LD42 — Running out of space

PistonBreak by Gipzo 2018-08-16T20:46:55Z

Nice entry, the levels are simple but well executed.

I can feel that you put everthing you add to make the game pleasing visually without a lot of art skills, and it works very well! The visual and audio feedbacks are on point, everything was always understandable immediately. The music was enjoyable too. Great job!

Inventorious by MatiErnst 2018-08-17T22:19:54Z

Not a very original take on the theme but the implementation is great, with a lot of little clever twists.

The art is good, very efficient, and the music is a bit repetitive but not annoying. The level of polish makes it a very enjoyable experience.

Good initiative to have posted the solutions on this page.

Great job :)

Reasonable Claustrophobia by SkullPixel 2018-08-17T22:57:37Z

One of the best entry I played, great take on the theme, the mechanic is very original and the levels are fun even if the boss lacks visual and audio feedback when he takes damage (I was not sure how I was supposed to kill him at first).

I love the artstyle and the music was great. I'm just baffled that your game lacks a respawn after death feature with that level of polish. Excellent game, well done!

TrackBlasters by paulloz 2018-08-15T15:33:47Z

@fullmontis Hi! Thank you for your comment! You can press Escape to go to the pause menu and restart the race or chose another track. :)

.S by torcado 2018-08-15T00:36:49Z

Cool game, the puzzle were nice and the simple aesthetic works perfectly with the gameplay. I think you should get rid of the physics-based gameplay though, it doesn't add anything to the puzzle but frustration (and the puzzle are good, so it's a shame). Great job overall! Some sound design would make it even better :)

.S by torcado 2018-08-15T16:12:26Z

@torcado eh, we'll have to agree to disagree. I think it's a decent puzzle, but a poor platformer because of the lack of control you have on the ball/snake.

no-kill by daniel 2018-08-17T21:20:15Z

Extremely cute game, I wanted to recue all the good bois and girls. The art is excellent, and I love the barks matching the music. I think that the level is too big and you move waaaaay too slowly. I'd love to read the little text boxes describing each dog but there is definitely no time if I want to feed them all. :( Great entry overall!

Space Scrap! by Alex Lutay 2018-08-16T20:27:25Z

It looks really good(and by good I mean gorgeous) but : - too many systems - too few visual feedback (and no audio, so no audio feedback) - the text is waaaaay too small

It's definitely an ambitious game, but it needs to accomodate for the player (and I know it's hard for a jam game to introduce mechanics, especially if there are a lot of them). Here the player is immediately overwhelmed, before he even knows what any of the button does.

Lootsalot by Sn4pi 2018-08-14T20:01:03Z

Cool game, I love the Resident Evil 4 style inventory, so I had a lot of fun. The game is kind of hard with the mouse but I then played it with my Cintiq and it became too easy. The game looks great for a tablet, it needs a bit of difficulty tuning but the mecanics are solid! The graphics are pretty too :) My only gripe is that sometimes it wasn't very clear where the character really was to drop the item on him. Maybe the merchant store could be a real pause so that the player can take his breath, it becomes a bit too frantic otherwise. Great job !

Where Stars Belong by NORRIMO 2018-08-16T17:13:08Z

The atmosphere is great, the art is extremely pleasing and the music relaxing.

I like the sense of mystery your game has, and its introspective nature. The "puzzle" were not very imaginative though.

I'm not sure if I finished the game. I got to the top of the tower, shot stars, then found a secret platform that told me I could shoot stars with "R" and... that's it?

Good entry overall, even if I'm not too sure how it fits the theme.

One last point: if you're gonna use WASD for your control scheme, please make a rebind option so that other types of keyboards can play too. Not everyone uses a QWERTY keyboard :)

Encumbered - Deckbuilding Inventory Action by impbox 2018-08-17T21:36:10Z

Gorgeous game, it takes a few tries to get used to the mechanics but it's a really fun experience. Not so sure how it exactly fits the theme, and it's a shame you don't have any music or sound fx with that level of polish on everything else. Loved it anyway!

Flesh Packer by nervous-composers 2018-08-15T22:25:07Z

Fun game, though the absurdity of the situation makes it difficult to find a logic to the "puzzle" :D

RED - 23 by louis-denizet 2018-08-16T19:10:53Z

Definitely one of the best entry I played. The voice robot is such a good idea and it adds so much to the game. Her personality is so bitchy, I loved her! The amount of polish is stunning, the power trip works very well. Controls could be perfected but it's a jam game, what you have is already amazing. The take on the them is mediocre though. But overall it's excellent.

Edit : I saw a lot of comments wishing to play with WASD instead of the arrow keys. While I understand the complaint, if you decide to do this (or for a future project) please remember that not all keyboard are QWERTY type, and add an option to rebind the keys manually. :)

Gold Eater by Finlal 2018-08-16T18:01:43Z

I love your color palet so much! The little animation of the ship is great too (even if I don't want to see it each time I restart a level). Loved the music.

I'm not too sure about the gameplay though. Some tiles seem to collapse randomly with time? If not, there is not enough visual feedback for me to understand how it works. The level design didn't work for me either. The tile based movement seems to indicate that it's a puzzle game, yet the levels are too big to understand the mechanics. I finished the first level but didn't care enough once I lost a few times in the second one to perservere. The invisible tiles seem like a random idea, and not a very elegant one for puzzles.

I'd love to see a postjam version with a few short levels to introduce the mechanics as a sort of tutorial, the graphic style really caught my eye and I wanted to love the game! :)

Eventful Horizon by bitdecay 2018-08-16T22:27:39Z

Okay, this is a very good game, so I'm gonna be picky.

The game mechanic is extremely good and original BUT it's also difficult to get used to. I see that you made some arrangements with the difficulty so that the player has some room to mess up, and that's great. But it's still frustrating when you lose and have to start over from the very beginning. What you need here are some checkepoints and a way to skip the (very good) cutscenes.

The throwing mechanic works well, but the little box takes forever to disappear when it falls into space, you need a way to fix that (it adds to the stress, but not in a good way).

I don't understand the purple sticky tiles. Do they do anything different than the "sand" ones? They really look like something dangerous, it's a bit of a problem.

The level design is great. It might lack some direction from time to time, but when I played it I had no problem to get to the end.

The mood is very good too, there's a good sense of mystery, you feel the horror of space in your bones.

I can feel that a lot of effort has been put into the art, but the style is still a bit bland. The texture are a bit boring, some lighting would help, and you should not use so many desaturated colors (all the greys seem to have a 0% saturation value, add some of the ambient color of your game in it)

Well, I guess that's all I have to nitpick. It's really an excellent entry, definitely one of the best of the jam. Great job, please tell me if you make a postjam version! :)

Eventful Horizon by bitdecay 2018-08-17T02:13:04Z

@nandemoguy thank you for your answer, I didn't feel the difference with the purple tile, I'll try it again tomorrow.:) Great job on the art in only 48 jours, the scale of the game is very ambitious.

Rainforest by SimoGecko 2018-08-16T19:57:17Z

The game is gorgeous, the take on the theme is really fun, and I love that you have an online leaderboard, it's like gamifying the gamification. :D I found it borderline implayable though, the controls are really rough, and the music quickly drove me mad. Maybe that's the point? ^^

SUPER CONVERGER by EnchaeC 2018-08-15T20:32:03Z

I loved the artstyle, minimalist and effecient. It also creates mystery about the world, it's great! The ambient music is excellent, very Super Metroidy. It plays smoothly, but it unfortunately lacks level design. You just run aimlessly until you find the next door or until the game tells in a not very elegant way where to go.

Great entry to expand on! Great job!

Zachary's Memory by namnam 2018-08-16T18:33:29Z

I didn't expect it. I really didn't expect to cry playing a Ludum Dare game. But I cried a fucking lot, this is the most powerful game I played this jam, and this might be one of the most powerful game I played period. I guess I'm biased since a lot (like, way too much) of the stuff the game talks about is so close to my own experience, but the mechanic, the writing, the delivery, everything hit home with this game.

Congrats, you get every single star I can give you (I didn't review "Fun" though, since it doesn't apply I guess).

And last but not least, excellent job making an english AND a french version in a few days, c'est du super boulot.

Loot Keeper by outstar 2018-08-14T22:51:21Z

Cool game, great visuals. The tutorial is very complete too. I feel like the controls are a bit clunky though : like other people said, playing with the mouse AND the keys feel very strange.

