Fun to play but pretty hard!

ticklemecolor 2018-08-12 21:36

Lots of fun. Wish I could place items in the background after the foreground is filled with building.

star-sought 2018-08-12 21:39

I saw this in the feed yesterday and thought it was a great concept. It's fun! Good use of physics and good application of the theme.

mazzletov 2018-08-12 21:39

@ticklemecolor You can rotate with right click(holding) and dragging to access the hidden parts. Hope this helps? :)Thanks for playing

gilgusmaximus 2018-08-12 22:10

It is truly amazing and a lot of fun. But the web application does crash sometimes, and the check whether a evel dropped out of the world, does not work in 100% of the time. But otherwise amazing; would buy lootboxes :D

m8rix 2018-08-12 23:15

Cool concept. But pretty hard. Love the urban atmosphere.

tuism 2018-08-12 23:42

Man, I really wish this was all I wanted it to be... GREAT presentation. It looks good, and it sounds good. SimCity 2000 esque in the best way. But...

1. The placement - The mouse pointer should dictate exactly where to put a building. Right now not being able to place where I want to place a building is a huge frustration. The pointer should only interact with the base square of a building space. 2. Controls - I went back to the page to read about camera controls - those things should be on-screen, because why not? Also the camera shouldn't be able to look up/down? I don't see much benefit in that other than being frustrating. 3. Not knowing what next piece I'm going to get is... unfair? In a game where planning is being promoted? And I'm not just talking about the building, but the next ground/level piece. 4. The lining up of pieces - After level 1, I couldn't tell how the building I'm supposed to place lines up with buildings under them. 5. There seem to be too many spaces I want to put into/onto but can't. There doens't seem to be rhyme or reason as to where they can/can't go down? 6. Combo system? Can't tell how that works.

Really like the idea, I love city builders, and hope to see this evolve :P

mazzletov 2018-08-13 05:29

@gilgusmaximus Thanks, the web build is certainly not the most optimal build. I worked on a little feedback to let the Player know if a block has fallen out of the world, but scrapped it at the last moment. I should have implement some sort of UI element, or camera shake.

mazzletov 2018-08-13 05:29

@m8rix thanks for the feedback! I will try to play your game.

mazzletov 2018-08-13 05:29

@tuism Thank you for this constructive feedback. If you place a building on a spot, you can never build another piece on this spot. This was to prevent to keep spamming buildings and keep trying. I should have implement some small feedback for the next ground/level piece, as it was already in the code. If you place consecutive pieces within a time frame of 3 seconds, you build up a combo multiplier. This is a multiplier added on top of your score. If you fail to build a piece within a 3 seconds timeframe, the combo multiplier will be reset to 1. This is to encourage the player to build as fast as possible, but this also increases the chance of tipping over of your construction. I'm not a very skilled UI designer, so it was very time consuming to obtain a "speedy" combo train effect going.

mazzletov 2018-08-13 05:29

(can't delete a duplicate of comment)

endurion 2018-08-13 06:49

Very good idea and solid presentation! :)

The putting part is a bit weird, but mostly does what I want it to. Really a great entry!

Love the game over message ;)

ghen 2018-08-13 06:56

unique take of the theme, extremely hard tho, very unpredictable, but well done nontheless, i love the clean minimalistic graphic

reimari 2018-08-13 06:58

Already liked it the moment I saw the thumbnail, and the actual game didn't disappoint. The only thing I didn't like was where the mouse is vs where a building is actually placed.

arthridas 2018-08-13 07:12

Really cool game! Love that you are running out space but making more space at the same time.

mazzletov 2018-08-13 07:15

@reimari@endurion I had a correction system in place but it was kind of quirky and unstable. I also like that you don't know exactly where it's going to be placed to make it harder!

@ghen Thanks man! Sometimes you can get pretty high with a bit of luck.

@arthridas Haha yes!

ravenflame 2018-08-13 07:18

Strong idea, camera sort of lost the run of itself around level 7 or 8. I couldn't see the ground to place the towers and then on the next level I think the camera shot off into the sky. It would be great to know what base is coming next so you could plan your city to match it.

firehawk 2018-08-13 07:23

The theme is impressive :). I really like the simple but beautiful graphics. Also the game is quite challenging, which is good for this sort of games. Keep going !

elenesski 2018-08-13 07:33

first it was really great little game and neat spin on the theme ... i found it hard too hard to place the next level of city streets ... where I thought I was placing them was not where it ended up, and I found that to be kind of frustrating.

marcel-oyuela-bonzani 2018-08-13 07:57

Super cool concept! Would love to see an expanded version with just a little more polish on building placement.

