LD36 — Ancient Technology

Imphenzia_AncientTechToReturn by imphenzia 2016-09-03T16:50:00

At the first sight of your game name and the screenshot that a man is seemingly lost in a forest,I thought it would be a game about throwing bread crumbs to leave trace or put mark on the trees to prevent from getting lost and help find the way home...While after playing the game,I found I was wrong.Anyway, I think it still a good LD work, considering how limited your time is.The graphics looks lovely and the idea of taking and putting things in different boxes is interesting. Moreover how strict you are with your time and how caring you are about your family impresses me, it seems that you are both a good game developer and a good father. The game has little difficulty, and the used time is the only feedback that player can get from the challenge, and personally I think that feedback is not enough to motivate me to play the game once more. However, given more time, I believe u can make it better.
All in all, good Job! And if it's convenient for u, please have a try with my game.

Avastory by Devark 2016-09-03T17:16:00

I love this 2D platform shooting game, it's somewhat like my favorite 2D online game MapleStory~ Although it seems that the game graphics has only used two to three colors, the game looks vivid, the hero is cute, the monsters or say the birds are cute too! And the note on a locked door saying that it's locked because of the developer 's time constraint has made me laugh out ^__^ eh...some of small monsters' AI seems a little stupid, while the BOSS is a little challenging to me, I think that's great. But after I won the BOSS,I hadn't seen any ending, does your game have an ending? hum..Maybe it's another result of the developer's time constraint I suppose.
By the way, if it is convenient for you, please also have a try with my game:

LittleCopter by atom0520 2016-09-08T01:17:00

@joemid The purpose of putting an airplane there is to make the openning scene appear not dull, and the airplane is also the one that gives the little bamboo-copter the hint to fly up high at the very beginning,so I place the little copter together with it initially. Thx for your feedback anyway :)

LD42 — Running out of space

Paradise Inc by Criobite 2018-09-02T19:00:11Z

It's interesting that we both chose the topic of overpopulation crisis but thought about different solutions and made games in completely different styles. I really like the cinematic feel in your game and I think the game story is quite thought-provoking. IMO the Paradise can refer to many things such as Virtual Reality Technology and immigrant countries. I wonder what you really want to convey. Moreover I think it would be better if you can reveal more information about why people transfered to the Paradise feel regret. However it's already impressive enough considering you've made such an engaging storyline in such a short time. Good work!

What's in the crates ?! by LooksLikeSomething 2018-09-02T21:12:34Z

The gameplay is very interesting and the hand-drawn art style looks very cute. The drop down lists in the sell crates panel break the consistency of art style but it's no big deal. It would be better if there are some labels help explain the circle symbols in the mini-map, although it's not hard to figure out what they mean with a few attempts. Moreover I wonder why the trucks have to take a long detour from Town Three to Home, maybe it's for making the difficulties of sending crates to different towns different but it feels a little weird.

Overall it's a cute game with very interesting gameplay. Good job! And I would appreciate it if you can also give my game a try.

There’s No Place Like Home by Dubgron 2018-09-02T18:00:00Z

Your game is challenging to me. The asteroids speed up so fast while the character acceleration is too small which makes it almost impossible to dodge the asteroids. Maybe you can make asteroids move in a constant slow speed and increase the difficulty by gradually increasing the size and density of asteroids.

Besides I think the width of texts at the beginning should be fit the viewport size and in my browser part of texts went out of viewport (I tried the web version). Moreover I don't know what's the purpose of "magic". It seems it doesn't do any help except that it can let me see some star patterns. They look quite interesting though.

Anyway it's a complete game for COMBO and the sprites look nice. Good work!

Dark plague by geck0 2018-08-19T02:01:00Z

I agree with your girlfriend, your game is challenging and I cannot beat your highest score. The game is also interesting and fits the theme. Good job!

