I love this.. the dancing penguins and polar bears killed me. Love it.

elykyevrah 2018-08-13 20:29

I couldn't stop laughing while trying to actually play the game long enough to get past the first few waves of animals. Well done.

sylvie 2018-08-14 02:42

Pretty funny and cute game! I don't really know how to get high scores though, it seems pretty hard to stop the animals from falling off.

mistersdevelopment 2018-08-14 02:46

Really funny game! Like the disco theme, graphics, and audio!

katie-dover 2018-08-14 02:46

5/5 for humor! The whole thing is absurd - in a brilliant, "this is so fun" sort of way. I especially loved the dancing penguins, the polar bear towers, and the disco music to tie it all together. The controls are a little bit hard to get used to, but once you do, it's pretty straightforward. Great job!

beanslasher 2018-08-14 02:52

ALL 5's Across the board!!!! I thought this was a very original idea, I think you all as a team did a wonderful job making the graphics and the low poly water! I really enjoyed the music, good job Derek63, You did a wonderful job on the music/sound. I am a musician as well, and think it was very well done! The concept was on point, and my girlfriend and I played this for a couple hours trying to get all the bears to stay on the ice! Well Done! Absolutely pleased, and hope you all return in December, cant wait to see what you can do next time!

crazi456 2018-08-14 03:06

Hilarious! Loved every bit of it :D

goutye 2018-08-14 05:22

Really cool mood! It was really fun! Good jobs on the waves as well, they are great to see! Rank 4 so far!

ceasar 2018-08-14 06:13

I seem to be having some trouble with starting the game. At first it wouldn't let me press start and now i can't seem to connect to the website :(

fizzpowmike1 2018-08-14 06:23

@ceasar Sorry about that, we seem to have rare cases of this and we aren't sure what is causing it, could you give us a little info about your OS and internet connection?

ceasar 2018-08-14 06:39

@fizzpowmike1 im using windows 10, chrome and i live in Australia (if that helps) but im not entirely sure about my internet connection

mowztouch 2018-08-14 15:49

haha, nice little game. Controls are pretty unpredictable ^^ sometimes the iceberg go the opposite way to what i want ^^ cool entry :)

drbrick 2018-08-14 17:04

Very fun game with an interesting concept. Seeing the animals come riding in on stacked made me laugh. Also I enjoyed the disco theme.

2018-08-14 17:05

Ridiculously goofy, I love it! The music is excellent, and I love the look of the water. Only issue I have is that the icebergs don't always seem to move in the direction I'd expect them to. Overall really funny and enjoyable!

batlordz 2018-08-14 17:41

A very funny game! Gameplay and music are very great. Nice job!

agecaf 2018-08-14 19:48

I'll be honest... I fear the winning strategy is to just do nothing? It seems as soon as I touch water everything goes to hell. (Also, they're circles, so any click input shouldn't make the circles turn faster??)

Having said that... Just looking at it is entertaining enough! The sound effects, the music, the way the penguins and bears wiggle, the way they fall off icebergs, how they fall like pinballs if you push the floor... It makes it all so hilarious

local-minimum 2018-08-14 20:39

I enjoyed myself even if I had a hard time coming up with a successful strategy. My best bet was to get some penguins lying down on the side as that made them not jump into the water. But other than that, I think I would really have liked some way to affect the direction of the spinning of the ice. And maybe be able to make a larger wave by holding button pressed longer and/or having the force decrease slower by distance. Anyways fun and interesting game mechanics.

danielbarca 2018-08-14 21:36

I loved the humor! It's very fun. The gameplay has room for improvement but it's quite fun overall.

peachtreeoath 2018-08-15 00:20

@agecaf @local-minimum yep that was something we were still playing with at the last minutes, which was getting a good "meta" down. I think the best way right now is indeed to do very careful clicks/nudges to get things in place, though you will need aggressive clicks to save icebergs from going offscreen - each one is precious. I had the same thought about how cool it would be if the meta was to knock animals on their sides so they wouldn't run off but it's hard to do that reliably in this version.

pkenney 2018-08-15 02:30

Wow! There was like an immediate "joyous celebration" feel going on here that smacked me in the face right away and then stuck around. Everything worked toward it: the fantastic grooving tune that made me start bobbing my head, and which starts with that awesome long climbing note before the bass drops; the sparkling faceted water that's really interesting-looking and almost dancing itself; the disco ball; the grooving animals with their silly dances and sounds. Everything works in harmony around this feel.

