Took awhile but I did succesfully get a card through, woot!

brandann 2020-04-20 23:11

The resolution was way too small on a high res screen, I turned down my resolution and it was better but still very small! also, the right-click didn't seem to do anything, your console made note of MANY failed to load messages... hopefully this is just a small bug you fix real quick and get some good votes in!

tylerstraub 2020-04-21 05:34

@brandann i made this on a 1080p monitor so didn’t foresee that issue unfortunately. also didn’t realize the console was showing - oops

chaseplays 2020-04-21 08:05

I got through a few levels and really liked the puzzle concept you created! With some polish and expansion on the concept you could have a really fun game like Sudoku, Minesweeper, Solitaire, etc. to open and play a few levels of. Sadly, the framerate was abysmally low for me, and I wasn't able to get to the end since after about 3 levels the game crashed, but let me know if you fix up the resolution/fps and I'd love come back and finish the rest of it!

tylerstraub 2020-04-21 14:16

@chaseplays thanks, although i didn't really come up with the puzzle concept (look up binary puzzles). i will look into optimizations today or tomorrow as i didn't realize it might have issues running on lower end computers

tylerstraub 2020-04-21 16:47

@chaseplays hey i made optimizations to how the audio was loaded - if you have the time let me know if it runs better!

chaseplays 2020-04-21 18:33

Okay, I've played through the whole game now, and I liked it a lot! I originally thought you only had to avoid having 3 punched holes in a row, so I got stuck for a while before realizing that you also had to avoid 3 unpunched holes, but other than that everything was intuitive and fun!

In terms of optimization, I didn't realize that there were 2 different versions (windowed and fullscreen), and it looks like the fullscreen version was what was giving me trouble (both before and after it was optimized). My computer's pretty good, so I don't think it was a problem with lower-end computers, but I have two monitors so that might have been a problem. Otherwise, the windowed version worked perfectly, so I was able to finish without any problems! Thanks for looking into it!

tylerstraub 2020-04-21 20:21

@chaseplays ah weird, i tested on a single monitor so had no clue. glad to hear though!

I like the Alan Turing feel. Lets all thank Alan Turing for a moment here

kaeveris 2020-04-22 17:35

The idea is very cool and original! I do feel the card is too small on the screen

isayneigh 2020-04-23 01:15

I really love a good puzzle game. I enjoyed this. The audio was incredibly immersive, especially for something so simple. I don't have much valuable feedback other than it'd be cool to see this built out into a full fledged game, maybe a simple puzzle game on Steam for $1.99.

Maybe the graphics could be improved? Idk, it doesn't seem too important to this genre but I could see it bothering some people.

Great game!

tylerstraub 2020-04-23 01:44

@isayneigh thanks! graphics were definitely the lowest priority unfortunately, as i spent the majority of the time polishing the game mechanics. if i were to work on it more, the graphics would for sure get a major overhaul

sztrovacsek 2020-04-23 12:34

I'm also using a hidpi screen, and can confirm that everything is too small. I couldn't really play, since the RMB didn't do anything with the card (I tried both the windowed and fullscreen version), so I could only insert a wrong one to the machine. But it seems like a good concept, also I like the programmer art.

tylerstraub 2020-04-23 15:45

@sztrovacsek by any chance did you try dragging the punch card to the right side of the screen? That expands the card to a larger size

sztrovacsek 2020-04-23 15:58

Oh, shoot, how did I miss that? Now it works, thank you!

tylerstraub 2020-04-23 16:40

@sztrovacsek haha no problem. when you mentioned the right click didn't do anything i was like wait a minute

mantou 2020-04-25 13:59

A vary nice puzzle game! I love it, although I don't understand what has to do with the theme.

draklaw 2020-04-25 14:54

Nice puzzle game. A bit too repetitive, it might have been fine to find a way to add diversity because it feels like doing the same puzzle again and again. However I know puzzle games are hard to design and you did a pretty good job. Also I like the theme.

tylerstraub 2020-04-25 20:45

@mantou thanks! the theme idea was to keep the computer "alive" and running, also some dumb metaphor about keeping legacy machines alive.

@draklaw yeah i was not able to come up with a core design concept until the last day so the puzzles were not very fleshed out

baylej 2020-04-30 08:32

I must be dumb, I don't understand the rules, do the blacked out boxes count as punched or unpunched holes? Nevermind, blacked (blued?) out boxes count as holes.

tylerstraub 2020-04-30 21:52

@baylej hey, yeah you got it - the blue holes are just the pre-punched holes that you can't change. the black ones indicated that you punched them.

link 2020-05-10 16:35

I took some minute to understand all the rules, but then I did it. The idea is really nice. I would suggest only one thing: change the color for blue boxes: it's hard do distinguish blue and black (maybe a lighter blue?). Nice job!
