Took me an hour to get one clue, gg. Genuinely good game though.

This game is pretty fun. I love the whole rogue-like setup, going back and forth between the dungeons and the town to upgrade your character and find clues. It reminds me a bit of The Consuming Shadow by Yahtzee Croshaw, if you've ever played that game. The cute pixel art was great and the music added to the tone of the game. The platforming felt nice and responsive, but the combat could be a bit frustrating at times. I like a game with a good challenge, but most of the difficulty in this game stems from the player character's short change combined with their fast movement speed, leading me to accidentally run straight into enemies. Also, either I'm missing something or these dungeons are really long, cause I never found a single clue no matter how far I went. Despite these flaws, this is a really great game that I had a fun time playing. Nice work!

funny game man, i like it

@superpokeunicorn

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

The Consuming Shadow was a bit of an accidental inspiration with the whole ritual deal, although I didn't really have the time or experience to make the random dungeon aspect work as well as I would've liked.

The length of the dungeons is based on how close they are to the edge of the map, since you'd have less time to try and compelte those. Some of the closer ones might end up a bit too long for their own good as a result though, something that'd definitely need tweaking if there's ever a post jam version.

I appreciate the detailed comment, thanks very much! :)

I didn't understand the link with the theme. A bit hard and I didn't know I could use a sword the first try. It's a classic but it works.

Really good game, pretty hard, though I may keep it aside to keep playing it sometime. The whole aestetic is really nice and I can see that there was lots of efforts put into the game. I would just like if the escape key didn't close the game immediately. Each time I wanted to close a menu I ended up closing the game x)

Really cool entry overall that needs more ratings!

it was a lot of fun! very hard, we didn't manage to find any clues. the visuals and audio were great! it felt very punishing to revive at 1hp, since visiting the town makes the fog advance.

it's very easy to accidentally quit by hitting escape, unfortunately

great work overall!

Simple and beautiful

Great game! I beat it, but it was a really close call: I didn't have all the clues and had to guess about the position of one of the guys. But I guessed right. :)

The thing that works least well for me is the difficulty curve... I was struggling a lot to beat any of the caves for my first 30 minutes playing or so. I think the controls felt a little slippery. Once I finally beat a cave and was able to upgrade my health, it was much easier to beat the other ones. It would have been nicer if I wasn't so fragile when I started. (I know the caves on the edges are supposed to be easier.)

Some bugs or other problems: - ESC just quits the game without prompting, which can be pretty rough if you're in Cronus's tomb or trying to exit the shop and don't understand what button you're supposed to press! (I shouldn't complain -- my game does this too. :)) - If you hit the skeleton with a sword and shield a second time while he's in the air, he just turns white and invulnerable forever! - There are a couple of places where falling into spikes is just death even if you have a lot of health, which seemed sorta mean. - It takes like 10 seconds to start up on my computer?

Anyway, this was solid all around. Thanks for making it!

@tom7

It's so good to hear that someone had beat it!

I definitely agree with you on the difficulty curve, it was definitely a concern I had, but due to a lack of time and experience with creating randomly generated games, the dungeons don't really have any kind of difficulty scale to them and ended up as bit of a mess of rooms of random difficulty. Something I'll definitely keep in mind if there's ever a post jam version.

Thanks for detailing the issues, the start-up problem is an interesting one.

I'm glad you enjoyed the game. ;)

I managed to beat a few dungeons/caves but not Cronus tomb. I am very impressed with how much content you managed to create in 72 hours.

The graphics are really good and so is the music and sounds. My biggest gripe with the game is the feeling of the movement. To me it feels to... heavy/floaty but that might just be me being bad :P

A very solid entry!

Ill definately come back to this one. Its really difficult. I wish there were a way to block. Great job tho!

m-dam 2018-08-17 17:20

Wow I'm very impressed with the amount of polish and content you were able to achieve with this entry. I also like how you implemented the theme idea with the entire adventure map and levels shrinking progressively.

Whenever I play a new game from the jam I'm always very skeptical at first because I don't know how good the game is going to be but with this one that feeling gave way to enthusiasm about the game world very quickly. I wanted to explore the map and unlock the upgrades in the shop. After many tries however, I was starting to get frustrated with the movement controls and enemy behaviour and lost interest.

Definitly the best game i played during the jam so far. You guys did an awesome job, this game has the mood, the best lookin graphics, fitting music and sounds (awesome chiptune). And i dont know why, but the shop was a highlight for me, the buildings, the clouds in the background etc. The artstyle is ridiculously great, cant wait to see more of you guys. Wish i could create graphics as good as yours. Just do your thing, i guess this game deserves a first place ;)

thefunattic 2018-08-18 09:57

This is really impressive on several points, not only the sheer scope of this adventure, but also the variety and quality of its content ! It really feels like a RPG, but reduced to a minimalistic and perfect pulp - one minute bits of everything the player expects from a game like this. Graphics and sound design suit this very well, simple but very efficient. The "clue" mechanic is cleverly designed - it calls for a ton of implicit choices, despite (again) the scarcity of information. This one mechanic is the link between everything else in the game, which I find makes the whole a beautiful piece of game design.

This is one of the few games that I can't really point out weak points in - it does perfectly what it wants to do. I could only wish for it to expand further :)

Ho damn, why is this game so brutal? I'm totally in love with the art style, graphics and music. I also like this concept of simple quest where you have to grind a bit to level up. Made me think about Half Minute Hero.

I'm a bit sad that the game is so hard, because I only manage to get to the first dongeon, die after getting a few gold coins, go to the shop to heal, rince and repeat :(

However, you manage to hook me, I will try it again later. So Really awesome first impression, but then a bit disapointed by the brutal difficulty of the game. Good work!
