LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Sacrifices Must Be Made by danman9914 2018-12-03T06:37:11Z

this is honestly one of the most impressive looking ludum dare games i've seen. extremely good atmostphere and very well done with the theme. it's very smooth and looks very finished.

like secretmapper said though, there is the warren bug where it gives you rabbits just by selecting him. otherwise, the game felt very complete.

Nihilistic Nurture Navigation by NoahRo 2018-12-08T00:21:21Z

the idea is there, but like you said, it's unfinished. would be interesting to see a finished product

Quest for the West by tigerj 2018-12-03T05:58:13Z

interesting concept. felt like my choices didn't matter too much since i had so many resources of everything, but the game was very aesthetically pleasing and i enjoyed the soundtrack. i also had some issues with random artifacting/screen tearing when moving.

Strain of the Gods by JavaSaurus 2018-12-08T00:36:53Z

game has a lot of potential but seemed to be bogged down a bit by the vast scope of the game. there are a few bugs i got on my first playthrough:

-main menu doesn't work after you die

-torrential downpour seems to just kill all my people no matter what. maybe i did something wrong? but from what i understood all but one were in the houses

-when pressing ctrl + arrow key to select a villager, it only worked if you held ctrl. letting go stopped the camera where it was until you held ctrl again

some other things that i think would be helpful:

-more detailed minimap, i.e. show a box of what the player can see (minimap was much bigger)

-faster scrolling

-more responsive moving (sometimes villagers wait a few moments before moving)

overall the game was very pretty and kinda eerie, which i liked, but the constraints of ludum dare make more complex games more difficult to create. good stuff though.

The nightmare by Zsolt 2018-12-03T17:22:10Z

you can opt out towards the bottom of the "edit game" page

Temple of the Blood God by ZanyG 2018-12-03T05:45:28Z

game looks and sounds good, but controlling is a little difficult, particularly since the player gets stuck on walls and will randomly die when jumping into a ceiling. also, the cursor disappears when you press escape and can't actually use the menu when paused. it is a fairly interesting concept though.

This is fine by Antt5053 2018-12-03T17:19:37Z

it's a cute and basic game. some things i will say though:

-the "it's a feature, not a bug" thing is a little unprofessional, and adding things like bounds so that the player can't escape are fairly small but go a long way

-there are quite a few typos at the end, would be worth looking at

-timer is a little bit small

ultimately, it makes sense a lot of stuff didn't make the cut (because that's the nature of ludum dare), but there are some things that are fairly important. that being said, i actually really liked the "bad" art style, mainly because it was cohesive and kinda fun.

The Arena by tylerstraub 2018-12-03T16:53:16Z

@bloodyorchiddc @darylsteak My bad, it should be working now. Thanks for the heads up!

Slice by Taximan981 2018-12-03T23:37:33Z

game didn't have much but what it did have felt fairly complete. not really sure how it plays into the theme that much. also, this isn't as big of a deal, but i think the crosshair in non-symmetrical, which was slightly annoying (but really did not matter, more of an OCD thing)

Memento Morty by okuar 2018-12-03T23:47:17Z

pretty sweet concept and well executed. enjoyed the game and felt adequately challenged. just so you know, there is sometimes a glitch where your first reincarnation immediately dies. also, there were a few typos in the intro. otherwise, fun game and solid use of the theme.

Memento Morty by okuar 2018-12-04T00:05:45Z

@okuar i am on windows 10 64 bit

LD46 — Keep it alive

Dimmer by Chaseplays 2020-04-20T22:39:12Z

music is awesome. only complaint is character felt either too slow or really slidey though but otherwise this is a great job

Keep the King Alive by Noxalus 2020-04-21T20:34:28Z

map scrolling is pretty fast and music is a little loud but i really enjoyed the game otherwise

