LD42 — Running out of space

worm.exe by Linus 2018-08-16T13:22:24Z

I played the Android version.

What I liked: - It works flawlessly - Fits the theme nicely - Clear gameplay - Scoreboard, yes! - The retro visual style is quite convincing

What I would improve: - I would add more depth to the gameplay. Someone suggested to add a zip file you have to uncompress first, that could be neat. - Background music is quite repetitive after a short while, maybe just a longer loop would work.

All in all, I enjoyed it, it kept me entertained for a while, trying to beat the top score. Good job! :)

Oh, btw, there seems to be a scaling issue with the UI, it covers a small part of the desktop up top.

Ode to Resilience by Xarras 2018-08-14T19:18:21Z

This should come as no surprise, this is a really clever mechanic/idea, and I think you could flesh it out a bit more, but it is already quite good.

Get a really good narrator, some nice and mellow background music, come up with a more "poetic" poem and this will be a really good piece of art. Animations are amazing, don't touch them!

Extra points for creativity, although I wasn't able to see the connection to the theme. Good job! :)

Little Shop of Junk by auxC 2018-08-14T02:00:03Z

Aaaaghh not enough blue boxes! :D This is quite a fun little game, I specially like the aesthetics and mood. Also feels reponsive and satisfying to play, best one I've played yet.

Tiny Kingdom Builder by RenD 2018-08-21T18:28:44Z

Very cool entry, you can really see the professional touch in every aspect; audio, graphics, animations, tweening, gamepaly itself... All over the place!

It seems like the kind of game I would love to play on my phone while commuting :) The relaxing music and appealing pixel-art gets you in a really mellow mood.

Gameplay is quite enticing and keeps you coming back for one more game, honestly that's the best thing you can aim for while making a puzzle game like this one.

The "Hold" button seems to be a bit bitchy sometimes, it gets stuck. Also I see you decided not to allow the player to switch back and forth between "held" blocks, is that intended?

Like other people mentioned, I had to do a double take on the rules regarding the map flush, but it became clear after a couple games (rules are a bit on the "too long" side hehe).

Loved it, amazing job man!

Polar Panic! At the Disco by PeachTreeOath 2018-08-24T11:24:23Z

Cool game! :D

I think many people have already mentioned some things to improve like feedback for waves and iceberg movement being erratic sometimes, so I won't go any far into it.

I had a hard time being successful at keeping the little guys alive, I always seemed to push the icebergs too hard and they'd just go away, or too little and the would end up with the fishes. Some other times I just couldn't prevent one of the platforms from spinning, which was hilarious.

I was bad at the game but I had a lot of fun, so that must mean something :D

All in all, I enjoyed playing this game, it seems innovative to me, and the penguins definitely make it funny :D Although those fuckers are unable to stay still for a few seconds... Really cool groovy music too. Try appliying post-processing to this, it would look much better.

Music is still playing in my head.

Blocks by Anubhav Kashyap 2018-08-15T15:25:19Z

Not bad for 5 hours! There are some issues with the controls, and the physics of the cubes, but it's understandable.

I think rather than slowing down the cubes, maybe you could introduce a visual cue that lets the palyer know a cube is about to drop on a specific column, like some kind of highlight in a lighter red projected on the wall, or maybe flashing the cubes that are already on that column.

Hey, good job, keep learning! :)

Reptiloid Simulator by Mark Chepicov 2018-08-14T16:48:28Z

Very nice mood and setting! I'm still hummin the music btw.

Fits the theme perfectly in more than one way, it is innovative, fun to play and light-hearted. I think the main mechanic of the game is quite cool and it has potential to evolve into something even better.

I'm trying to think of something I didn't like but it's not that easy... Graphics are cool and the music is quite catchy. Oh, maybe soundfx could be improved upon.

Oh, as a piece of advice, some kind of hint is necessary when you are done with the tutorial, cause I waited for some time before realizing it was over, and I thought it bugged out.