Dilan vs. Trees by the-tophat-demon 2018-09-03T04:54:58Z

I think your game is awesome! Nice pixel arts, nice audio, and also nice gameplay. The trees are quite dense and the burned down trees can be respawned quickly, which prevents me from moving freely and does often make me feel kind of "out of space". One thing I notice is that I can make my friend get fired but my friend wouldn't make any response to the fire. I understand that my friend can't be burned to death in this game but you can let them make some sounds or complaints when getting fired, and that would be more interesting. However that's completely optional and overall I think you did an amazing work since you only took 48 hours to make such a complete and decent-looking game.

Stardust by ohmmus 2018-09-03T02:23:40Z

Although the graphics in your game are very simple, the core gameplay is quite fun and fits the theme. The audio and the asteroid particles are also cool. And the interation in the home menu is very interesting and I do like it. Overall it's a fun and cool game for compo. Good job!

Blowup by Gildar76 2018-09-03T01:17:48Z

The graphics look simple and neat. The audio is also good. I like the camera shake effect you made as well as the blinking and shinning effects you put on the bricks and ball, which look very cool. However the game viewport didn't fit my browser window size and I have to use sliders to see every corner of the game view. I don't know if this problem is due to your canvas settings in Unity or the website that hosts your game. Moreover sometimes the ball can bypass some bricks without eliminating them, and I don't know if it's part of the gameplay or just a bug.

Overall it's a well-made game considering you initially wanted to take a compo and made all the game assets by yourself in only a few days. Well done!

Roguenoc by gustavo.christino 2018-09-03T17:10:12Z

The maze looks nice and the BGM creates a mysterious atmosphere, which is great. However I notice that I can often go through walls when pressing the Accelerate key. Although I can be sent back inside the maze after I bypass walls, it looks werid. I find that red mushrooms can make you grow bigger and blue mushrooms can cure your abnormal state, but what about yellow mushrooms? I think it would be better if you can give some explanations on the effects of each kind of mushrooms. I like the design that player would get bigger and bigger after eating a red mushroom and finally get too heavy to jump and stuck in a room, is that how you interpret the theme? I think you may also consider shrink the maze room once player touches some switches to highlight the theme. Overall it's a complete jam game and has the potential to be a very fun one. Keep up your work!

Roguenoc by gustavo.christino 2018-09-03T18:24:43Z

@gustavo-christino I see. With some AI enemies in maze, the game would be more exciting. Hope you can make the diary in English. Keep up your good work!

DE/VOID by randomphantom 2018-09-03T16:16:10Z

Really cool and fun. The graphics look good and the audio is also great. The game well interprets the theme and the gameplay is very interesting with the use of physics. It's amazing that you could make more than 30 levels in such a short time while each level has its unique mechanics. Really impressive!

Attack of the Void! by rubr 2018-09-03T18:19:05Z

It's a very interesting turn-based strategy game. The pixel arts are amazing, especially the reactor, it's so cute! I don't think it's tightly related to the theme as I don't feel quite "out of space" when I play, but I do often feel "out of resources". Moreover I don't feel motivated to upgrade the base level, as it seems to do no help to my defence or attack. Maybe you can make some rules to motivate player to upgrade their base level like player needs to upgrade the base to a specific level to win or the high level base can provide some special resources. Anyway it's a very fun game and I think it would be better if you can add some audio later. Good work!

Mouse Trap! by Krooked590 2018-09-03T02:57:55Z

The pixel sprites look cute. The audio sound cute. The button and text animations in the menu also look cute! Although you said your game is like Pac-Man but the "shrinking room" mechanism makes the gameplay very different from Pac-Man. IMO your game is more about choosing the right path to avoid getting tracked. The enemies are easy to deal with as they don't have chase AI, which makes sense in your case as the maze and shrinking room already make your game a little tricky.

Overall I think your game is fun and cute. Well done! And I would appreciate it if you can also give my game a try!

