Fun and challenging. Easy to pick up and play. The graphics and audio come together for satisfying game-play.

I can't come up with the incompatible genres though. It seems like a normal, and fun, typing game.

Nice work :)

albuquerque 2018-04-23 06:38

Amazing game! Really polished and engaging.

My main problem was only the theme of the jam. I did not get the "2 Incompatible Genres" out of the "typing" and "restaurant" games.

yanek 2018-04-23 08:51

That's a really good fun game, loved almost everything about it. And as a non-native English speaker, I can even find it some kind of educational theme. I will definitively come back to this game from time to time.

blubberquark 2018-04-23 12:01

Great mood!

rhythmlynx 2018-04-23 12:50

Ah this is a really great combination

javicepa 2018-04-23 13:43

Very fun! I beat it on the third attempt. Nicely balanced and with a very nice vibe. Congrats!

P.S: I Hate you for mapping the backspace to the left key ¬¬

ludipe 2018-04-23 13:51

@javicepa I hate myself for mapping backspace to the left key as well (don't know if that helps :-P)

On some browsers pressing backspace takes you to the previous page, I couldn't figure out a way to block that so I had to remap that.

javicepa 2018-04-23 14:25

@ludipe I though it was because of something like that... I believe that if you focus the game "window" (the game canvas) before pressing backspace it doesn't happen. Maybe there is a way to do this programmatically in a web js script?

jonathan-whiting 2018-04-23 16:27

Very enjoyable concept that shines through despite a few implementation details bugging me (no backspace, not very comprehensive word list, having to press right rather than just typing).

oldetobeh 2018-04-23 16:47

Great Game!

bombjack 2018-04-23 18:18

very nice game. I totally liked it

blinkenlights 2018-04-23 18:24

Love the style, the atmosphere, the challenge, and WORDS! BEAUTIFUL WORDS!

dragonxvi 2018-04-23 18:55

Tasty words, would dine here again

aaronacus 2018-04-23 20:28

La mecánica me parece super chula y original. El sonido y la estética dan un mood muy bueno!

Muy buen juego!:D

lyxil 2018-04-23 23:36

I like the idea a lot! Although I was hoping for something tasty when I heard "cooking / restaurant"... :)

It's very innovative! I do wish each level (make this word, etc) could be more challenging. Worked with no problems on Mac, but I do suggest letting the user type Backspace to delete a character since it's such an instinctual response.

I love the art too! Simple and clear.

morphine 2018-04-24 00:22

Really liked this, my only complaint it that I want to keep my hands on the keys and use Enter to move to the next word, not take hands off to press the arrow key.

chris-hall 2018-04-24 02:03

Good work! Fun to sit down and bloop around with, relaxing and fun. The sound the customers make when they talk is really funny.

toboggan 2018-04-24 02:33

this is excellent! definitely wish you could use enter and backspace. also to be able to see/access the rules while you're typing would be nice. really nice job tho, the art is nice.

loads super slow for me for some reason? on windows.

2018-04-24 02:40

innovative and addictive. it'd make a good app! quick and fun! thanks!

benpeterson 2018-04-24 02:43

This is amazing! The control scheme of having the left and right arrows turned the keyboard experience into a typewriter experience; so damn cool

one bug is that if you miss and hit a numpad key itll type out "numpad 0" instead of "0" and you have to backspace it all

ninjapenguindan 2018-04-24 04:52

I realize that backspace is iffy on certain browsers, but I kept reaching for that instead of the left arrow key. Aside from that, I really enjoyed the work you put into this. The dictionary might could be extended, but aside from that and the backspace issue, I honestly don't have many complaints.

