How do I rate games? Sorry - a first timer here.
@marcin-sciesinski leave comments here and click on the stars above... you can only rate games if you have submitted a game (IIRC).
* would have been nice if I could have clicked the choice instead of having to press a number (you could have put buttons on the UI and changed their text) * Resolution box got messed up, couldn't pick a resolution * It was really hard to read the text * had spots were I couldn't click on a path option * lots of random rendering artifacts in rendering. * Stories were interesting.

@adroitconceptions oh man so sorry! I don't have a linux machine to test with, It seems to be fine on my machine(s) (said every developer ever). I'll see if there is something I can update thanks for reporting the problems!
I found after a while the text really started to hurt my eyes. Maybe for the decisions and options the font could have been a little more generic. I do like the look of it though very nice.
It became apparent really quickly that anyone I sent out wasn't coming back. I appreciated that the frogs are harbingers of death. Nice submission!
interesting concept. felt like my choices didn't matter too much since i had so many resources of everything, but the game was very aesthetically pleasing and i enjoyed the soundtrack. i also had some issues with random artifacting/screen tearing when moving.
I also would have liked to be able to click on options rather than the keyboard, especially since the other input in the game is to click on the circles. Text was a little hard to read at times. But I did chuckle a few times, and the music was pretty decent.
@amanda-priest it hurts mine too. Crunch is crunch :) thanks for checking it out! @numeralien 2/3 or so it's bad. I underestimated the time it would take me to write all the stories and multiple options and multiple resolutions to each option. This ties into @tylerstraub 's feeling as well. The idea was to weight the RNG on a curve for the responses and options so sacrifices would alter what choices could be made and what random related results would return. The code was in place to handle it, but the creative mind to write all the dialogue/narrative trees ran dry. I grossly underestimated and until today underappreciated writers for short video game narratives/dialogue trees. When I looked at the clock and the first story took me about 1.5 hours to pen I knew I was in some trouble. @monkeedude1212 what's funny is before I put borders around them I never tried to click them, and then when I was overstretched for time on the final hours I even started trying to click them.
Great work! I love the writing. Very funny and surprising stuff throughout.
Your game was pretty fun. I had no issues with the screen on my mac. I liked the concept, the writing was well done and the audio was a very nice touch.
I didn't have any issues that weren't already said above, but I now hate frogs :/
@tigerj - I suspect that the off screen issue was related to screen resolution/aspect ratio, but couldn't test that because of the resolution selection box issue.
You asked for it, so, some typos I ran into: * "it's a site you have never seen" -> "sight" * "click anwhere to continue" (on every event) * "faster than you can blink it's ropelike tongue" -> "faster than you can blink**, its** rope**-**like tongue" * "is any ranging beasts" -> "are any ranging beasts" * "each other! half of them..." -> "each other! **H**alf of them" * "the ones that do not return empty handed." -> "the ones that do return empty handed"
In "Have Frogs Will Travel", it said I lost my gatherers, but I gained some instead. Also, that event came up twice in quick succession, well, free gatherers, I guess!
I have difficultly reading the font. Green background flickers as the world scrolls. Other than that, I really like the art style, quite a bit of variety there.
The writing sometimes made me giggle, so that's good =).
I made it to the end, score of 664.
Probably due to resolution, at the end, I see "ANKS for the play" off in the sea...
Music never got annoying, so that's great =)
I think a lot of commenters covered my thoughts as well. I didn't have any technical issues, and also want to echo Jimbly's comment that the music never got annoying! An admirable feat considering the amount of time spent just sitting and listening while you read.
Props to you for getting so much writing in, especially considering there are so many outcomes. Nicely done!
Given the large amount of text, there weren't very many typos! Glad you pushed through with the writing because it's quite humorous. Love how you worked the frogs into every story.
I think it needs a way to lose, maybe some "obviously bad" choices that guarantee losing large numbers of people.
Here's my play: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/344727890?t=01h03m
i enjoyed it, very reignsy! i do wish more of the events had predictable outcomes, seemed like there were a lot of random ones, but it was lots of fun and a good simplification of oregon trail!
