Nice first ludum dare entry!

odlog-oglog 2018-12-06 12:35

Nice game! It's really impressive for your first LD jam, you took the theme to an original way, very good job :)

ty-victorson 2018-12-16 20:27

I really enjoyed it! had a lot of fun with sacrificing how good the weapons were! nicely done!

fluffy-kaeloky 2018-12-16 22:51

Okay, now THAT is my kind of game !

Usually, in game jams, you don't see many shooters. That's probably because the genre was done and re-done. However, that kind of mindless fast-paced shooter is just my kind of game. I spend way, WAY more time on it than I anticipated, and I was glued to the screen all the while. You maxed out on Fun rating for me. Excellent !

Now, that's really nice and all, but there's also a few cons :

First, feedback ! I was so disappointed to not see any feedback when using the weapons or hitting the bad guys other than the quick fire animation. Feedback is an extremely important part of a game, and the player should feel rewarded for playing the game as the designer intended to. That's where feedback is critical. Your game is all about shooting an absurd amount of bad guys ? Loud crashing sounds on the shotguns, blood (Or whatever theses guys are made of) splattering everywhere and combos should be your priority.

There's also dodging. Sound for double jump, perhaps an animation on the weapon, and more air control on the double jump would be really awesome. Reward the player when using the jump, perhaps more damages/combos when shooting bad guys while in the air. Make it know that you intended it to be played that way.

Then, comes the theme's implementation. While it does make sense for an infinite game like this, just sacrificing some stats and numbers isn't very engaging. I think the theme's take could have been a little bit more creative beside just downing some stats (Perhaps actually sacrifice some gameplay elements, then, if the player does stay alive longer than that, then add stats sacrifice).

Finally, the last con I wanted to talk about, is the AI. It is easy to trick the bad guys into following you, and kill them off easily. it would be much more engaging and intense for the player if the AIs were actually thinking as a group instead of a single entity, trying to corner the player, and perhaps use projectiles. An AI Director in that case would have been a tremendous asset.

Now, I wrote such a wall of text for that game, that's just showing how much I enjoyed it, and everything I've said concerning the cons up there is only to help you make an ever better game next time. I already had a bundle of fun with this one, but it could be even better ;)

Also, I got up to wave 29. Died on wave 30, just too many bad guys x). I took a screenshot at wave 28 of them spawning :

Capture.PNG

I kept sacrificing my accuracy. At one point, it was below 1% for each gun x).

Finally, congratulations for your first Ludum Dare entry ! It was a very nice one !

hdugmag 2018-12-16 23:16

@fluffy-kaeloky WOOAAHH!! Thank you so much for that feedback, I really appreciate it! I completely agree with everything you've said and I'll take it all into consideration when diving into future projects. I'm really glad that you enjoyed it that much!

wtmk-bk 2018-12-17 02:59

DANG!!! This was a blast. Your controls and jump are awesome! The movement of the agents are predictable enough to kite but will still fake you out from time to time! Your use of theme was fantastic. I would say its lacking hit feedback and bullet effects but hats of dood this stole a few hours of my life :D ps i only down graded one gun

hdugmag 2018-12-17 03:38

@wtmk-bk @fluffy-kaeloky :face_palm: well, it turns out the UE4 build I submitted would not render the bullets smh, which is why I was confused when you suggested bullet effects, but now it should work. Thanks for your feedback!

raffe 2018-12-17 08:25

Just played your game, first of all the graphics, they are fine for the type of game this is and how much time you had. No complains there, mechanics seemed to have worked fine and I dont think I found any bugs in there. It's also nice to see a fps game in ludum dare, there is nearly none. It was also pretty catchy to play, but I had to quit since I had some stuff to do.. Might try and play it more today! Overall i think you did a neat job. :)

vademetro 2018-12-17 11:26

Managed to win till wave 10! Really nicely done! really fun to play!

dennis-kostroman 2018-12-17 13:34

Great Ludum Dare entry, interesting concept! Keep it up

sadzanenyama 2018-12-17 19:45

Cool game, very easy to trick the AI and make them form a line but obviously its not easy to make very advanced AI in such a short amount of time. I liked the way the guns spun! The shotgun design was nice, liked the lights on the side of them

simanis 2018-12-17 19:53

Sweet and simple. Wished killing enemies was more personal. A smiley face on cube goes a long way :)

Also, it's an awesome job for a first entry, keep it up!

wisstopher 2018-12-17 21:18

I loved this, I had so much fun playing it! I would like to see you work on this some more, it would be great to see it grow

zelberor 2018-12-18 13:11

Really fun game with well done movement/controls. The only con is that sacrificing accuracy does not really punish the player. Even with below 1% it still was not a big deal to kill the enemys. Overall, I had lots of fun playing your game!

syrok 2018-12-18 17:05

OOOOO YES !!!! This is a quake with boxes!) I really liked it) Respect to you guys!) I almost miss the sound of shots and it would be perfect)

andrazg 2018-12-18 20:45

i just like this kind of games...

