box or crate under there.

@fluffy-kaeloky Thanks, in retrospect it might have been better to just leave out the background music; I'm not sure.

@jamison I'm not convinced it's possible but try your best!

We Haul by Swordfish 2018-08-17T21:38:54Z

@krp Thank you, that was the idea so I'm glad to see it worked out

@mike-inprinciple I'd say it's more like one bug that's very prevalent but yes, I'm aware that happens. I think it's due to the nature of the collision system I'm using, if you happen to move an object far enough into another it will clip to the other side of that object regardless of whether or not there's another object in the way. I'm not sure if I'm going to fix, seeing as it isn't really game breaking.

We Haul by Swordfish 2018-08-19T21:52:43Z

@ocekat3, @cristihkj, @hueson Thank you so much!

@adonisdevs, @dimesto52 The original idea was to have some other levels, but here we are. Same goes for the music really, time always seems to go faster when you're trying to get something done.

@max-cahill It really is never a good idea to rush a move, but where's the fun in that? I was planning on adding a lot of smaller items so you can fill small spaces easier and quicker, I think that might have helped with the difficulty. I could have always made the grades more lenient as well, but I like the idea of basically always getting a terrible rating. Getting to a few more features would have been nice...

@darkguardsman How slow is amazingly slow exactly? It takes about 10 seconds on my machine, which I'll admit is slower than some of the other entries here but it doesn't seem that long to me. I probably spent too long getting the graphics how I liked them and not nearly enough on the music, hindsight's 20/20 though. I think the main issue with the controls arises from mouse collisions being checked against the bounding box of an object rather than pixel perfect. Unfortunately after you pack everything into the truck pixel perfect, bounding boxes overlap and it checks collisions from the top of a list so it often ends up choosing the wrong object. In hindsight q and e would have probably been much better rotation keys but I wasn't using them anyway since I'd been testing with the scrollwheel so the thought never crossed my mind.

@fork0 collisions need work and not nearly enough time was spent on music, but it was a learning experience overall.

@ekilibr Yeah, I probably could have made the controls more obvious, or added some kind of reference in the game itself. I'm lucky there's even a title screen though.

@kromeboy That's a safe way to pack a truck for sure, the collision really do need work as I mentioned earlier I probably should have made the selection collisions pixel perfect as well. I'm not sure how much of a performance hit that would be though.

We Haul by Swordfish 2018-08-26T12:15:53Z

@darkguardsman nearly 3 minutes is pretty slow, I only really use 7zip so I never noticed that. I wonder why it's so much slower.

@max-cahill I think I'm going to try and Polish it up and release either a mobile or Web version. Ive never actually done either with python, but I'm sure there's a way. And thanks for playing!

@predominant I'm with you on the mobile game, with a few tweaks I think it could work quite well. Thanks for playing

Running out of Platforms by Fork0 2018-08-17T23:50:18Z

Pretty fun little game, sort of like a reverse breakout. The graphics could use a little work and the sound is a little repetitive but the gameplay is interesting and the platforms are a nice mechanic. I think it would have been better if the platforms that you fall through stuck around instead of disappearing, then you could use them as a sort of shield something like space invaders.

Space Hoarder by Leandro Dotta 2018-08-15T04:55:41Z

I like the concept and the art is fairly nice, but as others mentioned it's a little confusing at first. Some music would have really helped with the mood I think.

Overall pretty fun, I found it really easy but that's more of a personal note; I don't think the gauge ever filled past half.

Package Man by Armadillq 2018-08-16T19:36:36Z

I had almost exactly the same idea, great minds think alike I guess. Maybe it wasn't quite as original as I thought, pretty good game though. It would have been nice to be able to jump into the truck to reposition the boxes. And the graphics and the audio could use some work.

Fun idea, but it could have been executed a little better.

P.S. Mine isn't executed well either...

Plasma Destruction Legion by Zombie Virals 2018-08-17T22:15:54Z

The audio is good, the graphics are good, the controls feel a little loose but it is reasonably fun to play. The theme is there but it doesn't really feel like it has a big impact.

Pretty decent entry overall, could use some improvement though.

Temple of Ungrow by Dovakla 2018-08-16T20:14:25Z

Pretty good entry I'd say, I really like that the character grows but the world around doesn't. That allows for some really good puzzles if you continue with this. The graphics aren't that great though honestly.

I didn't actually get very far through the game so I can't comment on any of the later stuff but the first minute or so was pretty good. I ran into a bug in the trial of speed, I got stuck inside the upper platform after I fell down into the area with the bowling balls (?), when I went to jump out I could go through the walls into the platform but I couldn't get out after that. After a few attempts I gave up.