Heart Break by gnx 2020-04-23T20:06:36Z

really great simple concept, loved the music

Crater Critters by Jimanzium 2020-04-20T22:28:31Z

i think it's a little too easy but i love the mood

Fell Out Survival by talslain 2020-04-20T22:19:17Z

FYI the button to start a new game when your crops die doesn't work

Keep Them Alive by kaeveris 2020-04-21T20:26:44Z

i enjoyed the level design. a little buggy though - you got your jump back if you touched the side or bottom of a block

Legacy by tylerstraub 2020-04-21T05:34:52Z

@brandann i made this on a 1080p monitor so didn’t foresee that issue unfortunately. also didn’t realize the console was showing - oops

Legacy by tylerstraub 2020-04-21T14:16:40Z

@chaseplays thanks, although i didn't really come up with the puzzle concept (look up binary puzzles). i will look into optimizations today or tomorrow as i didn't realize it might have issues running on lower end computers

Legacy by tylerstraub 2020-04-21T16:47:05Z

@chaseplays hey i made optimizations to how the audio was loaded - if you have the time let me know if it runs better!

Legacy by tylerstraub 2020-04-21T20:21:55Z

@chaseplays ah weird, i tested on a single monitor so had no clue. glad to hear though!

Legacy by tylerstraub 2020-04-23T01:44:01Z

@isayneigh thanks! graphics were definitely the lowest priority unfortunately, as i spent the majority of the time polishing the game mechanics. if i were to work on it more, the graphics would for sure get a major overhaul

Legacy by tylerstraub 2020-04-23T15:45:54Z

@sztrovacsek by any chance did you try dragging the punch card to the right side of the screen? That expands the card to a larger size

Legacy by tylerstraub 2020-04-23T16:40:07Z

@sztrovacsek haha no problem. when you mentioned the right click didn't do anything i was like wait a minute

Legacy by tylerstraub 2020-04-25T20:45:51Z

@mantou thanks! the theme idea was to keep the computer "alive" and running, also some dumb metaphor about keeping legacy machines alive.

@draklaw yeah i was not able to come up with a core design concept until the last day so the puzzles were not very fleshed out

Legacy by tylerstraub 2020-04-30T21:52:06Z

@baylej hey, yeah you got it - the blue holes are just the pre-punched holes that you can't change. the black ones indicated that you punched them.

Ant by Nakami 2020-04-22T20:12:31Z

really clever puzzles

Bloody Fantastic by mikejzx 2020-04-22T23:44:26Z

love how you thought outside the box for this idea

Test-a-ball by JAsonsumm1 2020-04-20T22:05:31Z

.exe crashed for me after showing splash screen for a quarter second and HTML5 webapp shows a black screen after the game starts for half a second as well

Negative Zone by Phoenix Fireflower 2020-04-22T20:32:31Z

really well done, reminds me a lot of the old flash game shift (for obvious reasons). only issues were that sometimes that collision didn't feel great and that it was kind of confusing to control two people at once - maybe try switching between them by pressing a button? awesome job otherwise

Magic Valley by SpicyPaper 2020-04-22T20:39:41Z

really cool art but was having a lot of framerate issues on the web version, particularly when i left the grass area

Something Fishy by sztrovacsek 2020-04-22T23:50:13Z

one bug is that the play again and new game buttons when you win didn't seem to work for me. nice game concept otherwise

Space Cows and Big Problems by saviorium 2020-04-22T19:58:01Z

pixel art is very nice but like others, i was totally lost on what to do

BigFlow by Nivamdjo 2020-04-23T20:04:47Z

there is a bug that when you restart the game, the music plays twice

The Priest and the Bandits by TheDestoryer 2020-04-22T23:57:06Z

it's fun but pretty damn hard lol. tree collision got pretty annoying pretty fast though

The Priest and the Bandits by TheDestoryer 2020-04-23T01:43:00Z

@thedestoryer i guess it was annoying because tradtionally trees are only borders at the stump. it also felt like there were trees everywhere which made it more frustrating. i understand what you were going for though, not sure of a proper solution

Feed the dog by mungobulge 2020-04-23T01:53:08Z

agree with others that some sort of HUD indicating ammo + dog hunger would have helped. game concept could have also been fleshed out more. however, art is amazing and the atmosphere is great, plus the music is pretty good.

Souls Keeper by Not The Loading Screen 2020-04-23T20:13:07Z

would be nice to maybe have a minimap, or some indicator of where the flame is. otherwise really enjoyed the atmosphere you created

LD50 — Delay the inevitable

Shotgun King: the Final Checkmate by benjamin 2022-04-06T17:54:28Z

Seriously impressive game. Awesome concept with a ton of polish, way to kill it

The Pit by dikkop 2022-04-08T01:34:23Z

Really well done, loved the sound and all the little gameplay nuggets you find throughout

Cleric Wanted by Garazbolg2 2022-04-04T17:44:55Z

Really enjoyed this, would be nice if combat paused when you clicked "run away" and also if there was some indicator of exactly how much mana/hp you have, but otherwise this is actually a pretty fun game.

Pax Nebulae by p-r 2022-04-06T23:08:04Z

Pretty expansive game - I enjoyed finding new encounters and exploring different planets or stars. I think there is a cool foundation here, but like gbgames said, sometimes it's hard to tell when you're moving since it's all black. I like this overall though, some GUI polishing and more in depth content could make this really fun

Cherish the Light by Swen 2022-04-04T19:23:35Z

Can be really frustrating to fall and accidentally hit an earlier checkpoint, but the graphics are really nice in this

Crash Override by DanC2236 2022-04-04T17:22:03Z

Cool concept though I think difficulty ramps up a little too quick, especially since it takes some time to learn the commands. Also, I am really not a fan of your inputs sometimes randomly being the wrong letter especially since you have no way of knowing if it was wrong if the malware is blocking it. Forces you to just keep typing the same command until it works

During Light by Bullex 2022-04-05T20:42:31Z

Nice presentation - the audio is kind of crackly, not sure if that is intentional. I also couldn't quite figure out where I could or could not place candles. Lighting looks good though!

Icebreak by tylerstraub 2022-04-05T20:25:35Z

@damnscout Thanks for the response. Can you elaborate on what you mean by the pushing mechanic is a bit confusing? I agree but I'm curious on your thoughts.

Icebreak by tylerstraub 2022-04-06T23:49:58Z

@adangtran I appreciated the feedback! Forcing the player to remember the attack types was certainly not intentional to keep the difficulty up but was rather a product of not having enough time to add those quality of life features. It is certainly something I will probably add to the game description here at least.

@william-corrin Thanks for the comment! Unfortunately the pathfinding algorithm I used (breadth-first) was a little random in how the enemy chose to proceed, so as a result it wasn't super predictable. In the future I would probably make it clear what the enemy's next move would be to help with this. Again, really appreciate the feedback.

@6smith I try B)

Icebreak by tylerstraub 2022-04-13T20:14:21Z

@cerno-b thanks for the detailed feedback. I was working until the last minute so was unable to add music in time - definitely something I wanted to do.

Your feedback in regards to strategy and knowing how enemies would act is fairly common and certainly something I’d work on in the future.

The enemy spawn time was a critique another friend had who played the first version, I messed around with decreasing the spawn time but then they fell too fast. In the future I would find a different method to spawn enemies and make it clear they just spawned - again very limited by time here unfortunately.

Finally, sorry about all the files in the zip, but again I didn’t have time to figure out a static build, plus I didn’t know about that limitation of the itch.io client (or that there even was one).

Freemine Castle by Stefan0198 2022-04-05T20:55:48Z

One of the more visually impressive Ludum Dare entries, but some of the gameplay was really frustrating, such as the guessing game with hopping on the river stones as well as the slow walk speed. Made it to the end though!