mazzletov 2018-08-13 08:07

@ravenflame it was hard to get a grip on the Camera as it sometimes looks it has a life on it's own  @firehawk @elenesski The placement of the next base/level needs more polishing @marcel-oyuela-bonzani After one weekend of coding, I'm going to take a coding break for a week hehe

erendelous 2018-08-13 08:32

It's reallu nice game! I'm not really sure about the "running out of space" thing, but, ayway, great job:)

mazzletov 2018-08-13 08:40

@erendelous; the city is running out of space and therefore they have the ridiculous idea of building vertically. Thanks for playing/rating!

anstabo 2018-08-13 09:21

It's a bit hard to understand how it should be played but it's fun and a refreshing new style of game. Keep it up !!!

borys 2018-08-13 12:18

Wow, I think I never saw this idea in any other game. I really like sounds effects and graphics too. Nice job!!

mazzletov 2018-08-13 12:24

@anstabo @borys haha thanks!

rumor 2018-08-13 12:28

I had a really hard time getting any higher than level 3 or so. Dropping a new layer seems to be the hardest part for me, since it's very unclear where it's going to end up. When it works and I can actually pull off the placements I'm trying for it's really fun though!

eric-kulbiej 2018-08-13 13:16

Nice game, enjoyed it very much. Keep it up!

evanm 2018-08-13 14:09

This was really really fun! I couldn't place the buildings exactly how I wanted them though

king-kujito 2018-08-13 15:53

Gameplay needs some polish. The sound, graphics and concept are solid though.

doey 2018-08-13 17:12

Nice concept but turning the camera feels a little too clunky. The gameplay is pretty difficult, but in a fun way, and the physics are a really fun element. A pretty fun game, nice job!

reuno 2018-08-14 02:53

"Thanks we all died". Brilliant. I think the physics were a bit off sometimes, but that's a very funny idea, and well executed!

ittinop 2018-08-14 04:47

Great concept, sound, and graphics! Kind of wish gameplay is less dependent on RNG and more on planning though.

sgtweirdo 2018-08-14 11:23

The design is really pretty! Simplistic, colours work well, looks great! The gameplay is overall good the only problem being the camera rotation difficulty. Great job! Thanks for making this game! :ok_hand:

notime4name 2018-08-14 11:29

really hard, simple design, fitting audio effects, although no music (sadface.png) and suiting graphics, solid game there!

plusminus 2018-08-14 11:32

looks cool, but in reality too hard for casual game. better curve would be nice.

arqcenick 2018-08-14 11:38

I really liked the simple idea, its novel and fun to play. The graphics are nice and I kept playing as I loved the challenge the game provided. However the mouse controls are bit wonky and caused a lot of misclicks. But this is a very good game for a jam! Keep up good work.

nerobius 2018-08-14 12:05

Great work, good concept. Camera control needs a bit of work however.

tetra 2018-08-14 12:39

This was a unique take on the theme I think. The graphics were very nice, it was only later I saw I could rotate the camera. I would have liked to have seen a pre-placement highlight or similar, as well as a 'next building' preview but the theme as a whole holds up and it's satisfying to grow your jenga city.

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/296991095## gameplay at 24:50 (sorry, forgot to resize the screen for this!)

artem-sinica 2018-08-14 12:39

It looks soooo awesome. Great design and nice idea for game! Gj!

flower 2018-08-14 12:42

Very cool!)

mowztouch 2018-08-14 12:43

Hey you made something good here! Concept is innovative. Very hard after the 3rd floor :) If you continue the dev, i would like to see a projection of where i drop the next floor. Very good entry!

mazzletov 2018-08-14 13:14

@mowztouch @artem-sinica thanks for playing! I ran short of time to implement some sort of indication where it would be placed but this was unchartered territory to use a shader for this.

starvingindie 2018-08-14 16:29

This was a fun jenga type game. Trying to build a house of cards is always fun. The graphics and presentation are very clean. Everything felt responsive and nice. Great work.

My bit of feedback: Kind of like tetris, it might be nice to have a preview of the the upcoming level or building that you will be able to place next. The player can perhaps strategize the best way to move forward.

