This game was surprisingly fun. The controls were very well executed and it's very cool to see how much control and movement you can have only using 2 buttons. The difficulty is also very well balanced. Well done!
Hey guys, thank you all for the feedback. I really appreciate it =)
Just wanted to notify that I made a mistake and the download links were set to private instead of public (...not used to google drive). Took me a while to notice it, so I apologize for everyone who tried to download the desktop version and the source file before.
Now all the download files are public and everyone should be able to download them.
I liked the idea of a runner where you change directions by tapping the button, but the difficulty for me is too high and not in a very good way. What I got is that the symbols were supposed to tell you if the path is safe or dangerous, but in practice it's hard to see the environmental hazards before it's too late, like when you have to take a fall.
I'm still not sure if that was supposed to happen, but even when I followed blue symbols ended falling into pits. I also couldn't figure out what to do after the second door, since I always die almost instantly.
Another issue I had is that when you have to walk to the left, the path is even less visible because the screen doesn't adjust to show more of the direction you are facing (it's always positioned to show more of the right side).
Now for some positive comments: I really enjoyed the music, made me want to keep trying the game even when dying multiple times (the quick respawn also helps with that). The transitions for when you enter a door are also very cool to look at. Graphics are quite simple but they do the job.
Anyway, congrats for being able to finish it, with more polish I think it could turn out to be very interesting.
It's really nice to see how the themes were implemented and how well the idea works, specially the level of strategy that can be achieved only by walking left or right. Pretty solid game, good job!
The core idea is very simple but yet challenging. I like that you have the option to choose how many enemies to spawn by deciding when to collect the coins, even though sometimes you don't have a choice since multiple coins can spawn on top of each other. My biggest complaint would be the enemy spawns because they often spawn right on top of the player, dealing damage right away.
I like the humor and the mood, reminds me of cartoons I watched as a kid. The music also fits very well. Congrats on the game!
Really good vibes overall, there is always something super fun about raiding tombs and stealing cursed treasures (specially when you have a bad trip with cursed gold shrooms). Very charming graphics and nice music.
The skulls can get stuck into you very easily and some times it feels impossible to escape, which is probably my biggest complaint. But well, I guess that is the price to pay for being greedy right?
Congrats on the game, you guys did a great job!
I really like the game's concept, the visual department compliments that very well. It is fun to watch those damn filthy pirates trying to steal your treasure and run away.
Had a hard time trying to figure out the sword before realizing it needs to be touching an enemy when you click, so an animation for the sword swinging would be very welcome. Being able to reflect shots is very cool, though.
I also found a bit hard to shoot since your bullets are very small. The reload time makes you want to use the gun in very close proximity to not waste a shot, which makes the gun feel a bit unreliable.
Overall I really liked it, with some extra time I can see that potential being even more explored. Great job!
Probably the most original approach to the theme I've seen so far. The music is very soothing and the graphics reminds me a lot of oldschool RPG campaigns. The presentation is simple, yet very charming. Unfortunately I could not playtest it with someone else but I think it would be very fun to try it out.
Great work, congrats on the game!
Short but cool game, I really like the mood. The combat feels very good specially using a gamepad, and it is probably my favorite part even though I found out that rolling can be more effective than fighting in certain parts.
The idea of having to carry an object that hinders your movement is nice, but it made me wish for a bit more. Maybe something like being able to hold more than 1 battery at a once and having that affect your roll, etc. It is a cool idea that could definitely be expanded upon.
Congrats on the game!
@antti-haavikko Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback, I appreciate it!
One of the things I experimented with during this jam was to focus on core mechanics and level design before doing the art. I've learned that designing the assets and mechanics apart from each other can be very detrimental without enough time to properly fit them together. The biggest problem might be the hitboxes as you mentioned, that I completely overlooked after implementing the sprites. The player hitbox in particular ended up being slightly larger than the actual player sprite, giving the unfair disadvantage during the obsticle sections.
Aside from that, the lack of visual feedback on the double jumps is one of the things that bothers me the most. It was not my priority because I considered it to be mere visual flair, but as you can see that visual feedback would be much needed to get a good grasp at that mechanic.
I'm still working on the game and planning to upload a better version once this Ludum Dare ends. Some things like the terrible platform staircases have been replaced already, and your feedback will certainly help me to keep improving it. Again, thanks a lot for taking your time.
Ah, the secret collectibles are in there just for the joy of having secrets. You don't get anything for finding all of them (yet!).
I dig the idea of having a limited amount of time that ticks down faster as you collect more treasure. Trying to collect as many coins as possible and escape before the time runs out is fun, I just wish there was some incentive to go after them.
I also think the game could benefit from not having limited lives, since it is very easy rush into a hole and there's no checkpoints from what I could see. Maybe instead of lives the hearts could grant you extra hits, or the collected coins could count towards getting more lives somehow.
Graphics and sound were quite nice, and I think overall the game came up very well put together. Great job!
The Atari thematic goes pretty well with the arcade nature of the idea, trying to collect treasure as it gets gradually harder is always fun. My only suggestion for improvement would be trying to embrace more the Atari aesthetic, going for a more authenthic resolution and maybe even throwing some scanlines in there. Congrats on the game!
@antti-haavikko I must confess that I've felt my approach to the theme could be a bit loose, so I can understand why some people may not get it right away. The fact that many people made the connection and thought it was creative makes me really glad though!
Also, I want to say that I am blown away by the reception my submission got so far. Reading all of your comments and feedback makes me super happy, specially knowing that many of you enjoyed the game despite of its roughness. Taking all of that in consideration, I've uploaded a new stand-alone version on Itch with some fixes and changes (while keeping the original version intact for the sake of ratings).
Thank you for everyone who took their time to play, rate and comment. I appreciate ya! <3
