Best music in ld42, and possibly best game too
That was a ton of fun! My ending was 12:06:08 with 50 deaths. Personally, I don't think the jump mechanic adds a whole lot to this game (I beat it without using jump once... I sorta got distracted by the terra-gun and forgot I had a jump)
I love the pixel terrain, reminds me of things like the sand playground and old games like Scorched Earth. The difficulty ramp feels very natural and the music/screen shake all fits together in a very nice package. Well done!
Loved the gameplay and your take on the theme, it is really well executed. Only minor detail is that there could be some sort of cooldown between picking up last "earth" to power-up and being able to shoot, as I often found myself shooting by accident from pushing drill button one too many times, not knowing when it's enough. Of course it could also be additional challenge, but.. :)
Excellent work Very efficient mechanic and lovely, crunchy dirt mechanic
@bitdecay Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, the jump is mostly there so you don't get too trapped by the hoppers, or so you can jump between islands if you happen to make them by accident. If you watch my play-through in the YouTube video, I barely jumped at all, so you've got a point. It would be nice if I had a ground-based enemy that you were required to jump over, but considering your projectiles only fire upward, I'm not sure how you'd go about killing it. I'll give it some more thought.
@Araklaj Ah, good idea. Perhaps it should be a separate button? I didn't run into that issue because I typically hold X until fully charged, rather than feathering the key, but I'll think of ways to improve it!
5/5 would play again.
The gameplay is very fun!I love the pixel art style!
The graphics, the music, the rhythm, there's everything to put you *in the zone* while playing this endlessly. Well done that's a great entry.
Really love the gameplay !! Just a little detail I can't understand....why my bullet don't collide with enemy's bullet? And what if make a explosion which can kill a lot of enemy when your bullet collide with enemy's bullet ? That may encourages players to try something interesting!
WHOOOOOOOAOAAAAAAA!!! This game wins. Time Played: 26mins 25secs Deaths: 116
Thats insane. Your game is the best.
@Wxzuir great idea! At the very least, your bullet should destroy enemy bullets in its path! I didn’t think of that but it’d make things more fair.
@scott-purcival Wow, thanks for sticking it out! I’m flattered you found it fun enough to keep with it for so many deaths! Did you find it too hard in general or did it still feel fair? I’m a little worried that the last two levels are too challenging.
This game is perhaps the coolest thing I've seen all year. The gameplay is great and the polish level is insane, brilliant atmosphere with all the beating graphics. The difficulty ramp is just perfect to keep you hooked while questioning how you're still going (17min and 70 deaths for me .-.). And you made the music yourself too?! 100/10 <3
pure quality !, love everything, love the pixelated graphics, love the gameplay twist of classic invaders, love the music, love the control, smooth and snappy !, my only problem is the font tho, its sometimes hard to read and blend too much from the background, other than that well done !
This was a very well rounded adorable game, that looks sounds and feels very polished, I love it!
Wow, that was amazing! Huge respect for the precise pixel-collision system, I love it. I like the simplistic pixel-art and I enjoyed the music. Although I had some difficulties with the final wave, it was fun enough to play to keep me motivated and beat the game! Easily one of the best game's I've played so far!
Stats: 27:42 minutes 149 deaths
The game feel and the pulsing with the beat really took this game to another level
noooice, love the music !
Very good! Well executed and fun gameplay. Suggestion: I can't actually come up with anything that could be better for the game itself. My only wish would be able to have full screen.
Time: 41:49:84 Deaths: 203 I was determined.
Really innovative idea, not to mention loads of fun and extremely polished! My favorite game of the jam so far, good work. My only complaint was that it took me a minute to realize that I wasn't damaging the armored enemy, perhaps having the player bullets get deflected might have made this clearer.
Time: 12:00:48 Deaths: 48
this was a really well done game with nice polish - controls were good, maybe a little strange at first - but overall fun - thanks for making it
Okay; I have some personal heartstrings pulled with the style of this game; the fact that you were able to get the terrain deformation to work THAT well and not freak out is really cool! The consistent style of everything made it feel super polished <3 So; Only one comment that stood out; It felt kind of the opposite of the theme? Not so much that you were running out of space; more that you were running out of materials but in a sense gaining more space as you use the materials. The premise seemed to be directly running out of space for sure but the gameplay didn't quite reflect that I think.
