LD40 — The more you have, the worse it is

Horders Loot Rush by Rad4th 2017-12-05T05:26:30Z

I like the concept and it's pretty fun to play. The monster that chases you is quite surprising! I would like to see more reason to kill the enemies, now you can just jump over everyone but the monster still catches you. Maybe if you couldn't jump without food as it seems to be intended. I don't see a lot of use for the block either, if it can be timed to the enemy's attacks it should be more visible. All in all I could see myself killing time playing this particularly if you got it on mobile.

Horders Loot Rush by Rad4th 2017-12-05T19:06:24Z

@Rad4th Excellent! My mistake for not picking up on it. Knowing that it makes the gameplay loop a lot more interesting having to decide between spending the time attacking an enemy or jumping away to only make the monster faster and harder on yourself later. Plus you get more loot to manage! Thanks for the response, good job!

Saving Crying Bryan by gyfis 2017-12-08T19:40:04Z

Great game! Personally I really enjoyed the sprites and I think the cartoony animations add a lot to the game's character. I would have liked a little more detail in the level tiles but the clutter makes up for it. The characters are a bit stereotypical but I think the humor works for a short game, and the voice acting really sells it for me. There are a few issues with hit detection and the level I couldn't get past with the ton of hostages seems impossible but I may just not be good enough. Overall very entertaining, good job!

Saving Crying Bryan by gyfis 2017-12-08T19:52:54Z

@gyfis Thanks for the tip, the tutorial made it seem to me like they all had to be rescued at once!

Lava Lamp Factory by Jcourt 2017-12-05T06:22:52Z

Managing demand could make for interesting economics in a factory building game like this, the only problem is that demand keeps going down. With a method to increase demand at a cost like marketing or rotating colors the game could have a longer lifecycle. Placing some structures is a little wonky and results in the bots having trouble getting there and sources that can't be reached will never disappear and only lure more bots in to get stuck. That being said, the progression was satisfying and I enjoyed building up the factories. Good job!

Asteroid gravity by Psilon 2017-12-08T20:12:53Z

Good twist on a classic. Feedback could be tweaked as mentioned for destroying asteroids. I would like to see a health bar as it is very tough to gauge how much damage the different asteroid sizes deal. Also a score system or some other progression response would be nice like a powerup or bonus enemy every 10 or so cycles to break the gameplay up. All together a solid entry, congrats on making the compo!

L.A.V.A.L.A.M.P. vs Evil Magic Alien Robots by piscythe 2017-12-05T05:41:28Z

Solid game! It takes a while to get going but once it does it gets hectic quick trying to order everyone around. It's all about predicting and positioning, it would be cool to see some abilities to play with too if you decide to build on it in the future. Good Job!

The Beforlorne Wander by pvtroswold 2017-12-08T17:53:29Z

Very cool! The music really sets the atmosphere but the sound effects could use some mixing as some seem too quiet and other too loud. I could get on board with the graphic design of the enemies especially if animations were added and if the level tile textures matched matched up better. I like the scan-line look they have. A slightly faster player speed would help it from feeling a little sluggish and some more leniency on jump heights would make platforming feel more natural but I do like some of the precise jumps. Level design was great giving the two areas different personalities. I was disappointed I couldn't take the best gun all the way back up the tunnels unless I missed a path. Big props for adding the boss fights. Overall it's a very enjoyable game! Glad to see a metroidvania entry!

Sushi Factory Frenzy! by jasperarmstrong 2017-12-05T04:55:50Z

Spot on theme and entertaining gameplay. A music track and some variety like an additional piece or two after you get far enough would help keep help player's attention. Good Job!

Fortress Escape by SpaceMonkey 2017-12-05T05:09:07Z

I really enjoyed this. I would have liked to see some more to do with the FPS part and I was itching to play more levels. As-is it could use a little polish and some more depth but if you expand it to include more/upgraded turrets and dress it up it would be a solid game. I'm interested to see where you go with this.

Stranded alone by BluesyPompanno 2017-12-08T19:10:03Z

Good simple concept makes for a good experience. I'm not sure if picking up more stuff makes you slower or not it's a little tough to tell. With a little polish it would make a great game. In addition to the points of improvement mentioned by others I think moving where the enemies spawn from every so often would help keep players on their toes. Good job getting it done for the jam!

Warehouse by Ratbird 2017-12-08T18:48:45Z

The graphics are great and the idea of trying to manage a tycoon like game while running around shooing people away is very entertaining. The mechanics are there but it is not presented to the player too well. There could be more on screen cues as to what is happening besides the end of the day report. More feedback would give the player more direction. With improved player feedback and a bit more added content this could be a great game. It is still an ambitious idea and completing a prototype in 72 hours is impressive, congrats!

