Nice game, I really love how you are interpreting the theme

Nice game, I really love how you are interpreting the theme
Cool interpreting of the theme. Like how all the tiles are keyboard keys and they change if you press that key.
I like what you did with the theme, especially when you had different ways to go (platforms that you didn't have to use) and you had to decide how to use up your jumps. I couldn't get past Level 4, but I liked the idea of it - I kept being soooo close to making a jump that I think would have got me to the goal, but couldn't execute it. I was a bit surprised the first few times when I typed "RETRY" because pressing R twice toggles the R keys back off and I had to press "R" another time to retry; it would be neat if I could press Enter and it typed the retry for me. Also, one time on Level 4 I jumped off the top of the screen and the game closed, but I had tried enough that I was able to quickly get through the other three again to get back there. Great job on a fun game!
Funny little game with nice graphics. Your interpretation of the theme is funny, you managed to transform your nice ideas into an nice game. Good work!
Sometimes you can phase through the tiles as well as when you jump and you are travelling back down it you will only stop falling (I assume you are adding velocity rather than setting it or something else is going wrong) but it feels weird from how games usually do double jumps.
I love how interacting with menus is typing and how the level's keys get pushed in when you press them on your keyboard, I would suggest possibly changing the menu interaction to typing it out and when it hits something not there resetting the typing because i ended up typing retry a lot but having to press r again to turn it back on again because to retry you technically need to type rety.
Oh man, I love the concept of that game! "Running out of SPACE", well, that's a badass interpreting of the theme, dude!
The only issue I meet is: "When you die and have to type RETRY... you actually need to type RETY or RETRYR"
Nice job!
Nice interpretion of the theme. The game itself is fun to play. I don't really like pixel perfect jumps, but at least they're easy to pull of here as you can glide quite slowly.
Retrying could be a bit quicker. I like the idea of the menu in principle, but it gets a bit tiring after a while. Also, I'd like an option to retry during the level when you know you've already used too many jumps.
Double jump is very weird here like @sekwah41 said. If you press space twice quickly, you go very fast, but if you use it at the top of your jump (like you normally need to in games) you don't go high enough. This might be a mechanic, but it's not explained and actually got me stuck for a little while.
I do like how pretty much everything is a keyboard key, it really has a nice theme going.
Also cool that you added the source code even though it's a jam game by the way! Not going to use it myself, but it's a cool thing to do anyway.
I like your take on running out of space. Graphics were decent, and I liked the music. I noticed that whenever I fail a level and I type 'Retry', the second time I press the 'R' key it un-presses it and I have to press it again, which was a little annoying. But overall it was a very nice game, good job!
You know... about 18 hours into this dare I figured out that space could mean space bar. @florian-van-strien put all of my critiques best. How the double jump is a little off, and it's slightly frustrating that I need to type "rety" to retry, because r hits down then up if you spell it out, however... all that said, I think you nailed the theme, and I love that the main character is the actual space bar! Too funny
Hey, you stole our idea! Or at least part of it. More seriously, nice game, I love the fact that you can type on your keyboard while playing and see the keys being pressed on the screen. On the downside, I'm not fan with the pixel perfect design, and I'm not sure whether it is possible to beat level 4
The visuals are appealing to me, I've always been fond of simplistic art styles like this.
I think the music loop could be made more seamless. That said, however, I really like it! I think the sound effects are well done, too.
You took a more creative route with the theme, and in my opinion, you did well at implementing the idea into the gameplay. I think it's somewhat innovative as well.
The level of difficulty was just a little too much for me, and I couldn't make it past level 4. The jumping was tricky at first, because I didn't realize that double jumping sooner would make you go higher. If you made the fourth level just a little easier, I think the difficulty would be more well-balanced. All that being said, I had fun doing the first few levels, and I even enjoyed attempting level 4!
Overall, I like this! It's a neat little game and I think it has a clever interpretation of the theme.
I like the UI and the interaction with the UI. Like someone said above, the retry is buggy and always registers only "etry" and I need to add an r at the end, so like "retryr". Also I think the indication of which key has been pressed and not is not very clear to see. For example when I mess up the typing, I should be able to know which key I need to toggle, and I need to know that exact key, otherwise it wont work. Also there is a performance issue in level 3, super laggy. All in all, a very fun little game that fits in with the theme :D
Very creative interpretation of the theme, and I love how the room reacts to the input of any key it has! Really lovely touch to it. Great entry!
Hey nice pun/game :yum:
Loved the first level, liked the second level, and I found level 3 very frustrating
Some constructive feedback:
· RetryR? (you already know won't further elaborate, but was frustrating)
· I believe some visual feedback on when you can or can't use the space anymore would help the game feel way better. The worst issue I found ( and mostly the only one ) was that I couldn't manage my spaces comfortably as I couldn't tell when I could or couldn't make another succesful jump. I literally died 25 times on level 3's first row's last jump because I thought I couldn't jump 3 times.
Overall nice concept, and funny idea :v:
The "Retry" button is fixed. :relieved: @manusaiz @nam-nguyen @grahhhhhhhhh @oriondark7 @stroe-andrew @sekwah41 @fractalsunrise
Awesome graphics. I really like this idea with SPACE BAR not SPACE =)). It plays and feels good. Good job!
Very cool concept! Really good how you used the theme. Gameplay is fluid and levels are well designed.
the game crashed at level 2 ;-;
Heh, good to see we're not the only ones interpreting the theme this way! Amazing work! Love how the environment buttons press down when you press them. Also, how frustrating the game is!(which is a good thing for a platformer sometimes, definitely is for me). That ceiling on the 3rd level... Awesome job, keep at it :thumbsup_tone1:
Nice platformer, built upon a cool interpretation of the theme !
Pros : - Fun concept, and great take on the theme - Visual identity on point - Catchy chiptune background track - Excellent level design - Limited number of jumps gives a puzzle vibe to the game
Cons : - Floaty controls make for a steep difficulty curve
Overall, great job !
Cool mix of platforming and puzzlesolving. Couldn't really figure out lvl 4, guess I'm missing something. It's a nice spin on the theme, but i dont really like the music tbh. Overall clever little game, good job!
I think I won, or the game crashed! This happened when I finished level 2 with 0 jumps left. I like the concept of typing to interact with buttons, but it does become a little bit tedious, especially typing "retry" every time. Maybe you should allow the player to click it, too, and the typing could be an alternative method. What I played before the crash seemed very good, nice job :)
Your use of the theme is the best I've seen so far. Typing the menu option you want is really clever but for retry it starts to become tedious.
Always happy to see Java games here! Nice twist on the theme, it actually took me a while to realise the character is a space bar and not a door haha. I like how the whole level interact when you type on the keyboard, and having to type the words play, next, or retry is clever. (it can become tricky when you use a non qwerty keyboard like mine, but it wasn't an issue here). Great job!
You actually took the same twist on the theme that my team did!
Nice chip tune for the music, and I love the foreground tiles pressing and depressing with your keystrokes.
I feel like thanks to having exactly the number of jumps you need on some of the levels, it forces pixel perfect jumps, which can be somewhat frustrating. Also, it would be nice if each options activated with just the first letter (which can be indicated with an underlined letter) rather than having to type the whole word.
Nice game, Love how everything is balanced! Good luck, Don't forget to take a look at ours if you don't mind and see what it's like when we just focused on graphics in this game jam! Game Link: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/spacelab-42a
