Hey, I imagine this would be good, but the current build is broken for me. It has no menu screen? Screenshot_20200419_132259.png I do like the graphics though!

doodlebrisk 2020-04-19 19:19

Huh, weird. I'll take a look. Thank you for the feedback.

sarrixx 2020-04-20 15:47

Nice relaxing little game, very well presented. Were there any other mechanics aside from watering the plants?

steven-c 2020-04-20 16:07

It isn't clear to me how to play the game. what do I do? what are the controls?

Edit: I can't see any menu, I guess the webbuild doesn't work correctly on my pc/browser

qazikol 2020-04-20 16:07

Nice and meditative. Good work!

duck-reaction 2020-04-20 16:09

It's very cute and chill, perfect after a game jam. Music is cool but the loop is too short

doodlebrisk 2020-04-20 16:09

@steven-c In the main menu, the controls are explained when you press "info". I'll update the page to include the instructions though. Thanks for playing!

doodlebrisk 2020-04-20 16:10

@sarrixx I had some other ideas (fertilizing, misting, de-worming), but didn't get around to implementing them. Thanks for the kind review :)

laralama 2020-04-20 16:13

Relaxing little game. I loved the cute little animations. The book was a good idea.

doodlebrisk 2020-04-20 16:15

@duck-reaction Yeah, I agree about the music. It was originally just going to be the title theme, but life got in the way :P

west 2020-04-20 16:21

I really enjoyed the peacefulness of it, the music was relaxing,

maybe put the name of the plant on the pot because i only knew which were the cacti but after making a mistake once i could see which ones i had to water or had to stop watering so i guess it isn't that necessary.

good game!

doodlebrisk 2020-04-20 16:37

@west Thank you for the feedback. I was originally going to put pictures of the plant in the guide book, but getting the book to turn pages was more trouble than I wanted to deal with. I decided that not knowing, and having to experiment, would be part of the challenge.

doodlebrisk 2020-04-20 16:37

@laralama thank you :)

witdarkstar 2020-04-20 17:01

It's been fun playing all the different plant games like mine. It's really neat to see how each team/person approached it differently.

I really like the guide and how you focus on taking care of the different plants. Super cute game.

I do wish you said somewhere that space bar was how to exit looking at a plant though. I eventually figured it out.

doodlebrisk 2020-04-20 17:26

@witdarkstar Thanks for the feedback. I think I've now seen 6 games about taking care of plants. The info text says, "return to the room by pressing 'space'". It's the last line of the info text, so maybe it gets cropped out on some resolutions. Sorry about that. Cool Plants/Chill Beats is downloading now; I look forward to playing!

nick0124-creator 2020-04-20 18:01

Very peacefull and appeasing game.

matt2728 2020-04-20 18:58

A happy place game! :) I was a little confused as to why my plant was shrinking when I was watering it (I think I gave it too much water?). Also had to refer back to this page to see that spacebar gets me out of watering the plant. Other than those things, this is an awesome project. Thanks for sharing! <3 the models btw. How was the water particles done if you don't mind me asking? (the little spheres)

doodlebrisk 2020-04-20 19:15

@matt2728 Thanks for the kind review. All of the dirt starts with a default wetness of 75%, so the cactuses immediately start shrinking. That's probably something I'd change if I update it. You're the second person to mention the space bar. It's in the info menu, but it must be getting cut off. I'm glad you figured it out.

