Great game, love the art style, check this game out, it deserves your attention!

andreadbx 2018-08-13 13:27

Overall nice game, it has a very nicely done retro/atari feel and the gameplay and movements are very smooth though i got some crashes: ___________________________________________ ############################################################################################ FATAL ERROR in action number 1 of Step Event0 for object objPlayer:

Nice game you have there, pretty solid, had fun with it. Congrats!

megalink 2018-08-13 21:07

Thanks everyone!

rvenson 2018-08-14 00:15

I liked the art style of the game. The weapons and the surviving system made the game a lot of fun. Probably any goals would make the game even more addictive.

stephen-coley 2018-08-14 02:15

I never ended up surviving very long, but fighting snakes was fun, especially with a bow. :)

aaron-horrar 2018-08-14 02:27

Great fun! The graphics/sound really melded together. Flooding mechanic was a cool take on the theme

matank 2018-08-14 02:53

Had a really good time playing it! Especially liked the bow mechanic (shooting stuff with the bow felt great). The most I managed to survive was a little over 4 minutes.

jtrink 2018-08-14 05:31

Plays very smoothly and the core gameplay loop is quite satisfying. Love the amount of impact you feel for the attacks as the player character - wish the ground-based enemies also had attack animations with a lot of oomph behind them.

pyjamaboy 2018-08-14 07:34

Really fun and well designed game! The art was really nice and the flooding mechanic worked really well!

nnnikki 2018-08-14 08:17

Simply neat!

ratys 2018-08-14 09:06

Very stylish and entertaining! Minor gripe, however: it feels like there's a bit too much screen shake.

mateusboga 2018-08-14 09:35

Runs very smoothly and is pretty satisfying to play :)

megalink 2018-08-14 09:48

@ratys Yeah, I may have made it a bit too high haha. Glad you enjoyed it! :)

lilkkgoog 2018-08-14 13:56

A very fun game, the graphics are nice and the gameplay works pretty well. It's just I think the flood should come up and stay there. Though that's just my opinion, other than that great game.

mashas 2018-08-14 18:49

I felt that this could very well have been made by me and my friend! Similar art, sound and gameplay. I'll leave it up to you to decide if that is praise or not. ;) Personally I liked it!

The flood just appearing caught me off guard the first time. I was expecting a similar effect as the shrinking bubble in PUBG or Fortnite BR. The next game I had some trouble figuring out what was supposed to be an elevated position but I learned that the hard way as well. :D

After that I just hung around the elevated place with my trusty bow. Excellent sound and feel to it btw! Smol sneks stood no chance. Then during the flood some invisible thing started eating at me until I died. Not sure what that was all about. Personal best at around 4 minutes.

Good job!

megalink 2018-08-14 22:12

Thanks for the feedback @mashas ! Next time I'll try to be more clear and descriptive when making the games instructions, so that players are more certain of what they should be doing. :)

awix 2018-08-15 07:13

A good game idea, the music should be improved. The graphics are good. Try our game too, maybe you'll like it)

poffle 2018-08-15 15:42

The screenshot instantly made me feel like an 8 year playing Coleco-vision all over again so I had to play it! Even better than expected! The art is nicely animated, especially the snakes. I kinda wish you went full on atari and had really basic backgrounds. It was fun to play, 3 snakes at once put up a challenge! I got greedy and thought I could get to another high bit and died in the end. Great little retro title. You could build upon this nicely.

boltkey 2018-08-15 19:38

I like it! It felt quite thematic. I would love if there were more flood levels and the water would rise gradually.

I found an exploitable bug - if you keep alternating between two screens, your food and health will stay at max but the time will keep counting. If you get up on the big elevated piece that spans over two screens, you can use this for infinite time.

The arrow and bow/rocks didn't feel too powerful, perhaps I just suck at using them. It felt wrong that I could not shoot from the high ground to the low ground.