Pervertica - CCG by mitus 2018-08-15T15:29:32Z

I LOVE the idea of a rhythm fighting game, and that's why I'm gonna be a bit harsh here.

I think the execution is lacking : the inputs don't match the beat, the reverse arrow keys is a TERRIBLE idea, and the QWER keys is not as bad but it's bad anyway.

You should focus on a solid 4 arrow keys control scheme, with some solid tracks (like @coda-highland, it is NOT okay to rip Chrono Trigger music, especially for a rythm game). The combo mechanic is fun and it's satisfying to land a devastating blow, but it gives the game a "all or nothing" feel that's not really enjoyable for a music game. Usually music games let you enjoy the track even if you mess up a bit. Here you HAVE to master the combo mechanic to win, there is no learning curve, the difficulty is extremely high as soon as you start (and I know it's a jam game and these things need time to adjust). Maybe add a super meter that charges with the successful inputs and keep the combo meter as a way to multiply damages ? I don't know but going back to 0 potential damage each time you miss ONE note is way too punishing.

Otherwise, the art looks fine (the logo is extremely good, even it it lacks an indication that it is a rythm game, not just a versus game). The charadesigns are generic, I guess it's ok for an ecchi game but I'd love to see some diversity in those games.

I don't think the game fits in the theme very well. I like the idea of "running out of one action done with the space bar" but there are so many mechanics around it that it hardly qualifies as a central theme.

I'd love to see a postjam version of the game if by chance you consider working on one! :)

CapyBarbra: A New Brow by Ratherjolly 2018-08-16T20:39:18Z

Well, that was something else. Great job on the opening cinematic, it reminded me of the darkest hours of the longest Metal Gear Solid cutscenes. :') The game is not incredible, but it's fun for a little while, and I'm still confused about the plot, welle done!

Keeper of Balance by Cosmic Adventure Squad 2018-08-17T22:42:30Z

Excellent entry, the 3D is soooo good. The animation and FX are superbs too, and the music is catchy! Punching innocent people to oblivion is also extremely fun. The game is way too easy though, I kept the "balance" (and by that I mean population was under 15% at all time) for 150 years and got bored so I let the heroes kill me.

The heroes are stupid (and I know it's a game jam, balancing enemies is hard) but they are also way too weak. I had to let them all gang up on me without moving and it took them 10 seconds to kill me. The fact that you regain all your life and that the difficulty doesn't scale up is a problem.

I hope you fix this for a postjam version, I really enjoyed playing your game! :)

Vita Magicae by Anuke 2018-08-15T22:41:18Z

The art and audio are nice, the little story is a nice touch(though it seems a bit cliché... but I didn't get past the second enemy). But there is a reason why bulett hells are played on a vertical screen with a tiny spaceship : it's so you can concentrate on dodging (aiming with a mouse and a moving camera is a bad idea) and so you can easily tell where the hitbox of your ship is (usually the cockpit). Here I have to aim enemies that are outside of the screen, while dodging bullet hells and I can't say where the hitbox of anything is. Good job on the pattern though, they all look very nice, you should try to make an actual danmaku out of this! :)

Edit : I finally finished the game and there is definitely a lot of work that went into the game (I let the girl chip the last phase of the boss away though). I still stand with my previous comments, but I just wanted to applaud the level of polish.

NOOR by PNghasemi 2018-08-16T15:39:19Z

The art is stunning, the dialogs are funny, the take on the theme is great and the mechanic is super original. But I'm sorry, the game feel is terrible :( The character is sluggish, shooting lights is too slow and don't feel good, the game lacks checkpoints... There is so much to like in this concept but you really need to refine the overall gameplay experience. I'd love to see a postjam version with these problems adressed, this universe has so much character!

Mars Initiative by greenbluebit 2018-08-16T17:47:49Z

It's a very relaxing game, I'm not quiet sure I understood how it worked though. Ahah! The music notes played when the player clicks could have been better implemented, it sometimes "broke" the melody rather than fuse with it. I didn't understand why some batiments were destroyed sometimes, and sometimes not. I think some visual feedback or a short tutorial could help. Good job with the atmosphere anyway!

Mars Initiative by greenbluebit 2018-08-17T17:45:19Z

@greenbluebit I can ask our musician @noojsan if he has an idea on how to handle it, I'll let you know!

