LD42 — Running out of space

I Saw Him Today by MikomiKisomi 2018-08-19T08:04:38Z

I enjoyed the well thought-out story, rough artwork, and VN style, but I wish there was some music! It goes a long way in the genre. No real complaints here other than that!

Blow the Hen Down by NickZangus 2018-08-15T23:25:18Z

My favorite game so far in this jam, no issues here other than hating chickens now!

Reasonable Claustrophobia by SkullPixel 2018-08-16T01:27:09Z

Awesome mix between arcade shooter and puzzle elements! No complaints other than it feeling sorta bad when you miss a gunshot simply because you're too close to the enemy.

Alon Analytics by unpronounceable 2018-08-20T03:19:59Z

Even though you had a makeshift tutorial, a practical one would make a lot of sense in a game this complicated at first glance, especially when it's not fully clear what your goal is. I think if polished this could be a great, unique game!

A Hundred Dogs by gentoogames 2018-08-18T00:31:21Z

Chaotic gameplay with music backing it up - the sound effects were a bit loud, and it was possible to just exit the side of the map and despawn everything visually, but other than that it was a lot of fun!

What Is On The Walls Inside by fullmontis 2018-08-20T03:11:59Z

Great game! I love the choices you're given, although some more guiding hints would be nice so I didn't end up with the same ending multiple times. Everything other than that was beautiful. Amazing tone.

Floating Island by Echo Team 2018-08-19T16:22:09Z

The visuals are awesome, but other than that I tend to feel that there's something missing. The gameplay seems like an idle game, but you don't really add any feedback or progression that makes that worth it. Having no audio in addition to that makes it feel as if there's no purpose to playing the game - I really love the concept, visuals, and theme mashup though!

Cybatron by Flaterectomy 2018-08-19T20:16:22Z

The graphics are clean and polished, it's unique, the SFX and background music immerse you in the game and fit the mood, the level design is nice (if a bit difficult at times :P). The UI could use some slight improvements or at least a bit of a tutorial (the goal was confusing at times), and the perspective got a bit confusing at times so being able to rotate the map would be nice. With some expansion and tuning, this could be a full-on indie PC or mobile puzzler! Great stuff, one of my favorites so far.

Polar Panic! At the Disco by PeachTreeOath 2018-08-15T23:55:06Z

The title's awesome, and I loved how all the aspects added up and made a game with a cohesive style. A couple of issues I had were that when you try to make a wave on/under an iceberg, it'll only go up in the Y direction, and that my waves weren't visible. The score I got also felt out of my control most of the time - spinning seemed random, and sometimes I would lose all my animals just because I didn't get good enough spawns. I love the concept you came up with though, it's addictive and fun despite my complaints.

Aeromancer by Ethan Allwood 2018-08-14T06:13:00Z

The graphic and level design really carried this game for me! The music fit the tone perfectly (loved the latter, by the way). Took me about 15 minutes to get through. The depth of the game considering the time limit was great, not only with the amount of mechanics but also how you thought through all of them and implemented them into levels. I especially liked the bubble that you bounced off of. Good work!

TINY TOWNS by BearishMushroom 2018-08-19T19:54:16Z

One of the most addictive games I've played here! Great design sense, graphics, music, and SFX! I can see how it fit the theme, but it's not the most unique or best take on it in my opinion. Great UI as well. Honestly, other than my small nitpicks, it was awesome. Near the top of the games I've played so far in this Ludum Dare, and as a compo game that's really saying something. Edit: Beat the game and loved it!

EVOLUTION by Noa Calice 2018-08-20T02:31:21Z

oh no

Better Than Thanos by Vekstr 2018-08-19T08:19:04Z

I enjoyed the spammy gameplay and what you were going for, but I think starting at a certain brush size and being able to gain powerups would've been much better game design, since currently it's basically "choose your own difficulty" with the smallest being impossible and the biggest being way too easy. Lots of fun, though!

Dear Leader's Diet Plan by Historymaker118 2018-08-18T00:46:57Z

The tone of the game was great throughout. The art and music were nice, and your take on the theme was also fun, but the gameplay seemed a bit repetitive and tedious at times, with not much indicator or reward for your actions. I think with a bit more polish, this game could be awesome!

Crystalmancer by Crowno 2018-08-14T06:03:00Z

I loved the visual style and sound effects! The hammer was a bit weak and clunky for my taste, and the lack of invincibility frames made the game a bit too unforgiving in an anti-fun way, but other than that, incredible work. Can't wait to see how you update the game, and the work you've put in so far is obviously outstanding.