Night City Challenge by makerart 2017-12-08T17:20:59Z

Very cool game, as others have said the aesthetics are superb and combined with the trippy free running gameplay make for a unique experience. Besides some camera and level design work as has been suggested, I would like to see the pyramid enemies more. Maybe give them a longer chase distance and speed but also less frequent attacking. As is, you either blast past them or get to close and instantly get punted away. Also maybe make the orbs speed up when chasing you. I have found that after a certain number are in the process of chasing you to be collected that you can't pick up any more even if you're right on top of them. It can be frustrating if they're across the map and you're sitting on some more and about to die but can't pick them up. Overall it was very entertaining!

Grim Groupies by Kramdar 2017-12-05T02:43:55Z

Feature creeped again but it's a game and I can call it done enough to submit for the jam. Had a lot more planned that had to be dropped and got caught up on a few silly things that killed time. Looking forward to the next one already!

Grim Groupies by Kramdar 2017-12-05T06:26:25Z

Thanks, I do plan on improving and expanding it!

Grim Groupies by Kramdar 2017-12-06T21:45:43Z

@jasperarmstrong @jcourt The archer section is actually not working as intended in this version. You can push past them since you respawn over and over but it's because in the final time crunch I messed up the level geometry somewhere. I'll be redesigning it for future versions so that's fixed and you don't lose as many followers in the level. I'm also playing around with a way for the minions to passively group up more but I'll make it a manual action if it doesn't work out nicely. Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

Busy Room by chinykian 2017-12-08T16:58:08Z

Fantastic! Everything really comes together in this. The tiny color palette, retro music, and simple arcade gameplay compliment each other so well. Each time I play it I notice another bit of polish too, from the crunchiness of the music during slow mo to the screen jitter upon diamond pickup. The only criticism I have is that there could be something added to getting past certain milestones. Whether it's a beneficial powerup or an enemy that's faster or has a special ability. It might clash with the minimalist appeal but once a player reaches that point and things switch up a bit they'll have even more drive to reach that point again, and this game is already addictive. Definitely my top pick at the moment!

LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Planet 43 by MyFriendTames 2018-12-04T22:08:22Z

Very entertaining! The graphics are cute and expressive and the game handles very well. A few sound effects and some balancing would make this game really shine but we're all familiar with time crunch. Nice work!

Antibody by crazyrems 2018-12-03T23:45:14Z

Wow! From the moment I launched the game I was floored! Cinematic cutscenes, an interesting environment with tons going on and an absolutely bumping soundtrack. I love abstract styled games so I may be a little biased but this pulls it off so well. Exploring and figuring out what to do was fantastic, it fits the theme and the whole game really comes together.

One thing I would have liked modified is the ending. It's a bit slow as it is right now and comparatively less engaging than the rest of the game. Some organelles in there protecting the nucleus or maybe your triangles slowly disintegrate so you're on a time limit. Something to give you one last hurdle and make it a skillful challenge instead of attrition, at that point the theme has been made abundantly clear already. It would really help with the pacing arc and put it over the moon in my book.

My biggest complaint however is that there isn't more game there to play! As an entry it's short and sweet and I cant complain but I'd love to see a full game in this style facing larger and more complex cells. All that set to more killer tunes and trippy visuals, I'd be all over it.

Great work

Sheepocide by shaulor 2018-12-12T23:52:32Z

Awesome game! The card mechanics really make it stand out from the other resource management games submitted. Once the rounds were getting faster and the crazier cards started showing up I could really see the humor and started getting 'baaa' vibes.

I like how it transitions from favoring a slow strategic playstyle to a more reaction based one. I love the graphics too. They're cute, cartoony and stylish. The UI is efficient and having a visual representation of the difficulty scaling is a nice touch.

The retro sound effects fit really well but they're terribly quiet, I had to crank my speakers to appreciate them. It's better than having my speakers blow but it could use a bit more oomph. A music track to go along would really put the icing on the cake.

I wish this game had a few more cards to bring the playtime up a bit. I really enjoyed playing it, I want more! Good work!

Inspired By Bad Taste by N3K 2018-12-11T00:29:27Z

Great game! Gameplay is satisfying with the sound effects for feedback. The graphics are cartoony and humorous and compliments the dark undertones of the music and story. My biggest complaint really is how short it was, if it was a little more challenging or if you had to use the same mechanics to splash the gas around or something it would be a bit more satisfying. Very impressive especially for only 16 hours of development! Good work!

Muscles and the Gun by Kramdar 2018-12-03T02:02:49Z

just squeaked it in. Everything is completed, I will not be touching the source at all anymore. hope everything is wired up... I do still have to build it and upload to itch.io, should not be more than a couple minutes. Hopefully that doesn't clash with the rules otherwise I will move it to jam.

