LD42 — Running out of space

Withsand by TerraCottaFrog 2018-08-13T02:29:15Z

Fun arcade game. Was initially confused because I thought I was dying, but I was actually winning the levels (the animation that plays sure looks like a game-over animation to me). Gets pretty hectic. The thing that worked least well for me was that I could barely see my aiming cursor when there was lots of stuff happening on-screen, but that may be part of the point. Thanks for making a high score table so that I could see that I am the BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD (of three players :sunglasses:). I was sad that I couldn't put a number in my name, and it was also strange that I couldn't figure out how to exit the game from the main menu (had to kill it in the task manager)!

Brain's little symbiont by Local Minimum 2018-08-26T14:55:27Z

This is good. Reminded me of some ZZT stuff. Hard to predict! I only played once, but if the Bristol stool scale is my score... amazing :) For a pixely game, it would have been nice for the pixels to be exact (some are blurry for me, probably because it is being resized to something other than an integer multiple). I also found it a bit annoying that the dialog required me to dismiss it before I continued, since there was so much. The "flow" (hehe) might have been better if I could keep moving during SLORP sound effects, for example.

Deadly Delivery by Rogue Studios 2018-08-17T23:36:58Z

This is the Matrix sequel that we deserved.

Rather liked this one! It's not that hard to avoid the bullets once you understand how they work, but it's pretty fun and satsifying to deliver the packages. I got to 20 boxes before it was impossible because boxes blocked any possible path between red and blue. IMO at this point it should clear something to let you continue!

TrackBlasters by paulloz 2018-09-02T15:22:19Z

This one's lovely! Love the art, and it plays great in the browser. Some suggestions: - Would be good if the game prevented dropping bombs in a place that would make the track impassable. - Seems like I should be able to drive across a diagonal corner between two holes (if carefully)? - I'm sure you thought of this, but if I were racing against computer opponents and we were dropping bombs for each other, I think that would be quite fun!

Overall a very good entry, congrats :)

Cronus' Tomb 2 by Mr_Field 2018-08-17T02:29:30Z

Great game! I beat it, but it was a really close call: I didn't have all the clues and had to guess about the position of one of the guys. But I guessed right. :)

The thing that works least well for me is the difficulty curve... I was struggling a lot to beat any of the caves for my first 30 minutes playing or so. I think the controls felt a little slippery. Once I finally beat a cave and was able to upgrade my health, it was much easier to beat the other ones. It would have been nicer if I wasn't so fragile when I started. (I know the caves on the edges are supposed to be easier.)

Some bugs or other problems: - ESC just quits the game without prompting, which can be pretty rough if you're in Cronus's tomb or trying to exit the shop and don't understand what button you're supposed to press! (I shouldn't complain -- my game does this too. :)) - If you hit the skeleton with a sword and shield a second time while he's in the air, he just turns white and invulnerable forever! - There are a couple of places where falling into spikes is just death even if you have a lot of health, which seemed sorta mean. - It takes like 10 seconds to start up on my computer?

Anyway, this was solid all around. Thanks for making it!

Detox by FiloGC 2018-08-13T03:25:23Z

This is the best one I've played today. Very solid arcade concept, and I love the Gameboy vibe. Once you get your combo high enough, you can just wave the mouse back and forth really fast at the top of the screen, and this usually keeps everything from getting near your bottle while you still rack up points. Maybe if the multiplier slowly decayed if balls are rejected?

