LD42 — Running out of space

Magic Cam by Marcel Egle 2018-08-13T17:10:28Z

Having so many major controls all on the mouse is maybe a little cramped, and I frequently found myself having to focus on not over-scrolling while navigating the menu while running from enemies, but people with better mice might not have that issue. Aside from that, I loved it; really interesting idea with a lot of strategic depth to be mined. Would definitely be interested in seeing this developed further!

Detox by FiloGC 2018-08-13T00:02:38Z

Really responsive controls, which makes it pretty compulsive. Great job!

Thoughts In My Head by haley 2018-08-13T00:55:47Z

Really individual aesthetic visually & musically that works thematically. Good job!

Poseidon's Trident by garygreen 2018-08-13T18:35:06Z

They're right about the colour scheme tbh. Great music and really fun concept! I wanna try more Bitsy stuff now...

Crumbling Dungeon by JSMCAG 2018-08-13T14:51:22Z

Really cool spin on a classic style! All the elements (music, art etc.) cohere really well.

Sea of Bells by Kultisti 2018-08-13T09:15:06Z

Definitely the most fun I've had playing an LD42 game so far. Being thrown into all sorts of situations with little explanation was truly thrilling; great job!

Climb by Albin 2018-08-13T15:12:36Z

Really cool game! The player animation looks good and melds well with player control, and the sprite switching makes those movements feel much more deliberate in navigating the smoothly moving objects.

Death Remains by DuckyDaniel 2018-08-13T00:18:51Z

As has been said above, knocking the skeletons into the holes was maybe a bit too difficult, but the flow of the rest of the game was really good. And no disrespect to the actual game, but I especially loved the menu! Great way to introduce the core concepts.

Getting Some Space by Qazikol 2018-08-13T00:21:18Z

@jackou Ahh, sorry; forgot to put that in the description! Or game... It's just the spacebar for everything!

Getting Some Space by Qazikol 2018-08-13T15:14:26Z

@cobear25 Yeahh, ahah; if I could've opted out of "Fun" then I would've, as off-putting as that may have been :')

Getting Some Space by Qazikol 2018-08-13T16:36:41Z

@rumor Ahah, yeahhh; the idea was meant to be that the impact of your actions would decrease with each new vignette to help communicate the whole "comfort in the insignificance of yourself and your actions" theme, but then even the first one allowed very little interaction, so that progression didn't really work...

SpaceRunner by jackou 2018-08-13T01:01:04Z

Love how the limited jetpack uses add a resource management spin to it!

Eject Tape by star-sought 2018-08-13T16:14:16Z

Aww yeahhhh! Really love this. The palette, the developing character animations and, of course, the developing music cohere in a way that's really evocative. The simple gameplay really foregrounds that atmosphere without being trivial, and uses the promise of further developments as a far more worthwhile incentive than just opening a locked door. Didn't expect to be so emotionally affected by an LD game, ahah.

Eject Tape by star-sought 2018-08-13T16:45:28Z

@star-sought Whah, thanks! Yours is a fair bit more polished though, ahah :') Really encouraging to see other people making games with an "artier" focus!

LD46 — Keep it alive

failsys.sh by jabdownsmash 2020-04-20T13:38:54Z

Really love the visuals; very dynamic and reactive! I'd never heard of Nima, but will definitely give it a go after seeing this.

Great work!

failsys.sh by jabdownsmash 2020-04-20T19:12:38Z

@jabdownsmash Thanks for the heads up on the Unity repo! I might well take you up on those tips!

B R U I S E S by leafthief 2020-04-21T13:37:19Z

Whahh, I think this is probably my favourite entry so far! Consistently gorgeous art throughout, wonderful touches like the tape animations, and all used skilfully in service of a really compelling story. I did struggle a bit at times, but that could just be me :')

Last Hope by Iluvatar 2020-04-21T12:09:53Z

Not got much to say that hasn't been said above, but really gorgeous (and economical) art and composition! That along with the animation and sound design was enough to give this heaps of atmosphere.

Lay Down Your Roots by NotExplosive 2020-04-21T22:51:34Z

This was really great! Simple and effective art that keeps everything both readable and pretty, especially with the subtle swaying animations. Impressive how dynamic it all is. Pleasant and encouraging audio, and a compulsive balancing act that kept me playing until the end, despite not initially planning to. Really well-designed!

Lay Down Your Roots by NotExplosive 2020-04-21T22:51:44Z

EDIT: Double-post; sorry!

Grove by doodlebrisk 2020-04-20T16:07:58Z

Nice and meditative. Good work!

SPECIAL MEAT for a special boy by LethalTurtle 2020-04-22T11:35:56Z

One of the best submissions I've played! Love the look and feel of it, which is impressively cohesive. Was unsure how the different elements worked at first, but once I understood then it was a lot of fun.

Bargaining with Supreme Beings So They Don't Destroy Us All by garygreen 2020-04-20T18:47:58Z

This was great! Really well-written, crazy-polished music and some really clever methods for creating more active puzzles in Bitsy. I'm gonna spend my £25 well.

🍄 Saki 🍄 by Darkfire92 2020-04-21T14:04:52Z

Lovely art and atmosphere! I really like the idea of switching between these different scenes with the same character in; gives it a bit of a narrative feel? I did maybe find it a bit too long, and the gameplay seemed to suddenly shift from comfortably having a full stack of wood to there being so little time between mushrooms that you could barely pick up more, without any real shades in between. The core gameplay concept worked for me though, and the quality of the art can't be overstated!

Last Fortress Left by ConnorThompson 2020-04-20T12:54:51Z

I'd agree with the above feedback about difficulty, but I really like the concept, and the UI looks very classy; lovely textures.