Temple of Ungrow by Dovakla 2018-08-16T20:28:08Z

@dovakla Yeah, I figured I would start with the most immediate one first. It doesn't seem to be an issue for the walls at the bottom of the pit just the ones higher up. When you jump to try and get out you can go through the walls higher up.

Hopefully that helps, I'll give it another shot and check out the other trials.

Temple of Ungrow by Dovakla 2018-08-16T21:03:24Z

@dovakla I ended up beating the speed trial and the piano trial but I couldn't finish the strength trial. Once I was at the 2nd size from beating both the other trials, I tried to pick the key up and it just fell through the floor. Restarting the room had no effect.

The three trials can be accomplished in any order but there is obviously an optimal sequence, it probably should have just been a linear experience.

Also at first I was confused by the black spheres at the end of the level, I eventually figured out to hit them but some indication would have been nice.

A little unpolished overall but there are some really great ideas in there.

Running Out of Space LDJ42 by Ismael Rodriguez 2018-08-17T21:18:24Z

Really good feel to this game, good music, good art, and great gameplay work really well together. The robot is really cute though it would have been nice to see some kind of a background.

Pretty good across the board and I had a lot of fun, though I'm pretty bad at it lol.

Demonic Digestion by DodoIta 2018-08-17T23:20:04Z

The art is really nice, but after a while I found the music a little repetitive. Gameplay is pretty fun and using your enemies against a larger enemy is an interesting idea. Though I'm not sure it fits the theme very well, just being a bullet hell in of itself doesn't seem like enough to me.

I also ran into the big skeleton not spawning after the first game, if you're wondering.

Never run out of SPACE: a ZIP folders journey by Swini 2018-08-15T03:51:30Z

I like the look of this game and it's a very good first entry, but the real sticking point for me is the change from level 1 to 2. We go from avoiding blocks of data at risk of restarting the level to jumping on them to get to the end? And on top of that there's no way to differentiate the blocks that will bounce you from those that won't because all the blocks up until that point have been different colours but served the same purpose. That transition is very confusing at first and though I jumped on the block right away to see if anything had changed it really just left a bad taste in my mouth.

The story is a nice addition and it makes for a coherent experience though there are a few spelling errors. I think with a few more sprites or even more meaningful colours you could eliminate that confusion and it make it even better.

Castle Z by Erick Alves 2018-08-15T04:23:42Z

It looks like your link is broken, I'm not seeing a download anywhere on your gamejolt page :(

Wow! That's a big hole! by LuppaTeam 2018-08-17T23:58:55Z

Pretty fun game, getting more money the more enemies there are is a nice mechanic that pushes you to play more dangerously. I'm personally not a fan of the graphics but some people might like them, I found the sound design really good.

Pretty good overall, I liked it.

Mindlapse by Vulture_42 2018-08-17T21:49:01Z

The art is really great, I'm curious though; did you digitally model the characters or actually build them out of clay and then photograph them?

The music is really unsettling and it really adds to the mood though the gameplay gets a little boring after a while frankly. There isn't really any sense of urgency to keep me engaged.

Overall really great, and really innovative either way you did the art I've never seen anything like it.

Mindlapse by Vulture_42 2018-08-17T22:17:23Z

@vulture-42 wow, that most have been a lot of effort! Turned out pretty great though.

LD46 — Keep it alive

For the king! by OfirMa85 2020-04-20T05:21:12Z

Really solid tower defense, this is the game I've played longest so far. The pixel art is nice, and the music was actually quite good. My only gripe is the tower design was a little lackluster and didn't really fit with the medieval theme.

Herb! by Swordfish 2020-04-20T03:40:29Z

Thanks for the feedback, as far as some of your issues - I think the spawning of everything is a little bit off. Mostly a last minute thing, was working with a smaller map before and when I scaled it up it got weird. The hitboxes could use some tweaking too, the herb one is probably too small.

Glad you all enjoyed it, I like having fun with these, nothing too serious.

Herb! by Swordfish 2020-04-20T04:33:23Z

That is definitely not supposed to happen, but hey maybe the village is very hungry. It was supposed to double for the second level so not sure what went wrong.

Herb! by Swordfish 2020-04-20T19:35:04Z

@logan-perkins @mhykah @forevertrash

I found the bug causing the resource counts to go insane - as long as you are on the splash screen between levels the level counter increases every tick. This causes the resource requirements to grow exponentially as it's just the numbers from the first level multiplied by the level count.

I'll be uploading a fixed version soon but there isn't any reason to play it again as nothing really changes past that point, you'll see the same splash at the end of every level and the resource requirements increase again.

I also fixed the spawning I think, animals should spawn over the whole map now, they were only spawning in the top left before.

Herb! by Swordfish 2020-04-20T19:35:09Z

New version is up!

