I like the idea ^^ I was hoping to be able to box select xD

2018-08-12 21:20

Nice idea! I was thinking about running out of memory as a potential game idea but didn't go with it.

Graphics are decent, music has a definite Tetris feel to it, no bugs that I observed. Gameplay is a little simple, but gets the idea across.

I'll come back to rate once ratings are open!

**Edit:** Said I'd be back! Dropped a rating.

hadermite 2018-08-12 21:50

Very creative and interesting idea!

artbohr 2018-08-12 21:55

Fun idea, I like the art, box select is really lacking, haha ^^. Good Job.

Very nice game! I included it in my compilation video series of the Ludum Dare 42 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/wNBCLkIQclA

I liked the idea, but I wasn't clear on what to do at first. I thik it could work well with some variation, powerup types files or similar. Saying that, what was presented was well made, there wasn't a frustrating moment in terms of controls. I found it quite easy once I got to a certain point. Maybe the virus could have moved the sorting folders to add difficulty.

@tetra thanks for playing and recording it , I agree the game is quite easy but I guess I just felt like making a easy game that is fun for a couple of minutes.

stroe-andrew 2018-08-15 20:51

A very nice idea! Good game :)

neowhoru 2018-08-15 20:55

nice game idea - also a good gameplay. Graphics are just from windows and default icons i think so could be critical for a compo game ? who knows^^ cool soundtrack btw. :D

comenoha 2018-08-15 20:58

I think the idea is interesting, but the gameplay gets repetitive pretty quickly. Now this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I think that there is a period of time at the beginning where not much is happening. It was fun for a few minutes, though.

linus 2018-08-15 21:05

@neowhoru thanks for the feedback, I did use the windows xp icons and background as reference but the art is handdrawn and not copied so that should be okay for compo

neowhoru 2018-08-15 21:10

than this should be no problem and it's just a derivative work :D

bibilega 2018-08-15 23:18

Such fun idea =D And actual theme with place on desk. Thank you for fun!

zeriver 2018-08-16 02:13

Super simple yet extremely entertaining game. I really like how different files take different space on the disk, it adds a lot of depth in the game since when you are slowly getting overwhelmed you have to prioritize different files. It also is pretty intuitive and makes sense from computer user perspective. The graphics stylized for Windows are, well, pretty obvious choice for this kind of game :D but still it was really well made. The generic background is fine, maybe it's just me but after hearing very similar tunes (or sometimes the same) many times in different games, kinda kill the immersion. One thing that i would suggest is changing mouse cursor when mouse is over the file, it's a small thing yet i think it would add a lot. Anyway. game is really great, simple but super fun and challenging. Excellent choice for Ludum Dare.

BTW: shame there isn't a quick way to see top scores, maybe adding that to main menu would be a good idea? Well i certainly would want to see everyone that i got the first place ;)

nam-nguyen 2018-08-16 03:39

Simple idea that works together with the theme within the game: cleaning windows desktop (scoring humor). I think a cool intro that makes fun of how people have so much trash in the desktop would add a lot more entertainment to the game and make everyone relate to it. Other thing I thought could be added is a zip file that you need to unzip and inside it has more content. This add more depth to the game because zip file has smaller storage than the total storage it has, so there is more to prioritizing. I think its a very promising entry, keep it up!

borys 2018-08-16 12:42

Really fun idea and simple gameplay. Good time waster. Nice job!

adultlink 2018-08-16 13:22

I played the Android version.

What I liked: - It works flawlessly - Fits the theme nicely - Clear gameplay - Scoreboard, yes! - The retro visual style is quite convincing

What I would improve: - I would add more depth to the gameplay. Someone suggested to add a zip file you have to uncompress first, that could be neat. - Background music is quite repetitive after a short while, maybe just a longer loop would work.

All in all, I enjoyed it, it kept me entertained for a while, trying to beat the top score. Good job! :)

Oh, btw, there seems to be a scaling issue with the UI, it covers a small part of the desktop up top.