Pizza Defender by Sloyd 2018-09-02T19:24:49Z

The pixel sprites and animations look amazing! That the pizza shrinks bite by bite is very interesting and also well fit the theme. I wonder how you implemented the way that pizza shrinks. Moreover I think you can add some audio to the game to make the game feel more funny and humorous. Different bullets (like ketchup sauce beam) or bullet hits effects can also be added but they are optional. Overall it's a very cute and well-put-together game and I always like cute games! :smiley_cat:

Pizza Defender by Sloyd 2018-09-03T06:15:01Z

@sloyd Thank you for your explanation! That's a very good technique. Looking forward to your updates!

Zero Star by CristiHKJ 2018-09-02T20:23:27Z

The models look great, and the missile movement is also interesting. Although the BGM is just a looping short tune it does provide a sense of humor. Besides I think you can make the Mother Ship a lttle further away from the flight as at the beginning they made me suppose they are sort of related or combined. Moreover I found the missiles seem to do no harm to me and I can just keep pressing the Space key while ignoring all the incoming missiles to win the game.

Overall it's a fun "Shoot and Dodge" game! And I would appreciate it if you can also play mine.

Quibble Quarrel by TJ101010 2018-09-02T19:49:08Z

It's really amazing that you can make all these graphics, animations, audio as well as the whole game in such a short time! The game is fun and also fit the theme. The menu BGM might sound a little soft but overall it's a well-put-together game!

Amistad by Raphael Maia 2018-09-03T20:10:44Z

It's a very fun game. The gameplay well fits the theme. The hand-drawn art style looks sort of humorous. It would be better if you can add some audio. It's sad that the poor smuggler would always get nothing at the end as the clients would become more and more impatient and take all the money back. Maybe you can consider limiting the game time while keeping the client waiting time constant (or set a lowerbound). And player would aim for higher money rather than longer survival time. In that case life would be much easier for the smuggler. However overall I think you made a very fun game in a very limited time. Good job!

Planet 'O' by Nehal 2018-09-02T18:25:52Z

Your game well fit the theme and the graphics look very nice! However I think the mini-map can be zoomed out a little bit and a player location symbol can be added in the mini-map.

Relentless Siberia by lazarche 2018-09-04T14:19:08Z

@lonazen Very fun game! It reminds me of some survival games like Don't Starve. The pixel arts look nice. The audio is also good. The blocking snow and limited inventory space sort of fit the theme. The map is big I like the design that I can enter the interior of each house. There is an issue that everytime I die and restart the game, the items in my inventory would not disappear. I don't know if it's a bug or is done on purpose, but then when I die again with some items in inventory, a fatal error message window would pop up. I also notice that some snow in the map is part of the background and cannot be removed, and I think they are sometimes distracting. I also hope you can give some explanations on how to make a camp fire using logs as I still don't know how to do that.

However overall it's a very interesting game. It's awesome that you could make such a big map and so many items in the limited time. Good work!

Relentless Siberia by lazarche 2018-09-04T22:59:49Z

@lonazen Oh I see the explanation of making camp fire now. Sorry for my oversight. I didn't expect there's also an easter egg hidden in the map. That's very interesting. Keep up your good work!

Starship Panic by Evelyn Hagan 2018-09-04T00:01:58Z

It's a very fun game and also well fits the theme. The graphics look cute and the audio is also cool. However I notice that the only way to lose the game is to get hit by debris while the debris would never be spawned inside the airlock, which allows me to just stay inside the airlock all the time to complete all the levels. I think maybe you can prevent player from entering the airlock and only allow player to put debris into the airlock from the outside, just as player should do in the guide level. Moreover I don't think it necessary to let player go through the guide level everytime they start the game. You can make another option in the home menu or let player go through the guide only once.

However overall it's a well-put-together game and it's commendable that you could complete it in only 48 hours. Good job!

SHOOTER 3D by prajwal 2018-09-03T05:54:01Z

Congratulations on your first 3D game! It's a well put-together game with some tense feels. However I notice that most objects in the game are 2D textures, so maybe you can try using some 3D models next time. The gun is not aligned with the crosshair although it doesn't affect the gameplay. The bullet seems to be a 2D texture aiming at wrong direction. I think there are still many improvements you can make. However overall it's a good start of your 3D game development journey! Good job!