(After A) PARTY SIMULATOR 2018 by Autumnotopia 2018-08-15T23:47:00Z

The atmosphere in this game was awesome! You nailed the art style, the background sounds and sound effects once you beat the level were hilarious, and the level descriptions/prefaces cracked me up each time. I'd be giving you 5 stars if it were a bit longer and the original version had the same functions as the post-jam version, but I'll definitely keep an eye on the game if/when you decide to add more! Some minor issues I noticed were when I beat a level one time without having every item in, it being slightly confusing how large some items were (having a hitbox surround them/snapping to boxes would be nice), and the stuff you already ironed out. Great work!

Security Run by Virtual Turtle Studio 2018-08-18T00:24:51Z

The gameplay is very fun, the specifics of the game themselves could use some polish (there were a couple of bugs, very few sound effects that could've used work, and the same with the art). Even with those things not being incredible, the game itself was a lot of fun! For the time you were given, it's pretty damn good!

Ouch! by Zachary Shah 2018-08-16T15:44:08Z

Very enjoyable as a casual game! Don't really have any feedback past agreeing with the above on adding a high score and maybe expanding the different kinds of dots a bit! Good job for a 48 hour game!

Bunny Bazooka by MZA 2018-08-15T23:15:51Z

I had the same problem as above when I launched the first time - no enemies. One other nitpick is that you can jump when in the air (assuming this is a bug, that combined with no rate of fire limit leads to the levels being very cheese-able. I like what you went for in a game that just has no limits, but there are a lot of aspects (like the bunny health, etc) that are sort of unintuitive - a HUD could help with that. I like what I'm seeing here, enjoyed the art and direction you're taking it!

Overflow by antoined73 2018-08-20T02:22:27Z

I loved your usage of the theme, the simplistic graphics (although the water could've been made a bit prettier imo), and the audio. The turning and pickup hitboxes were a bit frustrating to play with, but other than that the gameplay was smooth as well. I think an arrow pointing to where you had to put people (or the people themselves) would've been useful - it's easy to get lost in some levels. Great job though!

Second-Claw Shop by Unpoe 2018-08-16T12:16:55Z

I enjoyed the weeb humor, music, art, and gameplay in general! I don't have many complaints - mainly the same as people above where I was unsure why I couldn't grab stuff from those who wanted stuff (maybe showing the pause screen in the intro would help). There were also a few bugs: sometimes I couldn't start a new game if I failed and I would see the "break your leg" text box for a bit before the game ended when I lost. Great job overall!

Purple Void by mochakingup 2018-08-16T15:53:39Z

I loved the aesthetic, and this game oozes of one with much more production quality than many other LD games, but I do have a few issues (partially because I did have such high expectations, and I still loved the game!). At times, the controls/combat felt a bit clunky in terms of combining fluid movement and attacks. Also, if you stand too close to the boss, you die instantly (I assume the hitboxes of their attacks in every direction hit you, since they wouldn't show up behind the boss). Maybe a small invincibility period after getting hit would help? Also, a jump would be nice. Other than those things, the scope, presentation, theme, and feel of this game were top notch. Even though I'm nitpicking, I still had a lot of fun!

Inner Space by Sengi 2018-08-16T00:01:10Z

The concept and execution of this were crazy (in a very good way). I'm surprised this doesn't have more ratings!

To Infinity and Beyond by Olivier Millochau 2018-08-20T03:37:35Z

Great concept and the execution in terms of rewarding gameplay was amazing! Very fun stuff - there were some bugs that got in the way of my first playthrough (on the web version), and a functional instead of written tutorial would be great, but for a game jam this is awesome!

Falling Ecosystem by sprvrn 2018-08-20T02:11:00Z

Great game! The SFX were neat, although some music would've been nice, and the gameplay itself was great (slightly confusing at first but not too hard to pick up). The art was great as well. I would've liked it if you could replace tiles or skip turns if you had nothing more you wanted to do, but overall awesome stuff!

The Best Internet Experience by Hugo kieffer 2018-08-19T16:30:13Z

The humor and way you approached the theme are great! The art fits the game perfectly as well. The audio could've been improved with some music and noises that fit the era of using Internet Explorer better! The game was fun as well, but I felt like there wasn't anything to work towards. There were some unique popups (like the one you would have to tick several boxes for), but there wasn't a sense of progression that made me want to keep working towards a high score, and I ended up just giving up. Adding something on the UI (like a Task Manager displaying RAM usage) would be a great way to let people know how they're doing in terms of whether they'll lose or not! Good job on your game!

Weltraum by JLV 2018-08-16T12:40:22Z

I'm glad someone made a VN! They're an underutilized genre imo, and while the story's obviously short due to time constraints, it's still pretty good if a bit trope-y at times and constrained in development due to the time given. My only other minor complaints are that the music could use some development and the animation/continuity of the moving road was a bit confusing? (You enter on the left and it looks like you're going to the right, but enemies are to the right of you and you end up on the left anyways. Am I missing something?). Onto the positives, the sound design was great, I loved the voice acting, I loved the tone set, and this was easily one of the most innovative entries I've played so far! It seems like you've responded pretty well to the feedback above so if you decide to make a post-jam build, that'd be fun to see!