All in all, a good time. Great work!

mobiusdisco 2018-08-14 16:41

the concept is 10/10 for me and the execution is beautiful, would really love to see a version on mobile or steam!

historymaker118 2018-08-14 17:49

I enjoyed this game, though I was really bad at it. Fun concept, well executed. I wasn't a huge fan of the ambient sounds, but they fitted the theme of you game. The models are very good and the whole thing has a nice polished feel. Good job.

tgb20 2018-08-14 19:35

Fun game. Steep learning curve. While I was awful at the game it worked great.

krasse 2018-08-14 19:56

Thanks! I killed them all every time, and they were sarcastic. Very bad cityplanning game was very fun

digitaldude555 2018-08-14 20:04

I'm also gonna say the concept/idea behind this game is very interesting, could be a good casual mobile game. I agree with the guy that said we need to know which piece comes next so we can plan it out, I never made it past the 3rd floor the tile would always fall off. Anyway I like the clean design of the buildings and the crowd sound effects are pretty funny. Good effort.

sawtan 2018-08-14 20:15

Hehe such a nice take on the ol' city planner genre, I was a pretty lousy mayor from the get go, tried to play it smart but the game beat me each time, harder than the previous play through, guess I should stick with programming and put my mayor dreams behind ;) Cheerz!

mero 2018-08-14 22:06

It looks fun but its too hard for me i cant do much here ;_;

rangoiv 2018-08-14 22:48

Frustrating but funny lol

yami-no-tenshi-8 2018-08-15 00:07

I love the idea and concept ! It totally matches the theme ! The camera control is a bit hard to handle.

What would be really helpful is knowing how big will be the next level and eventually what will be the shape of the next building.

kunonooni 2018-08-15 02:23

I laughed so much while playing this game. what a great idea for the theme. Congrats on completing your game.

jin9310 2018-08-15 04:27

This is very nice and can be very addictive. At least I wanted to get higher and higher! Great work!

ossi 2018-08-15 07:13

That was a very funny game! Sleek graphical presentation and very amusing mechanic! I found it really difficult to place buildings down when I made it to the 3rd level. When things topple over it makes it very difficult to know exactly where you can place things. Other than that this was a really cool game, great work!

sharky3188 2018-08-15 07:33

Cool idea, got really hard really fast. Some of the placement mechanics felt a little bit off, but they may just be because of the browser version. Nice and clean art, and fun to see everything turn to mayhem.

bradleypollard 2018-08-15 07:52

Love the way it looks, really pretty. Fits the theme really well too. I found it hard to understand why you might want to go to the next level before placing all the buildings, and placing the level it seemed like I was unable to directly line it up with the old grid so it would always be off balance (maybe this is by design!) Good game though.

awix 2018-08-15 07:58

A good game idea, the music should be improved. The graphics are good. Try our game too, maybe you'll like it)

rawrasaur 2018-08-15 08:16

Very funny. Love the reactive audio when you succeed or fail and the jenga style defeat. I did find it a bit weird when the base block fell off and I could still place buildings in mid air though! haha

bungalow 2018-08-15 08:46

Hard but fun, simple art style but effective, Couldn't have asked for a better game. Even more impressive considering it's a compo game! Great job and good luck with future titles! :)

truc-e 2018-08-15 10:56

The graphics and sound are amazingly impressive. The gameplay is really unique too but I it was hard to tell if it was ever working right.

donitz 2018-08-15 14:03

Cool concept! The 3d models look fantastic due to the small details. The gameplay is rather difficult and once things go south there is not much you can do to save it, but that's part of the charm.

The placement position is somewhat unreliable and I can't quite figure out what exactly is used to determine which tile is hovered. Some type subtle wireframe grid of the hover locations might have made it clearer.

chocolat-endive 2018-08-15 15:56

The concept is really well, but the size of the "boards" is random, so sometimes it is impossible to make more than 2 or 3 floors. There is some little bugs with the camera. It's really interesting, and i'd like to see a more "complete" version of this game (maybe with some ambiant music?)!

The idea is really really nice, I love the bonus/multiplier with the time, it makes me want to build everything "too fast", and it makes me lose, it's perfect!

2018-08-15 16:22

Nice graphics, fun game! I included it in my compilation video series of the Ludum Dare 42 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/M4_JaetxhkY

hugimugi7 2018-08-15 16:47

Very nice and unique game!

