LD42 — Running out of space

Running out of space by Predominant 2018-08-13T13:40:51Z

Very sweet game, looks great as well. Has a very overcooked-like feeling to it :)

What I found a tad disappointing was that there were not always enough requests, my packages would build up and the only thing I still had to do was to pick up a correct color and deliver it.

Something I found really great and what perhaps might go unnoticed, the controls are really great. Especially the package pickup. The game always knew wat package I wanted to move and put it correctly in my hands. Even if I stood in the middle of a mountain of packages, it would always pick out the one I intended to take.

So, awesome game and great concept! Not super sure what it has to do with running out of space but a great game to play nonetheless! :)

Scaling Up by dalbinblue 2018-08-13T05:01:39Z

Wow... just, _awesome_ game. The entire time I was playing it almost felt like a fully released game.

The graphics are on point, such nice detail it's almost unbelievable. The music really fits the mood as well. And unlike some other developers it didn't feel like you sacrificed gameplay and mechanics for this. In fact, the trade mechanic alone might be worked out more than some other games in their entirety.

I played the entire game, managed to get a score of 129,030 coins. No idea if that is a lot, but it was fun! The voice lines are great as well. "I can pull better stuff out of my hat" had me laughing :)

So, since this game is amazing, I only have a few minor nitpicks to give:

The text has a good font and size, but it felt the lines were glued together. Perhaps give a bit of space between every line so it is easier to distinguish every line. The slime was very fun as well but in my head all slimes are green :)

Overall a very great game, I'm interested to see what you make next!

Out of Inventory Space! by aaranos 2018-08-13T04:34:46Z

Very fun graphics! A 3d blocky world feels awesome. A shame the player characters aren't more interesting than a cube though.

Also, I feel like a very simple AI could've helped here. Very little raters here have another 3 people next to them ready to try this out, so it might've been more fun trying to play against bots (or even, multiplayer?? :p)

Some of the wordings were a bit weird. For example, how can you "draw" a magic? Or "fight" a rest. It seems these are depended on the type of event but a small change in words could be handy.

The items themselves are creative and the concept is also really great. And almost forgot to mention it, but this is one of the few games I've seen which actually uses music, and good music at that. Very cool game overall!

A Blob's Life by pkenney 2018-08-15T08:02:37Z

Awesome game! Mechanics are very fun. Took me a little while to understand that the light blue ones eat the terrain and why suddenly 90% of the map was gone, but after that it was way more interesting to play! It's definitely one of the LD games I've played the longest :)

The monsters are varied and interesting, each has its own unique trait. Would perhaps be even better if the shark grew with every few bites and the light blue ones grew after eating a few terrain tiles, but to be honest that seems very hard to balance :)

What I mostly love about this game is how you have an art style which I really like. Don't really know how to describe it, but perhaps "smooth" colors? Like the green of the mushroom counter or the purple of the size indicator, they fit really well against the background. It gives the game a certain vibe. Also, I love the font you used/made. Looks awesome and seems usable everywhere.

Overall, really polished, visually appealing and fun to play. This kind of games makes LD (even more) worthwhile :)

A Blob's Life by pkenney 2018-08-21T21:21:26Z

Ah, interesting! The pixel tool I use only has RGB but it sounds very handy. It completely escaped me that there was an entire science behind color picking. Initially I read some things about it but after that forgot about it and just picked randomly -- the result of which is pretty clear, haha.

But your method seems smart, picking "complementary" colors (I believe that is the correct term). I'll experiment some with it, thanks for explaining! :)

Compactor Clicker by mrwillowb 2018-08-13T08:35:58Z

Very fun concept! The text at the bottom of the screen is nice as well.

Some small things that kinda bothered me though was the lightning, shapes are now hard to see since most of the field is shadow.

Also, the upgrades menu is not really clear what is your money and what you are buying.

Other than that, very neat game! :)

Squished by PaperAeroplane555 2018-08-13T07:48:15Z

Simple but nice game. I really like the way you did the graphics!

2 minor comments:

Playing games on ludum dare this morning made me accustomed to use spacebar as jumping, and while I understand your choice for W it would be even better if both were mapped to jump (in my opinion)

And on your titlescreen you say to press Enter to restart, however when you die it tells you to press R. Probably a forgotten change?

