LD42 — Running out of space

Crazy Slime Escape by Nats 2018-08-14T08:50:04Z

i like the idea behind this game and would definitely revisit it if some mechanics were tightened up.

it's really hard to control the character with an xbox controller for example. simply walking in a straight line is difficult, and he moves probably half as fast as i'd like him to. though i'll admit I appreciate a slower speed at times when you're trying to figure out how to beat a slime spreading throughout the room.

The idea of some guns having limited ammo is also quite nice for puzzle opportunities, but it's pretty hard to aim without a reticle or something. spoiling a shot sometimes means having to restart, so any accuracy indicator would be appreciated

Insufficient Storage by petitpois 2018-08-16T07:09:54Z

the graphics are more or less fine to me, but yeah the hud really gets in the way. also there's a lot of stuff that looks like they should be pickups, but aren't, or it's not clear what they do.

the game plays pretty smooth though. would have liked to have seen the different enemy types do different stuff. maybe tweets keep splitting in two as they go viral idk :)

Eating Sim by robochase6000 2018-08-14T08:45:42Z

@benjamin-l @guardhei i'm still not very good at the game myself, but it helps to shut your mouth and wait for good stuff to come out. you don't want to eat the grubs for example, and it's a good idea to save meat for the end of a chain, otherwise the gas makes it pretty tough to get anything else in for a while.

also in versus mode, you can totally end up spitting grubs into the opponents mouth to mess with them :D

Thanks for playing!

Eating Sim by robochase6000 2018-08-14T17:47:16Z

@trocentraisin yeah, it used to be really easy to get hard candy completely stuck in your throat, rendering your run a waste. I added a small hitbox in your throat that shrinks the food just like the stomach acid. it does it a little bit slower to allow for some dramatic tension (am I choking??? lol), and it doesn't add to your stomach nutrients. But it should be enough to free up a blockage if you give it 10 seconds or so

Eating Sim by robochase6000 2018-08-16T19:48:23Z

@sobakaduka yeah it could be better explained perhaps. your score is calories X protein. the points collect in your stomach (think of it as the acid becoming nutrient rich), and then you 'lock in' those points when you drain your stomach (they basically transfer from your stomach to your final score). Oh, and the bugs will consume the nutrients in the acid - they basically consume calories and protein, so either get rid of them or cash in your points before they take too many.

Thanks for playing!

@historymaker118 sorry it wasn't for you, but thanks for the feedback!

I agree a proper tutorial system would be nice in a more polished release. I was primarily focused on layering all the mechanics I wanted. In a more complete game, I would probably introduce the food types one by one (I've already implemented a few new types and have more planned), and also have more refined UI & tips for when the player should increase their stomach acid or digest their calories.

food dissolves in your throat as well, but it's a slow process. Burping/Puking sometimes helps to dislodge things faster. I thought it would add a little tension (ugh I'm choking!) but I think most people just get frustrated after 8 seconds and see it as a bug :)

Flat Builder by Drauthius 2018-08-19T18:44:32Z

adding a spending limit was a pretty good idea for this type of game. it's a pretty decent idea for a more fleshed out game too. if you keep going with this idea, I think I'd like to see rooms of different weights, and possibly adjacency requirements that force more interesting layouts (like the boiler room must be next to a power generator room or something.

Nice work :)

Parking Lot Simulator by lucbarr 2018-08-15T04:43:16Z

i like the lettering system on the cars. once you realize what is going on, you end up creating your own system for organization.

LaserJuice (Top Down Shooter) by NoTime4Name 2018-08-14T08:59:23Z

great name, and i love that effect on that ever growing permafrost/overgrowth/whatever. it looks really nice :)

Can you only point & shoot? I didn't see controls listed anywhere so i just sorta mashed around.

I'd like to try this again with a lazer gun that say only shoots a half of a screen length, so you really have to push back at it.

I'm B'walkin' Here! by Ziamor 2018-08-19T18:54:44Z

this is a good start. the graphics are nice and the music makes it all feel super cute. it's very short though. I would have liked to have played some levels with 10x the pedestrians and being able to use my ability more frequently. also more pedestrian types please :)

Dataphobia by Shozou 2018-08-19T19:39:31Z

pretty interesting idea. picking the wrong load out is a little annoying. would have liked to have like a core loadout, and then you add additional abilities to get to alternate exits perhaps. I loved all the notes throughout :)

R.O.O.M. (Really Obvious Objects Moving) by NorthernDevGuy 2018-08-16T03:47:00Z

i like that you have to run through a level first to get to the switch, then race fast through that area again. it's pretty smart design.

the platforming needs some love. i think for me the biggest thing was that floating objects & the player needed distinct shadows on the ground so it's easier to figure out depth/jumps.

i also got kind of a weird horror movie vibe from this which is pretty cool

Due Process by scottyseus 2018-08-16T03:28:14Z

nice idea. i could really use a cheat sheet during the game tho

Park & Match by Carlos Giraldo 2018-08-15T03:57:14Z

i like the concept a lot! Having to manage a whole parking lot is a neat idea :)

I found the driving to be a bit frustrating though. I'd bump up acceleration & deceleration a ton because having to do multi-point turns is kind of agonizing. With driving mistakes feeling very punishing, it feels less about dealing with space issues and more about perfect driving.

