LD42 — Running out of space

Ludum Dare to be Messy! by jharler 2018-08-15T02:14:18Z

This game has mostly basic 3D graphics. For a lot of games, I don't feel like that works well. In this game, though, I feel like you pulled it off in an appealing way!

I think the audio is pretty good, and I like the voices-- they add a little humor to the game!

I feel like the theme could've been implemented in a more effective way; but, the idea is somewhat innovative, and I like that.

The game feels a little slow sometimes, so being able to move a little faster would be nice. Picking up the trash is a little difficult sometimes, so it would also be nice to have an increased pickup range.

As a whole, this game is an interesting experience and I think it's a pretty creative concept! The gameplay is a little slow-paced and feels like it's working against the player just a little, but other than that I like it!

Also, this is unrelated to the feedback, but I went to try the game again and it crashed. [Here's the log.](https://gist.github.com/HunterTowe/0aac6596d5d5c4944d16335c04e8d750#file-log-txt)

@jharler It does crash every time now.

@jharler I tried the updated version and everything seems to be working now.

UEDJ - A Crime-Solving Desk Job by Ovidios 2018-08-16T07:54:54Z

The visuals, to me, were really appealing.

The music, I thought, was actually pretty catchy and the sound effects were good.

The theme was put to use in a rather interesting way, which I like.

The gameplay was really fun, in my opinion. I found the puzzles to be engaging but without being too difficult.

I honestly have nothing negative to note about this game-- it was all a really fun experience for me! I would definitely love to have a more full-scale version of this!

The National Library of Geometric Impossibilities by nanolotl 2018-08-15T10:25:44Z

It was surprisingly fun filling the empty space in the bookshelves and being warped to different areas. To be totally honest, I only completed the first puzzle, and for the rest of the game I guessed the codes (I'll probably replay the game so I can have the full experience).

The simplistic, pixel art style 3D graphics are very appealing to me, so good job on that.

I think the game could've used some music or ambient background noise, but other than that the audio is pretty well done.

I feel like the theme could've been used in a more effective way, but with that being said it's still an interesting interpretation.

This game is a really interesting experience and something I thoroughly enjoyed. All in all, it's an excellent work!

EVOLUTION by Noa Calice 2018-08-16T13:42:41Z

The visuals in this game are great! The music felt a little repetitive after a certain point, but other than that the audio is pretty good. I felt more like the amount of space was limited, and not necessarily like I was running out of room, if that makes sense. So, I feel like the theme could've been implemented in a more effective way. The message in this game was interesting, to say the least. Overall, this game was a very interesting experience and it was really well made!

The Flesh Pit by frankiesmileshow 2018-08-15T04:41:55Z

The gameplay was well done. The difficulty wasn't too overwhelming nor too easy for enjoyment. I thought it was very fun getting a huge weapon and chucking it at the enemies, and honestly just killing them in general!

You did well at incorporating the theme into your game. At first, I felt like blocks of gore were just kind of spawning everywhere; however, as I made it through more waves I really felt the area closing in! I also appreciate that you allow the players to destroy the flesh to clear room. That way, it's still fair.

The visuals, in my opinion, are really good. The tiles and background look very nice. The style of the characters seems a little inconsistent, but with that said I still like them.

I like the audio. The retro sound effects are pretty good and the background noise is somewhat unsettling and sets a mood for the game.

This is a really neat game, and it's quite addicting. I would love to see a full version of this!

Snow Day by chispaLBC 2018-08-16T13:07:09Z

My only complaint is that sometimes I had to click a lot to remove the snow. I'm not sure if it's some sort of strange bug or just a design choice, but I think changing that would make the gameplay feel less interrupted. Other than that, I really enjoyed this peculiar game!

Spacebars by The Triumvirate 2018-08-15T00:38:40Z

The visuals are appealing to me, I've always been fond of simplistic art styles like this.

I think the music loop could be made more seamless. That said, however, I really like it! I think the sound effects are well done, too.

You took a more creative route with the theme, and in my opinion, you did well at implementing the idea into the gameplay. I think it's somewhat innovative as well.

The level of difficulty was just a little too much for me, and I couldn't make it past level 4. The jumping was tricky at first, because I didn't realize that double jumping sooner would make you go higher. If you made the fourth level just a little easier, I think the difficulty would be more well-balanced. All that being said, I had fun doing the first few levels, and I even enjoyed attempting level 4!

Overall, I like this! It's a neat little game and I think it has a clever interpretation of the theme.

Power Plant by Noam 2018-08-14T05:34:57Z

I like the way you did the visuals-- they are simplistic but without being cheap.

There's not much audio, but what you do have of it is decent.

The game as a concept fits the theme, but I think maybe it could be done a little better. Although the flowers do take up room, I feel more like it's time I'm running out of and not necessarily space.

This game felt a little too quick for me to enjoy it at first, because I felt like it ended before I could make any progress; however, that was probably because I was still learning the game. The difficulty was just enough to feel rewarding.

All in all, this game is a good experience! It's something I would like to see be expanded upon in the future!

Sky Dare by zchangvx 2018-08-16T06:19:58Z

The gameplay I think could be better if you used a smoother transition for the difficulty increase. It's also a little frustrating how getting hit will completely stun you, especially when there are lots of enemies and it seems nearly impossible to recover. The controls feel very smooth and mostly nonrestrictive, with the only exception being that the mouse can go outside the window if you're not careful. If you kept the mouse cursor from being able to exit the window, I think the controls would be perfect.

The theme was implemented in an effective way. The player can rebuild the platform when they're not fighting, and when they are fighting the amount of space that's lost comes down to how much they get hit. While a more balanced level of difficulty would make this better in practice, it's still a pretty fair system.

The graphics are rather appealing to me. The background is well done and the character designs are pretty good. The animation isn't too bad, either. I don't have anything very specific to note about the game as far as the visuals.

Overall, there could be a few improvements gameplay-wise. With all that said, however, it's still a really fun game and I enjoyed playing it a lot!

CRUMBLE by whycardboard 2018-08-15T01:25:31Z

I really like the graphics-- I've always been big on simplistic pixel art, and in my opinion it was well done.

