LD42 — Running out of space

King Midas by ded 2018-08-14T10:44:11Z

I like the idea and the art! But I keep barricading myself with treasures and don't know what to do then. I'm not sure if it's game over or if there is another level etc. In the full version, it would be nice if the game communicated with the player more, starting with something like a high score. And yeah, it would be nice to do something with all this gold!

Pole Volt by tacohej 2018-08-14T06:59:04Z

This is a pretty cool concept, and l like the simple cutesy visuals!

I'm not sure what the pole has to do with it, though, as the character does not seem to use it. Also, when I jump, there's an initial glitch before I fly off to space - not sure how to explain it other than a moment of jerkiness after which the character is teleported a few dozen pixels upwards and facing another way. This kinds of breaks the jump aesthetically.

Oh, and I got a meager 16,871 points.

Pole Volt by tacohej 2018-08-14T07:49:38Z

@tacohej Oh now it makes sense! I had the glitch when playing the HTML5 version in my browser.

Aura by Papaver 2018-08-14T07:10:28Z

This is a clever concept and a suprisingly effective mechanic for conveying it! The game was supper challenging for me, though. I died twice on the very edge of Level 3 and rage quit :)

Maybe it would be nice to make the starting point of each level a kind of safe space so that the player cannot be killed before they have even moved.

There also seems to be a bug: when another object keeps pushing into you, the lines like "I need more space" and "Please" replace one another in milliseconds so it's impossible to read them... and then you die:)

One more thing: I'm not sure how I feel about my sphere changing direction when bumped into. On the one hand, it helps to avoid walking into an object that's causing you damage. On the other hand, you momentarily lose control of the sphere, most likely resulting in walking into another danger...

But it's a fun game overall, and I'll probably return to it once I feel like playing something challenging.

Pamago by RoronoaCherry 2018-08-14T15:42:38Z

The graphics are gorgeous, and I really enjoyed the concept. I wish there were more levels, though, with more variety. Also, it would be nice if the game could somehow indicate when an object can be grabbed (I sometimes pressed space only to realize I wasn't close enough to an object to carry it). It would be cool if you would keep working on this.

The Flopp by Sanguis 2018-08-14T15:26:14Z

Nice! I really enjoyed the concept of loading parts of levels as you go, and the twist with running out of space is nicely implemented. The retro graphics look cool, too. My only quibble is that the jumping feels a bit jerky and not very smooth, although after a while I kind of got used to it.

Alternating Space by StateOff 2018-08-14T06:39:31Z

A nice minimalistic platformer with a clever mechanic! On Level 6, both of my characters got stuck in the green cloning spaces and couldn't get out (though I can't seem to replicate the issue after restarting the level). Otherwise, it's a very solid entry. as1.png

The Office Manager by Captain Nakou 2018-08-14T06:25:47Z

OMG, it's REAL TIME!

This game has the trappings of a potentially interesting spatial puzzle, but it just didn't give me enough feedback to understand if I was doing everything right. At one point, I was super happy and rich, a few days after continuing what I had assumed to be working, I suddenly had $500 and couldn't buy anything. Eventually, I went bankrupt and still was apparently 94% happy about it. I think some mechanism to highlight (and explain) good and bad decisions would be really helpful here.

Two more quibbles. One: because of the perspective, which I was not able to change, I had very little idea of the physical whereabouts of the particular office I was looking at in the bigger building. I'd suggest changing the camera angle to show more of the building and make the camera position adjustable. Two: the buttons (Build new office; Build a toilet; Build a rest area) seemed somewhat unrealiable and required multiple clickings. Maybe it's just Unity acting up on my old laptop.

Pig Pile by GreenBoxGames 2018-08-14T15:48:44Z

I loved the graphics and the gameplay was fun! Only two quibbles. First, I'm not sure about the control scheme (I personally would find the regular arrow keys+ZXC easier). Second, the game could use more variety (additional types of ammo, items like shields, enemy types) to prevent it from becoming repetitive. But for a jam entry, it's really nice and polished.

Invasion of The Jelly-Aliens by Cosdots_HM 2018-08-14T15:13:40Z

Very nice graphics and a goofy story reminding me of some Klik&Play games I used to play in the 1990s (in a good way). I like the levelling up mechanics, but the game is still quite difficult to play on a trackpad! I wish there were several lives (or at least the option to buy an extra life with your points), as it is quite frustrating to restart from the very beginning of the game.