@lexichan There's a duality of loss-of-space in the game. As you use dirt, you'll form holes and islands, so you run out of space to walk and dodge attacks. At the same time, getting too much dirt on the screen makes it easier to run into the flying enemies, so you're running out of open space above your head.
If I were to develop this further, I think I'd try to balance that duality better. Perhaps there'd be certain enemies that drop a lot of dirt, or certain enemies that destroy a lot of dirt. But you're right, as of now those ideas (too much dirt vs too little dirt) kind of clash in the current build and the theme is a bit muddied.
Thanks for the feedback!
I really like this game, controls were good. love the art style and the music with the pulsing environment was spot on. Great job!
great game! loved the artstyle! the back story was cool and the music is just awesome. kinda struggled with the jumping enemies at first since i thought i can shoot sideways but figured out how to kill them. It gets pretty challenging really fast. I love it!
I posted a small update on my itch.io! * @wxzuir Your bullets now destroy enemy bullets. No big explosions, though! * @nick-shooter Your bullets now deflect off the boss when he's invincible. Thanks for the feedback!
Awesommmmme work! Great art, the platforming feel is solid, the voxel work is awesome. The only gripe I have is wishing the earth particles were more interactive, perhaps fluid, and reacted to more of the game. It just feels like it was begging for it.
The enemy variation was good and the telegraphing of patterns was well done. Really great, simple and effective design there too.
Audio is also all round great. Just everything is nice and tiny and great! GOOD WORK! :D
time: 35min, 20 sec deaths:186 Awesome game rating 5 for everytrhing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This game is incredible. Great job!
This moooood! SO damn cool. I love it
Quite a good game, quite hard too. I like it. My eyes did start hurting when the screen's shaking started getting amplified, but that's probably my fault for trying to multi-task, haha. Still, good job!
really awesome. just tons to love here, tutorial needed some work, was confused at first. but after that everything was all good.
Great addictive game. Has this retro-feel in art as in the difficulty of gameplay. Concept is simple, but works super well. You can start feeling the theme after the 3rd level, and it becomes quite intense there! Good job overall :)
Love the subtle but hilarious running animation XD
A great throwback to Atari 2600 games!
Very addictive game. I loved the art and the music. Multiple enemy types made the game so much fun and challenging. Overall, Great work!
Fun addicting game! Feels nostalgic. Got to level 8, but gave up!
I love the gameplay! Audio's awesome, and so is the concept. Overall, great job!
Wow, this is one of my favourite entries! The intro creating context, the audio, the graphics, the concept and gameplay, the tight mechanics. IT's all so perfect! Awesome job! 5/5
@vekstr Thanks! I tried my best to make him as expressive as possible with only 2 frames. Well, technically 4 frames, but the silhouette is only 2 frames. I like how goofy it turned out.
@raccoon-js I'm actually considering making a Pico-8 demake of the game, so it'd be even more Atari-esque :)
One of the best entries so far! Pixel art was gorgeous and the neon aesthetic of the game was brilliantly done. I loved how the screen pulsated to the beat of the music. Theme was very cleverly integrated, excellent use of screenshake and particle effects. Keep up the good work! :)
It is so polished... I don't have much to say other than I LOVE it !
Definitely nailed that nostalgia pixel terrain-destruction vibe of Tank Wars (DOS game) - Good execution of the tutorial.. :ok_hand: - Pretty Addicting (rapid play-through cycle) :ok_hand: - I could see this as a mobile game! :dizzy: - (1-button)[portrait-mode]: Hold to Grab Dirt & Shoot, Tilt or drag-button to move left/right and tap to jump.
Outstanding game! Had a blast playing this on my stream. Very challenging but fair! Your game was played around 0:11 into this vod: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/297885983
Nice work!