Gameplay-wise I did struggle a bit, and even after a lot of tries I could only get "Disco Inferno" level, which is only second-best. I felt like something was off a bit, and conducted some quick experiments on the first block, and I convinced myself that the mouse click was actually registering about 2 inches lower on the screen than where I was clicking, but maybe it was all in my head. If I could have added an enhancement, I know hands down what it would be: the water, which seems to already oscillate on a wave, would reflect the impact of my click. I'd love that if I could click and see the wave ripple out, as I think it would get me much more grounded in the mechanical interactions. Allow me a second enhancement and I'd have the ice discs pitch a little with the wave, even if it was only cosmetic. Oscillate them to the beat and get those things dancing!!

I also struggled a bit with the way that when 2 discs join, yes their area gets bigger but the outermost perimeter edge I think snaps in a little, so sometimes the act of joining is exactly what drops your dudes in the water.

None of this really mattered because the jam was ON here, and precision tactics were not the point.

Mission accomplished, because I definitely groove out big-time to this one, well done and congrats!

2018-08-15 03:27

So simple, yet highly addictive. Something I've learned to expect when I see @akaSurreal and FizzPow in the credits. I Meant to play for a few minutes... an hour later I'm hitting Replay One More Time to try and get rank 5/5!

peachtreeoath 2018-08-15 04:35

@pkenney oh crap I think you're right about the click raycast being set too low. I actually couldn't figure out why the clicks were off centered, especially when you click above an iceberg near the top it goes flying up lol. And you're totally right about the juice, we had some extra physics things in the works but they were so buggy we had to cut it. Thanks for the feedback and great catch on the disco ball mirroring the water :)

awix 2018-08-15 07:54

A good game idea, the music should be improved. The graphics are good. Try our game too, maybe you'll like it)

aug 2018-08-15 23:55

The title's awesome, and I loved how all the aspects added up and made a game with a cohesive style. A couple of issues I had were that when you try to make a wave on/under an iceberg, it'll only go up in the Y direction, and that my waves weren't visible. The score I got also felt out of my control most of the time - spinning seemed random, and sometimes I would lose all my animals just because I didn't get good enough spawns. I love the concept you came up with though, it's addictive and fun despite my complaints.

thecritterscove 2018-08-16 00:54

It's hard to play this game without at least a chuckle or snort. I got up to 26 animals. My main criticism is the lack of visual feedback for the waves.

Otherwise, it's a surprisingly fun game for how short it is. Probably also the first time I've scored a game so high for humor. Plus I love the music. For some reason the mood kind of reminded me of the Katamari games.

zeriver 2018-08-16 01:53

Hahahha that is a really humorous game! I really like the whole arctic disco idea! The music and little dance moves just go together so well, the premise is just hilarious. The art style has a good colour pallet and animals models with their animations are cute, btw cool to see you guys trying out 3d for LD. The gameplay is pretty hectic and i like it, although at times it feels like it mostly comes down to RNG rather than my skill of crashing together icebergs (and knocking off everyone on them). Still it was a really enjoyable short game, great game for Ludum Dare!

kodiqi 2018-08-16 06:44

You can't help but like this game after the first 6 seconds. The music and the dancing animals are great, lots of fun. The actual game part of it isn't that strong, which is a shame. Maybe the physics were more hassle than they were worth? Manipulating the waves didn't feel very intuitive, with some issues such as clicking at the top of the screen sending the waves in the wrong direction.

Just thinking out loud but maybe it would be more engaging if your clicks grew new ice patches, rather than creating waves, so you just had to build a path to stop the dancing animals from falling into the water. After all, they are so caught up in the rhythm to watch where they are going! Wow "rhythm" is a weird word.

peachtreeoath 2018-08-16 06:52

@Kodiqi personally I've always thought "weapon" is pretty strange, just stare at it for a while...

maybelaterx 2018-08-16 14:34

This was utterly hilarious. Loved it! My only gripe was I had difficulty getting the caps to move down - they all ended up sliding off the top of the screen at light speed.

Great job!

m-1 2018-08-17 09:07

When I accidentally sent an iceberg off-screen, killing all animals, I got "Rank 3 of 5, That's the way I like it". YOU MONSTER!

Other than that, well done, had fun.

smbe19 2018-08-17 17:38

Awesome idea and very nice art and music. I just find the controls to be quite difficult. Sometimes when I clicked above an iceberg it moved upwards instead of downwards and kicking all animals off it in the process. But otherwise quite fun. I assume the towers of ice bears is on purpose ;)

abhis1kadian 2018-08-19 05:39

@peachtreeoath I dig the graphics and the art style, even liked the gameplay but it would be nice to show the wave generating. Although the game experience is nice.

simonhutchinson 2018-08-19 20:45

I. love. this. Fantastic idea, and great execution. If you do any post-jam revisions, I might look at the controls a little bit, but really, I think the looseness is kind of part of the game.

