LD43 — Sacrifices must be made

Amethyst by srakowski 2018-12-09T23:56:57Z

Hm, my game is also stuck as a window and bigger than my screen! But I managed to play it anyways.

Several suggestions: (1) I would appreciate a "start" button or some other mechanism (at least start the timer once you start to move, not when the game just loaded), (2) for me, the red stones were way too frequent, not allowing much of exploring :/

Besides that it's a very interesting game, I do like having to collect two colours of gems to combine them, falling through the platforms down the tunnel and avoiding the shards. :) It's good that they also have a sound so that you are warned ahead!

Colors of Your World by DDRKirbyISQ 2018-12-16T04:03:21Z

Oh, hi! We talked a bit about some of your older games some time ago, and since this is my very first time participating in LD, I did not realize I could run into you here! So I knew I had to try your new game for sure. C:

Impressions as I was playing through (at first compo version, then updated version from stars):

The colour scheme is really pleasant to look at! So soft and subtle. Playable character is adorable and jumping on/from mushrooms is really fun. I do wonder what will be the sacrifice theme in such a happy peaceful world, though! (...) Are those... flying bird butts? (...) Ohh, a new ability! The "dash" animation is great. :3 But oh no. This will become really depressing to look at really soon, won't it? (...) I've dashed myself into the starts more times than I'd like to admit. :D But the controls are still fun. I appreciate that it saves so often, otherwise it could get frustrating. (...) I got stuck on the (first?) waterfall. But I'm not very skilled player so I imagine others can go through just fine. :)

A small detail you couldn't have possibly known, but on my non-English (Czech) keyboard, Z is reversed with Y and therefore it's really far from X and hard to use. I can switch them though, so it's not a big issue. Maybe just an interesting fact. :)

Overall I really enjoyed it!

A Walk In The Neighborhood by aeveis 2018-12-10T00:26:14Z

I loved the art! The doggo was incredibly cute and the running animation as well, I spent quite a lot of time just running around for the fun of it. It also had great audio and I appreciated that the sacrifices were rewarded (if it ended in hell, I'd personally not like the moral of the story very much).

As a short story, it was very sweet, but I did kind of hope it would be interactive. Right now it wouldn't make much of a difference if it was "just" a cute animated story. I guess that's why it didn't really feel like a game. But it was still a very nice experience. :)

A Walk In The Neighborhood by aeveis 2018-12-14T23:42:11Z

Hm, the moral of the story... on one hand, it might be that helping others doesn't have to benefit you, but in the end, it's still the "right" choice. Basically that if you help for the sake of helping and not expect anything in return, it's valuable. And in-game, it gets a delayed reward that the doggo couldn't anticipate so you can see the doggo just helped purely out of good will.

On the other hand, it could be that sacrificing too much for others is risky and you should take yourself in consideration too. That's how it felt before the final step (in hell), anyways!

Ludum Dare: The Game by pantoufle 2018-12-05T00:05:53Z

3 tries to get all 5*, why isn't real life so simple? :D Great simulator. :)

Saving Oskar by markusfisch 2018-12-05T23:14:02Z

First impression: Oh no! He's crying. D: I gotta save Oskar next time.

I did not manage to win, but I have tried several times, sneaking, running, sneaking again. It's simple but fun and the art fits it really well.

Ethereal by foodzilla 2018-12-04T13:17:43Z

Right now I got stuck at "HURT", but I'll share my impressions up to that point: I love the music! It's beautiful and calming. Definitely worth the time spent! The graphics could be slightly "softer" to match it as well (rounder? muted colours or a limited color scheme?), but the minimalist design fits it as it is, I think. Can you @ me if you expand it with more levels?

And since you were talking about expanding: I would appreciate an addition of optional hints/tips for what the various types of boxes do, or (if you add many more levels) having one simple "tutorial" level introducing each new function. But that's for larger scope than a game jam! As for the level "HURT", though, there's another small thing I ran into: I don't quite know how it works, but it seems to only partially restart (you get sucked into the black hole and re-appear in the corner – I thought that's a regular restart at first, and only later I noticed that the blue and green timers didn't re-appear as well). It's definitely just a detail, but it could be a little confusing, unless I misunderstood.

Anyways, it really is nice and I'm impressed you made it in such a short time!

*Edit: Passed "HURT"!*

Mindu's Hope by Bendev_Games 2018-12-05T22:15:16Z

HTML also didn't work for me, but the Windows version is fine, and really fun! The controls are so simple and yet it can be really challenging to pass the level. Plus it fits the theme perfectly. Well done!

Sacré Bleu by resivium 2018-12-05T22:58:28Z

I seem to be stuck right before the end! (After opening green doors.) 25 boys died already but I'll try a few more times and write a more detailed feedback after that. But I'm pretty sure I'll be giving this all 5*.

Sacré Bleu by resivium 2018-12-05T23:06:41Z

Got it! :D That was really smart. I loved all of the puzzles, especially the green doors though. I think this is one of my top 3 games from the LD43 entries I have tried so far! If you ever team up again to expand the game, please let me know, it's a really great concept.

I have two points of criticism (hopefully constructive!):

• When you move by one arrow click, the transition, especially with the light moving, is a little harsh and flashy. Of course, that problem disappears with the shoes! But a smoother move would be more pleasant to look at, I think. Then again it could be a stylistic choice.

• And I do agree with one of the commenters above that the death sound is a bit too gruesome, so I had a dilemma of hearing the neat soundtrack vs avoiding the sound effect.

Oh, I also found one typo ("you poor the water").

But back to what I enjoyed: the graphics and soundtrack really set the mood. The concept fits the theme really well and the little skeleton leftovers make the sacrifices feel more "real" than just a counter. Overall I would recommend this game to anyone that enjoys exploring/puzzle games!

Sacrificial Forest Friends by TheCrittersCove 2018-12-04T12:42:07Z

I liked that the mouse button instructions were color-coded. :) Thanks to that, it was very easy to control from the start! And nothing distracted from gameplay. One thing that took me a while was noticing the lightning bar, I think I would have liked it more if all bars were aligned on top of each other or next to each other, but that's just a visual detail. And my first summoning was a hellhound! How many creatures are there?

Nature is Harsh by hav24 2018-12-08T14:27:47Z

Wow! The voice-over along with the camera framing turn it into something so much more interesting than "just" a platformer. I did not expect it to be a "fake" voice either, it sounds really good! I love that you named the poor sacrificed babies. And the arrow + ladder is brutal but such an interesting mechanic.

Sacriflag by yopox 2018-12-04T15:06:24Z

First impression: a great concept! Really nice use of the theme. :)

Now for pros:

• I like the various levels with increasing/different challenges,

• The sound is nice and not distracting,

• The concept is interesting but also challenging, it lives up to the "puzzle" genre!

*

And for some cons (or – hopefully constructive – criticism):

• I guess it's the price of the game's relatively complex mechanics, but the control keys are not very intuitive,

• And (this might just be me, though) I also find the arrows vs directions in-game slightly confusing (I went the wrong direction a few times because in-game, it felt like "up", but it wasn't)

And I think that's it! Overall I think you've done a great job with a unique idea and it's been enjoyable when trying to solve it. :)

HMS Sacrifice by scottgoldsmith 2018-12-04T14:51:38Z

27/28! :D I'll get them all, one day ...

Pros:

• It's different every time => it's more fun!

• You don't have to sacrifice others, just yourself, which is refreshing compared to the usual take on the theme.

• Simple but nice graphics.

*

Cons:

• I don't know if I overlooked them somewhere, but I wish control instructions were mentioned, or if you allowed using arrows! I'm personally more used to those than letters.

• Some sound effects/music would be fun, but I liked it without them anyways. :)

Harvest Defense by BrazMogu 2018-12-05T00:52:52Z

Hm... the idea is really neat. Having to wait for the better towers is good too. But I don't know if it's just me or if the game could use some difficulty balancing? Before any tower grows, the seed loses lots of HP, so I'm not sure if I should destroy the towers and move them (fewer of them, though) closer/in line, it's just a little discouraging that before I can do anything, it's half lost. But maybe there's a strategy I haven't figured out yet! Another option would be slightly slower start... but admittedly, I am the kind of person that plays on easy mode to get used to the game before upping the difficulty. :)

Then there's one more thing; I think an addition of start/end menu would really improve the experience. It would be a nice alternative to the game window just closing (I'm using regular Windows version). But I don't know if that's easy to do with the software you used.

The Life Goes On by Dino_jr 2018-12-05T00:30:04Z

The first puzzle took me forever! (I got stuck because I did not realize one should carry the other.) It was also the first moment I started to have doubts if I can finish the game, as it got really dark real fast.

But *then* it got funny; the way you get stuck (unable to move) if A carries B and you become B. And it's somehow even funnier running around, trying to throw a pixelbaby over a wall. A very literal take on the theme, well done! I didn't form much of an attachment to the characters which made giving them up easier, I'm not sure if that was intentional. On the other hand, I really enjoyed the controls (carrying, throwing, following, swapping), it's very intuitive! One thing I forgot is the option to age, it would be nice to have a menu with all keys so that you could refresh on the available options, and maybe that would help people solve the puzzles faster. But maybe the additional challenge is good.

Juice Maker by MistySouls 2018-12-04T21:51:59Z

Oh, you could update the link to highlight that the game can be played in browser! :) That's always a plus.

For reference: I played it in browser, with mouse and on my own!

I love the grabbing animation and the way the little fruits cling together. At one point I had a cluster of about 5-6 fruits just flying around! The weakened (?) gravity makes the animation even more fun to watch. And their changing expressions make the game so much more charming than if it was "just" a food simulator. It's so cute that it almost doesn't feel wrong to sacrifice the smols.

EDIT: Please, consider making a longer version and/or time-unrestricted version! I just tried it with my wife-to-be and we had lots of fun, but the timer kind of cuts the fun short, especially with the slow keyboard controls. But the bouncy animation is wonderful

Consilium - A history of life and choices by Gaming Night 2018-12-07T18:46:02Z

So... this game is just beautiful. The use of theme is lovely, the art is really pretty, it doesn't need a tutorial because it's all shown on the first playthrough. It doesn't take very long to figure out that you have to use specific elements depending on the stage (I was only confused by the sun, thinking it would be used earlier!). The colour coding of various buildings with their elements is a bit too subtle and may not be color-blind friendly, but you can figure it out from what the buildings are (windmill etc.) so I don't think it's a big issue. Plus, the soft colours are really pleasant to look at!!

One thing I would like would be if long-term harmonized society allowed some benefit, e.g. slower change of the stage of development, so that the end would be less hectic! I had all 9 squares as tress/villages for the second half, but in the end it was changing so fast, the timer run out as I had only 2 forest tiles and nothing else, which was a little disappointing. But I can imagine such balancing would require a lot more time!

I'm giving this all 5*. :)

Ludum Dare: The Game by Darylsteak 2018-12-04T21:33:42Z

Ohh! Does art imitate life, or does life imitate art? I liked it! The Code/Cut weren't clear to me at first so I kept on cutting and wondering why it's not helping me progress. (I imagined it as "cut away the excess".) Then I figured it out, and the balancing began!

I'm wondering, are there any secret rewards for doing the popup activities, or does the game reward more if you don't go, by letting you have time?

And I don't know if this was suggested before as there are many comments already (no wonder, it's such a fun/frustrating simulator!), but one small thing I would change is the order of eat/sleep/game and hunger/motivation/sleep so that they would be the same, it would be slightly easier to navigate.

I do like how it fits the theme really well, too!

Volcano Island by Arvejeitor 2018-12-07T19:23:32Z

First try, score: 3600. Not bad, I hope? :D I enjoyed everything from the game mechanics and art to sound selection (besides the guy falling in, for the peaceful mood that was a little harsh). Well done!

Lava Luva by mcovert 2018-12-04T13:57:15Z

It took me a while to get the hang of it so I was really confused by the people saying it's very easy! Then, once the economy picked up, it did get easy, but the start is equally easy to mess up. One thing I didn't enjoy was waiting for people to appear (and searching for them), but other than that it's been really fun and I replayed it several times! If there were sound effects, I would mostly appreciate a sound for lava destroying something (building/disabling a production) and for new people appearing. :)

Startup Simulator 2019 by Benjamin San Souci 2018-12-08T02:17:01Z

"May our future robot overlord have mercy on your pitiful mind." (...) "I pay them to type, not to wipe!" (...) " doaa;nt theink your pelnmployees are xmajture enoughhh to-" (...) "We were recently informed that our employees are people too!"

Love the writing, seriously. You've outdone yourself on the dialogues and giving everyone a personality!

My record so far was 35 quarters. Oh, and the other kind of record was -300k. :D

Stjarna Höfuð by gamebuilder 2018-12-05T23:47:53Z

I have so many questions! But two most pressing ones, why is it a head? And secondly, what's the black screen mode for? I managed to not "die" on second try, but then it just became a game of sitting back and watching the head bouncing around, and the screens changing from "day" to "night" and back. I do not know what was going on or why the head ended up shrinking every time the screens changed, but some stars remained enormous! Was it random or am I just missing something?

Besides that, congratulations on finishing a functional game and setting up a relatively complex mechanics!

Not Me! by Gio- 2018-12-07T19:07:41Z

Hm... I also o wish we got 1 hint at the start, the descriptions are mostly jokes/references which makes it hard to pick who to sacrifice for the clue. Then again... I thought it would be a list of suspects with more information about them, so that's why I was surprised they are just blank people. For that reason I did not enjoy guessing with blood type as that seemed very random, but that's all for the criticism! Overall it was a very fun experience and I'm looking forward to the updated version. :)

Var'alith by Akuirako 2018-12-04T14:40:18Z

I ran into that problem (mentioned above) several times, but then I actually managed to get to one ending (arrest)! Is it possible to go around the bug by enlarging the area that's just the first card by a few more pixels (by moving the other one lower down?) so that it would be easier to not miss? If there's no way to move the first card to the top layer...

Now as for the game itself, I really like the pixel art and the mood it has, you can just feel the growing tension as you run out of time. :) If you find some solution/workaround to the known bug, I think it will be a really impressive game!

Var'alith by Akuirako 2018-12-04T21:38:59Z

Ohh, I got to another end (failing, but it was fun!). So I have a question! It's spoiler-y but I would really like to know: is there a right option for the kid? I thought I tried everything by now, but maybe I'm still missing something. Also, I really like how the art of the cards tells more of the story behind each person.

Var'alith by Akuirako 2018-12-04T22:30:00Z

@mercilesscult Oh! I would have sworn I tried that, but it works, thanks! And I don't think it's "too" difficult, some of the cards are more obvious, some have several interpretations so it's a trial-and-error, I would say that's what makes it fun and what makes you want to play it again.

Destroy All Cubes! by Danny Sun 2018-12-05T22:32:52Z

1st try: 10 trophies, 433 destroyed. Second game restarted on me (online) but I tried again: 23 trophies, 626 destroyed. :D It works quite well! I went with the "beam" strategy instead of clicking, and that got me thinking that aiming an actual beam may have been more effective for this type of a game... but yeah, it's fun! The audio gets a little overwhelming so I just switched it off, but that's to be expected with repetitive actions.

Labrats by Matank 2018-12-06T23:37:38Z

Impressions as I played through it: Calling the player!rat "far more intelligent than anything else tested before", that's a cute way to start. :D I love the dialogue ("Perhaps we should stop here for today?" definitely reflects my thoughts re:the substance!) and I'm looking forward to the next exchange between the scientists (?). My first failure was level 3. I didn't anticipate the way you used the theme, but combined with the ability and color gates, that's really clever! I like that you made it visually clear which doors will stay open. The death animation feels more tragic than if they just disappeared.

Impressions after: Others have commented on liking the mechanics already and I agree with them, but I especially have to point out (spoilers ahead, of course) that I *really* like the fact that we are, in fact, helping the rats. Morally speaking it feels more right, but it's also nice because it's not quite clear in the first levels and it's like a tiny plot twist.

It's also very nice of you to work on the color-blind friendly version! Did you decide how to do that yet? With some shapes/textures or just more contrast, for example?

One tiny criticism (and that's pretty much all I can think of!): it starts silent so I turned my volume up, as I've read there should be audio, and then there was a very sudden loud sound. It's mostly a mistake on my part, but I guess it could happen to others as well. Besides that, the sound effects and intensifying music fit really well!

Spelleton: Skellord's Domain by Five Side Studios 2018-12-04T15:12:14Z

This is the kind of quality I would not expect from a game jam (no offense to other participants)! I'm not good at playing it so I only got 2 cats (and then lost them to an invisible enemy :/), but I really like the art, the maps, the catchy sound and all the graphics in it. I'm still figuring out how exactly the E/R commands work, but it's great to have them all permanently shown on the screen. And the skelefriends are really cute!

***Thank you, @ everyone who took their time to provide feedback!***

***And even if you didn't comment, thank you for testing our game.***

@unplugred Thank you so much! I did originally imagine it as 3x3 choices + 3 endings and expanding if there's time left, and yet in the end I even had to shorten the last choice. It seems the length is a common "complaint", but in a way I'm glad, if it was a terrible game, I guess people would be happy it's over.

@thecritterscove Thank you! And you chose very well, then. c:

Deity Hook-Up (Not A Romance) by ynneblack 2018-12-05T23:54:52Z

@eatatjoes Thank you for your feedback, and for saying so nice things!! I'm really happy to hear you enjoyed it. :) As for the good ending, do you mean it was unnecessarily hard to achieve? I would be interested in hearing more about your choices that lead/didn't lead to it, as to me – as the creator – the paths and point system are really hard to evaluate from outside perspective! And the game may not be completely transparent in showing what's the best choice each time... anyways, thanks again!

Deity Hook-Up (Not A Romance) by ynneblack 2018-12-06T00:14:06Z

@matank Thank you! ;; Also, woah. 5 minutes? I hoped it would take at least a little bit longer, but also well done on choosing well enough to get all the options so fast! It's really sweet of you to say, very encouraging. :)

@maruki Thank you! :) I'm glad you were happy with it, you did well, after all!

On a side note, neither of us is a native speaker; we *were* worried people would yell at us over some glaring mistakes. As long as it didn't distract from the experience, it should be okay... but **if anyone spots some mistake** (awkward wording, grammar, typos... anything), please do feel free to point it out, it would help us a lot!

Deity Hook-Up (Not A Romance) by ynneblack 2018-12-10T20:54:19Z

@coleslaughter Thank you so much for such a detailed feedback!!

We tried to hint through the messages what was well received, but I did not want to make it as a "visible score". If I imagine myself in the situation, it felt like there should be some guessing involved. If you don't mind me spoiling it, each choice gave you (or took away) points; the main 3-choice offerings had one great (+2), one good (+1) and one bad (-2) choice. That's why most not-quite-good but not-outright-rude choices would lead to the "neutral" ending. :) There was also another score the game kept track of, so if you chose the wrong option x times, you would get locked out of the best ending. That seemed fair; it was a choice the Deity outright disliked, so they would not want to reward you.

I hope it makes a little more sense now!

@ghost-in-the-toast @dreafskii Thank you!

Deity Hook-Up (Not A Romance) by ynneblack 2018-12-14T23:49:55Z

@aeveis The spoon is actually a reference of sorts we did not expect many people to understand, but it was important for us to include. :) Thank you for playing several times and congrats on reaching all the endings!

These are interesting thoughts indeed. You could say that if you are making a request like this, it's entirely your responsibility to ask well; so for example, the thing you mentioned is an obvious downside and the teacher asking about something later could ruin the whole plan. But if you asked for whispered hints until you passed all of your classes, maybe it would work better! So it's up to the person to word it carefully and really think through the possible outcomes, perhaps.

Slime MUST Survive by NinjaCatz 2018-12-06T22:52:20Z

So I didn't make it very far, I think the start of the first level should be just *slightly* easier to ease the player into using the controls and such, but for more patient/advanced players, it shouldn't be a problem. I liked the intro, the slime animation was adorable, the sounds were picked well and it fits the theme, so well done! :)

Super Space Meltdown by EatAtJoes 2018-12-06T00:41:09Z

*Some things I especially liked:* that you can fall at the very beginning and it's not over, it just takes some patience to get back up! (and that seems to repeat through the game, I really like the layers and spacing, plus it fits the universe settings when it's so... vertical); the markers for all moving platforms (especially needed with limited vision); the green arrow always showing the direction; that extra layer of stars that gave the background more depth. :) And of course, how well it fits the LD theme!

I did not manage to win the game yet, but I've really enjoyed trying. I am not very patient but it felt like the game kept on giving me many chances. Oh, also, I never knew how much I would miss the ability to jump "backwards"!

It's a great game. :)

Hire Power by Yoni 2018-12-06T23:10:37Z

Suggestion: subtitles would be helpful for the voice-acted parts, even though the voice acting is wonderful. :) I really liked the tutorial levels! Most people don't make any tutorial, from what I've seen so far – probably because of time limitations – but I'm glad your team managed to prioritize it as it makes learning to use the game easy and fun.

I think I ran into a bug during level 1-6 btw. I messed up and failed, but when I pressed shift+R, it just repeated followers death screams. :D Funny effect though.

It's really well done and the idea is great!

Santa's List by koltzow 2018-12-05T23:32:06Z

46 days left over 69 dead bodies. Wow. It's definitely dark; the audio fits very well, I would say, makes the mood even heavier. I've got mixed feelings about playing to the end. If a piece of entertainment makes one think and feel things and question what they do in a virtual world... I'd say it's a success. Oh, and making their condition visible was a good "detail" – makes it feel all the more terrible. (Which is a good thing in this case! Doing this *should* feel bad.)

Slimy abilities by kinuni 2018-12-05T21:23:00Z

CHARON by fletch arrow 2018-12-07T18:11:01Z

Ah, I was excited to play another choice-based LD game made in Ren'Py!

First of all, I really like that you came up with various combinations so that it could be replayed if one failed or just wanted to play again. The portraits are pretty and the simple graphics seem to fit the settings. Interacting with the game by commands was also interesting, even though it's not my preferred method, it fit the story so I liked it. I would suggest allowing only using the persons first names ("/inspect john", "/end john") to make it faster to re-type, though, as one might want to re-read their information!

cakewalk by ohsqueezy 2019-10-13T20:06:12Z

I wasn't able to finish it either but I enjoyed the concept. Not sure how it goes with theme (? I might be missing sth), but I really like that you made a single-button controls work. The music & "ouch!" were cute.

Fireflies Will Find My Bones by 0x01F0 2019-10-20T03:34:42Z

The character reminded me of Eva from Wall-E, but in more of Ori style. :) I hope you will create some larger game in these settings & with this character, it's beautiful.

Please Move by aeveis 2019-10-20T02:33:18Z

I must be the only one since others succeeded, but please help me out, how do I move anywhere? I don't seem able to walk past the walls, no matter if they are moving towards or away from me and if they are extended or just by the edges, so I'm missing something obvious but I can't figure it out.

Nothing to Say by celia14 2019-10-17T20:37:47Z

Does the "small talk isn't your thing" only appear when you didn't get any heart on that try, so that you'd get 1 heart anyways? :0 When I had just a few letters missing, nothing seemed to generate new hearts even though I went through newly unlocked menu options, so I got this message many times in a row.

I tried to get all the possible responses (Pumpkin! ♥) and I loved the reaction to the picnic. The mechanic was relatively simple but it was somewhat addictive and I wanted to unlock the "I want to tell you something" option, so I kept on playing until I did. :) I wish there was a speedup/skip button, but since clicking moved it to the next line automatically and the dialogue was quite short, it wasn't a big problem. I really like that she had different expressions and the talking animation, it helped a lot with making the scene interesting, a static image might have become boring after a few rounds, but this was just fine. It'd be nice to have a sound effect when a new heart was given! But since the text box changed color, too, it was obvious enough and it felt very rewarding!

Deboned by Sarah 2019-10-13T21:57:10Z

The currency button doesn't look clickable so I was a little stuck on how to sell the pumpkin, and then I had to search the comments to find out how recipes work as there is no hint placement matters. That's pretty much all criticism I have! I got stuck on making a pie and 9-seeds recipe, but I'll come back to it later and try to find more combinations. :) The art is very cute and I *love* the whole concept. I thought it'd be exploration game so the gardening, cooking and selling were a nice, unexpected twist! And the ghost is just adorable, I'd hug them. The carved pumpkins were great, too! Though perhaps you should still get some seeds? :) And I'm really happy to have found a Halloween-themed game. It's the best holiday!

Deboned by Sarah 2019-10-17T14:14:08Z

So I played it again, with my partner, and we agreed that the time feels like a timer and adds stress but doesn't actually seem to do anything? Maybe just having Day X written there would be enough, since we can see the time changing by the changing skies. But that's just a detail, coming from two people who hate timed games!

As for the recipes, though, we gave up after the pie & 9 seeds. Trying all the combinations with no hints in-game was taking a lot of time, it probably takes more patient players or luck to discover them. I'd really like simpler combinations (4 of slices, 6 of slices, 3 slices+3 seeds, ...) where the placement doesn't matter, or the option to buy the recipes.

Other than that, we both really like the concept and thought it's super cute, so if you ever do a post-jam version, we'd both definitely want to play it again!

Survivor Slots by PeachTreeOath 2019-10-13T19:36:49Z

So the tutorial confused me a lot; it showed one window with the task, but then the game started, I got a bunch of quests that had slightly different format with no instruction (do I have to do them in order? what will happen when I use this one and not this one? how can I do 2-person quests with 3 people? etc.), and there were additional, unexplained things on the screen. Perhaps the tutorial should look exactly the same as the game does? I also didn't quite get why the quest I did didn't work, until I realized you have to have rats present to use the "build rat trap" button. :/ I thought that I should build it ahead since there would be rats the next day.

But after restarting it and when I already had some idea what to do, it got more fun. Lots of planning needed, for sure. I got killed by demon gorilla, but it was enjoyable! I liked how the difficulty gradually went up.

You Gotta Be Kitten Me by Silas Reinagel 2019-10-09T03:28:10Z

I kept on dashing myself into the void because I thought I could turn mid-dash and it wasn't working, that was fun. I like that the cat had 9 lives. The idea is fun as well, it's always great to help animals escape cruel humans! And it fit the theme with the additional skills. Perhaps an option to skip the intro animation would be nice (though it is great and I enjoyed it during the first play).

Higher Desire by ColeSlaughter 2019-10-10T20:43:46Z

I don't seem able to finish the game, I got stuck after maybe defeating (it was really close so I am not sure) a huge balloon, with 1 bar not full (and it says RANK: Cheeramid)? I could do everything, breathe and shoot, but nothing happened after.

Now as for the rest of the game, it was really fun! I liked the breathing and trying to time it right; it definitely added some difficulty/complexity. The heartbeat was a little distracting, but the music/other sounds all fit very nicely. And the art, oh, it's beautiful, when the game froze at the end I enjoyed just watching the clouds pass by. And the idea itself is really nice! It fits the theme but not in the most obvious way. You've all done a great job. :)

Magic Escape by Xephrys 2019-10-13T20:47:40Z

Could you make the itch.io embedded game smaller by default? It extends beyond my screen. :/ The music is nice and lowkey spooky, I'm surprised you had time to make custom cursor & the color palette is just great! Overall I'm surprised at the art for a compo (!) game. The hidden scissors were nice. I got stuck after collecting those, giving rat to the cat, finding a log, using scissors to get one fruit and getting scroll, bottle and seeds, I didn't seem able to throw stuff into the potion and couldn't find anything else clickable.

Magic Escape by Xephrys 2019-10-13T22:17:16Z

@xephrys Ah, I knew I missed something obvious! I went back and finished it. :) The endless key collection is a fun bug and the tiny frog is adorable. I really liked that the escape had a set theme and you were collecting ingredients before you even knew it, it wraps it up nicely!

Pie Witch by jandourek 2019-10-17T20:14:12Z

What I enjoyed: * The idea is great. I enjoy collecting & crafting games and this has the witchy theme on top. :) * The art is super cute! * I really like that the active items/things you can interact with have a black outline, it makes it so much easier to play. Overall the style is great. * The cave presents nice additional environments, it ends up quite varied! * The color scheme is really pleasant and along with the music, it makes it feel very relaxing even though you are attacking monsters. * A meaty chocolate pie with caramel sounds absolutely disgusting and I do not know why I made that. :D It's great you made it possible to mix everything with everything to generate all these options. * I like that the screens reset when you re-enter them so that you don't have to "die" to collect unlimited amounts of ingredients.

tAl1.png

Some ideas for improvement: * This is pretty much the main one: It would be great to have an unlockable gallery of all the pies you made! I don't think anyone would have the patience to make all 1000 combinations, but it'd still make it feel like you are making some progress. :) And having a counter at the bottom of the screen (X/1000) would help when trying new combinations to see you made a new one. * The witch, if the game was ever expanded, could use some simple walking animation, even if it was just 2-frame one. * Allowing the use of arrows would be a great quality-of-life feature. * Having more varied soundtrack, based on location/whether there are active enemies that could attack you, would be fun. Maybe some sound effects, too! * There is a small walk-through-an-item issue:

qUrs.png

The shrouded figure that guards the lemons, what can you do with them besides shoot and get deflected?

Overall I really like the concept and if you decide to expand it/add more to it (or have some achievements, the gallery, unlockable ingredients, anything, really), I think it'd make for a wonderful game, and not "just" as a jam game where one expects it to be short. I think you've done a great job and it was fun!

Put the Haunt in this House by TheCrittersCove 2019-10-13T20:29:46Z

I've made a very different, lighter-themed witch game for my previous LD so I was very interested in this one. The art is so pretty, I clicked on it instantly. *These are my impressions in no specific order:* The backgrounds are all great, simple in style with nice palettes. The introduction lays the story out nicely so that you don't jump straight to summoning. Ohh, the cursed cat's animated face is great! And the house instantly got spookier, that's a nice touch. The skeleton is hiding in the closet :D That's great. The bedroom has wrong overlap of pillow and the wooden part & the text escapes the box: uxF2.png

I got really stuck before I managed to find the tree (love the pumpkin face on them, tho), I was just trying random combinations, but that can get a bit tedious. The tree gave some helpful hints, at least. Then I got the remaining two easily. :) For the amount of items, I was hoping for more creatures, so if you ever decide to expand it further, it'd be really nice!

Epoch by Cosmic Adventure Squad 2019-10-09T16:42:36Z

Me and my partner both loved the game! It is such a fun take on the grow-and-eat-others mechanic, the art is really pretty and the music fits it really well, too. :) And my partner especially liked the color indicators of who you can consume/who can consume you, it made it a lot less stressful. I don't really have any criticism, it was a very enjoyable experience!

nothing but everything by slovnoslomo 2019-10-20T03:42:27Z

A lovely way to tell a story/share a piece of wisdom while including the "player" (experiencer?). I agree with some of the previous comments, sound was definitely missing for full immersion, but I liked that you predicted some possible responses and addressed them right there. Either way, you probably took a risk with this idea, but I think it turned out great.

Zen Man by Team Catwheel 2019-10-19T18:55:57Z

What I liked: * The art! It's beautiful. Really fits the mood and theme. * Relatively simple controls. * The background fading in! * The effect of shattering thoughts when you hit them. It's all very subtle and not-distracting.

Some other notes:

* I was a little confused because I thought staying with the fish would protect me, but it didn't. * At first, I didn't actually notice the background fading in, because I was focusing on the middle section and the fading effect was very soft and subtle. I only really noticed the circle moving, but I didn't realize it refers to levelling up so I thought nothing is happening and it's just about staying as long as you can. * I got to level 7!

Is this a cat? by Kser 2019-10-09T03:17:11Z

Ah, while I love the art & the concept of cat searching, I was a little confused as to what I'm supposed to do! I got them all, in the end, but I thought I will be guessing whether I'm looking at a cat, or finding them in pictures. As for the positives, though, I really liked the cat font and the drawings and the "win" screen, and also the cat sounds that accompanied what you did. :)

Draw Your Own Adventure! by detectiveLosos 2019-10-08T22:57:26Z

*Impressions in no specific order, with spoilers (duh):* Great narration! I do appreciate that you kept the written text, too. The story ties it all so well together. I love the background style, it's relatively simple but very pretty and I like the muted palette. I'm pleasantly surprised it runs so smoothly even in browser, just the mouse drawing drags a little (it's slow), but that's not really a problem. "The body looks fit, but almost elegant." What a cruel rejection by the bandit (the first time, at least). I also like that you made 3 default responses work in every situation, somehow! I was just disappointed that the bandit was a lady, a gay romance was more fun (for me). But it worked great as a reference to Lord of the Rings (if it was meant that way, I mean)!

Draw Your Own Adventure! by detectiveLosos 2019-10-13T14:00:10Z

So because I really enjoyed the concept of this game, I showed it to my partner! We agreed on a few features that would greatly improve it (though I've seen them mentioned in some comments as I scrolled down to comment myself):

• eraser and/or back button

• on-screen buttons for changing brush size or letting people change it with their keyboard too (+-, maybe?), in case their mouse wheel doesn't work (is there some other control we didn't find?) or they are using tablet

• it'd be fun if you recreated some fairytales in this form

Either way, they had a *ton* of fun and since I didn't spoil them who the characters will be, they went with a different theme!

When Nothing Came by velvetlobster 2019-10-09T04:34:20Z

These are just my impressions as I went through it: Before starting, I wanted to say I really like the description of what went into creating this game (art piece?); I think it is great you decided to make something so personal. Oh, is it a walking flower, or someone holding a flower? I am not sure what I can click on, so I just click on everything. Woah! Going backwards spooked me. The sound is a bit loud. But at least you can "travel" back fast. The music is unsettling, but it fits the mood. It feels tragic. The second musical track feels more... sentimental? A bit hopeful. I am not sure where the key was, but I suddenly had it. I also reached the "end" but it was mostly accidental, I believe. It was interesting, the way certain words behaved when you clicked them.

Overall it was a very interesting experience, memorable. :) I hope you will create more things in this "genre" in future, if it's something that interests you.

Seedlings by Raed 2019-10-20T03:18:44Z

Found a possible bug in fullscreen mode: rRIo.png

I like that they were animated and their individual little faces, though I do wish the beige flower wasn't sad! And if they did something else, like grew more over time, that'd be fun. I collected both seeds and leaves because it looked pretty. It was a cute short experience.

JUST A GHOST LOOKING FOR ITS BODY by smileyface 2019-10-13T19:54:14Z

I love the idea of invisible body & navigating just the shadow! It all fits the theme very well. I struggled with directions (I think it'd work better if the arrows stayed), but I liked the flashing/occassionally flashing light effect a lot. As for the main menu, the left items feel pushed to the side; if you gave them some space, it'd look a lot more intentional, I think!

A Thief's Lament by LizEngland 2019-10-25T18:42:04Z

Oh, another game made in Ren'py! :D That's great, there are not many. Me and my partner both played it & really enjoyed it! Some things we specifically liked: * The inventory & progress bars on screen. It was nice to be able to check the exact value and weight of each item, especially when we played it again and wanted to gain as much as we could! * The many, many options! You managed to write so many people & so many objects, it's a lot of content for game jam. * It was nice that the pre-prison scene changed based on what you did. * It was even more interesting because you could have some short interactions with several of the people! * We were really curious how you could steal the pegleg. Didn't expect violently pushing the poor dude over and taking it. :D * The little bits of magic made it fun, too. We assumed it'd be purely historical and then suddenly there were mages mentioned.

And as for some things that'd make it even better, at least from our point of view: * If you were to extend the game, it would be great to get a different ending when you don't steal anything, or at least different text when you do the rounds and have nothing. Maybe a wider range of reactions to the items you have, as well. But these would take a lot of extra coding/writing so it's not meant as the jam version criticism! * Allowing full-on Robin Hood playstyle would be really fun – like letting you actually give something to people. There was a hint of that, we ended up giving the widow a ... bone ... in exchange for her debts paper. More of that type of options would make it even better, roleplying-wise. * Some of the text on the Notice was a bit hard to read. * Oh, and I didn't see credits for the background artist anywhere. He may have passed away a long time ago, but it'd still be a nice thing to do!

Time-wise, it took us about 15 minutes, plus some more for additional playthroughs.

Overall it was a really fun experience with great writing!

@silas-reinagel Thanks so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to try the game and the pros/cons list is extremely helpful. c: Did you manage to unlock all the extras? We weren't sure how difficult/easy it would be, there are only so many combinations to try, but it is still rather specific.

Dream Avatar by ynneblack 2019-10-09T18:40:03Z

@silas-reinagel Thank you for coming back to answer it. I'm surprised at the combination you got, the last extra (I thought, anyways!) should be the easiest to get. It's fun to see that the plan doesn't always match the experience. :)

@brokenmirrormedia Thank you for giving it a try & leaving feedback! ♥ It sounds like you didn't unlock the first "extra" option (or didn't get all 3 clues to be able to get the cat scene), but besides that, there are only the bus stop and inside bus interactions. :) So you probably got to a big part of the content, or at least some variant of it! All interactions/scenes have 2+ (or 5+, sometimes) versions so there are only a few of them.

@ninjacatz Your message matches your name! Thanks so much for the positive feedback. :)

@ladypossum My favorite review so far. I'm really glad you got to that part! ♥

@kurrik Thank you for bringing that bug to my atention! I think I know why the new background didn't show up (not sure why the old one didn't hide, though), it's a shame because it's actually animated, but I guess I'll have to sacrifice it for the web version (~~not like anyone downloads it, anyways~~) to work properly. And thank you for the rest of your feedback, too! The last extra is just one specific trait+attribute combination that adds one new scene. :)

Dream Avatar by ynneblack 2019-10-09T19:41:49Z

@ladypossum I think that's one of the nicest things a creator can hear. Thank you! That's genuinely so encouraging. ♥ I'll be uploading a new version without the bug in just a few minutes, but as for the extras: you aren't dumb at all, they are just really specific!

**Vague spoilers**: for 1st one, you need to have seen all 3 clues (one happens at the bus stop, one when entering the bus, one in the bus) and select the traits that were hinted at. What do they say about the driver? Combine that with newly unlocked "Fastidious". To see if you got it right, enter the dream; the very first sentence will be different!

For 2nd one, it's a person that loves coffee, they have to talk to the stranger at the bus stop, and their alternative scene happens after they sit down in the bus. Specific trait combination is necessary.

Alternatively, here's a [detailed guide](https://justpaste.it/7rozx)!

@kevin-mooney Could you tell me more about the bug, please? Was it the web version? And could you have clicked on "skip" or "auto" or are you sure it happened on its own? Thank you for playing it and leaving a feedback, though!!

@sarah Thanks so much! ♥ I also love visual novels (but I suppose my games reveal that much :D), though I still find them a bit underappreciated in "western" culture.

@smbe19 Thank you for playing it even though it was confusing for you! I'm used to choice-based games so I didn't count on this being confusing to others, sorry. But yes, it's intentional! The point is that you make your choice as you create your avatar, and it unlocks/locks some options (therefore needing more playthroughs to see all content). If you are, for example, outgoing (all characteristics are taken to an extreme), and you want to ask a stranger something, you have to ask them. Without the options greyed out, you wouldn't really know what changed. So next time around, you can clearly see that you unlocked a new option!

@jakobthequizguy @coda-highland @arcus @dongle Thank you!!

@heyycap Thank you! We didn't have time to write any more content, this was already *really* pushing it, but I agree more story to explore would be great!

@aeveis Thanks so much for the detailed feedback! I admit the work option might have felt a bit random/too hidden, but it wasn't crucial to progress so we were hoping that's not an issue, it's more like a fun (hopefully!!) bonus. Still, I'm trying to think of some way to hint at it, for an updated version. :0 And I like all of your ideas for better clues, it would be better if people could figure it all out in-game and not by reading the game description. Thanks again, feedback like this is extremely helpful!

@peachtreeoath First of all, thank you for writing such thoughtful feedback, but also, for appreciating the writing aspect! I know it ends up relatively short to "read" but oh, it almost took more time than all art assets and coding combined, so it's really nice that someone can appreciate the effort that goes into it. ♥ And thank you for sharing your experience, there seems to be an issue with the true ending being too hidden/unclear in-game, when I'm revisiting it, it's definitely something I'll try to improve/hint at better. Thanks again!

Quest about... Nothing? by NinjaCatz 2019-10-09T20:42:47Z

The game encourages the duck boy to commit crime! Oh. I wish the endings had names or numbers to better keep track/communicate about them, but perhaps it is not necessary on this scale! I found one reference in the letter, when Diego lies. :)

Sneeter by bubblewandgames 2019-10-09T02:12:14Z

What a fun game! Only tiny thing I disliked was the way the whole screen shaked after clicking/typing, it was a bit harsh/sudden movement and personally I found it distracting, especially when making a new account. I got to 1mil+ during my first play, but cancelling insurance policies killed me soon after. I liked waiting until I had their favourite thing twice and using both (I'm not sure how many things they liked/disliked each time?, one time I would swear they only truly cared for cowboys and skateboards :D), though sometimes it was a bit hard to guess what exactly they disliked, I suppose that's part of the experience! I liked the simple colors, the idea and the writing. The texts before you started putting together your next Sneet were funny. (Maybe it would work better without articles? It wouldn't make for organic-sounding text either, you'd still have to have singular and plural versions for every template, but it could be a little smoother.) The preset usernames and icons were a nice detail as well! Oh, and is "vibe check!" template a positive or negative one? Or is it just "neutral"?

Departure by Nathaniel Jensen 2019-10-10T17:08:35Z

I see others have already pointed out the walking speed; can you @ me when you make it faster? I'd love to play through it again, but it's a bit frustrating at the moment. I do love that you put the two posters in the hut, so the game gives you instructions without needing a tutorial! And the controls are very easy, selecting just one action at a time.

Departure by Nathaniel Jensen 2019-10-10T19:45:48Z

To test if it feels too slow, I'd recommend just walking across the whole island, back and forth, 10 times. Or even from the hut to the trees in the middle, several times in a row. It can take a lot of back-and-forth when figuring out the puzzles for the first time! It is a bit better already, though. :) I'm stuck on leaf + rope so I can't provide further feedback but from the little content I saw it looked promising.

Writers Block by Copper_Aardvark_Games 2019-10-09T03:07:53Z

Great concept! I really liked: * The sound indicating an idea is being searched for! Especially helpful later, when it gets faster. * Upgrading the website made it playable for longer as you had something to achieve. * It was quite relaxing (music, design) but also funny. * The simple mechanic made it really easy to get into and play. * Cute little detail with the top website being LDjam!

Some improvement ideas: * Since it's heavily text-based, I thought you might want to know of typos, to possibly fix? Please don't take this the wrong way; I also did not have time to proofread my game and already had to fix some typos so I'm just hoping to help! Anyways, they are: "you're **and** unoriginal", "although they're not really yours**.** per se", "Quit to **TItle**" * Being able to press "enter" to confirm ("continue" button, for example) would be a great quality-of-life detail! * I ran into a bug with these two buttons not becoming disabled when you reach maximum. I play it on Windows, if that helps. Bez názvu 1.jpg * Additional upgrades to unlock would be fun, but I imagine that'd take more time to make!!

The scenes are very pretty, the blurred foreground gives me lowkey Limbo vibes.

Refuge by LadyPossum 2019-10-10T23:40:34Z

First of all, congratz on finishing your first game!! I actually used my previous LD (Deity Hook-up) as a way to learn to make games as well, so I know it's not easy trying to do it all at once and in such a short time, but I could never tell you had no previous experience! :0

I probably found all the ways to die as I did just that, 3 times now. :D First the ship, then the guard defending the lady, then the guard again, just because. Then I tried giving her the mashrooms. Loved the art for the ending, such a tender embrace! Speaking of which, you made so many pictures for it?? The intro is amazing, but so are the sprites and landscape. It'd be really short playing-wise, but with the intro it feels like a complete story. It would be nice to be able to return to the game even after that ending, I didn't find a way and had to close it & start it over, and I still wanted to try giving the guard stuff (they looked so happy about the mushroom!).

Oh, and there were some overlapping issues, like: scrn.jpg

Overall it was really lovely and the story was sweet. I hope that this experience inspires you to make more stuff!

Afloat by Nigma 2019-10-17T15:01:18Z

Cute game! We really liked the little pixel art in desert and forests and the swimming animation. The swamp tiles are broken, though, they don't generate anything. And if we didn't read the comments, we would have, unfortunately, quit early on; there are no instructions and we thought we only have water tiles, nothing else was regenerating. I'd also like to click one time only to generate a new tile, this was very clicking-heavy. :/ So at least some instructions would be very helpful, it can get confusing, but then the game itself is really fun. We took the longest time to find sand, but not long enough to get frustrating! I hope you continue developing this into a bigger game, or at least without the swamp bug, because it has a ton of potential. Oh, and some ending screen would have been nice, not just the trophy losing the counter. But it was still enjoyable and the art was really cute, the little window icon, too. :)

ZERO COAST by kurrik 2019-10-09T20:49:53Z

Got 24 points, after that, every time I ended up locked up, unable to move more than 2 (3?) tiles between two taller blocks. It would be fun if the difficulty built up so that you could get a bigger island first, but I enjoyed it as it is!

Meager Genesis by Hajden 2019-10-09T22:24:45Z

I wasn't sure what to expect when I read the description, but oh, it got quite mesmerising! I could stare for hours at the glittering stars and the music was lovely. The opening and end design were also nice, simple, so they didn't distract from it at all. I loved how deep the space felt and all the background colors were right up my alley. At first I was a little distracted by the navigation; it was too easy to miss the orbs (I was just dragging my orb with mouse, unaware I should propel it!). But later it didn't matter as much, as I'd go long time without even seeing any. I also hit the background's edge, it has a green frame around it. My bad for going one direction only, though! Overall it was a very lovely experience, thank you for sharing it with us!

@hajden It was a green line at the very edge of the screen (I went to the right side and had it in full screen mode in Chrome) and it didn't allow me to go further, I don't think I even went over the green line, it stopped right in front of it. I can try to look for it again if it doesn't show that way on your end, let me know if that'd help!

Beagle by Camden Cecrle 2019-10-09T22:39:29Z

So I just finished it. The beagle really was a good boy! What a lovely concept. I burnt one of the meats. :/ The photo frames at the end, like movie credits, were really cute. I didn't like the zooming in and out when running, but other than that, the controls were really well presented in the tutorial so it was easy to follow! And the human looked so happy, at least as much as their faceless form allowed. It was fun.

Seedling by Apandso 2019-10-19T20:40:24Z

What an adorable game! Here are some things I loved: * The art! It's so cute and the stylization is great. The background is nice, but what I like the most is the flower itself & all its stages, and the seeds! It's great that they differ not just by color, but also by expression! * Having a clear goal to work to (the lands). * Auto-generating energy! I was worried it'd be clicking-only, but this helps a ton, at least early in the game. * The flying animation ♥ * It fits the theme really well! * It feels satisfying to see the numbers you gained pop up. :)

Fhn0.png

And here are some ideas for improvement: * It would be nice to have some ending/at least a message "you restored the world". * Some music, or at least subtle sound effects! * Balancing – I had to use an autoclicker (when everything was level 15-20) and it still took quite a long time. * Maybe, but this would add a lot of time so I can see why it couldn't possibly fit within the jame version, but the upgrades you do to the land could show on the main game background? It'd feel more satisfying!

Empty box by Corentin Benoit-Gonin 2019-10-09T01:09:23Z

First some criticism: I missed an option to go back in dialogue when I accidentally clicked too fast, but that's a minor issue. There's a typo ("... it's been a while since I didn't *played* it"). Oh, and personally I had problems with this pixel font, I had to focus a lot to be able to read it. Now for the positive! I adore the concept; room-search is always fun and I liked that you didn't always outright say what to do. The mirror was a great touch. But the story and the mixed emotions (switching back and forth between missing the friend and being angry/sad), and then the sweet ending, were definitely the best part! I did not even mind that it's a linear story, I enjoyed uncovering the next part. :) Well done!

Hi! I think you forgot to add the download link.

Keep Me Burning by NavrcL 2019-10-20T01:36:21Z

(Hned jsem si říkala, že "Eva a Lukas" zní podezřele česky. :D Ahoj! Pro účely přístupnosti ostatním napíšu zbytek komentáře anglicky.)

I don't think I'll say anything new, but there's never enough of positive feedback: I saw the making-of video (thanks for sharing that, it's always interesting to peek behind the scenes) and let me just say, I have no idea how you managed to create such a complex sprite animation in such a short time! Most jam games I've seen so far have 2-frame movement at most, this is really incredible. The character feels so alive. Another highlight are the sound effects, it really draws you in and you can feel the urgency of the dying light. I didn't have the patience (I'm really bad at timed platformers) to finish it yet, but it's already one of my top favorite entries this time, that's for sure. :0

Second Period Chemistry by LOWERCASE 2019-10-09T21:59:19Z

A visible scrollbar and some sound are pretty much the only improvements I can think of. Sexy rivals, cosplayer (the sparkles!), frat party... I finished all combinations and loved it! The art is cute, graphics simple and not distracting, controls easy to figure out. The limited color palette is very pleasant, too. Overall a great minigame!

Feelings Not Yet by crazyrems 2021-04-30T14:14:10Z

I really liked the oversized custom cursor and the little jumping animation when you touch a character. :) And the last screen showing the future characters is really promising, I bet it will be interesting to meet them.

After talking to the family, I had to wait a very long time for the monster attack, it might be a bug (browser version). I clicked around and repeated the dialogue several times, if that helps.

Feelings Not Yet by crazyrems 2021-05-01T09:38:31Z

How is it supposed to happen? I can't record a long video, but everything else in the game ran smoothly. Let me try it again. I click through it, talk to Stephan and the two other people. There is the animation (dark shadows that appear and wiggle over other people) when I can't click on them. Whenever I click on Fiona, it repeats the "... can't talk to her yet" dialogue. If I wait, nothing really happens. So I repeat this whole process (clicking on everyone) a few times, and then the monster appears.

Feelings Not Yet by crazyrems 2021-05-01T17:51:32Z

I did not know the shadows symbolize that, I thought it'd be tied to the monsters (often shown as shadows) instead, but that's a fun mechanic. I just followed the text instructions.

Good luck with the post-jam version!

Oculus Leviathan by NotExplosive 2021-05-01T22:48:54Z

That was really interesting! I really liked the eye animation when you looked around, and the slow mode was fun to watch.

Deep Cover by Silas Reinagel 2021-05-01T22:26:18Z

I was thinking, "Oh, a scheme with jello? That's a fun lighthearted theme", and the game goes "... jello to destroy an entire country". :D The company is sus indeed.

"For our weekend jam" – is that how "jello" came to be? That was probably the best pun.

Sonder (a story) by Noble Robot 2021-05-11T04:02:32Z

I was excited to play this game because there is some overlap to what we did with our narrative/exploration project. :) The moving dust particles, 3D-like layering, zooming in/out and camera movements made the exploring feel really smooth and immersive! My favorite object was probably the unicorn lamp. I wasn't sure if it was possible to find the "right" object, so I searched through everything twice.

As a suggestion, I had mixed feelings about the indicator to continue the intro dialogue. I think it's intended as a timer, not a button, but I clicked on it at first. Intuitively I would expect it to be on the right side (and for the left one to take me backwards) or maybe in the center. With shorter sentences, I had to wait which wasn't much of an issue; but with longer paragraphs, sometimes the button appeared too soon and it interrupted the reading flow.

Overall it was a really interesting experience with fun writing and pretty visuals!

Sonder (a story) by Noble Robot 2021-05-13T19:40:53Z

@noble-robot Thank you! It is actually scanned pencil art. :)

The Botanist by Tezza48 2021-05-05T23:29:06Z

That was fun! Cute pixel art style, and easy to figure out how to play it (except for the red squares at the bottom of the screen). The "boss battle" came a bit out of nowhere, I did not have enough fed plants nearby as I ran up, thinking they can't go up like the other crabs. :D If you wanted to create a sense of urgency, it worked really well. Just the sound was a little too harsh, maybe.

Just Another Job by ynneblack 2021-04-27T23:28:03Z

@okamit Thanks so much for giving it a try and leaving a thoughtful comment! I'm glad to hear it felt cozy and relaxing, we were hoping for a very casual experience. As for the missing background art, it's a very high priority for post-jam version, so thank you for that feedback! I see the game of your team also used point & click mechanics in a house. :)

Just Another Job by ynneblack 2021-05-01T10:08:40Z

@sdata Thanks so much for playing through it! I will try to spoiler tag the reply, lets see if it works...

Spoiler about endings:

!> Being trapped in the cup is indeed the worst outcome! (Technically it's just your soul trapped in it, because we are basing the character on existing fairytale lore.)

!> The main ending is the one you got to, with the phone call and the two questions. It can play out a bit differently depending on how you acted before/during it, so there are some modifications to the ending, but I think you got the one that reveals the most (if it included both the calendar/mom and Pepa)! There is also the option to refuse the job, and an option that completely avoids the phone call.

I would really like to include more lore in the post-jam version!

@titaninette Thanks so much!

Just Another Job by ynneblack 2021-05-01T19:14:46Z

@toasteater Thank you for the feedback and playing it despite the initial issues, I really appreciate that! The clash is intentional, I wasn't sure if it would come across, so that's great to know. c: We would definitely love to explore the lore/client's backstory more.

I completely forgot to mark Linux there, thank you for noticing! I'll fix that now. If you don't mind me asking, did you try adjusting the sound in settings? The default is preset to mid-range volume, but maybe that somehow got reset in Linux version? And if you don't mind answering, did you ever run other Ren'py games on the PC successfully? I'm just trying to figure out where to begin to look for the problem with the Windows file.

@justcamh Thanks again for giving us this opportunity, it was fun and very helpful for our work on post-jam version. :)

Just Another Job by ynneblack 2021-05-05T05:31:52Z

@abigailcorfman Thank you for the detailed feedback and for your guesses about the client's identity! It was the first time I added a "minigame" mechanic like the room inspection so I'm really glad you liked it. As for the client's identity, !> He is from this Earth! And looking at it, he does dress a little bit like a magician. :D

I'm excited to see more interactive story games like yours, it's not an easy genre to tackle during a short game jam!

@toasteater Ah, the file should be the same (renamed for clarity) but I really hope this means it was just one-time bug, the only other explanation I was able to find is that there could be a mismatch between system language and the file name, and that would be hard to solve. Thank you so much for looking into it and trying the download again, I really appreciate you taking the time to do so! :)

@lrvstudios Thank you! I'm glad you met Pepa.

@natalia-dushkina Thank you for playing it. :) We added new backgrounds to 1.1 version!

Just Another Job by ynneblack 2021-05-11T09:04:25Z

Thanks to everyone who commented on the art – it was the first time we used traditional art assets instead of creating everything digitally, so it's good to see it received well! We also really appreciate all the comments about the game's mood/feelings it evokes, and guesses about what's going on there. :)

@morcado Oh, thank you for the suggestion! :) That's a good idea.

@vixenmink Thank you! May I ask if you use Windows, Mac or Linux? It would be helpful to know which version caused problems. :)

@crow-seeds Thanks so much for the feedback! We were trying to balance the casual and creepy tones. As for the ending, !> It's just the player's soul that was trapped! It continues existing so it's not strictly a death. Some of the other souls have been in the family for a long time.

@phi Thank you so much for such a detailed feedback, I'm really glad you enjoyed piecing it together! We weren't sure if it would be OK to allow the player to fill in the blanks how they wanted, instead of actually revealing the full story behind it. "Cozy but with a sad undertone" is exactly what we were aiming for!

I'm sorry about the replays, though, I hope you at least got to use "skip"? I'll make sure to add this option to the game's description.

@killua I'm really glad the tension came across! Thank you for playing it and leaving such a nice comment.

@rialgar Oh, if you finished the task, you were supposed to find it there so that may be a bug. I'll look into it, thank you.

We were discussing a possibility of expanding the game's story in another installment if we figure out a compelling premise! If we do that, I would post about it on itch.io in dev updates or something like that. :)

Just Another Job by ynneblack 2021-05-19T13:01:33Z

@jonathan-jennings Thank you!

@pnkvrt Thank you so much for the detailed feedback! c: You aren't the first to expect a body in the bathtub, that's wonderful. The sorrowful music goes with the character so we thought it'd set the mood, but this impression is even better. Typos aren't nitpicky at all, thank you, I'll look for it!

@nonumbersgames Thanks so much! I'm really glad it felt immersive.

Redeeppedeer by toasteater 2021-05-01T12:05:12Z

Oh, the "retro" aesthetic ties it to the time period really well! I really liked that the instructions/plot was explained through the notes, so it encouraged exploration. It's nice that we can even move the windows around! Resizing would be fun, if a bit unnecessary. The mini game is cute.

If you are looking for concrit for the post-jam version, I played it in browser (full screen) and I noticed all the text is a bit small. The font is nice and clear, but it still took effort to read, so I think it might help make it more accessible to increase the text to 1.5x or 2x the size, maybe? In the notepad, it might also help to give the window a bit of padding so the first letters wouldn't touch the frame. But that's a very small detail!

The Cave by KittenFuzzArt 2021-05-06T20:47:21Z

That was a nice short story, solid writing and the images really added to the mood! I did not run into any bugs. The "waiting ..." ending felt a little sudden, I was not entirely sure what happened. The "go back" ending was really good; it might add to the suspension if you divided the text into a few shorter parts, but that's mostly a matter of personal preference! I really liked the visuals during the monster chase.

River, Carry Me Away by Noire 2021-05-06T01:12:23Z

Another game inspired by slavic lore! I was enchanted by the opening sequence and the subtle star animation. The soundtrack was very immersive.

I was unable to connect the constellations – I clicked around but did not figure out the mechanic, so I ended up watching the gameplay video for it.

Blackout by Frasse 2021-04-30T13:58:55Z

I got stuck after obtaining the mask and a mug and had to get a hint from the playthrough video, but it was fun! The animation is great and I loved the short illustrated sequences.

Deep in the sky - bird flight simulator by Anton Surkov 2021-05-06T00:11:22Z

My PC does not seem to meet the minimum requirements to play it, unfortunately, but I wanted to say that the concept is lovely and the screenshots look very pretty! :)

Oh, and you might want to set the HTML embed on your itch.io page to some smaller size, my screen is 1920 wide but it still extends outside of it.

A Taste of the Past by Emily Pitcher 2021-05-01T22:01:18Z

"If you want to take one thing from her, it's to love even when no one's watching."

This was such a beautiful, touching story.

The artist style, music and settings were really well done. I think my favorite minigames were the vegetable chopping and the puzzle, it was satisfying to watch the bowl and the pan filling up! The little sparkles showing a finished task were really cute, too.

It was a really nice way to wrap it up with the cleaned up recipe page and the cooked meal.

My beautiful deep twisted pocket by Caym 2021-05-06T20:31:53Z

That background art is so good! Uniform enough to not be distracting, but fun to look through it. :)

It would be nice to have a button to restart completely (with full health), without having to close the game.

Root Deeper by BrielleY 2021-05-05T22:41:26Z

My best is around days 10–11, then I always lost due to a weather change, I think the fires and suddenly drained water. But thematically it made sense that during the first few days, with a small weak tree, anything could overwhelm it! Congratulations on successfully finishing your first game jam. c:

By the way, when you click on "root deeper" before "root", it results in this funny visual where the first tile is completely skipped. :D

Graphite Journey by pnkvrt 2021-05-06T18:57:12Z

I'm impressed by the amount of individual art assets you drew and edited for the game! We were scanning pencil drawings too, but it involved less editing since they were mainly static backgrounds.

I think the map bug might not be fixed because I just got trapped in the border drawings (HTML version). It happened when I was in the top left corner, near the rocks, trying to walk through them because I thought there's one more location. But luckily it happened during the first level, so I just restarted it. :) The second level looked very promising and I would really like to see more!

The Elevator by Redamz 2021-05-06T00:46:21Z

Ok, first of all, the mood/atmosphere of this entry is so good. The writing was really enjoyable, the first visited floor really set up the creepy, absurd mood from the get-go. The vibes reminded me of Persona games a little?

I got to ending 2 (that got dark fast!) and on the second run I really wanted to get the -445 floor ending, but at the same time I wanted to see what happens next, so I continued to ending 8 instead.

I would love to replay it to see all content, but since there is no "skip" or "save/load" option, it takes a very, very long time to revisit. If you expand it post-jam, this would really help! :)

She Waits Below by AbigailCorfman 2021-05-05T05:12:17Z

I would ask through DMs, but LD doesn't have those, so I hope you won't mind me asking here... how graphic (either in description or with visuals, if there are some) do the spider scenes get? @abigailcorfman

Derbys F#ckin Pissed by sdata 2021-05-01T21:27:31Z

Oh, dammit, Doplimio.

The buzzing sound effects vaguely reminded me of a visual novel I really liked (We Know The Devil), it set the mood really well! And the entire illustrated opening really helped tie it all together, a nice short story for extra motivation. :)