haharo 2018-12-18 21:10

survived only 8 waves, nice entry !

mordokay 2018-12-19 03:02

This was VERY fun to play! Its hard enough to make you want to try again but not easy enough that you get bored. Controls are very good ... sound works very well and does not distract you from the actual gameplay and it kind of reminds me a lot of Quake. Great job!

annagavaldakedavra 2018-12-19 16:42

Quite fun, made it to the 10th wave.

skdf 2018-12-21 07:25

Very fun indeed, and it's refreshing to see a 3D shooter among all the other games :) But can't survive more than 10 waves cause I don't have a QWERTY keyboard :(

adultlink 2018-12-23 21:05

Pretty cool for your first time! I had fun playing it but I feel like the idea of sacrificing stats on your weapons could've had a bit more depth to it, maybe a few more different randomized options per wave.

Other than that, good job, I enjoyed it!

sorlok 2018-12-24 00:04

It was a lot of fun! I think some kind of radar would have been helpful, as well as some feedback when I got hit. Good use of theme.

riyroo 2018-12-24 00:08

I thought this was awesome!

I loved that you got to work with both guns and not just overall effects for both. It really let you start to specialize each weapon in a way you wanted, I ended up trying to keep my left (since I tend to click LMB more) high damage and high accuracy while ditching the RPM and the left accurate and fast. Don't know if it really worked out though haha.

I thought it really helped that you could run up and jump off the edge of the platform whereas they had to go down the stairs, it helped give you a bit of space if only for a little.

The theme was great, the music was great, mechanics easy to use, so I really liked it thanks for the game!!!

static-ddq 2018-12-24 05:54

Really nice game, if you can extend it have some enemies that shoot projectiles. I like the aesthetics and it has a potential to be a very fun game.

abso 2018-12-24 21:11

honestly great game here, i can tell u put effort in this :D would love for u to rate mine too <3

stan-fan 2018-12-25 17:15

It is really novel to change traditional evolution to degeneration. It is really fun, and I'm surprised that you did this game alone!

ryjcio 2018-12-25 21:16

I couldn't force it work, the application doesn't start.

cdunham 2018-12-25 23:40

I had problems opening it too, not sure why. My laptop makes a sound but there's no indication of it ever opening the game? If you can fix it and let me know I'll gladly play it! It looks pretty fun from the screenshots.

hdugmag 2018-12-26 06:51

@ryjcio @cdunham I'm really sorry to hear that, the project folder in the link hasn't changed since I uploaded it onto the Drive and apparently still works on my machine and for others (according to the comments). Maybe it could be an OS compatibility issue, or possibly Anti-virus software blocking the game from running. Let me know if its been resolved or if there's anything else. Also, does your laptop make a sound which may seem like its coming from the game?

cdunham 2018-12-26 08:23

@hdugmag I've been able to play all the other jam games fine, even other Unreal games load fine so I'm not sure what could be causing the problem. And the sound is the default windows notification sound.

joll05 2018-12-26 13:29

Nice game for your first Ludum Dare! I thought this game was really fun.

One thing that I found a little bit strange though was that when I started the game it automatically opened SteamVR, and if I tried to close it the game closed as well. I know that it probably has to do with UE4 scince I know it starts SteamVR automatically when you open the editor but I felt like pointing it out anyway.

hdugmag 2018-12-26 18:16

@joll05 Thanks for the kind words and for pointing that out! That issue could be from your end, disabling the _'Start SteamVR when an application starts'_ under the Developer tab in SteamVR may solve your problem. Otherwise, that would be on my end where I would have to disable a few defaulted plugins in UE4. Nonetheless, thanks again!

bificommander 2018-12-27 15:55

A pretty neat looking game, especially the arena. As others have mentioned, it would've been nice to have a little bit of (audio) feedback when firing or getting hit. And as for the sacrificing, I kept tanking one gun's accuracy every time and nothing else. At some point the extra 40% off of the already minute accuracy made little difference, and I had still had one long-range gun if I needed it.

aemiliu5 2018-12-27 23:51

Getting some strong DOOM vibes, nice work!

benjouille 2018-12-27 23:53

Wow that's really cool to finnaly play some fps in this ludum, good job with that. The control and shooting work well, so really smooth to play. Maybe it just miss some SFX, at lest for the shoot and the dammage. Very good entry congratz !

neon 2018-12-30 05:31

I love the visual aesthetic and the music, they're very on point :ok_hand: The dual-wielding with individual gun control is very neat, and the sacrifice mechanic is pretty cool. Could've done with some sfx. Overall, very nice!

tito 2018-12-31 14:35

Looks nice with the Unreal graphics. The running away from the cubes was fun. Music got me worked upnice! Only thing is that this game needs a special setup. My small laptop without a good gfx card couldn't start it up, so I had to switch to a pc with a better gfx card. Im glad i played it though :)
