LD37 — One room

Red and Blue VR by Beep2Bleep 2016-12-17T18:25:00

The ships and their effects look nice, and the look overall is pretty good. The game did lag a bit for me though, but I suppose that's understandable since I'm on the very low end of VR-capable graphics hardware. (GTX 960)

The gameplay itself was a bit confusing, mostly because of the lack of feedback when I was doing damage or damage was being dealt to me.

Interrogation Room by DiscoFish 2016-12-17T19:03:00

I'm glad I didn't need to punch anyon- oh. Well then.
Great visuals and atmosphere. Really liked it.

One piece in one room by fufi 2016-12-18T13:44:00

What a fun game! The graphics are really nice, the music is fitting (and good!) and the crowd's reactions are great. Every play takes a bit of preparing in your mind, and after that,it's just chaos and hoping that the crowd likes it.

Pretty realistic, I suppose.

Scary Monsters by candeeirostudio 2016-12-18T13:31:00

Very spooky indeed. The game plays very nice and the controls are good. The art is on point, and the music is pretty good, if maybe a bit repetitive since the loop is so short. Cool stuff!

One Room With Ladders in VR by kmausser 2016-12-15T18:16:00

Didn't get past two ladders. But it was very fun throwing myself in the air frantically trying to grab something ? The grip buttons would've been a tad more intuitive for grabbing, at least as an secondary option. Still, a good game.

Feng Shui Deathmatch VR by Alex 2016-12-12T15:40:00

Fun times were had, decorating a room. With a dresser that goes haywire when you try to put the wrong things on it. The music is really fun and good light background music for decorating a room. I did get to the "you win" screen, but the opponent didn't put up much of a fight ^^

@Alex If you uploaded the game with a game breaking bug (which it seems like, according to your comment) you can fix it post-compo, according to the rules. At least there was such a rule before, can't seem to find it now. I'd say just fix the bug, if the game has been made but players can't access it because of a bug, it's better for everyone if you fix it. After all, you still did the work during the compo. <3

Dolled Up (Vive) by James Wood 2016-12-12T16:29:00

The atmosphere is chillingly creepy and the visual look is very good, especially the hands. Sadly I couldn't play it very well because of my limited space (2m x 1.5m).

The Recursive Dollhouse by Omiya Games 2016-12-18T14:09:00

Now that was a constant mind bender. The recursion mechanic is awesome, the effect is cool, and the puzzles that come with it are some mind bendy stuff. It wasn't really hard, but it was very.. brain-straining? It felt like a puzzle game alright, even if the puzzles didn't take very long to solve.

The game feels very polished, from the menu to the options to the tutorial parts. Just overall a very good puzzle game.

Tim in Time by Alexbrainbox 2016-12-17T18:13:00

The graphics and writing are good, and the game is nice overall. Only problem I had was the slightly wonky hitboxes in the prehistoric level, where the enemies' hitboxes seemed to be a bit too large, and sometimes didn't register "falling on." Still, a fun experience!

Rubi's Room by Davision 2016-12-17T19:26:00

Now that was a brain twister. The graphics are really nice and the game controls in a very good way. The effects are fitting, and both the idea and the execution are just great. The only bad part about this game is reminding me that I'm bad a rubik's cubes, hah.

One Room At A Time by Coomzy 2016-12-20T21:37:00

What a fun stealth game. The graphics are obviously a tad... minimalistic, but I found them to be quite intuitive and understood the situation at a glance even with such simplicity. The movement and controls overall are very solid, didn't happen across a single unintended action. The theme connection is not very obvious, and some music would've set the mood, but otherwise, a very good game!

Books! by Mark Ffrench 2016-12-17T18:55:00

I find the idea of this to be really cool, but I can't try it since it doesn't seem to open up in VR on the Vive.

Welcome to My Room - VR by xanderhd 2016-12-15T17:33:00

That was a fun 10 minutes spent throwing things around and listening.

The positional audio was a cool effect. Picking things up felt very good and the interactibles were fun indeed. Could've used some sound effects (like the zippo-kind-of-cube would've been more authentic with a "click" sfx), but the commentary track in the background was definitely a fun listen.

A new experience for me in VR was that I collided with things! Made moving around the cluttered room really feel like moving around in a cluttered room ? The moving speed could've been a bit faster, and it was a bit disconcerting at the start since I'm used to Unreal's editor controls which are 1:1, ie. when you drag yourself in the world, your "space grabbing hand" stays in the same position in the world.

Overall, a very nice experience, and the commentary especially was a good addition!

