Could not understand how to use the button at level 3 or 4

mmason 2019-04-29 16:52

This was a really fun game, it required me to think to figure out how I was going to beat the levels and I liked the mechanic of how full you were. Adding a few sprites for more full/less full would have been a neat visual improvement as well as a coin popping out each time you dropped down

very nice game overall

izaacs 2019-04-29 17:14

I really liked the idea with the weight of the coins. But I could not push the button. Even when the bag was completely full.

von-vista 2019-04-29 17:20

This was a fun game, but it deviates too far away from the Life is Currency theme, although it has that currency part in check. The pixel graphics and sprites used is very high in quality and a solid platformer. Congrats!

dk5000p 2019-04-29 17:26

I liked the concept and the visuals, but there were some difficulties with the implementation. I think focusing on jumping and avoiding picking up coins would have been more interesting. Having to get all the coins in order to push buttons was very difficult to get to happen and ultimately made the game less fun.

mika-la-grand 2019-04-29 17:29

@von-vista I didn't want to go for a trade health for something kind of game, because that seemed to obvious to me. So you trade health for movement.

mika-la-grand 2019-04-29 17:30

@izaacs If you walk over the button, it should trigger. If you can be more specific I can try to recreate it, if it is a bug.

mika-la-grand 2019-04-29 17:30

@generalanimal you need to have the bar in the top left completely filled.

mika-la-grand 2019-04-29 17:31

@pov can you remove this comment?

mika-la-grand 2019-04-29 17:31

@pov can you also remove this comment?

mika-la-grand 2019-04-29 17:31

@pov and this one.

mika-la-grand 2019-04-29 17:31

@pov I clicked publish quite a few times and didn't realise it was going to actually publish the same comment a bunch of times.

erikkire 2019-04-29 17:33

Nice music! And fun idea regarding the theme. The controls are fine but with some more polishing you can get them to super-mario-quality. Not often thought of but you manage to get really good-looking menues. I just have one stupid question... how do I press the button to open the gate? I tried standing and jumping on it with a full bag.

lone-wolf 2019-04-29 18:31

Love it! Nice work +1

pokenoufl 2019-04-29 18:41

Cool idea that is well executed. The buttons could have been a bit more forgiving (activate at 75% or +) so that you dont fail by slightly overjumping but it still worked really well! Congrats

lemur 2019-04-29 19:08

The controls, idea and graphics are nice, one problem though... At level 3 I am stuck...

vinay-rao 2019-04-29 21:00

Pretty neat. I'd like to echo the feedback that the buttons are a bit too strict in their weight requirement. I wish there were more stages with additional mechanics. The extra stage introduced those % obstacles, which was interesting. Unfortunately the game ended immediately after that stage. More things like that would help make the game meatier.

Probably just needed a few more hours for additional stages and content. However, it's not a bad foundation upon which to continue the project. Good job!

jorne 2019-04-29 22:21

Very original idea and nicely designed! There was one small moment where the button wouldn't go down at first but eventually it did. Some more puzzles would obviously be nice, but you can save that to release some DLCs :)

john-snyder 2019-04-29 23:09

Very cool game and very nice execution of the game. I do feel that the difficulty ramps up a little too much when you enter the level where you have to jump over the lava, grab all the coins, and push the button. Part of the reason I believe that is because the coin placement between the gaps are a straight line when they should be in an arc or a diagonal line because the player jumps forward in an arc; most of the time you will miss at least one out of the three coins. Still, it was a pretty good game.

ariake81 2019-04-29 23:15

lovely nes like graphics!

tero-pulkkinen 2019-04-29 23:50

I didn't figure out how to get past the 2nd puzzle, as the button didn't do anything and collecting more coins was the only other option, and that didn't seem to help with pressing the button. So I'm stumped with the puzzle.

bakenshake 2019-04-30 03:38

I got stuck on the third puzzle. Couldn't figure out how to use the button! This is super duper creative, and I love it. Also love your notes about maybe possible kinda sorta their being an FPS hidden in here. Good job!

