LD42 — Running out of space

Anna's Tale by BloodJohn 2018-08-17T13:00:16Z

Oooh interesting - I like how you're getting people to think about memory through game mechanics. Ambitious and innovative 🤩 I think what would really help (and it's still not clear for me) - Is to be clearer at what the **goal** is for the game - yes memories fade, but are you supposed to preserve the best or most important ones? Are you supposed to force negative memories to fade so that they don't drag the princess down and colour the way she sees the world? Are you supposed to hold onto as many memories as you can, because eventually they will all fade and you're trying to resist a decline into dementia?

All these possibilities are exciting and interesting, and perhaps even you're wanting us as players to choose which one we want to do! But it would help to clear that up and allow the player to engage with the game in a more focused way.

I admire your ambitious folks - keep up the good work!

no-kill by daniel 2018-08-15T19:42:09Z

I feel like the character you play as could really do with a hip replacement to help correct his gait and slow walking pace 🚶‍♂️ Love the art style - like the little blurbs about the dogs - and great application to theme!

I really like this - A simple idea but a really good sense of exploration and critique on humans fucking up sh*t wherever they go 😅 I feel like it's a video game version of this comic: https://i.redd.it/1r1ctd1sbxwy.png

Anti-Automata by thegunmaster 2018-08-17T12:48:02Z

I think there's a few really interesting ideas here – I like how you move when you shoot, and you have to balance moving toward the green goo to defeat it without falling into it. I also really like the minesweepery aspect of if you hit the big joined-up middle bit of the green goo it AAAALL gets destroyed - that was very satisfying and I enjoyed aiming to get the biggest chain reaction I could.

Great work, especially for a single day! I read your post-mortum and sympathise - I've experienced having to make a bunch of u-turns in a game jam before, but my game has always been better for it, rather than persevering with an idea that's just not right. I also find game jams go better when you follow the fun, if a mechanic is not working for you and you're not enjoying creating it, just ditch it man! It hurts because we humans are suckers for the sunk cost fallacy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunk_cost#Loss_aversion_and_the_sunk_cost_fallacy but it's worth powering through!

TINY TOWNS by BearishMushroom 2018-08-15T13:00:15Z

Corrupted Core by squirrelsoft 2018-08-16T12:25:54Z

Wow no ratings yet?? Howwww this is a little hidden gem here! 💎

Very ambitious and innovative - I love the idea of a true 3D tower defence game and I can see a lot of thinking has gone into the design decisions you've made to make that a reality.

My favourite mechanic is the teleportation turrets! I like the idea of being able to zip around your base to where it's needed most.

To be constructively critical - I think what would help a LOT would be making things clearer with labels, colour coding and GUI overlays so that you know exactly what turret you're building, what it means to upgrade it, being able to clearly differentiate enemies from the rest of the environment, being able to easily see your teleportation turrets are, (maybe warping to them with hotkeys (maybe the number keys) instead of having to look around and click on the tiny distant turrets?) Also a tutorial would be fantastic. Hey even just showing screen shots of what the towers are next to their descriptions on itch.io would be majorly useful.

Well done peeps - lovely stuff 👏

Space Opera by t-mw 2018-08-17T14:26:19Z

This game is a great operatunity for opening up new arias in musical games.

No One's Land by tenshi42 2018-08-17T14:31:14Z

This game is the bomb! The music makes me think of an angry lawnmower but apart from that, a fine game indeed.

Day Three by EdwinGameDev 2018-08-15T20:58:14Z

That gat'dam spooky poopy bird keeps getting me - I run out of my house to distract him from pooping on my plants but he either kills them all then me or just rushes me and kills me before my useless fingers can control me back in my hut.

That was a wild ride

HACKHACKHACKHACKHACKHACKHACKHACKHACK

Gorgeous graphics - really good audio feedback and I love the little procedural 'bong bing bng bnng' sounds of the weeds growing!

My winner strat in the end was to just figure-of-eight around two flowers and mash the attack direction keys as fast as I could forever. Murdered over 500 weeds and I had to stop because my fingers got tired 😅Would be nice if it wasn't just an relentless assault and there was some other meaningful interaction the player make with the game other than just running around and chopping?