Difficulty curve is nice as well.

Make it bigger and better, good luck! :)

Dredged by jsm 2018-08-24T10:38:19Z

I like the mood and the concept seems interesting if you fleshed it out a little more. I liked the mood and tone fo the game, and the dialogue got me interested, but the lack of instructions or explanation made it difficult, it also seemed a bit arbitrary to me which words are positive and which ones are negative.

And I think I encountered a bug as well, since at some point there was no word on the box at the bottom left corner, so I couldn't keep going. Some other times

Guys, rate some other people's games to make yours more visible! :)

How to Bee a MailBee by Hugimugi7 2018-08-15T18:37:34Z

Quite a fun game! I enjoyed the controls, they feel responsive and fluid, with one caveat, I didn't like you have to press spacebar for the whole time you want to hold on to a package.

Graphics are cool, I like the pixel-art style. If you are considering continuing development in the future, I would look into detailing the background a bit more, and replacing the floating blocks with something related to the bees theme.

Also, on the bigger levels it becomes a hassle to fly around, since you at least have to play the level a few times just to know where the packages and the people are, before you can actually attempt to complete it.

All in all, it's a nice take on the theme of the event and the execution is cute. Good job!

SWORD1 by Lawrence 2018-08-15T21:28:36Z

Pretty cool execution of a simple idea. Art and sound design fit together nicely and the gameplay is fun and fluid, and it feels satisfying to play. You reached a nice balance in difficulty too. Great job!

I can't think of anything to be improved, other than more variety in level design and enemy layouts. As of now, it's one of my favourties for its simplicity and "bluntness".

DoorsOS - RAM Simulator by johnnydalvi 2018-08-14T02:06:31Z

Great game, I loved it. Awesome humor and execution! Really makes you anxious :D

Exhaustlands by Sand-Gardeners 2018-08-14T19:13:23Z

I'm not a big fan of text-based rpgs but this one really caught me for a while. In the end I gave up on day 12 (it really isn't my thing), but I can fully understand people that enjoy this genre. As other people said, the artstyle, audio and mood in general really fit together, and that makes for a very enjoyable experience.

I like how the characters feel real in their own way, you can understand their mindset quite well. What about a small-radius minimap while the cartographer is on your team? I felt a bit lost navigating around the world, but maybe that's kind of the point anyway...

Raindrop FM forever! I didn't give it full score on theme since for me the connection isn't there imo, but every other aspect rates quite high for me. The mood it gets you into is really nice, great job! I don't know if you are considering keep working on it, but I think you should :)

Loved it!

Don't Let 'em Fall! by Jonasz999 2018-08-15T10:40:39Z

I liked the idea of the game, and it's understandable visuals and sound are not that great, especially considering you had to learn about NavMesh on the fly (if I understood correctly). The important thing is it is fun and it feels satisfying to play. Displaying the path a unit is taking is a nice touch, and you included clear visual cues for everything that's going on in the game.

Are you planning on continuing development? I think if you found a suitable theme for it, it would make it much better (herd control simulator, a new twist on Lemmings, etc).

Good job! :)

F-STOP by phantomopenboxing 2018-08-14T01:12:23Z

Nice humor, the delay on the camera felt a bit weird at the beginning but got used to it. Weird mechanics! :D

The Virus! by DogSquad 2018-08-14T01:27:10Z

Holy shit those viruses are creepy. Nice little silly game :D

Meteor Shower by beanslasher 2018-08-14T04:53:01Z

Solid simple game, the idea is simple enough to just five into it, which is good, but it just falls short after a while. It does have potential do be much more interesting imo tho, keep working on it and expanding the complexity and you'll learn a lot :)

Space Warehouse by meatpudding 2018-08-17T09:12:44Z

"A beam? Sure, just let me take this squiggly from you. Big C? No sorry, I'm out of those, but I'll buy your space fork".

Fuck the empire... But hey at least they are paying you.