Manifest My by irwatts 2016-12-12T20:42:00

The locomotion is very cool, with the 1:1 kind of dragging. Only negative about that is when you fall, the acceleration causes a bit of discomfort. The plugging-in-mechanics are very cool, and the implied story is interesting. I chose, of course, the path of the benevolent robot overlord.
The hand models are really good, and the overall atmosphere of the game is great. A good game, even if a bit short.

DedecoratorVR by fdr 2016-12-17T18:35:00

Blowing things up is always fun. Sad thing is, when you get blown up yourself, especially when it's in VR and uncontrolled movement is not very comfortable. ?
So yeah, I definitely liked the blowing things up part, but I felt quite a bit of discomfort when the physics engine started throwing me around. Still, a good entry.

Kitchen Wizard Pinball by quill18 2016-12-20T21:29:00

Great stuff. The sound effects are fitting, the graphics are on point and the game feels really good. ?

Escape from the Writers Library by ferranduran 2016-12-21T21:20:00

The level design is very nice. It feels like a library, and the lack of lighting aside from the flashlight does wonders for the mood. Also, the headbobbing and footsteps add a good amount of immersion. That, and the music create a very nice tone for the game. Good stuff!

One room Ninja by indrkl 2016-12-21T21:13:00

The concept of adding stuff to the level to teach new things is really good, kind of reminds me of the way Portal teaches new mechanics. The graphics are pretty nice, and the sounds are pretty nice, especially the narration. The jumping felt a bit off, I would guess it's a combination of bad maneuverability in air + low gravity. Still, overall a very nice game.

LD38 — A Small World

STEEL GEAR CHAOS by FireSlash 2017-05-17T00:26:13Z

Excellent graphics and music, intriguing gameplay. Very hard, couldn't get very far, but the idea is interesting enough.

MiniAnna Jones! by impiaaa 2017-05-04T02:27:03Z

This is the ideal Ludum Dare game, simple and to the point. Really good tutorial levels, lovely minimalist graphics and a nice soundtrack. Overall a very good game. The only criticism I have would be the movement being a bit unintuitive sometimes, which admittedly is pretty hard to do well in the kind of isometric/tile based system this game is based on. Also, good job on managing to make so many levels during a Ludum Dare, very impressive!

Cryofailure by Neon 2017-05-05T01:38:09Z

@ryte2byte Yeah, VR is still a bit bleeding edge, I suppose

@binaryferret Thanks for the feedback! Glad the little touches (the pills & engine screen) were worth the time.

Cryofailure by Neon 2017-05-15T21:53:43Z

@filogc @rjhelms Ask, and you shall receive.

Cryofailure by Neon 2017-05-16T00:55:03Z

@bomb-x I would agree with replacing the hand, but it's just a time-budget thing combined with my lack of modeling skill. Would've definitely made a hand model if I had more time though. Thanks for the feedback!

Cryofailure by Neon 2017-05-16T23:55:06Z

@xxdoombox Thank you! The movement is choppy because I mostly moved using the teleportation feature (a necessity, since I only really have ~2x2 meters of space), which is the only type of movement in the game (well, in addition to like, actually moving IRL). It's one of the easy two types of locomotion in VR, the other one being "sliding around" which is what you see in 2D fps games, but that tends to cause a lot of nausea. In the interest of not making people sick, I went with the teleportation, but I do agree that it does kind of take away from the experience. It's still early days for VR though, one day someone will come up with something way better. And thanks again for the long comment, I really appreciate it.

Cryofailure by Neon 2017-05-21T12:08:53Z

@randomhuman @juju-adams @occultone @tddawson Thanks a lot for the feedback and ratings! Almost didn't get enough to get the final score, whew.

Chunk World by TheSand 2017-05-17T00:34:32Z

Since the game is made in Unity, I'd appreciate a Linux version. The editor supports it out of the box, just in case yo u didn't know. Doesn't run very well on Wine, the fonts don't seem to load (and highest graphics settings cause a blackscreen, I'm guessing that's related to DirectX 11 somehow). Looks pretty cool though!

Legend of the Mountain by Zathnic 2017-05-16T01:21:55Z

Can't play, the game starts pretty weird (fullscreen on both my monitors, showing just the spacey background texture) and throws an exception repeatedly. Specifically, this exception: https://pastebin.com/FhJ04TYU I'm on Arch Linux and have 64-bit OpenJDK version 1.8.0_121.

I can say the graphics look pretty nice though, from the screenshots.