Hevnsdør by hatchet 2018-08-15T20:12:19Z

Wow wow wow I am feeling some feelings right now. Excellent mood - the slow pace makes you really feel the weight of your decisions ("was I right to let that guy through even though he kicked a DAWG!?!"). I really like the conciseness of this game - just a simple but interesting little gem 💎

TCGD AntiVirus '98 by Allen Oliver 2018-08-16T21:59:08Z

Cool game - I think we clearly were some on some kind of crazy brainwave together because we both had a very similar and excellent idea 😂 Check mine out - I swear I didn't hack into your computer's webcam and observe your idea generation process and then steal your idea https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/defrag-1

Cyber Janitor by Croosle 2018-08-17T12:36:52Z

Wow - what a lovely little game - I love the minimalist graphics and the lonely peaceful melancholy mood you've created here 😌 I got goosebumps when I saw the Earth out of the window because it was so easy to miss and you can only glimpse it a little bit. The whole experience reminded so much of this film: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/

In the last LD jam I made a game about this subject as well, but mine is a little more frantic 😅 https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/cryptopia

THIS. GAME. IS. BANANAS.

Reminds me of the wacky headlines in Simcity 2000 I love the surreal sense of humour and how you've created an something that acts as an engaging simulation and interesting storytelling device *at the same time*

Lovely stuff!

Space Out! by Wattumartti 2018-08-16T12:55:30Z

This is brilliant! 🤩I really tight little simulationy game - BANG on theme, you really have put that idea of running out of habitable space at the centre of the game and the decisions the player makes - I really like the sense you get of building the galactic empire out into uncharted and uninhabited space in like a militaristic, osmotic kind of way - visuals are gorgeous, really liked the little Kurtzgesagty little planets and space bits :D

Excellent work!

Tin Can Invasion by technodragon253 2018-08-17T14:23:07Z

The physics in this game have a tindency to act a little strangely, but I canned deny I had a good timing playing it. Really opened me up to new ideas.

Delusional Thoughts by aCuriosity 2018-08-15T19:24:17Z

This took me by surprise! That tune is so good - kept me playing just to hear the next bit and the next bit. Kinda Thomas Was Alone-y? Just like here's a game that's pretty neat but you care more about the tiny goofy character because you get this strangely sweet and poignant insight into his life through the music. The gameplay was good as well! Kept me engaged, super on-theme - good increase of difficulty and suspense as the floor crumbled but hey the hail mary jump ability got me out of a few times I thought I was done for. Really nice game dude.

King of Bjorp by Colin Doody 2018-08-16T21:24:19Z

Nice work making the 1-player fun and engaging and the ai pretty smart. I see some jam games use local co-op as a crutch for replayability and creating a scalable challenge but you've really thought about us loners and made the solo experience valid and it is appreciated!

Stuck! by chkkll 2018-08-15T20:25:12Z

Living in London and I commute in to the centre - this game is toO REEEAL😱 Well done mate - wow graphics (that LIGHTING🤩), loved the tune and the subtle sfx, movement was loose and squidgy and excellently simulates the jostlyness of public tranport 👍

California Jane by fivenamefivesocks 2018-08-16T21:12:43Z

So gorgeous! Bursting with great ideas, excellent puzzle design - tricky but satisfying - amazing music and sound - outstanding graphics and clearly a lot of hard work and finesse and polish. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!!!

Mars Web by RyanJavanshir 2018-08-15T19:52:55Z

Sorry! Fell at the employee ID and Password hurdle 😞 the only thing I can think of is 'Ryan' and 'olympusmons' but that doesn't seem to work. I like the vision and if you let me know how to get past that first bit and into the command line stuff I'll give it another shot

The Gargoyle Landing by BoopsGames 2018-08-15T21:05:53Z

Really smooth and well executed. I really like this - I didn't read the description and accidentally discovered the match-3 functionality which I think actually 🤩 made it more exciting and rewarding - I feel that this game is has quite a bit of depth, the match-3 aspect is just blowing my mind right now

LD44 — Your life is currency

Drytown by DavidPIxel 2019-05-06T12:26:42Z

I liked it! The choice of a vampiretown rpg is really inspired and fitting for the theme - Cute puzzles and I enjoyed tentacle tennis, I think a more fluid and interesting combat system / way of grinding for blood would make this game feel more rounded and satisfying, but otherwise a wonderful little gem 💎

This is your life now by reuno 2019-05-06T11:44:07Z

Seaway by Constantin 2019-05-03T20:46:18Z

Beautiful game - excellent polish and lovely art style and music and exploration.

I am going to second what others have been saying above regarding slavery - I can totally appreciate how it relates to the theme - but I think it's just a very sensitive subject matter for a game jam, particularly when it's presented in such a trivialising way. For example, aliens invading and enslaving the human race would be less problematic than a stylised depiction of an idealised swashbuckling perspective on the Atlantic Slave Trade. I know you're not endorsing Slavery™️ with this game, but I think it's a missed opportunity - we should use our powers as game makers for good!