endssgamesstudio 2019-04-30 04:21

money is your biggest enemy... in real life is your best friend :p

sylvie 2019-05-01 02:23

Cute puzzle game! The platforming physics felt a bit awkward but the concept is very nice.

tamail 2019-05-01 13:54

This is a great platformer! I loved the mechanics with the beg getting heavier with more coins and getting rid of the weight by jumping. :)

ayama 2019-05-01 14:17

Great concept. I'm stuck at level 3. I don't know how to reach the button before losing money... But anyway the idea is nice.

gideon 2019-05-01 15:38

Wow, love the art! Music is a bit repetitive but the rest is pretty impressive! Nice concept :D

mika-la-grand 2019-05-01 21:01

A lot of feedback on the button (@erikkire @lemur @tero-pulkkinen @bakenshake). @pokenoufl thanks for the suggestion, I have reduced the amount of coins required to make it a bit easier. @ayama if I am not mistaken you mean Floor is Lava, I agree that that the vertical lava levels are pretty hard. It should now be a bit easier with the reduced requirements.

mika-la-grand 2019-05-01 21:04

@vinay-rao @jorne I believe you both made it all the way to the last puzzle, which is very impressive! I ran out of time to add more puzzles. I have added one extra level and made it bit easier for other players.

mika-la-grand 2019-05-01 21:09

@john-snyder I agree that those levels are quite difficult and the jumping is hard to master. If the coins are in an arc there is too much fall damage upon landing, with reduced fall damage you can't jump up to loose coins. So I didn't really have another option.

lazertrax 2019-05-01 23:25

Very cool puzzle concept! the music is a bit repetitive but I enjoyed the weight/jump mechanic! Thanks for making this

kaiomoi 2019-05-02 15:23

Good job!

black-flag 2019-05-02 16:06

Really good game, I really enjoyed the puzzles. The graphics were also very good! Overall, this is a great jam entry!

silkworm-sweatshop 2019-05-02 16:12

That was fun! Pretty unique mechanic and works well with the theme. Good job!

mharring 2019-05-02 17:21

Using the weight of the bag to influence the jumps, buttons and fans was a great idea! The jumping physics seemed a little off and make it hard to land where you would expect, but besides that I enjoyed it. Well done!

szabe 2019-05-02 17:35

Fun take on the theme! Really interesting concept and you expanded it nicely! Maybe a button for dropping coins would be nice, but otherwise I managed to get pretty far. Nice job!

cincerteri 2019-05-02 17:35

The coins affecting your motion is a really interesting mechanic and a nice interpretation of the theme. The graphics and sound could use some polishing, but a very nice game overall.

mrstari 2019-05-02 17:50

funny game :hearts:

sebeee 2019-05-02 19:32

It was a fun game and i think it is quiet clever on how it suited the theme

@mika-la-grand sorry i didn't focus on the bag of coins

sadsmile 2019-05-02 20:15

Pretty good idea (i think that you could expand on it).

very-dark-lord 2019-05-02 21:11

Is there a way to access the jam version of the web build? Or is the web version only available as post jam? (If the latter, you should maybe clarify that in your download links, as this will probably be the version most people will play and rate)

chrissx2 2019-05-02 21:21

Whith some improvements it could be a nice little game :). Right now the air-controls are rather weird and the feedback on how heavy the bag is could be represented by the size of the bag. At the moment it feels like there're only two weight states and nothing between them. Anyway, I enjoyed playing your game :)

le-slo 2019-05-02 22:27

The idea is nice, and the puzzles are well made (In some of them there are extra coins). However the game need a better telegraphy for the weight of the coins, at least to know when a button can be pressed. Also the movement in the air when taking coins is a bit weird. Keep working!

charlesschar 2019-05-02 23:59

Really like the concept, but it suffers from poor implementation in some places. Controlling your weight is a good idea, but it is cumbersome to have to continually jump to get rid of it. Also, since landing gets rid of your weight, it is difficult to keep consistent if you need to have a certain weight to press a switch. Aside from this, there are many bugs in the game that could use fixing. This could turn into a very neat game, though, with the proper adjustments.

edevjogos 2019-05-03 01:08

Great concept, and good level desing, i've enjoyed playing.

mika-la-grand 2019-05-03 13:26

@sebeee The player is literally a bag of coins and the coins also function as your health. In which way does it not fit the theme?

@very-dark-lord You are very dark, the jam build is available in the downloads on the itch pages (v1.0).

@chrissx2 The weight for 0-50% is the same, from 50-100% it linearly increases so that movement is reduced to half. Thanks for the suggestions, I will consider how to better visualise the weight of the bag.

@charlesschar Thanks for the feedback. Can you elaborate on the bugs that you encountered? (I know of the fading issues when there are bunch of things trying to fade)

twan-mul 2019-05-03 17:10

great literal take on the concept, very original puzzle ideas. the music was crazy and great at the same time!

duke 2019-05-03 17:23

Nice general concept! I liked the idea of a puzzle plattformer like this. The mechanics weren't totally clear at first, but I did get behind it rather fast. But the switches were a mystery til lthe end. I didn't know how heavy I have to be to trigger them. Seemed to me, that every switch hat another threshold. Also, in the "%" level, I ran into a bug where I fell into the lava and the level did not restart, so I was stuck.

The art and music were a bit basic, but that's fine for a first impression. Jumping and movement controls could be a little tighter and more responsive. That's all of my criticism. Good job guys!

very-dark-lord 2019-05-03 18:00

Pretty much what @duke said. But I also have to say I really dig the way you let the player discover all the gameplay elements one by one without any text. That kind of Portal-esque explorative tutorial gameplay/level design is really neat! Well done.

ryfi 2019-05-03 20:54

It was interesting and sort of fun as a puzzle game, I'll say that. In terms of the theme, I feel that there was no attempt. Instead of having a health bar, you just replaced the word "health" with "money". You can not spend the money, so there is no reason to call it that. I also feel that there aren't enough levels for the 72 hours of game making allowed. The bonus level also seems impossible. There should be more of a tutorial to the game, it is unclear as to what the controls, switch button rules, and fan rules are. A tutorial would be very helpful. At one point the game froze and I couldn't do anything but restart it. As for the music and graphics, good job for working alone and your first time.

schizoid2k 2019-05-04 01:39

Nice game, nice concept. I also could not active the button, even when the bag was full of coins... not sure if I am doing something wrong. Nice graphics and audio.

falak 2019-05-04 13:31

NIce little concept but well executed. Good luck!

samh 2019-05-04 13:51

(juding the jam entry; I haven’t tried the post-jam one yet)

An interesting idea. The mechanics work but the controls feel a bit funny. My #1 complaint would be that I never really knew how many coins there were in the health/currency bar, or how many coins I needed in order to press the button, so I completed the levels through a lot of trial and error rather than actual planning.

Also I found a way around level 6 without using the fan, just by jumping one platform to the right without taking any coins, then jumping back to the left while taking the coins. It was enough to press the button.

I won’t blame you for not finding a groundbreaking idea around the theme. It was one of the worst themes in the history of Ludum Dare.

mika-la-grand 2019-05-04 14:58

@ryfi Thanks for your perspective, I hadn't thought of it in that way yet. It is true that you don't buy anything with the currency, you just need to have a certain amount at a certain moment in order to progress through the levels. Having the right amount at the right moment is the challenge of the game. The first bonus level is hard, but you can make the jumps (build up some momentum and jump just when you leave the platform). There is also quite some margin for error.

@schizoid2k The button triggers when you enter it's trigger area, when you exit the area the button can be toggled again by entering the area. There should probably be some light on the button indicating when the button is checking for you and when you need to walk away and walk backover the button again.

