Eye pleasing game, couple things you could have done differently in my opinion, there is no delay to register inputs, so it's not a super slick. Put the help bigger because i couldn't read it. I didn't realise that you could actually repair the "hole" in the ground after much longer, maybe put the price in grey on the text ? It was an enjoyable game nontheless ^^

connell 2018-08-14 00:16

@anstabo thanks for the feed back we did realize all of those things its just that crunch time was coming and we needed to get the game done fast

edmanbosch 2018-08-14 00:24

This game's really good, although I find the music's tone to be a bit unfitting (not the title screen's music though, that one's fine, great even).

connell 2018-08-14 00:25

@edmanbosch Ok, I half agree on that

samueldeboni 2018-08-14 00:41

The game is good, and the graphics are great. But the moviment speed could be faster

connell 2018-08-14 00:42

@samueldeboni noted

ryupold 2018-08-14 01:01

A great small game. I like the sound effects. Got really thrilled at the end when the ground cells crushed away at a fast rate.

connell 2018-08-14 01:03

@ryupold Thanks! Glad you noticed it gets harder over time. Thanks for playing also remember that commenting your highscore gives you a chance to get featured on the game page

jeremy-ryan 2018-08-14 01:06

Solid submission. Like other's have said, the movement could be smoother, but it looks, sounds, and plays really nice for a game made in a weekend. I think I ended up glitching it out though, because my second playthrough I just started out with about 60k money.

larryseinfeld 2018-08-14 01:06

Really cool game! I love the art, I love the music and sounds, the concept was cool and addictive. Only wish was the player movement was a little quicker and smoother, but other than that really neat game!

hifructose 2018-08-14 01:10

Great game! Art is nice. The music and sfx add a very cool feeling. Only complaint is the movement feels kinda clunky. Very good submission otherwise!

trozen 2018-08-14 01:12

The clean art style is really wonderful. I found it hard to figure out which tiles were best repaired.

radow 2018-08-14 01:14

First game I play this Jam that really fullfilled the theme. The looks are really clean and I like that the turn based nature makes it a pressuring game without actually putting time pressure on you. The only thing that felt a bit confusing were the many currencies. and their position on the screen (I played at full screen and there were numbers in all corners, miles from the actuall gameplay).

taner 2018-08-14 01:14

Good Game. Love the idea with the limited space which is breaking down and you have to save it. But the movement could be smoother.

hive-mind 2018-08-14 01:16

Very intelligent and innovative game design. I found myself falling into endless pits a lot more than I thought I would, but that's on me and my bad fingers. Truly awesome work here! Loved it!

triplefox 2018-08-14 01:18

This is an interesting game. It shows technical prowess but the design needs more of a direction to it for everything to come together. My strategy for this game relies a lot on being lucky. I didn't notice any info on when tiles will fall, so I'm playing assuming it's random. Elements like the different items to collect and the teleport function work as abstract mechanics, but they don't have any grounding in the game's scenario.

I suggest looking at both my own devlogs for this past compo and my [chaos](http://ludamix.com/dive/chaos/) article. They might give you ideas of where this design could go.

gary-beebe 2018-08-14 01:20

How does it repair the tiles without any hands :P Good game tho.

spoopsmcgee 2018-08-14 01:23

I really enjoyed it! The sound when I fell through the first time scared me but it was great. I think the music in the level makes me feel more dread rather than a rushing feeling so not sure if that's what you were going for. I like the snap the player has to the items that you can pick up but I wish it snapped a little faster during movement as well. Overall it was really fun to play great job

dingodize 2018-08-14 01:24

The input delay makes it a little tedious to control but still a great idea. The art is really cute and the music I found it to be really relaxing. Great submission.

kevin-prehn 2018-08-14 01:41

It was a little awkward to play with all controls on my left hand, but it had solid gameplay and looked great.

plepletier 2018-08-14 01:44

Great Entry! The art is great and the sound combine with it! Congratulations! The movement of the char stuck some times but don't ruin the game!

..I create new links to my game, know you can download without problem \o/ https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/sweet-squire-o-mine

connell 2018-08-14 02:13

@jeremy-ryan that is not a glitch when you get all 6 emeralds you get a new island and keep your score

jeremy-ryan 2018-08-14 02:22

Ahhh! Thought I just lost and somehow score wasn't reset. That makes more sense!

thecommonthug 2018-08-14 02:56

But... my score :( I played for like I dunno 10 minutes and then at the end of a level it just went to the home screen. What was my final score!?! So, yea, I liked it cause when it forced me to stop playing after 10 minutes I was pretty disappointed lol.

Yes, the movement was a bit chunky and the animation jumps sometimes, but my biggest hang up was not having an ever more crumbling tile instead of black boxes and the actual item instead of white boxes. Although... game jam, so I'm sure you know that and just didn't have time.

