LD42 — Running out of space

Climb or Drown by Decentsauce 2018-08-19T01:25:22Z

Really like the game, there is quite a lot of work to be done on the movement part. But the overall snappy response of the controls did work out to my advantage in controlling my player in the air. Really loved the music, it gave me some old school donkey kong country vibes.

Climb or Drown by Decentsauce 2018-08-20T00:51:43Z

@decentsauce The first thing I do in most of my projects, is throw out the Unity character controller if I need anything else other than prototyping movement. It is easier most of the time to create a limited controller tailored for your project, than modifying the standard character controller (rigidbody I guess in this case), because as you said, it is a weird piece of code and difficult to expand properly on.

Game plays well, spacebar counts even when already in the air? got stuck in the last level as I could clip of the screen. Lastly some audio would be nice, even if it was just for jumping. Overall nice game.

@chicomcastro If you make a wall in the same way you did on the left side, the problem is fixed :p

Break by starhacker 2018-08-16T20:51:59Z

The game is very fun to play! The rotating mechanic is very interesting and the game kept me engaged for a while spinning around like a mad man once I got the controls figured out. However, I got a game over because there where no stationary tiles, however I had a row of 4 stationary blocks left. Not sure if this bug has appeared before, but now you know. Nice work overall!

Pro tip. Use an English site to host your game, that way you will reach a wider audience in Ludum Dare. Every button I press on the provided side pop ups either some fishe add or a pay to download service, which no one is going to do.

I myself speak Dutch, but everything we made is in English to prevent language barriers. The translation you posted here as a description is very confusing to, can't make much of it.

Edit: Just skimmed through the 1gig .exe file and found some fishy lines that directed towards the OS root folder, not sure why it would need acces to such locations, but it was fishy enough for me to not install whatever the .exe contained. It would be better if it was a standalone application which is what most of the community creates, no installation needed.

XORN: The Fallen God by ThibaultAr 2018-08-21T15:55:41Z

Game looks great! However the game-play itself felt a bit disconnected. The animation feedback should be a bit quicker and more "snappy" the slow animation of the hit attack made everything feel sluggish. Game has also serious frame freeze issues in the webGL build when enemies spawn (not present in the offline builds).

Shoot O' Space by TinyNerd 2018-08-14T07:41:19Z

Like the idea, but the music gets old quite quickly. The gameplay itself is ok, but not much is keeping me play furter, some feeling of progression is missing. I like the colors and the art, it gives a good retro feel! Keep it up.

Commercial Mars: Lunar Lander + Tetris Mash up by Yaro 2018-08-16T20:47:37Z

first 10 tries I had an unavoidable 5 block insta kill. All blocks fell down at a very fast pace, I see that this is not the case with other people playing it, not sure what is going on. Either way for in my case the game was pretty much unplayable. However I love lunar lander and the take on tetris is a very interesting approach!

The Dream of Becoming Too Fat by SkyreX 2018-08-26T12:48:46Z

I did not see the theme come back in this game, you grow fatter and larger yes, but I do not see how to fits literately or figuratively in running out of space. The controls are "ok" they fulfill their purpose. The map rotation is a bit disorienting, a smoother rotation would fix this. Lastly is the game mechanic easy exploitable by holding any running direction and spamming map rotate. To give the player a more grounded feel, create floor, walls and a ceiling, when the map rotates, the player won't have such a "floaty" experience.

Take those points in mind for your next game and it will definitely be an improvement!

Also, I have found several "ghost" accounts with lazy empty submissions that refer to this submission page. It is not cool at all to crowd the jam with spoof accounts to get more exposure for your game. Every one has worked hard on their projects and every deserves a spot and a chance.

Color Run by Adam Pandos 2018-08-14T13:14:57Z

I like the concept, it has potential. Only pet peeve is that the first level was way to hard, that is until I discovered that your double jump resets after a wall-run, I did not expect it to reset. This should have been explained in the tutorial(correct me if I am wrong). That said it feels really satisfying landing on surfaces with special features (such as the speed boost).

SpaceBreaker by MarkD 2018-08-14T12:58:16Z

@xanderrread Yes, we where contemplating whether to use more inputs, however, given the theme, we deliberately choose to only use one button input (the space bar) very early on in development. Will keep this in mind for future games though, thank you for your feedback!

SpaceBreaker by MarkD 2018-08-14T13:59:48Z

@josscomposer Hi, thank you for liking the game! Now to answer your question about the theme: The theme is present over the whole game, but might not instantly be noticeable. We purposefully did not implement it in a way we would think most games where going to. We dit not interpret the theme as some sort of shortage / size of space (we saw a lot of people using that concept). But rather something where you can be, in this case the player is in Cyber "Space" moving(running but with the box) at such a speed that you "break (run)" out of that "space" entering a new dimension, thus being in 3D space and lastly after the credits you exit the game, entering your desktop "space".

ps. This is not meant to be excuse, I hope it does not sound mean, just giving you an explanation in the way we approached the theme.

@monkosum The space bar is on purpose, simply because the word space is in it. We thought it would be funny to solely use that key, to fit within the theme. You can read a similar answer a few posts back.

@exofrenon Yes we have been playing around with the bloom a lot before we where satisfied, it is really hard to balance the effect to give the illusion of neon-ish light being emitted, but still not burn your retinas. On some screens the effect is good (my home screen) on other screens it might be to bright (my parents their screen for instance). Definitely something fair to notice and comment on, thank you!

All of you thanks for the feedback and good luck with the ratings!

It was a blast working on this project.

SpaceBreaker by MarkD 2018-08-14T14:31:47Z

@josscomposer That is indeed a valid point, noted!

Of-course every one always 110% finishes a game to completion the understand the deep layers of symbolic lore :^)(joking)

SpaceBreaker by MarkD 2018-08-15T14:16:49Z

@grsni If you mean that the top UI gets stretched by the Chromatic aberration and speed distortion, then yes. However, we have got a lot of feedback that users lose quite a bit of readability, so it is definitely a point we will keep an eye out for our next project.

If the image is literally cut out of screen space, then it might be because the game is with a 16:9 ratio in mind and scales to sizes within that aspect ratio, if a monitor has a different aspect ratio clipping might occur (the reason for this is that all our test systems work on a 16:9 ratio, so it is the only reference we could base the game on).

Lastly, the upgrade system is there so that users can make progression after traveling a distance. If a user cant click fast enough and gets blocked by the same wall, he can invest in strength so that less speed is needed to break through it. The velocity upgrade gives the player a higher speed boost per click so that higher speeds can be reached more easily. This is done to push players past the "break point" in-game (which is the end of the game).

However your feedback is very welcome and we will take it to heart, thank you.

@andrey-ugolnik No, not at all, it could not be further away from arkanoid. It is as far away from arkanoid as the earth is from the center of the universe ;). We have not made a html5 version because the ending would not work then as it closes you out of the game (symbolism).

SpaceBreaker by MarkD 2018-08-20T18:00:59Z

@the-icy-one Yea don't give up! We believe in you. A spacebar can be pressed with anything. Give it all you've got!

SAVE THE PICKLE by Canoo_ 2018-08-14T19:46:30Z

It was very unclear which crops where getting destroyed, some directional feedback from where to sound would originate can fix that! Also no way to exit the game except for alt+f4. The final thing that i missed was a purpose. Because there was no incentive to plant the seeds at all. I would be better off without planting them as they then cannot be eaten. The idea itself is promising though, but still a bit rough. I like the way you implemented the theme.

Invasion Failed by Wargon 2018-08-16T21:36:14Z

Really love this game, give a very nostalgic newgrounds era feeling! Really like the art and the audio. Some different type of weapon effects or upgrades would give it just that extra bit of polish.

Running Out Of Space, In Space! by Fireyoyo 2018-08-14T23:17:36Z

I am glad and checked back on this game, only to be surprised that the download was fixed, and more importantly the game is fun as hell! The enemies pushing the bariers is a very unique mechanic and makes thinking about enemy priority fun, controls where snappy which is always good and I really liked the music and parallax. Overall a very good job. Only pet peeve would be the UI colors not everything was as readable as the rest.

Running Out Of Space, In Space! by Fireyoyo 2018-08-15T00:06:45Z

@fireyoyo Well, I would just keep it as advice for your next game. Updating the UI later when the jam is completely over will bear not much to your ratings :). This is the first jam I entered myself and I am amazed by the results of people and actually getting constructive feedback. I myself do not mind people pointing out errors or having a negative opinion, as long as its constructive so that we can learn from it. You do not find that kind of, lets say professionalism on a lot of public forums and (blerg) facebook. Good luck!

Blast Off! by heidelbert 2018-08-14T19:52:53Z

I like the 2 dimensional aspect of building your systems. You do not have a lot of time to think out an efficient layout, but that is a good thing! Audio would have given this just that extra bit of polish though. (Also the UI does not register to the scene depth, so the Depth of Field effect blurs those pixels if there is no building behind it. just a heads up)