Anyway, fun and nice game! Sound effects are on point as well.

Field of Bodies by muriel 2018-08-14T18:45:34Z

Very fun, took some time to get it running with java but was worth it.

I got 4 sniper survivors in a row, had to do almost nothing. So after getting bored I restarted and had a lot more fun :) The soundeffects feel a bit weird though, as if they're recorded from some distance. Obviously nobody has great recording hardware, but perhaps you could've made it feel "oomph" with some software? Of course you might not have had the time, but I thought I'd just mention it anyway :)

The options each night were really well chosen. It was never "pick x if y else z" but more a thoughtful process which I really like.

Overall a really great game!

Packboy by piece ofcheese 2018-08-13T04:11:25Z

Tutorial was great, haha. The readme was a nice addition as well.

It felt a bit difficult though and I have no idea what I was doing wrong. What is more important, filling a suitcase completely, having all the stuff be together, or serving a customer in time? Wat if a suitcase got all the items of a customer but it isn't completely full yet? And so on. It was kinda hard to prioritize certain moves if you didn't know which were more important.

Anyway, the mood is definitely great and with some background music and perhaps difficulty changes this would make an awesome game!

Binary Odyssey by Falk Bruskeland 2018-08-13T13:12:55Z

Wow, such a polished and visually appealing game! Animations and art are absolutely on point.

Was a bit surprised when it showed my name, and even more so if I could choose to play on my C: or D: drive. And hell, even the storage filled was about the same as on my own PC. I hope this is all coincidence and you didn't actually fetch those values and implemented a menu for people with multiple drives :)

Overall one of the best games I've played so far. Heaps of fun and once again, looks awesome!

Alone in the Sea by Ephoria 2018-08-13T10:56:03Z

Very cute game with nice graphics! The sound effect is nice to hear as well.

Not really negative points other than the spacebar thing which was already mentioned. And oh yea, I'm kinda disappointed I coulnd't shoot the birds :p

Space Crusher by Brallex 2018-08-13T10:50:10Z

Fun game, but as others already said you can't restart with space.

Also, I very rarely could not move further if i was walking diagonally in a wall. Very weird but not too bothersome.

In general a very nice game :)

Space is Key by BytingGames 2018-08-14T22:09:45Z

Awesome concept and execution. The music, graphics and gameplay are all so well executed. I love the fact that you have to self destruct the ship yourself to stop playing (great animation for that too by the way).

The keyboard movement scheme is great fun as well! Very clear and intuitive with the letters and colored circles.

Keep it up! :)

Piracy: Don't Run Out Of Space by MariosManiatis 2018-08-14T12:24:42Z

Very fun game and concept. Love the posters hanging around as well.

Sensivity was _wayyy_ too high for me though, which was kinda disappointing as it made the game a lot less fun to play. Luckily that's s only a small value to change :)

Shrink Runner 42 by whoisninja 2018-08-13T06:07:00Z

You only learn to make games by trying! "Failures" aren't necessarily bad, however most people think they are. :)

O² Space Salvage by OrionDark7 2018-08-13T06:18:03Z

The main screen and the options menu and tutorial are nicely done, thanks for taking your time to make these!

Planet 'O' by Nehal 2018-08-13T08:19:32Z

This game looks really nice! There are however some things I noticed:

Why do you need to press "M" to launch a rocket? To me it would feel more logical if you could "press" a button with a mouse click. Or even a letter close to WASD, zo you don't have to move your hand.

Also, there is a difference between the fuel meter and the launch panel. Why not combine it? Simply have a launch button in the middle of the fuel meter.

Lastly, the info at the top is handy, but it's hard to see what rocket has what number. Perhaps make it more clear or put it on the minimap.

Still, these are only small things. The game feels and looks really great! :)

Personal Space by Hannah19 2018-08-14T19:11:08Z

Awesome game, it seems I was one of the few who understood the controls right away but I understand why it might not be clear. If you run into an object your screen shakes a bit and it is hard to follow what is exactly happening.

I love the concept though and the sound effects were on point. Felt almost like a real party :)

Keep it up!

Tunnel Ride by Xyntell 2018-08-13T08:31:46Z

Fun and addicting game but I find it kinda disappointing you need to spam click to shoot. I wrote a short autoclicker and it felt a _lot_ nicer to me. You can focus on the aiming and moving rather than breaking your hands and mouse by clicking 100 times a second :)

Running out of Platformers by Aret24 2018-08-13T06:40:02Z

Very fun game, amazing graphics. Managed to play it through without dying once (however I will now go die on purpose to see what that looks like ^^). The giant key was also very funny.

Like others already said, music became a bit irritating quickly. Still, very fun game overall!

Colony by thechubbypanda 2018-08-13T08:12:25Z

Cute game! I love the pixel art of the astronaut.

One thing I wonder though, why are there 2 seperate healthbars? You got hearts in the top right and heads in bottom left.

Also minor nitpick: could the camera follow you a bit faster? I felt that most of the time my character was at the side of my screen.

Fun game overall, feels really nice!

Colony by thechubbypanda 2018-08-13T08:37:47Z

Ah, that explains. I always fell in the void but managed to kill all the enemies and never got hit by one. But doing it like that is actually a good idea, since you don't need to worry about the slimes insta killing you :)

Anti-Virus:XP by vamsi sridhar 2018-08-13T09:17:43Z

Fun game! The XP setting is done quite well (however I'd have liked a small icon here or there to resemble a desktop  )

Very glad you implemented autofire, many games here seem to forget just how handy it is. The shoot sounds are made very nicely as well.

Boop's Space Adventure by winnie33 2018-08-12T15:25:08Z

Additional note: make sure to _move_ while cloning yourself, or you'll get stuck in your copy!

(Probably should've made this clear in the game, heh)

Boop's Space Adventure by winnie33 2018-08-13T05:41:29Z

@roberth332 Thanks a lot for the feedback. I completely agree with your comment about the glitchiness, but sadly it is not very easy to prevent without melting your CPU.

Another option was to reset the level if the game thought you were "stuck", but I didn't want to have false positives - nothing more frustrating than having to start over again when doing nothing wrong.

I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it! :)

Boop's Space Adventure by winnie33 2018-08-13T06:32:13Z

@gaoyuan-chen Thanks for the feedback! Happy to hear you like it.

I agree with you, it's too easy to glitch out. Hopeful me thought people would reset if they ran out of space, but of course every gamer will try to continue ;)

Boop's Space Adventure by winnie33 2018-08-13T07:26:23Z

@goutye That is... actually a great idea! Playing with the delay times and so on was a lot of trouble, but what you are saying is brilliant and actually pretty easy to implement. I am not going to update my submission (that would be kinda unfair) but it's definitely something I'll make when continuing work on this! Thanks a ton!

Boop's Space Adventure by winnie33 2018-08-13T10:13:03Z

@brallex I'm glad to hear someone got to end :)

Thanks a lot for not giving up and for playing my game!!

Boop's Space Adventure by winnie33 2018-08-13T10:47:36Z

@alexey-akulovich Thanks for the feedback, very glad to hear!

And I understand your troubles, I noticed it as well when playtesting. It happens if you don't reset when you run out of space and keep cloning. The alternative was to give each single box a collider, which works, but makes your cpu run 100%, haha.

I appreciate the happy response! :)

Boop's Space Adventure by winnie33 2018-08-13T10:58:58Z

@alexey-akulovich Thanks for taking the time to record the issue! It's definitely something that should be looked at were I ever to make this a real game. Thanks to Gouyte in this thread however I got a pretty solid idea of how to fix it.

Thanks again for your engagement! :)

Boop's Space Adventure by winnie33 2018-08-13T13:05:17Z

@anstabo Thanks for appreciating my sound slider! Most people don't notice it but it actually took me longer than drawing all the sprites and programming the mechanics _combined_. I'm very glad at least someone wanted to change the music volume =)

Boop's Space Adventure by winnie33 2018-08-14T14:33:09Z

@fireslash Thanks a lot for the comment! I agree a full-fetched physics engine isn't needed here, but 2 days isn't enough time for me to develop my own, let alone the rest of the game :)

AABB sounds very interesting, never heard of that. WIll definitely do some more research into that!