Very. Well. Done.

cary-stanley 2018-08-14 03:01

I really like the graphic style and the game. It seems like you can get more money as the game progresses, by then you have a lot of holes to repair. I wish I could have one more repairs earlier. I got all 6 gems and though I had "beat" the game. I see from comments above that you can actually keep playing, I guess that could be made more clear. Great submission!!

ashment 2018-08-14 03:06

Neat little game, though it was hard to understand at first. The text prompts are rather hard to read. Good job though!

gus-the-shark 2018-08-14 04:41

Nice game, the oldschool graphics are very pleasant. The music is very moody I dig it. The controls seem a little weird at first, both 'e' and 'r' are very close to 'wasd', but I could get used to it. I like the concept I wish there were more levels. Nice work!

krasse 2018-08-14 07:10

Wow, the music and graphics really set the mood of this game. Visually it got a bit crowdy after a while, but a really good entry!

connell 2018-08-14 13:37

@thecommonthug sorry about that you just found a bug I think

shell-pirate 2018-08-14 14:28

I quite liked the graphics because of the color palette you chose, my only issue is the fact the main character looks a little flat. The music is great and it really helped the mood. Gameplay-wise it's a neat idea that kept me tense throughout while keeping everything that's happening under my control because of the turn-based mechanics. I'm split on the randomness, as on one hand it helps with the tension by not letting the player know which crumbling block will fall next, but on the other hand it feels a little frustrating at times. Overall, a solid entry!

connell 2018-08-14 14:38

@shell-pirate thanks for the feed back!

derek-volker 2018-08-14 16:47

Nice entry with well done interpretation of the theme.

The graphics, sound and soundtrack are awesome. Love how simple yet effective the graphics are, with a nostalgic feel on them. The soundtrack complements the feeling of the graphics as well.

I found the controls to stuck a little when im trying to move, but it dont really mess with the game experience.

Good job!

dankar 2018-08-14 16:50

Nice game! I good graphics and sound.

xarras 2018-08-14 16:52

Hey that was great! simple and solid, audio and graphics adding to atmosphere. Just as constructive feedback, I would make the croubling even more often, or less turns since the tile turns grey until it falls, that would allow you to keep track of every tile.

roman-petrov 2018-08-14 18:35

Very addictive game! The only problem for me were the controls. I would expect that I can click faster or hold the button to move across several cells. It took me some time to get used to the movement pace and not lose the time.

I will be happy if you also review and rate our game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/no-space-in-my-stomach

connell 2018-08-14 20:01

@derek-volker @roman-petrov It is a turn based game that is how the controls are supposed to work

roman-petrov 2018-08-14 20:07

@connell Oh, I didn't realize that :) I thought it's realtime :)

connell 2018-08-14 20:08

@roman-petrov it's all good

derek-volker 2018-08-14 20:16

@connell omg, same here, i didnt noticed it was turnbased!

recursor 2018-08-14 20:39

The graphics and sound are all nicely polished. My only issue was with the controls but I'm sure you alreadyknow about that.

connell 2018-08-14 20:49

@recursor ITS A TURN BASED GAME THE CONTROLS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE THAT WAY. (sorry for the all caps you don't know how many times I had to say this)

dunin 2018-08-14 22:10

why are there fish?!

Anyway, simple game, but strategic enough to be interesting...

joloujed 2018-08-14 22:45

Nice game, loved the art style, the only minimum problem i have was the volume of the sound effects, I found it a bit loud. I god scared a couple of times haha. But nice game overall.

connell 2018-08-14 23:07

@dunin there is a rare easter egg. Gotta get lucky though

brickkid512 2018-08-15 00:58

Well Done! I hope you expand on this further. :)

gamebuilder 2018-08-15 01:15

It felt good to gather resources, but at the same time in the back of my mind there was a lurking worry about the crumbling. That created an interesting tension.

I especially liked the music in this game, it really added a lot to the mood.

hunter-towe 2018-08-15 01:25

I really like the graphics-- I've always been big on simplistic pixel art, and in my opinion it was well done.

The retro-sounding music is something I really like, and the sound effects are pretty good, too.

This game, as an idea, fits the theme very well. Not only that, but you can actually feel it in the gameplay, too, so good job on that!

I like the gameplay, it's fun and it's challenging enough that you feel accomplished for beating a level. For a lot of games, high scores don't really work and they feel forced; however, this game does the score in a way that makes it feel important, and I like that!