Muscles and the Gun by Kramdar 2018-12-03T02:33:10Z

oh dang i thought it ended at 9pm. gotta hustle for that last bug...

Muscles and the Gun by Kramdar 2018-12-03T03:00:10Z

welp changed some minor things, mainly level geometry of third level fixed so you can actually beat it. assuming this commit ever goes through...

Muscles and the Gun by Kramdar 2018-12-03T22:23:23Z

Thank you kindly @mrspeaker! It's always a challenge balancing what to polish so I'm glad some of it shines.

By request you can find a download for the soundtrack as extended edits, original loops, and all the sound effects. Feel free to use them as you please and check out beepbox.co which I used to make them if you want to get your pseudo chiptune on.

Cheers

Muscles and the Gun by Kramdar 2018-12-04T01:32:07Z

Great! Weird is what I was going for @marc-grabow, almost thought I didn't make it weird enough!

Muscles and the Gun by Kramdar 2018-12-10T04:05:06Z

Thanks for the feedback @triplefox and @backurio! Yeah it definitely has a problem with level 2 being tricky and the difficulty spiking in level 3. In hindsight it was a poor choice especially with the last level being the one that has anything to do with the theme. I had to laugh at how frustrating the last cowboy in level 3 was so I didn't have the heart to remove it but I should have taken the time to make it more manageable. Level design and balancing was something that got stuck in the time crunch, I didn't even realize that you could get trapped in level 2.

Muscles and the Gun by Kramdar 2018-12-12T23:15:39Z

Thanks @MZA, I used beepbox.co for the music and sound effects. It's simple to use and easy to throw together stuff for small projects like this. I didn't fully consider the size of the bullets and I can see how they'd be frustrating especially if someone was playing on a smaller screen. I intended to have an instruction screen but wound up relying on players button mashing. I'm glad you figured it out, I'm sure not everyone is as persistent.

Sacrifices must be made by TasakaSama 2018-12-04T00:10:34Z

More levels would have been nice but the two you have are pretty fleshed out and do a good job showing off the mechanics you've put in!

The player movement feels tight and jumps are tricky to master but gives it a nice challenge. I would have liked a death counter or a timer to further drive home the sacrifices you have to make to change shape. It might help avoid the player feeling like it is tedious if they're trying to optimize it instead of just use it to continue.

The minimal abstract visuals kind of work as is. Some more polish and activity in the environment is all it needs imo. It's too bad the jelly/fluid character types didn't pan out, it sounds cool. Fleshing this out would make a great game!

Nice work

Those Greedy Gods by FoxPlayer 2018-12-04T23:28:07Z

Not a lot of first person games get submitted so this stands out. Player movement is tight and the graphics have a simple charm about them. Really hits the theme on the head. I would have liked a shorter time limit and/or a smaller level, as it stands it gets a little tedious waiting around for the week to finish. Something to use the crops on like upgrades would make the sacrifice feel more impactful. Good entry! Loved the cutscenes!

Village of Sacrifice - LD43 by backurio 2018-12-03T23:09:35Z

Great entry! Balancing the resources and villagers is a challenging but rewarding gameplay loop. The graphics do the job well and are quite charming. The music brings the mood together and reminds me of scenes in movies with a catastrophe in slow mo set over soft music (at least when I play, those high scores are impressive).

One discouraging event that can happen is reaching the population cap when you don't have the resources to build new beds and you can't produce the requested units. If you could reassign workers for the same cost as making a new one it could be avoided and wouldn't be too broken since they'd still have to walk over to the new resource, wasting time and resources. Then again it reinforces how much you should be planning and preparing for the next groups you need to sacrifice so I might just be bad.

I think the introduction screen explains the premise well and the UI is clear and effective once you take a second to recognize the sacrifice button. The stats at the end are much appreciated in games like these.

Overall it's a well polished entertaining submission, good job!

Village of Sacrifice - LD43 by backurio 2018-12-03T23:09:35Z

BomberFall by Fieldins 2018-12-04T22:37:48Z

Great use of the theme! It's very rewarding getting one of your units on the same tile as a big group of the enemy's and quickly turning the tide although it might not be entirely intended to win that way. Interesting spin on the genre! Aside from some polish I think a larger level with more paths would be fun to play with the mechanics more but also harder to balance. Good job!

Sacriphys by TSnake41 2018-12-10T04:21:28Z

Good entry! I had to laugh when I sacrificed the rendering! It controls well and the UI is very nice showing velocity and rotation while it lasts. Some choices have more effect than others, the glitchy thrusters very quickly rammed me into about 6 asteroids killing me before the next choice popped up. I think having the choices be lopsided trade offs would have been interesting but it fits with the theme more as is. Nice job!

