LD42 — Running out of space

Paradise Inc by Criobite 2018-09-02T08:04:47Z

Really nice game. The graphics reminded me of Flashback or Another World, very cool and set the mood well. The music was nice, I liked the change of mood when you get to Paradise. The story was a bit short and predictable - I get that there wasn't enough time to make a longer story, but since you don't get to make any decisions, it's a bit unsatisfying. I'd love to see this fleshed out a bit more - perhaps some explanation of why Paradise isn't what they hoped for. Also, I didn't really notice the people in the background in reality on my first play, so it felt like there were more people in Paradise - maybe there should be more people in the apartment building at the start to really push the "running out of space" theme. Overall, great job!

Reasonable Claustrophobia by SkullPixel 2018-08-14T22:26:15Z

Wow, I love this game! Your graphics and animation are awesome, and the sound effects and music are great too. The gameplay is fast and smooth and compulsive. I managed to beat the game and I really enjoyed using the walls to take out the bad guys. Superb!

Demonologist by Ghen 2018-08-13T10:12:33Z

Fun game! The temperature mechanic has potential. I never saw the fire totem, so some way of showing which way to go to get there in time would help. The guide was too long. Reminded me a bit of llamatron.

Reverse by Goutye 2018-08-14T22:10:49Z

Slick puzzle game with a simple, innovative concept. Really liked it, even though I am not very good at it. Well done!

Delivery Boi by JCMonkey 2018-08-14T09:43:00Z

Excellent game! Graphics are fun, sound effects are awesome. I thought I was doing ok, but then I ran out of space, so maybe you could make it more obvious that space is about to run out by flashing/enlarging the capacity meter or something - to give the player a sense of urgency. But that's just polish. Loved it

Iris by Galan 2018-08-13T20:19:07Z

Wow, this is a hard game - I can't even get past the second wave. Nice graphics and sound, smooth gameplay, and it fits the theme. Makes me want to keep trying!

Another Summer Run by Tragon 2018-08-13T14:04:15Z

Nice work! I made it to the coast without any trouble, so it might be a bit easy. I didn't understand that you score more points if you're closer to the edge, so maybe some way of showing that would help, like bonus points notifications or something. I definitely got the feel of the theme, and the graphics are pretty cute.

Brightly-Wrapped Boxes by incobalt 2018-08-15T14:29:49Z

Nice literal interpretation of the theme. I liked the idea of the game, placing presents and then opening them is quite jolly compared to a lot of violent and intense offerings out there. Speaking of intensity, I didn't really get a sense of urgency about picking up waiting boxes, so when I ran out of time, it was a bit of a surprise. Perhaps some kind of nagging would help? I found the movement was fine, and I agree that zooming out the camera might be useful, although I didn't really have any trouble placing boxes. Nice job!

ROOS? by Genpaku 2018-08-13T14:11:27Z

Good game! Graphics are simple but effective. It could do with some guidance to start with, but it's pretty obvious how to play once the blocks start falling.

Borderblast by C0nst4ntin 2018-08-15T14:45:48Z

I couldn't get the game to run on macos :( I executed the Jar file, but all I get is a blank window.

Borderblast by C0nst4ntin 2018-08-15T15:48:35Z

Yeah, I did. I've tried both launching the `Borderblast - Game.jar` directly, and extracting it and running `java -classpath . com.constantin.ludumdare.Game` (I moved the `res` folder into the extracted jar too). But all I get is a window with "Borderblast - Constantin Ross" as the title, but nothing in it. When I run in the terminal, I get the same blank window, and the output `Laoding image: /backgrounds/menu.gif...`

Space Cadet by bobismijnnaam 2018-08-30T20:20:21Z

I enjoyed the oddness, didn't mind the motion blur. I played for a while, got spacebars from various places, and offered them to the buddha, but then the game seemed to crash. Overall, pretty good!

