So... VR as in with VR headset, I guess. Just fired it up on my poor, headsetless rig and was stuck half-way in the ground with no control. After decades of games trumpeting "VR experiences" I guess I forgot there was finally a consumer model, lol. Gotta love the 21st century!

Congrats on putting out something so cutting edge for LD Compo! Its been quite a while since I haven't met minimum system specs

Fantastic job matey! First VR LDJam game I've played, gave me chance to play with my HTC Vive. Was an interesting concept and I was excited to explore the space ship.

Unsure if this was intended but I went into the medicine cabinet and threw a pill bottle, it kinda floated beautifully with the pills inside coming out slowly. Felt like there was no gravity and was a nice effect.

Teleportation was a little janky, perhaps because I played sat down, but took my a bit of hand waving for the teleport icon to appear on the floor.

I enjoyed the read out of the engine screen when pushing random buttons :D Made me laugh.

More please! Thanks for creating and sharing.

@ryte2byte Yeah, VR is still a bit bleeding edge, I suppose

@binaryferret Thanks for the feedback! Glad the little touches (the pills & engine screen) were worth the time.

You should probably upload a walkthrough video so people without VR can still vote, I like the idea of making VR games for a jam. Good job :D

rjhelms 2017-05-15 03:16

I agree with @filogc - would love to see a walkthrough vid of this, as it looks really interesting but, as a VR-less pleb I can't try it out.

@filogc @rjhelms Ask, and you shall receive.

I just watched the walkthrough because not having any VR system, and it's a good idea providing it ! I just enjoy the guts of making a VR game for a Ludum Dare, and a seemly functionnal game !

I would just argue that the controller being visible should be replaced with a "hand" model or lookalike, but i don't really know at how much point it's possible or not, so it's not that important.

Great job !

neon 2017-05-16 00:55

@bomb-x I would agree with replacing the hand, but it's just a time-budget thing combined with my lack of modeling skill. Would've definitely made a hand model if I had more time though. Thanks for the feedback!

@neon Thanks for the walkthrough! Glad I came back to check it out. This looks pretty impressive for 48 hours! Lots of goofy things to try out, even the walkthrough did a good job of capturing the ennui of being alone in the middle of space.

hey really cool game! i dont have a VR headset, so i appreciated your video walkthrough. the atmosphere you created was superb. you really felt alone. the sound design was also fantastic. the contrast of the sharp sounds with the general silence of space added to the mood very well. i really enjoyed the part with the mentos looking pills floating out of the bottle. i also thought it was a nice touch adding 'days to the end' and 'expected cause of death' to the console. it made it a bit eerie, i liked it. it was also cool the way the bottle filled up with food and emptied when you consumed them. the bouncy balls were funny. the engine room was clever too with the text for each button press. overall i think the atmosphere you created and the attention to interesting little details were the strongest aspects of the game. its also quite impressive that you were able to do all of this for the compo! bravo friend.

i dont like how the forward movement is so choppy. when you walk forward it shows only a few discrete frames of movement. i dont have any experience with VR, so i dont know if this is a very difficult thing deal with, but it did take away from the experience in my opinion.

the concept was wonderful as was the execution, really nice work! i only wish i had a VR headset so i could explore it myself.

neon 2017-05-16 23:55

@xxdoombox Thank you! The movement is choppy because I mostly moved using the teleportation feature (a necessity, since I only really have ~2x2 meters of space), which is the only type of movement in the game (well, in addition to like, actually moving IRL). It's one of the easy two types of locomotion in VR, the other one being "sliding around" which is what you see in 2D fps games, but that tends to cause a lot of nausea. In the interest of not making people sick, I went with the teleportation, but I do agree that it does kind of take away from the experience. It's still early days for VR though, one day someone will come up with something way better. And thanks again for the long comment, I really appreciate it.

Some nice humorous touches in there! The zero gravity environment looks like a lot of fun to play around in.

juju-adams 2017-05-19 20:00

Couldn't play it, since I don't own a VR set, but seems a funny game to play. Seems very immersive and the mentos part got some giggles out of me! The concept was really good too, though the graphics could use some work ♥

occultone 2017-05-20 06:28

I think I would have loved more to do, but the memos were pretty funny. I was really interested in trying some of the VR Games this jam but I only just got it working on my machine. Good job on not making folks nauseous! Great job on the atmosphere, 3D is no joke in a jam.

tddawson 2017-05-20 16:28

Since I couldn't play it, I had to opt out of a few categories. However, just watching the walkthrough video left me very impressed with what you were able to accomplish in such a short time! I have a GearVR--not sure if the controls and other requirements are such that it could be converted into more of a point-and-click adventure compatible with GearVR and similar headsets.

It looked great and seemed to have quite a good feel to the whole game. Great work!

neon 2017-05-21 12:08

@randomhuman @juju-adams @occultone @tddawson Thanks a lot for the feedback and ratings! Almost didn't get enough to get the final score, whew.