Yeah otherwise completely excellent work! - looking forward to seeing your next LD entry!

Darkest Decision by pmarincak 2019-05-06T11:58:44Z

Very atmospheric and foreboding! I like the mechanics too - Only small criticism, I wasn't sure exactly what the icons at the top pertained to - I knew there was health and food and faith and stuff but I forgot which one meant which - Maybe like a hoverstate on the icons that come up with the names of them?

Lovely stuff - looking forward to your next LD entry!

Nomad by mediyaz 2019-05-02T14:56:17Z

@oroshix Gather fuel > Upgrade ship > Explore map to find the secret secret thing you can use to unlock the thing you need to unlock to escape!

Nomad by mediyaz 2019-05-02T14:59:27Z

@birchtree Thank you! Yes, I wanted a game that was mainly about exploring and so I wanted to include lots of things you could stumble upon along the way that can help with your fuel gathering. I'm very pleased with the drifting with no fuel aspect - it initially was a happy accident that I ended up polishing and keeping in as it really fit with the setting.

Nomad by mediyaz 2019-05-02T15:01:30Z

@noobexception Yeah the controls are inspired by actual space probes, where your jets/fuel are only used sparing and mainly to slow down and change direction - it's all about building a bit of speed and making little adjustments whilst drifting as much as you can to conserve fuel.

Nomad by mediyaz 2019-05-02T15:03:50Z

@flying-dog-fish Thank you! I wanted to use the theme to inspire not only the mechanics of the game, but the setting as well.

Nomad by mediyaz 2019-05-02T15:07:55Z

@corqi Screenshot 2019-04-29 at 18.18.13.png You can upgrade your ship at one of these stations dotted around the map - you can fly into them and hold a direction (left/up/down) to purchase upgrades in exchange for your lifeblood as a space explorer - your fuel! Pssst SPOLIERS: If you find the secret purple station (I wonder where all those purple ships are headed to in such a hurry?) You can get an upgrade to your ship to allow you to leave the gravity well and complete the game - you don't need loads of fuel to do it either.

Nomad by mediyaz 2019-05-02T15:09:43Z

@dexfrost89 Thank you! Apologies for the lag - the galaxy is very large with a lot of physics objects. Perhaps splitting it into smaller solar systems might help.

Nomad by mediyaz 2019-05-02T15:10:58Z

@mironx Thanks - I don't know if you played the web or windows version, but if you only tried the web one, give the windows one a go - it *should* be way faster!

Nomad by mediyaz 2019-05-02T15:51:00Z

@dexfrost89 Oh great - Thanks for returning to my game! And you can press 'M' to mute the music!

Nomad by mediyaz 2019-05-02T15:51:31Z

@jasond Thanks for your kind words!

Nomad by mediyaz 2019-05-07T11:22:44Z

@peringo Thanks! - I wanted player-directed exploration to be a key part of the game and while I included 'paths' of fuel pieces the player could follow to various points of interest, the greatest rewards would be when the player strikes out on their own to possibly find things others might have missed. I think to encourage exploration and make it feel exciting and rewarding, the player needs to not be too directed and it's tricky calibrating that balance to suit all players. Thanks for your feedback!

Nomad by mediyaz 2019-05-07T11:26:49Z

@fireslash Thanks for pointing that out - It *is* actually possible to escape the planets - instead of trying to get away directly from the planet's gravitational pull, jet at a right-angle to it so you orbit the planet. Keep jetting the spiralling out from the planet to build up enough speed to escape the pull. But yeah it's not that intuitive to do that and I bet that could be frustrating. I love the idea of landing on planets - would be cool to be able to interact with them and mine them for minerals or trade with the inhabitants or get information about surrounding area.

A life in Far-West by WhoMakeWorse 2019-05-06T19:01:12Z

Fun to play dodging around arrows and staying alive. I have to say though - I think a game about enacting genocide on Native Americans is just very problematic. Maybe the cowboy could shoot bandits instead?

Boltzmann by Hermitao 2019-10-16T21:31:05Z

Great stuff! I really like this - I like how rather than having videogamey elements like score and enemies and lives and stuff, it's just about creating something cool and exploring the physics of the system you've created.

It reminds me a lot of a game I made at the GMTK game jam: https://lukenofurther.itch.io/singularity - it was also about bringing together little motes of matter to create a star ⭐ Hope you enjoy it!