The retro-sounding music is something I really like, and the sound effects are pretty good, too.

This game, as an idea, fits the theme very well. Not only that, but you can actually feel it in the gameplay, too, so good job on that!

I like the gameplay, it's fun and it's challenging enough that you feel accomplished for beating a level. For a lot of games, high scores don't really work and they feel forced; however, this game does the score in a way that makes it feel important, and I like that!

Overall, I think this is a really good game!

Chef Frank's Franks by GhostGoatsGames 2018-08-16T09:16:06Z

I'm just going to get straight to the point with this one-- I like it a lot! There's honestly nothing negative I have to say about it, and there aren't any specific improvements I can think of. The only thing I have to say is that I would love to have a larger version of this game!

Don't Drown by schsam 2018-08-16T03:21:09Z

The theme was done really well-- not just the idea, but also the implementation of it into the game.

The gameplay I think could be a little better if it was faster-paced, and perhaps had some checkpoints. With that being said, I still like it. I also like how I can really feel the water overwhelming me-- not only does it make me feel panicked watching that meter go down, but it also makes me feel like I'm running out of space as I get buried under the water.

The visuals, although basic, aren't unappealing. I thought you did especially good on the water particles!

Overall, I think this is a neat little game with an interesting concept!

Boop's Space Adventure by winnie33 2018-08-16T12:36:26Z

I agree with pretty much everything @zeriver said. The game is a bit too difficult, and checkpoints would probably help that a lot. The ending was pure gold, in my opinion! All in all, the game was pretty good! All it really needs is some sound effects and a good difficulty balance.

House of Dog by Pizzasgood 2018-08-13T06:38:51Z

I totally dig the pixel art. While the audio seems pretty minimal, the sounds that are in the game aren't bad. The game fits the theme very well, so good job on that!

Overall, I think this is a nice little game!

Zlinx by frontlinesaint 2018-08-17T11:42:41Z

I like the visuals in this game, especially those fancy jump particles! They did seem to spawn out of place or randomly sometimes (probably a bug?), but they look good, nonetheless!

I thought the music was really calming, although it would've been nice to have it play over the whole game, rather than restarting upon death or level completion.

The theme I thought was used pretty effectively, and I like how on some levels it's the walls that are closing in on you, but on other levels you mix it up and have the water start rising-- it kept things interesting!

The levels were designed quite well. I never felt like I was flying through them, but I didn't feel frustrated either (then again, maybe it was just that music keeping me calm). Seriously though, I felt like it was a really good balance of difficulty!

Overall, this was an interesting game, and very fun to play. Good work!

Ink Flood by Ice Maker 2018-08-16T09:53:13Z

There are some things I noticed while playing: - The play button doesn't work unless the fading transition is done. - The intensity of the boost the TNT crates give you depends on whether or not you're holding the jump button.

The play button is of course just a minor bug. In regards to the TNT crates, I think it would be nice to either have that detail explained in the instructions, or perhaps have them always apply the same force.

Other than that, I really like this! I think the music is actually quite addicting and well made, although it would've been even better if we also had some in-game music. The graphics are really nice in my opinion, and while the text could be a little crisper and less blurry, it's still not bad. The use of the theme in this game was especially good.

All in all, this was a fun little game! Good work!

Ninja Bear by Hunter Towe 2018-08-15T04:12:41Z

@almightytuna Thank you! I was afraid the blue-flamed obstacles might've been a little frustrating, but I was starting to run low on time and had to keep designing the level. Perhaps I can release a patch to improve the collision.

Ninja Bear by Hunter Towe 2018-08-16T04:39:46Z

@ndhr-productions Thank you! There's nothing wrong with you liking the death particles the most. Is it dark? Perhaps a little, but I think it's something we all love!

Ninja Bear by Hunter Towe 2018-08-16T04:43:47Z

@captaindreamcast Thank you very much! It's strange that I never came across that bug while testing, but I'll definitely try to fix it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

Ninja Bear by Hunter Towe 2018-08-16T13:14:47Z

@winnie33 Thank you! I'm not really sure why I made him a ninja bear. It just sort of felt right, you know?

I'll definitely be trying to fix those issues. I always appreciate having these things brought to my attention, so thank you!

Ninja Bear by Hunter Towe 2018-08-16T13:56:49Z

@albin I'm glad you like the game! I knew when I was play testing that the dang flamethrowers would be the downfall of my game. I'll definitely try to adjust the collision (again) soon, though. Oh, and stop it you! The graphics weren't even that good... But seriously, thanks!

Ninja Bear by Hunter Towe 2018-08-16T14:04:30Z

@shp Yeah, it could use a bit of polishing. It was the result of starting to run out of time, and not having much time to begin with, haha. Thank you, though! Also, what was your idea? Did it involve a really random character like my game did?

Ninja Bear by Hunter Towe 2018-08-17T01:50:59Z

@bobo-oh and @raccoon-js Thank you!

@purrfexionator I appreciate all this feedback-- it's truly invaluable! I'll definitely keep the checkpoint thing in mind, and I'm still trying to adjust the collision with the blue-flamed obstacles because I know it's been a problem for a lot of people. I agree on the music, it is a bit strange, but it's actually a lot better than what I normally make, so I'm grateful for that much; however, it's definitely something I'd like to improve next time. Thank you very much, I'm glad you liked my game!

Ninja Bear by Hunter Towe 2018-08-17T03:47:24Z

@ghostgoatsgames Yeah, I didn't know how quickly some players might get tired of dying, so I wanted to make the death sequence as pleasant as I could. Thank you!

Ninja Bear by Hunter Towe 2018-08-17T20:03:54Z

@jharler Yeah, I knew very early on while designing the level that checkpoints were going to be needed. Thank you!

Ninja Bear by Hunter Towe 2018-08-18T10:08:17Z

@cppchriscpp Hey, thanks for playing it! I'm glad it was an enjoyable experience!

Ninja Bear by Hunter Towe 2018-08-18T23:16:00Z

@2bam Thanks! The jittery movement is something that's been bugging me for a while now, so hopefully soon I can eliminate it for good.

