I tried twice and couldn't beat the boss. For having no save points and no other combat, the boss is a bit too hard.

The art and music were solid, it felt like a black-and-white Cave Story.

Hi, nice game and congratulations ! Simple mechanics that still offered a decent amount of challenge. We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #36. We made the same thing at the previous jam.

Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description. (you can already find several games from the jam there)

The audiovisuals are great, but the interactions and mechanics are not that interesting. It is just walking, talking and a boss fight. No exploration or meaningful interactivity.

The boss at least is sufficiently challenging, but after beating it there's no way out of the room. Not sure if that is where you ran out of time or just a bug. Some kind of conclusion after all that walking and talking would have been nice.

Wow, it feels like a platforming demake of Undertale, very cool! Didn't manage to kill Mokitori after 3 attempts and felt too lazy to walk all over the game again. There is much more content after Mokitori?

Streamed this game last night on Twitch and found it enjoyable. Our instinct was too shoot the poor little guys and then complain about their lack of fighting abilities... before we realised we could talk to them :D Wished there was a true pacifist ending or any sort of outro and would have liked to know more about the mysterious Ava stones ;) Good job, would play more.

After Momotori, I wasn't able to interact with either of the doors. It didn't seem intentional, because the game was also lagging quite a lot.

Maybe I'll give this another shot later, it reminded me of mid-game Undertale slightly, and I'd like to see what you have in store.

It looks like it wants to be a Metroidvania, with an interesting backstory. Nice art and music, for sure. The boss was reasonably challenging, although I was bummed it ended right there. Or at least, I couldn't get out of the room. Still, it has quite a lot of promise if you plan on finishing it.

@justinooncx, yeah ... I pretty much did this solo except for the music so unfortunately there isn't enough content to make the narrative meaningful yet (I just didn't have enough time). I really underestimated how long it takes simply create levels...

@danae123, thanks so much! And thanks for the tweets! I couldn't find your twitch though, would love to see the vods!

@jwatt, I didn't have time to add anything after the boss battle... it wasn't the last thing i programmed so I had to go back and do everything else to make the game coherent and then I was out of time. The game was inspired by elements of Undertale, Cave Story and Iji (by Daniel Remar aka Ultimortal) as well as a little bit of Miyazaki's Laputa: Castle in the Sky (well originally it was anyway). I've never actually played metroid thoroughly haha. With anything narrative based though, there really isn't enough time in 3 days to create something people can empathise with and invest in deeply... Maybe something mechanics focussed would be better for a game jam, but I just want to make what I want to make haha.

And thank you everyone else for the all the feedback so far everyone!

Lovely graphics and music! I included it in my compilation video series of Ludum Dare 36 games, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/vrExnx4_kXk

downwell graphics and tight controls. well done

Wow, amazing submission! Pretty graphics style and dreamy music, well done! I had a good laugh about the library door :)

On my first pass I was all like "I don't want to hurt these lovely, peaceful creatures"! Why should I? Do they actually take damage if you... oh." I agree the boss fight was hard. Didn't make it in the first try. After that, I actually ran the whole way again without killing anything to see if the boss would be nice to me. Well... no ^_^ I wished you would have had more time to add content! Controls and mechanics feel pretty standard, a little more creativity wouldn't hurt there, I guess.

Possible bug: The pieces which remain when killing a creature flicker strangely.

I love this 2D platform shooting game, it's somewhat like my favorite 2D online game MapleStory~ Although it seems that the game graphics has only used two to three colors, the game looks vivid, the hero is cute, the monsters or say the birds are cute too! And the note on a locked door saying that it's locked because of the developer 's time constraint has made me laugh out ^__^ eh...some of small monsters' AI seems a little stupid, while the BOSS is a little challenging to me, I think that's great. But after I won the BOSS,I hadn't seen any ending, does your game have an ending? hum..Maybe it's another result of the developer's time constraint I suppose.
By the way, if it is convenient for you, please also have a try with my game:
