Nice game with great atmosphere!

valden 2019-10-08 10:43

The graphics and audio are lovely, but the gameplay is very frustrating and confusing. It is still a nice entry.

lighty-the-light 2019-10-08 14:47

Nice atmosphere, but kinda hard for me to play though \:P, KEEP ON GOING!

mimusangel 2019-10-08 14:47

The realization of the game and its atmosphere is really good. And I'm not talking about graphics that are great!

pierre-feuille-studio 2019-10-08 14:50

Really cool chara design and animation. Gameplay was a bit tough on me, I would have liked checkpoints. Sound design is really completing the atmosphere, great job!

pixamentory 2019-10-08 14:50

Beautiful Graphics and Stage Appearance!!

evepto 2019-10-08 14:54

I loved it, especially the art! But is the player a potato or is it just me XD!

hwaet 2019-10-08 15:04

Nice design and the sound is really great. I don't understand the random inaccessible lights. Why does my lamp keep baddies away but those don't? The flow is pretty nice when you get the hang of it.

rillep 2019-10-08 15:05

Wow such a good game! The sounds, the movement controlls, the graphics, the level design are all very nice! And the checkpoint system, first I didn't understand what those doors were for. But that was a very awesome way to do checkpoints!

bakage 2019-10-08 15:06

The grime atmosphere and shortcuts reminds me of Hollow Knight and Dark Souls. Gameplay is very tense, it's simple but effective. Good job!

jason-lothamer 2019-10-08 15:37

Very well done game except for balance. It felt like I was playing Hollow Knight. Maybe make the oil last longer or have more drops.

emmyoop 2019-10-08 17:06

Game was fun! I think if the light lasted a bit longer the balance could be better? Really enjoyed the music and the sfx!

fenderbate 2019-10-08 17:43

I really enjoyed the atmosphere, but the gameplay not so much :slight_frown: I didn't know what to do and kept running out of oil for the lamp.

pestodesign 2019-10-08 19:48

Nice concept, loved it that the darkness was eating me after the lights went out! :bulb: I also liked the potato character, but the background assets looked much cooler, so he was a bit off and unfinished for me.

huntrox 2019-10-08 21:25

nice music/Graphics/Animations i like the idea and gameplay not so much to do but i like it

minibobbo 2019-10-09 02:54

Music and mood were great. Art worked really well. Actual gameplay ended up as mostly trial and error it seemed to me. Restarting from the beginning was a little frustrating because it was a lot to keep in my head the whole way through and it was difficult when you can never see the whole picture.

Great entry overall!

hartvichio 2019-10-09 06:42

Fantastic atmosphere! Had to experiment a bit to get to the end but the concept was pretty neat. I like games that use light as a mechanic.

madeasterbunny 2019-10-09 12:31

The light disappearing really made the game tough, but it was extremely well done! I really like the atmosphere of the game. It really had a spelunking feel to it since everything was so dark and claustrophobic. Really cool game you made here! Keep it up!!!

lomna 2019-10-09 13:53

This game felt really tough to me.!! That is probably cause I suck at platformers. I also just love the art and the player looks adorable.

arzi 2019-10-09 14:04

Funnily enough, I did a very similar but top-down game as my first Ludum Dare way back in LD16

Your graphics are much cuter, though! I liked how the game looked and sounded, but I suck way too much in platformers to get very far

gabas 2019-10-09 15:47

Wow, nice game, it has a hollow knight mood vibes, love it. i think you could put more feedback when you die, or more weight at the character movement. :v:

pablotitan 2019-10-09 20:32

It really resembles Hollow Knight :D It is hard, I must admit, but has beautiful art, nice sounds and interesting gameplay - well done! ;)

jin9310 2019-10-10 07:54

Really amazing how You were able to create such intense experience. The combination of sounds, music, art and the main mechanic works great. Really great entry! Thank you for this!

purrseus 2019-10-10 12:09

The atmosphere is really strong! I love how you are forced to frantically run through the cave, even though it can be a bit rustrating at times, but that adds to the experience in my opinion. Graphic and sound desgin are insanely beautiful.

navrcl 2019-10-10 12:16

Thank you guys for such a nice words! Really appreciated.

moechen 2019-10-10 12:49

I like the music and the art! The atmosphere is great! It is little hard to restart at the beginning. Really enjoy your game

danielcmcg 2019-10-10 13:54

Very good game overall, nice controls, aesthetic and sound! I liked the puzzle idea simple yet challenging got me trying a lot of times and the respawn with doors already opened is indeed a good way to make you feel the game progressing.

coffeedrinkers 2019-10-10 14:32

Great entry! I need to play this more, but for the time spent on the browser version, it was really cool. Loved every part of the game! (Also, great work on the Feudal Alloy!)

jiri-hysek 2019-10-10 15:38

The game feels pretty solid! Charming art, awesome music and audio.. very polished entry with nice creepy mood :)

drums 2019-10-10 16:56

Really likes the animation and design, as well as the sounds. I loved the creepy sounds after the light burns out haha.

tomssuli 2019-10-10 16:56

Pretty game in so little time. Addictive, as you unlocked the passages even if you died. Premium grapchics and audio!

ulcius 2019-10-10 17:31

I'm thrilled with visual side of this project, very very neat! Also loved to see your 'making of' video. Gameplay is not really my thing, but it has a great potenttial of becoming cool rougelike!

goldenglade 2019-10-11 08:03

Keep Me Burning has great graphics and the audio definitely sets the mood, both in its music and sound design, and these high quality components make up the game's greatest strengths. The gameplay is this game's biggest weakness, however. Each point to replenish the main character's light are one time use, which discourages exploration. One possible solution is to make each station permanent use and space them out further from each other whilst maintaining that the light lasts long enough to travel between them. In addition, the penalty for death is very harsh, further discouraging exploration of the game's nonlinear level design. One possible solution for this is to make each light station a checkpoint, granted they are spaced out sufficiently as to not make the game too easy. Overall, though the gameplay may have faults, the visual and audio design are to be commended. - P.S. Excellent "making of" video.

vaibho 2019-10-11 08:07

The game's graphics are awesome and the audio was nice. The gameplay was nice and the game was addictive. Overall, a nice game. Nice work.

thetatautau 2019-10-11 08:14

The animations are awesome. Music and art too. But the game is a bit too hard and frustrating to really enjoy it.

ryano 2019-10-11 08:44

Great game. My favourite so far. Loved the graphics and audio. The ominous darkening of the area around your character gave me a great sense of anxiety and impending doom. I managed to finish it after about 15 minutes of slowly exploring more and more. Well done!

luc-dercourt 2019-10-11 09:35

Really great entry ! I love the mood with this one ! Congrats ^^.

noobdev 2019-10-11 09:36

Really love the character, it looks cute  and the controls are very smooth and the mechanics is amazing, it opens up opportunity for really interesting levels. It would be helpful if the lights stayed on for a bit longer but its just a personal preference, overall well done.

igoreshka 2019-10-11 15:10

That's.. that's.. visual miracle..

igoreshka 2019-10-11 15:41

Input lag 0.5s, but game completed!

kaeveris 2019-10-11 17:37

Visuals are amazing and the sounds are awesome! The controls are great and the atmosphere is really cool! I felt like the light went out a bit too soon or maybe I'm just bad at the game XD But it's a very beautiful and enjoyable game!

I realized I played your entry for the Communicaty Game Jam, it was great as well!

sol-roo 2019-10-11 18:31

the atmosphere, sound and art are outstanding! bravo, the best one so far.

annie-owl 2019-10-11 19:51

Just amazing. I love almost everything about this game: gameplay, sound design and background music, art style, the overall atmosphere. I got a little bit infuriated by the trap exit, but that was actually "good rage", because completing the game after that felt even better

I only have one question: Is it some sort of hidden area, that I was not able to open up? Or is it just a continuation of the level, planned for the future? Or is it just a tease? I've completed the game but was not able to find my way to that room. scrn4.png

navrcl 2019-10-11 20:20

@annie-owl Thank you very much for such kind words! I'm really glad you enjoyed it. The door just leads to one of the shortcuts you can unlock from the other side to help yourself with the next runs. :) You can open it from the room where those moving spike walls are. Anyway, thanks again for the feedback. Really appreciated!!

annie-owl 2019-10-11 20:46

@navrcl I guess i just made my runs harder by missing this

konomizure 2019-10-12 06:46

Loved it.

cybersoftuk 2019-10-12 09:23

Very nice mood, simple platformer but very polished, i found it difficult with no checkpoints but was fun to play, the sound is great - nice entry! Well Done!

(I enjoyed your making of video too - it's nice to see behind the scenes)

ithildin 2019-10-12 13:45

Almost perfect entry. My only complaint is, as you may guess by reading at other commenters, the excessive repetition, even if level design in itself feels really good: it keeps pushing me towards discovering the next challenging section, and mastering those platforming challenges and reaching the next was super rewarding.

Having the roadblock switches be persistent across runs tries to mitigate this a bit, but it stills fall short when even with them you have to repeat increasingly longer sections of the same path over and over until you find the next available switch. I don't mind repeating a section I keep failing at because that's the whole point, but doing so from the beginning of the level is too harsh a penalty for a mistake. In some cases, such as the first time you arrive to a crossroads and you pretty much need to do a wild guess for the right path, it is actually unfair.