7:30 am by matzetoni 2018-08-14T09:43:01Z

pretty depressing game

you nailed the presentation and made me lol. great job :)

Trade Man: Out of Space by darkmonkey inc 2018-08-15T04:29:14Z

i got fired for trading a pile of junk and coming back with a horse lol

LD48 — Deeper and deeper

mindgrid by robochase6000 2021-04-27T18:21:47Z

yeah for sure! thanks for checking it out :)

mindgrid by robochase6000 2021-04-27T18:55:23Z

thanks @cninja I'd like to keep working on it I think.

the plan with this is to add a Safe in each level that you can plant an idea into (like inception). this would basically just change the robot's behavior to like ignore you, guard you, enrage, etc. it's a really strange idea and tbh Idk if it would actually 'come together' very well lol, but It's worth a shot I think. I'm just happy I got to work on some new stuff/mechanics :)

mindgrid by robochase6000 2021-04-27T20:29:57Z

huh interesting @beardmage ...thanks for checking it out at least. what kind of computer do you have if you don't mind me asking? there's a few cameras, and some threading involved, but nothing super crazy

mindgrid by robochase6000 2021-04-28T01:57:16Z

@beardmage i uploaded a new build to itch.io that adjusts the pathfinding threading, if you want to try it again to see if it makes a difference. thanks either way!

mindgrid by robochase6000 2021-04-28T13:36:27Z

darn. thanks for checking!

mindgrid by robochase6000 2021-04-28T19:37:58Z

@amar-ravi there isn't any interaction between the timelines right now. it will probably be something like 'if you die in one timeline, you die in all of them', and probably also a shared inventory

thanks for the tip about pressing enter btw - I forgot that it's paused by default when you switch. maybe that's what you're stuck on @beardmage ... I meant to add some UI here, but hadn't gotten to it yet

Red Stranding by Alchemic 2021-04-27T19:52:03Z

pretty ambitious to build this in a weekend :) days are very short IMO...as a new player, I think I would have preferred longer days, you barely figure out what's going on and then it's pitch black night time already :D

into the cabal by profan 2021-04-27T18:20:10Z

I got stuck in the maze too. maybe leave the clue in the entrance room to be re-read. lovely presentation though!

Sea Game by MattWoelk 2021-04-29T01:24:30Z

very cool graphics! did you roll your own shader for this?

Get to the choppa! by cvetk0 2021-04-27T20:00:13Z

yeah I'm not seeing the pads? they could be way more obvious (maybe a blinking arrow or something lol)

Rock Shark Diamonds by Amar Ravi 2021-04-27T18:35:38Z

I beat it - nice simple concept and well executed. the water bubbles and rocks can make for some pretty interesting mechanics/route planning. nice work!

Drill goes brrrr! by BOOtak 2021-04-27T20:26:04Z

charming, is there sound? sometimes occasionally there's some sfx, but for the most part it's silent. maybe reduce the fuel cost a bit, a lot of trips are spent just selling enough minerals to refuel. I like it!

Jotun by cninja_ 2021-04-27T18:10:51Z

looks like a solid setup for a more fleshed out game, I like what's there. maybe the mining animation could be faster. also it's kind of sad that this guy just digs forever with no chance of getting out of the hole he's dug himself.

MechaRock by Robonaut121 2021-04-29T01:48:35Z

I like what's going on here, but wow I found this one to be tough to play on a keyboard!

The missiles spawn like 2x too fast and drop 3-4x faster than I'd like - it makes it feel really random. I could see this being pretty interesting if you slow it down and play up the missile juggling aspect - it's kind of a neat way to defend a tower you're working on.

Also maybe some kind of princess peach hover effect for your character's jump could be really fun here i think.

I like this kind of game, not trying to criticize here, i just think you could probably turn this into something pretty addicting with some small adjustments :) nice work!

Forage by Cryptomnesic 2021-04-27T18:01:23Z

nice graphics, fun concept, but the movement is quite stiff

Minelight by Joris Valette 2021-04-27T17:33:42Z

kind of confusing at first, maybe the sides should be mapped to a cube or something. i like the idea though!

The World's Greatest Fisherman by justinj 2021-04-27T18:45:32Z

very nice, the electricity puzzles are pretty cool. the last one took me a minute to figure out. great ending too lol