judy-kim 2018-04-24 05:27

Really simple, but really fun and well executed and looks so pretty! Everything works together so well and I love that the game is pretty endlessly fun as long as I keep pushing myself to search for better words. It was a little frustrating that it somewhat frequently rejected words that definitely are words but I guess weren't in the dictionary you used (especially because I had to use the left arrow key to get rid of the word afterwards agh haha) but that's not a big deal really. Overall I think it's pretty brilliant and I love the visuals and audio so much :)

jcwelgemoed 2018-04-24 06:31

Fun little game. well done. I get the theme, but I think that could have perhaps been brought forward a bit more? Ended up feeling like normal typing game. Liked the concept of certain letters that need to be, or not, in the word. Makes you think beyond the obvious words sometimes. Using the left-arrow to delete got me a few times as I presses backspace out of habit. Overall a nice entry.

ludipe 2018-04-24 07:56

@Lyxil Using backspace can be quiet a pain in web-games. Many browsers will take you to the previous page and close the game, that's why I had to map it to a different key (I know it's not the best solution though).

@toboggan Yeah, being able to check out the rules during gameplay was something I had to cut because of the limited time I had to work. Regarding it loading slow, were you using the web-version? What browser was that? How's your internet connection?

@BenPeterson Whoops! Thanks for reporting that. My laptop doesn't have a numpad and I forgot to block those keys.

@NinjaPenguinDan Yeah, the dictionary isn't the best, I have to do some research in that regard.

@Judy Kim Thank you! Yeah, I should improve the dictionary.

angela-he 2018-04-24 09:08

Great idea! Is it a combo of a typing game and restaurant/job games? I love how it has so much personality (e.g. a unique UI and deep, grim writing - gah, flashbacks to some not so great jobs.. D:) - I think that in itself, a restaurant/job game with a grim personality, combines 2 incompatible genres because I've never seen one of those games without bubbly colorful graphics and a shallow backstory. As others have said, pressing the left arrow was unintuitive at first. I also think it'd be more intuitive to 'submit' words with enter. It's understandable that you couldn't get it working, though, since you were fighting against the browser. Amazing job for only 9 hours.

samuelsousa 2018-04-24 09:09

Using left to delete was confusingly hard but I get it :)

ooku 2018-04-24 12:19

perfect :D

gamepopper 2018-04-24 12:55

Brilliant idea for a game! It's a shame you can only suggest one word answers, but as is this game is very clever and requires a lot of thought.

hauo 2018-04-24 13:42

Was great fun! Writing is not my strong point, the game naturally makes you want to try and figure out a good word. Love the style & sounds as well, sets a very nice tone.

hiwarp 2018-04-24 16:06

Neat game idea. At first i played fast to take a overall impression.. Wooh! I completely missed the firsts notes.. So quickly end game! :D Once i feel the experience of typing 'clicky' keys, and the final graphic art.. fell in love! I restart the game to read well. That's is the kind of game i love. Remember me to 'Papers Please' in the game loop, and probably this jam-game is as good as it.

sebastianscaini 2018-04-24 16:31

This was really cool!

ironygames 2018-04-24 17:15

With some storyline or some objectives, the task of a copywriter would be a very entertaining one!

One criticism: I kept going for the backspace instead of the left arrow to erase, and likewise with the enter key. I guess I expected all the functionalities of a typewriter!

prodigalson 2018-04-24 18:56

Made me laugh when the customer asked for "G" and I have him "garbage" and they said "It looks tasty" when when they asked for "S" and I gave them "Steak" they yelled "What is this garbage!" nice idea and well implemented. I don't mind at all using the arrows for backspace. Didn't catch that time was passing by so when I went to submit an order the transition to end of day was happening and I hit next by mistake thinking I was still submitting a word so I missed my results but no biggie. Still fun to play. Excellent work!

troll-tamer-games 2018-04-24 19:55

Really awesome interpretation of the theme that plays super well! Having to switch between the main keyboard area and the arrow keys whilst on a timer was a bit awkward but the game is seriously cool. Would be a great game to teach typing!

oldpeculier 2018-04-24 20:06

Jolly good fun, and a nice mental workout.

nathalia-hohl 2018-04-24 21:00

Really liked your game. The graphics are simple but effective, I wouldn't ask for much more besides a bit better formatting, and the art goes well with the sounds. As a non native speaker I felt like I was iliterate at first but at the third run I was already feeling confident and remembering my vocabulary and got to beat it.