Would have definitely needed more depth (like more houses, modes etc..)

mike-inprinciple 2018-08-15 23:12

I couldn't grasp the controls for a while during my play time. This led to numerous failures that were not enjoyable, because I thought them unfair. Then I read your description and learnt that you can rotate and go up and down with the right mouse click. That changed things, but it was too late for me, my good will towards the game had dissipated. I would recommend you add the controls in the blue space within you game. There seems to be plenty of space for you to fit instructions there.

eoku 2018-08-15 23:53

Love it!

jamesolivermusic 2018-08-16 18:38

Nice one! I would have liked the ability to place buildings behind ones I already placed, or to be able to rotate the camera, unless I missed this feature. Very fun game that matched the theme well.

mazzletov 2018-08-16 20:06

@jamesolivermusic haha yes, right click and dragging just did that. Thank for playing!

grahhhhhhhhh 2018-08-17 01:09

LOL! Thanks we all died! I love the idea, it was tough for me and I let a lot of people died, its really quizical to me how the GIF above you were able to stack so nicely! Nice take on the theme, I was just reading about vertical farming, and upwards is the way to go!

devio 2018-08-17 12:33

Fun little game, Streight to the point and overall fun to play. Nice graphics and nice feel to the overall game. Well done!

carlos-giraldo 2018-08-19 09:06

Really cool idea and artstyle. Though I had a difficult time simply trying to place the buildings where I wanted them too. Feels a little too random. Overall... its still solid entry for me.

tomeks 2018-08-19 14:46

What an amazing idea you have here. Enjoyed playing it. Loved the sounds. Well done.

shrekshao 2018-08-19 19:22

Ah since I was also making a sim city sort of style game, it's really great to see something like this. When thinking about expanding the city horizontally, the first thing came to my mind was https://store.steampowered.com/app/416210/Blockhood/ . Where you make some modularization system for the building blocks and every of them can connect and build top of each other and create some effects and combo. I think that would help making the physics system more fun. (Though this might be far beyond a compo game hhhh)

abhis1kadian 2018-08-19 20:58

@mazzletov A very amazing game u got there. Loved the visuals as well as the gameplay. Nice implementation of the theme.

saoi-games 2018-08-20 04:31

Thank you for sharing your game with me. I played it on my stream tonight at https://www.twitch.tv/saoigames

I have rated your game, but all of my feedback was captured in the stream. IT was close to the beginning of my stream.

You can hear my comments in the archive at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/299357576?t=01h01m56s

mazzletov 2018-08-20 05:57

@shrekshao that's really cool. Didn't know the game yet! @saoi-games Thanks for playing. You also played my previous entry in LD41 so I'll definetly keep an eye on your stream sometimes!

ytaha 2018-08-20 08:04

Great game, placing buildings is a bit hard, and it needs some optimization (i played this in my notebook) but other than that, a sweet look to the theme. Keep up the good work

shakedimus 2018-08-20 09:10

Nice concept, at first I thought it was tedious but I really wanted to get a better score! Sometimes it was a bit unclear where the next level would be placed. Nice game overall!

kaiomoi 2018-08-20 13:36

Really nice work. Game is funny to play. It is a little difficult to know where we will have the new plateau (on the building) the shadow is misleading I think.

andaron-noob 2018-08-21 04:33

VERY well done.

riccardo-sioni 2018-08-21 06:56

What a clever idea! I especially liked the sound effects and the cohesive visual style of the game. Great work!

stefan-jovanovic 2018-08-21 21:32

Really nice balancing/strategy game! Keep up the good work!

draeskai 2018-08-22 22:52

Really original and well done!

wiredoverload 2018-08-23 02:16

This is a pretty good game that definitely does fit the theme in the sense that as you go up you get less space to place your towers on and you have to choose what type of buildings you have to place your next platform on. Unfortunately for this game, because some parts of the game are very well polished, the unpolished parts really stick out. The title screen, general art and UI look great, the player is able to rotate the camera, and in general the physics behave like you would expect them to; however the fact that the main mechanic of the game, placing buildings, can be very difficult to can lead to an overall frustrating experience. Having the building placement be a bit finicky is fine as it is for a game jam, but the fact there is a time based combo bar and not a ton of room for error means that that one problem becomes a bigger issue than it would otherwise have been. It's worth noting that I was playing the web build, so that might just be a result of that. Overall great game though!

ajay-2002 2018-08-24 09:13

Pretty awesome game and addictive, just how did you come up with this concept, it's really creative and when I first played it, I was like wtf huh - how do people come up with this  . But very solid entry, 10/10 good job

lensflare 2018-08-26 12:08

Love it! Great idea!

dev-for-pizza 2018-09-04 09:19

Really cool concept, One of the best game in this ludum, Good Job !!

2022-02-08 19:38

I think this is just a great idea. You always spend your time laughing. You can compete with your friends and try to build the tallest building. I also really like the animation in this game. It seems to me that this is a wonderful educational game that shows how much you need to be a professional in order to know how to put a building so that it is tall and stable. You just turn into real professionals in your field, like https://contractorfinder.noritz.com/contractors, but only in the game. Exciting.