Chaotic movement of the foxes was a bit annoying :D.

flower 2018-08-15 20:11

Nice game)

megalink 2018-08-15 22:25

Thanks for the feedback everyone! :) @boltkey the original concept was actually to have more then one flood level, but we decided to stick to just one as we thought it would result in too much waiting, and therefore destroy the flow of the game. Also, good catch with the exploit! I'll create a post-jam version which fixes some of these bugs. @poffle I'm really glad it made you feel that way, I'm super proud of how the visuals turned out. It's a style that we've never really tried before, glad about how it all came along! :)

jamison 2018-08-16 05:02

Really smooth animations for so few pixels (especially dat birb). That bow was REALLY satisfying to use. I survived for 3:03. I kind of liked the lack of music actually, made me feel isolated and alone.

corbak 2018-08-16 08:42

I really like the graphics, it is beautiful in its genre. Its minimalist but effective. It can be frustrating after few plays, bu the challenge is here. Although it is a little bit hard I must say but it is a very good little game. Well done :)

vincent-knauss 2018-08-17 02:36

Effective graphics, and very engaging gameplay. The world generation aspect was very interesting, too. I liked that I wasn't playing on the same map each time. The transitions between world chunks, I thought were a bit slow

merpader 2018-08-17 02:45

Really fun game! I liked the whole feel of it! I survived for 3:20 mins

ganonwarrior 2018-08-17 04:04

I found it a bit confusing at first but after a few minutes playing I understood how it works! Haha, I really liked the game mainly in the artistic style. good job !

sublustris 2018-08-17 06:14

Looks cool! well done!

gurkenlabs 2018-08-17 11:08

Very solid visuals. The idea itself is great but the gameplay can be expanded upon.

I was surprised when the flood took up the whole ground instantaneously. Once I moved on a hill, there wasn't much to do besides waiting for the next enemy to spawn. And there was no punishment for just staying there at first. Then the health decreased until I died without any explanation. Didn't really get that part :)

Edit: I get it now, you starve... so maybe the this should be indicated a bit clearer.

Other than that, great entry!

tjakka5 2018-08-17 11:09

Cool game! I've made a video about it: https://youtu.be/nOZQQh4vcjU

mrjorts 2018-08-17 12:40

I like the way the flood mechanic makes you think about the terrain height. Good job on the variety of enemies and weapons as well. At first I expected the flood to stay forever, and you'd have to keep finding higher and higher ground each time it rose. I can see how that would have been harder to implement in a jam, but it might make it feel like there is more progression to the game instead of hanging out in the same safe place the whole time.

darylsteak 2018-08-17 13:39

Welp

Welp.png

This was an interesting game that for me had great atmosphere, with the birds and the walking footsteps. The aesthetics were also great and the animations were smooth and nice.

The flood mechanics were a nice touch for the theme, but I think this game can be greatly expanded upon (maybe a building system and more enemies). A very nice game overall.

megalink 2018-08-17 20:39

Thanks for the constructive feedback everyone! We really appreciate it. :)

grahhhhhhhhh 2018-08-18 03:11

You responded to my thread requesting honest feedback, so here goes:

I actually really liked this... I was skeptical of the graphics at first, but I gotta say, whatever that first weapon is really worked for me, I enjoyed watching it. Plus killing the enemies was really satisfying.

I felt a little punished when moving onto a new screen and being instantly damaged multiple times by an enemy, but I don't know that I have any real major critiques. I do think this has the potential to be drawn out a little bit further, but I think it might be a challenge for you to keep it fresh. Maybe a crafting system, some overall goal... but I can still see it staying kind of repetitive, maybe it's just best in a jam? You know what, if you were to focus on a new build and take out the flooding, I think you've got the skills to make a full length game that would be really fun to play.

megalink 2018-08-18 06:09

@grahhhhhhhhh Thank you! I'll definitely consider making such changes in a potential post-jam version. A crafting system would work very well in a game like this. :)

raziyya 2018-08-18 10:45

Really enjoyed playing this once I worked out there was more than one screen haha! Hope you continue with this as has great potential as a more fleshed out game.

cydouzo 2018-08-18 11:40

The atmosphere of the game was truly superb (especially thanks to the sfx). Good job!