Sometimes I'm not sure why the customers didn't like my word. Probably I just forgot the order, because they were not particularly short.

There are the aforementioned issues with hotkeys, return as an option to the right arrow would be appreciated and maybe you could have let us have the backspace in the standalone versions.

I instantly thougt about Violet Evergarden when I read the description of the game. Was it a source of inspiration?

ludipe 2018-04-24 23:21

@Angela He Thanks for your lovely comment! Yeah, I should have added "enter" as another way to send the word.

@gamepopper I didn't even think of multiple word solutions. Would be a little bit trickier to implement but it could add a lot. Thanks! :-)

@HiWarp Making the initial instructions available during the core loop was a planned feature that I ended cutting off because I run out of time. Will try your game soon ;-)

@ProdigalSon That's a really cool story. Also I just realized that I should have added an input delay to the score screen. Thanks!

@Nathalia Hohl That's a great comment, thanks! Yeah, I should have added "enter" as an alternative way to submit a word. Violet Evergarden wasn't a source of inspiration, at least I wasn't aware of it. I started watching the show a couple of weeks ago, so maybe it got stuck somewhere in my mind and came out during the jam. Funny how our brains work :-)

oivin-f 2018-04-25 00:07

Controls are simple, gameplay is easy to grasp yet challenging. While it doesn't have huge amounts of depth, I'm still kindof jealous someone came up with this brilliant, simple and elegant idea. Very well done!

lonewookie 2018-04-25 02:23

I really enjoyed this! I think the "cooking game" part might be a bit of a stretch but it fit thematically! It would be cool to have to adhere to themed words to! Like verbs only, or animals. That would be fun! Well done!

loois-messina 2018-04-25 05:52

Great concept, and great execution. Reminded me a lot of Papers, Please! which was awesome. It worked as a fun party game where everyone was yelling out words to type and we could laugh at the suggestions. Thanks for the fun time ;)

miqui-gaud 2018-04-25 10:19

High praise to you Ludipe! This game is so simple and yet so fun! I'm kinda disappointed i'm from Madrid and I haven't meet you yet haha, but it will eventually come! Good luck with the ratings

neon 2018-04-25 12:39

Simple and fun game. Very hard though, as a non-native english speaker. I know the language relatively well, but random foods certainly don't pop up in my head

le-slo 2018-04-25 20:58

Fun, Hard, Funny, Curious, Spectacular. Delicious game.

sheila-ayala-heady 2018-04-25 23:41

This is fun! Could easily become a full "learn to type" game

ramza 2018-04-26 00:31

I had a great time playing your game. It's simple, but a lot of fun.

kristian-david 2018-04-26 02:09

This is a great concept. This is the only LD 41 game so far that I spent more than 10 minutes playing.

maikelortega 2018-04-26 07:23

Great game, actually replayed it a few times! The dictionary was pretty frustrating at times, but the concept of being liking or being alergic to certaing letters was really interesting. I see myself playing this as quick training before writing!

elhombrebanana 2018-04-26 08:19

Great game! Quite interesting concept and very well executed!

p-r 2018-04-26 09:27

Cool, I just ordered for this game a 4-letter word that starts with 'L',ends with 'E', and has a 'V' and an 'O' in the middle.

spaceface14dev 2018-04-26 10:48

Cool!

ludipe 2018-04-26 15:38

@lonewookie Yeah, having themed words would be fantastic (that would also mean I'd need to work a lot on the dictionary hahaha).

@Miqui Gaud Ty! :-) I attend most events in Madrid, so it's easy to find me hahaha. (during this ludum dare I was around the venue ESNE prepared for the jam).