Penguin March by ilPrinny 2020-04-20T04:31:02Z

Managed to make it to the end with 60 odd penguins left. Much more fun than I was expecting and the penguins are cute.

Wavering Divinity by Brandon JS Lea 2020-04-20T04:16:31Z

Very interesting concept, well executed and polished. Would be nice if there was a little more to it though.

Ignited by The Blue Hatted 2020-04-20T04:23:11Z

I'm amazed you managed an online game in such a short time, fun gameplay too.

Night fire 🔥 by Glavak 2020-04-20T03:52:05Z

Graphics are nice, wish there were more things to throw in the fire. Mushrooms were cool though.

LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Mars Cave Explorer by OddballDave 2021-05-16T00:07:41Z

The movement was an interesting take, I think that's what really makes the game work. I found it a little bit frustrating how easy it was to take damage especially considering that the movement is hard to be precise with. Maybe it should be based on velocity so you don't wreck your ship trying to get off the ground. The graphics were easy to read, if a little simple and the music helped the mood for sure.

Tunnel48 by Geckoo1337 2021-04-26T19:01:51Z

Cool game. I thought it was really fun to play, I like that you could flip to the other side of the tube and run out there. I like the graphics generally, but found the repeating grey checkerboard a little hard on the eyes. I thought your music fit the game pretty well. May play this a bit more to try to get higher on the leader board :)

Deepz Explorez by khaotom 2021-04-26T03:11:13Z

I found the sound really compelling. It felt like it was coming out of the trees and rocks, which was very cool. I thought it was fun to play and had a satisfying ending. Not overly complex, but I probably wouldn't have been able to solve a maze like that anyway so, probably for the best.

Malleus Pistrium by piscythe 2021-05-16T00:48:02Z

I enjoyed that a lot, I see you opted out of music but I did want to mention that it added a lot to the mood of the fight (the more epic one that is, not so much the carnival sounding track). I was happy to see that there were more phases to the fight after the first one because I found that one a little boring.

There were a few weird things though, I've never seen a program display the way this one did, the full height of my screen got letterboxes but not the width? I also noticed a lot of errors in the debug console - looks like you didn't connect up the particles when the player takes damage right.

Screenshot 2021-05-15 204145.png

Overall enjoyable!

Layered World by hiki911 2021-04-26T18:34:21Z

I think this in an interesting idea. I sort of like that it seems you're doomed from the start. You probably could have worked on adding a bit more randomization into the game, a improvement in my mind would be to add more types of square with different rewards or even penalties. The graphics looked nice, but some sort of sound would have been good. It is a pretty good game, but with some improvements it could be great.

Layered World by hiki911 2021-04-26T19:07:55Z

@hiki911 I totally understand, time makes us have to sacrifice lots. Hope I didn't diminish the work you must have put in. Just some ideas :)

Downslide by pabulum 2021-04-28T21:30:30Z

Fun little game, I would have put attack on the down arrow though, that's what I instinctively went for. The color shifting is a nice touch.

Daré Fortress by luthwyhn 2021-05-16T00:22:05Z

I got through a about four seasons before it crashed as well, not sure why wasn't running it in command prompt so it just closed :(

Real ambitious to recreate DF in a weekend so kudos for that, I think you got the main things in, there's so much more to add if you do continue.

Boneitis - Quest for the Cure by patvanmackelberg 2021-04-26T03:36:30Z

I think this was a really well put together game. My only real complaint is that the cure is almost completely unattainable. Maybe this was part of the joke of the game. I got all of the upgrades but 100,000 gold is crazy. Also what exactly did the iron pick do? Didn't really find anything changed after I got it.

Deepest Sword by Strega 2021-04-28T22:12:45Z

Well, that was great. I really have nothing to contribute, the last level was really hard but if that's what you were going for then you nailed it.

Easily the best game I've played so far.

Codename::GreyHat by Train27 2021-04-28T18:52:28Z

That was really interesting, I eventually figured it out and got the good ending. Really liked that the company was trying to get you to frame someone. It reminds me a lot of a mobile game I played years ago I think it was called hack run or something?

It would have been nice to see some quality of life improvements like command history and auto-complete but overall really nicely done.

Oiligarch by dxk2294 2021-04-29T00:03:10Z

Very nice, I'm sure this would have made a very successful flash game back when those were a thing. Graphics are simple but they really work, nice and clean, the background music is really nice, though I'm not a fan of the really loud foghorn on the tankers.

Would have been nice if you could easily see how many trucks and tankers you were sending to a city on on its page, I found it a bit difficult to manage.

SPEKS - A Murder Mystery by Swordfish 2021-04-26T03:18:09Z

@seafishelle Thanks for your feedback. I was really sort of debating how fast to scroll the text at the start. Had in mind retro future stuff like the terminals in Alien. If I had more time would have added the ability to skip through it. It makes sense that the code tags were sort of immersion breaking to you. Again it was an area I was debating and I felt that it added to the old terminal aesthetic. But, I guess that is really a personal preference thing. And your totally right about the bar, but oh well.

@kristinamay Thanks for the comment. I am getting the feeling that the consensus is that the text crawl is too slow, lol.

SPEKS - A Murder Mystery by Swordfish 2021-04-26T03:40:30Z

@spydercrawler Thanks for the feedback. Didn't want to make it too easy :)

@pixelhurricane Seems to be most people think the intro is to long. I would agree. I am not sure if that counts as a bug to change though. Oh well. Thanks for playing and I hope you do find the killer.

SPEKS - A Murder Mystery by Swordfish 2021-04-26T03:58:14Z

@jibberwocky Thanks for the feedback. Really glad you liked it. I put a lot of time into trying to get the story and characters to mesh well.

SPEKS - A Murder Mystery by Swordfish 2021-04-26T04:39:43Z

@rhoff95 Thanks, I totally agree at this point that the slow crawl was not the right choice. I also get the want to get through it quick, so, upon reflection other choices should have been made.

SPEKS - A Murder Mystery by Swordfish 2021-04-26T16:15:11Z

@pd-dev @cavedens Yeah, I probably should have halved or even quartered that time, I would have liked to have added a way to skip it too. But honestly since that's the only criticism I've seen so far I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

SPEKS - A Murder Mystery by Swordfish 2021-04-28T17:06:44Z

@train27 Thanks for playing! I really wanted to make four or five reactions for each character, I think that would have added a lot, but I just didn't have time in the end :(

Yeah, the character names... I thought it would be funny if they all had names starting with the same letter but it was hard for me even to keep track of them all, maybe not the best choice lol.

The reactivity bar doesn't do anything, initially I wanted to have some triggers linked to it but when I realized how much dialogue I had to write already they got cut. So in the end it was just a way to see how they react to your questions, if it spikes a lot on an innocuous seeming answer, they're probably lying.

I'll have to check out your game too :)

SPEKS - A Murder Mystery by Swordfish 2021-04-28T22:52:32Z

@dhim Thanks, In general I wanted to make sure that it wasn't immediately straightforward who the murderer was so I made sure to add some competing motives, red herrings, and plausible explanations for each of the suspects. Overall I wanted the player to have to dig through multiple layers of lies to find the truth and catch the real culprit.

With that in mind, I created a loose outline of the plot, who got killed, who did it, what else was going on at the time, etc. Very, very loose, I didn't write much down for that part, if it was a longer story I'd probably want to map everything out really clear before I started writing dialogue but I really didn't have the time.

Most of the work was done in a spreadsheet to keep track of everything, I mapped out every combination of options for each character and wrote a response that made sense for each of them to say. I leaned pretty heavily on stereotypes and tropes to speed that up, if I continue with this idea I'll probably rewrite everyone to be a bit more realistic. In Kevin's case for example, it makes sense for him to lie about where he was at the time of the murder so that his affair doesn't get out but this might initially cast suspicion on him as his story falls apart pretty quick when you talk to the others.

To make the gameplay more interesting, I locked out a few of the questions at the start and as you play certain words trigger them to unlock. When you choose a question, that gets fed into a script to choose which dialogue to show and changing characters just switches out where each question goes. The most time consuming part was writing all the dialogue; 75 lines for each character, with 6 characters makes 450 lines of dialogue.

The reactivity meter was initially supposed to trigger more lines of dialogue as it went up, but pretty early on I realized that 450 lines was already pushing it so ultimately I cut the influence of that but kept the values I'd already assigned so the player can use them to gauge if a suspect is lying. For some people it seems to have caused some confusion so I'm not sure if I should have just cut that too, but that might have made it hard to gauge reactions since I didn't get reaction sprites in.

Hopefully that's comprehensive, thanks for asking!

SPEKS - A Murder Mystery by Swordfish 2021-05-02T18:15:50Z

@nablaz @pabulum @harmadillo I'm glad you enjoyed it, the intro is definitely the first thing to fix if I make a post-jam version. Last minute additions never quite work out the way I'd like but I think it was important to explain how to play. I'm really glad that everybody seems to have enjoyed the actual gameplay so far and there haven't been any real bugs, that's a big first for me haha.

SPEKS - A Murder Mystery by Swordfish 2021-05-16T00:24:46Z

@deltachemist thanks, I wasn't sure if people were going to like it being mostly text based, I considered making it top-down and looking sort of like FTL, but there's no way I could have got all the dialogue in if I went that direction.