Force of Nature by RedZ0ner 2019-10-16T20:44:26Z

I liked the concept and it was quite satisfying to plonk down plants and make footholds into new blocks - I eventually won the game mainly by spamming cross plants without much strategy. Very vibrant looking game and a cool simulation a solid tutorial/how to play/strategy guide would be very helpful

LD47 — Stuck in a loop

COLORSPACE by Thought Reactor 2020-10-15T16:20:33Z

Way more legit-looking than a lot of games I've played so far - very polished and slick and a cool thought-through design idea. One complaint: when platforming sometimes when I was on the coloured blocks I wouldn't be able to jump reliably so I'd just run off the edge without jumping and lose progress and keep having to go back around and start again and fall again. Otherwise, beautiful stuff - liked the little picking up / putting down keys puzzle when you're stuck in the little cupboard area. Very cool.

Loopy Particle Simulator by nusan 2020-10-11T15:32:17Z

Rocket Factory by Matthew Roelle 2020-10-14T16:29:46Z

Haha great - really hectic but not too overwhelming - smart idea to have the visual indicator of how the time limit to respond to an order is it slowly scrolling to the top of the screen - you could have put a clock on it, but the way you chose is a lot clearer and easier to grasp at a glance. Well done!

Pufferfish Panic : Proliferating Pressure by Teanan 2020-10-11T13:56:26Z

Time Bomb by Flightless 2020-10-15T09:57:48Z

Hilarious concept - the robot is ridiculously ill-suited to its task of ejecting the timebombs, and yet they're the only one there to do it! It's like a house is on fire, but the only one that can save it is the goldfish - flopping around over the phone trying to call the fire department and operate a foam fire extinguisher. I really liked this goofy yet challenging game.

Surround Them! by Aune 2020-10-13T09:52:40Z

Great stuff - really polished! You make a really interesting point in your comment about controls - it seems there's no right way to do space shooter-style controls! You always get some people preferring one way or the other. I've made games where direction is relative to the ship (turning left/right, acceleration/brake) and games where direction is absolute (up to move to the top of the screen, down to move to the bottom, etc).

I think for people more familiar with the theming, a space setting with a 4-way control scheme suggests that you will have a large open space to explore and you will do so with vehicular controls to help you get into the fantasy of being a pilot of a spacecraft.

However, because your game is locked to a specific region with a camera that doesn't follow the player and the gameplay feels more action-arcade rather than action-adventure - it makes total sense to use the control scheme you did - the gameplay is more like snake or a twin-stick shooter.

Well done - beautiful game, well made!

Right Side Up by TheJonu 2020-10-14T16:53:24Z

Great, really like exploding the box around the screen in slow-mo - I don't know why the box moves on its own. Doesn't really make sense to me with the theming of an inanimate box - maybe adding conveyor belts would justify the movement a bit more?

Loopy Loco by ReallyQbert 2020-10-15T15:54:48Z

A sweet setting and theme, but surprisingly adrenaline inducing! Franticly clicking as the train gets closer to cycle through the pieces and OH NO I went past the one I wanted CLICKCLICKCLCKLCKCLCKLKKLKLKL YHES! Okay next piece wait where does this train need to go?! over there, over here, up there okay CLICKCLICKCLICK... I enjoyed it!

Wow very ambitious - really like the weapon impact sounds - super janky but love the aesthetic.

End the Rampage by Nbrowning5 2020-10-15T09:16:58Z

It's like an autoscrolling level in a Mario game but less irritating because you're not locked into the screen - you can actually lap the advancing wall of death in this - finally freedom!

[while'd] by Celuloide 2020-10-15T09:24:18Z

It's all been said before but yeah just go back to the beginning of the current level if you lose, not back to the beginning of the level two levels ago. That feels really punishing. Beautiful game and cute concept - I like the programming theme.

Once More, Through the Desert by Totteri 2020-10-15T09:01:05Z

I thought this game was at its best when the gameplay would change slightly to reflect the story - I think that's when this game's concept is at its strongest, otherwise you're just playing a very simple game and reading some little bits of text - if there's some integration there then the experience is much more rich as the gameplay makes you feel the story more and the story helps you understand the gameplay and the elements feel more connected.

I applaud the bravery in attempting such an ambitiously high-concept game - it kept me playing all the way to the end.