Angelic Design by Joror 2017-05-14T15:49:03Z

What a cool game! I really like the idea of simulating civilizations through the ages, and being a long time EU4 player, I liked the way the map is presented (like, on a canvas). Won on the second try, but needed to exalt everyone to win, so I guess all of the civilizations are now in decline? At least they're not in chaos. One bug I found: when you win, it displays a text "{years} AC: The First Age Survived", I think you missed a replace there

Mr Antibody by DivineOmega 2017-05-04T02:35:17Z

A pretty cool idea, and excellent execution. Graphics are cute, sounds are cute, everything about this game is just cute. Except the theme, I suppose.

Can you create a space rocket in less than fifty years? by Moee 2017-05-16T16:20:38Z

What a nice game. The art is delightful, sound effects added a nice mood that changed over time (as industrialization took over the world, I imagine), and the gameplay is fun minmaxy goodness. Overall, a very enjoyable game. Creating spaceships with wind power and coffee!

Natantes Paradisum by strong99 2017-05-16T16:55:36Z

I like the graphics and the general idea of the game. Some progression and maybe more transparency on what different buildings do would be nice. But I do like it, survived through many spooky killer clouds until I just closed the tab. Good entry!

TinyWorldTD by Toby Pinder 2017-05-04T01:29:35Z

The idea is intriguing, but the game's very difficult. I imagine there is some strategy to win, but I'm not really getting past ~70 seconds (I'm guessing the counter at the end shows the game time in milliseconds?). Still, I like how the game looks, and the basic idea.

Pineshore Planet by thomz12 2017-05-19T22:29:59Z

I really like the look of the game, and how the music changes depending on which side of the planet you're looking at. There was a typo in one item's (the empty jar) name, and the ending was a bit abrupt, but otherwise the game is very polished. Really good stuff!

Lalao by ysty 2017-05-13T14:21:50Z

A very nice experience. Still not sure if I experienced it all though, the end was very ambiguous on it being the end.

Interstellar Botanist by saiodin 2017-05-14T16:12:55Z

This looks really, really cool (I wish I was this good at the space ship aesthetic  ), but alas, I'm not on Windows. Friendly request for a Linux build if possible! <3

Antagonistic : Hamburger Hill by ryte2byte 2017-05-13T13:45:21Z

Pretty entertaining, but could use a bit of tweaking if it weren't for Ludum Dare. Feedback on whether you hit an enemy when you shoot them, and a tutorial that's a bit more interactive (I missed like half of the text because I was distracted). But overall, an enjoyable experience.

A small world VR by Lloydo 2017-05-17T17:34:08Z

The game looks cool, but it doesn't run since api-ms-win-crt-string-l1-1-0.dll is missing. Really unfortunate :slight_frown:

Yours by binaryferret 2017-05-13T13:55:04Z

Minimalist, relaxing and an interesting concept. Love it.

Merienda: A VR Feeding Experience by Carlos Gonzalez Diaz 2017-05-17T17:47:04Z

I like the graphics and the music. The game itself was a bit confusing, I cruised around on the boat a bit, got a banana and ate it, found something else in the water, but didn't know what to do with it. But the aesthetic (and sitting on the floor!) was very cool, the experience was fun even though I didn't get the objective.

Space Ship: Andromeda by julianeder33 2017-05-16T01:42:36Z

I played the game through Wine on Linux, so this might be the cause, but I had one problem: the mouselook didn't seem to be working right, the view shifted weirdly at times and looking around was a bit clunky overall. Since it's a Unity game, I'd like to note that Unity can build for Mac and Linux out-of-the box, even on Personal edition. Just pick the platform from the list in the build menu, and it should be able to pop out a working binary. All that said..

I really liked the game! I explored the spaceship(/station?) a bit before finding the spooky monster or the guns, so it felt especially creepy to find the monster, like it was some alien that had inflitrated the ship or something. I was a bit confused when the monster ate me once right after I respawned, but if anything, that just added to the atmosphere. The narration by a synth voice was also a good choice. Overall, a very impressive entry, considering the amount of assets and the scale of the game. Very well done!

Comet Escape by LukeC 2017-05-04T00:34:59Z

Good game! The movement is a bit slidy and unresponsive, and I think aiming would be better if it followed the mouse rather than movement. Otherwise, it's a fun game! The size change was surprising and kind of funny in a surrealistic way. Graphics look pretty nice, and the sounds serve their purpose.

It Shakes the World Apart by lectvs 2017-05-16T16:39:45Z

What a heartwarming story. Unfortunate that the imaginary friend went away though, I liked her. The art is nice, music feels maybe a bit too cheery compared to the rest of the game, but overall, an enjoyable experience.

