Are you sure this is a game?
providing at least some information how to run it would be nice, I kinda doubt that most people would be willing to learn what it is, how to compile or run it... this is the first time I've heard about the nim language and had to google what it could be...
funny game O_o
I compiled it Screenshot from 2021-04-26 12-07-46.png
But it's hard to rate as a game because it doesn't seem there is a core loop that's working. If a wait a few seasons the game ends regardless of what I do. So in the spirit of DF: losing is fun!
@Anon - Never claimed it was a fun one, lol. Not one of my better LD entries for sure.
@shigor - Yes, I hope to come back in the next day or two and post a Windows executable and instructions. I had to submit what I had a bit early and run some errands and mow the lawn before it got dark, and I've been at work all day today. Thanks for trying though. Check out Nim some time, it's a great language ;)
@arnold-990 - I was so preoccupied with whether or not I could, I didn’t stop to think if I should.
@kraemahz - Yay! Thanks for trying it out. Probably it ends because you run out of food/ale lol. Definately wish I'd had time to finish the ending screen with that kind of feedback.
@shigor Windows .exe has been added :)
I was excited when I realized it was a text-based version of Dwarf Fortress. I enjoyed it.
Awesome text based, city management sim. Crashed on day 2, but I like the idea.
EDIT: @luthwyhn, its a hard crash to exit, the program just closes after hitting 0 on day 2. (Happened twice). Actually, it managed to fix after i launched from the console.
Great idea, my time in DF made me end up with 2 fighters, 2 crafters and WAYYYY to many miners :D
If you're going to work on this further let us know!
Good job!
Ooh, would love to see a screenshot of the crash @sacredbacon; I was under the impression that it was reasonably stable lol (though I guess I haven't actually played the Windows version at all)
@uc101 Thanks!
@tezza48 I'm still unsure if I'll do more with it, lol, but if I do end up doing more I'll let you know :D
I got through a about four seasons before it crashed as well, not sure why wasn't running it in command prompt so it just closed :(
Real ambitious to recreate DF in a weekend so kudos for that, I think you got the main things in, there's so much more to add if you do continue.
This was neat to see! I enjoyed what I was able to play, though even making sure I had enough food and ale by trading was not enough to make the game last past a couple of seasons from it crashing. There was not much choice in what to tell the dwarves so early on, but I can easily imagine assigning them to specific places and jobs and having the warriors protect the others. Very cool idea, would like to see it expanded on more!
I compiled it for Linux, worked like a charm  http://openfu.com/ld/ld48/luthwyhn-df.tar.xz
Regarding the game itself, it's actually quite cool, if not very user-friendly. I'm confused about the food and ale mechanic, because there doesn't seem to be any actual consumption, is that correct?
I think what people think are "crashes" is just the game ending after an in-game year.
What I would have liked most is an automatic report of what happened as the season progressed, and of course, a little more depth..
I love Dwarf Fortress! It also reminds me of game called "Warsim: The Realm of Aslona". Nice take on the theme, I have not seen anything like that in this LD. I wish it was a little bit more ballanced since every time I run of of food before I have anythng to trade, and without ability to farm, it was imposible to survive for long. Or maybe I'm missing something. Anyway, great job. It was a !!FUN!! experiance.
Interesting game, I was really getting into it, but then it just abruptly ended after first few seasons. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or nothing further is implemented. Anyway, I can definitely see where you were going with this, and I think it could be quite engaging.
@toppervideogames Thanks!
@udo2 Yeah, absolutely would have improved the reporting if I hadn't run out of time. I don't think it's very navigable in the current form.
@zimny11 WARSIM is so good! Definately was part of my inspiration here as well. There's absolutely no balance in this thing lol, I was just making up number as I went and had no time to go back and adjust them.
@nonumbersgames It sounds like when you play it from the exe you don't get to see the final output and so any lose condition probably looks like a crash. Not that I was reporting a lot of useful information lol, but at least it told you the game was over.
It's a good start, though I had the same issue other people mentioned regarding the game crashing (I think this might have something to do with all the dwarves starving due to lack of food/drink). For future additions, you might want to add some information to the season progression screen providing a summary on what's changed, and it's possible a method for automating trades so that you can ensure a regular supply of food without having to do it manually each season would be useful. Good work!
@luthwyhn that definitely explains it! Running through console helped, though still have no idea why the game was over. Probably due to unexpected shortages though - there is a bug where the ale and food consumption is increased by all previous season consumptions. If first season dwarves consume 1022, then next season they will consume 2044 instead of 1022, then 3088 instead of 1022. So it very quickly becomes impossible to keep up with the increasing demand.
@nonumbersgames Sounds like I'm not resetting my consumption counter. I'll check it out, thanks!
Awesome!! I love terminal based games, thank you so much for the experience, really enjoyed it. Although I've never played Hamurabi, I also love Dwarf Fortress, so this was fun. Loved the concept. Also very adequate do the theme. Gotta dig deeper!! One more thing: very cool programming language. I believe I've heard about it but never quite looked into it, so thank you for showing me a new one. Cool game! Would also love if you could check out our game, we've had a lot of time issues and are also trying to at least get to 20 votes in these last few days
@hermitao Thanks for the feedback! I absolutley love programming in Nim so far, but I haven't had a chance to figure out any of the graphics libraries yet lol. Sure, I'll check yours out! I know it's a lot harder for people to get ratings these days when their game can't be played in-browser :(
Nice concept of management game! Pretty simple and easy to read texts.
Some remark: game lacks of UI, the text looks mixed.
Keep going!
This is the only LD game I've run from source, which was a nice addition to the experience. Works great on Linux. I'm not sure if there was any need for the warriors, but I dug down and made sure the dwarves didn't starve, and then the game ended. Anyways, always neat to see a proper text game, good stuff
