I love the art style for this. And I cackled at "I'm only in it for the hunks". The camera movement was nice and made the scene feel more 3d, but also felt a touch seasick-y. Long live cosmic felk.

lamasaurus 2020-04-20 11:22

This game is genius! Love the mood and wish it would have lasted longer. I really felt like a space cashier trying to spread the word of cosmic felk. Thank you for this game and please develop it further!

nirose 2020-04-20 11:34

Very interesting, and a very creative use of the theme.

qazikol 2020-04-20 11:51

@freya-c Thank you!! Yeahh, I probably didn't need to change the camera rotation as well as the position, ahah.

xeke-death 2020-04-20 12:10

Not really my type of game, but in the end I got a jam session with a fellow musician, so that's cool!

Characters looked good, the dialogue options were fun. Music was nice and ambient.

Some of the text was a little hard to read with the colours, a stroke or darker background would help with that.

Good work.

munmungames 2020-04-20 13:35

Sweet ! Good storytelling and atmosphere, I really enjoy the retro graphics and the background music. Congrats

owl-skip 2020-04-20 15:27

Awesome vibey little number this. Great music and lovely lo-fi graphics.

snory 2020-04-20 16:20

Thanks for the entry.

I had a good vibes from the game. If I would not playing ludum dare games together with my all knowing partner I would for sure finish this since it is a first time I played something like that. I am not sure if my choices had some impact. Was it just story telling or there are some alternative endings? :)

Anyway, if it would be long game I would not be able to read the text since it was a bit hard to read it.

Thank you for sharing!

qazikol 2020-04-20 16:29

@snory Thanks for the notes and kind words! Different choices changed what text you'd see, but that's about it; had hoped to write more, but ended up having to submit the first draft of the script :')

murrzipan 2020-04-20 16:53

Great game. My two complaints would be that I felt I didn't have a huge impact on the outcome(that might just be a genre thing) and it could have be anti-ailiased a bit more(it was a bit disorientating). Other than that though, I really liked the story, it really made me smile at the end.

bereg 2020-04-20 17:08

Wow! This game is great! Nice writing and fun characters! Not to mention cool music, yeah! Thank you!

qazikol 2020-04-20 18:19

@murrzipan Glad you enjoyed the story! Ahah, I'd like to say the former is just a genre thing, but I think it was more a time thing. The raw chunky pixels were a style choice, but yeah, when combined with the queasy camera movements it does mean that you get edge pixels sliding back and forth woozily because of the change in rasterisation, which isn't great :')

qazikol 2020-04-20 18:23

@bereg Thank you!! I really enjoyed yours too; I can't quite express why I love bleak bureaucracy in games, but I do :') Great music too!

jabdownsmash 2020-04-20 18:57

Hilarious use of the theme, and a lovely style. This is some writing and visual polish from being a complete piece!

I think the slow camera movement takes away from the graphics, though I understand the desire for a little extra detail. I'm sure you have plenty of ideas for how to show the 3D-ness of the scene without the shaky camera

Great use of Cradle/Twine, nice work~

qazikol 2020-04-20 19:26

@jabdownsmash Thank you!! Though now that the adrenaline's gone it might take me a little while to face my own writing again, ahah. Yeahh, that's fair. The camera movement helped me feel like I'd achieved a bit more than a flat render early on, but I never ended up doing the animation, lighting and post work to replace it, so in it stayed :')

aronms 2020-04-20 19:32

I appreciate the effort of trying to craft an interesting narrative for a Jam, as well as creating graphics and doing the sound. Unfortunately some of the text was hard to read. But overall it was cool and weird - like Cosmic Felk!

melonking 2020-04-20 21:16

I found the graphics a little painful, but the mood and story were very engaging. Its very true, and clearly comes from a place of experience. That said %spoiler% when the old guy invites you back to his place I got a bit worried..

qazikol 2020-04-21 11:10

@aronms Thank you! Yeahh, I didn't leave myself time to revise the UI and make it dynamic, which in retrospect should've been a priority for a text-based game :') Just ended up fudging it for the WebGL build, but even then...

dandala88 2020-04-22 03:58

You know, I feel like this genre is just something I missed out on in my gaming life. I definitely appreciate the intention behind it, and when in the right kind of mood I feel I could really get into it. The graphics are great, mood is great, audio is great and I love the artistic direction you took with this entry so great job!

qazikol 2020-04-22 11:17

@dandala88 Thank you! I really appreciate that :)

kriss 2020-04-22 14:44

Lovely style, great graphic!

notexplosive 2020-04-22 15:30

Very well written. The visuals were great but I wish the textbox were a little more opaque for my feeble eyes. I loved all the goofy looking characters and the made up music genres. LONG LIVE COSMIC FELK!

jonathan-lorenz 2020-04-22 16:46

Space Gabber? What ? I want to listen to it! This was a nice story driven experience with a dinstinctive mood. Good job! PS : I do prefer the last album of The Hunk Bunch's than Hunkbert's new solo project... But that's just me.

chocolat-endive 2020-04-22 17:00

Now I just want to listen to some good old Cosmic Felk. Graphics and story are fine, and the mood works well. I think it could be cool to have one or two alternative endings.

The interpretation of the theme is really great. Nice job here!

43sam 2020-04-22 19:26

This was a lovely game :) The art style is perfect, along with the designs for the characters and store. The dialogue is great as well to the point where each character felt unique and realistic. Overall it's a brilliant story and a nice experience! Also, all the made up genres sounded amazing!

kimkillaqueen 2020-04-22 20:48

Dang, this is such a good game. All the jokes land so well, all the characters (even the player character) have such distinct personalities, the art and music is fantastic, and it's the perfect length for a jam game :raised_hands:

junebug 2020-04-22 20:53

Long live Cosmic Felk! In actuality though, from the description of animal noises and people moaning in tubes I'm kind of glad we got to listen to some holo-ska instead. The pixel effect was cool, I liked how it grounded the art style more than it would have been without it. Good work

EDIT: Just realized I left the game running so I could keep listening to the music while writing this. That's how you know you did good. :P

daria-toni 2020-04-23 14:06

Yes! I love it! This is definitely my type of storytelling and old school stylization is superior, ofcourse :) There's one visual bug with the floor and game is very short (sadly...), but I love everything about it! Good job.

qazikol 2020-04-23 22:34

@notexplosive Thank you!! Ahah, luckily I think it's more the text box that's feeble :') Will definitely revise if I do a more polished draft!

@jonathan-lorenz Unfortunately we'll just have to make do with our earthly gabber for the time-being :c And tbh I agree about Hunkbert; his work's gotten a bit self-indulgent of late.

@chocolat-endive Thanks! Would definitely like to flesh out the dialogue tree and add more options throughout, yeahh. Also, ideally, actually make some cosmic felk :')

@43sam Really glad you liked it! Ahah, a disproportionate amount of time was spent on the genre names; I'm glad that sleepily mumbling space words to myself paid off in some way :')

@kimkillaqueen Thank you!! I think this is my first time writing dialogue since I was like 13, and I basically never write anyway because it's ~terrifying~, so that really means a lot!

@junebug Ahah, that's quite an accolade! I finally(!) got a MIDI keyboard like 2 days before LD, and in my excitement spent far too long in the smooth jazz space on the first night, grooving into the early hours at the expense of everything else :L

@daria-toni I can't believe you're the first person to mention the floor bug! I thought that would turn loads of people off, ahah. Thank you for your kind words!

garygreen 2020-04-25 14:01

This was so well written. I like the humour and the way you put a relatable scenario into an alien setting. The visuals were fun and worked with the narrative.