This is a very engaging game. I started playing yesterday night but I had to put it down since I was running out of battery on my phone and I didn't want to lose progress. Then I woke up today and playing haha.

This is more of a management game than a "Running out of space"one, which is cool, since I enjoy these (is still fills the theme perfectly). I never had the feeling I was short on storage space, but maybe that was me playing it too safe.

I enjoyed every part of it, and I can see you felt the need to introduce some mechanics to make it more challenging (the empire specially). Meteors are also cool, and the combination of both prevented me from selling a big H a couple of times. It was a good decision.

The design is solid and the execution is pretty nice. Everything comes together quite nicely, since I found myself addicted to it very soon.

Took me a bit to figure out how it works, cause I thought I could only buy what was indicated in the top-left box at the beginning, but the it all made sense.

Oh, btw it also took me around an hour to realize I could rotate objects by holding and touching again, whoops.

I believe if you improve the visuals to make it shiny and bloomy it could really be well received as a mobile game.

In the end I had to stop myself and decided to quit after I reached 1000 clams.

Congratulations, this is a great game!

@sciman101 Thank you so much! A couple bugs here and there but I'm really happy with the result :)

@bernhard Hey thanks so much for your feedback! I'm having no issues unpacking the .rar with 7-Zip, but I hear you, I just replaced it with a .zip.

3396?! Holy shit I'm shit at my game XD

Regarding unlimited score. The antivirus (the flashing red cross of death) should be able to catch you when you can't move anymore, but I'm aware there are a couple bugs here and there, and sometimes the antivirus just doesn't work. Oh well, just like in real life :D

Survirus by AdultLink 2018-08-14T03:18:32Z

@bernhard Yeah I can play without looking 90% of the time, but at some point locked sectors start piling up and it all goes south haha. Looks like you are good at it, and I really appreciate your comments!

@mowztouch Thank you so much! :)

Survirus by AdultLink 2018-08-14T15:54:52Z

@handle Hey thanks for your feedback! Yeah that is intended, you are not supposed to be able to jump from a locked sector to another locked sector with a different color, but you can always move to/from unlocked (gray) or flashing sectors :)

Glad you liked the gameplay and visuals!

@erebus Thank you for giving it a shot, and for the valuable feedback! :)

Survirus by AdultLink 2018-08-14T16:22:32Z

@chronodrax Thanks for the feedback! Yeah there are some fringe cases in which things dont work out the way they are expected to, I'll definitely work on ironing those things out since I'm planning on continuing development.

Thank you for the tips on balance. I have some ideas on how to make it more challenging and diverse :)

Survirus by AdultLink 2018-08-14T16:25:50Z

@adrianfl Thank you! That's what I was going for :)

Survirus by AdultLink 2018-08-14T19:22:36Z

@outstar Yeah I really need to implement a tutorial in which I can introduce all the elements one by one, otherwise it is just too much information at once, buuut not enough time :(

Thanks for your feedback! I'll make sure to pimp out the page haha :D

Survirus by AdultLink 2018-08-15T14:43:43Z

@foolmoron Hey thanks for your elaborate comment! I'm working on ideas to improve visual clarity, cause I feel like it's a bit too confusing right now sometimes.

Survirus by AdultLink 2018-08-15T14:44:38Z

@flubz Hey, you are not supposed to click on the arrows, you are supposed to use the directional arrows on your keyboard. I agree rules and controls might be confusing. Thanks!

Survirus by AdultLink 2018-08-15T17:06:11Z

@jorbits You are absolutely right! And the first one to mention that too haha. Yeah I need to come up with some other mechaninc to prevent that :)

Thank you for playing and for your feedback!

Survirus by AdultLink 2018-08-15T17:45:49Z

@bigbosserndog Thanks for playing it! Yeah I agree, too much information all of a sudden, I've gotta work on a tutorial screen. I really like the idea of a giving a hint everytime you die, thanks!