@jimbly THANK YOU and @mrjoshuamclean loved your play through! @lenny-sirivong and @kddressel Thanks it means a lot I have never put story or narrative in any of my previous games. This has been a very motivational comp for me. All of your comments about the music is great too. I always save sound for last and it was a rush to get it setup in time. Thanks!!
The art is adorable, and the stories are well written. Very chill mood! I played it twice. You can really feel all the love you put in there! Maybe the music was the only thing I liked a bit less. Really well done man!
As soon as I fired up the game you already got points for the presentation. Anything attempting to put an LD twist on Oregon Trail attracts me immediately. The art and sounds are extremely cohesive for a compo game so the overall first impression was way better than most compo games.
Our team has run into your problem of creative well drying up before, but instead of writer's block, we had puzzle game level design blocks so I know how tough that can be to squeeze out those final lines of inspiration. Nonetheless I thought the writing was pretty solid and I enjoyed seeing my posse meet its misfortunes in so many ways.
Someone here mentioned it being pretty reignsy. I think the first playthrough certainly feels like you don't have too much control over your caravan and it's hard to pick up on any gameplay patterns if there are there. As a thought experiment have you considered how the game would play if it was more like Reigns where you could see the results of your actions before you make them? It would certainly give more power to the players in determining their fate, but it's a big design change and you'd have to make sure there was a lot of balancing involved. You'd really have to find an interesting way to push and pull on all your resources to make the player feel like they were making big sacrifices.
That's just a suggestion on where the game could go in the future. With that said I'm just overall impressed with the breadth of the game and look forward to seeing your post-mortem of the game. I think there's such a nice core game built here that you can take it into some really cool directions.
Very cool! I love that there's so much content here - not really sure what's the fixation on frogs, but hey, it was fun! I'm not entirely sure it's possible to lose, just seeing how many resources I had at the end of the game, but maybe you weren't going for the Oregon Trail "everyone died of dysentery on the third day" feel. ;) There were a few flubs; in one instance the result of an event told me I'd lost many members of my party, but I actually gained that many. Minor things, nothing that compromised the experience. I love the overworld map, and the animations on the oxen/wagons! The music was nice too. Great entry!
Some of those stories made me smile! A few grammar errors here and there, but other than that pretty enjoyable. I will say I thought the music was a little loud, although I didn't look to see if you had a way of adjusting volume so maybe that could have been easily remedied.
@peachtreeoath thanks so much for such a wonderful detailed response. My main goal this LD was to push myself and add a story, environment, narrative into my game. I usually make arcade-esk scoring games but wanted some different skills to "level up". I appreciate all the complements. It was a blast. This whole LD has been one of the best in a while. SO many wonderful takes on the theme. I adored your game, it's soundtrack and my inability to stop a limo from text-720-ing into a school bus.
@spacemonkey thanks for the play!! I'll continue to work on my music!
@justinmullin Thanks! I am elated that you had a good time. The frogs was a limitation from another game jam running at the same time which had a western theme and a requirement that you put frogs in your game. It brought out a lot of creativity due to the odd mashup. I feel entering the mini jam pushed me over a creative hill I was climbing. There is a bug somewhere in one of the calls but the code was rushed and is so messy I might not find it for a while :)
@dbongames I have to get better and scoping and give myself time to proof read. I was so burned out in the end I had time to play through a few sessions but I didn't even wanna look at the game at that point. Ah the joy of crunching.
Great concept, and I like when people try narrative games during these jams. As you probably have heard already, all the events that were supposed to make me lose people made me gain them instead.
Nice game! I liked some of the stories and the rhyme in the beginning. Since I'm already using the mouse to click on spots in the map, I would've liked to use the mouse to click on the choices. Other than that it was a fun experience. Well done!
Fun game this time around~ I found it more immersive than your last entry. I love the variation and the luck involved. I didn't lose a lot of members in the end, except children, so I can't tell if I got lucky or if it's normal it's that easy. I loved how the pigs were the ones pulling the carts too, haha.

The whole frog thing was almost really funny, maybe just needed some additional backstory to really set it up. I am apparently very "bad" at this game as I started to lose people from my group left and right, but on the other hand, that made it feel quite faithful to the Oregon Trail experience, lol!
