Awesome first entry! Great work! You should definitely keep it up :)
Game won't run on Mac
Oh wow, great comments from everyone! Thanks so much @datahaven, I agree wholeheartedly on your constructive criticism. These points are definitely items I want to fix in the future (beyond LD#23).
I really appreciate all the great feedback! Thanks!
More awesome feedback! You guys are great! @aaronsnoswell, I might get in touch with you at some point ;) Maybe once I recover from my sleep debt!
I posted about the feedback I have gotten so far: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/2012/04/23/super-freaking-amazing-feedback/
Thanks again everyone! Keep it coming!
Its fun just to get a run up and keep pressing forward, to continue to spin around in orbit :) I spent a lot of time doing that while I was building it. :)
@omaha: One of the more fun things to do is to shoot them out of the sky before they land - This means they don't even get a chance to start mining the planet away.
@Jan Willem: The jumping and character movement is weird, I know. :( I know why its caused now, but I couldnt fix it before the game submission deadline. Maybe I can fix it for a future release ;)
Yeah, its unfortunate I could not get a build going for Linux. I have only listed builds for Windows and OSX, as those are the platforms I had available to build for.
Thanks for the feedback Hume! I didn't even consider configurability of controls within the 48 hours. Apologies for that. :(
Game won't start, just crashes on startup (Mac)
The link has been fixed! Too much traffic to my server, apologies for the outage!
Loving the comments so far, Ludum Dare is always a source of great constructive criticism and feedback.
Glad you are all loving the game style, and I understand the bomb site is hard to find.. That was definitely intentional.
The lighting issues are weird. I spent maybe 4 hours on trying to fix that with no result. When you face a particular direction the light doesnt work on the ground at all. its really frustrating, and its the case for the white orb patrols too.
The orbs have a really stupid error in the code for detecting the player. No doubt I will continue to fix this on the coming weekend, and push an update on my personal website. The bomb also has some bugs, including infinite bombs being supported.. (yes, go ahead, try it.. its a bit of fun!).
Again, thanks so much for all the awesome feedback! I'm trying to review as many games as I can, so I can offer some great feedback back to you all!
:-( Poor control choice.
Hard to figure out whats going on, the sounds don't feel normalised. Good effort though, and a good take on the theme.
Good work with the theme in terms of gameplay, graphics are a bit hard on the eyes, but a decent game overall. Nice work!
Totally addictive. This hits the perfect mark between a frustrating and challenging yet highly rewarding game.
Nice job!
Awesome!
Linux version had issues, but Windows worked fine. Nice work!
Nice work! The lighting is excellent. Ran into a problem with stacking, but overall looks good!
3 frustrating comments.. While I did go for a bit of a frustration angle, in order to make finding the finish more rewarding, I hope that the concept and gameplay is not too frustrating! Hopefully you can play through the levels and complete it.
There are 15 levels. Feel free to post you completed time here too! Thanks for the feedback so far!
GertJohnny at 6:38?? Wow! Nice work!
Thanks for all the great comments guys and gals! Its been great to get some good (and bad) feedback on this one.
While its a simple game, I did push the frustration factor up a bit to make the game challenging, while providing some reward for completion. Maybe I could reduce the frustration somewhat by adjusting the controls. The sliding movement of the player seems to be the greatest cause for this.
This was my first attempt at doing levels integrated with the learning of the system. I find this approach both eases the player into the game, as well as keeps them moving, instead of getting bored with it too quickly.
Thanks again for trying it out!
@jedt1201 You're right on, some sort of score would be brilliant. I actually have 5 levels, but only 1 published, as it takes a while to ensure that levels are actually "beatable". If I publish more levels, some sort of score would be ideal.
I was thinking it would be cool to track multiple metrics:
- Fastest time completed
- Longest flight time
- Top Speed
- ... anything else.
Thanks for the great comment! :)
The "flagged as malicious" is strange. You'll have to take my word on it that its clean / safe.
Yes, the game is incomplete, but represents much of the game that I wanted to finish. 48 hours is too short :( Maybe I should have done a jam entry instead.
I hope you enjoy what is there though, please be kind with your ratings!
Just stop making games.
Linux only :(
Nice game, a little too easy though.
Wont run on 64bit machine
Not working, crashed.
Not sure what to do here. Decent work though.
Doesn't seem to be working, Crashing.
This was awesome!
doesnt work. blank screen.
Doesn't seem to be working.
.NET failure here
Everyone wants sounds! I did attempt this, but it was tricky to get it right with overlapping channels and problems with the amount of audio sources in the level.
Some sounds would make this better, absolutely.
@TerinHD - I think this has happened before, they're certainly prepared with all that firepower!
@OccamsRazor - I'm glad you like the highscores board. That was a last-hour addon :)
Only 2 tweets loaded.
Game doesn't work
The graphics on this are great. You've done an awesome job!
This is great. You got the control scheme done really well in my opinion. Excellent work :)
Art looks great, but couldn't get the game to load in the browser. Maybe the assets are too big?
Looks interesting, but also couldn't get it to start.
@KevKevOnFire - Appropriate username ;) Yeah - There is a probability of catching fire to adjacent tiles, which is higher when there is something like a house, trees, hay bales etc on that tile. So just being adjacent isn't enough sometimes. This leads to more strategic placement of dynamite and other flammables.
Mini Update.
I've thrown this onto Steam Greenlight, and i've done some post-Ludum Dare polishing to get it closer to complete.
I'd appreciate anyone's support if you can vote YES on Steam Greenlight!

Brainfuck, now this takes be back... Nice :)
@jackyjjc @star-sought @dries-vuylsteke @d-fect-inc Nailed it! I want to add multiplayer for some fun local couch play. Controllers and shared screen multiplayer co-op could make this really fun.
@dries-vuylsteke I've placed it on GameJolt, you can follow it there: https://gamejolt.com/games/ld42/360670
@awix Music should be improved? Can you explain?
Awesome feedback @cnb @connorthompson and @lndrstrll - Thanks!
@icxon You did *amazingly* well on level3! Whoa! Nice playthrough video!
Very fun. Nice work :)
Very difficult, good fun. Loved the artwork!
This is frustrating, confusing and enjoyable. Great work :)
Plenty of great gameplay wiht simple graphics. I love the lead-in, story, and the way you've owned using simple graphics to make a decent game! Awesome work!
Interesting. I've not seen one like this before. Good work!
Tricky to understand at first, but after a couple of plays, really got into it. Excellent for a jam game!
A little confusing, is there some interaction other than continuing? Feels more like a story.
Link is broken, can you update?
Game looks great, excellent work!
I can see where you put in a lot of effort to get the look / style worked out. Great work, excellent game!
Super fun! I love a good innovative space game :)
Some issues when replaying, fits the theme, nice work!
My kinda game! Well executed. I even love the programmer art :P
Difficult due to the square shape, interesting super meatboy feel to it. Great work!
Overall really good, I could escape the shelf to the neighbouring shelf, and not be considered "dead", or end of game. Super interesting with the different powerups!
This is awesome. Simple and great graphics, challenging/puzzling gameplay, and plenty of levels for a 48 hour jam. Excellent!
Far too easy, need to increase the difficulty, or make the range of weapons limited. Good work.
Takes me back to my days of teaching operating system theory to students at university. If only this game existed back then! Awesome work!
Great concept, and good execution. Great work for a jam game, but missing some features. Still quite impressive! Keen to see what you come up with next time
Good job, simple playthrough but loved your idea and execution
Strange, and interesting. Good work :)
Interesting game, I didnt see any win condition. Not sure how it fits the theme
This is great, its a puzzler that I enjoy, and it was doable, but challenging. Excellent work.
The graphics are great too, those bars at the start/end of the level, and the buttons are great. Nice work!
Whoa. I'm coming back to play this some more later. Awesome work!
Great work :) Hard to play in such a small screen (webgl).
Awesome to see a Rust game in the mix! Nice work :)
The audio was super loud, had to play with sound off. Its very fun to try and avoid all the bad dudes and the bullets! Great work, and great game!
Great concept, well executed. Needs some mechanics tweaking, but definitely fun to play. Awesome work!
Super cool, good use of theme.
Easy to learn, hard to master. The perfect game approach!
Way too dark, need to be able to see where I am going and what I am doing, even when in camo / ninja mode.
I loved the camera placement, and the game overall. Excellent work!
There were no instructions. Neat simple game.
Amazing! Loves the take on running out of space being the memory of the character, and that requiring tape changes. Very cute game!
This is exactly the type of addicting frustrating game that I like to play, reminds me of Celeste.
Great implementation, easy to play. Not really sure if interacting made a difference :)
There was also some audio bug at the end that caused some problems.
Nice work!
Very good atmosphere, looks great, but the controls are a little strange. Really enjoyed the artwork, I can see you put in a lot of effort there.
Very cute game, and definitely ran out of space. Good work!
Easy to learn, hard to master. Perfect combo!
Great theme adaptation, and a fun game in the end. Like a couple of others this JAM< I ended up playing for a little longer than I thought I would. Engaging and awesome!
Can just hold space and float down to get an inifite high score? Or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks everyone for the awesome feedback already! I hope you enjoy playing the Deep Descent!
* Thoastbot - I added a reset button. You can press R on keyboard, or X on Xbox controller to reset the level, I hope this helps! * liammasters - I tried my hand at some music, but really struggled to create something that wouldn't be ANNOYING! hehe * Hestrateja - The keyboard controls are very twitchy, and its a challenge for sure. Making them easier to control had a couple of effects: The game became too easy, it was super easy to get scores in the thousands. Also, it meant that rotation speeds were too slow, so you couldn't quickly react to situations when you needed to. I highly recommend using an XBox controller, it works in the web version and the downloaded versions, and gives MUCH great control. * Hestrateja - I love the leaderboard, and it was only added as a last minute thing. I think this really helps drive competition and a sense of accomplishment * mlkvr - I think having the high score visible somewhere could be really useful! Unfortunately I don't think I have time to do this, with the end of the compo so close, and I'm at work at the moment :frowning:
Very tricky and frustrating! Love it! Awesome work.
Interesting take on the theme, good job.
Nice and simple game, had to triple read the instructions to understand what was going on. Well done!
Level design is on point. Would have been great with some eerie music and sound effects!
Pretty awesome feeling game, on point with the lighting/depth effect, crafting and gathering was natural. Awesome work!
Wasn't sure what to do at first, but accidentally pressed space and figured it out. Good work!
I owned this game. I made it my bitch!
Joking, It was challenging, and has a kind of Rubix feel to it in terms of remembering where keys and locks are. As someone mentioned in my Stream Chat while I was playing: THIS IS EXTRA JUICY. You don't see many games with this level of detail and fun, made in a weekend.
SUPER AMAZING GAME!!!
This is like a modern QWOP with JUST enough frustration to keep you going. Its tricky to learn the right tactics, but you can quickly understand how to operate the mysterious mustache man to get to the teddy bear!
I really REALLY enjoyed this. Music was also amazing! Awesome work!!
Absolutely amazing voice acting!! Well done
The lighting is great. There was a couple of missing walls where I could fall out of the map, but if I avoided them, it was great!
Very interesting game! I don't think I've seen anything like this before. I also should not be responsible for peoples happy sleeps..
Great work! In the time you had, it mush have been tricky to get many puzzle types in there. But you managed to get the game loop done, and randomise the puzzles well. Good stuff!
Well done on the visuals. A little too dark in some places, but overall was fine. I made it to the end with a fluke shot!
Fits the theme nicely, but couldn't see that there was any consequence for hitting fish, or any way to judge success/failure. Good job on the game
As an older guy with eyesight issues this was literally painful. I understand the "magic eye" approach, but trying to focus on this was genuinely painful for my eyes. Please consider accessibility in the future! Good work on the music though.
I had some trouble seeing the game. Playing fullscreen isn't an option, and the default resolution for windowed was super tiny. The game was interesting in terms of the character selection and abilities, though I'm pretty crap, and seemed to die with one shot! I would like to have seen some visual / text indication of what character was selected. Otherwise a pretty interesting and moody game!
Great game, the time constraint was perfect. The balance between time and greed got me in the end. Also preventing the player from zooming too fast through the mine by placing explosives was a brilliant game mechanic!
Tricky to understand what to do, at first, but after some trying, it started to make sense. The link to the N-back article actually helped. Nice work!
I don't understand what is going on in this game. Some better instructions for the user would be really helpful. Maybe you can add some more instructions to the description?
Great job. The slower speed of movement side to side means you need to choose carefully when changing directions.
Been a while since I played a text adventure, was an interesting environment! Good job!
This was SUPER fun to play, amazing work. It keeps you on your toes with regard to light placement and connections, well balanced with cost and strategy. Amazing!
I love tetris, but this took me a little time and guidance to get an understanding of what was going on. Great addition to a traditional game! Well done!
Really fun to play! It was made a little too easy with infinite movement/thrust ability, I feel that could have been restricted and a pickup used to recharge. Had a blast playing, well done!
Game is working for me now. This is great fun, I absolutely love space games. This is reminiscent of my submission for an earlier Ludum Dare (#28) http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-28/?action=preview&uid=5709 so I absolutely love it :deer:
Pretty interesting, I liked that there were effects, like the slowdown. And things like the water falling.
I love a good text adventure game. But I think maybe you should have opted out of the graphics category.
The completion-ist in me wanted to keep the generator going and push my limits to keep it on even though demons were spawning. The mix of generator mechanic, spawning demons and the drawings kept me busy. Very fun! SUPER AMAZING concept!
Good fun little strategy. I love that you got checkpoints working, otherwise I would have been raging quite a bit!
Nice work on the artwork. Bit of a short game, but an interesting concept.
This is like lemmings, but ... they drink, and are terrible at working, so it speak directly to me.
Great job on the concept, fits the theme perfectly. Has enough strategy in terms of how/where to dig and planning return and such, that it keeps it interesting.
Some bugs, but don't let that discourage you!
Amazing work!
Great concept, well done!
Very nicely done, tricky to learn but managed to make a little money. Good job!
Interesting game, I couldn't understand the beds in space part, but I had a little fun in the water!
Took some strategy to look at how the enemies were moving and what patterns that involved. Good job on the various movement types. The only difficult part was the visibility of location after transporting through the glasses. The grey was hard to see. Good job!
Took a little while to understand what was going on. Kinda feels like a spin on flappy bird with some level changing. Good work
Very innovative idea. I imagine getting the switch between walking and diving was tricky, and you did it well. Good job!
Unique game, I love the weightless style movement/controls
Great job. The low quality graphics made it a bit hard to judge perspective and understand where I was going, but I got the hang of it after a few tries