DRIFTDOWN by NoahRo 2021-05-16T01:14:50Z

Nice game, getting heavy downwell vibes but that's fine. The music is great. I didn't actually get very far, found it really challenging but I can see myself coming back to play it some more later. I also really liked the little intro slideshow, that was a nice touch.

Hey, Wake Up! by SeaFishelle 2021-04-26T19:20:04Z

I think this is a good game. The graphics are nice and I like the design of your bear character. I really liked the gulp noise, thought it was funny. I thought the progression was good and I notice fairly quick that the speed meter drains faster the more gems you have. I did find the HTML version a bit laggy, but that isn't really an issue.

Rabbits Running by Taximan981 2021-04-26T04:49:27Z

Is the rabbit supposed to look like that. Or do I have a dirty mind. It's okay, not really the most complicated game. The music got a little repetitive, but over all, not bad.

Outer by kristinamay 2021-04-26T19:44:20Z

Pretty good across the board, all the little descriptions were pretty funny and I liked the music. It doesn't look like you fixed that bug though, I got to about the sixth galaxy and then had an error when going to the next.

``` Error
main.lua:637: attempt to compare nil with number
Traceback
main.lua:637: in function 'testOverlapGals' main.lua:415: in function [C]: in function 'xpcall'```
Pipeline Traveler by PD Dev 2021-04-26T21:25:17Z
I thought the game was pretty cool. I liked the idea, and as others seem to have commented the music was a nice touch. I had a bit of difficulty controlling the mouse, often had to try corners a few times. Was a bit odd that the mouse moved freely, but I think it could work. I just ended up getting stuck a few times. I think the hiding mechanic is pretty neat, though I couldn't really get the hang of it. I think that comes down to player skill more then the game though :)
Drills and Gadgets by RNGames 2021-04-26T02:42:28Z
I liked the controls, felt really intuitive. It was pretty good overall. I got a bit of a bug where my trail disappeared after I hit a rock. Thought you would want to know. It reminds me of a flash game called motherload. Just curious if that was an inspiration.
Dwarven Delver by cavedens 2021-04-26T02:18:15Z
I really like the art you put into it, both the end card and the title screen look pretty cool. Took me a try or two to figure out how to advance, like some other mentioned. Overall though, I think it was good.
Afraid to Turn by rhoff95 2021-04-26T21:00:08Z
Really well done. Got turned into a werewolf both times i tried, managed to get all the berries but not make it back. I had some difficulties scaring away the wolf, the rocks didn't seem to do anything sometimes when it was in the woods, but once it tried to charge you I found it quite fun. The atmosphere was awesome, and the sound really added to that. Great game:)
Deep Way To Basement by Usenrame 2021-04-26T20:45:19Z
Pretty fun, it's a nice mechanic, I like the graphics. Would have been nice if the other models could interact with each other though, bit weird to see the couch phase through the walls and I think that could have made it much more chaotic.
Goblin Philosopher by Jibberwocky 2021-04-26T20:07:31Z
This was nice, initially I found it a bit hard to tell apart my goblins from unconverted goblins, the sound was good.
Would have been nice if there was a bit more of a goal though.
Miner Rescue by mausimus 2021-04-26T02:48:40Z
I really like the design of your tunnel. I think this is a really great game. I didn't get very far, but that feels like a lack of skill on my part and that I could get farther with practice. I think my record was 17 seconds.
Ludum Dare News Network by SecretJuice 2021-04-26T04:15:46Z
This game is hilarious. Would love to know what exactly the rating means, I assume something to do with the deepness of your voice. This is probably the funniest thing I have played in a long time. It does feel a little rushed in some places, but overall great. Love the black mouth just vaguely moving in time to your voice.
Forbidden by aes 2021-05-16T01:02:55Z
Very cool graphics, love how the environment morphs around you, I'm also super interested in how you managed that. Very spooky mood, the sound effects helped a lot there. The boss fight was interesting but initially I wasn't sure what to do, I was kinda just flailing around until I noticed that the mushrooms did damage to it, maybe some more feedback on that would have been nice.
Paragon by LakshyaIsAGod 2021-04-26T03:01:20Z
Unfortunately, I also can't play the game as UnityPlayer.dll is missing. Hope you see these comments and get it fixed.
Paragon by LakshyaIsAGod 2021-04-26T18:49:37Z
I feel like I shouldn't be super negative, but this was not really worth the wait for me. It was a game. It worked, once I could run it.
I felt really bad for you when this game first popped up and it wasn't working right, because I think we have all run into bugs and problems.
But, the evidence of you trying to cheat the system in the comments here evaporated my sympathy. Hope you learn from this experience, and do better in the future.
Depar - LD48 by Cirdan 2021-04-26T03:50:43Z
I like the ideas behind this and I really like your sprites. It is a little disappointing that the enemies just sit there, but I understand that this is more of a proof of concept sort of thing. I think this would be a really great game if you fleshed out the mechanics a bit more. I like the setting of like the mechanical underbelly of a space colony. Neat idea.