Unfamiliar by Kovakomes 2018-08-14T11:25:24Z

Just a suggestion: maybe include a screenshot and a short description here. I was initially reluctant to click the link without knowing what I was getting myself into. Boy, how wrong I was.

I loved everything about the game: the story, the art and music, and the writing all came together beatifully. I'm now depressed for at least the remainder of the day, but that's just testimony to how powerful a game it is. Thank you!

Dash Brawler by glitchman 2018-08-14T15:53:26Z

The art looks really polished and I like the concept. I wish there was a bit more by way of storyline, though, and the controls felt a bit clumsy.

Oh, my main quibble: I kept getting confused as to which of the characters is controlled by me. I know there's only so much one can do with the color scheme to set the two characters apart, but at times it was frustrating trying to figure out which of the moving figures was responding to my input.

All in all, though, I feel this has the potential to be a great platformer, so I hope you keep working on it.

Zlinx by frontlinesaint 2018-08-14T10:58:37Z

OMG NOW THERE'S A FLOOD TOO!

Nice idea and cool minimalist graphics! Two quibbles, though. One: sometimes, you only see the objects above you when you hit them (e.g. you don't know they're there when making the jump). This may be inevitable with the triple jump, but it makes progressing through levels more frustrating than it should be. Two: don't reset the music every time the character dies, as in my case it dies A LOT and it's like I'm hearing the first few seconds of the soundtrack on repeat :) Otherwise, it's a very solid entry.

Garbage Gods by Inquisit 2018-08-14T12:59:58Z

Love the graphics.

Same here, can't access the game on itch.io.

ChromeSmasher by Mexzter 2018-08-14T07:20:25Z

Chrome eating up too much RAM? I feel your pain :)

This is good satire, perhaps better satire than a game. As a game, I'd love for it to have more variety: powerups, different kinds of Chromes (e.g. multiple tabs that you have to click several times), maybe objects to put in their way when there are too many of them... Otherwise, it gets boring fairly quickly. But I do think that adding some new features can make it into an addictive minimalist game.

The Unicorn Shelter by senokos 2018-08-14T18:28:27Z

@joschi Thanks for letting us know! Our host just decided to change its domain name without warning O_o The game is back online, though. Please give it another go!

There is something oldschool about this game. The feeling of playing a game from 90x.

The Creature Dies. by senokos 2020-04-20T19:55:11Z

@trko @team-prosit @inka-mcatee @honest @ben-taylor @mlho7 @gamegenesis @fictions @sarrixx Thank you all for the feedback and the kind words! I didn't have much time to work on the game this weekend and wanted to see what I could do with a simple idea - I'm glad many of you found the experience meaningful!

@jelle-vermandere: Thanks! I kind of wanted to avoid doing a Tamagotchi-style pet simulation, and most ideas I had boiled down to it one way or the other - so I thought I'd try to strip it of features to see what would happen. But there were actually lots of features on the to-do list at various points during the weekend: options to trade clicks/seconds for things (e.g. spend them to pause the game for a longer time); spending clicks on giving the creature a random name; having a leaderboard of the longest-surviving creatures; having the creature's image randomly combined from pre-existing parts, etc. At the end of the day, I thought I'd just keep it simple and minimal so that the concept comes across better.

The Creature Dies. by senokos 2020-04-21T17:55:02Z

@balgorode Wow, 1000 seconds is a lot of clicking! :) The final message is actually chosen randomly from a pool of phrases, although it's not a big pool so it's entirely possible that you could get the same one twice in a row. And there is in fact a special message one can get... after lasting for half an hour, i.e. 1800 seconds. XD

The Creature Dies. by senokos 2020-04-21T20:06:50Z

@balgorode Wouldn't blame you for not bothering :)

MegaCorn - Strategy / Economy Simulator by KittRangers 2020-04-21T09:13:27Z

It's kind of hard to understand the mechanics of the game, but title art is awesome :)

These eating sounds made me laugh :) Nice little game with homemade aesthetic. I like how the story of it is sweet and kind.