As for the water particles: I have a game object at the end of the spout of the watering can. As the mouse is being pressed, I begin spawning the spheres at that game object. I then get a normalized vector pointing from the center of the watering can to the spout object. I multiply that by a random vector along with a velocity. I then attach a rigidbody, so the drop is affected by gravity and I can give it an initial velocity, and a material so it's blue and semi-transparent. Finally, I call destroy with a half-second delay. See the code below, and feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.

``` void FixedUpdate () { count++; if (pouring && count % (50 / rate) == 0) { Vector3 dropDir = transform.position - transform.parent.position; dropDir.Normalize(); dropDir.Scale(new Vector3(Random.value * velocity, Random.value * velocity, Random.value * velocity));
GameObject drop = GameObject.CreatePrimitive(PrimitiveType.Sphere); drop.transform.SetParent(transform); drop.transform.position = transform.position; drop.transform.localScale = new Vector3(0.001f, 0.001f, 0.001f); Rigidbody dropRb = drop.AddComponent(); Vector3 dropVelocity = dropDir; dropRb.velocity = dropVelocity; dropRb.drag = dragAmount;
drop.GetComponent().material = WaterMat;
Destroy(drop, delayToDestroy); } } ```
raguel 2020-04-20 20:16
The game is indeed very relaxing. Improving lights adding some particle effects like dusts, maybe adding god rays everything combined like that would make this game great. Also adding some animals or butterflies I think is a good idea.
bredian 2020-04-20 21:28
This game delivers relaxing mood through its gameplay. Kinda what you need after 3 day jamming :). It reminded me of Myst and 7th guest games - nice touch.
lestat 2020-04-20 21:58
Interesting concept. Good job!
doodlebrisk 2020-04-20 22:18
@bredian You're the third person who's played it to mention Myst. Originally the sound I recorded for the watering can to make when pouring water sounded just like the the island with the trees and hydraulic pipes. Definitely not relaxing enough :)
immortalitybh 2020-04-20 22:36
really peaceful
ruddgasm 2020-04-20 22:59
I found this game really relaxing which was nice after the stressful weekend of creating a Jam game. The music and the graphics worked really well together and the game was easy to understand. I liked the fact that the different plants actually had to be taken care of differently, it was a nice detail. Great Job!
coleslaughter 2020-04-20 23:29
This game really nails the feel of what it's like for me to grow plants, and hopelessly watch as they all slowly die under my care in front of my eyes. :sob:
Seriously though, I played this for way longer than I was expecting to! Nursing plants back to health was super relaxing and felt rewarding. I was about to suggest having a label to differentiate plants from each other, but I actually found it kind of satisfying figuring that out through trial and error.
This is a really neat and relaxing experience, and I say you nailed the tone in spades!
caleb 2020-04-21 02:06
This is a very cute and simple experience. The sharp jumps remind me of Myst and the audio takes me back to Runescape for some reason. I wish that there was a "theraputic" rating category -- you'd get 5 stars!
I used to use an old Windows app called "Microsoft Bob". It basically had different desktops with links to apps/folders contained in a collection of cute and interactable themes. This feels like it could be one of those themes in a modern MSBob!
maxter10001 2020-04-21 03:07
A super pleasant, chill experience. That's exactly what I needed during these quarantine times. It was enjoyable to read about the different plants and taking care of them, and I really like the cute forest background.
barbaraann 2020-04-21 09:33
I love your game! I should have read your info at first, but thats my fault. Since I read it the navigation is pretty simple. I love that you can see how the plant is growing. Its really relaxing.
cninja 2020-04-21 10:03
I also have to say that this game is really relaxing and chill. I spent around 10 minutes enjoying really nice music theme while trying to keep my plants alive!
johnjoemcbob 2020-04-21 10:37
Really cute! I felt really accomplished managing to keep them alive and growing :) Great work!
tari 2020-04-21 13:13
I enjoyed the quite and relaxing atmosphere. Thats the kind of game I could really imagine having bookmarked for home office breaks!
doodlebrisk 2020-04-21 13:41
@barbaraann Several people have mentioned confusion about the controls, so that's definitely my fault. Something to make note of for next time! Thanks for playing, and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
clynamen 2020-04-21 20:49
if you want to relax it's quite nice
pusheeneiro 2020-04-21 22:02
Nice relaxing games with cute models.
antraxxx 2020-04-22 09:40
Nice relaxing game, cool graphics and music. Well done !
paologinefra 2020-04-22 12:44
Nice relaxing game. Maybe the main mechanic is a bit too simple but it's fitting for a game jam. The music and the colors are amusing.
rusty-jim 2020-04-22 12:49
A nice experience and I feel that the use of colour was excellent. I also enjoyed the slight physics on each o the water droplets. Weirdly stressful to see a plant shrivel up in front of you, though! I guess I don't have green thumbs.
OVerall though, I enjoyed my time in the Grove :)
enya454 2020-04-23 06:28
Relaxing game. The graphics are nice. I may just be unknowledgeable of plants, but perhaps images could have been used in the guide. Unless that was your intention, to make the player try and figure out which plant is which. In that case, good job. Other than that, still a really good game.
chuchugeralt 2020-04-26 12:37
Nice little game! Thanks for reminding me of my poor real-life plant watering skills!
yetanother 2020-04-29 01:29
The music is very nice! Turns out, I'm as bad as keeping plant alive virtually than in real life!
sn4pi 2020-04-29 20:40
What a fun game to play :smile: I played it for 15 minutes and still couldn't get enough. You created a chill and ambient atmosphere because of the gameplay and the music. The gameplay itself is pretty simple but after reading the manual and playing for around 2 minutes you get in a little stress situation because you put too much water on the cactus or forgot to water another plant and so they begin to shink by an enormous amount! These moments kept me on playing because I wanted to let all the plants grow big and show their strong green colour.
The only downside I can think of is that the menu could be a bit better in terms of visualization and input feedback. For one person to do this in a jam, I think that this is a good entry. Well done! :hugging:
mrstari 2020-04-30 16:05
That was a relaxing playtime for me, thanks for that! :heart: such a good idea! :slight_smile:
