Really nice idea, I especially love the aesthetic/art direction. Great idea to have multiple types of flowers with different effects. Managed to snag a win on my second try :)

Nice!

@starven Thank you very much. :)

rhewid 2018-08-13 14:36

Won on my second game too. Tried then to go for more board control but had some hard time. Very fun with quick rounds. Keep it up!

girania 2018-08-13 16:36

This game is beautiful. Both the graphics and the idea, I really liked it! And I had so much fun trying to keep the balance! Nice work!!

I really like this idea.

It would have been nice if I could have switched flower types with a hotkey, like 1,2, and 3. The scroll wheel felt kind of awkward.

I didn't see any indicator that told me if the delay between planting flowers had run out or not, so I often resorted to clicking multiple times with no effect before it let me plant again, which made the game feel unresponsive.

I'd suggest implementing either a visible cooldown indicator, or maybe even remove that delay entirely and replace it with a currency that you spend on flowers. Then you could add a fourth flower type to increase generation of that currency and add another layer of depth to the game.

The rounds seem just long enough to fill the board and push against your borders just a bit. It would be fun if I could choose to extend the round timer and try to wipe out the other colors, or make a big underdog effort to make a comeback, instead of just doing the land grab phase.

The sound effects were sufficient, but I think with some more time they could be more enjoyable and engaging.

Great entry though.

@erasmus-crowley I tried to make everything in the game controlled by the mouse, but I will try adding hotkeys linked to the flower types. Also, there's a small bar under the cursor that fills up each time you plant a new flower and then slowly goes down, and when it's empty you can plant a new flower. Though your ideas sound interesting, I will test them, and maybe upload a post jam version.

Cool! I like the idea, very original, although I didn't understand exactly how the flowers that you don't plant yourself pop up, but I still had fun while playing it.

Graphics are cute, simple but the popping animation feels very good. The sounds are simple too and could be improved but they work fine.

Suggestion: I think having the current flower shape follow the pointer would make it clearer than having to look at the corner.

@quetzakol thank you for the feedback, flowers create new flowers of their same type next to them every few seconds. I will test your suggestion.

I really liked this game. Was very clear with the UI and sound. The short games also makes it possible to try different strategies. Its also one of the games with the best "mood" around because of the happy flowers, there are no loosers in this game!

noam 2018-08-13 18:56

@rhewid @girania @gettingrekt Thank you all so much for all of your kind words. :)

Biodiversity: The Game! Very interesting and enjoyable concept. A well-executed strategy game in the compo is hard to come by, but you did it well. The tight scope of options, the simple but beautiful screen representation, time as your only resource: this has potential as a post-jam game for sure.

noxalus 2018-08-13 19:48

It's kinda hypnotizing, and it looks really nice! :astonished:

The AI is pretty aggressive, it's a real flower war :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

hunter-towe 2018-08-14 05:34

I like the way you did the visuals-- they are simplistic but without being cheap.

There's not much audio, but what you do have of it is decent.

The game as a concept fits the theme, but I think maybe it could be done a little better. Although the flowers do take up room, I feel more like it's time I'm running out of and not necessarily space.

This game felt a little too quick for me to enjoy it at first, because I felt like it ended before I could make any progress; however, that was probably because I was still learning the game. The difficulty was just enough to feel rewarding.

All in all, this game is a good experience! It's something I would like to see be expanded upon in the future!

haustgeirr 2018-08-14 14:53

Quite a nice somewhat chilled game. I like the addition of depth with different flowers. I would enjoy this as a multiplayer. Nice one.

samuel-kriman 2018-08-14 14:53

This was very nice in its simplicity. I wish there was bit more stats shown at the end, like how many flowers of each type each team had at the end or something.

lars-erik 2018-08-14 17:15

Nice simple game. Would be nice to be able to resize / scale. Also I couldn't spot the timer. Would probably pay a buck to play this on mobile. :)

fenderbate 2018-08-14 18:46

Once I got the hang of it, the game become really enjoyable and great (and also really easy, but that's not the point :P) really nice game

boddiul 2018-08-15 01:03

Hey! I like cellular automatons and your game reveals this topic! That's really cool

quorusa 2018-08-15 01:43

It's colorful ! Simple, but I like it ! Great idea with flowers ! And your planting couldown. It's original. :D

2018-08-15 17:25

Pretty game! I included it in my compilation video series of the Ludum Dare 42 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/YTqGyFG4tXA

lexomir 2018-08-21 18:06

Nice chill game. Once you figure out the strategy it's pretty hard to lose, so maybe add more mechanics that the teams can use to keep the player thinking.

psychead 2018-08-31 08:23

Nice twist on Conways game of life. The art was pleasing, the gameplay and atmosphere nicely chilled. I think the different plant types are not necessary to win in the current state of the game. In fact, I played the game without knowing they were there and had to restart it after reading explanations. Still, I like the idea of the plant types. Good job.