@p-r Awww, thanks a lot!

saintheiser 2018-04-26 16:58

Man, I'm impressed! Love this game a lot. SOlid game mechanic and goals make argasm for every game-designer =) It's very fun to think about word with different reqirements. Alsy very funny texts. Wall made awesome game, thank you for your job!

r4ndomthunder 2018-04-26 17:25

Amazing game! Really polished and engaging. Graphics and sounds are great! I'm not a native English speaker and i can't know some word. Good job!

If you want you can try my game on this link: [Scarry](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/scarry)

local-minimum 2018-04-26 17:49

Interesting game, and sometimes really challenging when you couldn't come up with words or the ones you did come up with were not known. I didn't mind the leftkey/backspace. But I wasn't focusing too much on trying to be very fast. It would have been fun if customers returned and remembered what the got the previous time and had ideas what they wanted next based on it.

hpmnk 2018-04-26 22:00

Really interesting game, never saw something like that. Would definitely need a tutorial to learn the Left/right arrow system, but once you get past there, it's really a good experience. The amount of word is really impressive ( a bit surprised the word Ludum didn't worked : p )

Would love a game where you let people accept your words or not. After each day, you would have to vote for 5 random words said by other people

A great piece as a portfolio, really charming. You got my 4/5

ghost20000 2018-04-27 08:42

I loved the atmosphere of the game. Really simple and fun!

2018-04-27 15:06

Really fun, well made game! I included it in my Ludum Dare 41 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cwbDpVj28g

mariosmaniatis 2018-04-27 18:50

Really really nice! Loved it, but i didn't manage to get the 1500$ :(

quijipixel 2018-04-27 22:35

Great game! love the allergic detail on the orders! The game has a lot of potential and a little music would surely add up!

recursor 2018-04-28 00:56

This is the most fun game I've played so far. The actual gameplay is great fun and the sounds are pleasing too. Excellent job.

chormacorple27 2018-04-28 00:58

This game was amazing. I played it three times, and plan on playing it more. I haven't beaten it... yet! Great job on such a great game.

coatline 2018-04-28 00:58

Love it!!! I played almost 4 times but never got the 1,500$! The audio was hilarious. It went "dodododo!" after a order was finished

hypersnow 2018-04-28 03:13

Great job, simple yet effective graphics and sounds. Not exactly sure how it fit the theme, but the gameplay was fun nonetheless.

stark 2018-04-28 08:40

Great game, fun, unique and interesting!

keln 2018-04-28 15:06

Very nice and creative game, It made me realize I'm bad at english vocabulary hahahaha

travischen 2018-05-01 05:34

Simple fun game. Very relaxing to play. Would love to play this on my phone!

arzi 2018-05-01 10:00

I love all sorts of word games so this one was definitely for me. The biggest problem is the one with all games that have to rely on a dictionary: sometimes it just doesn't recognise the word.

mercurybd 2018-05-02 16:58

Really nice entry. Interesting concept. Keep up the good work.

cristiano-m-garcia 2018-05-06 21:06

Good job! Cool game!

I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.

I hope you continue with the project.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/witchs-escape

rodrysson 2018-05-08 22:47

Such an interesting game! I was playing for half an hour but I couldn't reach the goal hahahhaah... haha... my restaurant will be declared bankrupt T^T Anyway, I think the idea is pretty curious and it fits the theme, I like it. Besides, the sounds are in accordance with the keys of the typing machine. The only feature I would improve is the controls you use to type: I think it is weird to press the arrow keys to delete or to advance (I would use the Enter and the backspace). Finally, it would be a better experience for the player if it showed the letters they are typing at the moment, but I'm not sure if it would be an improvement.

ethan-kennerly 2018-05-13 19:28

When I typed a word that matched two letters and avoided one, I felt clever! If you continue to develop this, when I habitually pressed the backspace key, delete key, and enter key and nothing happened, I felt interrupted.