Thanks for the feedback!

Boop's Space Adventure by winnie33 2018-08-14T19:40:04Z

@uvwar Haha, that is kinda the idea! Don't run out of space or you'll need to restart! ;)

Glad you enjoyed playing~

Boop's Space Adventure by winnie33 2018-08-15T07:22:34Z

@pkenney Wow, thanks a lot for the in-depth response! Don't worry about me being unhappy with such critique - I'm pleased someone took the time to write that all out for _my_ game! :)

I'll try to respond to each one, however I'm not too sure you can do anything with this information.

1) The clone line problem

This problem I understand, but to be honest I've never been bothered by it myself, nor have others I know. It is kinda hard for the game to know when you want to draw a line and when to place only a single one. Right now you places 10 clones/second which might be a bit overkill though.

2) The clone delay problem

Yes. I 100% understand this. It is ugly and inefficient, and to be honest I had no idea how to fix it at the time. If I made the clone appear instant you'd never be able to move while placing clones since you'd be stuck in the very first one. But now the solution is pretty clear: make the clone solid as soon as you have left the copy. This solves a _lot_ of problems, and I find it a shame I hadn't thought of it earlier :)

3) The Clone’s Not-Blocking-Stuff Warmup Moment

I fully understand this too, had a lot of problems with it myself as well. But, this pretty much comes down to problem 2 and its solution would also fix this problem I believe.

So thank you very much for the feedback! It is something I'd almost forgotten by not playing my game for a few days, but something that certainly should be fixed. I'll go and play your game now, it is the least I can do to return the favor :)

Boop's Space Adventure by winnie33 2018-08-15T18:30:51Z

@pkenney almost didn't see you left another reply! (Why don't I even get a notification when people comment on my own game...). Reading through this all sounds very interesting.

As you can imagine I've never worked with unity layers before, but it doesn't sound _too_ hard (future me might laugh at my innocence). However, while I understand all of what you wrote, I'm not sure if that is what kind of game I want. If a newly placed clone already protects you the frame you place it, then the risks decrease significantly. You don't need to time the danger blobs right, you can just start walking and if it starts getting close you simply place a clone. Or if the lasers will turn on any moment, all you have to do is place a clone, drop down for 1 frame and you are already safe. I get why this could be handy sometimes but it isn't really something I'd like to have (that is, if I even continue working on this game. I'll definitely look into layers though  )

For problem numbero uno, I've already watched friends and while it _did_ happen, it was never bothersome. Other than the one spot you showed in your image there aren't many of these dangerous zones where you can block off the way completely with 2 misplaced clones. Your picture is a bit of drastic though, I've never seen someone place that many clones in a single jump (Perhaps you are clumsy, who knows ^^). But more realistically, perhaps it has something to do with the fact it is being played in browser? It's yet another layer of input delay I'd think, and I've never seen someone play the entire game in the webgl version. Anyhow, a new button seems a bit overkill to me, especially as the layer-solution would fix this (you could walk "out" of the bottom clone in most cases).

Thanks for your continued support, I really appreciate it! Never thought my rushed game would get this much response :)

LD42 Running out of Space by Gary Beebe 2018-08-13T04:02:58Z

Very fun concept, but I feel like there could be some small improvements.

For example, the initial size of the field is very large, but it felt like the AI barely moved out of your screen. If the Ai chased you or flew around it would've made movement a bit more interesting. Also, when there was only 1 enemy left, it seemed like he didn't move until I did?

While music is kinda missing, what I think is even more important is the _sound effects_. Hearing a short bleep every time you shoot, while the low sound of engines plays when moving forward, and perhaps additional sound effects for when you hit an enemy or _get_ hit would make the game so much more interesting.

At the start menu, I'm not sure why I had to pick my ship with enter. If the "main" button is going to be Z, why not make that the default selection? (Of course, even better if both enter and Z work, but it feels weird to use enter for only this purpose).

And lastly, autofire would also be really great to have. It gets kinda tiring spamming the shoot button :)

---

Now, there are also definitely some good things!

I love how the ships are little 3D models, it shows the work you put into them. Very interesting and fun compared to only pixel art in my opinion!