A LOT of charm and a lot of hard work and attention to detail in the theming and art style - I really liked the wobbly guy at the beginning - Really cool tunes (I was listening to the Retrowave Outrun Spotify playlist back to back while working on LD41 so it really tickles my pickle) - The questions were tough but hilarious, I found myself guessing most of the time (particularly as a non-US person (not that that would matter much probably 😅)) BUT YEAH very creative and polished and incredibly well-presented. I've saved all the tunes to my Soundcloud collection too 😉

"Hmmmffmmfmmmm" 😣

YES! Really fun, even though I was bested by the bubbles and there was no way to voluntarily go back to a checkpoint 😅 Great art style, great genre mashup - a simple idea that has been well implemented. Platformer physics were pretty loose and floaty but I didn't really mind because that wasn't the focus of the game - the time spent making puzzles and art were better spent there than unjankifying the physics!

Cryptopia by mediyaz 2018-04-25T07:54:41Z

pssst - if you want to see more of the game in a shorter space of time, you can press backspace then type in 31031989 to enable cheat mode! This will remove all the garbage clogging up the paths and allow you to charge up your beam instantly (press C), get a piece of cryptocurrency (press O), get a whole load of resources (press M), or receive a human consciousness to put in a shell (press I) - I'm going to add this to the game description for reviewers in a hurry!

Cryptopia by mediyaz 2018-04-25T07:58:06Z

@BalladofSong Thanks for playing! I didn’t have time to implement a tutorial so apologies that you got stuck.

Once you collect 100 bits of tech (the number at the top left that increases every time you destroy some garbage) you can build solar arrays on the cleared-out blue outdoor plots of land. These charge up and can give you an extra-powerful shot that can clear through garbage quicker, you can charge up by right-clicking once a solar array has filled up. This charged shot can by used to power the green mining rigs you can find around the map. When you power-up the green rigs, they slowly generate cryptocurrency - when they turn white you can click on them to pick it up, and drop it in one of the two yellow conduits on the map so that you can use it to buy things with. You can buy more mining rigs on the indoor plots of land with this cryptocurrency, to make more crptocurrency faster! If you earn enough you can build shells for human conciousness on the orange indoor plots 👍

I’m glad you enjoyed it - personally my favourite part is building a whole load of solar arrays so that you can nearly always become charged by clicking the right mouse button, and blasting my way through garbage or recharging my mining rigs at lightning speed!

@Elfcirynn Thanks for playing and your honest feedback - yes I definitely need a tutorial or help screen or SOMETHING - Going to be working to implement that tonight actually 😅 If you fancy playing again, you can cheat to clear out all the garbage and press M to get infinite money so you can peep the endgame. My genres were Dystopia and Uptopia! Is what we're seeing in the game a Dystopia? It certainly is for the robots, but for the humans? We only get a glimpse at the peaceful carefree Utopian lives they lead in their eternal virtual existence while robots clean up the world, generate their power, earn their money and take care of their physical computers their minds inhabit. It started out as a combination of gritty brutal sci-fi + quaint chilled farming simulator and kinda evolved from there!

@Eugene Myach WOW I think you're the only person other than me to have cleared out the whole map - congratulations! Thank you for playing and sticking with it even though the game didn't explain itself to you clearly. When you say you didn't understand, do you mean - you didn't understand what you had to do? - or you didn't understand what was happening and why?

I've recently released a small update so that no all the buildings and plots have hoverstates that give you a little more instruction on how to interact with them - That might help you finish the game if you wanted to play it some more! If so, tell me how you got on! 😁

@tweedle I gahd! I was only supposed to opt out of the audio category! I've fixed that now so feel free to drop by and leave a review? ☺️ And if you digged the music, it's actually my brother's tune - you can check him out on soundcloud here: https://soundcloud.com/chimetunes. Thanks for playing!

@pRoFiT Yeah I considered asking my bro for a quick track but he was off doing a tour of the USA at the time 😅I'll tell him his music has been getting mad props though 💪

Yeah - Once you buy a Shell and charge it up, it'll be ready for you to insert an IMMORTAL CONSCIOUSNESS which you can get from one of the 2 orangey tubes that light up once you build your first shell - once you pick it up from there and insert it in a shell you have to take care of it and make sure it doesn't run out of energy. Find, build and fill all 10 shells to get the sector to max capacity and WIN🤩Now back to work little robot while we humans piss about in an eternal utopian cyberspace while you have to clear up the millennia of garbage we made 😛

Thanks for playing! I've added your game (and everyone elses' who has commented) to my growing list of games to play and rate!

PS - sorry if you're getting slowdown while playing - I made this game fast and dirty and I'm now going back through and making a bunch of optimisations so you don't have to play slo-mobiusly!