Look up by Vodzik 2017-05-14T15:59:52Z

Survived for almost 4 minutes. Excellent work on your first game! The music could've used some percussion and looped a bit better, and the world could've had some more stuff to make the surviving a bit more exciting. But overall, a nice game, if maybe a bit too easy. The difficulty should ramp up a bit quicker, I think. One nice touch I really liked was how I started orbiting at one point and did a few loops around the planet, that was fun

Conquery - Conquer The World! by Tanay 2017-05-13T14:31:21Z

Would've preferred WASD or the arrow keys to move, but otherwise the game was pretty nice. The idea is cool, but the controls (especially on a browser, when moving the mouse outside of the screen can be problematic) hindered my progression a bit. Oh, and the music is very nice!

English Country Garden Simulator by mralex 2017-05-04T02:43:55Z

I was excited to see a Godot game for once, but sadly it doesn't run because `./garden-sim: error while loading shared libraries: libXinerama.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory`. Installed the libxinerama package and still doesn't work. Running Arch Linux. The game looks fun, but alas, I cannot play it :slight_frown:

CHaZeS VR by thegdr 2017-05-17T17:21:42Z

Well that was a fun shooter. Just ran down the streets, never stopping moving or spraying and praying. The explosion effects add a nice over-the-top absurd feel to it, which I like. The tilt-head movement was less nauseating than I would've guessed, but it was also kind of limiting, since you couldn't really strafe. But it's a good trick, and definitely worked for the playstyle I ended up playing the game with. Good game!

Lunar Depot 38 by eevee 2017-05-14T16:38:40Z

A very cool and weird game. The gameplay feels a bit janky at times, like when you're trying to hit a jumping enemy with a slow firing rate, but that's about my only problem with the actual game. The music and the aesthetic overall are really cool and weird and interesting. Had a bit of a problem launching the game from the itch client, since it doesn't seem to have an executable, but I got it working by running it manually with löve from the terminal.

iwantout by zsoltbartok 2017-05-16T16:08:32Z

"The answer was right in front of my eyes." The best kind of a puzzle. This is a really good entry, it does a single small thing, and it does it really well. "Pixel hunting" is easy since the game consists of very big pixels, combined with the artstyle, and it all fits very well together. Good job!

5-Minute Civilization by Stevie Bushman 2017-05-16T01:07:55Z

That was very fun! The graphics are neat, the music creates a very fun and fast paced feel to the game, and the mechanics are pretty solid. Selecting/moving units feels a bit confusing at times, but since the game is so fast paced, it isn't really a problem as long as the units generally go in the general direction of the enemy. And the nukes are very fun. Overall, a really good game, I like it :ok_hand:

One last thing: might want to rewrite the of the game

LD39 — Running out of Power

this must be the place by lycaon 2017-08-03T01:23:57Z

Very intense. I love the visuals, how they flicker and blur. Music fits very well, and this game really gets the feeling of "running out of power" across. There seems to be some kind of a puzzle that you have to figure out, but I just walked off towards the horizon and didn't really get it. But overall, the game just looks, sounds and feels excellent.

Edit: Ah, should've probably read the description again before commenting, but yeah, what I thought were a very weird puzzle are probably the messages people are leaving. Well, someone might find my message somewhere in the vast unknown.

Grand Theft Battery by hnzlmnn 2017-08-03T01:06:51Z

I like the aesthetic with the laptop, sounds and battery management. Didn't really get what I was supposed to do in the game though. One amusing thing I noticed was that the browser console was *very* actively logging stuff, which would probably make an actual laptop whine quite a bit. Pretty meta.

Punchey! I was ready to call it a good game by the end of the tutorial stage, but no, there was another level! Sadly I got stuck in the second level since there were no recharging stations on the first floor and I spent all my energy trying to jump (badly). That's about the only negative thing, the power-jumps are very hard to control/aim.

Another, not really a negative thing, just a curiosity, was that I couldn't figure out how to get to the suitcase in the tutorial level. The entrance was very high, and I could only come up with two solutions: 1) be really tall or climb on a chair IRL, or 2) be very accurate with your power-jumps. I climbed a chair.

Overall, a really cool VR experience.

3% | Power Saver by iseeicy 2017-08-03T05:22:01Z

The game plays very well, and the conversation system is nice and simple. Even though the graphics are pretty simple, I like the way they're animated. The music is pretty good, and the game plays very smoothly. I managed to even clock out before running into an eldritch eye-thing in my excitement at finding the exit again.