Now the one thing that I felt missing was an end (or like a goal, maybe a time limit for example?). I felt frustrated that It just ended with a survival time

keyurrana 2018-08-18 18:23

Very nice game. Multiple enemies and weapons were nicely done. Sounds were good too. Screen shake was a good touch.

However, after finding higher ground, I felt safe there and didn't see any point to go lower. You should do something to encourage player movement (like spawning more enemies if the player stays in the same area for too long).

Initially, I thought there was just one small area. During my second try, I started moving more and realized that there's more. You could look into moving the camera with the character or something else to indicate that.

Overall, good job!

megalink 2018-08-18 20:29

Thanks for the feedback @keyurrana @cydouzo @raziyya ! Those are definitely some great ideas to reinforce player exploration, and therefore further enhance the players enjoyment of the game. Initially I thought that the hunger system would be enough to encourage players to not stand idle but obviously I was wrong. More things to see and do in the world could also lessen the chance of players staying still throughout the game. Will look into implementing these ideas in a post-jam version!

tigerclaw 2018-08-18 22:24

It's an interesting game with an interesting use of theme!

enric 2018-08-19 10:23

Very nice game!! My only downside is that there is no music but your sounds were really good. Congrats!!

nam-nguyen 2018-08-19 12:11

Whow, I really liked the game. It was a bit confusing at first that I didn't know that I can move to another tile and stand there helplessly waiting the flood to come. Maybe some arrows on the sides indicating that you can go to that direction would be helpful, also then I would know that I couldn't go up if I have reached the border of the map too. Also some teaching for the bow would be nice as well, I was trying to attack like with the stick, expecting an arrow to go out but it didnt haha. Some collision issue when picking up the loots as well (Im trying to be constructive haha, dont take that as I didnt like the game). I only survived for 2:22 and starved to dead, but I really enjoyed the game. Definitely going with the theme, interesting mechanic, quite immersive environment, GJ!

Edit: It would be such a nice touch if after the flood goes off, you have some food as the animals in that tile die out xD.

megalink 2018-08-19 20:09

@nam-nguyen Thanks for the suggestions! I think it would also be cool if when it floods, the enemies corpses would float to the top of the water before sinking down again. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

yolp900 2018-08-20 21:55

This is a really good game! Really good idea and implementation! Well done

danielpancake 2018-08-23 07:42

Enjoy this game so much! Zelda music fit perfectly. Art and theme executing is amazing

radical-dog 2018-08-23 10:55

This is a solid game, very nice. I would have loved some way to choose not to use the bow when I got it - I didn't want to use it at close quarters!

patrickrmc 2018-08-24 19:55

I like the way the controls feels and I love the character art! The theme is spot on with this entry! I liked that I had to move around so I wouldn't starve and then had to find the fastest route to get to an elevated area

erikiene 2018-08-25 21:50

very cool game! definitely can be built upon to make it even more fun (and i think it'd be worthwhile doing so). I very much enjoyed the audio and visuals, and found the flood mechanic to be unique. The only problem for me was the fact you are actively using the mouse, but the game window doesn't have any borders, so I clicked out of the window and a fox killed me before I could come back :( Awesome work, guys!

darkguardsman 2018-08-27 17:16

Simple game, transitions could use some work. As its very easy to get attacked moving between panels.

void-productions 2018-08-29 19:24

@megalink The atmosphere that this game created was something else really and the ambience was so freaking good, very well done man I loved it. Do give our game a try and give us some feedback.Cheers!

megalink 2018-08-29 20:14

Thanks @void-productions ! I'll try your game now. :)

andrei9 2018-09-03 13:15

I liked the Graphics, and the Gameplay was fun, Nice Game.

hellsquirrel 2018-09-04 14:10

Nice game!

2018-09-12 12:15

Cool game! I included it in my compilation video series of the Ludum Dare 42 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/VePoszPJyYA