Legacy by gil4 2018-08-19T16:56:36Z

This game is great. I like the mood it creates, and the platforming worked nicely with some good tricky stuff. My biggest frustration was that took so much damage in a few difficult spots that I lost all my items, despite collecting almost everything (28/30 items, 14/15 bags!). In particular, the part where you go up some air columns like this:

``` ########## # # --> #^ ##### #^ # # ^# # ^# #^ # #^ ###### # <- | # ###### # # #XXXX# ```
just seemed so random to me to get enough vertical speed, and I kept falling into the spikes. I lost my remaining few items on the very last puzzle. Generally, the brambles are too easy to touch. It would help if they were more distinguished from background, if there was more feedback when I touched them, and if the hitbox was shrunk a bit. I did like the idea that you needed to play perfectly to get everything, and the sense of permanent loss from hitting one of these.
Some bugs: - Towards the end of the game it was showing me descriptions that clearly didn't match the item's drawing. - There's a part where you have to use your warp bubble similar to the last puzzle to get two items that are right next to one another (one was a newspaper clipping for me; not sure if this is random). If you warp while the bubble is right on top of both of these, then you collect both in the same frame and the second dialog box never goes away. I had to reset.
Again, an overall really good game. :)
EVOLUTION by Noa Calice 2018-08-26T19:54:35Z
As desired, I turned the planet into a burning hellscape! Excellent graphics, which reminded me of Binding of Isaac. I liked the idea, though I kinda wish there was more of a challenge or puzzle to it. It was pretty easy to see where it was going as soon as the planet started to look a little sick. :)
One weird thing for me was that although I was able to select a resolution a the start, no matter how big I made my browser, the canvas didn't actually fit in its containers, and I had scrollbars that would only let me see 95% of the game or so.
6 K by pataya 2018-08-17T23:25:37Z
Good game! Responsive controls, and it was fun to manage the repair and shooting at the same time. I found it a bit easy to shoot the waves of enemies because they were so predictable and bunched up in lines, so I didn't have much use for the shockwave (plus it destroys so much floor!). The death animation is very satisfying. My high score was just shy of 90,000.
Jumpless by ChicoMCastro 2018-08-17T02:43:48Z
Great interpretation of the theme! I think I won (I got to the level with 100 jumps?), and I had a fun time. :) Cute graphics!
CLAMPRESSOR File Archiver by Deaymon 2018-08-17T22:56:46Z
Intro and end are very cute. High marks for humor and mood. The game itself is perfectly fun, although as far as I could tell there's no constraints on moving things around, so it's really just a matter of finding three icons that are near one another, fixing them into a horizontal line, and compressing. That was reasonably fun, although there's a little bit of a delay in the movement so I couldn't max out my typing speed. Eventually it seemed like it was just too fast to keep up with, not because I was unable to think fast enough, but because the animation when moving or compressing took too much time.
The other thing that I found confusing was that your clamp head is on the left side of the clamp (with the bar extending to the right), but you need to compress when selecting the middle of a group of three. It would have been more natural for me if it was the three icons underneath my character.
2940 compression points!
Running out of Platforms by Fork0 2018-08-18T03:30:24Z
I got 1040 points! I didn't see much reason to move around, because it's easiest to shoot a comet if it's coming right at me anyway. That's too bad because it was fun to move around and I like the idea of my play surface being eroded (sort of like an inverse Space Invaders).
LETTERBOX by Shell Pirate 2018-08-18T19:44:13Z
This was superb, maybe my favorite LD #42 that I've played so far. Several creative ideas, good controls, and good assets, especially that dapper pupper. Minor issues: - The black bars at the side don't cover the very bottom of the screen for me. This might have started after a screen-shaking death? - The game should probably actually be called "pillarbox" ;) - I beat it (at least I think--the game just exits?) but found the last level to be pretty frustrating. I think that the controls (while very good) are just not quite tight enough to justify some of the really narrow windows you have to get through, and it's exacerbated by the fact that different timing means that the walls will be in slightly different places, so it's hard to practice to get precise enough. - The music loops are good but could maybe be twice as long given how many times I have to try a level to beat it? :) But again: excellent entry.
Cryptovirus by Corqi 2018-08-18T03:04:11Z
I beat all the puzzles! Most of them are very easy because they're overconstrained... there's a lot of information from the fact that you can only visit a tile once. The last one did take me a few tries. The most frustrating thing about this game is lack of undo, since it's easy to make a misstep and have to start over, and it's kind of slow going since a lot of the levels have long corridors you have to walk down. The "virus" theme was funny to me :)
Void by LatchGameDev 2018-08-17T02:38:29Z
Pretty fun. I got 13 crystals. It might be possible to get a few more but it seems like you're really limited by how fast you can move and by how much of the border of the safe zone gets destroyed! You could imagine ways of keeping the game going longer -- like maybe you could detonate the crystals to recreate some ground near your ship. On my first playthrough I died unexpectedly... I didn't know I was supposed to rocket away on my own! :)