Sorry if that bit of criticism sounded harsh, I've temporarily stopped playing to rate the game and I'm still a bit tilted , but I'm beating this today for sure :muscle:. I'm loving everything else, from the art style (the character animation is really cute :D) and the level lighting to the sound design and music. Mechanics are clear and tight, and the controls feel really polished. Well, everything is super polished, it feels like a game I would be wishlisting on a PC store or my Switch.

Awesome job, congratulations!! (But please, checkpoints! )

[EDIT]: Just beat it! :D burning.png

hyperscope 2019-10-12 18:54

Absolutely wonderful job on the mood, audio, visuals. Absolutely wonderful job on everything!

Such a well executed, simple idea that I was able to pickup right away. Typically I love giving constructive feedback but I can't think of it at the moment.

This is a front runner for me, good work!

bradleyashley 2019-10-13 06:42

Well placed checkpoints, the level design is very tight and well thought out. The character design and animation is aces. GREAT controls even in the webplayer. My only suggestion would be the ability to leave torches as a default ability, though I know that kind of defeats the purpose of the theme.

namnam 2019-10-13 08:32

I liked the graphic and the audio, gameplay is a bit rigid, but the feeling of stress is real.

wdebowicz 2019-10-19 17:22

Cool entry, I really like how the mod was changing together with music, when we were running out of time.

mortus 2019-10-19 19:22

Beautiful and really atmospheric game, but I didn't quite like the feeling of always being rushed.

ynneblack 2019-10-20 01:36

(Hned jsem si říkala, že "Eva a Lukas" zní podezřele česky. :D Ahoj! Pro účely přístupnosti ostatním napíšu zbytek komentáře anglicky.)

I don't think I'll say anything new, but there's never enough of positive feedback: I saw the making-of video (thanks for sharing that, it's always interesting to peek behind the scenes) and let me just say, I have no idea how you managed to create such a complex sprite animation in such a short time! Most jam games I've seen so far have 2-frame movement at most, this is really incredible. The character feels so alive. Another highlight are the sound effects, it really draws you in and you can feel the urgency of the dying light. I didn't have the patience (I'm really bad at timed platformers) to finish it yet, but it's already one of my top favorite entries this time, that's for sure. :0

navrcl 2019-10-22 10:59

@ynneblack Děkujeme moc! :) Thanks! Yeah, the animation and sound were the things we focused most of our time. Glad it was worth it. :)

dimesto52 2019-10-23 17:48

I really like the atmosphere even if it nue a little to my understanding of the world

lunareffect 2019-10-24 08:44

Absolutely gorgeous and polished! Amazing that you managed this in 72 hours! Congratulations!

ryjcio 2019-10-24 10:53

Great entry folks.

rams3160 2019-10-24 15:10

Really impressive art style and work in the time frame! Has a very hollow knight visual feel.

autumn-schutt 2019-10-24 15:11

The graphics were really nice and the game had a very polished feel. This is very impressive for 72 hours! I struggled to get past the first few lamps, it was pretty difficult, but I really like it!

glaciereclipse 2019-10-26 11:17

Very gorgeous game! I finished it..but I don't really understand how haha I mean I got through all the timed spiked platforms, and ran out of light so I just rushed through what I guess was the last door and it showed me I have completed it. I felt like the controls weren't very tight and didn't feel I had full control of the character in the tricky platforming parts. Also maybe a bit more time before the light runs out would be great or at least don't reduce the visible light radius as much. Overall this is a really polished and gorgeous game I enjoyed it very much!

exilegl 2019-10-26 17:48

Cute potato-looking character  Cool use of the theme too. Perhaps a slightly longer lasting light would be good balance wise, as I found myself running out of light too soon a lot. Love the general mood of the game.

palemek 2019-10-27 21:30

I really appretiated the animations and music <3. The game is very polished - it really shows, it's made by proffesionals. Nice mechanics (although I'm not really a platrformer type). All in all - really good entry!

lagman9000 2019-10-28 19:07

Awesome game really loved the timed light mechanic. Really polished visuals too, great work!

brokenmirrormedia 2019-10-29 03:43

Wow I love this art style, feels very modern-retro to me. I usually don't like "blind maze" games (there have been a few games like that in this jam), but this is a pretty nice and fair implementation of that. Even if your torch burns out you can remember what things look like, and it isn't too demanding in terms of precise platforming (at least as far as I got). The light mechanics and the atmosphere all work together to create a really great mood, and it's overall a really impressive entry, great work!