Survirus by AdultLink 2018-08-21T16:57:37Z

@devio Thank you for playing my game! I loved your chill stream, I hope to see you streaming more regularly :) I'll be working on a post-jam version and I'll probably add a tutorial. Good luck man! :)

@eric-schmiel I like to think remembering the color code is part of the "git gud" process haha, but I can see it being annoying to most people that play it for the first time.

I feel the exploit mechanic is nice but it could be improved to benefit the player even more. I was thinking instead of triggering the effect the moment you pick it up, you could choose when to use it. This way the player has more of a choice in regards to strategic playing, and it's not just reacting to the board.

Thank you for your thoughts! :)

@jonasz999 Ahh I'm so sorry about the UI scaling issues! :( I must admit resolution concerns were not at the top of my priorities by the end of the jam. Thanks for making me aware of it! :)

@lootgrounds I'm seriously thinking about a mobile release after a few tweaks and gameplay improvements. Thank you for playing! Glad you liked the visuals.

@xphere Thank you for your kind words! :D

@linus Yup, definitely needs a tutorial or some other way to ease the player into it. I also need to revisit the no-jumping-between-different-color-locked-sectors (phewww) rule. It might be a bit confusing at first, but for now it is necessary for the game to end! Otherwise you could just move around for as long as you wanted :D Thank you!

Are there any issues whatsoever with the Linux version? No slowdowns or visual glitches?

Survirus by AdultLink 2018-08-21T17:25:20Z

@peachtreeoath I was going for a tight and staisfying gameplay so I really appreciate your kind words. Thank you for your support :)

@auxc Yeahhh I need to find a way to make it more intuitive, or I can just say it's part of the learning process :D Thank you for your thoughts! I'm glad you found the exploit mechanic fun! I also think it's quite nice and it feels good when you pick one up just before the antivirus fires :D It could use some improvements tho.

@tommytheitguy Thank you for your feedback! :)

@kiirohanabi Yup, sector real-estate is at a premium haha! On the antivirus point, I completely agree, it should not prevent you from pickinp up an exploit, and regarding sectors, it also shouldn't allow the countdown to continue, it should just pause it and resume after it fires I feel like. You are absolutely right about player frustration, unfair mechanics are never fun and drive players away.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts :)

@firesplash-entertainment Hey thanks for playing my game on stream, I hope I can catch you online again! Those two suggestion will definitely be considered for future versions, especially starting with just one color. Thanks!!

Survirus by AdultLink 2018-08-21T22:04:28Z

@linus It must be working properly then :D Thanks

XORN: The Fallen God by ThibaultAr 2018-08-21T18:01:26Z

Hey, great game guys!

Visuals are very clean, and it's great that you added visual cues for everything that goes on (enemy spawning, crystal spawning, block falling, etc). Gameplay feels nice, and I like the mechanics you've got going on. Audio is also good, it fits! :)

Special commendation for the UI, it really feels professional (are you guys actually professional? :P), and the fact that you can choose between those two keyboard layouts.

I didn't know what to do with the cyrstals at first, I thought I had to hit them and then I could buy upgrades.

On the other hand, the attack animation took a while to get used to. For some reason it seems the visual of it does not completely align with the actual hitbox.

Regarding balancing, I often found myself with not enough money to upgrade the weapon or repair blocks, even though I was killing all the enemies I could (they fall down quite often as well, so you don't get their coins).

There is actually no way for the player to sustain themselves, at some point you just die but you didn't have a chance to play it correctly. Increasing the coin reward / spawning more enemies could alleviate the issue.

You get a high rate from me! Great job! :)

Spar! by Cryovr 2018-08-14T00:59:00Z

I like the damage mechanic, it allows you to get out of sticky situations. It feels fun and satisfying to play! The movement however feels a bit slow in general, might be worth experimenting with making both player and enemy move faster :)

Full of Thoughts by Pedro M Marangon 2018-08-14T01:38:25Z

Nice concept, although execution seems a bit lackluster to me (too simple). Good job tho! :)

Grimder by CraigDuth 2018-08-14T01:43:03Z

Upload some screenshots here! :)

Grimder by CraigDuth 2018-08-16T10:33:41Z

Ohhh goodie!