@samh I created some new bugs in the post-jam version 1.1; but all bugs should now be fixed in version 1.2. The requirements are looser in the post-jam builds; buttons toggle when 80% or more), you can go up fan blowers when 50% or less, you can go down fan blowers when 80% or more. I'll have a look at the exploit for level 6, thanks for letting me know. I was hoping for the theme "side effects", because the current theme is quite similar to the previous one. It also results in a lot of games in which you use health to buy upgrades.

mika-la-grand 2019-05-04 17:59

Button not working

I just realised that it's not the button that doesn't work. It's the player that doesn't realise that they need to collect the coins in a certain order, because of the fall damage. I'll redesign the first level, maybe add another level before the first button level.

hunter-towe 2019-05-05 00:10

A living bag of coins-- that's interesting, to say the least! The controls could use a little bit of polish, but other than that, it was actually rather engaging and fun. Overall, not bad!

On a side note, it seems like the camera sometimes doesn't want to follow the player. Not sure if other people have had this problem, but I thought I'd bring it up.

yaen 2019-05-05 00:31

Fun game, frustrating "End"-level, agonizing music :D

I like how you ran with this idea, it turned out really well and you've got some pretty interesting puzzles in there. Yeah, just the non-extra end-level took me WAY too many tries lol

xtra-festive 2019-05-05 12:25

I enjoyed the concept of managing the fullness of the player with both puzzle and movement mechanics altered subsequently. I feel that this has more potential for unique gimmicks. The moment when you teach a player not to pick up too many coins to make a jump by taking advantage of a player's desire for coins is a very clever way to teach that mechanic.

Perhaps the fans could move the player faster to keep up the pace of the game, it's frustrating to go through a level with a slow fan and then fail and be required to go through it again with no real obstacles.

Also in the first fan level I encountered a bug where the slow-scrolling camera glitched and started moving down while the player reached the top, and I had to wait for the camera to float back up. I wasn't able to replicate this again after that first time.

re-markable 2019-05-05 12:32

Very innovative!

euler-moises 2019-05-07 03:31

The first attempts are always laborious, but very satisfying. Congratulations on leaving the comfort zone. Speeding and jumping is a bit confusing. Sometimes the bag jumps low and sometimes loud. I could not quite understand the logic of the jump. Otherwise, nothing to criticize. Keep training. I wish success!

I also have a game on Ludum 44. Please try, rate and comment.

amerigo-gazaway 2019-05-07 06:21

Clever gameplay mechanic with the coins and great use of theme! The music loop got a little annoying after a while, maybe just because it was such a short loop. If you ever need help in that dept (music/sfx) feel free to get in touch. Cheers!

grllle 2019-05-07 09:35

I really liked how i could discover the different mechanics through the level design. You seem to know a lot about good game design and the game shows that!

deni-vidi-vici 2019-05-08 12:13

I did severals levels.. really like mechanic with weight ... I enjoyed the game! :) Good luck ;)

jonas-tyroller 2019-05-09 22:04

Nice! Pretty well executed. I'm happy you made this. Would have been really awesome if the amount of coins were shown by modifying the size of the bag instead of in the UI. :)

comicsans 2019-05-13 20:36

Nice level design. I never did figure out how to control losing weight, though.

peterfonts 2019-05-14 12:15

Nice game! The machinc losing coins is great! Maybe the mechanic needs polish like sometimes recover again coins instead to restart again the level (find another way to take coins). Other part is polish the feedback increasing or reducing the size of the bag. Overall is a great game! Congrats!

jharler 2019-05-14 16:45

Great use of theme! I really enjoyed this. The platforming was solid, although the rules governing interacting required me to check the instruction a couple of times. No big deal though, but maybe some feedback if you try to push the button and can't ("You're too heavy", "No enough coins"), so the player doesn't have to take their eyes outside of the game to figure out what to do. Overall though, very enjoyable and nice work!

pequenodev 2019-05-17 00:56

Finished it, I liked too much some of the puzzles but it could be a bit more polish in controls and mechanics like fans (maybe it take long time going up and down). Anyways, fluid game and interesting challenges. Great job mate!

mika-la-grand 2019-05-18 17:59

Thanks for the feedback guys! I have made the player go up/down fan blowers twice as fast.

msiddeek 2019-05-20 01:47

Cool idea and smooth execution! I like how having coins can sometimes be positive and sometime negative depending on the situation. Really good job!