Storage Almost Full by Sthor726 2018-08-16T11:56:13Z

This is a really neat game! It's a bit difficult for me, but I like a good challenge. Overall, good work!

Also, I'm just throwing this out there, but I think a good Android port of this game would be awesome!

The Pit by jelbre 2018-08-15T09:23:08Z

I like the graphics. I think the sprite for the player could've been a little smoother and less jagged, but other than that everything is nice-- especially the crisp UI and text!

I find the music rather catchy, so much that I'm a little disappointed it doesn't loop. Seriously, though, I liked it!

The gameplay is fun and different from a lot of things I've seen. I do think that maybe you should increase the player's speed. Other than that, everything is good in my opinion.

I didn't necessarily feel like I was running out of space, because it seemed like I could keep going upwards (however, I didn't make it very far, so let me know if I'm incorrect). With all that said, it still fits the theme pretty well!

Overall, this is a fun little game!

On a side note, congrats on completing your first Ludum Dare project-- it's definitely something to be proud of! :)

Beeb's Adventure by HTMichaeL 2018-08-15T07:15:13Z

This is such a clever interpretation of the theme, and I love it! You run out of space, and it's as simple as that. So, I don't see any way this game couldn't fit the theme.

The graphics are pretty good, overall. I like the way the background was done and I think the tiles look especially nice. Also, I really like the character animation.

I like the music, it was well done and sounds upbeat, so good job in that regard!

I think the gameplay is very good. It's difficult enough that I can't just run through the whole level, but it's not too hard, either. It's a good balance, in my opinion.

I found the ending in this game rather amusing, so you actually did pretty decent with the humor aspect!

Overall, I think this is a really interesting and entertaining game!

Void Incoming by Purrfexionator 2018-08-16T08:41:44Z

The art style in this game is just the sort of thing I like. I will say, though, I think some of the round objects could look a little better if they were smoother and less jagged on the corners. Even then, they're still not bad. I think it's cool that the character design was Scott Cawthon inspired!

The audio was well done. I like the retro sound effects, and I think the footstep sounds that are played while running are a really nice touch.

The theme was used in an effective way. I constantly felt like I was running out of space, which means you did a pretty good job at incorporating the theme into the gameplay.

The gameplay is quite fun. I think one thing that could be improved a little is the collision with the cannonballs. It's also a little hard to keep track of the cannonballs because they blend in perfectly with the walls-- those aren't really big problems, though.

Overall, I think this is a pretty neat game!

Filled to the Brim by REMCO GAMES 2018-08-15T09:38:22Z

I think the visuals were done very well. The music and sounds are pretty good. This is a neat concept and it fits the theme well. I think it was a little too difficult to get a really good score given how easy it was to get a bad one; however, it was still fun. Good job!

LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

The True Treasure Hunter by Kahztein 2018-12-09T18:59:35Z

The visuals were well done in this game! I loved the pixel art and I thought the animations were pretty decent. I also liked that light around the player-- it really added to the mood. Although the music got a little repetitive after a while, it was still pretty good; I do wish there had been more sound effects, though. The use of the theme wasn't bad. As far as gameplay, there could be some small adjustments. The money seems pointless since you regain explorers after restarting the level, so it would be nice if there was more purpose to it. The controls are really smooth, but they do take just a little time to get used to. I did come across some bugs, but none of them were game breaking, so it didn't affect my overall enjoyment of the game. Last, but not least, I really liked the death sequence. The snapshot of the player's death was a nice touch and I found the punchlines amusing! There are a few little things that could be improved, but overall this is a great entry! Well done!

It Must Be Fed by Move127 2018-12-29T18:23:21Z

This was pretty fun! Not sure if there was an end to it, but it was definitely very interesting. The retro graphics and audio were really nice! I loved the dialogue between the cultists throughout the game. Also, I feel like the use of the theme was a little more effective than a lot of other games I've played, so good job on that! Overall, this was really good! It could be awesome to have a larger version of this with a few more features. :)

Garry's Sacrifice by Mordokay 2018-12-21T00:37:55Z

I like the art style, and I think it's nice that you took the time to actually animate it, even if only a little! I think this was a pretty interesting use of the theme, and a very interesting tower defense in general. The game was a bit overwhelming at first, but after re-reading different parts of the game's description I got the hang of it. Also, I was very happy that I was able to pause the game; it allowed me to read through the description without having to worry about Garry reaching the Pit of Hell! This game could definitely use a tutorial of some sort, but I know that's not always an easy thing to add in only a few days.

There are some things that I feel could be improved gameplay-wise. It was a little irritating when I tried to kill the animals but they kept walking away-- or sometimes I would go to grab them and then they would do it. It seemed like each round ended with me putting cooked meat out on the last tile, one immediately after the other just to keep Garry at bay as I used the Positivity Towers on him.

Despite a few minor things, this was actually a pretty fun experience that kept me playing even after the first time. Overall, great entry!

Planet 43 by MyFriendTames 2018-12-11T01:26:09Z

I really like the use of the theme! It could've been implemented into the gameplay more effectively, but I thought it was brilliant how you created a life form inspired by Ludum Dare itself. I also liked how Planet 43 was inspired by this particular Ludum Dare. I love the crisp and animated visuals, but I do wish there was some audio to make it feel more complete. It's fun to watch the Ludums come to life, but it starts to feel a little repetitive after a while. Also, I found that I was able to survive by only left clicking, so you might want to make some adjustments. Otherwise, this is a pretty good entry! You did an excellent job on your first Ludum Dare!

Forgotten Heritage by ded 2018-12-28T23:12:27Z

I certainly didn't expect it to turn all demonic and evil all of a sudden, so good job on surprising me with that! The graphics are pretty good, in my opinion. Also, I thought the audio was really well done and helped increase the mood a bit. All around, an interesting experience!