Pipe Dream by JavaSaurus 2018-08-16T04:42:38Z

I love your concept and artistic execution! I think that the game is a bit lacking in terms of mechanics and how they were implemented (slippery controls although that's been mentioned a bunch, there's not really much of a difficulty or learning curve, and the next level hitbox at the top being too wide, leading to me teleporting to the next level by bashing into the ceilings), but I think that's more of a side effect of the time constraints than anything judging by your bug fixes! Incredible work on the art, music, and overall vision of the game! I'll definitely be looking out for updates. Expanding on what you have could make a real gem of a game.

Gardian by D1gital Cuts 2018-08-16T18:16:04Z

I get a black screen on the web version? Seems like I can control my character and I hear music/SFX, I just see nothing. As for the original version, I loved the graphics and the audio was charming, but it was very easy to get stuck - I appreciate the no tutorial approach, but certain things could have been laid out more intuitively. Great job on your first Ludum Dare!

Colony by thechubbypanda 2018-08-20T01:55:45Z

I love what you're going for! At times the artstyles clash (especially the spaceship animation), and the controls are very slippery as many people have said, which kind of clashes with the relaxing mood everything else sets. The lack of checkpoints also made it a bit frustrating. It's a cool concept and fun game when it's not being frustrating though :P

CubiCo by Dominic 2018-08-14T05:53:15Z

@deathray Yeah, we didn't properly manage our time and ended up having to implement audio, art, and the such at the very last minute. The audio balance and certain assets suffered as a result. Our options menu currently isn't working either, but it's in the works! We plan to make the game a fun experience all the way through (and at least fix the bugs in the Compo version).

CubiCo by Dominic 2018-08-16T15:21:04Z

@xyph The team appreciates it! It was definitely helpful having a 5-man core team (plus a bit of additional help). I appreciate the feedback on the music! I didn't really take into account how long the game would take, so I only created one track per section (this is especially obvious on the music that spans both Lobby and Lounge, especially because it's not the strongest of the tracks 😅).

While I did consider the fact that the tracks might loop, I looked more at the soundtrack as a whole than the track to track experience, not considering those who might stop playing before reaching those later sections or who just take a while finishing a level especially since it *is* a puzzle game :stuck_out_tongue:. Thanks for the feedback, and we hope you stick around for the post-jam version if you're interested!

CubiCo by Dominic 2018-08-19T18:41:54Z

@flaterectomy Thanks for the feedback! What you said is basically what we're looking at right now for the post-jam version - currently, we like our puzzle design but are working on the difficulty in order to hit a good middle ground. I'm also working on more songs in order to lower the amount of repetition, since I didn't take into account how long people might take playing each world (especially since the first two worlds share a track). We were also going to add animations and even had some of the assets but ran out of time to implement them! The jump landing sound is a web-only bug, the initial sound is supposed to be the only one. Glad you enjoyed!

The Sky is Falling by Fwuffy13 2018-08-18T00:36:00Z

Fit the theme well! It was interesting that the bullets you shot would curve around on the side. Also, you can shoot the ground to jump, and since there's no rate of fire, you can fly infinitely and gain points. I liked the shadows!

Zlinx by frontlinesaint 2018-08-14T20:37:10Z

Overall, I had a great time with this game! It was simple enough to be intuitive yet difficult in design, but not enough to be frustrating. I had a lot of fun playing it, and while I don't think it's the most innovative out of the submissions I've seen so far, it makes it up in charm. While you didn't do anything super out of the box with the theme, I do enjoy how you stuck to what's really important, making games fun. The music and simple graphics (I especially liked the blob) evoked that feeling as well. If anything, I would've made the music kick in a bit earlier or not loop when you die - those little additions you made later on were really nice and I was sad that the level would end as soon as the music started getting interesting. Controls were very smooth and responsive! Good work, I really enjoyed playing!

Edit: also saw that this was your first game - that's awesome! Good start!

Crumble by anstabo 2018-08-19T19:39:22Z

Fun, tricky game with some nice simple but effective songs to back it up and some really good graphics! Controlling the character was difficult but I enjoyed it. However, the jumping was a bit frustrating at times, especially on moving objects. I got the visual bug some people got above as well, and for nitpicking it's "42nd" not "42th" just so you know. Great work, I loved the post-2 minute part!

Dodghell by ChicoDeLosMates 2018-08-18T00:41:54Z

Love it! It's simple but fun, with the sound effects really cementing the mood you're going for. I also loved the game over screen, and the game's addictive enough to play over and over! Load time was a bit long on HTML5, the graphics were a bit simple, and the life bar was confusing, but those things are easy to overlook!