Poisoned Palace by jordantanner 2018-09-02T17:24:39Z

Very cool skills and effects! The increasing difficulty and no exit made me feel tense and hopeless when playing. It's a very fun game!

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-08-19T15:48:09Z

@astralore Thank you for playing my game! I find your advices quite helpful! :) I would consider hosting my game on itch.io after making some modifications. I will also increase the initial number of people and give player some special abilities like imposing one-child policy and giving away free condoms to make the game difficulty more consistent throughout the entire game.

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-08-22T05:25:48Z

@glock00 Thank you for your advice! It makes sense. The word “eliminating” does sound a little radical. Although I just wrote that word in a playful way, I think I'd better take it off in case it might irritate some people that do care.

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-08-22T05:56:08Z

@konsumopfer77 Thank you for your review! Your thought is interesting! It's possible that some homosexuals do want to get kids by either adoption or resorting to sperm banks. However I think either way homosexuals cannot produce kids by themselves, and they always need at least one person of another gender to produce kids for or with them. Therefore if we can make a world with no man or no woman, then nobody can produce or have kids any more even if some homos may still want to. However I'm not sure if that situation would make human beings evolve to get the Asexual Reproduction ability. If that's the case, our world would be hopeless. >_<

As for the bug, I developed this game using my win10 laptop, and the game runs properly on my laptop. However since I'm not an expert on Unreal Engine, I'm not sure if I have overlooked something that might cause the issue on your friend's laptop. I feel very sorry for that and would let you know if I find the reason later.

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-09-02T16:26:31Z

@leave Thank you for your review! I didn't include the source code because I didn't join the COMPO. But I'm fine with being open-source so I've added the source code link. As for the gravity, my solution is to adjust the actor's rotation and apply a gravity force towards the planet center every frame, and once the actor reaches the ground reduce the speed in the gravity direction to zero. Moreover I feel sorry for the game size and I'm still quite new to Unreal Engine. I have excluded the starter content but I didn't know there're still things that can be removed inside the build files. I'll try that later and thank you very much for your advice!

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-09-02T20:32:47Z

@jordantanner Thank you for your playing! The game is just a joke. I mean no offence to heterosexuals. Just to promote some population awareness.

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-09-03T01:24:33Z

@fernando-tonon-de-rossi Maybe it's the space star skybox that makes you get that feel.

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-09-03T01:58:27Z

@ohmmus Thank you for playing my game! I'm happy to hear that my game feels fun to you and makes you smile!

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-09-03T04:00:44Z

@the-tophat-demon Thank you for your review and suggestions! I think the motion blur might have something to do with the camera rotation. I'm considering if it would feel better if I disable the camera rotation or reduce the camera rotation sensitivity. I will try them later. I also like the feeling of walking on a spherical ground and actually that's what I implemented first in this game. But for the performance issue, I would also make the planet much bigger, and that would be even more interesting as then you would feel you are walking on a endless planar surface just like how you feel when walking on earth. Hope you can take some inspirations and come up with something more interesting and innovative in your future creation!

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-09-03T06:39:47Z

@prajwal Thank you for playing my game! I'm glad you like it. Hope my game wouldn't mislead you. Good luck!

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-09-03T14:54:54Z

@randomphantom Thank you for playing my game! Your feedback reminds me that I should have given some explanation on how humans transform. Actually each human would take the same number of seconds to grow up (transform from small to big) and humans can only bear children when they are grown-up. Your understanding of the game is correct, the game is bascically about resigning everybody's gender to the same (an extreme way to solve overpopulation). You may find hard to aim at a moving human or a human hiding in the crowd, and that's kind of the point. Naughty humans are easier to cope with when they are standing still or when their population is sparser.

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-09-03T14:59:29Z

@cristihkj Thank you for playing my game! I'm glad you like it. Just keep up your rules until our planet runs out of space.

