LD48 — Deeper and deeper

So-so-phia by kuro 2021-05-08T10:48:59Z

I played this after seeing it on JUSTCAMH's stream, very very nicely done! The graphics are extraordinary for a Compo entry. All in all this game provides a real journey experience, in the best sense of the word. I loved the meta-monologue, it gave me Stanley Parable vibes (not necessarily because of the content, but something about the reflective, ironic stance of the narrator I think).

The things that stand out with this game are the writing, the art, the polish, the combat, and the mood in general. Great job!

CTRL BASE ZERO by ted 2021-05-03T09:40:17Z

Suddenly: the end! But... I want to see what happened to the base! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Very well done in the short amount of time you had. With the colored snow at the end and the general mood, the game feels like it would fit into the SCP universe.

I would definitely like to play a full(er)-sized version of this!

Daré Fortress by luthwyhn 2021-05-16T10:02:37Z

I compiled it for Linux, worked like a charm  http://openfu.com/ld/ld48/luthwyhn-df.tar.xz

Regarding the game itself, it's actually quite cool, if not very user-friendly. I'm confused about the food and ale mechanic, because there doesn't seem to be any actual consumption, is that correct?

I think what people think are "crashes" is just the game ending after an in-game year.

What I would have liked most is an automatic report of what happened as the season progressed, and of course, a little more depth..

Lonely Journey by blockerz 2021-05-03T10:31:25Z

@blockerz I compiled it for MacOS in order to run it, it's here in case anyone else needs it: https://openfu.com/ld/ld48/LonelyJourney.zip

Loved this game! A minimal soundtrack would have been neat, or some UI effects. Speaking of UI, the inverted up/down arrow buttons for acceleration threw me off more than once  This game is pretty much complete and self-contained, which is an awesome feat for a Compo game! Loved the AI/MC drama

I would pretty much only change two things about this game: - since the craft is solar powered, decrease the amount of power that comes in with distance from the sun - allow the game to run in the background (because right now it pauses when you switch to another window)

In the Hole by Kramdar 2021-05-15T08:51:31Z

Untested Linux Build works just fine  It's simply beyond impressive that this is a Compo game. I seriously have no idea how some people are so insanely productive. The graphics were impressive, the mechanics solid, no bugs that I could see.

Pressure by smt 2021-05-17T16:38:12Z

Thank you for providing a dedicated Linux build! <3

Congratulations on your first game! I liked the fact that you included bouncing shot combos in this simple but fun shooter. I loved how the enemies make an "ow" sound when hit

Things I would change are: make it more obvious which enemy is charging up currently, and give them differently colored shots from mine. Of course, powerups would have been cool, but that's probably not in scope for a Compo game.

Well done!

Cutting Edge by Notan Lemon 2021-05-08T10:08:27Z

This is hands-down the best puzzle game I played this LD. It becomes challenging very fast, but doesn't need to introduce a lot of new concepts all the time. The level design was balanced and didactically thought through. I love how clear the rules and the problems were, and yet it took me quite a while to think about them. Congrats on this very cool concept, I'm a bit jealous actually

Deep Fall by fire_soldier888 2021-05-08T10:47:34Z

Short and sweet, I loved the art and the general mood. I wish this had more polish and also more to do. Sound effects, more animation, and ultimately I think stuff to collect on the way down would have been cool. It is nice that this game is self-contained and complete, I just wish there was more of it

Magic Forest by RuslanCH 2021-05-17T10:18:04Z

I enjoyed this little endless runner, mainly because the graphics are so damn cute! Really great work on the graphics, minimal as they may be, I dig the style. Did you make the music yourself?

My main improvement suggestion: make the powerups/powerdowns disappear when you hit them, preferably with a special effect. Flying enemies would also be a nice addition.

Well done!

Am I only dreaming? by DerGamer 2021-05-15T08:46:54Z

Got myself stuck with the boxes, a quick level restart would have been good. Good job, as someone who doesn't play a lot of platformers I enjoyed the forgiving mechanics!

Recursive Repairman by Bipmo Bopmo 2021-04-29T23:00:24Z

This game does run under Wine on Linux, however I'm not sure if it's running correctly because there is no sound and when I press keys for too long the character moves multiple times. That's not on you or the game, it's my own fault.

I liked the Sokoban concept of pulling the boxes for once instead of pushing them! I'm not sure whether I like the mechanic that the character's facing direction makes a difference, but it did contribute to the depth of the game. But since the direction *is* in the game: did we need a separate robot X button after all?

The recursion theme with the robots is absolutely fantastic, wonderfully done! I absolutely loved how well executed this idea is, and the deep mechanics that come from the details, like how to "program" the robots. This is just an excellent example of a simple game with real depth, something I admittedly struggle with a lot in my own games (I tend to make complicated games that are very shallow).

Deep Sea Tycoon by Udo2 2021-04-27T15:13:17Z

Thank you @osterzone! Sorry it's open-ended like that I just ran out of time... the frustrating thing is it's not hard to add content to the game now that everything is in place. I really feel I should have gone with this idea instead of what I did for the Compo - two days instead of one would have added some real depth here.

Yes, I agree that the management team is exploitable, you probably shouldn't be allowed to sell them straight away. The idea behind the maintenance crew is that it's too expensive for the crappy starter rig but really good for the big rig. However, you're probably right that keeping the price the same was not the brightest idea

Thank you for trying it out! <3

@styledsnail thank you, good to know! I think I'll be getting a post-LD version going

Deep Sea Tycoon by Udo2 2021-04-28T22:39:59Z

@mauriciomunky thank you for your feedback! Yes, it's easy to go into a debt spiral (like in real life). A credit system would probably help in these cases, that's definitely something I'm going to add to the post-Jam version.

As I said before, the frustrating thing for me about this game is that it's really easy to add new systems and content to it now that the foundation stands, but sadly I ran out of time to do it.

Deep Sea Tycoon by Udo2 2021-04-29T14:53:52Z

@robotex I know. Thank you for trying it out :)

Thank you @tadej, I agree with all your points!

Deep Sea Tycoon by Udo2 2021-05-16T09:06:31Z

@kuro <3 thank you!

@bozmak  by tunes do you mean music (because there is! I recycled a song from a previous LD!) or tuning the rules? Tuning the style?

Deep Sea Tycoon by Udo2 2021-05-17T07:28:09Z

@neon thank you. The crew intentionally costs too much for the crappy oil rigs, but as you can afford better platforms, they become really great. They're only maintenance crews, so all they do is slow the decay of the equipment. I should probably have made that clearer in the UI.