I gotta say, the atmosphere sure is spooky, and the labyrinth sure makes me really hate the person who decided that's a good way to make offices. I think I saw a note about that, but forgot. I realized that the notes could be really useful as navigational tools a bit late, and then decided to just arrogantly not use them, so this game really gave me a good amount of appreciation for the human mind, as towards the end I was almost able to navigate the maze. The low-bit graphics and small amount of light sure makes it *really* hard to know where you're going, so great job in making the environment feel really strange and hard to get a grasp of, enhancing the spookiness of the whole thing.

I don't play many horror games, so this might just be a horror game thing, but I'm kinda amazed at how the game felt so hostile and disturbing (in a good(?) way?) The sound effects getting louder as you get near them is a good mechanic, makes the dangers more apparent. As for the mechanics, clearly the crew costs way too much to be worth it: at least I noticed much greater earnings with apparently self-operating oil rigs  Even after trying to build up some income, hiring people to each rig was too expensive, and I went into debt. Well designed balance too, wasn't too easy for me to get to the end on the first try, but once I followed a bit of strategy, I got to the end pretty easily. The tank/dps/healer trinity is tried and true fun :) I think this level of difficulty is a good balance to strike for an LD game. Love the animation and the look of the player character, the umbrella such a cool item to build the game around. The level art and music tracks are good as well, there's a pretty consistent style and I didn't really get bored of either by the time I finished. There's clearly also a very high skill ceiling, because there was a whole lot of those collectible things I didn't even get near, and I was already plenty challenged. Speaking of challenge, the randomization of the level is a nice touch, it made learning the different kinds of hazards more fun, as you weren't just running against one specific wall again and again, it was a much more smooth difficulty curve. It's really the core essence of a dungeon crawler, distilled into the perfect scope for a Ludum Dare game. Figuring out the thresholds/required items was fun trial and error, and the variety in what challenges you could have a go at between different knights really made the different stats meaningful, and thus the knights seem like their own characters. Fun to imagine a knight with a shiny hat and 3 rapiers finishing off the final quests of their adventure by swinging through some ancient ruins with a rope. Poor knights with low initial stats were doomed from the start by my impatience. Given how simple the game was mechanically, but I still really got into it, the writing was evidently pretty great.

The graphics and music fit the vibe really well, and maybe as a good example of why GBC games work so well, I thought there were more involved sound effects than there really were (now that I went back and checked). The effects do kind of interact, but not in a major way. Hitting an enemy with the same element it has been previously struck by does more damage, ie. hitting a frozen enemy with ice will do bonus damage, and in the case of ice, it also breaks the debuff. Overall, a pretty decent shmup.

Card Runner by sh1rogane 2018-05-10T13:28:49Z

Pretty fun, I like the minimalism. I was a bit confused at first about the use of the shield, but I got the hang of it pretty quickly. Good game.

We Will Rebuild by mralex 2018-05-10T13:20:17Z

At first I thought the waves were too long, then I thought they were too fast, and then I gave into the morbid reality that everyone is soon dead. Last living things on the map were autonomous turrets, now that's a statement :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: The audio was a bit mushed, maybe limit the amount of sounds playing at the same time? Other than that, good game with no real problems I noticed, but lots of explody fun.

Delve by riordan 2018-04-25T13:25:43Z

I like the feel of the game a lot. Pressing buttons repeatedly to emulate effort, and tight movement contorls make the character feel very good. Balancing all the stats was very hard, and coffee started to really feel like a requirement after few tries. Overall, a very good game. Good controls, good graphics, good feel. :ok_hand:

BreakOut Typing by Schuster 2018-04-23T12:01:16Z

It's a bit hard. Certainly two incompatible genres, so that's very on-point for the theme. Maybe a word in the middle would ease the gameplay a bit? Certainly would make the game require less foresight, as now you have to be quite good at estimating the ball's and the paddle's speeds. All in all, nice game, just very difficult.

Mettle Gear: Peace Driver by tayl1r 2018-04-23T12:13:36Z

Very nice visuals! I liked the bit at the start, set the mood nicely. The controls are a bit weird, at least I can't seem to get used to the way the card accelerates + the turning mechanism. I don't know if constant speed would've helped, or easier directional control, but that's the main problem for me. The levels are well designed, and the guards feel like guards. Genre combination is on point. Very good game with meh controls.

Sheet Music Editor Shoot'Em Up by hypp 2018-05-01T17:15:35Z

The graphics and the idea are beautiful, but playing is a bit annoying as I couldn't really grasp the up/down mechanic and the game feels a bit fast for me. What is this, wolf country?

The game is nice though, felt real tension sitting the bush, waiting for the big bad wolves to go away. Didn't manage to farm many crops though, those wolves are too hungry. Very good for your first game! Props for using Godot too.