Overall, I think this is a really good game!

starhacker 2018-08-15 01:55

Neat short game. Graphics and core gameplay are solid and polished. The only thing that made it odd was the need to repress keys to move to the next tile, it would have been nice if held down keys simply continued movement. A small detail would be some notification to the player that the tile is about to be destroyed. Overall I think the game has great potential and would like see further development.

connell 2018-08-15 02:04

@starhacker since it is a turn based game you should be stopping and thinking after each move. Also thanks for the comment!

starhacker 2018-08-15 02:39

@connell I didnt even notice it was a turn based game! Thanks for the clarification. On my first run I was rushing because I thought the ground would break if I didnt patch things quickly. Thats what I get for not reading!

icxon 2018-08-15 03:19

Level generation and music are great. I wonder how the gameplay could have changed by making it realtime. But since it's a turn-based and puzzle-like -- I see no problem to show the gems location when it's available to collect. In this case player will be able to decide whether move directly for the gem or get more score/coins by collecting non-gem tiles with a risk to run out of space.

And I noted sometimes the hero slides really fast (you can see it on the video). It was fun to play, thank you!

Here is my playtest:

https://youtu.be/Hlr2wYA2tdA

pnghasemi 2018-08-15 03:32

Cool. music and mood were exciting. but I really liked if I could move faster. like not stopping at every tile to be able to move to another tile. Also, I really didn't understand the use of fish, diamond and other stuff on the screen... maybe if repairing tiles could cost us some of our silver or gold, it would make it more interesting to play.

anstabo 2018-08-15 13:21

I didn't realise we have the same game name x)

connell 2018-08-15 14:53

@anstabo Lol!

connell 2018-08-15 14:53

@pnghasemi there is a rare easter egg that involves fish, also the it's a turn based game that is how movement is supposed to work

paulloz 2018-08-15 15:32

I LOVED your game, it's so nice. It feels like I could play hours. I don't have much to say, you nailed what I like :ok_hand:

connell 2018-08-15 15:40

@my-sweet-whomp thanks!

hare-software 2018-08-15 18:19

Easy to get into, good graphics and fun gameplay. Well done and congratulations!

sarah 2018-08-15 18:38

Really cute game, it took me a little while to figure it out :P But once I did, it's a fun game. It really scared me the first time I fell through a crumbling piece, I kept risking it by walking across them haha :P

seconddimension 2018-08-15 18:56

I liked the Hitchhikers guide reference! Nice colour palette and music, and good fit with the theme. I actually liked that it was turn-based, that pretty worked well. I guess it would have been ice to see how many moves before each tile fell, then it would have really made the player think about where to go and what to prioritise. My best was 59000 I think, pretty bad from me!

kokonaught 2018-08-15 19:27

Nice game, it's simple yet enjoyable. I'm not sure if the concept can be expanded but it simply works for a short game. The graphics are pleasing and everything is understandable. The music and sound fx are nice (though I couldn't help but hear "My Band" from D12 when I heard the title screen music >< ) Great job!

flower 2018-08-15 19:42

Very good graphics!)

mike-inprinciple 2018-08-15 23:44

I didn't enjoy the controls in this game. When moving to a next tile, the controls get ignored, inconsistently. So I died quite a few times, because I had expected that the game would buffer my button presses. In simple terms, I pressed Right, Right, Up, yet the game thought I had pressed Right, Up, skipping the middle input, which sometimes led me to my death.

Secondly, I don't understand the purpose of doing any of the things you can do in this game. For instance, you can accumulate money and then spend it to fix the broken tiles. Just so you can accumulate money, and fix the same broken tiles again.

Lastly, I think RNG damages the experience substantially. On some runs I had half the level broken and no money, on some other I was more wealthy and I could easily manage the broken tiles instead.

connell 2018-08-16 00:11

@mike-inprinciple That's unfortunate

alexey-tarabrin 2018-08-16 03:46

So cute graphics))

adhesion 2018-08-16 03:47

Cool concept & good use of the theme! Gameplay seems fairly random though, especially in terms of the level layout and point values for pickups - there were a few runs where I got trapped really early on without enough points to repair anything. As others have said the controls felt a bit unresponsive at times as well. Still there's some cool potential for strategy with planning out which tiles to repair. Nice graphics and music too. Nice work!

ganonwarrior 2018-08-16 04:07

Nice graphics and music ! The mechanics are very good too ,maybe if the character was a little faster it would still be better , anyway , Good job guys !

pranjalbisht 2018-08-16 05:42

This is a pretty good entry and I enjoyed it overall. The only gripe I have is that the RNG felt a bit too prominent- sometimes I would get trapped super early and sometimes the resources would just not appear even after a lot of turns. Maybe you could have a no-fail check for that in place to reduce leaving it up to randomness.

gentoogames 2018-08-16 05:55

I was unable to download the Mac build and use that, but I played the web version just fine. I like the simplicity of the game and the art direction. I also am a sucker for turn based/ grid based games, so great job on utilizing that theme!