Your God Demands... by daruudaruu 2018-12-23T11:40:07Z

I'm not quite sure where to start with this one-- everything was so well done! The pixel art was superb, the animations were excellent, and the visuals were awesome in general; like the screen transitions, the screen shake effect, the particles, and the lighting. It's the attention to detail that makes this game feel polished and complete. As far as audio, the music was really good in my opinion, as well as the sound effects. The volume of all the sounds was well balanced and nothing ever felt ear-piercing. I think the mood was generally pretty good-- but the lighting on the Chicken God really amplified it! I feel like the interpretation of the theme wasn't as creative as it could have been, but overall it's still a pretty fun and interesting concept. The gameplay was engaging, and it was as addicting as it was challenging. I really wish I had some useful criticism to offer, but overall the game was very good. The only thing I feel like could use a little adjusting is perhaps the spawning of the creatures-- sometimes they really seem to target one side over the other. Also, the Chicken God seems a bit biased sometimes. I'm not sure if those things are intentional or just a side-effect of the RNG. Like I said, though, this is really good overall. Excellent work!

Santacrifice by SvartTand 2018-12-28T23:56:57Z

I wanted to go for a score of 1,000 but ended up only getting 658. :/

Score aside... The UI does feel a little incomplete, though I think the rest of the graphics are great. The tank movement does feel a little sluggish at times, as other people have mentioned. The audio was amusing. I will say, though, the god threw quite a temper in a relatively short amount of time. :P

No, but seriously, this was a really interesting use of the theme. Really fun gameplay also! This was pretty awesome for something made in only two days! :)

Piper's Quest by Iamsodarncool 2018-12-29T14:46:14Z

Very fun gameplay! I felt like Spider-Man swinging across, lol. The visuals are very nice in this game, although not very animated (understandably, since you only had three days). The cutscenes were awesome, and so was the voice acting! The music was quite vibrant; all around, the audio was fantastic. The theme felt just a little forced at times, and I feel like it wasn't implemented in the most effective way-- but that's alright, because everything else totally made up for it! This game had a nice, happy ending that made me smile, which doesn't seem like a common thing in this Ludum Dare. Overall, this is a pretty awesome entry! :)

GameJam Sacrifices by playball 2018-12-09T02:26:52Z

The constant obstacles felt all too familiar! I liked the art style in this game, and the audio was very well done! Also, I liked the use of the theme; it was simplistic, but it led to an entertaining and relatable experience. The game was a little confusing at first. Although it didn't take long to adapt, it still would've been nice if there was some sort of tutorial. That's just a small thing, though. Overall, this was a great entry! Well done!

Consilium - A history of life and choices by Gaming Night 2018-12-09T16:11:16Z

I really liked the visuals! You used a nice color for the background that wasn't pure white, and the text looked really smooth. Also, the custom cursor was a really nice touch; it helps give your game more personality. I thought you put the theme to pretty good use. You may want to adjust some things, though, because I was able to get as high a score fully progressing the tiles as I was growing them less. It seemed impossible to maintain society after a certain point, so maybe the difficulty could be balanced just a little (although it could be because I'm not very good). This is just my own idea, but I think it could be nice to have some sort of in-game shop where you can purchase useful items to help you maintain the growth of society-- these items could come at the cost of some of the player's score, which certainly wouldn't stray from the theme. Other than a couple small things, this was an all around great entry!

Death's Reward by manuu 2018-12-28T22:04:38Z

Nice graphics! They're clean with very smooth animations-- also, it seems you implemented some post-processing effects (if so, good use). The mood was pretty decent, especially for a 2D side-view game. The gameplay started to feel a little repetitive by the end; I will say, however, that I was glad there were checkpoints. I feel like the theme could have been used more effectively, but overall, not too bad!

TechnoAnxiety by RomaRogov 2018-12-29T19:20:49Z

At first, I didn't realize I had to jump on the mines (my fault for not paying enough attention to the description), but once I realized how it all worked it was fun to play. Good job on the music! I do wish there was a way to move without having to click repeatedly, because boy is my hand tired after that!

Aside from that, though, this isn't too bad!

Chickens For My Lord by Zayah0_0 2018-12-08T18:39:56Z

There are some things that could be improved. The controls make it hard for me to move around and toggle the vacuum mode at the same time. I also think the level design could've been a little more intuitive. In general, it seems like the physics are what really need to be improved. They make it hard to get around in the levels, avoid enemies, and sometimes I even get stuck inside the enemies.

Some suggestions would be (and these are just my personal opinions) to add alternate controls for people like me who struggle to switch modes while also interacting with the environment-- preferably only one key, so there would be less chance of us accidentally pressing the wrong one. As for the trees, instead of doing nothing when the player hasn't reached the minimum amount of souls, perhaps there could be something such as a text popup to let the players know they need more. If the physics were improved a bit, so that you don't get stuck inside of things, the game would probably be much easier and feel less unfair.

In general, I do like the idea of this game. It's something I could see myself thoroughly enjoying if perfected, and for some reason I find the concept of going around sucking up chickens rather amusing! The graphics and music are nostalgic; they give me a similar feel to the Flash games I loved playing when I was younger. There are some things that can be improved, but overall this is still a neat game. Keep up the good work!

Dino Jump by joll05 2018-12-28T22:25:20Z

The input wasn't very responsive at times (as mentioned in the game's description), but I was still able to make it through the level. The game has a nice retro feel to it, and it takes me back to my younger days of jumping off cliffs with Yoshi (although I'm not sure if that was the intention)! I think this could use more content, and perhaps a little polishing. Overall, though, not too bad!

Gods must be hungry by paveljezek 2018-12-29T14:18:39Z

Awesome visuals, in my opinion! The audio was superb, and really intensified the mood! Fun gameplay, although a little difficult for me-- but that probably has more to do with my skills than the game itself. This is pretty awesome all around! :)

Sacrifice to win by Codinggamer 2018-12-29T15:08:01Z

I love how an actual platform is generated, as opposed to spawning a bloody corpse like most games seem to do. Graphics are nice-- the character looks like a less round, slightly odd-shaped, but equally cute Kirby! The in-game background helped the mood significantly, so good job on that! Sometimes, the positioning of the platforms that spawned felt just a little off. There also seemed to be some volume balancing issues (some sound effects being much louder/quieter than the others), but the actual sound effects were nice. It would have been nice if the game had some more levels, because as it is now it's fun but short-lived. Aside from some of those small things, this is a pretty good entry! :)

Oh Those Bloody Angels! by DriagonV 2018-12-28T23:31:51Z

The music is pretty good, although it would've be nice to have some sound effects as well. I personally like the pixel art. Overall, not bad for something made over the weekend!