Setting Soul by Omniorcus 2018-08-13T19:01:43Z

The atmosphere is very creepy, especially with the music and the evil laughter. I couldn't figure out where to go after the second arrow, though.

Slime Escape by Dom Harris 2018-08-14T10:08:33Z

Great game! Sound effects are just right (although I also had the click/chirp at the end of the jump sound when I played, but nm) and the music fits well, even if it is a slightly short loop. The graphics are really nice and the controls are smooth. I'm terrible at platform games, so I can't do a speedrun, but I had fun playing. Top work!

Rainforest by SimoGecko 2018-08-14T22:38:50Z

Beautiful graphics, and a fun game. I also didn't realise how to know which boxes went where at first - maybe colour coding would be more obvious than the number labels and the box size. But that's just a quibble. Great work!

The Big Crunch: Cosmic Horizon by Daniel Alhadeff 2018-08-14T09:49:19Z

Great game! The music is really good and the game is easy to get to grips with and compulsive. I had trouble with the asteroids kind of hugging the walls and it was difficult to get them away again, so maybe the physics need a tweak? Also, I didn't really notice the walls closing in, but the visual effect is cool.

Running out of Keys by OadT 2018-08-13T11:48:42Z

Great puzzle game! Once you get it (I took a couple of tries to figure out how to play), it is quite easy, so maybe adding a timer would help. Would play again!

Bitter Litter by Jole 2018-08-13T14:42:22Z

Lovely graphics and music! The beep sound effect is a bit jarring, though. The feel of the controls is so nice, drifting around the planet  It crashed for me on Mac - I was just clicking at random and the whole app shut down - but it was fun while it lasted.

Spaceabon by Agecaf 2018-08-13T16:45:50Z

Fun puzzler! I found the game very easy to get into and very soothing in puzzle mode - especially with the great music just keeping me sliding those blocks around and tidying up! Very zen. :expressionless:

Pizza Defender by Sloyd 2018-08-27T08:05:58Z

Aaah, I love this! The graphics are excellent and cute as heck! It's particularly interesting to me, as your game is similar in concept to my own, but you've done a much better job. I wish you'd had time to get some sounds in, it would have made it much more atmospheric. Some suggestions for post-jam features:

* Broccolis and tomatoes seem to chew up the same amount of pizza, so I made sure to shoot broccoli first, as they take fewer shots to kill. Maybe make tomatoes take bigger bites, or introduce some more ingredients with different eating patterns. * ~~Make the bad guys come in waves - maybe you can have victory condition if you beat all the waves without dying or losing all the pizza~~ - oh, you already thought of this :) * Score based on number of bad guys killed or amount of pizza left * Different weapons - maybe you could have a flame thrower that would cook bad guys into the pizza and rebuild it

Anyway, fantastic game - I'd love to see you keep working on it!

Pre Alpha Build by PlusMinus 2018-08-15T15:02:05Z

I like it! Tetris meets tower defence - would have been a good entry for LD41 too :) The UI was a little confusing, I didn't immediately understand what the numbers meant - perhaps a short tutorial round before sending in the hordes of enemies? But maybe I'm just slow. The music and graphics are cool, nice work!

Beaver Pitch by Andy D 2018-08-11T16:26:56Z

It's not done yet - I hit publish by mistake!

Beaver Pitch by Andy D 2018-08-13T16:07:41Z

@team-on @falk-bruskeland @j0ye @ilseroth @jackou @frank-gevaerts @hakro thanks so much for your feedback!

I'm pleased just to have submitted something that you can actually play.

Barnaby was actually not able to swim originally, and could only walk on the logs - this was really the core of the "running out of space" idea. But the AI tries to avoid Barnaby in preference to stealing a log, so the game would end up with Barnaby sitting on the last one or two logs, surrounded by beavers that couldn't go near him!

I let Barnaby swim so that I could test the Game Over screen, and then forgot to turn that off before I submitted :disappointed:

Beaver Pitch by Andy D 2018-08-14T09:57:31Z

@teo989 @ever thanks for the feedback! I definitely want the beavers to come in bigger waves - it's on my list!