Grove Guardian by VivianMochi 2020-04-20T11:30:27Z

A little opaque at first, but once I understood it properly I really loved it. Calming with just the right level of mild threat to encourage strategy. Will definitely come back to this!

Keep It Alight by Lamasaurus 2020-04-20T12:40:39Z

Wonderfully hostile aesthetic. Love how you have to balance platforming and lighting mechanics later on, and an impressive feeling wall-jump for under 48 hours!

Dont Drop the Plant by Barney25052 2020-04-20T10:48:19Z

Love the flat-shaded art style! The time constraints with the plant travelling through the tube makes it instantly compulsive. Would agree with @goldenevolution that sometimes readability was a little difficult; maybe making the floor colours contrast a little more with the walls could help? Or adding a contrasting lip to higher platforms?

Cosmic Felk is Dead! Long Live Cosmic Felk! by Qazikol 2020-04-20T11:51:34Z

@freya-c Thank you!! Yeahh, I probably didn't need to change the camera rotation as well as the position, ahah.

Cosmic Felk is Dead! Long Live Cosmic Felk! by Qazikol 2020-04-20T16:29:07Z

@snory Thanks for the notes and kind words! Different choices changed what text you'd see, but that's about it; had hoped to write more, but ended up having to submit the first draft of the script :')

Cosmic Felk is Dead! Long Live Cosmic Felk! by Qazikol 2020-04-20T18:19:00Z

@murrzipan Glad you enjoyed the story! Ahah, I'd like to say the former is just a genre thing, but I think it was more a time thing. The raw chunky pixels were a style choice, but yeah, when combined with the queasy camera movements it does mean that you get edge pixels sliding back and forth woozily because of the change in rasterisation, which isn't great :')

Cosmic Felk is Dead! Long Live Cosmic Felk! by Qazikol 2020-04-20T18:23:03Z

@bereg Thank you!! I really enjoyed yours too; I can't quite express why I love bleak bureaucracy in games, but I do :') Great music too!

Cosmic Felk is Dead! Long Live Cosmic Felk! by Qazikol 2020-04-20T19:26:29Z

@jabdownsmash Thank you!! Though now that the adrenaline's gone it might take me a little while to face my own writing again, ahah. Yeahh, that's fair. The camera movement helped me feel like I'd achieved a bit more than a flat render early on, but I never ended up doing the animation, lighting and post work to replace it, so in it stayed :')

Cosmic Felk is Dead! Long Live Cosmic Felk! by Qazikol 2020-04-21T11:10:40Z

@aronms Thank you! Yeahh, I didn't leave myself time to revise the UI and make it dynamic, which in retrospect should've been a priority for a text-based game :') Just ended up fudging it for the WebGL build, but even then...

Cosmic Felk is Dead! Long Live Cosmic Felk! by Qazikol 2020-04-22T11:17:56Z

@dandala88 Thank you! I really appreciate that :)

Cosmic Felk is Dead! Long Live Cosmic Felk! by Qazikol 2020-04-23T22:34:59Z

@notexplosive Thank you!! Ahah, luckily I think it's more the text box that's feeble :') Will definitely revise if I do a more polished draft!

@jonathan-lorenz Unfortunately we'll just have to make do with our earthly gabber for the time-being :c And tbh I agree about Hunkbert; his work's gotten a bit self-indulgent of late.

@chocolat-endive Thanks! Would definitely like to flesh out the dialogue tree and add more options throughout, yeahh. Also, ideally, actually make some cosmic felk :')

@43sam Really glad you liked it! Ahah, a disproportionate amount of time was spent on the genre names; I'm glad that sleepily mumbling space words to myself paid off in some way :')

@kimkillaqueen Thank you!! I think this is my first time writing dialogue since I was like 13, and I basically never write anyway because it's ~terrifying~, so that really means a lot!

@junebug Ahah, that's quite an accolade! I finally(!) got a MIDI keyboard like 2 days before LD, and in my excitement spent far too long in the smooth jazz space on the first night, grooving into the early hours at the expense of everything else :L

@daria-toni I can't believe you're the first person to mention the floor bug! I thought that would turn loads of people off, ahah. Thank you for your kind words!

Faire L'Amour aux Plantes by Jenny Bourke 2020-04-22T11:50:09Z

I am unashamed of my lust for plants. Really wonderful all-round, especially the gorgeous music and illustration!

Light from a star by munmungames 2020-04-20T13:19:23Z

A great concept that's really well polished! Very coherent aesthetic and mood.

You Can't Die! by Nirose 2020-04-20T15:12:49Z

A rare LD entry that has both tight gameplay and great art! Really nice work.

Ozwomp Is Arriving by Melonking 2020-04-21T11:36:30Z

Awww yeee, I love me some colourful primitives! Really impressive jamming with your own engine, and loved the use of web pages. Fun distortion/filters with the gate audio, though I'm guessing I missed similar effects elsewhere? Was fully expecting some Godot shit, but Ozwomp did actually arrive, and it was worth it??? Nice work!

Blooming with You by Junebug 2020-04-22T13:49:33Z

Well-written and sweet, and the visuals really heightened all that. A really polished entry; well done!

_So_Below by kimkillaqueen 2020-04-21T23:16:12Z

I really like the fixed perspective! It's a very striking composition, and the lighting and animation help keep it lively. The simple audio really brings it together; you really got the most out of what you did!

Cryoloop by Freya C 2020-04-20T11:57:54Z

Love the old-school controls and chunky textures! Has a wonderfully fuzzy, claustrophobic feel. Having some audio to add to the tension would help further that, but yeah, 48 hours :')

The Game of our Lives by Owl_Skip 2020-04-20T15:23:00Z

Makes me really happy to see entries like this that stretch the definition of game, and from looking above it looks like I'm not the only one! Love the Eno-y Reich-y music, and those are some gorgeous particle effects.