The Shrining by Hunter Towe 2018-12-06T02:23:36Z

@ente What exactly happened? Did it get stuck on the loading screen? If so, try refreshing a time or two.

The Shrining by Hunter Towe 2018-12-06T04:16:07Z

@ente There's nothing to the wolf with the afro. It's just something weird I've been obsessed with for a while. I consider the stay in bed ending the worst because of how short and boring it is compared to the others (in my opinion), but I can definitely see why most people would probably consider it the best! I would've liked for the gameplay to be a little more engaging as you mentioned, but with little time I decided to focus more on the dialogue and story. I'm not trying to justify or excuse the flaws of the game. I just wanted to give some clarification.

Thank you very much for the feedback! These are things I'll definitely keep in mind for the future!

The Shrining by Hunter Towe 2018-12-09T19:54:32Z

@royur I didn't feel like a happy ending would fit the theme, so sadly, no. Actually, those "cloudy people" were corpses (piles of blood and skulls). I guess I should've spent a few extra minutes perfecting those sprites, eh? I felt rushed and just went with the first thing I made, so that's on me. But hey, thanks for trying my game!

The Shrining by Hunter Towe 2018-12-11T01:58:00Z

@myfriendtames Thank you! Also, thanks for giving my game a try!

The Shrining by Hunter Towe 2018-12-24T18:35:34Z

@acaral I was going for a slight Earthbound feel, so thanks!

@shakedimus Thank you! I agree-- more gameplay would've really enhanced the overall experience. With only two days to make the game, I wanted to fit in as much story as I could, and unfortunately I ended up almost entirely neglecting the gameplay. That's probably not such a wise thing to do in Ludum Dare, and probably something I won't do next time.

The Shrining by Hunter Towe 2018-12-29T06:48:51Z

@commanderstitch Which death did you get?

The Shrining by Hunter Towe 2018-12-29T22:07:58Z

@lastleaf, @izunah I think story has always been more of a priority for me, although I would've liked to add more actual gameplay. I also would've liked to have checkpoints, so walking all over again wouldn't be necessary for getting each ending. With only two days, I guess you could say that some things had to be sacrificed, eh? In all seriousness, thanks very much for trying my game!

The Shrining by Hunter Towe 2018-12-30T16:13:42Z

@kaeveris Thanks!

Cheela by Shakedimus 2018-12-28T21:45:00Z

I hate to echo what other people have said, but these seem to be the weak points: graphics (very simplistic), audio (repetitive fast), and the gameplay (a bit confusing). I know it's hard to make a polished game in such a short amount of time, so it's all very understandable. It was actually very easy to play once I saw the gif at the top of the page, although it would've been nice to have an in-game tutorial. Also, it was a bit irritating because I never really felt in control of the units-- they just seemed to move totally randomly sometimes, regardless of where I tried making them go. It is a fun concept in my opinion, but I guess a few days just isn't much time to execute it very effectively. Kudos for making anything in such a short amount of time, though!

Cult Village by stellaryyan2 2018-12-20T02:37:21Z

I liked the animated pixel art! The audio was pretty well done, I thought. The controls took a moment to adjust to, but after I got used to them the game was simple enough to play. It was a little difficult for me, but that probably has more to do with me not being the most strategic player. :P

It was pretty fun sacrificing the villagers and watching them blow up; on the other hand, it was really scary whenever I got punished. Also, I thought having the different screams (male, female, child, etc.) was a nice touch. Overall, good entry! :)

Make The Cut! by Dillon Moore 2018-12-28T21:24:13Z

The dog barks made me laugh (not sure if that was the intention), but it was actually kind of catchy too. Very interesting game mechanics, I must say. All around, pretty fun game! I don't have much criticism to give other than the levels not really having any difficulty increase. Aside from that, you all did quite well for your first Ludum Dare. Good work! :)

Don’t eat CHICKEN ! by Kasaki 2018-12-29T00:17:46Z

It's like a tower-defense... with a twist! Seriously though, this was a pretty clever idea! Some audio would've been nice, but I know certain things tend to get left out with so little time to make the game. Needless to say, it's a little incomplete and I'm sure there's more you all were wanting to add in. Overall, this isn't bad for something made in only a few days!

The Sacrificer by Deemoo 2018-12-29T15:33:13Z

I hate to echo what others have said, but the gameplay gets repetitive pretty quickly. I basically just sat there left clicking nonstop. It would definitely be nice if there was some way to win. What actually made me lose was purchasing a tower too fast-- I did it as soon as I had 50 life and I died upon getting it, lol! This isn't terrible for something made in only a few days, though. Kudos for completing your fist Ludum Dare! :)

A Town of Questionable Morals by CaseyH 2018-12-22T01:06:04Z

I want to say first off that the tutorial was a very good thing to add in. It's very helpful and to the point, so good job on that! I love the use of the theme. I mean, who isn't intrigued by a game where the core mechanic is making love so passionate it shakes the Earth? This is very innovative, in my opinion. Sacrificing the babies might not be so original, but everything else more than makes up for it.

There are a lot of things I liked, so I thought it would be good to make a list. This contains general things, so it's not incredibly detailed. Here are the main things I thought were good:

- Tutorial - To the point - Very helpful

- Use of theme - Very interesting and different - Overall fun concept

- Visuals - Nice pixel art - Beautiful particle effects

- Audio - Well made sound effects

- Controls - Smooth

- Gameplay - Requires focus and effort - Gets hectic as the number of specters increases, but doesn't feel unfair

In contrast, there are some things I thought could be touched up on:

- Controls - Easy to get keys mixed up

- Gameplay - Gets a little repetitive after a while

I think if you set the keys to something farther apart, it would be less easy to mix them up. The repetitiveness is really just a side-effect of having a score-based game, because no one can do the same thing over and over without eventually getting used to it. Don't get me wrong, though-- this was really fun to play! Those little things aside, this was very well done. Great work!