Fort Postremus by Erukolindo 2022-04-05T20:35:43Z

I think some sort of explanation of gameplay would really help here

The Fall of Mezentople by vgel 2022-04-04T19:07:06Z

It's kind of difficult to gauge what affects aspects in what ways. The overall presentation is very clean though.

Out Of Gas! by mortalfosca 2022-04-04T20:54:06Z

Nice work

Magic Missile by Tim Sims 2022-04-04T17:50:38Z

Space invaders but with the fighter, nice twist

Demon Wins Everytime by MacabreArtGames 2022-04-06T17:36:16Z

Really liked how you have to choose which upgrade the demons got. Agree with others though that the controls (in terms of movement) were a little strange

Alchemy by Rustywolf 2022-04-04T17:28:10Z

I am unable to stir (assuming that stick thing is the stirring stick), so I lose every time. Not sure if I am doing something wrong

Yarr me shippey by Labete 2022-04-05T20:31:44Z

Interesting concept, but I agree with Tadas, I seemed to be doing most things wrong and still won.

Definitely not Titanic by Charles Viau 2022-04-06T03:14:19Z

Really enjoyed this haha great entry

Somnipathy by Cyzaine 2022-04-16T04:30:25Z

Great job on the atmosphere here, I'm glad to see you're looking to expand on this concept in the future. Gameplay definitely a little lacking in terms of depth but I enjoyed playing it.

You will be squished. by Alex Garbus 2022-04-04T17:59:42Z

Cute little game, managed to get to 8. The character can be a little tough to control and the audio is a little loud but everything else is really polished.

Color Entropy by knexator 2022-04-04T22:26:32Z

Really excellent twist on the theme, I admittedly had trouble understanding what I was doing but the overall aesthetic is very nice!

ALL IS LOST by Miime 2022-04-04T19:13:26Z

Seems a little too easy since the penalty for catching the wrong color trash is fairly low but overall I liked it! Music was very fitting.

phon-ey wars by usernam_e 2022-04-04T21:10:46Z

Reminds me of something I'd find on scratch. Also pretty sure it's possible to never lose once you get enough stuff. But good stuff man, doing the compo in something besides Unity is not easy!

Enlit by HGJake 2022-04-04T18:04:30Z

Really love the atmosphere in this one

Gladiator Graveyard by tahamimarlar 2022-04-04T21:02:33Z

Art is great and overall it feels really polished - sometimes the mouse cursor gets lost in the sand and I forget where I'm aiming exactly. Got to 77 seconds!

(also not to dismiss the other guy's claims but I found pressing shift to dash perfectly natural for me)

Calcium Carnage by cactusdan 2022-04-04T19:01:14Z

The big mouse cursor kind of gets in the way of aiming at enemies and the long hallway on the left is a bit of a death trap, but enjoyed the game otherwise

Calcium Carnage by cactusdan 2022-04-04T19:24:47Z

@cactusdan oh very cool, that makes more sense

LD51 — Every 10 seconds

Helping by MossGames 2022-10-04T17:18:20Z

Nice concept, I am little confused though, does the game never end? Good job though!

Speed Barber by PhoenixofForce 2022-10-03T22:18:13Z

Love to see a fellow SDL2 dev in Ludum Dare! Nice concept, sometimes it felt really random whether or not I was going to get a good score, but this was fun. Reminded me a lot of the Mario Party minigame where you trace a picture!

The Hellchemist by ThorPalsson 2022-10-07T02:28:59Z

Definitely see the Quake/Doom influence here, not just in graphics but in character design and whatnot. I think a crosshair as well as maybe a better sound effect for the wand shoot would be nice improvements, but overall like this a lot! Also the online scoreboard is a super nice touch.

Machine Learning by tylerstraub 2022-10-03T20:20:17Z

@pianoman373 thanks for the feedback. i was worried about that section being too difficult but didn't have much time to test. the latest download tweaked that area to make it a little more forgiving

Machine Learning by tylerstraub 2022-10-04T19:52:23Z

@phoenixofforce @mistagiggles @d34th0ftit4n5 @kory @vykri Thanks everyone for the feedback. That was definitely a gameplay decision I was not sure which direction to go, as I wasn't sure if resetting the timer at each checkpoint strayed from the theme too much. In hindsight, it would've been a much nicer QOL improvement.