Seems like the controls could have been simpler: Why do I have to press space to pick up a crystal? Wouldn't I always want to pick it up if my hands are empty?
I liked the music especially. :)
Void by LatchGameDev 2018-08-17T22:59:11Z
@tigerj I think that was my second try. First try I didn't realize it was going to destroy my ship and I needed to take off! :)
Pre Alpha Build by PlusMinus 2018-08-18T03:13:28Z
Wow, I must be really bad at this because even after several attempts, I can't even afford the laboratory. I need to keep spending all my money to build guns just to stay alive! It's a fun game though with good graphics and music. Reminds me a bit of Rampart for NES.
Falling Ecosystem by sprvrn 2018-08-18T03:24:22Z
I like the idea and graphics, but I can't figure out how to get more hearts! I just wanna build a building! T_T
BulletJam by C.Even 2018-08-18T15:24:00Z
This is very good. Each time I thought it was getting repetitive, something new was introduced. For the first part of the game, the jam on the walls is a nice novelty but it doesn't really do that much and there's not much strategy to how you place it, but on the boss, it has a nice way of balancing against the standard bullet hell strategy of staying far away from the boss and only making small movements. Neat! I didn't even notice that there were bombs, which might have helped me win it... the boss was just a bit too hard for me without it. Nice graphics; I particularly like the detail of how the player is pointing to shoot jam. :)
Carter's Crates by Diego Escalante 2018-08-17T22:42:14Z
This is great! I thought it was a pretty creative action-puzzle game which created a number of interesting situations. The biggest drawback for me are the controls, which seem unnecessarily difficult. When I'm holding a block and facing a stack of height 1, I should be able to just put my block on top of there without jumping. And putting a block on a stack of height 2 takes very precise timing. The positioning required to do various actions could probably be tightened up, too. The other thing is that the stacks can get pretty high pretty quickly. I would have liked if there were more opportunities for dealing with it (I spent a lot of the games having "given up" on one of the colors). For example, dropping a combo of 3 could destroy the lowest layer of boxes, perhaps.
I still had a lot of fun with this. Good job! My high score was 87.
Will Survive by foxserranu 2018-08-20T22:52:07Z
Wow, that's one fast-burning fire! I liked the graphics, music, and mood. The intro was very good. There's not that much variety to tide me over for six hours, but I guess that's probably what it's actually like in the woods. With more stuff going on, I could see this being a lot of fun! Some bugs: - Stumps can show through trees. An easy way to fix this would be to draw everything sorted by (y + height), which would be the base of the tree, feet of the player, or bottom of the stump. - The timer briefly shows e.g. 01:60 before flipping to 2:00.
Temple Trap - The Game! by Jasper Hansen 2018-08-13T02:56:17Z
This is an interesting idea. It's not clear to me that a small play area is actually worse (gotta go so far to find those bats) but of course when it gets very small it's very deadly. Character animation is very nice. Several nods to Spelunky, I think. :) Some frustrations for me: - I wish it were easier to see the walls! At first I thought that was just a different texture of floor. - I usually died from accidentally standing just slightly on spikes, and not realizing that I was continually taking damage. Generally it's a bit hard to tell where the hitbox for the player and enemies is.
Parking Ships by chekaaa 2018-08-13T02:42:06Z
Other unity web games are working for me this evening, but this one just gets stuck on the loading screen (with the progress having made no progress). :/
Parking Ships by chekaaa 2018-08-13T03:15:20Z
Latest Chrome on Windows 7 (64-bit). It's working now, though, so may have been a network problem on itch.io?
This was a fun little game. It's very hard at the beginning especially. I started making progress but unfortunately I ran into a bug where I lost the ability to click on ships. I think this happens if you click a ship while you're actively driving a different one. - I was confused on the main menu because it says "press ESPACE" to start. I thought it was talking about the ESCAPE key but it was talking about the SPACE key, hehe - It's hard to tell which direction is "forward" for a ship, but I guess that's part of the fun. :)
Colony by thechubbypanda 2018-08-18T03:44:51Z
Cute game with a successful delivered space mood! I found the platforming a bit frustrating... I think the controls could be improved a little (jump seems a bit too vertical), and the scroll window zipping back and forth if I turn around makes me kinda queasy when I am repositioning myself for a jump (should have some hysteresis). I never quite figured out why I needed to collect the plants... I got only 2/3 of them on the last level but I still won! Due to the natives I named my planet "Caturn" :)
Interstellar Stupidity by Jono953 2018-08-17T03:02:57Z
Overally nice entry. The CGA graphics are lovely! I like the music, too. I had fun with the space shooting, although it's pretty hard to tell what's going on with the holographic floor stages (I don't really understand why/where the floor disappears and why there might be some large circle behind there?)... maybe not having the batteries shoot towards the center like bullets would have made this less confusing. It did seem appropriate for the kind of throwback you're going for, though! Second, I played for 20+ levels and got 58,000 points, but it didn't seem like the game was getting much harder, and it seemed like I could just go on forever? My wrist was starting to hurt so I just called it quits of my own accord. I think a little more difficulty ramp would have helped (but it's hard with this kind of game because it can just become unfair).