Timmy The Wizard by Jaynerdworld 2018-12-29T16:58:41Z

That post-boss sequence made me laugh-- I wasn't expecting a voice to start speaking to me like that! It did lessen the mood just a little at the end, but it was hilarious (in my opinion, at least) and very unexpected, so that totally made up for it! The camera lerp could probably be adjusted a bit, perhaps so the camera stays one step ahead of the player, rather than behind; it could also use an increase in speed. Aside from that, this was wasn't too bad! It definitely has my favorite ending out of all the games I've played this Ludum Dare, so good job on that!

Leave Them Behind by RedE 2018-12-29T16:29:12Z

Aside from the simple characters, the visuals are actually very good! The game mechanics were really fun, and I think you did an excellent job on designing the levels! There's really nothing useful I have to say, because it would just be something obvious and more or less a side-effect of the time limit (such as the unpolished UI). Overall, though, I think this is a really good entry! :)

The Smuggler by cribin 2018-12-29T15:52:58Z

I really liked this! I didn't make very good decisions in my first playthrough, but the second time went much better! The music sets a rather uneasy mood, and makes you feel even more tense while deciding what to do next. Good job on the narrative, I thought it was pretty good! Overall, I think you did quite well in only a few days!

Reaching The Sky by SKDF 2018-12-07T00:06:10Z

I like the message of this game! I think the personalized features (setting character names and such) is a really nice touch. The animation was smooth, and the moving clouds keep the game from feeling dull when you stop running. I would like if there was more aftermath to the sacrifices, which I think would lead to more emotional conflict. As it is now, I don't think I felt as much guilt as I should have for letting my friends die (but for what it's worth, I still took the time to get the good ending). On one last note, I think a more consistent art style could amplify the mood. I know you didn't make all of the graphics yourself, but I thought it was a tip I'd give for future projects.

Despite having a few things that can be improved, this was a pretty fun game to play, and overall it was a pretty interesting experience! Keep up the good work!

LD44 — Your life is currency

Rhythmic $hooter by dingotime 2019-05-05T01:21:18Z

A very neat concept! Unfortunately, I think since the objects only moved to the beat, it felt a bit choppy and slow. I think having idle animations could help a little with the choppy feel of the game (but I guess the choppiness could also just be the movement-- I'm not sure, though). All around, though, it's pretty neat!

Heart Rush by gurkan96 2019-05-04T21:48:32Z

The gameplay was actually pretty engaging. The controls feel really smooth, which is always a nice thing for the player! This was a simple yet fun game to play. Good work!

remnant. by screamrawr 2019-05-07T01:44:12Z

Sometimes there are strange problems with the camera. The UI and dialogue box could also use a little bit of polish, but they're still not bad (to be specific, I like the crispness and text outline). Cinematic sequences have always appealed to me, and this was no exception! I do feel like it's hard to make an intriguing story with so little time, but it wasn't bad by any means. The enemies were surprisingly good at predicting my movements, and made for a pretty engaging experience; the shadow under the projectiles the enemies shot at me was a nice touch and made it possible to gauge where they would land, so kudos for adding in that minor (but very helpful) detail. Overall, I think this is a pretty good entry!

Highway To Hell by Dev_For_Pizza 2019-05-04T02:05:27Z

The gameplay was fun, although it did start to become repetitive after a few minutes. Also, I never found the merchant. Is it randomized, or is there something I missed? Overall, though, it wasn't too bad!

Meat Mountain by gamechoy 2019-05-04T22:12:08Z

The battle system is very interesting. It could use a little polish, but still, I really liked it! Aside from the obvious things (more polish, balance, etc.) this is a pretty neat entry. Very good concept and I'd love to see more of something like this!

Temple of Malevolence by astrophics 2019-05-07T05:49:16Z

This game has an excellent difficulty curve that brings a good challenge to the player but also allows them to increase their skill. Also, I'm not sure if this was your intention, but this makes me think of Kung Fu for the NES; just like in that game, I constantly found myself kicking and never punching.

But seriously, I had a blast playing this. Overall, great work!

Lifeblood Arena by svntax 2019-05-05T01:00:32Z

I feel like the use of the theme could've been more creative, although it did make for an enjoyable experience. I'm not sure if this has been brought up by anyone else, but at one point I got stuck on one of the enemies-- I couldn't move and died. Overall, though, not bad!

Idle Idol by Daniel Moreno 2019-05-04T21:01:06Z

Wow! I was only planning on playing this for a few quick minutes but ended up playing for over half an hour. The visuals are great, and the gameplay is incredibly engaging and addicting. Excellent job!

Depths by potatolain 2019-05-05T00:49:32Z

This was awesome! At first I was expecting to like it because it was an NES game, but this is unlike any NES game I've ever played-- not because of the gameplay itself, but it's the message and how it's delivered so effectively. The gameplay was fun, and the visuals and audio were definitely nice, but I think it's the use of the theme that amazed me the most. You did phenomenal on this!

Life Merchant by Webox 2019-05-07T02:52:52Z

I really like the visual style! The game was fun, but near the end it was starting to feel just a tad repetitive. Aside from that, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Great work!

risk it all for booty by PBG 2019-05-07T04:37:01Z

I managed to get 27 seconds on my first completion-- which wasn't easy, by the way. I find it hard to believe this was made in one hour, considering it's one of the best games I've played in this jam. But anyway, this is a very fun and engaging short experience with lovely visuals. All around, amazing!

The Coin's Unexpected Adventure by CharlieMrl 2019-05-04T01:21:18Z

This is a really interesting take on the theme. The visuals and sound effects are very cozy, in my opinion. The gameplay is surprisingly engaging for a quick game. If there's one thing that definitely needs some improving, it's the collision (as others have said, I'm sure). Regardless, though, this is a pretty nice entry!

PizzoTyping by Carpin 2019-05-03T05:16:12Z

This is a really interesting take on the theme, although I'm not sure if it's necessarily the most fitting; regardless, I like it. The art is excellent and the music is also darned good! Sometimes it seems like the game isn't wanting to enter what I'm typing-- I'll press a key and nothing will happen at all. (Does it perhaps have something to do with me playing the web build?) Aside from that, this is a very good entry!

Life is Money by Mykola 2019-05-04T14:48:33Z

The gameplay is engaging but pretty difficult (could just be me, though); I suppose that's fitting. Neat concept, and well-executed, because I actually found it to be addicting!

Cash Money Mole by gward2489 2019-05-07T02:38:54Z

This is one of the more creative entries I've seen so far-- it's also one of the entries I might actually replay at some point. It was as simple as it was fun; although I wish it lasted a tad longer, I enjoyed it a lot. All around, great work!

Little Dead Riding Hood by Aim 2019-05-03T07:18:14Z

Not really sure how the theme applies here, and the collision with the spirits could be a little strange at times. The graphics were really nice, though! Aside from the theme and the weird collision, this is an alright game for something made in a short period of time. Good work!

Mayan Mayhem by Arcus 2019-05-04T01:53:21Z

The game could definitely use more content, but I know it can be hard to add a lot of content in a short amount of time. The graphics are pretty nice, though; so is the audio. I think a post-jam version of this could be pretty fun!

Stretchy Cat by Engyne 2019-05-04T22:57:58Z

I was starting to feel like it was too easy, but thankfully, the difficulty ramps up a little; in fact, some of the levels actually took me a few attempts. The difficulty progression is pretty well done and the game is engaging. The graphics are also really nice, and that stretchy cat is cute! All around, nice entry!

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-01T08:24:31Z

@miroreflect I was hoping nobody would find this page until I added some screenshots and improved the description, lol. Thank you for your ratings and feedback, though!

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-03T05:33:06Z

@Pix That's actually just a looping sound I made (didn't have much time left, so it didn't come out like I would've preferred). The jumping does feel a little quirky, doesn't it? It's certainly something I would touch up on for a more serious project. Thank you for your feedback and for trying my game!

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-04T03:16:13Z

@evan-minto Thank you for your feedback! The game could definitely use a bit of polish. Also, for the walking through the walls part, those red slips were my attempt at giving the player a hint; but I think I know what you mean-- it probably wouldn't hurt to have it turn transparent once they're inside of it, as most games do.

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-04T03:18:51Z

@muzigpuzig Thank you! My apologies for the inconvenient controls-- I'll try to keep that in mind next time!

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-04T03:24:40Z

@davidus Thanks! The gravity does feel rather unusual, doesn't it? It might not be the wisest choice, but sometimes I sacrifice a little polish for extra depth to the gameplay.

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-04T03:28:14Z

@dev-for-pizza I appreciate that! The azerty keyboard inconvenience was brought to my attention by another player, and I'll definitely be mindful of that next time!

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-04T03:32:31Z

@carpin Thanks-- I appreciate you giving my game a try!

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-04T03:35:56Z

@gward2489 Thank you! Also, what seemed to be wrong with the audio?

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-04T03:42:56Z

@maggardjosh Yeah, the controls could use some improvements for sure. I didn't want the game to end immediately, so I did go out of my way to add a number of different (but hopefully fun) areas. Thank you very much!

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-04T03:48:55Z

@gward2489 That's actually a sound I made. Needless to say, I'm not much of a music composer, so I didn't even bother trying to make real music for the whole game (especially since I only had around an hour left at the time of making it). Would it have been better to just leave it out? In hindsight, probably.

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-04T21:03:34Z

@Aim Yeah, it's a mustache, lol. The background was done programmatically. Thanks for trying my game!

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-05T02:52:36Z

@al-bueche I thought people would simply avoid the enemies (the ones that move on a strict path, as opposed to chasing you), but for future projects, I'll definitely remember that people may like to kill them all. In regards to the web build loading issue, sometimes when that happens, refreshing works for me; it could be something else, though. Thanks for the feedback!

@cppchriscpp Thanks! Needless to say, I'm a fan of Metroid.

@flashviper Thank you! Level design is a big deal to me, so I really appreciate the feedback you've given. I actually haven't watched any of Mark Brown's videos (I didn't even know about them), but now that you've brought them to my attention, I think I'll check them out.

Nice job on skipping the boss. I'm sure there are a lot of other ways to skip things, knowing how weird the physics tend to get.

Seriously, though, thank you so much!

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-05T06:52:12Z

@webox Thanks! I agree that some music would be great, as well as a faster pace. Going full literal is usually the easiest way to implement a theme, but it also tends to be less creative than other alternatives.

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-07T20:17:02Z

@reheated This is some good feedback. Thank you!

@mika-la-grand Thanks for trying my game! That's actually a statue, not an enemy. If you want to know what to do (spoiler ahead), you're supposed to get past it by obtaining the strong jump and then killing a blue head. It requires a little bit of exploration.

HWEY Heist by Hunter Towe 2019-05-13T11:40:11Z

@tamail Yeah, if there's one thing this Ludum Dare taught me, it's that sometimes it's better to simply have no music or ambient noise at all. Thank you, though!

Money Mage by FlashViper 2019-05-07T02:24:55Z

I had issues with the camera, and sometimes it would transition to the wrong side of the screen. I ended up having to restart the game for it to work. So needless to say, there's some sort of bug; however, I was able to complete the full game without any problems after restarting. You did an excellent job on making the game engaging with only a few types of obstacles. I do have a question, though-- was that one pig that always jumps into the spikes put there intentionally to lure players to their death? If so, it worked on me. Aside from some of the bugs, this is a pretty good entry!

Arrow of Light by sylvie 2019-05-03T04:45:40Z

This game had really fun and engaging gameplay. The level design was very good, in my opinion. By the time I reached the end, I felt very satisfied, and the music totally enhanced the mood. All around, this is a really good entry!

Also, on some less relevant side notes... For some reason those enemies on the balloons gave me the vibes of Kirby's Adventure (but I'm pretty sure that wasn't the intent), and the heart flowers were insanely satisfying!