ld48: no-eyes by sesemcc 2021-04-26T02:57:29Z
I think it is really interesting. I am still a bit confused as to how to play it properly. I figured out that the eyes move you in the direction they are looking, but I couldn't figure out how to solve the first puzzle. I thought your main character and sprites looked really cool, but the backgrounds and tiles were very hard on the eyes and a bit confusing. I think that I may have just not understood everything, but some more explanation of the mechanics at the start would have been helpful. Very good submission, and I hope you make more games. After you get some rest of course :)
Kill Yasuhiro by Spydercrawler 2021-04-26T20:20:01Z
That was good, I really liked the focus mechanic, it would have been much too hard without it I think.
The sword sound was probably the wrong choice though, sounds more like I'm swinging around a lightsaber or something. I liked the music overall, and slowing with the focus was really good.
Deeper & Deeper by Ironicnet 2021-04-26T04:04:04Z
I couldn't get past the second level, but I thought it was a fun little game. I really like the concept of being tied to a second character, but the control was just a little to difficult. Thanks for the game.
Little Boy Commits WarCrimes Against Nature by Yahay 2021-05-16T01:33:51Z
The level design was really enjoyable, not too hard but challenging enough to want to keep playing. The art was pretty good overall, I didn't really like the art in the levels themselves, but it was nice that each level had a distinct style and the main title was beautiful. I also noticed on the red level I could jump out of the map by jumping back up the way I fell down so that might be something to seal up.
Very cute overall.
Fetch! Good boys? by DashNothing 2023-05-02T21:05:57Z
Interesting take on a platformer, the constant bouncing makes it harder to plan your path for sure. I didn't make it all the way through, got stuck on the 5th or 6th level so I don't know if there were any other block types besides the spikes and the flamethrowers but they were interesting enough. The graphics are nice and polished, and the sound effects are nice, I think some background music would really help add to the vibe though.
Signs of Corruption by seurimas 2023-05-01T19:33:04Z
Really interesting idea, had some fun playing this with a friend. Not really sure what your power in a region does though, one of my agents had nearly 3000 but seemed to be just as effective as the new guy with 60. Cool concept though, and the correspondence part worked flawlessly, would like to see it fleshed out more.
Firelore: First Fate by LucasMolina 2023-05-06T16:07:54Z
I don't have much to say that hasn't been said, it's really an interesting concept. Kinda reminds me of the Giver in a way. I think it worked without music in the "cutscene" parts but if they were much longer it would be nice to have to add to the atmosphere.
Parcel Pursuit by bloodyaugust 2023-05-05T02:29:52Z
Charming is a good word for this game, the art is really nice and the music and sound effect selection is good even if you didn't make those. I found timing the double jump really hard though, it seems like there's only a small window to press the W button a second time for it to work; too soon and it doesn't, and too late it doesn't either so that was a bit frustrating. I also really liked the start menu being the delivery truck, that's a fun idea.
Airborne Adventures by firellon 2023-05-06T00:14:38Z
I have to agree that the movement is a bit floaty, but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the different types of platforms, and the graphics are nice. I found that the music was a bit repetitive by the end but I guess that's unavoidable with a short loop.
THREE GUYS - Pizza and Cheese by pfeyffer 2023-05-01T19:22:13Z
Good job, a fun game that plays well. I like the mechanics of rotating the cards to turn the lights on or off. I found it cool how many different combinations of cards you can use.
Dwarven Delivery Service by furry-fire 2023-05-05T16:40:15Z
Took me a bit to figure out that I just needed to get the boxes from one cannon to the next so the first one without a cart threw me off a bit but I really enjoyed it after that. Good job making shooting the cannons feel really good, I have to agree with the others that some music would really help though.
Also it wouldn't load for me on LD, but it works fine on itch.io, not sure why.
Bagelseeker by alaah 2023-05-04T19:13:51Z
It's really cute looking, and the falling sound is cute too, but I found the platforming extremely difficult even with the triple jump, especially those really small platforms with the key on them. I also think it needs to be clearer that you need to download the app to make it to the end but its a neat idea.
I also had the same issue as @nazorus, doesn't seem like a scaling issue though since I've got a 1920x1080 screen on 100% scaling :shrug:. Managed to get the app from the video so I got it working anyhow.
Haul and Pray by Shess 2023-05-03T16:49:59Z
This is a really polished entry, probably the best game I've played so far this time around. The graphics are really nice and the music sets the mood well. It kinda gives me darkest dungeon vibes. The amount of content here in only 72 hours is pretty amazing, but I got attacked by that bear three or four times lol. The only thing I can think of that's missing is some sort of health system (unless I missed it), taking damage didn't seem to have any consequence and I seemed to take a lot of damage lol.
Goblin! Rescue! Squad! by Liam Kinsella 2023-05-05T02:22:58Z
I really like the 2D characters in a 3D environment style, I've always thought that's a neat aesthetic. The goblins are cute and the movement felt good, one thing I struggled with though was aiming, maybe a dotted trajectory type of preview would be more useful than the simple arrow you've got now. I also found it difficult to charge a shot fast enough to hit the trolls before they hit me and broke the stones. The music and sound effects are pretty good too, I think the rocks were lacking a bit of impact though when they hit the trolls. Pretty good entry overall!
Alien Parcels by NoNiMad 2023-05-05T16:23:57Z
Could be a fun mobile game, which sort of looks like what you're going for with the aspect ratio. I found it really difficult to figure out how to sort packages but I eventually got the hang of it, I found the manual effectively useless. Might want to add some text to it to explain the distance thing and since the cards on the right showed some equations I figured that the symbols on the left were some sort of equation as well and not that they couldn't be put together. Overall pretty fun though once I figured it out.
SWAN SONG by Simon Rahnasto 2023-05-04T20:08:13Z
Really great entry, but that's pretty clear from the other comments lol. I didn't make it to the end, got killed while trying to fix the engine but oh well. I really like the graphical style here, combined with the music makes for a great atmosphere. I don't usually see voice acting in jam games, so I thought that was a nice touch too.
The only thing that didn't work particularly well for me was the glowing effect on the bullets, caused a bit of lag, but that's likely down to running it on my laptop with integrated graphics lol.
Age of Mail by Swordfish 2023-05-01T16:59:12Z
@nanixdev Thanks, yeah I was hoping to get some upgrades in to speed and inventory size maybe but that would have a been a fairly involved ui so unfortunately I didn't have time.
@lightpotato Thanks, that's what I was going for! I thought it was an interesting style (and it was easier to draw :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:). A minimap would be a must if the map was much larger, I figured at this scale it works okay without.
Age of Mail by Swordfish 2023-05-01T23:15:04Z
@adam-gould yeah a minimap is definitely going on the list of improvements lol.
@the-hat-guy I was worried it might be a bit busy, probably reducing the contrast on that would help.
@seurimas thanks, I was planning on coming back to adjust the hitboxes on the tiles but never got around to it. Couldn't find a way to adjust them numerically in Godot so they don't line up perfectly between tiles. I like that rebound idea, I didn't put much thought into making it feel like sailing honestly.
@bit-flipz I like that rations idea, would give another dimension to it. I had planned on adding pirates to deal with inbetween towns to make it more interesting, but of course, ran out of time.
Age of Mail by Swordfish 2023-05-02T20:37:11Z
@cobear25 the only consequence for delivering slowly is that you get less money, but with nothing to do with the money its not much of a problem lol.
Age of Mail by Swordfish 2023-05-06T01:02:29Z
@0x-void-x0 @spaceylake @highskies @bassilij Thanks for playing! I'm glad everybody seems to have enjoyed the game for the most part (even if its a bit simple gameplay wise). Honestly I'm surprised no one has run into any major bugs so far! I usually expect a few gamebreaking things lol, but this time around everything seems to be pretty smooth (aside from the collision issues).
Age of Mail by Swordfish 2023-05-08T00:36:40Z
@richard-baltrusch Thanks! That's a shame, I maybe could have made it clearer how to actually deliver packages? When within range of a town, press space to dock and any packages that have that town as their destination will disappear when moved to the drop-off slot. If the package is bound for a different town, it won't disappear when placed in the drop-off slot (and it'll be highlighted in red). That might be the issue you ran into?
@shimmerscale Thanks for playing! I'm glad the effort I put in to polish shows through.
@roroto-sic Wow you must have played it for quite a while to get up to a thousand! Yeah there's no win or lose conditions to speak of, just a chill experience until you get bored. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Garçon! by MercilessCult 2023-05-10T21:17:15Z
I think this idea has a lot of potential! I really enjoyed the gameplay and the graphics but its could definitely use some polish. I found it really hard to read the names on the letters and reference that to the guestbook, maybe some way to look at an individual letter directly would be good. I'd also really have appreciated a sprint button lol, the movement speed felt really slow to me. I really liked the pixel art style myself but it might be good to increase the number of pixels a bit so its easier to see things from a distance.
Morse Messanger by Alexander Tan 2023-05-01T17:53:31Z
I couldn't finish it (skill issue lol) but I got to the second part where you have to decode a message. Not sure how far in that is but was playing for a few minutes. I think it is good, neat concept. I think the writing was funny and It fits the theme in my opinion. I think it would have helped to change the timing on the dash, it was a bit long to hold and I accidentally dotted too many times.