A Tale of Fish by dalton5000 2018-08-14T22:41:39Z

The visuals are nice and the music is very cute. Sadly, the actual gameplay is pretty boring. When your character says something like "this is becoming a chore", you know something is wrong. :P Bringing items to villagers is always tedious (and it gets worst when you can't speed through the dialogs) but the story nicely fits into the theme. The game crashed when I was talking to the treasure hunter, he was saying his lines twice and when he finished, everything froze.

CRUMBLE by whycardboard 2018-08-15T19:27:12Z

Nice game, it's simple yet enjoyable. I'm not sure if the concept can be expanded but it simply works for a short game. The graphics are pleasing and everything is understandable. The music and sound fx are nice (though I couldn't help but hear "My Band" from D12 when I heard the title screen music >< ) Great job!

Cyber Janitor by Croosle 2018-08-14T20:36:22Z

I really wanted to enjoy the game, the mood was nice and the music really relaxing, but the framerate and the controls are terrible (sorry ><) and it went against the quiet atmosphere. I'm not sure that the game truly fits the theme either.

If you can make the framerate smoother it could be a super enjoyable little experience! Maybe change the shop feature? It's not super elegant (what is the currency? What is this shop?).

Feed Us by El-Metallico 2018-08-16T14:45:05Z

I love the palet and the freaky faces the animals make when you lose. I find the game sort of difficult, but mostly because the controls are imprecise. Maybe it lacks some visual feedback? Also the random nature made me frequently out of the stuff that the animals wanted (I guess that's the take on the theme? I understand that there is a button to reset the fridge but I could'nt make it work). Good entry overall! It just needs some refining :)

Demonic Digestion by DodoIta 2018-08-16T16:18:19Z

Nice game, very pleasing visually and the music is relaxing (though a bit repetitive).

Not a very original game but I played it for a while because I wanted to unlock every upgrade, well done! (I didn't understand how the shuriken worked unfortunately)

I saw the giant skeleton at the end of my first run and never again after that, is this a bug? Good job guys! :)

Will Survive by foxserranu 2018-08-15T20:17:24Z

The game is really beautiful, the cutscene is a nice touch (though it is very disconnected from the art style of the gameplay part). Unfortunately the mechanics lack depth and it seems to be a very obvious take on the theme. If you can bring a twist to the overused "survive the night" genre in a postjam version, it would be great to play, you already have a very pretty creation!

Night Shift by lootgrounds 2018-08-17T22:00:36Z

Great atmosphere, and very realistic nightshift simulation :D I like the narrative you start here, but I'm not sure if I was stuck or if there was no more content the second time my boss told me I was an idiot by mail. Not sure if there are events happening on the monitor screen because I definitely didn't have the patience to keep on looking for long.

Also, what does it have to do with the theme?

SpaceBreaker by MarkD 2018-08-14T23:43:38Z

Okay, first I thought "oh, someone actually made the game about the play on words everyone thought about".

Then I tried the game and thought "eh that's not too bad for a one button game"

Than I saw the upgrade feature and I was like "oh no"

Seriously, if you guys had not put an end game state, I could have keep on playing it and breaking my space bar for a while. The visual and audio feedback are so satisfying, this thing is a drug.

Well done guys.

(also you had the guts to make the player a square, so he's not even really running at all. Seriously, well done)

Claustrochlophoby by cepeka 2018-08-16T17:31:17Z

Wow, what an interesting game!

Wait, it's not.

Controls feel terrible, the run speed is at best a slow walk speed in any decent fps, the depth of field is atrocious, and there is no punch animation.

At least the visual style is an interesting choice, even if it's not pretty per se.

The fact that the main feature of the game is to punch protesters (not rioters, the only character using violence here is the player) makes the whole thing worst. This is the worst entry I've played so far.

(also don't force people to play with a WASD control scheme. Judging by the assets you chose, I suppose you're french, so you should know some people in the world use other types of keyboard)

Foggy raft by dimlight 2018-08-16T19:50:01Z

Nice game, it took me a while (I mean, a whiiiiiiile, it needs a real tutorial, the Help button doesn't help that much) to understand how to play, but once I got it, I liked your take on the them a lot. I still don't understand the battle against the monster (I think you should keep all your game played with the mouse, it's very awkward to switch to the arrow keys and space bar. A lot of the features need to be refined but it's a very ambitious game, so congrats on implementing so much!