I'm impressed with this game! Very cool execution and unique concept. You took the theme but you didn't actually made it the core of your game, which is refreshing after playing so many games in which you just have to avoid falling off a platform, or getting hit by whatever.

What I liked: - Simple, clean UI - Great humor! I loved reading the cause of death - Laika :D - Color palette. I think it could be beneficial to add some more colors to the design, but it is actually quite good already - Soundfx - Level of polish

What I think could be improved, not much actually: - More "deeds". They get repetitive after a while. I'm on a road trip right and I can suggest "Frequently complains about other drivers" - The "It's a match" popup takes a bit too long to go away. Maybe you could try making it easier to skip, or just show it as a notification similar to the one that shows up when you make a mistake (but bigger, and I would keep the portrait). - Lack of background music. What about some light-hearted classical music?

All in all, this is a very good entry! Congratulations to all of you! :)

Inventory Story by FredMaaktGames 2018-08-18T09:06:54Z

Played Android version.

Really nice execution of a simple idea!

The audio, models and mood in general remind me of games like Medievil and Banjo-kazooie, and that's a great thing :)

I had fun playing this, and I think it was a good design decision to make monsters appear from the sideand give the player the option to peek. This way you still keep most of the screen available for the backpack while allowing to check for monsters, all while adding one more choice the user has to make.

Like others have mentioned, relying on physics the whole time makes it unreliable sometimes. For instance whenever I wanted to throw something away after I placed the weapon, the weapon would fall off and I would get hit haha. I never had the feeling I was running out of space tho, maybe Mr. Checkpoint is coming up too often?

All in all it is a very fun game, and I love the style and funky mood, great job guys :)

MapleOS : Backup Royale by megaqueijo 2018-08-24T11:07:59Z

Holy shit I enjoyed that a lot more than I should have haha

Amazing job selling the mood guys, audio and graphics both are perfect! I can tell a lot of polish went into this, specially visuals, with all the image effects you applied. It really works together really well.

Just to nitpick a bit, I think the pile of disks bugged out at some point in one of my playthroughs, since I wasn't able to use floppys from the top (it would just hover when holding mouse1, I couldn't move it around), just from the bottom.

All in all, I really enjoyed the goal of the game and the gameplay itself, and great job in the humor department haha :D

Amazing, great work!

Memory Muncher by AddVector 2018-08-24T10:52:09Z

Cool idea! I could see this working if you juice it up and make the movement smoother overall, I can see you might have gone for abrupt movement but it feels too jarring for me, maybe look into smoothing out the camera movement while keeping the player movement the way it is.

I liked the gameplay, although it might become a bit repetitive after a while. I enjoyed the visuals and audio, it was a good experience! I had no issue with the color palette. Good job :)

Hammer Dongers by Crave 2018-08-21T17:36:26Z

It's a shame the fact it is a 1v1 game is preventing people from playing it (in my opinion) because this is really fun! Played it with my brother and we had a blast :)

Some other people mentioned upgrades and such, but I think this kind of game works better the simpler it is. Yeah maybe a couple of special items spawning randomly (and not too frequently) could be nice, but shifting the focus to fighting for objects too much would detract from the sheer fun of destroying terrain. The core mechanic is just fun! :D

I didn't experience any bugs, other than sometimes falling down while on terrain (but that's just a matter of tweaking colliders). I love the pixel-art, and the animations. Really cool, congrats! (some non-distracting backgrounds could really add to the visuals tho).

All in all, it makes for a fun couch-game, I could see it being played at house parties. If you are considering continuing development take a look at Airconsole, I think this game would fit perfectly in their platform. One of the best games I've played! :)

DataSkream by Sollara Games 2018-08-14T01:52:33Z

Really liked the aesthetics and specially the mood the game gets you into. It's sometimes hard to tell blocks apart since they are shadeless, might be worth looking into outlining them or something. Fun little game! :)

Boxed by Devio 2018-08-15T14:41:25Z

Took me a while to actually figure the controls even tho it was stated in the main menu. It's not clear what the radius for pickup up a box/giving a box to a customer is.