Machine Learning by tylerstraub 2022-10-06T04:24:19Z

@jose-bonilla @lustdante @climbing-dolphin Thank you all for the comments!

@codsalmon @kory @phoenixofforce Since people seem to be enjoying this game and there have been a few requests, I have uploaded version 1.0.2 which introduces the timer resetting every time you touch a checkpoint. Hopefully this improves quality of life a bit. Thought I would ping you all again in case you wanted to try again with the new changes!

Machine Learning by tylerstraub 2022-10-07T22:48:12Z

@serxiolas Thank you, there actually is coyote time of 4 ticks I believe (so like 67ms). Not sure what the "standard" is and if what I did wasn't lenient enough. I appreciate the feedback for the ceiling touching though!

Robo-Clash 1999 by JHax 2022-10-04T18:10:35Z

Really great idea and execution, obviously the AI could be better but that's a lot to ask in 72 hours, just wish I had someone to play this with haha! The polish on this is really great.

Déka! by spyranteros 2022-10-06T18:21:26Z

Really excellent use of the theme and a unique idea for a puzzle game as well. I'm not sure what to think of the randomized starts still, but it certainly keeps things fresh and helps reset things when you're stuck.

Water Drop by Stealcase 2022-10-06T18:17:48Z

Nice aesthetic, kind of reminds me of the horror game Ao Oni weirdly enough. I also managed to find a bug where if you enter a door then immediately go back into the door it will spawn you out of bounds.

Midnight Game Child by MistaGiggles 2022-10-03T22:33:05Z

This is really awesome, especially the voice acting haha. The only complaint I really have is the platforming could be a little tighter + the final boss moved a little too slow, but overall one of my fav entries so far

Finest Urban Planning by Fnessa 2022-10-04T20:13:09Z

Like the vibe, a lot of the platforming can be really frustrating though and the sensitivity (on 800 DPI) was insanely high. Music is on point though

Dichotomy by StudioCherno 2022-10-07T01:54:00Z

Very nice polish on this game, like others have mentioned the mechanic of trial and error become sort of frustrating as it felt like completing levels was not based on skill but rather brute force. Very nice otherwise!

PolyGone by LabToast 2022-10-04T17:22:10Z

Some cool ideas here that force you to think a bit. More levels would've been really awesome!

Vamplight by ShauKaula 2022-10-07T02:01:15Z

Agree with others, hard to tell where light sections are/where you are safe. Game also seemed to get stuck for me not super far in, not really sure what bug was but I couldn't get past a ledge near a lamp while the screen shook endlessly. Art though is quite good!

10 Second Defence by ZLuca 2022-10-04T17:29:50Z

I placed a lot of units down but they don't seem to attack anything. Feels like I'm doing something wrong but I have no clue really.

Seasonaut by EvilMurlock 2022-10-06T18:13:17Z

Cute game, the graphics are nice and the addition of music is cool. It would be fun if the resources you needed increased per turn, as the challenge is pretty low once you get into the flow of things. Also maybe hide the debug console for the release build!

Another LAST 10 seconds by Serxiolas 2022-10-07T01:42:10Z

I now feel more qualified than before to disarm a bomb IRL, thank you

TRY TO DODGE by Sigma-G 2022-10-03T22:13:14Z

nicely done, good polish for only 1 day! the current enemies are all unique and cool, more variety would've been the next step but only so much time in a jam. some sound would've also been good

Meteoriseten by Igor Morgun 2022-10-04T17:34:36Z

Nice work, background is nice and music is great. I will agree that I think more gameplay would be good, especially since I was able to go all the way to the right and just hide from the meteors. Some enemies walking around would negate that (and give a reason for jumping!)