Coin Puzzles by Mika la Grand 2019-05-05T00:10:16Z

A living bag of coins-- that's interesting, to say the least! The controls could use a little bit of polish, but other than that, it was actually rather engaging and fun. Overall, not bad!

On a side note, it seems like the camera sometimes doesn't want to follow the player. Not sure if other people have had this problem, but I thought I'd bring it up.

Vampire Escape by Copito 2019-05-07T03:33:08Z

This is difficult, but pretty fun as well. A more detailed explanation of the game mechanics would be nice, but other than that, I enjoyed this very much!

Coin's Journey by PurpoAppo 2019-05-07T03:02:58Z

This is definitely the life of a coin in a nutshell! The main thing I'm confused about is if there's any way to win-- or is it just a looping coin simulation? Interesting use of the theme, in my opinion. The game could definitely use audio, but overall, not bad.

power+light by Johan Alexandersson 2019-05-04T23:15:53Z

The graphics are pretty nice! The game felt a little hit or miss at times but I still enjoyed it. The dynamic levels are also pretty neat. Were those pre-made levels that got selected randomly, or was it truly dynamic?

By the way, I loved the Zelda reference. ;)

Blood Quest by shaner421 2019-05-03T03:45:18Z

This was a little short, but also fun! Having to choose which weapons to collect or leave made it engaging. Speaking of the weapons, I'm glad there was only one slot for the item, as opposed to having an overly complicated UI-- it kept the gameplay from feeling interrupted and made for a more fluent feel. All around, this is a good entry!

Apple Escape by Allan Urique 2019-05-04T01:38:40Z

Alright, so with the speed I was able to walk through without getting touched; on the other hand, using the seed gun made me practically unstoppable. If there's something I would suggest, I guess it would be more obstacles in general, to help certain power-ups feel more significant. The game could use a little balancing, but overall, it's not bad for your first entry!

PVP Pong by Lomna 2019-05-07T04:56:20Z

A pretty interesting use of the theme. Single player mode does feel just a tad easy, in my opinion (not sure about multiplayer, since I didn't have anyone to play it with). All around, though, this is a pretty neat entry! A pong game was one of the first things I ever made, so I feel especially fond of this submission.

Oblation by emmyoop 2019-05-07T04:19:55Z

Mostly what @trozen said. I was able to figure out that you use A/D and the arrow keys to move, and W/up arrow key to place pieces of stone and mud. More detailed instructions would still be nice, nonetheless. My biggest question is, is it even possible to lose? Overall, though, an interesting entry with some pretty nice graphics!

Pacemaker by maxtrautwein 2019-05-07T03:50:22Z

This was one of the most interesting games I've played so far! It could definitely use some audio, but it was very enjoyable, nonetheless. Excellent job!

On a side note, I agree with @kultisti about rating other games-- it will probably give you a much more complete feeling if you reach the 20 ratings required to get a score at the end; but I guess you might be planning on it and just haven't gotten around to it yet.

The Bar Game by lemonz-418 2019-05-04T23:28:06Z

I'm still not completely sure how the game works. It seems like certain squares turn you into a different color, and that allows you to do different things? Some of them also warped me, so I'm not sure if that was a bug or by design. Also, was the game over screen because I finished the game, or because I lost? It's a bit confusing without any explanations, but as @pke1029 said, I think it could be a pretty fun game when you get more time to add stuff to it. Kudos for finishing a game with so little time in the first place!

Tooth, Claw & Teacup by HenanBoy 2019-05-07T04:00:58Z

The attack range feels a bit off. I will say, though, that the controls and camera feel very smooth. The visuals and sound effects also had a charm to them. Overall, well done!

Bloodcoin by Persegan 2019-05-04T22:00:28Z

Sometimes when I enter a new room, those moneybags are immediately firing at me and do an insane amount of damage. The collision also seems a little off with the projectiles in general, so maybe you could decrease the damage range just a tad. Aside from some of those small things, though, this is actually a pretty fun little game and I enjoyed playing it. Good work!

Hearts for Coins by Cubicode 2019-05-04T23:48:35Z

The controls felt a little slippery, almost like walking on ice; the heart and coins got stuck in walls quite a bit. Aside from that, I love this concept! Probably one of the most interesting ideas out of the games I've played so far!

Burgers To Die For by Cievers 2019-05-03T06:36:00Z

This is a little difficult for my taste-- sometimes I could've sworn there was literally no difference between what I made and the order. Is it a bug, perhaps? Aside from that, though, I do like the interpretation of the theme-- it's quite humorous!

Duality by Games I Made For Freya 2019-05-07T05:17:17Z

A common use of the theme, but the controls are pretty interesting and engaging. I was confused when I unlocked the third level, died, and then wouldn't spawn when starting the level. If I'm correct, this is because I didn't have the required amount of hearts to play it; I feel like once the levels have been unlocked, you shouldn't have to worry about collecting hearts just to replay them (if my assumptions are correct, that is). Aside from that, this is a pretty neat entry!

Dryad's Forest by miroreflect 2019-05-03T06:00:56Z

Fun concept! I was a little confused about how it worked at first (I didn't know that restoring the trees took your life and attacking humans replenished it). After I realized that, though, I felt more engaged. I guess a brief tutorial explaining how interactions with the environment affect your life would be nice. Aside from that, this isn't bad for something made in just a few days!

The actions are a little repetitive, and all you have to do is give yourself a ton of speed and you're pretty much unstoppable; I will say, though, that the smoke particles and sound effects were pulled off really well, and made the game very satisfying to play. All around, good work!

This was really fun-- I'd love a post-jam version! I couldn't figure out how to get another ending aside from entering the blue light. Is that all there is, or did I miss something? Regardless, it was surprisingly engaging given the small amount of content. Overall, excellent work!

An interesting use of the theme, in my opinion. I guess this is some sort of roguelike, but with the twist of spending your life? I know there's a potion of light, but the initial darkness felt a tad overwhelming, and the enemies attacked me even after reaching the entrance to the next floor which led to me hastily purchasing items. Also, sometimes the game would just lock up entirely and I'm not sure why (this was in the web build). Aside from some little things, I think with a little polishing and balancing this could actually be very fun!