Electric Sacrifices by Haccart Loan 2018-12-11T00:07:02Z

Excellent entry! The graphics are fun and cartoony while staying clean. The sound effects are clear if a little weird but it fits with the game. The controls are tight and it holds up well to the brisk speeds I was able to reach. All in all it's a tight and consistent package with little to complain about. I would have liked a bit of music or ambience to fill out the audio in the beginning before the squawks become more constant. The theme could have been more represented, to a dense player like myself it seems that you just get points for taking out the other birds without much consequences. That's about it though, I really enjoyed playing this humorous game. All the more impressive as a solo creator in just 20 hours!

LD45 — Start with nothing

Untitled LD45 Entry by Kramdar 2019-10-10T21:48:12Z

Yeah I intended the beginning to be a bit opaque but I guess I went too far. I kind of just assumed people would try all the controls and figure it out. Next time I'll have to put them in the game itself.

The tiny match by cpx3 2019-10-14T17:25:01Z

Cute game! I managed to clip out of the world on one of the ropes so I found myself wanting a way to get through the beginning sequence a little quicker. Love the art and music, would definitely enjoy playing a longer version where you meet more animal friends! Nice work!

Dungeon Legends by Studios With An A 2019-10-14T17:52:10Z

Looks like you have all the beginnings of a solid game here! With some polish, spritework, and getting the map working would make this pretty quality. I would have preferred a more zoomed out camera but otherwise the shooting gameplay itself felt good with the particle and screen shake feedback.

LD48 — Deeper and deeper

"Say Aaaah...!" by gilborn 2021-05-05T22:32:50Z

If an actor makes you hate the character they play... they are a good actor. This game give me the same gut twist reaction as when I watch a video of someone doing something stupid and winding up bending their knees the wrong way :skull_crossbones:

At the same time this game is hilarious and a lot of fun. I lost it when I thought I was doing well controlling a cavity and suddenly missed one particle that slid down the good side of the tooth. I had to frantically control it and wound up loosing half the tooth but it was great fun! "Literally Mayhem" is right, in the best ways! One of my favorites so far, great job!

Ronin Blade by joni-jarvinen 2021-04-26T18:29:56Z

Very cool, loved the spritework!

In the Hole by Kramdar 2021-04-26T19:02:17Z

Thanks for the feedback!

@ristoretto Resources get more valuable and there are more of them the further down you go so it is technically possible to pay the loan off. It takes a minimum of 15 minutes though so without anything else interesting to do in the game I probably wouldn't recommend trying for it. Had to cut some features to make the time limit unfortunately.

In the Hole by Kramdar 2021-04-26T19:53:05Z

@kieron-woodhouse minerals should yield 1-5 units when extracted on the surface, and increase the further down you go, so at some point you can turn it around. I don't blame anyone for backing out before they get to that point though.

@someoneman that's a very good point I didn't even consider lol

In the Hole by Kramdar 2021-05-28T04:09:16Z

Thank you everyone for playing and leaving all the wonderful feedback! I regret not being able to be more active in the rating phase and replying to everyone sooner.

Congratulations to everyone who beat it! In hindsight I should have made it a more achievable goal since I leaned pretty hard on the theme to begin with. That just makes it more impressive though!

I appreciate all of the suggestions and combined them on a trello board with how I envision expanding on the game post-jam. They might not all happen and those that do might not happen quickly. Feel free to follow along here if you're interested: https://trello.com/b/fT5P4PsM/intheholepld

The improvements are largely around making the underground more interesting via more mechanics. I'll be aiming for a similar play time, but make it more interesting. Some graphics might change but overall graphical fidelity probably won't. Trying to keep the scope down because it is just as lethal to both my jam and post-jam projects.

The Caves of Dirt by Blue05 2021-05-04T23:30:44Z

Very nice entry! The pacing of the levels is excellent imo and that is pretty rare in a 48 hour jam! If I had to make one improvement I would make the ladders a little stickier. I found myself being lazy and running straight off the other side of them sometimes. Might make some of the tighter sections more approachable, but the movement is tight enough that it's more of a git gud situation and I kind of like that too. That's about the only critique I can really make, and it is not a big one at all. Great job!

Follow My Voice by coyotethursday 2021-05-04T22:57:06Z

When I read the description I expected a Nightjar or Papa Sangre like experience. I quite enjoyed those but felt that their movement scheme, while unique, was too constrictive. Being able to move around with the same fidelity that I am used to in other FPS games really drives up the immersion!

The sound effects and vo were great, even the comically bloopy walking through water sound. Something that could help in this kind of game is a number of static ambient audio sources to help orient the player. It's not super necessary in this one since your goal is always making sound but if you get too far away then you're in trouble! The sound of scraping/bumping into walls was a very helpful touch though.

Great entry all in all. I'd love to play a version of this with more content!