martintristan 2018-08-16 06:22

great game! really addicting. the art style is amazing and the character is cute. like what the others have said, the delay in movement really is distracting making me fall over a hole or at the edges. it's pretty hard since there are a lot of tiles that will break and only a few tiles with resources in them. balancing them a bit would be great (although i think that's what you were aiming for, to make the players spend money to fix the holes). overall, great game!

connell 2018-08-16 15:47

@ganonwarrior @martintristan @adhesion I’m not sure if you noticed, but CRUMBLE is a turn based game, that is why the movement is slow

jamesolivermusic 2018-08-16 17:40

Nice work! Once I figured out how it works, the turn based element, it all made sense! Very enjoyable game, everything came together nicely :)

dasun 2018-08-16 21:11

Nice game, the sounds and the graphics are super awesome, but maybe the controls could have been a little more faster and responsive but overall I had fun :D

potatolain 2018-08-16 22:35

This is a fun little puzzle game. You've already got comments that say pretty much everything I could come up with. I didn't actually have major issues with the controls - if the game weren't turn-based they might've been a problem, but where I knew I didn't have to rush it was fine.

My only suggestion might have been to just stop the player from moving into a tile once it was completely removed; I kept accidentally trying to bump through a block I knew wasn't there anymore. (This would have, of course, required other game changes too; I realize it's not that simple!)

Overall I quite liked it though - thanks for a fun entry!

*Update*: Almost forgot; my score was 76000.

connell 2018-08-16 23:29

@cppchriscpp thanks for the feed back but if we prevented the player from moving into a hole then it would be too easy and I don't think it fits the gameplay

glitchman 2018-08-17 09:22

Very nice! I like it! :star:

*The inputs are misplaced on non-QWERTY keyboards.

dyzzyd 2018-08-17 10:48

Pretty cute game ! A bit to slow for me but fun to play

connell 2018-08-17 15:01

@glitchman wow you use a non qwerty keyboard? we never anticipated that!

shadow64 2018-08-17 18:21

This was a lot of fun. I like the graphics and I think it plays well and definitely fits the theme. My one suggestion would be to simplify the controls a bit. (I know that sounds crazy.) But if you just kept to WASD for when you're selecting where to teleport I think it would help avoid that sudden change to using the arrows. (Unless there's a reason you can't do that, but it seemed like I couldn't move during the teleport phase anyway.)

Along those same lines, I found using E for pickup a little awkward if you're using WASD, so it would've been nice to have keys for my right hand to use to accomplish the same actions as ERX (maybe JKL?). Again, these are very minor details and overall it was a fun experience. Congrats on finishing!

whycardboard 2018-08-17 19:22

Thanks, @shadow64. We didn’t put much thought into the keys or how that feels. Next time we will try some different arrangements!

yaniv 2018-08-17 22:45

Good game But controls need improvement

connell 2018-08-17 23:14

@yaniv as said previously, it is a turn based game

amba 2018-08-18 13:04

Awesome game. It feels really polished. The graphics are nice, the mechanics are intuitive. Didn't realized is a turn based until a while. The game that give the action game vibe but play as a turn based game are pretty cool. I loved the soundtrack, it just give so much more to the mood of the game. It's very impressive what you guys done in 72 hours!

connell 2018-08-18 15:46

@amba Appreciate the positive feedback!

teo-miklethun 2018-08-19 04:48

The wait after each move before you can make the next is a bit much, but the music and everything else is amazing! Great job!

connell 2018-08-19 15:43

@teo-miklethun it is turn based that is sorta how it's supposed to be

laminariy 2018-08-19 16:15

Little cute game! I like it, but the sounds of the explosion scare, and you can not know when the next platform will disappear

whycardboard 2018-08-19 16:21

@connell I know it’s supposed to BE a turn based game, but it doesn’t FEEL like a turn based game.

connell 2018-08-19 16:48

@matthew-hrehirchuk you are a dev too

connell 2018-08-19 16:48

should have found out earlier both of us

teo-miklethun 2018-08-19 17:48

@connell I know, I'm not saying it shouldn't be. But take a look at other turn based games with similar movement, e.g. snakebird: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJJa3hMbs4s or rust bucket: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HOUkehuX2A These games are both turn based, but almost immediately after you make a move, you can make another. You don't have to. Theoretically, the player could just wait forever and nothing would progress. But the player SHOULD be able to execute as fast as they can think, and shouldn't be arbitrarily restricted by the animation time, and the few frames directly after when movement isn't allowed. If the player knows what they want to do exactly, the execution of that should take almost no time whatsoever.

planetgames 2018-08-22 17:57

Excellent music

draeskai 2018-08-22 22:55

I agree with @amba and I don't really know what to add x) Really good work!