Cup Space by itsjustjord 2018-08-13T02:41:10Z
At first I was trying to be careful, but the best strategy is just to spam space as fast as you can, especially at the sides where you can sometimes get the cups to bunch up and then spring out enough to clog up the space between the table and the trees. I got over 80 cups this way, although it also slows down quite a bit. :) Had a good chuckle with this one. I like that in the end, it wasn't that I was Running out of Space, but actually benefitting from filling it up.
Summer's Lease by WrenPirate 2018-08-17T22:28:03Z
I liked this. I brought veggie burgers and I was a hero, but also suspected that the game was making fun of me a little, which is fine. :) Pretty well written and presented. Top marks for "mood," although the twist was a little bit jarring?
Party Simulator by KotoriYousan 2018-08-13T02:44:33Z
I like this art, but I couldn't figure out how to do anything... I just get (...) speech bubble and then they eventually close in on me. Tried keyboard, mouse, gamepad...?
Crystal Guardian by Goncalo Marques 2018-08-18T22:20:04Z
Nice! I'm impressed with making that much 3d content in a weekend. Audio is good too. I don't really understand why I died (maybe I should have read the instructions :)) but I planted a bunch of crystals and got 53 kills.
Ludum Delivery by Korso 2018-08-13T03:07:33Z
Good concept, excellent graphics. I had fun, although I wish the game got harder as I progressed... There are a few traps you can find yourself in, but most of the time you can just send a truck and get it back before you even need to worry about a piece reaching the end of the conveyor. I got to 832 points with 6 perfect trucks, but ran into some bug: I had a square piece in my hand that I couldn't fit in either truck, so I sent a truck and it came back, but then the piece was gone and I couldn't click to pick up any pieces on the belt nor anything else. (?) I was feeling about done anyway. :) Good game!
Running out of Space by tom7 2018-08-13T03:38:13Z
Mild hints: It may take a little patience to figure out the interface (having some familiarity with genre conventions will help a lot), but you souldn't need to do any 'translation' of the alphabet.
If you're impatient (which is fine :)) you can open up the console in your browser, which acts as universal translator. Control-shift-i in Chrome.
Running out of Space by tom7 2018-08-13T16:48:07Z
Good job @andy-d ! (And @ixio even if you peeked under the hood :))
Running out of Space by tom7 2018-08-17T23:02:51Z
@adhesion Yes, the pea pod thing was just there for me to test the path planning in the presence of cycles (and annoying to walk around specifically because the path planning doesn't deal with cycles well, ha), but I was running out of time on Sunday so I didn't get a chance to make it look like anything useful, or clean it up (among many many other things I wanted to clean up!). Similar answer for everything else you mention, naturally! Thanks for sticking with it even in frustrating parts. :)
Running out of Space by tom7 2018-08-18T13:30:15Z
@fork0 Nobody speaks the language except the alien. :) I added some rot13 hints in the game comments in case people get stuck and want to see how it progresses. (But the true hero perseveres.)
Running out of Space by tom7 2018-08-19T16:28:37Z
@wolfrug Oh wow, I love that story! I was exactly going for that feeling of finding an "alien" game and being able to play through it anyway.
Regarding the SPOILERS:
Yes, I think you got everything: Third verb is "OVIPOSIT" (actually misspelled OVOPOSIT), which means that. It's deliberately separate to be mysterious, since part of the joke is that aliens might consider this a fundamental action in their worldview. The second verb is "TALK" but it barely has any effect. Keycard is unused. There were a few things in the plan that I had to cut because I ran out of time, which is the reason for some of the loose ends. Thanks and thanks for playing! :)
Lab by Kristov 2018-08-13T02:13:38Z
I like the claustrophobic atmosphere. I won a few times on different difficulty levels, and it's not an unfair game, but for me it's mostly about whether I guessed the right direction to start.
Super Overachiever 42000 Deluxe by suve 2018-08-17T03:26:15Z
I love this concept! I definitely wanted to fill up my whole screen with achievements, but I "only" got 72 before I called it quits on level 3. - For a platformer like this I think it's important that the controls are really tight and feel fast. In this game I'm really floaty, both because I can't do any "low" jumps (by just tapping) and because I spend too much time in the air. With the single-hit deaths, it became sorta frustrating. Checkpoints would have made it ok, too, but tight controls are the best! - I get that there's only 48 hours in the weekend, but it would have been nice if there was a more creative assortment of achievements! Most everything is just do some game event X times. Having them come with a little explanation would help make that more fun. Overall, I had fun playing this!
Æmoeba Æscape by ixchow 2018-08-14T02:44:35Z
Solid puzzle game! It ended a little sooner than I thought it would, but was still satisfying. Somehow reminded me of DROD.
California Jane by fivenamefivesocks 2018-09-27T03:19:32Z
Good game! The art and overall feel are really great, although there is some scaling that distracts from the crispness of the pixel art (i.e., the pixels end up not actually being square, or changing shape). I found the controls a bit frustrating, because I'd like to be able to press right 3 times and move 3 squares right, but if I don't time them correctly it ends up doing more or fewer movements than I'd desire. Other than that, I had fun... pretty impressive for a weekend!