@agecaf thanks for your detailed comments! Good advice. I did intend to follow a schedule, but I didn't stick to it. I was aiming to have the basic gameplay done by the end of the first day, and then focus on art, audio and polish on the second day, but watching my timelapse video (which I'll be publishing soon) shows me I wasted quite a lot of time just looking at what other people were doing on the LDJam feed!

I think next time, I'll be more strict with myself and use the Pomodoro technique or something.

Beaver Pitch by Andy D 2018-08-15T12:56:06Z

@quorusa @c0nst4ntin @treizive @awix thanks for your comments!

@incobalt yeah, I can reproduce this bug. I got down to about 20 logs and then the beavers start bringing logs with them to steal? I'll try to squash this as soon as I can.

@edgelord sorry you couldn't run the game. I've tested the Mac download and it works fine for me, so I don't know what I can do to help. I'm pretty sure all the dependencies are bundled with the game, although this is the first time I've used this framework, so I could be wrong. Are you running macOs 10.14 (Mojave)? Because Apple removed support for OpenGL, and that could be the problem.

Beaver Pitch by Andy D 2018-08-15T15:51:28Z

@arche-san thanks for the suggestions! I thought about having a score based on the number of beavers you bopped, and I like the dash idea - I'll try to get it into a follow up release soon.

Beaver Pitch by Andy D 2018-08-16T09:25:28Z

@jegus9 @paulhocker @wildcard thanks for the feedback. I am a massive Lisp fanboy, and my main goal was to get at least something reasonably complete done using Lisp.

@jegus9 you're absolutely correct, the difficulty doesn't scale at all - the beavers just keep coming every few seconds. If I get a chance, I will tweak the settings to have them appear more frequently, and take less time over stealing logs.

@paulhocker that was exactly what I was going to do - Barnaby could only walk on the logs - but I discovered a bug with the AI that meant the game could never finish: when he was standing on the last log, the AI wouldn't go near him to steal it! I turned off the movement clipping and then ran out of time to fix the problem.

@wildcard thanks for the ideas - I love the game over flood idea! That's going on my todo list!

Beaver Pitch by Andy D 2018-08-16T13:08:35Z

@edgelord this seems to be a bug in the version of lisp I used to compile the game. There's a more recent version with a fix, so I should be able to fix this soon.

Beaver Pitch by Andy D 2018-08-19T10:59:40Z

@lastleaf sorry about that - I don't have a Windows machine to test on. I'll try to figure out what the problem is. Thanks for trying!

Beaver Pitch by Andy D 2018-09-03T11:32:52Z

@predominant @rahim-pxr @erikkire thanks for the comments!

@erikkire - sorry about that. Which OS did you play on?

float and stuff by wildcard 2018-08-14T09:39:04Z

I liked it! I was surprised at the level restarting once I'd made it impossible to win - in other games like this, you just get stuck and have to manually restart or wait for the timer to run down, so  for that feature.

Noah's Help! by Ian Kettlewell 2018-08-14T21:50:40Z

Great game! Super cute animal graphics and a fun puzzle. I liked the sound effects. I managed to complete the game (yay!) but that last level was pretty tough. A couple of animals shapes were difficult to see - perhaps the squares that would be filled could be highlighted when you drag the animal over them?

Crowdy Planet by arche-san 2018-08-15T16:14:49Z

Really lovely game! The graphics and sfx are cute and the music fits perfectly. I found it difficult to see which crowdys were sick once you zoom out to the second stage, so they kept dying off in planetwide plagues :( which is a great challenge! I kept accidentally killing crowdys i wanted to clone and vice versa - but I'm playing on a macbook with a trackpad with no right-mouse-button, which isn't really the right tool for the job - maybe keyboard + mouse controls? Great work!

backSpace-X by omercanbalandi 2018-08-13T11:41:02Z

Nice work! I found it a bit boring (sorry) and the collision detection seems off, because I got hit by things that were not touching me. I liked the sound effects and music.

Running Out of Space by Danny Sun 2018-08-13T20:12:49Z

I liked it! I couldn't seem to replenish the jump meter fast enough, so I didn't make it very far. The sound effects are great and the music is pretty good too.

Dash Brawler by glitchman 2018-08-13T14:50:56Z

Love it! The AI is pretty easy to beat, but it is still satisfying to do it! Love the graphics style, the sound effects are perfect and the intro is cool too.

DON'T RUN OUT OF SPACE by Paden Shorey 2018-08-13T14:23:45Z

Awesome! I love the graphics style, you stuck close to the theme, the sound effects are great and it's fun too!

Rumble Trouble by alexkarate 2018-08-13T14:34:49Z

I liked it! Simple but solid puzzle mechanics. I found the music a bit aggravating, but  for doing it. I found it a bit too easy to press the wrong key and walk off the edge, which I suppose it the point, but I think the challenge should be more about not painting yourself into a corner than fat fingers - so maybe prevent the player walking off the path?

Getting Some Space by Qazikol 2018-08-13T16:20:33Z

I think it's really beautiful. It's very soothing and I really love the traffic sounds. Great to see this kind of entry!

SpaceRunner by jackou 2018-08-15T07:33:51Z

Great game! Left me wanting more. I like the feel of the floaty jumps and the jetpack mechanic works well. I think the collision detection could be tweaked a bit - I was killed by spikes when jumping near them even when I didn't touch them, so I assume the hit boxes are a bit bigger than the sprites. Nice work!

POP! Save Person McPersonFace by SixBeeps 2018-08-13T17:26:08Z

The intro was so calm, and then the game was intense! The music and the countdown timer really put the pressure on! The controls are confusing, but it kind of adds to the challenge.

Petra by cassowary 2018-08-13T13:15:29Z

Great puzzler! I only managed to solve the impossible level by accident after getting stuck, but I worked out most of the levels eventually. Love the simple colourful graphics and the simple smooth gameplay.

Running out of S.P.A.C.E. by Frank Gevaerts 2018-08-15T07:54:44Z

Tricky and funny! I felt pretty smart putting the space in the telescope, but then I got stuck outside the hyperspace gym, because I didn't realise what happened when I got on the treadmill. Made me feel nostalgic for Zork and all those old text adventures.

Dead Zone by Melmo 2018-08-13T20:32:36Z

Nice game! Really tough, and the mouse control seems weird - I thought the ship would aim at the mouse pointer, but it seemed like moving the mouse left and right was like pressing the left and right arrow keys instead. Nice graphics and sound, and sticks close to the theme too.

Utter Space by snakemuho 2018-08-14T22:48:54Z

Really nice! I found it challenging to build up the door and then it took me a minute to figure out what to do when I had :face_palm: Great work!

Continuum by Hakro 2018-08-13T15:57:14Z

It's quite a simple game and easy to win - like others have said, it might be nice to have more keys to type (or words). The graphics, sound and music are all superb!

Closing In by Cobear25 2018-08-13T17:58:03Z

Nice game! The music and the graphics are good - although I also found it hard to see how close the walls were. I felt like it could all be a bit faster.

Floodtown by Sita 2018-08-13T12:01:44Z

I liked it! I managed to earn $12072, so probably I didn't quite get how to play properly. Perhaps a tutorial would help. The graphics were nice and I really got the theme of running out of space!

Running out of Space by tom7 2018-08-13T12:49:12Z

Really nice game! Reminded me of games like Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion. Took me a while to translate the alien characters and even longer to figure out how to get to the upper deck, but I completed the game eventually!

Stack Overflow by firefly4 2018-08-13T17:05:47Z

It's quite compulsive! I got into a rhythm and could keep the stack empty without too much trouble, so maybe it should get faster or something. The sound effects are just right and the graphics are simple but effective. Nice work!