Fantastic overall package with graphics, sfx, and music. Great work.

geekdrums 2018-08-20 11:11

I wanna try this game but... Can you export a PC(windows) version of this? (browser version is too slow & can't see anything)

mikixen 2018-08-21 04:51

A really nice game - loved the graphics and audio! I think the concept of controlling with the water is unique, although I took a few runs to realise that we can combine ice sheets! Reached Disco Inferno after a few runs. Perhaps more specific physics could be added to the game, such as moving slowly when clicking and moving quicker when it's a click and drag on the water - so that we can control our ice sheets better :)

cristihkj 2018-08-22 07:39

Great game! Very cool and interesting! :D

bobo-oh 2018-08-22 08:01

this is a really fun and innovative game :)

lagrume-masque 2018-08-22 13:20

This is a really nice and funny game. Concept is great and dancing animals are really cute. The music is great too. I liked that the games were really short. Nice take on the theme! Good job!

suchista 2018-08-22 15:15

I love the art and the mood! Great simple entry

kiirohanabi 2018-08-22 16:01

I engaged myself to play any game that has "disco" in its name... I was not disapointed haha!! Very fun game with a great music (kudos to the musician!)

The only thing I'd say is that it looks like I can only make the situation worse by clicking, maybe a little feedback like a wave or something could've helped ^^'

wheffle 2018-08-23 03:30

That was way more fun than it should have been. Had me laughing every time a stack of polar bears would appear and fall over. Great work! I would have liked to see some kind of feedback when you clicked to make a wave, like, a wave. But that's a tiny nitpick. Awesome entry, had a ton of fun!

lilkrit 2018-08-23 11:52

Very "cool" game. The music is nIce. Really good idea, but the controls are not perfect - sometimes I was sure the icecap would move faster or slower, it seems like they aren't centered properly? Also as previous comment said, we need some kind of feedback for the waves!

meatpudding 2018-08-24 11:15

Cool, cute, confusing. These are just some of the awesome things about Polar Panic! At The Disco.

I think the art and modeling was really nice. The colours and environment were pleasing. The mechanics were fairly simple once you get used to them. Was a bit confused about where to click and how dragging would affect spin. At first I was clicking the ice burgs which has a weird effect but once you figure out to click on the sea it's okay.

Not much more to it than that. Simple and fun. I ranked 2/5 in the game.

adultlink 2018-08-24 11:24

Cool game! :D

I think many people have already mentioned some things to improve like feedback for waves and iceberg movement being erratic sometimes, so I won't go any far into it.

I had a hard time being successful at keeping the little guys alive, I always seemed to push the icebergs too hard and they'd just go away, or too little and the would end up with the fishes. Some other times I just couldn't prevent one of the platforms from spinning, which was hilarious.

I was bad at the game but I had a lot of fun, so that must mean something :D

All in all, I enjoyed playing this game, it seems innovative to me, and the penguins definitely make it funny :D Although those fuckers are unable to stay still for a few seconds... Really cool groovy music too. Try appliying post-processing to this, it would look much better.

Music is still playing in my head.

rend 2018-08-25 13:27

I like your base idea and your interpretation of the theme. The game is light and funny, and the aesthetics suit it well. My main concern is the total lack of feedback on the player input. The physics also feel a bit random and the icebergs sometimes behave funny. It could be a great addition to have some feedback or highscore on the scoring mechanic because without any tracking and no timer at all, the game can feel a bit boring after a while. But those details aside, you did a fun little game, congrats.

rahim-pxr 2018-08-27 17:16

Nice game, Love how everything is balanced! Good luck, Don't forget to take a look at ours if you don't mind and see what it's like when we just focused on graphics in this game jam! Game Link: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/spacelab-42a

diptoman 2018-09-03 03:02

I laughed way too much to those dancing penguins and tumbling bears.

hellsquirrel 2018-09-04 13:55

Nice work!

gil4 2018-09-04 17:15

I enjoyed it! This game is both fun and funny, although I gotta say I expected it to be a bit easier, haha. The music was especially outstanding and fitting to the whole disco setting. I didn't have much of a problem with the controls or feedback, but I could see why others would want it; you'd surely add it in a full version of the game though (if you decide to continue working on the project), and it'd have been pretty hard to do with the limited jam time, so I wouldn't say that's something to criticize the game over. It's a polished and great entry overall, well done!

andrei9 2018-09-04 18:17

Coool! Nice :thumbsup: +++++