deLIVERY by hwaet 2023-05-03T18:31:33Z
I had to look up most of the heraldry terms lol, but it was a fun experience. Some of them were really hard! I guess I'm naught but a saddle-goose after all. I found the music a bit grating though.
Mail-In Vengeance by YellowKamel 2023-05-05T15:59:43Z
Took a bit to figure out how to control the balloon, but managed to slay the dragon on my second run. Definitely an interesting mechanic. The style of the dragon reminds me of hooktail from that paper mario game for the game cube, its kinda cute.
RIDDLER by StoicKekis 2023-05-01T18:40:40Z
I am also not quite sure how to make it work properly. Loaded it and saw nothing. Do I have to play it with someone else? Sorry if I am misunderstanding. Sounds like an interesting concept, if I did something wrong or their was some problem I will give it a go again.
UNPRESIDENTED by Alyson Betz 2023-05-03T17:27:46Z
It's a funny idea, the Canadians made me laugh. Really hard to control the unicycle but I guess that's the point. I also liked the variety in failure messages, I saw quite a few of them lol.
Winter Factory by Jul._.li 2023-05-03T16:15:57Z
Fun little game, really polished, the graphics and sound design are probably the highlight for me. I think it was a bit easy though, you could probably speed up the conveyor a fair bit before it gets too hard.
Unread Messages by shimmerscale 2023-05-04T19:43:57Z
This is a great entry! Really enjoyed the mechanics, and the aesthetic is spot on. Would love to see more levels, and I accidentally ran into the same issue one level four as @poshdan so you might want to rework that one a bit lol.
Onboard Hell by Blublu 2023-05-01T18:17:14Z
This is almost like a better version of the concept for my compo game lol so I might be biased but I really enjoyed it. I was a little confused when I lost the first time since I wasn't watching the timer, something to highlight it when its getting low might be good. The markers to show the direction of your next delivery were a good idea, not sure if I would have known where to go otherwise. Great entry!
Divine Messenger by ndellam 2023-05-05T02:05:30Z
I couldn't get very far due to the weird jumping mechanics, I only made it to the second screen but the sound design is good and I liked the screen shake when you fall a long distance. I have to agree in that the movement mechanics are frustrating, it feels a bit like your sliding across a sheet of ice or something. Generally platformers aim to have very precise movement so going against that creates a pretty strange feel, that's not necessarily a bad thing if you really lean into it though, could be an interesting "rage" platformer maybe.
The Delivering of Christ - The trials of Mary by Trakina 2023-05-01T17:24:35Z
I really like the graphics, the gameplay reminds me of vampire survivors and the like. Maybe fewer obstacles would have been good though, I kept getting stuck on things.
Have You Got a Moment? by Alex Knowles 2023-05-01T18:10:11Z
Fun little game, I like the concept. I sort of like the slow pace, but there is a lot of space to add different features. I like the interactivity of some of the decor. I ran into a bug that broke the game while I was playing. While handing a package to one person, before they finished speaking I handed it to the intended person. They finished the other lines then said their own. Then I was curious and I handed a package to the right person then before they finished handed it to another. The same thing happened with the second person finishing the lines then saying their own but they continued to speak after the package disappeared.
Here is a screenshot.Screenshot 2023-05-01 140858.jpg
Not really a big deal, I know I broke it myself lol, just wanted to mention it.
Human Delivery by Unfinished632 2023-05-01T18:23:31Z
I really like the concept of this game. Has a retro feel, like one of the original gta games. I really like the warping to make look like an old crt, though for me the view was zoomed in to much. I found the controls sort of difficult to get immediately, when backing up the directions stayed the same and that threw me to start with. But, I think once you get used to them it would be good.
Aspect Traveler by Benedict Ide 2023-05-05T00:34:06Z
I'm impressed by the amount of writing here, that's a lot of effort on its own plus the art and music are nice. I never made it to the summit, kept dying after a couple of turns since I had a hard time telling which options would reduce which stats. Some of them were intuitive, like the hot and cold ones, but the others were a bit more difficult for me to judge. I noticed that sometimes the options showed the effects they would have but sometimes they didn't, I think consistently showing that info would be a major improvement.
Styx by manioora 2023-05-05T01:51:41Z
I like the vibe of this one and I enjoyed the variation in environment throughout the map but I have to agree with others that the movement system is a little confusing. It doesn't really behave like a rowboat, but once I figured out that holding both A and D moved you forward it was a lot easier to get around. I also found the dialog a bit strange in that it doesn't really fit with the rest of the vibe of the game. Really great entry overall though, and I really enjoyed the atmosphere.
