LD42 — Running out of space

SpaceSorter by Major_Sauce 2018-08-21T23:03:48Z

Indeed, it is much easier navigating with the q w e s keys and correcting the trajectory with the a d keys. I think the game would have benifited some larger dumps, or at least, some more walls so that the items don't get stuck that often in a corner X) Otherwise, I really liked the concept, even if I think it doesn't really match the theme, as there i no real pressure or mecanic around the fact that you're running out of space. A win/lose state could have been nice to. It was fun dashing through space, scoring dump goals though X)

Rhythm Doodle by Ascension 2018-08-22T14:11:34Z

It was a really nice game ^^

My only complain would be that the levels lack variety. It could have been nice to have some levels with paths and not on a rectangular grid.

I also found a bug : if you die having a combo (for instance, going on the star that stands on a white tile), then you will keep your combo if you respawn and immediately walk on another white tile.

Cosmic Collapse by ryusui 2018-08-17T20:32:58Z

This game is amazing. When it starts to speed up, you really feel the pressure. "I am in line with a few more crystals, but the ground is falling so quickly". I died so much times because of greed X)

I just experienced some lag when the game started to run super quick (at around 700 crystals), but it was still playable. And I often found myself hitting a barricade that was hard to see at high speeds. Maybe that making them more visible would be fairer.

A great runner overall, that I will continue to play for a few days for sure !

Pianobots by fonserbc 2018-08-23T23:13:15Z

I completely got hooked up.

You managed to make such a game that can suit both players who have don't know anything about music, and players who do, as you can either try to randomly find the right solution (which still is fun) or try to find it as quickly as possible.

The graphics are very lovely, and the concept fits in a clever way the theme. And hearing the spectators applaude, react, hum and cough makes the whole experience very dynamic and "alive".

The only complaint I have is that it can be quite tedious to turn on the robots when the music failed. I think the noise of the robot arms colliding with an animation would have done the job.

Good job ^^

2nd place on the leaderboard, 1st try ;D 2nd place.png

I can't find a single negative aspect about this game. It's fun, it's hard, it's beautiful ! You have to anticipate, react quickly, plan in advance.

It's just great !

Well, if I search hard enough, I could tell that the fact you have to press two keys to get your character moving along a line isn't the most easy thing to get used to. Maybe letting the player choose whether they want to have their character moving according to the room axes or according to the screen would have been nice, but neither of this methods are that hard to learn.

Reply All by Dilem 2018-08-16T20:17:02Z

I got so trolled with the emails I read to quickly X) It is really fun nonetheless. Sure it could have benefited some musics to get along with the tense gameplay of day 2, but achieving such a nice game in 48 hours, that's really impressive. I just found the font quite hard to read in fullscreen, so for any future player reading this, you may want to turn down the window size ;)

Blocks by Anubhav Kashyap 2018-08-25T20:28:37Z

It is a really good game !^

Aside from what most of people pointed out until now, I noticed it was much easier playing the game if I stayed in the right corner, watching out the shadow of the boxes that were to fall, dodged them, and then went back to that corner. I know a game depends of what you make of it, so I quickly abandonned that technique, as it is much funnier to stay in the middle ;)

Anyways, you did an amazing job in so little time, and I enjoyed it ^^

Constellations by pmarincak 2018-08-23T23:32:41Z

I got around 2060 after playing it five times. It is really relaxing drawing constellations and figuring out what you can or can't do, trying to maximize the amount of stars and of lines in your constellations.

The only downside was the camera. It would have been nice for instance to move it around with keys instead of having to move the mouse, unwillingly linking your constellation to stars. Or at least, make the camera move more slowly.

Otherwise, I really enjoyed the game. Good work ^^

Trophy Hunter by dasun 2018-08-23T14:15:51Z

I like so much the concept of gradually loosing abilities. And it works so well in that game, which perfectly fits into the theme !

The difficulty curve is like perfect, and the fact that you contribute to it according to your playstyle is so good.

I love it !

Bus Stop Blast by NotSpaghettiGames 2018-08-26T11:20:43Z

I really enjoyed that game ^^

I managed to drive carefully, up until I had one patch of kids left that I couldn't find. Panic mode was then engaged, and it was all about destroying houses to find that giant X X) I guess not making these locations too visible is part of what makes the game fun.

I don't think the minimap was really useful though, as I couldn't zoom out that much, but it was still a nice touch, seeing buildings getting destroyed from your perspective and from above.

Good job !

Cryptovirus by Corqi 2018-08-17T16:08:47Z

I really enjoyed this game, even though it is not the first one with such gameplay that I see in this jam.

I don't think the difficulty spike is that much a problem of difficulty (I even thought all levels were pretty straight forward), but of size. A single mistake at the very end of a big level forces you to start over, even if you understood the begining of the level. Maybe shorter levels, or smaller parts linked with a checkpoint system would be more forgiving, and would better keep players engaged.

However, the mecanics were introduced through levels, and not through a tutorial, which is really nice (and you feel smart understanding it). So that's a huge quality. And each level (at least in the begining) was built around a new concept.

Plus the game was rather cute ^^

Keep it up !

ClapBang by arron-fowler 2018-08-26T11:56:51Z

Wow... I am just impressed by the amount of comments and your long and constructive answers to almost all of them. You really care about improving, don't you !

I don't have much to say apart from all that have been said. It's a really great game, and it would be a complete blast in multiplayer, so I'll definitely stay tuned for that update.

Maybe that part of why the controls aren't totally obvious is because buildings are not on a single tile. I didn't find it obvious that I could interact with them, and once I read again the explanations, I didn't know where to click to do so (I eventually nailed it though)

Otherwise, I love this concept of real time turn based game. It makes for some intersting choices : should I move on a close tile to reload quicker, or should I cover a greater distance, making me more vulnerable and predictable. Even if the first option seems preferable, the fact that the terrain is shrinking and that powerups are in buildings gives the player incentive to also do the latter.

Keep it up !

Worm Island by pabloplr 2018-08-21T12:03:08Z

I liked the concept and the art ! It looked really funny. The quirky movements make for some interesting gameplay (I discovered half way through the game you can swipe apples while swinging your body). I managed to win with two trees.

The fact that apples are gradually falling faster allows you to experiment the gameplay before it starts to get overwhelming, which is really pleasant.

However, I am not sure a worm was the best way to convey your idea for the game, as I thought it would eat apples, and maybe grow taller, not push them. And you should have warned before the end of the game that pressing space restarts the game (I thought it was for eating apples X) )

Other than that, it is a really solid entry. Keep it up ^^ !

Personal Space by ryan123rudder 2018-08-21T18:44:29Z

It is fitting the theme in an original way to say the least X) I couldn't find the doggo though :(

BulletJam by C.Even 2018-08-17T17:05:50Z

It's the first time in a shooter game that I find a use not to shoot, other than amo or slowing time. It sure fits the theme very well, and is an original idea on its own.

The art was super cool (when there were no monsters on screen, I couldn't stop moving my mouse and looking at my characters arms) and very colorful !

Keep it up ^^

duty madness by bhavesh_tiwari 2018-08-25T19:35:29Z

Well, this game has more depth than it seems. It took me a couple tries to find how to juggle with all those quirky tables, which is quite fun, and is an original take on the serving games. I even managed to get out of bounds bouncing on one X)

Otherwise, I didn't understood immediately where I had to click to get the food, but I figured it out pretty quickly. And as others have said, once I pushed all the tables and that I got a clean way, the game only consisted in going back and forth. Maybe that focusing the game more on having to dodge tables and chairs which could get harder as time goes on because you just makes them fall, making it even harder to navigate, would have better suited the theùe and overcome that back and forth monotony

You have the grounds for a nice game though with these bumping physics. Good job, especially in 48 hours ^^

Space Golf by ctran13 2018-08-16T17:41:29Z

Wow... I suck at this game. I couldn't pass the 2nd level X) But it was pretty fun ! I don't think it fits the theme taht well so. I'll try to go further into this game later ;)

A simple life by Amour Du Pain 2018-08-17T16:25:10Z

This game is so great and interesting ! Even if it lasted a minute, it definitely nailed it. Everything goes perfectly along to give that mood. I definitely would like to see it completed...

*...because don't tell me life ends without having time to do more  *

Not Enough Room in this Space[bar] by fakefirefly 2018-08-21T13:50:03Z

We had much fun playing this game with my sister. It is just a shame we have an AZERTY keyboard, and that it was quite hard to match the correct keys.

Otherwise, it was fun as it was, but with no proper end state, we ended up maching keys until **TOTAL DOMINATION** of the keyboard.

Acid Sink by Supernapie 2018-08-21T18:31:28Z

I found this game to be really immersive. The art, music, etc, go along perfectly !

I just couldn't manage to get out of acid and walljump immediately after, which resolved in death in level 4 :(

Still a really nice game. Good work ^^

RAMbot by lekkel124 2018-08-15T00:09:08Z

Thank you everyone for this feedback ! I've mentioned on the page of the game the mecanics of item corruption and there are now gifs that illustrate them. I guess we were so tired we didn't even think of writing about it X).

RAMbot by lekkel124 2018-08-17T18:00:19Z

@jared-york If you still want to try and confront this game, we finally added a proper written tutorial / help sheet.

RAMbot by lekkel124 2018-08-17T23:19:06Z

@leroyii I didn't even think that mouse controls were a possibility. Now that I consider it, it sounds pretty clever as there is no real purpose to move RAMbot manually for now. Even the features that we wanted to include but couldn't because we didn't have the time could have benefited from that system.

RAMbot by lekkel124 2018-08-21T19:04:40Z

@pattedecanaard It was a nightmare to make levels without testing them at the same time X)

@prodigalson We'll polish the game after the jam as ended. At some point of the making of RAMbot, we wondered about that mecanic, which we thought would go against the core gameplay. However, the game sure does lack an undo button. And we had planned onto adding a lot of other features, but you know... first jam, no time !

@zuhairghias I agree but only partially, because we could find some ways to better introduce the key mecanics. Still without a written tutorial, but maybe by building levels differently. Sure, it has to be challenging, and it will remain challenging throughout future iterations, but it should be challenging because of the mecanics and the puzzles you solve, not because you don't understand how the game works. Thanks though ;)

RAMbot by lekkel124 2018-08-23T23:41:11Z

@zoltancoccyx @tlcoc I agree, RAMbot moves quite slowly.

On second thoughts, movements on a grid would have suited the game better, so much so slownes wouldn't have been such a problem.

RAMbot by lekkel124 2018-08-24T20:51:29Z

Thanks for everyone's feedback. Reading them warms our hearth, and give us the motivation to improve !

@adrisj7 The corruption mechanic (yep, I just figured out it was spelled with a "h") has a double purpose : it serves as a way to be careful with the weight of the items stored, but you can also pass through glitched item and unlock paths. As such, one should juggle between corrupting items or having to keep them unglitched in order to solve the puzzle.

I think an "undo last move" button may help making it less punishing though.

@pavel-smejkal Collisions are an issue I didn't really had the time to address. Do you think I am allowed to change them for the ludum dare build, or should I do a post-jam version ?

Pathcloser by Suchista 2018-08-15T19:44:08Z

Owww... Why is it so short :3

It was really fun, and funny ! I laughed on multiple occasions. And it fits the theme perfectly ! Everything went smooth, and it wasn't to hard to understand how the game works, so it's a good point. But I often found myself going one step too far, hence having to restart the level (it may be because of my sloppy reflexes though). However, It wasn't too much of a hassle as the game runs pretty quickly and the puzzles aren't that big.

I'm looking forward for more levels if you plan to add some.

By the way...

that was way to tempting.png

...you knew we'd go in there, didya :P

BugSurvive by TLCoC 2018-08-21T14:11:20Z

The game was quite intersting, and suited well the theme. The fact that there are homing yellow bugs and red, land destroying ones really forces the player to choose carefully its target... Should one better lose land or lose a life ?

I just found a game breaking bug. If you jump and then land in water... you'll be able to walk normally on the water.

Little Bear Planet by gudval 2018-08-21T12:54:25Z

Wow... This feels so polished ! From graphics, to funny dialogues, musics, and remapable keys... It's stunning.

As most of the game is flawless, or has been told already, I'll try to comment on the levels construction of this game... which I don't have much to say about !

I really like how most of the mecanics (except in the beginning but hey, you have to start somewhere) are conveyed by pure gameplay with first, a level introducing the mecanic, then other levels working around it, gradually becoming harder and introducing more mecanics. Often the level names are a useful help, that foreshadow what new problem there will be to slove, and those names can even help even find solutions (I laughed when I saw a level named "mean"... and it was X) ).

However, it might have been an error to introduce the scoring system as such. I tried to get optimal solutions, until I realised that even if I couldn't perform a certain action while holding a box, pressing the key to perform such action would still count as a move. And after wanting to do a 180° angle for the tenth time, the move system became either irrelevant, either bothering.

But hey, I'm complaining about a superb game I really enjoyed, so I'm really looking forward to more !

Keep it up ^^

ground_0 by Jamison 2018-08-23T15:08:57Z

It is so polished... I don't have much to say other than I LOVE it !

RGBot by Jared York 2018-08-15T19:16:36Z

While playing this game... I got completely invested and completely forgot it was a jam game X).

The button mecanics are quite simple but nicely executed and easily understandable.

I just think the battery depletion could have been faster, because it never felt like a genuine time constraint, more like a (huge) health bar. Same with the glitch wall. I saw it move in level 3, but once I started the two other levels, I never saw it again, which is a shame because the atmosphere was really nice. It felt really captivating with all the particle effects of the *corruption wall of death*, the level slowly fading out as your battery diminishes, and all the platforms blinking.

Plus I don't know if it was intended, but does the wall move at the pace of the musics ?

Much detail was put in this game, and it was fun discovering all those effects !

Thanks for that fun moment ^^

Delusional Thoughts by aCuriosity 2018-08-26T12:13:37Z

Wow... It was so moody and funny and hilarious and challenging !

Do you think you could upload that music somewhere ? I'm not a native english speaker and it was kinda hard to focus on both the gameplay and the lyrics, which I'd like to hear !

Great job, especially in 48 hours !

Hammer Dongers by Crave 2018-08-24T17:05:13Z

I had a blast ! It's fast-paced, challenging, and it leads to very funny situations. I'll definitely keep playing it. Nice work ^^

DataSkream by Sollara Games 2018-08-28T23:31:28Z

It's really good ! I couldn't help but hit the replay button to get a better score (I got around 119 000)

The fact that the game gets harder and harder as the music builds up is definitively a nice touch and it reminds me a lot of the shooter game symphony.

Plus everything is really responsive to the player's action (the platforms turning yellow for instance), so it makes the game feel really dynamic.

I just had trouble with the respawn platform, often falling to my doom everytime I tried to get off it, or blocking myself near/under it and... also falling X)

Otherwise, I enjoyed it ! Good work ^^

CrumbleDungeon by Celdur 2018-08-15T17:18:57Z

It was a short yet fun experience. The art was very lovely, and that "make it fit in the inventory" concept was really interesting. I'd be glad to see it expanded (with more levels for instance). Apart from that, I don't have much else to say that hasn't been told already. Good work ^^

Hot News, Good News by RiptideStudio 2018-08-21T14:38:27Z

I really enjoyed this game !

You can figure out rather logically what works or doesn't for your journal, and create glueing strategies (brace for the coffee add X) )

It was quite hard sometimes to take an article or an add out of the stock, but I got used to it.

Nice work !

Shape Smash by Devin_Brimer 2018-08-15T18:46:03Z

*60 seconds in* : "If I can get over 100 seconds, I rate this game"

*90 seconds in* : "Nooo... I'm so close..."

*96 seconds in* : This last piece is going to make it full

*98 seconds in* : All orange shapes disappear, I lose a half of what was in the jar

__**EPIC !**__

I held on to around 137 seconds.

So yeah, it was pretty fun ^^, especially seeing the pieces fly through the screen, spinning like crazy an ending up touching those eraser things... or not.

I don't think changing the jars feels very balanced, but hey, that's some diversity out there.

Maybe an exit game button would have been nice (or at least I couldn't find it)

And I don't know if I'm not skillfull enough, are if it is simply unpossible, but being able to throw pieces while yours go back to its original position could have been really nice !

I also experienced a bug where I hit space but nothing moved on screen, but only once.

Other than that, I had much fun !

And those sound effects... Pure **GENIUS** !

Backpack Quest by polyducks 2018-08-24T23:11:00Z

Really hilarious. I loved the writing, and akward moments ! *wink*

If I remember correctly, I managed to hit 600 points. Best ending ?

Good work !