Good job! Please tell here me if you make a postjam version. :)

A Bar In Space by Fluffy_Kaeloky 2018-08-16T20:57:19Z

I can't play the game correctly cause I don't know my QWERTY (not sure if I would be better if you had programmed an AZERTY version, but eh, that's my excuse) but I still had a great time.

The play on word is terrible and perfect at the same time, the fingers crashing on the keyboard feel extremely satisfying, the sprites are cute and the space bar music is super catchy. Great game!

Sirkulphage by MrBehemoth 2018-08-16T21:36:48Z

Loved this game, one of the best entry of the jam for me. It's very addictive, the sound design (especially the sound of the bubble popping) is EXTREMELY satisfying. The mechanics are refined, everything is very simple yet polished.

My only complaint would be that I feel like the hitboxes are a bit too big: I have the impression that the spikes of the Sirkuls can hit me, not just the circle of the bubble. If feels unfair and wrong somehow.

Here is my high score, it's not much but I'll try to beat it later :) Sirkulphage.png

California Jane by fivenamefivesocks 2018-08-15T21:52:52Z

Excellent entry, the production level is through the roof.

The take on the theme is not original per se, but the levels are great and there are so many of them, each very different.

For the life of me, I can't finish the level 19 : I can push the sleeping mummy head on a broken tile without it collapsing, but I can't push it if it's awake (it immediately collapses under its feet). Is that normal ? Am I juste dumb ?

Edit : Woo ! I finally got it. I was just dumb.

LD48 — Deeper and deeper

Monkey Quest by paulloz 2021-04-27T16:36:10Z

@kypello IT WAS YOUR HUBRIS, YOUR ARROGANCE! Ahah yeah the last level can be pretty darn hard, especially when you want those sweet sweet gems. But also since there is a good amount of random it can go south quickly. We're thinking of changing the shovel in a potential post jam version : lizardmen could fall into the holes and then the hole would disappear, effectively letting you "kill" enemies.

Monkey Quest by paulloz 2021-04-28T20:53:57Z

@nethead Thanks for your feedback! Ahah, how fast are you running? Gotta go fast I guess :D

Monkey Quest by paulloz 2021-04-29T18:57:30Z

@justcamh Thanks a lot for streaming the game, happy you liked it! The lava block you had at the end of your run wasn't a softlock, though it was veeery unlucky ahah. You could have taken a small detour just south of where you were to reach the same point on the other side of the lava. There are possible softlocks though (you can block yourself with the shovel (but we intend to tweak how the shovel works) or potentially you could be extremely unlucky and spawn several connected lava blocks (you can use your I-frames from being hit to cross through but yeah that's at least one HP lost). Again thanks a lot for playing, streaming and liking the game! It was super fun watching you play!

Monkey Quest by paulloz 2021-04-29T22:19:03Z

@daegonz Thank you for saving Bubbles friends, you're a gentle soul! Thank you for playing the game too, I'm really happy you enjoyed it. :)

Volcanaclimber by niksg 2021-04-27T14:39:32Z

Great concept, the music also fits the game very well! The game looks clean and nice. As others have said, it's super hard, mostly I think because the physics don't feel very natural, the lantern comes bouncing back at full speed for no apparent reason pretty often. It could be tweaked into an excellent game though, really liked it even if I didn't break past ~~9~~ 14 meters :D On a side note, the visual feedback when the lantern hits a wall could be stronger, I didn't understand what happened the first few times.

Bunny Bunny Dig Dig by ZakAmana 2021-04-27T19:28:48Z

I mean... I maxed out the skill tree so... awesome work ahah, I still can't understand the level how polish you achieved in 2 days, we were a team of 3, worked like slaves for 3 days for our jam entry, I'm pretty proud of the level of polish we got but... damn that's something else. Well done!

Sewer's Plague : Into the nest by Nicolas Revillon 2021-04-27T19:17:31Z

Really polished entry, I had troubles defending both characters but that's just me playing badly. The art is stunning and has a lot of charm, and the mood is perfectly set.

TAILSPIN! by Saturnyoshi 2021-04-27T20:18:12Z

This is amazing, the level of polish is incredible, I truly don't have anything bad to say. Give your congratulations to your level designer because they're a beast. I played up to the end of world 2, 100%ing every level, I plan to finish later today!