I think visuals in general could be improved. Visual cues would be a nice addition.

Other than that, it's quite cool and it's fun for a while, and pretty nice for a compo submission. Good job! :)

Stuck! by chkkll 2018-08-15T15:35:52Z

Great concept and execution, it's quite unique. Visuals and sound are spot on, no complaints here. I would've like seeing some variety in level design, I think there are some nice possibilities here.

Other than that, the game is absolutely relatable haha, you are scoring high on fun and mood :D

Nimble in the Dark by Tkap 2018-08-14T01:19:35Z

Simple and fun :)

It is however a bit difficult to differentiate the stars from the projectiles, and it's not that fair that you can't really see projectiles coming from outside the play area.

LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Inked warrior by Artem Kuzhenkin 2018-12-27T12:44:26Z

Liked the aesthetic and SFX. Gameplay is straightforward (maybe a bit too much, I was waiting for some more depth) and fun. Good job!

Destructor 32 GMS by Erik Brunnstrom 2018-12-28T12:06:32Z

This is an amazing work! Let me start with that. I really really enjoyed it, kept me wanting to try again.

I can see you put quite a bit of work in this, and it shows, because it's really well rounded, from gameplay to graphics and sound. Astounding, amazing immersion! :)

It reminded me of "Keep talking and nobody explodes". There are a few common aspects to it and you also gotta follow instructions to achieve a goal. I believe you could polish this up a bit, maybe add a couple more mechanics to it, make it co-op friendly and publish it if you wanted.

If I had to nitpick, I'd say telling signals apart is quite hard. Do you have actual experience with radio communications such as these? It was difficult for me to find the required signal during the antenna positioning phase.

Oh I ran into a bug btw. On one of my attempts I ended up launching the missile with just a couple seconds left, and this happened, I guess both outcomes overlapped. I wasn't able to click "retry" or "exit", had to kill the game and restart.

sss.png

Amazing, best game I've played.

bamb by fasterthanlime 2018-12-18T21:25:05Z

Great work!

BulletHealth by Rugbug_Redfern 2018-12-27T13:41:58Z

Hey, pretty cool one! Best one I've played so far. Lots of polish, you achieved a lot with so little. Cool animations, nice cartoony look and these little cubes' movement haha!

Movement could use a some tweaking, I experienced the twitchy mouse behaviour as well. Great job!

Glow It Alone by egawag 2018-12-28T11:12:40Z

It's a shame it's so short, I was enjoying playing it!

You guys did a job on delivering the experience; audio, graphics, and gameplay they all fit together really nicely for a mysterious atmosphere. Wall-jumping is a bit frustrating, since it seems you have to wait for a bit after touching the wall before jumping again, or you'll fall, but it's not a huge deal.

Again, very good job on putting all the pieces together, and nice attention to detail :)

Ahhhhhh shit I was having fun, and then it ended! :(

Quite entertaining and light-hearted little game. Not much to say other than good job!

Hey, I enjoyed playing this game. The way you tell the story is quite interesting and definitely fits the gloomy atmosphere you were going for, it managed to get me involved, and even made me slightly depressed, so it worked! Great job :)

Pretty cool for your first time! I had fun playing it but I feel like the idea of sacrificing stats on your weapons could've had a bit more depth to it, maybe a few more different randomized options per wave.

Other than that, good job, I enjoyed it!

This one should have more ratings! I like the meta-ness, and presentation is top-notch. Like others have mentioned, it seems a bit random sometimes, although I was able to make the right choices on my first try msot fo the time, so it's not that bad.

You are getting top scores from me cause I'm a sucker for simple, well-polished games and aesthetics :)