Zeriver's review is spot on, the difference in points really helped shake up gameplay and force you to make decisions. I will say I thought the game was dragging on a bit until the first worm came (and I accidentally let it run too long). The pacing was much better around that time, I think you could shorten the early section a bit as players shouldn't need too much warmup time on this. I like the overall aesthetic and I've always found it funny how VLC picked one of the most recognizable objects in the world as their icon, so I always think about that when I see one on the street...

raziyya 2018-08-18 09:43

A very simple game but so compelling. The noise of the worms really instills dread and the point difference between the different files prevents spamming. The clicking and dragging of the files is done really well. Cool game!

felipedev 2018-08-19 17:00

One of the best "Running out of space" game concepts from what I have seen so far! I liked a lot the scoreboard. The graphics suits well. Music too, but a bigger loop would be nicer. I suggest you to speed up the time for difficult gain, since the beginning can be a little boring when I was trying to get a high score.

Anyway, good job!

saoi-games 2018-08-20 04:40

Thank you for sharing your game with me. I played it on my stream tonight at https://www.twitch.tv/saoigames

I have rated your game, but all of my feedback was captured in the stream. It was close to the end.

You can hear my comments in the archive at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/299357576?t=08h13m02s

linus 2018-08-20 21:08

@saoi-games thanks a lot for playing my game, you made some very good points that I didn't consider when developing my game. I learnt a lot about how you as a player interact with my game and I hope I can implement that knowledge in my upcoming Ludum Dare games

eptwalabha 2018-08-20 21:10

Nice take on the theme. It's a little repetitive, but I enjoyed playing your game. Good job.

chadrbanks 2018-08-21 00:35

Win XP, classic. I like the idea and direction it was going. Very nice.

abhis1kadian 2018-08-21 10:52

@linus I loved the classic take on the theme, and i do love classics. Gives me nostalgia. Nice work man. Please do play our game and leave ur feedback and ratings.

abhis1kadian 2018-08-21 10:54

@jupiter-hadley Hey man please do try my game too, its our first ludum dare game jam. Really appreciate that.

huvaakoodia 2018-08-30 20:29

Simple, effective idea; and a dexterity challenge again?! Unfortunately this does not seem like an improvement; I liked Age of Pacman more as it sticks to its strengths.

Here the worms appear really late and then in such numbers that the memory fills up nearly immediately. I can see the desktop clutter working out better if all the files had an affect on neighbouring spaces and files so that the worms aren't the main target all the time. More dynamism needed, that is.

The graphics are mushy, I would have much preferred actual Windows XP visuals, you can disable the graphics rating category after all. Not to tout my own horn too much, but back in January we made a Win 95 inspired, hacking themed puzzle with the visuals ripped directly from the source; looks and feels authentic as a result. If you are interested [take a look](https://teamsneaky.itch.io/sneak-95).

The music isn't any better than last time. I've heard this generator before, and it is no good... Maybe look into composing your own stuff? Making a simple beat combined with a melody (based on a scale, plz) is not that hard after a bit of researching.

It works, yet could do a lot of tweaking. Audio-visuals also took a hit this time. Keep challenging yourself in that department.

linus 2018-08-31 21:16

@huvaakoodia Hahaha I know that I tend to repeat myself and implement similar ideas and use the same tools :stuck_out_tongue:, I guess I keep telling myself that if I keep doing the same concept for Ludum Dare I will eventually get better but honestly when I think about it I really should try out new concepts and ideas so I can improve as a hobby game developer.

About the graphics and music, thanks for giving me honest feedback. It is super helpful and now I know what I need to work on in the future. I've been doing Ludum Dare for about 4 years and I feel my progress have slowed down a bit. I've looked back at my timelapses for Ludum Dare and seeing what I spend the most time doing, quite fascinating how I've started spending less time on what I am bad at and more time at what I think I do the best.

By the way, I checked out the puzzle game with windows 95 graphics. Great example on how small details makes the game more fascinating. I'll try to implement that concept into my future games.

Thanks for always giving me so sincere criticism. I appreciate it very much!