Also, the upgrade system was definitely on point. It felt like most of the classic space shooters I know and that is a great thing!

---

So, while definitely one of the better games I've played thus far, there are still some important (and easy?) things to implement which would make the game even better.

Space Runner by Guilhermoni 2018-08-13T04:19:58Z

Great graphics and idea, but a shame the controls are so confusing. Also, I went in a straight line for about 2 minutes and nothing happened. Then the instant I stopped moving 20 meteorites spawned right next to me and I died. Not too sure what's up with that.

Anyway, great concept! :)

Please No Home by Emanuele 2018-08-13T06:28:53Z

@emanuele When I launch the .exe I get this screen, no keypress seems to fix it. Perhaps something went wrong when making the exe? Anyway, looking forward what this game will be!

Nogame.png

Please No Home by Emanuele 2018-08-13T06:58:59Z

@ethan-nachreiner Thanks, that worked!

Please No Home by Emanuele 2018-08-13T07:01:31Z

Fun concept and audio, but the amount of salary men gets kinda ridiculous after a while, haha. It becomes hard to see yourself very quickly.

Fun little game I'd say!

Oh no! This is monsters! by Alexey Akulovich 2018-08-13T11:07:54Z

Whoa, great game! The music fits well and the enemies are fun and balanced!

One thing I don't understand though, is your choice to make the big monsters (demons?) disappear when their portal is destroyed. It makes it easy to run in a circle and shoot the portal instead of him. With this strategy I managed to destroy 30 portals using the starter gun (didn't know how to switch weapons yet).

Also, and this is perhaps me, but right now it feels the real danger is from the monsters and not from the shrinking space. After a minute of fighting you have such a large field you forget there are boundaries. Of course, this depends on what feeling you want to achieve, but I thought I'd mention it nonetheless.

Overall really great game and I enjoyed playing it!

Crowded by Simone Cicchetti 2018-08-13T06:13:16Z

Very nice game, excellent usage of music. Nice addition that the music changes the further you go as well.

One thing I don't really like is how blocks can spawn _right next to you_ (not green ones), killing you instantly. I had this a lot at the start of the game but after I survived to ~20 points it didn't seem to happen again.

The AI is nice, concept creative, very fun game overall!

Ninja Bear by Hunter Towe 2018-08-16T12:56:13Z

Nice game, glad there were checkpoints haha! I love how the main character is a ninja bear for no reason in particular :).

A small issue I had though, is the part with the moving flamethrower. The flame particles didn't appear for me, so I kept dying over and over because I didn't know when it was firing. This was on the web version. Also, the non-moving flamethrowers had some weird hitboxes as well but others already mentioned that.

So, good idea and execution of the concept, I like it!

Manoeuvre kings by Sentmoraap 2018-08-13T17:53:05Z

Simple but very fun game, feels decently worked out. The sounds for moving and hitting a wall sound great :)

Escape the Junk by LoOoNeliEst 2018-08-14T22:29:38Z

Just here to say that I played your game because of the cute little robot :).

Great game, if it was a bit longer it would be even better!

Terraforming Cookie Tower by Erendelous 2018-08-13T07:41:13Z

No idea if I'm missing something, but this game is really hard. 10% of the time I'll get past level one, but after that it's near impossible to get to level 3. The concept and upgrades all seem really fun but it's no use if the floor is gone after 3 seconds.

The idea with cookies is fun though, and I like the upgrades as well. If I actually had the time to buy them this game would be 10 times better :)

So, great game but sadly too hardcore for me.

Terraforming Cookie Tower by Erendelous 2018-08-13T07:51:45Z

@erendelous Ah, I just noticed on your gif! You don't _need_ to collect all the cookies on every floor (that was what I was doing). I got confused by the text next to the screen saying "... eating all :cookie: on the way". It goes a lot better now :)

Rigid Flame by Teo Miklethun 2018-08-13T03:50:11Z

Very fun little game! Like others already said, the music and movement is very fun. However, I find your decision to make the rocket trail disappear after a while a bit strange. It's not that hard to only go a short bit forward when you are about to be hit, making the space you have never too full. But that's just my opinion of course. So, great game!