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-09-03T19:11:22Z

@gustavo-christino Thank you very much for your detailed review! I really like the idea of multiple plannets, (although I think I'm not gonna make a MMO based on this game XD) and I think a game including multiple planets which you can invade and walk around on would be very interesting. The powerup is also a good idea which may require me to think about what kind of object in reality can be put into this game as a powerup. Unreal games generally have bigger sizes, which are not very suitable for mobile devices. But if I can further reduce the game size and optimize the code to get a more stable FPS, maybe I would consider porting the game to mobile platforms later. Anyway thank you for all your analysis and suggestions!

Homos Save the World by atom0520 2018-09-03T19:22:43Z

@sambi Haha don't worry. It's a LGBT friendly game. It's also a heterosexual friendly game as no one forces you to be a world-saving hero. You can either make a gay planet or a lesbian one, or just be a good heterosexual and watch our world go out of space with your loved one(s).

Space Defender 2000 by Sambi 2018-09-03T20:52:24Z

It's a fun space shooting game. I especially like the pixel animations and effects in your game such as the shining star sky, the glowing planet on the top right corner (is that the sun?), the cute shooting animation, and the shape morphing animations of enemy planets. I wonder how you made those animations as some of them are not like frame animations. The huge planets look quite exciting. However I notice that there is no hit effect when the bullet hits a huge planet although the bullet can cause damage. Another obvious issue is control, I notice that sometimes some direction keys would not work, and this issue always made me lose the game. Besides the control issue, I think your game is quite fun to play, and overall I think you did great job in this game jam!

Space Defender 2000 by Sambi 2018-09-04T14:57:35Z

@sambi Thank you for the explanation! The scaling and rotating animations look quite well. The control bug might be related to web player or browser. Good luck!

Crowded Prison by Fernando Tonon de Rossi 2018-09-03T01:51:34Z

It's commendable that you made all the game assets by yourself and the pixel sprites and animations look cute. However I think the game can give players more ways of playing (like driving out all the people in a room to get a private room) other than just killing everybody. Moreover I think the corpses should never occlude characters and you'd better render the corpses sprites behind any character. Anyway it's still a complete COMPO game. Good work!

ECO WARRIORS by FreeLivesGames 2018-08-19T03:14:47Z

The game is made very elaborately and the graphics and animations look very cool. I like the way you use those interesting dialogues to move the game forward, and many dialogues are quite humorous. One imperfection is that the core gameplay is pretty much a third person shooting game, which is not very related to the theme. However it's still an awesome game, and I really look forward to the dophin allies in your later updated versions.

Slay The Slime - Too Much Loot by Virtu 2018-08-19T01:17:20Z

The gameplay is interesting. The animations and graphics loook good. The music creates a little tense atmosphere, which is suitable for your game. No potion that can heal player is strange, however make player restore some health after slaying each slime alleviate that problem a bit. Moreover I think it would be better if player's performance can be measured by some scores or levels, otherwise the game looks like endless and gives no feedback on how well players play.

JumpArround by Leave 2018-09-02T16:56:51Z

The graphics and audio in your game are great, especially considering you made them all by yourself. But as other players, I think the jumping is tricky and I can only reach a few branches. I don't know if there's anything more exciting in the higher area and I think you can record a video to show the whole game process (if you can reach the top by yourself). Or maybe you can make the first stage - climbing tree - easier by increasing the size or density of branches so that poor jumpers like me would not get stuck at the very beginning. However in general it's still a well-put-together game. Good job!

Astrum Dare by Astralore 2018-08-20T03:37:40Z

The graphics, animations, dialogues, audios are all awesome! I like the design that player can move the view a little bit when in dialogues. The protocal puzzles are interesting and also fit the theme. I have tried the protocal puzzles for several times, as I really want to rescue more characters at length. However each time I tried I could only solve the last puzzle, and I wonder if there exist solutions for the first two puzzles.

On the whole it's a very impressive game. Good job!
